The President Isn’t the Only One Who Takes an Oath of Office
L
ike many people, I have been troubled by the state of politics in our country. Disagreements over policy or governing philosophy have been replaced, in part, by raw anger and even hatred. By the time you read this article, the presidential election will likely be over and we will either be preparing for a new president or four more years of the current administration. Regardless of who is elected president, he will recite the same oath that every commissioned officer in the United States military does. It is the same oath that I recited in 1993 when I was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps and it will be the same oath that future presidents, generals, and ensigns will give. What I find most remarkable about this oath is the fact that our presidents and military officers swear loyalty to a document. They promise to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States.” The commitment of our officers and presidents isn’t to the president, a monarch, a party, or even the people of the United States. They swear allegiance to a piece of paper; to the very idea of America. I am optimistic that years from now, we will be able to collectively look back at this time in our history with a shrug and a sigh knowing that we, as Americans, are more alike than different. And, that the diversity in our society is part of what makes our country great. In the meantime, it is heartening to know that the quarter of a million commissioned officers in our military will continue to serve the constitution and not one man, regardless of his party.

26th Thanksgiving– Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you gather with family and loved ones to celebrate each other and give thanks for all that we have. In the words of John F. Kennedy, “Over three centuries ago, our forefathers in Virginia and in Massachusetts, far from home in a lonely wilderness, set aside a time of thanksgiving. On the appointed day, they gave reverent thanks for their safety, for the health of their children, for the fertility of their fields, for the love which bound them together, and for the faith which united them with their God.”

When your child is born, their mouth is free of the tooth decay causing bacteria Mutans Streptococci (MS). Multiple studies have shown that infants are first inoculated with MS via mother-child transmission. While it is impossible to keep your child totally free of disease causing pathogens like MS, having a regimented hygiene and diet plan is the first place to start. Simple things such as not letting them fall asleep with a bottle and cleaning their teeth as soon as they erupt with gauze and water will greatly decrease their risk of getting tooth decay. Do you offer laughing gas and sedation dentistry? Yes, part of the specialty training that pediatric dentists receive is in pediatric analgesia. Currently over 1 million adults receive orthodontic treatment each year. There are special considerations for adults such as periodontal disease and missing teeth that children usually do not have. Therefore, you will need good communication with your general dentist and orthodontist to make sure all aspects of your oral health are being addressed. How often do I have to come in for orthodontic adjustments? The length of time between braces adjustments for my patients is typically every 6-8 weeks. It is important to understand that the length of time between your orthodontic adjustments does not correspond with how fast your teeth are moving. Modern braces use wires that are a mixture of metals (alloys) originally designed by NASA for outer space. This combination of metals allows the wire to apply gentle forces for a long period of time. Unlike older stainless steel wires that typically had to be adjusted every month, modern alloy wires can be effective for serveral months. n Super Smiles Coral Springs is conveniently located on N. Making the Grade: While Other Schools Struggle with Online Learning, Margate Elementary School Excels BY: JOHN DUKA
W
hen the pandemic hit earlier this year, many schools, particularly those serving high percentages of Black, Latino, and Indigenous students, as well as children from underserved households, experienced declines in performance. But Margate Elementary, led by Principal Thomas Schroeder and his excellent faculty, coun-
tered that trend. Margate Elementary, a Title 1 school in the Broward County Public Schools district, was one of a select group of schools in low-income areas (198 out of 2,210) that experienced no declines in student success during the spring of 2020, according to a research brief by Curriculum Associates. The remarkable finding is supported by data from Curriculum Associates’ i-Ready system, which Margate Elementary uses for online lessons and assessments. The system is used by 25 percent of U.S. students. In this small but mighty cohort of 198 schools, on average 88 percent of students were connected, and they completed an average of 34 lessons in about eight weeks of instruction. The average lesson passing rate was 81 percent. None of the schools had a passing rate lower than 70 percent. The numbers were consistent with those before the pandemic hit. In describing how Margate

Elementary achieved its success, Principal Thomas Schroeder noted that human connection was a major driver in maintaining student performance. He added that the school ensured that all students had computers, internet access, a variety of instructional supports, and, most importantly, daily interactions with teachers. Also, having used the i-Ready system before the pandemic, students were comfortable with online learning. “Maintaining close contact with our students kept them engaged and monitoring their progress in the i-Ready system enabled teachers to help students quickly and efficiently,” Principal Schroeder said. “Recognizing progress on their lessons that included schoolwide celebrations such as ice cream socials provided further motivation.” While ensuring that all students can connect, engage, and continue to learn is difficult these days, it is not insurmountable. Margate Elementary proves that all students can succeed — and even thrive — during this national crisis. Margate Elementary School is part of Broward County Public Schools. It serves more than 1,000 children from a variety of walks of life. To learn more about the school visit www.browardschools.com/margateelem

The Simon School Offers Parents a New Choice in Arts & Sciences Education
T
he Simon School of Arts & Sciences opened its doors to students for the first time this year. The Parkland-based micro-school was founded by long-term teacher Carolina Simon. After working at a number of public & private schools, Simon realized there is a better way to help high school students learn. The Simon School is part of a wave of new education options that are sweeping across the country called micro-schools. These small, student-focused schools enable students to work collaboratively in groups with a variety of ages and ability levels allowing students to naturally develop leadership skills as they learn. We sat down with Simon to learn more. What is The Simon School? We offer a classical education (philosophy, Judeo-Christian theology, Humanities, and foundational sciences) for the 21st century. Our curriculum is centered on project-based learning with lessons that are measured in the use of knowledge, not just the regurgitation of it. What led you to open the school? I genuinely care about the individual child. My goal is to help all my students become confident, well-rounded, positive, productive young adults who love and respect themselves, their neighbor, and their country.
Tell us more about Micro-schools? Micro-schools are essentially the “one-room schoolhouse” of the 21st century. They are teacher run “tiny” schools with 15-150 students and are 100% student-centered with a focus on projectbased learning. Students are not divided by age and work in collaborative groups, with a variety of ages and ability levels. This allows students to naturally develop their leadership skills. Micro-schools have been around for about a decade and offer a greater partnership to parents. Whereas, in public schools or large private schools parents are generally confined to the PTO or sports booster, in micro-schools parents are able to volunteer as any number of services they see a need for. Micro-schools are true partnerships between the school (the teacher/owner) and the parents. This helps create a true community for the students that is beyond learning math or grammar. What are Fun Friday? Fun Fridays are experiential learning opportunities. Each Friday we have an enrichment activity, a guest speaker, a field trip, or a community service project connected to something we have been learning or will learn about the following week. It is a great way to bring school subjects to life, build community among students, and
welcome the weekend. Fun Fridays let students have a little fun while also expanding their horizons and rounding off any rough edges. Why should parents consider The Simon School? We choose to be small so that we can focus on each child equally. We educate the whole child and provide them with an education that will allow them to forevermore be the leader in the room. I have been teaching for 20 years, as a middle school teacher, college professor, & high school teacher - most recently at Stoneman Douglas. I have been recognized for my teaching efforts almost every year, and have worked with “gifted” students as well as those that struggle. Regardless of the label placed on the student, they always shine in my class because I see them as individuals that deserve to be empowered in their learning process. For more info contact the Simon School at admissions.simonschool@gmail.com or call 954-546-4304.

Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition, “100 Faces of War” Comes to Coral Springs
T
he American military in the 21st century is diverse and reflects the complexities of the country and the current times. “100 Faces of War,” a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian, presents the stories of those who served the U.S. in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The exhibition is on view at the Coral Springs Museum of Art through the end of December. Through the eyes of soldiers and citizens who participated in the Iraq and Afghanistan theaters, 100 Faces of War gives voice to the one percent of Americans that volunteer to defend the 99 percent. Featuring 100 portraits of Americans from every state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, the subjects represent a cross-section of those who served, and reflect a variety of military branches, job descriptions, and personal backgrounds. Each oil painting is coupled with a personal statement from the participant to create the portrait. In 2005, Massachusetts artist Matt Mitchell felt disconnected from recent war conflicts, had no connection to the military, and knew no one who served. Deeply inspired and moved by an article in a local newspaper about an Iraq veteran, Jeffrey Lucey, coming home, Mitchell decided to learn more
about the American experience of war in Iraq and Afghanistan. He contacted the veteran’s parents, and Jeffrey Lucey became the first individual he painted for 100 Faces of War. Lucey’s portrait, along with portraits of 99 others who served, are featured in the exhibition. The portraits pay homage to these individuals, visually conveying the impact of their war experience either as civilian support staff or member of the military. Each person met with Mitchell, and was asked to say something about himself or herself. What they wear in their portrait is of their choosing, and they could say whatever they wanted. The statement they provided, and the information in their biography, represent that particular moment in their personal history. Ten posthumous portraits are included in the 100 Faces project. For these portraits, the families provided the words that accompany the paintings. Each unedited statement—ranging from humorous to dramatic, from lighthearted to poignant—candidly reveal the truth of war’s lasting effects. 100 Faces of War recognizes those who serve in our military and acknowledges the incredibly complex and varied American experiences of these wars.

riting this, my final column as Mayor of Parkland, is bittersweet. Serving you, the residents of Parkland, as your Mayor, has been the honor of a lifetime. My journey to serve our community has always been one that I had been passionate about but never planned. Back in 2012, our then District 2 Commissioner Jared Moskowitz decided to run for State Rep. I had been active in our community serving our Education Advisory Board for 7 years and covering the City Commission for almost 10 years. When this opportunity presented itself, so many friends and neighbors thought I was the best choice and encouraged me to run for the seat. While I had been continually active in the community, and followed the city government very closely, I had never in my life planned or anticipated running for office. With the encouragement of my family, I decided to enter the race… to step into the arena. I remember thinking I would have the opportunity to be an example of the kind of elected official I always wanted my boys to see. A sense of panic overcame me that night as I thought to myself, what have I done…what now… Now, when I look back almost 8 years later I could never have anticipated the experiences I had, the lessons I learned, the pain I witnessed, the challenges I faced, in addition to the hope I was given, the care and compassion I saw, the joy I experienced and the wonderful people I met in our community. I am proud of what we have accomplished from fighting against school boundaries that would have excluded students from attending our neighborhood schools to effectively advocating for additional elementary school capacity. With your support we secured land for future city needs and limited that development. We approved building fire stations, expanding the library and Pine Trails Park, making improvements to infrastructure, many city amenities and so much more; it has been a busy 7+ years. We have also had our share of crises, from the flooding in June 2017, Hurricane Irma in September 2017, the current pandemic and the devastating and horrific mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Throughout it all, our community has demonstrated what it means to show up for one another. While there is division on social media, out in the real community, on the ground, there is so much care and compassion. We had neighbors helping neighbors during the hurricane and in its aftermath and so many who reached out to help the Florida Keys that were devastated during Hurricane Irma. We had multiple residents doing collections to help the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian. After the horrific shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, our community stood up for one another, helping families, teachers and students. While our community changed forever that day, the heart of who we are did not. Even in the current pandemic, we had residents making masks for first responders and supplying food to those in need. We do have an incredible and resilient community, which is what makes our city such a special place to live. Congratulations to our new City Commission and your willingness to serve. I wish you much success as you continue the work of keeping Parkland the wonderful community it is and the place we all call home. Thank you for the honor of allowing me to serve as your Mayor. I look forward to continuing my service to the residents of Parkland as the State Representative for District 96. And as always, please stay in touch and reach out to me with any questions you may have. You can also find me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I look forward to being your voice in our State Legislature.
MESSAGE FROM THE CORAL SPRINGS COMMISSION
November Commission Message
THE CITY OF CORAL SPRINGS COMMISSION he year 2020 is almost over – and what a challenging year it has been! The COVID-19 pandemic changed the way we live, work, and attend school. It caused many of us to restructure our traditional office work environments, created a greater dependency on digital platforms, and altered the way we do even the easiest of activities, like shop for groceries. Perhaps most importantly, it taught us to value, appreciate and be grateful for the simple things in life – our health and our family. November is a month of gratitude and as your elected officials, we are tremendously thankful to serve the residents of the City of Coral Springs. Our residents have demonstrated that in difficult times, we are capable of uniting and raising each other up. Our residents have been resilient, understanding and supportive and this Thanksgiving, we are beyond grateful to serve you, each and every day. While this year has been challenging, let us be grateful. And as we approach the holiday season, be mindful of the importance of our health, safety and wellbeing. Another change on the horizon will be a result of our upcoming elections. It will not only shape our nation, but also our City Commission. On November 3, 2020 citizens across the country will vote in the General Election and for Coral Springs Commission Seat 3 and Seat 5. We encourage all residents to exercise their right to vote and remind them to refer to their voting registration for polling locations, which can be found by visiting https://www.browardsoe.org. In honor of our military heroes, their sacrifices and service, on November 11 we will host a virtual Veterans Days commemoration along with the launch of a new Veterans Recognition program. Each month, during a City Commission meeting, City Officials will recognize a resident who served in our nation’s armed forces. We encourage our residents and business leaders to submit a Coral Springs Veteran for recognition, by filling out the form located on our website. For more information on the program, please call 954-344-1004. For more information on our virtual Veterans Day commemoration, please visit our website www.coralsprings.org/events. The Coral Springs Police Department, in partnership with SafeGuard Document Destruction, will host a free touchless Shred-a-thon event for city residents at the Sportsplex (2575 Sportsplex Drive) on November 14 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled for a later date. For more information, call 954-344-1833 or visit www.coralsprings.org/events. The Coral Springs Museum of Art is featuring the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit “100 Faces of War,” an exhibit that presents the stories of those who served the U.S. in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. On Mondays through Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., those interested in visiting the exhibit can reserve 90-minute sessions, with free admission for groups of no more than six combined adults and children. The museum is taking health and safety precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Reservations are required and can be found at www.coralspringsmuseum.org You can stay informed and up to date by visiting www.coralsprings.org, following our city social media accounts and through text message, by texting the keyword CORALSPRINGS to 888-777. Our November Commission Meetings will take place virtually on Wednesday, the 4th at 6:30 p.m., and Wednesday, the 18th at 6:30 p.m.; residents are invited to watch and offer public comment by calling 954-344-5900. Meetings are aired on CityTV, Blue Stream Channels 25, 25.2, 725 and on AT&T U-Verse channel 99. Meetings are also live streamed at coralsprings.org/citytv. As always, if you would like to schedule an appointment with any of your City Officials, please call 954- 344- 5911.

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Planning for Incapacity: Vital Legal Documents Everyone Should Have BY MICHAEL FELDMAN uppose tomorrow you were injured in an accident, became terribly ill and unable to make decisions about your medical care, finances, or legal affairs. Who would make those decisions for you? You may be thinking, “I’m married. My spouse could handle all of that.” Or, “If something happens to me my parents or significant other will step in.” Unfortunately, the sad reality is that if you don’t make clear designations in advance, those closest to you may not have legal authority to carry out your wishes. That’s one reason why every adult (ie., someone over 18 years of age) should have a set of basic documents called “advance directives.” Without them, a guardianship proceeding must often be initiated, and a judge will decide who has legal authority to make decisions for you. Guardianships are very costly, time-consuming, and stressful for your loved ones. Worse, they can lead to inter-family disagreements, or bitter and expensive litigation over who will be appointed as your guardian (as in the 2005 Terry Schiavo case). There are a number of advance directives that every adult should have in place: 1. Designation of Healthcare Surrogate (sometimes called a Healthcare Power of Attorney) State law specifies who medical providers can look to if a patient cannot communicate their wishes (usually a spouse, then adult children, then parents, then siblings, etc.). But what if those “in line” to make decisions for you are not available when needed? Suppose, for example, both you and your spouse are in a car accident together and cannot make decisions for the other. Or, suppose your parents or children are away and unreachable in an emergency. And what if the person(s) designated by statute are not who you would want to make decisions for you? After all, even close family members and spouses can hold very different opinions about medical care and end-of-life decisions. These scenarios, while seemingly rare, occur all-to-frequently. 2. Living Will A living will expresses your desires about end-of-life decisions should you be terminally ill, such as the use of feeding tubes and the issuance of a “do not-resuscitate” order. Of course, a living will can also be used to direct the affirmative measures you wish taken to prolong your life. 3. Durable Power of Attorney (DPOA) DPOAs deal with legal and financial affairs. Unlike with medical decision-making, state law grants no authority to your spouse or family to access your bank account, investments, safe-deposit box, or any other financial asset, unless they have been added to the account or designated as an authorized user in advance. Without a DPOA, a guardianship proceeding must be initiated in court and a judge will then determine who manages your finances. 4. Other Advance Directives A number of other types of advance directives may be appropriate in certain circumstances. This includes HIPAA Authorizations, Social Security designation of representative payee directives, and others. We routinely work with our clients to ensure they are equipped with the types of directives most appropriate for their needs. Most all of these documents may also be customized to meet your wishes and specific circumstances. You should consult an estate planning, elder care, or special needs attorney to draft the proper language for each document. We may not like to think about these uncomfortable “what-ifs,” but it is far better to plan ahead than to face illness, injury, or infirmity without having these documents in place.

In some cases, lines extended around the block as voters took advantage of the start of early voting. All indications suggest a record turn-out for this year’s general election. Voters supporting President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee and former Vice President Joe Biden stood in line wearing raincoats and holding umbrellas. The early voting comes on top of a record number of vote-by-mail requests. More than 2.5 million mail-in ballots were requested in Florida prior to early voting polls even opening. In the 2016 presidential election, 9.5 million Floridians cast their vote, including 816,000 Broward County residents. Experts expect those numbers to be significantly eclipsed in this year’s race. According to the Broward Supervisor of Elections, more than 300,000 Broward votes were cast by the end of the first day of early voting. The increase in vote-by-mail activity is expected to offset delays caused by COVID-19 safety precautions. The vast majority of voters respected requests to wear masks and to anticipate delays while voting
