Happy Holidays! BY CHRISTY & TERRY JAILLET
T
he holiday season is upon us. Living in such culturally and religiously diverse communities, the winter holidays can have very different meanings to all of our readers. One thing that seems to be constant, regardless of faith or heritage, is our tendency to celebrate with friends and loved ones. Our family tradition is to celebrate on Christmas Eve Eve (two days before Christmas) with an extended family dinner, followed by a white elephant gift exchange. If you’ve never played, it’s quite simple and entertaining. Participants bring a wrapped gift. Each player, in turn, gets to unwrap a new gift or “steal” one that someone has already unwrapped. Feel free to adopt our family’s holiday tradition as your own. It is always great fun. Speaking of adopting holiday traditions… Our kids beg us each year to celebrate Festivus, the secular holiday made famous on the sitcom Seinfeld. Coincidentally, it is also celebrated on Christmas Eve Eve. Our 16-year-old son is particularly interested in adopting Festivus’ “airing of the grievances”; so far we have successfully resisted! Our family, along with our extended family at Our City Media, wish you and yours a wonderful holiday season. We hope you enjoy this treasured time with loved ones regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or even Festivus! Best wishes for a festive and safe holiday season.

Before the holiday parade, individuals and families will participate in the Coral Springs Holiday Mile along Sample Road near Coral Springs Drive, which will be held on Wednesday, December 11th at 5 p.m. This will be a timed one-mile event, with awards for the top three male and female participants in each age category. The start line will have be a pink tape on the ground in front of the Coral Springs Diner. From there, runners will head east .50miles make a U-turn and then head back on Sample Road. Following the Holiday Mile, the City of Coral Springs Annual Holiday Parade will be on December 11th at 7 p.m. The parade will feature marching bands, decorated floats and other entries along Sample Road from Coral Springs Drive to City Hall. This year’s theme for the parade is holiday heroes. The Coral Springs Holiday Mile started in 2014 and continues to grow each year. Individuals and teams are encouraged to sign up and holiday attire is recommended. “The theme of the Coral Springs Holiday Mile has always been a holiday theme. We have several teams

who dress in holiday attire,” said Kelle Burke with In The Zone Event and Sports Management and organizer of the Coral Springs Holiday Mile. “Training for Warriors has been our largest team since 2014, and the WOB Run Club has won our fastest team since 2014.” The Coral Springs Holiday Mile is a fun event for the entire family. “The Coral Springs Holiday Mile takes place before the Holiday Parade so the street is lined with people. Also, many runners and walkers dress up in holiday attire for the holiday season. This is a great community event for local families. For businesses, we offer vendor opportunities as well,” said Burke, adding, “How often do you get to run down Sample Road? This is a great activity for the family as it is something they can do together. “
The event organizer hopes residents will join the running community at this annual event. “The event was started in the City of Coral Springs as a fun way to get involved in the running community. The race is unique because it’s a one-mile race. We do age group awards, and team awards for the fastest team, and the team with the most members on it,” said Burke. “It is successful every year because it’s a family friendly event.” Enjoy the holiday season with your local community and family at the Coral Springs Holiday Mile. Coral Springs Police Seek Toys For Local Children BY NICOL JENKINS
C
oral Springs police want to bring holiday cheer to children who would otherwise not have toys this Christmas. The Coral Springs Police Department is collecting unwrapped, new toys for children less fortunate in our community. The toy drive will be held from December 1st through December 16th. The City’s police officers are encouraging the community to donate a toy this holiday season. Suggested toys include: sport themed items, action figures, Legos, baby dolls, Play-Doh, toy cars, and board games. Please, no stuffed animals or used toys. They are accepting items for newborns all the way up to 18 years of age. Drop off locations are the Public Safety Building Lobby, 2801 Coral Springs Drive, and the lobby is open 24/7; Coral Springs City Hall in the Mall, 9239 W. Atlantic Blvd.; and Coral Springs City Hall Lobby, 9500 W. Sample Road. In addition, they are partnering with Toy Express, which is a new toy store in Coral Springs, and customers can make a purchase in the store and place their donation in the box provided. The City of Coral Springs has been participating
20 DECEMBER 2019 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
in the Toy Drive for 5 years since 2014. The toys will be distributed to children that have been identified as having a need. They are identified by their School Resource Officers, road patrol officers that come in contact with families and Detectives from the SVU. The toys will be distributed from December 16th through December 18th. The officers will take the toys and deliver it to their home. “The goal of this event is to give back to those less fortunate in the community that the police officers serve. We appreciate the support of our residents and business owners this holiday season,” said Monica Vargas, Community Involvement Liaison for the Coral Springs Police Department. The Police Department coordinated an Angel Tree toy delivery for underserved families for more than 20 years. The items for Angel Tree were purchased by City employees and reached about 50 families each year. To increase the amount of families they could
assist in the community, the Coral Springs Police Department turned to the community to organize an annual Toy Drive in 2014. As a result, they have had tremendous success in making the holidays brighter for hundreds of families in Coral Springs. The toy drive brings together local youth and the City’s police officers. “Often times the youth have this image that the officers are there only during bad or difficult times, this gives an opportunity for youth to see that there are positive interactions with the youth as well and that we really do care,” said Vargas. For more details on the toy drive, visit www.coralsprings.org.

Coral Springs & Parkland Holiday Events BY NICOL JENKINS The Cities encourage residents to join in the holiday spirit at one or more of their events. Downtown in December will take place on December 7th from 5 pm to 9 pm at Coral Springs City Hall, 9500 W. Sample Road. Now in its sixth year, the City of Coral Springs is set to kick off the holiday season with the fun, familyfriendly Downtown in December. This exciting event, presented in partnership with Broward Health Coral Springs, is for all ages. Activities will include the City’s formal tree lighting, a visit from Santa Claus and the enchanting movie- Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms– shown on a huge 3-story screen. Children will have an opportunity to take a free train ride around City Hall, and back again this year will be the free “ice” skating rink experience. City event planners have received an advanced weather warning, which indicates Coral Springs will experience snowfall that evening. That expected snowfall is just what South Florida needs to make Santa feel welcome. Children will also have an opportunity to “make and take” holiday-themed crafts, as well as free milk and cookies from Walmart. Families should plan on coming hungry, as food and beverages will be available for purchase from more than a dozen of our top-rated food truck vendors. Be sure to wear your dancing shoes because the City will have music and a dance party area too. Another holiday event not to miss is the City of Coral Springs Annual Holiday Parade, which will be on Wednesday, December 11th at 7 p.m. The parade will feature marching bands, decorated floats and other entries along Sample Road from Coral Springs Drive to City Hall. The theme is “Holiday Heroes”. Before the holiday parade, individuals and families will participate in the Coral Springs Holiday Mile along Sample Road near Coral Springs Drive at 5 pm. This will be a timed one-mile event, with awards for the top three male and female participants in each age category. “The goal of hosting these events is to bring together the community to celebrate the holiday season. For example, the holiday parade has been held for more than 20 years, and features 70 plus entries, thousands of participants, and 15,000 plus spectators. Downtown in December has grown each year since 2014, now hosting more than 3,000 people at City Hall,” said Christine Parkinson Jahrsdoerfer, Creative Services Manager for the City of Coral Springs. The City of Parkland will also host holiday events this month. Don’t miss Light Up The Park on Friday, December 13th. The event will be held from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Parkland Amphitheater, located at 10561 Trails End. There will be a ton of lights, local performers, arts & crafts, food trucks, games, music, and a holiday show. Search your closet for your coziest mittens and boots! The City of Parkland presents their annual Snowfest event. On Thursday, December 19th from 5 pm to 8 pm, a frosty cold front will come through Pine Trails Park. Featuring dual snow slides as tall as mountains, a toddler slide and snow area, crafts, music, food trucks, and more. They will bring in more than 50 tons of snow to transform the park into a winter wonderland. For more details on Coral Springs holiday events, visit CoralSprings.org/events. Giving HOPE for the New Year BY JOHN A. BRODIE
A
local non-profit organization known as Fellowship Living (FellowshipLiving.org) has been saving lives locally for over 14 years. They depend on donations for much of the work they do. Fellowship Vision All who pass through our doors will awaken the potential that has been lying dormant as a result of drugs and alcohol. From their desire for recovery through education, dedication, and personal growth, each will become centered in self awareness and grow in wisdom, enabling them to live sober, happy, healthy, and prosperous lives. Rick Riccardi, founder of Fellowship Living Facilities, Inc. is regarded as a pioneer in the Florida recovery community and nationally for his unique impact on the state’s approach to the addiction crisis. “Fellowship Living” has been cited around the country as an example of “Recovery in Action.” We asked Rick Riccardi for a short description of the organization he has built: “Fellowship Living Facilities, Inc. is a nonprofit (501c3) organization dedicated to providing a structured sober living environment for men and
women in recovery from Substance Use Disorder (SUD). The Men’s and Women’s Twelve Step Fellowship Recovery houses are managed by Fellowship Living Facilities Inc. They provide a foundation for men and women to grow into their new lives through their inner journey by staying self motivated and committed to the program and house guidelines from the A A and NA experience. All locations offer 12 Step Meetings with several alliances and resources that aid in support and recovery.” “We at Fellowship Living Facilities know that we all must broaden the conversation around addiction and recovery to save lives. Many families suffer in silence and, sometimes are in denial or do not recognize the seriousness of their family member’s SUDS (substance use disorder) problem.” The fact is that addiction does not discriminate and the refusal or inability to acknowledge
its severity can have fatal consequences. In 2017, we lost over 72,000 Americans to opioid overdoses; that number does not include alcohol and other drugs. If you see symptoms of addiction in a loved one, there is help. You can always make a confidential inquiry by contacting info@ffrco.org or calling Fellowship Living at (954) 972-9495. n Our City Media is supporting the fundraising effort that will help Fellowship Living restore hope for more individuals over the holidays and into the coming year. This is a crisis affecting us all and you can help. Please visit www.fellowship-recovery.org to learn more and make a donation that will save lives – it could be someone you know.

Broward Schools Take A ‘Magic Leap’ BY CHRISTY JAILLET
L
ocal High School Students will soon be living in Augmented Reality! If you look at students wearing futuristic-looking sunglasses, they just might be seeing a lot more than you when they peer back. Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), has partnered with the Florida Panthers Foundation and Plantation-based startup Magic Leap to provide students with cutting-edge technology. The Magic Leap One device may look like a cool pair of sunglasses but it is a powerful headset computer that allows users to experience their own virtual worlds in combination with the real world. It
makes the unreal feel real. The spatial computing headsets let users see and interact with digital (virtual) content in the real world. This headset computer is a portal into worlds within our world. For teachers, the possibilities are endless, such as bringing dinosaurs to life, immersing students in art and music, virtually flying next to an astronaut, taking a virtual field trip for whale watching, and much more, all without leaving the classroom. This virtual world exposure is being incorporated into students’ curriculum to expand high school educational experiences and increase engagement. An agreement, approved by the Broward County School Board in October, equips the District with a total of 90 Magic Leap One devices. Of the 90, the Florida Panthers Foundation is donating 25, Magic Leap is supplying five and the remainder are being purchased by the District. Magic Leap will also provide teachers with professional development to help incorporate these
devices into their instruction. They will also be offering mentorship opportunities for high school students. “We are excited and grateful for our new relationship with Magic Leap and the Florida Panthers Foundation. It provides our students with opportunities to learn and work with cutting-edge technology,” said Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “We’re bringing the future into the classroom to inspire and engage our students. It’s through the support of our local businesses and organizations that we are able to continually innovate and provide our students with world-class educational experiences.”

Bankruptcy Court: A Forum for Student Loan Relief? BY: ALYSSA C. BAER, ESQ. any of the 44 million Americans, who are straddled with Student Loan Debt are struggling to get by. While debts like credit cards, medical bills, auto repossessions and even foreclosure deficiencies are dischargeable in bankruptcy with little effort, the ability to discharge crippling student loan debt is a much more difficult task. Specifically, the current Bankruptcy Code maintains that student loans can only be discharged if a Debtor proves that requiring the repayment of the student loans would impose an undue hardship. In Florida, this means that student loans are dischargeable if based upon current financial circumstances, the debtor cannot repay the loans and maintain a standard of living for herself and her dependents, that this state of affairs is likely to continue through the majority of the repayment period, and that the debtor has already made a good faith attempt to repay the loans. This is a very difficult standard for a Debtor to meet, and therefore, very few cases exist where student loans were deemed dischargeable by the Bankruptcy Court. The student loan struggle may remind you of the foreclosure crisis, which financially crippled many Florida residents. Therefore, similar to the programs created by the Federal Government to assist mortgage borrowers, the Department of Education has developed several “affordable” repayment option plans for student loan borrowers. Many of these payment plans are Income Driven Repayment Plans, whereby the student loan borrower would make student loan debt payments that they can afford, based upon their actual income.

Borrowers often cannot determine which program would yield the best result of them, and others may have trouble enrolling in these programs altogether. As a result, the Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Florida spearheaded a program to allow Bankruptcy Debtors to easily enter into a federal student loan repayment program that helps them remain current with their student loans, and eventually have them forgiven. The Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida will likely follow suit in adopting a similar program. This program will be very much like the Mortgage Modification Mediation Program which was introduced in the Bankruptcy Court in the aftermath of the foreclosure crisis in Florida. That program was designed to provide borrowers with a level playing field and bring lenders to the table to negotiate a workout of the debt that was feasible for both parties. This model is now being adapted to the student loan issue to help borrowers find a way to pay back their loans without hindering their ability to make ends meet. When exploring options for repayment of student loans or any type of debt, it is important to consider all avenues for relief. It is always a good idea to speak with an experienced bankruptcy and debt relief attorney to make sure that you are taking advantage of the option that is best for you.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR: PARKLAND
Parkland Update MAYOR CHRISTINE HUNSCHOFSKY t is hard to believe that the last month of 2019 is already upon us. I hope everyone had a very happy Thanksgiving and was able to spend some quality time with family and friends. So often it is easy to get caught up preparing for the holidays and we may forget to slow down, enjoy the special moments, and remember what the holidays are really all about. Personally, this is my favorite time of the year. The weather is (slightly) cooler, there are several holiday events throughout the community where we can catch up with friends, and my family is able to spend more time together. For those who are missing loved ones, the holidays are an especially difficult time of year. Please reach out to your friends and family members who are missing loved ones. Let them know you are thinking about them and you are there for them if they need you. No one should feel alone during the holidays. We have several events and activities happening in December in Parkland. The Farmers’ Market continues with an additional craft fair on December 1 and 15 from 9am-1pm at the Equestrian Center. This is a great opportunity to get some last minute holiday gifts and enjoy our wonderful outdoor market. We also have a “Light Up The Park” event on December 13 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at the Parkland Amphitheatre in Pine Trails Park. There will be a holiday show, food trucks, and stage performances. December 19 is the annual Parkland Snowfest for our residents. Kids and parents love this event complete with snow—including dual snow slides so kids can race their friends. There is a special area for toddlers and everyone can enjoy crafts, music, and more. This year the event will be held at Pine Trails Park. Registration for this event opens to Parkland residents on December 2nd at 9am at the P-REC and online. This is one of the most popular events of the year and it fills up quickly so register early. Our next city Commission meetings are on Wednesday, December 4 at 7pm and Wednesday, December 18 at 6pm (recognitions) and 7pm (regular meeting). You can view all Commission and Advisory Board meeting agendas at www. cityofparkland.org/cc. As 2019 comes to a close, we have much to reflect upon. Each year comes with its challenges, yet we are fortunate to have so many members of our community who volunteer to help others and make our community, as well as surrounding communities, a better place. It can be so easy to get caught up in negativity and toxic thinking. In fact some days, it seems like that is all there is. Therefore it is important to seek out the good and to focus on progress, to make a conscious effort to meet each person with compassion and to meet each day with a renewed sense of joy and determination. May we continue to focus on shared goals and working together toward common solutions. I would like to extend my best wishes to you and your family for a wonderful holiday season and great start to 2020. Thank you for being part of our community, thank you for all you do, and thank you for continuously paying it forward and giving back. I always love hearing from members of the community, so please feel free to reach out to me via email at chunschofsky@ cityofparkland.org, telephone at City Hall 954-753-5040, or any time you see me out and about at community events in Parkland.

One Restaurant, Two Menus, and Surprisingly Delightful BY TERRY JAILLET

ould it surprise you if I told you a bagel shop serves the best Lobster roll in South Florida? Be prepared to be surprised. The New York Bagel Factory When I walked into The New York Bagel Factory, the restaurant felt exactly like what it was originally designed to be: a state-of-the-art bagel shop. As I walked through, I glided by a set of windows that allowed me to watch the entire bagel production process: bags of flour are turned into dough that is kneaded, then proofed and boiled, and finally, baked. Their bagels will satisfy the most ardent New Yorker for authenticity: perfectly chewy and always fresh. And, there is a near-limitless number of spreads and toppings on the menu. It’s the kind of place you would take a team of 12-year soccer players after an early Saturday game. They have something to keep everyone satisfied. But I was here to eat seafood? As I made my way to the back of the deep, brightly-lit restaurant things started to make a bit more sense. There is a 25-foot long floor-to-ceiling banner with the words “The New England Seafood Shack” prominently displayed across from the counter where orders are placed. I later learned that the banner is hiding a
soon-to-open room dedicated to New England. The New England room will be decorated like an old seafood restaurant, feature a raw-bar and unlike the rest of the restaurant offer table service featuring beer and wine with evening hours. As I sat down to sample the food, still wondering how these two, seemingly incompatible concepts came together, I met Jeffery Dolinsky. Things became much clearer. It was very lightly in January battered and cooked to moist, flaky of 2014 perfection. Over-breaded fish has and become an almost epidemic these days, this had just the right amount. It was paired with a very simple, sweet coleslaw and a bowl of freshly made “Chowdah.” The New England Seafood Shack’s Clam Chowder can hold its own against any chowder I’ve had. Its key is in its simplicity and the freshness of the seafood. I also got to try the Ipswich full-bellied fried clams, which were amazing. The fried scallops are to-die-for. The healthy portion I tried was tender and sweet. The same care that went into breading the Cod was evident in the light seasoning encrusting these

crustaceans. The restaurant sources its scallops from the owner’s home town. It’s unlikely any make the journey from the cold-water seafloor off of New England to your mouth faster than the ones served here. The star of this show, however, is the lobster roll. As mine was being served, a patron from a neighboring table called over to me in a strong Boston accent, “It tastes so good. Makes you think you’re up north!” The bun was buttered and toasted to a nice crisp while the internal bread was still soft and warm. The handpicked Maine lobster was chilled to perfection with just a bit of mayo. The combination melted in my mouth. My companion for our tasting meal barely got a bite. The Verdict. The New York Bagel Factory and New England Seafood Shack is a truly odd combination. There is something undeniably weird about eating a lobster roll, with coastal Maine quality, at what appears to be a bagel shop. But, somehow this works here. What is not weird, however, is the authentic quality of the food. All of the dishes were prepared with care, cooked to perfect temperatures and were seasoned perfectly. This was a delicious experience. It really is “Two Great Menus, One Great Restaurant”. ■ The New York Bagel Factory and New England Seafood Shack are located at 2554 N University Drive in Coral Springs. he City of Coral Springs Commission would like to wish our residents a happy holiday season! Our City will be kicking off holiday festivities on Saturday, December 7, with our widely popular Downtown in December event at City Hall (9500 Sample Road). The fun starts at 5 p.m. and rumor has it, there is a chance we may see snow on the Great Lawn! The event includes holiday treats, free cookies, train rides, ice skating, music, dancing and the feature-film – The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. On Wednesday December 11, you are invited to join us for our City’s annual Holiday Parade – Salute to Heroes. Decorative floats honoring our local and national heroes will make their way down a one mile stretch along Sample Road from Coral Springs Drive to City Hall. The parade starts at 7 p.m., to avoid traffic delays, arrive early. Residents and businesses can expect road closures and detours around the parade route starting at 5 p.m., visit coralsprings/ holidayparade for details. Have you had the opportunity to visit the Coral Springs Farmers’ Market at its new location? The market takes place on alternating Sundays through April 5 from 9:30 am – 1 pm at the corner of Sample Road and Coral Hills Drive. For a list of vendors and dates, visit coralspringsfarmersmarket.com. There are so many opportunities to shop local in Coral Springs this holiday season. One our greatest priorities is to see our City businesses flourish. This includes a comprehensive strategic plan to retain existing business, while attracting new commerce. If you enjoy a specific shop, restaurant or service provider in Coral Springs, be sure to highlight them and tag our Economic Development Office Facebook page @CoralSpringsEDO. The Coral Springs Police Department is once again collecting toys and donations for their annual Toy Drive. All toys collected are provided to underserved youth identified by our School Resource Officers and local clergy in Coral Springs. To learn more or get involved, call the Community Involvement Unit at (954) 344-1833. Dont’ Let Package Thieves Spoil Your Holiday CHIEF JON SHAW s we approach the holiday season and you start to add things to your online carts, let’s start planning on ways to keep your package deliveries safe. Today we’re going to showcase 2 Amazon services (Amazon Key+Smart Lock Kit + Amazon Hub Lockers) that can help to combat package thieves and create a safer alternative for the protection of your purchases. Before we highlight these services, let’s talk about why: By mid-November neighborhoods in South Florida start to fill with the sounds of delivery trucks. ‘Tis the season, right? Delivery trucks can be seen delivering packages from the early morning to the late evening. According to published reports, UPS, FedEx, and the United States Postal Service (USPS) are expecting another busy 2019 holiday season. Here’s what each delivery company expects in 2019: ▸ UPS estimates 750 million packages will be delivered. ▸ FedEx expects to deliver 380-400 million packages. ▸ USPS estimates they’ll deliver 15 billion pieces, to include 850 milion packages. With so many packages being delivered this holiday season, it’s inevitable that thieves will be actively attempting to take packages from front porches or other delivery hot spots. Amazon Lockers Amazon Hub Lockers are secure, self-service kiosks where you have your Amazon.com packages delivered to; you can pick up your packages at any time/ place that is convenient for you. ▸ Amazon Lockers are free with your Amazon Prime membership. ▸ Ship to a locker if you know you won’t be home. ▸ Return any Amazon purchase to a locker instead of shipping it back. - Learn more about Amazon Hub Lockers by visiting: bit.ly/ AmazonLockersInfo Amazon Key + Smart Lock Kit The Amazon Key and Smart Lock Kit is a smart system for your life. It is a simple solution that gives you the freedom to enjoy keyless smart access & a way to have your Amazon packages delivered directly to the inside of your garage, home, and car. MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF
Coral Springs Update CHIEF CLYDE PARRY
D
ecember is a busy time for most of us as we prepare for the holiday season. There is always so much going on that it is easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. It is my hope that we can slow down and take a moment to be thankful for all we have, show some kindness to others and enjoy our friends and family. At the police department, we are getting ready for several yearly events. These events put the holidays in perspective for us and truly show how a little kindness can go a long way. On December 10, we will participate in our first Shop with A Cop event at the Target located at 4400 State Rd 7. The second Shop with A Cop will be at the Walmart located at 3801 Turtle Creek Dr, on December 12. At these events, children have the opportunity to shop with our officers to help make their holidays a little bit brighter. The spirit of giving is alive and well in Coral Springs. Members of our department feely truly blessed. Many show this through our Angel Tree
Program: School Resource Officers and Road Patrol Officers identify families in need. Our Angle Trees go up, and our employees answer the call by providing gifts. These gifts are delivered to homes on December 16 and 17. On December 18, Kohls Cares will assist us distributing even more gifts, at Lyons Park, to anyone to attend. On December 20th we will deliver gifts to Abi’s Place. Abi’s Place is a nonprofit, dedicated to helping children with autism and other complex disabilities. Seeing the smiles on the children’s faces is truly heartwarming. Many of our officers will be working longer hours dedicated to keeping our citizens safe. We will be in high-volume shopping plazas looking for vehicle burglars. Vehicle burglars prey upon shoppers who run from one store to the next to finish their holiday shopping. Remember to never store packages in plain sight and always lock your doors. Officers will also patrol neighborhoods looking for “porch pirates” who steal items left on doorsteps by delivery services. You can help us combat these thefts by reporting any suspicious activity in your neighborhood. Remember you can “Make a Call and Make a Difference” by calling 911 for an emergency or (954)
344-1800 for non-emergency calls. I hope to see you at the “Downtown in December” event on December 7 at Coral Springs City Hall from 5-9 PM, where our officers will accept toy donations. I also hope you can come out to watch the annual Holiday Parade on December 11 at 7 PM. Both of these events are fun for the whole family and a great way to get you in the holiday spirit. If you haven’t already, please connect with me on Facebook @ChiefParry. Have a very Happy Holiday Season!

Maintain, Don’t Gain, This Holiday Season While the holidays are usually not the best time to try and lose weight, it is possible to avoid gaining weight. Here are 10 tips to help you prevent packing on the pounds from all the food and drink that’s plentiful during the holiday season. 5. Get Enough Zzzzs. It’s a busy time of year. Adequate sleep is often the last thing on your mind, but it’s important to know how sleep affects your weight. “When the body is tired, it has higher levels of ghrelin – the eat-more hormone,” said Cathy ClarkReyes, a registered dietitian with Baptist Health Primary Care. 6. Move. Don’t let the “busyness” of the holidays sidetrack exercise. “Holiday time does not need to be synonymous with weight gain,” said Amy Kimberlain, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator with Baptist Health South Florida. “After a big meal, encourage family and friends to participate in movement-centered activities, such as going for a group walk or playing a friendly game of football instead of sitting and watching football on TV.”
1. Weigh Yourself. Weigh yourself regularly to keep yourself accountable and steadfast on the goal of maintaining your current weight. 2. Track What You Eat and Drink. Use a food journal or mobile app to track everything you eat and drink each day. Studies show that tracking your food and drink intake leads to better weight management. 3. Scratch Screen Time at Meal Time. Encourage more mindful meals by banning cell phones at the table. Focusing on meaningful conversations and connections with friends and family can help slow down the pace of eating, increasing the likelihood of making mindful decisions about what to eat and, ultimately, fewer calories consumed. 4. Snack Easy. Eating between meals can easily pack on the pounds. Before you grab a quick bite, try drinking no-calorie water first. Hunger is often mistaken for dehydration.
7. Limit Alcohol. Liquid calories can add up quickly. And consuming too much alcohol lessens impulse control, which can lead to overeating. To keep calories at bay, limit how much alcohol you drink. Cut a drink’s sugar content by pouring half alcohol and half club soda or tonic. 8. Watch the Sugar. Staying away from soda, fruit juice, sports drinks and other sugary beverages can save hundreds of calories a day. Instead of eating sweet baked goods and other sugar-laden foods that are bountiful this time of year, load up on healthy fruits and vegetables. 9. Feature Fruits and Vegetables. Each plate should be made up of two-thirds fruit or vegetables. Keep a basket of fruit on the counter and make it your go-to when you need a snack. 10. Be Grateful. Work a few quiet minutes into the end of each day during the holidays to reflect on all you have to be thankful for. This is, after all, the focus of the holiday season. With a little thought and focus it is possible to maintain, and not gain, weight this holiday season.
