Time for a Christmas Truce
D
ecember 24, 1914 was the date of one of the most improbable acts of collective goodwill and fellowship in history. German soldiers conspired with their British and French opponents to declare an informal ceasefire along the Western Front of World War One. After five months of the worst carrange in human history, rank and file soldiers declared what would later be called “The Christmas Truce.” The truce began when groups of soldiers sang Christmas Carols from their trenches. These carols were answered, in turn, by songs from the enemy. Soon, arrangements were made to recover bodies from the “no man’s land” between the opposing forces. This led to interactions between the forces, ending, believe it or not, with gift exchanges and even a soccer match. We often focus on the things that divide us in the modern world. Social media and political journalism highlight differences and frequently induce anger, jealousy, and rage. Next time you find yourself in a fit of anger or a divisive rant, think of the soldiers on the Western Front. Those poor souls, who’s life expectancies were measured in days, not years, found common ground with the very people who were trying to kill them. Maybe, this holiday season we can do the same.

HOME TOWN HEROES
SOUTH FLORIDA SAILOR KEEPS WATCH on Veteran’s Day Far from Home
L
By Terry Jaillet
ocal dignitaries and veterans marked Veterans Day last month with somber ceremonies, parades, and receptions. Veterans of all stripes told stories of past glory and raised drinks to lost comrades. While we remember warriors of the past, today’s Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, and Sailors continued to serve the calling of defending the United States. One of these service members is Helicopter Crewman Second Class Joseph Aubrey, from Coral Springs. As we were remembering the sacrifices of those who came before him, Joseph was flying in his MH-60S Seahawk helicopter more than 10,000 miles from home.
Joseph serves aboard the USS Jackson, a littoral combat ship that is part of the U.S. 7th Fleet in the South China Sea, whose mission is to support a free and open IndoPacific region. Littoral combat ships are relatively small naval vessels designed for operations near shore. These ships are fast and flexible and can be configured to perform a wide variety of roles. While the exact number and location of deployed U.S. forces are classified, it is believed that more than 170,000 American service members are stationed overseas. These men and women, like Crewman Second Class Aubrey are serving their country in the same way the Veterans we celebrated last month did in the past. The period where parents can apply for their child to attend a different school, or the school choice application window, opens on December 1 and will be closed on February 1.
School Choice
By state law, students may apply to attend any public school that has not reached capacity, regardless of their home address. To determine which schools are accepting applications, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) reviews enrollment data and projected students. Parents may request a school that is accepting applications by completing a School Choice Application during the application window. School Choice Applications are awarded using a computerized random selection process. If more seats at a school become available during the
School Choice process, additional selections from the application pool will be made. There is no guarantee that a child’s application will be granted.
How To Apply
There are three alternative options available for families. These options include Magnet Programs, Nova Schools, or a reassignment School. Parents can submit one application for each option per child. Applications must be submitted on BCPS’ website prior to February 8. Parents will be notified if their child was selected on March 3, 2022. If selected, they must contact their child’s new school and enroll by March 11 or that seat will be vacated. If a child’s application was not awarded, parents can apply for another School Choice option or remain in that school’s applicant pool and register the child at his/her assigned school.

ommunity luminaire and champion in education Debra ‘Debbi’ Hixon is to be honored at the Publix Super Markets Charities 2021 “Hall of Fame” Awards. Debra ‘Debbi’ Hixon is a 32-year nationally certified teacher in Broward County and serves as a countywide Broward County School Board member, Seat 9. Born and raised in Hollywood, Debbi attended Hollywood Hills Elementary, Olsen Middle, and graduated from South Broward High School (SBHS), class of 1984. She credits Mrs. Gloria McIntosh (Ms. Mac), her 10th-grade biology teacher, with making an indelible, positive influence on her life. An engaging teacher who was tough, fair, and supportive and with an honest, realistic, and refreshing perspective, Ms. Mac inspired Debbi to become an environmental advocate and her influence molded Debbi into the popular science teacher she became.
While at SBHS, they formed a relationship that continued throughout college and into Debbi’s student teaching semester, when Ms. Mac was her supervising teacher. Ms. Mac taught her how to take a different approach to reaching all students and write comprehensive and engaging lesson plans along with advice to have an extra pair of flats handy (“roller skates”) for long lab days. Debbi calls Ms. Mac “the standard that all science teachers should be measured by.” Prior to South Broward, Debbi taught science and was a swim coach at Blanche Ely High School, where she sponsored numerous science-based clubs. As magnet coordinator of the Maritime/ Marine Science and Technology Program, she connected students with maritime organizations, providing hands-on experiences through field trips, summer camps and internships. She created a Career Launch Competition with the MIASF, providing a platform for students to win scholarships and internships. As a teacher and mother of a special needs student, Debbi is on the Parent and Community Involvement Task Force where she helped plan
and implement BCPS’s Parent University, introducing new teaching methods and technologies to enhance virtual school experiences during the pandemic. Her primary goal and motivation are to keep schools safe, expand mental health support for students and staff, provide teachers and support staff with adequate pay and the resources they need to help students succeed, and build open and positive relationships between schools and communities. Debbi is president of the Chris Hixon Athletic Scholarship Foundation, dedicated to the memory of her husband, the Stoneman Douglas High School athletic director. Debbi serves on the Stand With Parkland board, a national association advocating for practical public safety reforms focused on the safety of children and staff at school, improved mental health support and responsible firearms ownership. She is vice president of 4FNOW, which partners with local law enforcement to host voluntary gun buyback programs. Debbi graduated from Florida State University double majoring in biology and education.

Coral Springs Police Toy Drive

Open for Donations
oral Springs police want to bring holiday cheer to children who would otherwise not have toys this Christmas. The Coral Springs Police Department is collecting unwrapped, new toys for children less fortunate in our community. The toy drive will be held from November 14 through December 15. The City’s police officers are encouraging the community to donate a toy this holiday season. Suggested toys include sport-themed items, action figures, Legos, baby dolls, Play-Doh, toy cars, and board games. Please, no stuffed animals or used toys. They are accepting items for newborns
all the way up to 18 years of age. Drop off locations are the Public Safety Building Lobby, 2801 Coral Springs Drive, and the lobby is open 24/7; Coral Springs City Hall in the Mall, 9239 W. Atlantic Blvd.; and Coral Springs City Hall Lobby, 9500 W. Sample Road. In addition, they are partnering with Toy Express, which is a new toy store in Coral Springs, and customers can make a purchase in the store and place their donation in the box provided. The City of Coral Springs has been participating in the Toy Drive for 7 years since 2014. The toys will be distributed to children that have been identified as having a need. They are identified by their School Resource Officers, road patrol officers that come in contact with families, and Detectives from the SVU. The toys will be distributed from December 16th through December 18th. The officers will take the toys and deliver them to their homes. “The goal of this event is to give back to those less fortunate in the community that the police officers serve. We appreciate the support of our residents and business
owners this holiday season,” said Monica Vargas, Community Involvement Liaison for the Coral Springs Police Department. The Police Department coordinated an Angel Tree toy delivery for underserved families for more than 20 years. The items for Angel Tree were purchased by City employees and reached about 50 families each year. To increase the number of families they could assist in the community, the Coral Springs Police Department turned to the community to organize an annual Toy Drive in 2014. As a result, they have had tremendous success in making the holidays brighter for hundreds of families in Coral Springs. The toy drive brings together local youth and the City’s police officers. “Oftentimes the youth have this image that the officers are there only during bad or difficult times, this gives an opportunity for youth to see that there are positive interactions with the youth as well and that we really do care,” said Vargas.

ASK THE EXPERT
WILL YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS MAKE IT PAST JANUARY?
N
Feldman & Feldman counsellors at law, p.a.
elder law • special needs law estate planning & administration
By Michael Feldman, Esquire
ew Year’s resolutions. We all make them. We all try to maintain them. Whether it’s getting into shape, spending more time with family, or cleaning out the guest room closet, resolutions usually make it just as far as the end of January. This year, it’s not too late to accomplish one resolution that is often left neglected: establishing an estate plan. Contrary to popular belief, you need not be extremely wealthy to have an “estate plan.” In fact, *everyone* has an estate plan, which is, simply put: Who will receive your property when you die and how will they get it? Of course, it’s better to actually “plan” your estate plan in advance in order to ensure your assets pass to those whom you wish in the manner you desire. A comprehensive estate plan addresses three major concerns: 1) effectively and efficiently pass your assets to the intended beneficiaries; 2) protect the inheritance of special needs beneficiaries (such as a disabled child; and 3) plan for the possibility of your future incapacity. The first step when establishing an estate plan is to meet with an estate planning attorney to review your estate planning goals. Our firm provides clients with a questionnaire to complete prior to their consultation. This allows us to understand the client’s unique circumstances so our meeting can be focused on how to best address the client’s concerns. Every estate plan should include a Last Will & Testament and a set of Advance Directives, which allow you to designate someone to handle your legal, financial, and medical affairs if you cannot handle them for yourself. Advance Directives should be tailored to the needs of the client and include a Power of Attorney, Healthcare Surrogate Designation, and a Living Will. While it is possible to use joint ownership or “payable on death” designations to transfer assets after death, a Will provides a valuable safety net should direct-inheritance methods fail, as well as handling unforeseen assets that become part of your estate (such as a recovery from estate-related litigation). The use of a revocable living trust is sometimes advisable to both avoid probate of assets and handle circumstances that may prove disastrous when relying on POD designations alone, such as when dealing with minors and special needs beneficiaries. As both an elder law and estate planning firm, we must be mindful of factors that can impact our client’s estate planning goals, such as the possibility of long term care in an ALF or skilled nursing facility. Often, we assist clients with qualifying for public benefits (such as veterans benefits or Medicaid), while maintaining their estate planning desires, to the extent possible. If you already have an estate plan, then you’re ahead of the game! But life is not static. We recommend reviewing your estate plan with an attorney every 2-3 years or after major life changes, such as divorce, the birth of a child, the passing of a beneficiary. January is almost here. It’s not too late to make 2021 the year you address your estate planning needs. Then you can finally get to work on the guest room closet.

appy Holidays! Time has flown by this year and it’s hard to believe that the holidays are already here. This has always been my favorite time of the year. It is an opportunity to reflect on what is truly important in life and an occasion to celebrate with family and friends. It’s important to make these memories special since they stay with us and our children over the years. When my kids were young, we started many family traditions including visiting Holiday Fantasy of Lights at Tradewinds Park (holidaylightsdrivethru.com). Now that they are older and away at college and work, I especially treasure this time of year because everyone comes home to celebrate the holidays with us. Although our boys are older now, they thankfully still humor my husband and I and go with us to check out the amazing display lights. This year for the holidays, my office will be starting a tradition by hosting an open house on Saturday, December 11, from 11 am to 1 pm at our office at Coconut Creek City Hall 4800 W. Copans Rd. Please stop by to say hello and have some refreshments. My team and I would love to see you and hear about some of your holiday traditions. We will also share more about how we can be of service to you and your family as well as the work we do in the community and in Tallahassee. On Saturday, December 18, from 9 am to 12 pm (while supplies last) at 5280 NW 40th Street in Coconut Creek, we are teaming up with Farm Share and the City of Coconut Creek to host a drive through food giveaway. The holidays can be a difficult time for many working to make ends meet. We wanted to make it easier by providing food for those in need. You don’t need to register to participate. If you are interested in helping out and volunteering on the day of the event, please email us at HDist096@myfloridahouse. gov with “volunteer” in the subject line and your name and contact information in the email. We will be providing service hours for all volunteers. As 2021 comes to a close, we all have much to reflect on. Each year brings its challenges and how we navigate through them and who we have around us can make all the difference. While it is an often used phrase, it is one that I regularly look to “Be the change you wish to see in this world”. As the world around us appears to become more divided and cruel, we each have an opportunity to make it better by practicing understanding, graciousness, and compassion. While no one of us can change the world, each of us has a part in making a positive difference in our homes, our communities, and our world. Whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, another holiday, or no holiday at all, my family and I wish you and your family a happy and healthy December and all the best for the New Year ahead. May we all be blessed with family and friends and surrounded by love and care. Please reach out to me at HDist096@myfloridahouse.gov or 954-956-5600 if I can ever be of assistance. It is an honor to be able to serve District 96 and the Coconut Creek, Parkland, Margate, and Coral Springs communities. Thank you!

This effort is why our Deck the Halls holiday décor contest is so popular each year. We encourage residents to register their festively decorated homes with photos and location, so that we can share it with members of the community. The deadline to participate is December 9th, to register visit www.coralsprings.org/holidaycontest. As you prepare for the holidays, we remind you to be cognizant of what you place in your blue bin to ensure our recycling is not contaminated. Please remember: • Christmas trees, large cardboard and excess boxes stacked together may be placed for collection with your bulk waste. • Always discard plastic film, bubble wrap and Styrofoam from boxes into the green cart. • Wrapping paper with foil is not recyclable. • Electronics may be recycled at the Waste Transfer Station. For more information about recycling visit www.coralsprings. org/recycling. As you prepare for the holidays, please keep in mind Waste Pro will not be servicing on Christmas Day, Saturday, December 25th. They will run its routes as normal on December 24th and will resume its normal schedule on December 26th. As always, if you would like to schedule an appointment with any of our City Officials, please call 954- 344- 5911. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
PARKLAND UPDATE
T
By Mayor Rich Walker
his is usually the time of year when we think most about brilliant decorations, festive get-togethers with families and friends, delicious meals, and the hustle and bustle of shopping for presents. As we mature, we realize of course the gift of giving is much more satisfying than receiving a gift. The holiday season is filled with opportunities to give. Whether the request is a donation of money, food, gifts, or other goods, it always gratifies and humbles the heart to help others. There are other incredible opportunities throughout the holiday season that I would like to mention—volunteer opportunities. Whether you participate through your children’s school, your place of worship, a community organization, or even an online group, there is little that will truly fill your soul more than volunteering your time to help an individual, family, group, or cause. I am not suggesting to not donate.

My wife and I make it a point to ensure our children know that making donations to others should be a regular part of community involvement. There are many causes that rely heavily on donations to ensure people in need can receive the help we all want for them. Volunteerism is an entirely different level of donation. My experience has been, volunteering benefits the volunteer as much as the recipient. Every time I volunteer, I am both humbled and honored to serve others. Some of the best moments we have had as a family are those that have been spent volunteering together. In fact, our youngest child Hayes has grown up with the notion that Daddy and Momma are indeed Santa’s helpers. And when we volunteer with other members of our community, it unifies and bonds us. If ever there was a time when growing closer with other members of our community was important, I believe it is now. Social media has barriers, lacks emotion,
and has so many detractors. Working with others—even people we do not know—on a common cause not only helps people in need, it helps us put aside any differences we might have. It introduces people into our lives who we may not have otherwise connected with. This itself is a true gift. Volunteering is the social medicine we all need to take on a regular basis to nurture our soul and calibrate our station in life. The holiday season more than any other time, affords a multitude of opportunities to give of yourself to help your fellow neighbor. If you would like to share your thoughts about volunteering, or perhaps share a volunteer experience, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@cityofparkland.org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. Of course, I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to talk with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website cityofparkland.org and click on the social media icon that you prefer, to ensure you stay informed on events and helpful information.
