publisher’s page Teach Your Children Well We can all breathe a sigh of relief - FCATs are over! While this standardized test seems to be the focus of the curriculum in our schools throughout much of the year, don’t despair! Teachers in Weston schools are busy engaging students in and out of the classroom. Eagle Point Elementary celebrated the love of reading with its annual Dr. Seuss Night in conjunction with Read Across America program. After winning the regional competition, the Science Bowl Team at Falcon Cove Middle is going to Washington D.C. for the National Science Bowl competition. The Sagemont School’s Odyssey of the Mind team won at regional competition and will be competing this month at the state competition at the University of Central Florida. And a group of National Honor Society students from Cypress Bay High did the unthinkable - cutting their long hair and donating their tresses to Locks of Love. Read these wonderful stories in this issue and you’ll realize that our kids are learning a lot more than just FCAT workbook material. It may be celebrated just once each year, but it’s not impossible to make everyday Earth Day. In our Dining Out article find out how Pizza Fusion has done just that, making it the most eco-friendly restaurant in America. The food is exceptional, too! Love Your Mother Earth! Eric L. School News Eagle Point Elementary Celebrates Dr. Seuss Night By Stacey Bomser

I

t was standing room only as Eagle Point Elementary School students, families and faculty crowded into the school cafeteria to celebrate the beloved Dr. Seuss’ birthday. The annual event always draws a big crowd, and this year was no exception. Media Specialist Sharon Handler estimates 500 people attended Dr. Seuss Night. “Celebrating an American icon such as Dr. Seuss is a great way to show the impact books have on children, and how that impact lasts into adulthood.” Children of all ages enjoyed the Shamoun family’s wonderful performance. It’s become a tradition for the third and fifth grade teachers, along with their young daughters, to entertain the audience with their rendition of a classic Dr. Seuss story. This year they performed “Green Eggs and Ham.”

One of the highlights of Dr. Seuss Night was the performance of “Green Eggs and Ham” by teachers Mr. and Mrs. Shamoun.

Eagle Point Elementary fourth graders Sydnie Winder (left), Camryn Handler, and Alyssa Salbe enjoy the Dr. Seuss Night festivities.

Mrs. Handler and Assistant Principal Rosado read “The Cat in the Hat.” Students recited the Readers’ Oath, which was signed by all the children in the school. The evening concluded with singing Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss and eating birthday cake. This was the 13th year that Eagle Point Elementary hosted a special reading celebration. “When we have events like this one, reading becomes a family affair,” explains Mrs. Handler, who coordinated Dr. Seuss Night. “We want kids and parents to read together, and to share that love of reading! When a child enjoys reading, they will read more and learn more.” Mrs. Handler says it is important for both students and parents to set aside time to read. “Children need to see their parents setting an example, modeling reading. If they see their parents reading, they will know that it really is something that stays with them forever.” Eagle Point Elementary is not the only school to celebrate Dr. Seuss Night. Every year, around the time of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, schools across the country host events designed to pay homage to the popular children’s book author and get children excited about reading. It is all part of the National Education Association’s “Read Across America” program designed to promote reading motivation and awareness.

School News Falcon Cove to Compete at National Science Bowl By Stacey Bomser

C

ongratulations and good luck to the Science Bowl Team at Falcon Cove Middle School. In its inaugural year, the team won the regional competition and will now represent the Florida-Georgia Region at the National Science Bowl. The team will compete against 36 middle school teams from across the nation at the event which takes place April 29-May 4 in Washington D.C. The National Science Bowl, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, tests students’ science knowledge in a fast-paced question-and-answer format similar to the television show Jeopardy. The middle school question categories are life sciences, physical sciences, earth sciences, mathematics and general science. There is also a solar car competition. There is also a National Science Bowl for high school students. In fact, that is what inspired the Falcon Cove team. “Student Steve Segall was interested in a middle school team since his brother competed on the team at Cypress Bay,” explains Falcon Cove Science Department Head Dr. Merilyn Blair-Johnson, who also serves as team coach. “Since we want to enhance our students’ motivation to engage in science and math activities, we thought as a department that this would be a great idea.” Segall now serves as Team Captain. Kevin Cai, Albert Ho, Kevin Kang and Dillon Perez are the other members of the Falcon Cove Science Bowl Team. Since winning the regional title in February, the team has committed countless hours to studying and practicing. Learning so much about science was not an easy task. Dr. Johnson says the students have been reading higher level textbooks to increase their background knowledge which they put to the test during practice. In addition to its weekly meetings, the team plays the game daily through email and has held practice competitions against the Cypress Bay team. Despite all the hard work, the students are having a great time and are looking forward to representing their school and region. “All of the competition seemed like a long, triumphant journey. Representing our whole state is a dream come true,” states 8th grader Kevin Kang. Teammate Dillon Perez says he has learned a lot from this experience. “Of course, I learned numerous answers to the questions we were being asked, but I also learned

how to be confident in what I knew and how to fight for nationals.” He warns the competition: “Watch out for Falcon Cove in Washington D.C.!” In addition to participating in the National Science Bowl competition, the Falcon Cove team will also take part in scientific activities, seminars and sightseeing while in our nation’s capital. If the team advances to the elimination rounds it will earn a monetary prize for the school. Good luck team!

school news Sagemont Students Seek Invention Inspiration from Computers By Stacey Bomser

T

he Sagemont School takes great pride in its reputation for being technologically advanced. Technology is infused throughout the curriculum, with even the youngest students learning computer skills. At the Upper School, laptop computers are an integral part of the learning experience. Students in grades six through twelve use laptops daily, both in class and on campus, to connect to the school’s state-of-the-art wireless network. This promotes “anywhere, anytime learning.” Lower school students use computers for hands-on learning. But, they’re not just working on computers, they’re working with computers. Third through fifth grade students are dissecting computers and using the parts to create unique inventions, as part of a trimester theme on Inventions and Inventors. The inspiration for this hands-on lesson was a comical comment Media and Technology Specialist Doris Quintero overheard when she was a kindergarten teacher. “One of my students while practicing letter sounds using the computer, stopped working, knocked on the computer and asked, ‘who is in there?’ After that incident, I created a unit on machines and how they work.” In light of the invention theme, she decided to reprise the unit and concentrate on computers. Her goal is for students to gain an understanding of everyday inventions with respect to how they function, what makes up the machine and to appreciate the

wire cutters and screwdrivers, the students started by disassembling old computers. “I never knew such a small part could power so much, like a brain,” noted fifth grader Karl Ackermann after discovering the hard drive inside his computer. Upon removing the cover of a computer, third grade Alexandra Kreitenstein exclaimed, “It looks like a little town from up high.” She later learned the part she was referring to as a town was actually the motherboard. The students also disassembled other machines to find similarities in parts and create a mock invention of their own. In addition, after dissecting the computers, the students used functioning computers to research information on the history of computers, names of parts, who invented or patented the parts, and why certain elements are necessary for the computer to function. Armed with their newfound knowledge, the students will answer the big question: What would the world be like if the computer was not invented? A question that is sure to provoke some interesting answers, considering these children have grown up with computers. In 2000, the year many of them were born, over 60% of all American households owned a personal computer. Today, that number is close to 80%, with most homes having more than one computer.

community news Two Weston Residents Recognized at International Women’s Day Celebration By Stacey Bomser

C

elebrated all over the world, International Women’s Day recognizes and honors women’s contributions to society. Two Weston women with a strong commitment to community service were among the honorees at this year’s International Women’s Day event. About 125 people attended the program presented by the Weston Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the Women’s Professional Staff Association of Cleveland Clinic Florida. This was the second year the two organizations worked together to present the International Women’s Day celebration. According to Dr. Kamala Anandam, president of the Weston Branch AAUW, it was a natural partnership. “Cleveland Clinic’s Women’s Professional Staff Association believes, just as AAUW does, in women’s rights and in recognizing women’s contributions to society world wide.” So, it was only befitting that this year the event recognized women and organizations doing work both here at home and globally. The Community Service Star Award was presented to three very deserving women. Weston’s Ruth Jacobsen and Bernice Rubin were recognized for their commitment to empowering women and children in Broward County, while Patti Bookout van Tonder was recognized for her humanitarian work in Mozambique, Africa. Ruth Jacobsen received the Community Service Star Award in recognition of a “Conversational English” class she created to help Latino women learn the English language. She has also played an active and elected role in League of Women Voters, Broward County Commission on Status of Women, Broward County Women’s History Coalition and Women’s ORT. Bernice Rubin was recognized for her community service work with children. She has volunteered for the “Listen to Children” and “I am Thumbody” programs, both under the auspices of the Broward County Mental Health Department. Rubin has also volunteered for Jacobsen’s “Conversational English” program. The Community Service Star Award was also presented to Patti Bookout van Tonder, founder of Build on Hope, rooted in the African nation of Mozambique. and the elderly, teaches African communities to be self-sufficient, and promotes wildlife conservation. In addition, three organizations were presented with the Service of Distinction Award. Each received a plaque and $100 check. Women of Tomorrow was recognized for its Mentor and Scholarship Programs for at-risk high school girls. Founder and President Jennifer Valoppi was on hand to accept the award. The Broward International Women’s Club was recognized for its work raising money to provide scholarships to girls from other countries wishing to pursue a college education in the United States. Dr. Maria L. Diaz of the Cleveland Clinic Florida accepted the Service of Distinction Award on behalf of the International Cervical Cancer Association. This group of medical professionals volunteers its services to prevent cervical cancer in developing countries, especially in Peru. Dr. Diaz is Founder of this organization and currently serves on the Board. The Keynote Speaker was Florida Senator Nan Rich, of Weston. She spoke of the lack of women in state and national politics and emphasized the need to encourage and train young women to enter politics. The International Women’s Day event is just one of many programs presented by the Weston Branch of the AAUW. For over 125 years, the AAUW has been committed to promoting equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. “AAUW believes in lighting a candle rather than curse the darkness,” shares Dr. Anandam. “It has lighted many candles in the past and will continue to do so until equity is achieved for women and girls.” To learn more about the Weston Branch of the American Association of University Women and its programs, visit www.aauwwestonbranch.org.

ongratulations to Melissa Klassman. The senior at David Posnack Hebrew Day School was one of two winners from Florida to receive the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. This prestigious award is given to students for excellence in academics, athletics and community and school leadership. She certainly possesses all of those traits. Melissa is an honor roll student. She has been Key Club President, Academic Editor of the school yearbook and Student Body President. And, she is also a talented athlete. “Melissa is a hard worker who will never miss a practice or game and she is a team leader,” says Keith Krasiejko, assistant athletic director. “She has played every sport and lettered in cross country, basketball, soccer, volleyball, softball and tennis.” Her numerous athletic awards include “Most Valuable Athlete,” “All County” in basketball and soccer, and “All County Second Team” in soccer. In her spare time, Melissa has volunteered at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and worked as a summer camp counselor. Geri Stief, Posnack High School Principal and interim Head of School, was not surprised Melissa was recognized for this award. “Melissa is goal oriented and a great team player. She is a competitor with an inner drive and the ability to lead a team forward and she is a role model for other students.” Melissa says she was totally shocked to learn she won the award and is honored to represent her school. “I am proud to be another student from David Posnack to win this award and the first girl from Broward County,” notes Melissa. Two years ago, Solomon Braun, also from Weston, was one of the twelve National Finalists for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. “What is extraordinary is that a small school like Posnack with only 140 students would have its second Wendy’s Heisman Award winner,” states Guidance Counselor Janet Ronkin. The David Posnack Hebrew Day School has had three state finalists, besides Melissa, in the last seven years. Melissa Klassman is a star on and off the field. community news City Honors Retiring Fire Chief John Frailey By Stacey Bomser

W

eston’s new Fire Chief, Harris Bouchillon, has big shoes to fill. He replaces retiring Fire Chief John Frailey, who held the post since July 2007. Chief Frailey was honored at a recent Weston City Commission meeting for his dedicated service to the Weston community. “Protecting Weston’s 62,000 residents, its 10 public schools in addition to private and religious schools, over 8 million square feet of commercial structures, and a 150 bed acute care hospital is a very large responsibility,” stated City Manager John R. Flint. “Chief Frailey fulfilled that responsibility with the greatest of expertise, professionalism and compassion.” As Fire Chief, Frailey oversaw three stations consisting of three Advanced Life Support (ALS) engine companies, one ALS aerial company, four EMS rescue/ transport units, a Fire Prevention Bureau, and numerous community fire prevention and safety programs. According to Flint, “Chief Frailey’s 30 years of experience and his leadership has enabled Weston’s Fire Rescue services to become a model among its peers.” During his tenure, Chief Frailey was responsible for the City’s acquisition of ten state-of-the-art fire and EMS trucks, the implementation of the latest medical protocols, obtaining an ISO Class 2 rating, and achieving a 100% fire inspection of all multi-family and commercial buildings.

The City of Weston presented retiring Fire Chief John Frailey with a plaque commemorating his service to the community. At the ceremony were: Commissioner Angel Gomez (left), Commissioner Daniel Stermer, Fire Chief John Frailey, Mayor Eric Hersh, daughter Cristina Frailey, wife BSO Battalion Chief Julie Frailey, son Michael Frailey, Commissioner Mercedes Henriksson and Commissioner Murray Chermak.

The Broward County Bike Collective was one of the first to mobilize. Under the leadership of Ryan Feller, a junior at Cypress Bay High School, the group has already raised hundreds of dollars. Feller started the Collective about a year ago. “Some friends of mine needed a bike as a means of transportation but couldn’t afford one, and at the same time, many people had unused bikes taking up space in the garage,” he explains. “It was a way to connect those who had bikes to donate and those who needed one.” Today, the not-for-profit group collects unused or broken bicycles, refurbishes them, and puts them to good use in the community. Some of the bicycles are given to those who need them as a means of transportation, but can’t afford to purchase one. “Most of our bikes are sold locally via Craigslist, with all profits currently going to the American Red Cross for earthquake relief in Haiti,” says Feller, who says the Collective would like to support other organizations and relief efforts, but right now its emphasis is on Haiti. “Haiti was the poorest country in the Western hemisphere even before the earthquake, and is very much in need of support to rebuild their homes and cities and to improve their general condition.” The Broward County Bike Collective has raised about $400 to date and has repaired over twenty bicycles. All of the repairs are done by Feller and Collective volunteers, the majority of which are high school or Broward College students. “We all do repairs,” shares Feller, who tries to teach the other volunteers. “I learned mostly through repair guides and video walkthroughs.” He says his friend Alex Levine, a Cypress Bay senior who interned at Z’s Bikes, has also been instrumental. “Alex has helped out and taught me quite a bit over the past few months. Rafael, a mechanic at Alex’s Pro Bike Shop, also helps out with repairs from time to time.” These bike shops have both been supportive of the Broward County Bike Collective. “Z’s gives us salvageable used tires that they’d otherwise throw away. And Rafael collects salvageable parts from his shop,” notes Feller. The Weston community can support the Collective’s efforts. “We are always in need of more bikes,” states Feller. “We accept bikes in any size, age or condition, as well as wheels, spare parts, accessories and any kind of tools.” If you would like to make a donation or become a volunteer, contact Ryan Feller at freebikes@gmx.com. You can learn more about the Broward County Bike Collective and see pictures of some of the bicycles they have repaired at www. freebikes.webs.com. Spinning their wheels... just some of the bicycles that The Broward County Bike Collective has refurbished and either sold locally or donated to those in need of transportation. Ryan Feller started the Collective about a year ago and with the assistance of volunteers, has repaired over 20 bicycles, raising about $400 which he has donated to the American Red Cross Haiti relief.

COVER STORY Marissa Zoldan TAG USA Gymnastics Charitable Foundation Poised for Greatness By Stacey Bomser

M

arissa Zoldan goes through life with the same passion, grace and agility she expressed as an Elite gymnast. Although no longer performing on the balance beam, Zoldan still performs a delicate balancing act every day. The hands-on mother of seven, plus one stepdaughter, volunteers at her children’s school, runs TAG USA Gymnastics with her husband Michael, and still finds time to devote to various charities. Zoldan feels fortunate to have been blessed with a beautiful family and successful business, but life was not always so picture-perfect. Three years ago, her life was turned What is your mission? To reach out to help as many people as possible. I want to help people’s lives and make a difference when someone faces a devastating diagnosis or financial hardship. Which causes do you support? Our family is dedicated to supporting organizations that work to find cures for women’s and children’s cancers and also charities that provide assistance to the needy and homeless in our community. Why are these causes important to you? I think everyone falls on hard times, either through health issues or job loss, especially in these times. We all have to do what we can to help and support each other. What motivated you to actually create the Foundation? Coming through the struggles I faced in my own life, I knew the right thing to do was to help others. Our family has the opportunity and motivation to help others in our communities.

upside down when she received the devastating diagnosis that she had cancer. Caught early and treated, Zoldan is now cancer-free but she knows first-hand not everyone is so lucky. She lost her own mother to cancer at the age of 43. Seeing her single mother struggle, Marissa became very in touch and in tune with people facing hardships. These experiences left a lasting impression on her. Determined to make a difference, she created a non-profit foundation to support the causes near and dear to her heart. Our City Weston had the opportunity to speak to her about the Marissa Zoldan TAG USA Gymnastics Charitable Foundation. What is your goal for the Foundation? We will partner with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, HELP USA and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Ideally, these organizations would use our funds to accomplish their projects. How does TAG USA Gymnastics fit into this? Through the growth of the gym we have a pulpit to communicate ways to help those in need. TAG USA has grown so much in the year that we have owned the gym. Our team successes have brought national recognition in athletics. We are considered the number one gym in South Florida. We are reaching more people than would otherwise be possible. Are your gymnastics students involved? Our students and their families have been extremely supportive. Members of our Team helped build a Habitat for Humanity house in Miami, even the youngest athletes helped with the construction and landscaping. We have also conducted food drives to benefit the WECARE Food Pantry, gifts for JAFCO, and scholarships for children. Why do you think it’s important for children to be involved in charitable work? Michael and I teach our children that charitable deeds are important. There are children in our community who go to bed hungry each night and single mothers fighting cancer and worrying about how they are going to care for their kids while going through treatment. I want my children to know that we all need to help in whatever way we can. We all need to do our part. Does the Foundation have any big projects planned? We are planning a major Broward community event for December 2010. The event will be open to the entire community and hope that with all our involvement, we make it a success. What else can the Weston community do to support the Marissa Zoldan TAG USA Gymnastics Charitable Foundation? We welcome donations of time, services and financial contributions. I invite anybody who wants to participate to contact me. You can reach me here at the gym at (954) 384-9393.

Haute Hair Seasons Change - So Should Your Hair! Change is in the air…Change your hair, change your life! Change is good! By Helen Charles

I

t is time to shake up your style for the coming season and do not be afraid to experiment with color, texture and shape to create a truly individual look for the spring. We change our clothes seasonally, why do we not see the need to do the same with our hair? Each season should inspire you to tweak something as little as a fringe alteration or as major as color restoration. Let us look at the subtle or drastic changes available in the hair department for different seasons.

Cut Me Mid-length…for Spring!

After the winter season, where colors are cooler and lengths are shorter, it is time to consider in which manner you will change your look. This is the season we need to

look for day time. When it comes to evening, maximum glamour can be achieved by drying hair with a large round brush to add lift and shine. If you are growing your hair but it does not look its best once it reaches the shoulders, try giving it a helping hand with extensions. Adding extensions, when applied correctly, will encourage hair growth, as extra weight of the extensions will stimulate the erector pili muscle which surrounds the hair bulb. Addition of 50 human hair extensions, which cost around $300, will help you cheat your way to transform your hair to flirtatious lengths. Colors for Summer should be vibrant and well maintained with good quality serums (such as Goldwell’s Color IQ serum) and wide choices of tones in warm vanilla, punchy tangerines and sizzling golds can be added to the existing colors in your hair.

Cut Me Mid-length…for Fall!

Preparing for the fall styles should be in the way of maintenance. Whether you need cleaning up the dead ends by taking off a few inches or refreshing colors by deepening the tones, there is no better place than the world’s runways to be inspired. This is the season deep conditioning treatments in salons are most in demand. This is also the season when a professional color cleanse procedure would ensure that the past seasons tones are cleaned up, leaving the hair ready for new tones. Color for Fall should become deeper and richer. Hot chocolate and warm caramels are useful to enrich the faded summer colors.

Cut Me Short…for Winter!

consider growing hair to mid-lengths. The 2010 midi should be glamorous, think lots of gloss and volume. As you start growing your hair for the new season, try texture, curls, waves and flicky finish. Make sure to have regular trims with intension of growing the length, otherwise you are in danger of it just looking grown out without a style. Color for Spring should be starting to warm up with honey and mink shades of multi-tonal highlights whether you are blonde or brunette. Invest in a good quality shampoo for grey hair (e.g Rene Furterer okara, silver shampoo) to eliminate brassy and yellow tones in your blonde. Redheads should also concentrate on application of vibrant ruby and rich russet glosses to put you on course for a truly shimmering summer color.

Cut Me Long…for Summer!

Long hair is so versatile! By committing to regular trims and deep conditioning treatments and good homecare products, longer lengths should be achievable for most of us. Seeking expert advice for growing healthy hair is very important. By adding a few long layers to already long hair, will help to achieve more relaxed and tousled

50 April 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com

Short hair is ideal for winter months and can be very versatile. You can wear it slick with lots of product or softly textured for a sweet feminine feel. For a night out a little back brushing on the crown for height would give you a more formal look. If you are nervous about going from long to short, try cutting a flirtatious fringe to frame your face. Color for winter should be cooler colors. If you are blond, polish up your tones with an icy gloss to remove any trace of the sun damage. If you are a redhead, deepen your color with dimensional dark chocolates and raven cool tones. Brunettes should get help with freshening up with charismatic cocoa or caramel hues. So, this new season let it be a new YOU! How will you be wearing your hair on the beach this summer? Health & Wellness Test Your Sleeping “Spinal Q” By Dr. Browner & Dr. Behar

I

f you are like most people, you look forward to a good night’s sleep. The following TRUE or FALSE statements may provide some food for thought while waiting for the REM zone...

TRUE or FALSE 1. Sleeping with two pillows under your head is better for you than sleeping with one. FALSE: Whether you sleep on your side or on your back, using two pillows under your head will force your spine into an abnormal position. In the short term this abnormal spinal position can cause muscle and ligament soreness, tightness and fatigue. Eventually, chronic spinal problems may result. Sleeping with one pillow is better, and a correctly contoured “cervical” pillow or small cervical roll is best. Contoured pillows or cervical rolls provide optimum support for your neck while sleeping, and help to maintain normal cervical lordosis (spinal curvature in the neck) and spinal alignment. 2. Sleeping on your stomach is one of the least healthy positions in which to sleep. TRUE: Lower back and neck pain are two of the more immediate and obvious signs that “stomach sleeping” is not good for you. For some people, sleeping on their stomach may not produce symptoms for months or years. Unfortunately, when symptoms do start poor sleeping habits are usually well established and spinal problems have become advanced. The preferred position in which to sleep

- in terms of both comfort and spinal health - is the fetal position (on the side with knees and hips bent slightly) with a thin pillow between the knees. This will help maintain the back in neutral position, and minimize early morning low back stiffness. 3. The best position in which to read in bed is to lie on your back with your head propped up high. FALSE: Chiropractic doctors treat many patients with neck and upper back problems that are the direct result of poor postural habits. A common postural mistake involves the habit of lying on one’s back with the head propped up while reading or watching television. This position forces the head and neck into extreme sustained flexion, causing compression of the spinal discs, stretching of the spinal cord and cervical nerves that come out of the cervical spine, and abnormal tension on the posterior neck muscles. In small doses, such stresses are normal and easily accommodated by the body. The problems begin when these positions become habitual or a regular part of one’s routine. Repeated and long-term postural abuse will almost invariably cause chronic soft tissue damage, spinal distortions and accelerated spinal degenerative change. The best position in which to read while in bed is the same as when you are sleeping - lying on one side with the head and neck in a neutral position. Think posture... always! For a consultation or more information you can reach Dr. Browner & Dr. Behar at Windmill Health Center, Weston 954-217-4881. We also have two additional locations to serve you in Pembroke Pines and Plantation, contact our Weston location for more information.

Health & Wellness Stress and Testosterone: Is your testosterone and stress level affecting your self-confidence, mood, fun, and sleep? By Dr. Jean Claude Nerette

A

s we grow older, one would want to believe that we become wiser. Being wiser also means beginning to understand the aging process and the relationship between stress and testosterone. STATE OF MIND  Testosterone is a hormone with a complex relationship to behavior. As the body undergoes stressful events testosterone stores are utilized to influence behavior of maintaining self control, confidence, multi-tasking and level headedness. As stressors accumulate on the body, the testosterone stores diminish. Unfortunately there are times when we cannot do much or control the quantity of stress in our lives and environment. But we can correct the deficiency of testosterone in our bodies safely and effectively. This replacement of testosterone equips are bodies with the necessary tools to restore depleted testosterone levels to better cope with daily stressors in our lives. To maintain your health and confidence, it is crucial that you manage your stress. By keeping your testosterone level in balance, you will feel better, be more confidant, and more in control of your feelings and actions. MOOD SWINGS  Not just a problem for females, men suffer from it too. Irritable male syndrome is a newly recognized condition that is triggered by a sudden drop in testosterone. This condition can affect men of any age when stress causes testosterone levels to plummet. The brain is loaded with receptors for testosterone which results in positive effects on mood, irritability and depression when testosterone is at a therapeutic level. New research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science indicates that people with high testosterone earn higher than average incomes. Want to know why? It is because of the testosterone receptors located in our brain control mood, confidence, multi-

tasking, competitiveness, risk taking, and attitude. WHAT TAKES THE FUN OUT OF LIFE? LACK OF TESTOSTERONE!  Low testosterone destroys sexual desire, weakens and debilitates us, robbing us of the energy and ability to enjoy our lives. Low testosterone is linked to osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, depression, and congestive heart failure. The health and well being of every aging man and women will be dramatically impacted by the lack of testosterone hormone. SLEEP PROBLEMS  Trouble falling or staying asleep is common in men and women affected by stress but compounded by hormonal imbalances and especially a lack of testosterone. There is an association between testosterone levels with overall sleep quality, sleep architecture, and sleep-disordered breathing according to The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. Since we can’t stop the aging process or the quantity of stress in our life, it is important to be wise and have our levels of testosterone tested. Being wise allows us the opportunity to visit with a Physician who specializes in bio-identical hormone replacement and Anti-Aging. Dr. Jean Claude Nerette, D.O. owns and operates Bellissimo Medical Spa & Salon, where they strike the perfect balance between the clinical and the luxurious, providing an allinclusive facility where you can receive salon services, as well as a visit with a Board Certified Physician for all your medical and health care needs. Yoga for Chronic Back PainSeparating Fact from Fiction By Paul Jerard, E-RYT 500

S

o many myths surround Yoga and back pain that Hatha Yoga teachers should inform the public as to what they should realistically expect from a regular practice. Chronic back pain is a very real ailment, while some health professionals hold to the belief that many cases are psychosomatic.

Special 2 Week Trial Course

56 April 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com

There is room for debate here; as many of us know the possibility of psychosomatic pain does exist. One theory is that psychosomatic back pain is a result of repressed emotions. A medical professional may feel the combination of a patient’s personality type, and the lack of physical evidence in an MRI or X-ray, makes this person prone to have psychosomatic back pain. On the other hand, fibromyalgia was misdiagnosed in the past, and many patients were sent home, after being told their pain was “all in their heads.” The wide variety of potential problems with the spine, and the fact that the spinal structure is so complex, make it possible for an expert to miss a visible cause of back pain. It has been said that four out of five Americans will experience back pain at some point in their lives. The reasons are numerous. We have become a “chair sitting” society. At the same time, there are degenerative disc diseases, arthritis, muscular problems, spinal nerve disorders, and herniated discs to be considered. Hatha Yoga cannot solve every problem, but asana practice can assure a student that muscular balance will be restored. Some medical experts are of the opinion that muscle imbalances are the source of most forms of “real” back pain and sciatica. In the case of a muscle imbalance, the stronger muscles will pull in one direction, while the weaker muscles on the opposite side, “give way.” This structural imbalance of the spine, as a result of uneven pressure from opposing muscle groups, causes the bones and joints to become misaligned. To elaborate on this a little further – the spine is at the very center of the physical stress between opposing muscle groups, which cause this structural imbalance. Hatha Yoga offers more to students than asana practice. For instance, pranayama (Yogic breathing) offers a method for establishing a mind/body connection. Some new practitioners do not see the long term value of pranayama. For example: Pranayama, alone, will calm the mind and make a person feel refreshed. For those, who have difficulty in understanding this concept, my suggestion would be to try a supervised pranayama practice, with a competent Yoga teacher, guru, or swami. Within one hour, anyone who is new to the practice of pranayama should become a believer. In addition to pranayama and asana, we also have meditation. Once again, my suggestion would be to seek out a competent Yoga teacher for guidance in meditation. All of the above benefits and techniques should be found within a single class. It may require some searching on the part of the person who is experiencing back pain. Yet, the time spent searching for a competent source of information, is small in comparison to the chronic physical back pain one is experiencing. Copyright 2010 – Paul Jerard / Aura Publications. or the millions of Americans who suffer from digestive diseases, new technologies are improving our ability to see the smallest details of the digestive tract. According to Roger Charles, MD, Chairman of the Department of Gastroenterology at Cleveland Clinic Florida, this offers the promise of a faster and more accurate diagnosis, which can in turn lead to treatment options that are both less invasive and more targeted. Common diseases that affect gastrointestinal health include gallbladder disease, diverticulitis, esophageal reflux disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, pancreatitis and cancers of the stomach, pancreas, colon and rectum. Because symptoms are often similar across many conditions, getting an accurate diagnosis is essential. Dr. Charles explains how technology is helping us get it right. Q: What are some of the latest techniques for viewing the digestive tract? A: Cleveland Clinic is the first and only medical center in Broward and Palm Beach counties to utilize a procedure called double balloon enteroscopy, allowing the entire digestive tract to be visualized in real time, with the option to treat or biopsy any abnormalities right on the spot. Capsule endoscopy, which has the patient swallowing a pill-sized camera, also allows the GI specialist to view the entire small bowel. Endoscopic ultrasound is now used to examine the lining and walls of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract and nearby organs such as the pancreas, liver and gallbladder. Q: Are there new technologies aiding the diagnosis of digestive diseases? A: There are several advanced technologies that are innovating GI diagnosis, though they are not yet widely available. One technology, called the Spyglass™ Direct Visualization System, allows the physician to view all quadrants of a patient’s bile duct, improving gallbladder disease diagnosis. Meanwhile, the Bravo pH Receiver is a new minimally invasive tool for diagnosing gastroesophageal reflux by monitoring the patient’s pH level in the esophagus. Q: How is the right diagnostic technique selected? A: Consultation with a physician who is a specialist in gastrointestinal diseases is the best way for a patient to obtain the right diagnosis and the best treatment. To make an appointment with Dr. Charles and the Department of Gastroenterology at Cleveland Clinic Florida, please call 1.800.639.DOCTOR, or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org for more information.

A higher rate of survival and fewer complications in heart care. Why choose “much like Cleveland Clinic” when you can choose Cleveland Clinic?

Some area hospitals have advanced technology and robust research programs. And, much like Cleveland Clinic, some have even adopted a team approach to surgery. But we know it’s not just about having resources, it’s what you do with them. Independent studies* show that patients at Cleveland Clinic Florida have a higher rate of survival and a lower risk of complications in heart surgery than at other hospitals in the region. That’s the critical difference between “much like” Cleveland Clinic and Cleveland Clinic itself. It’s why we are the best choice for you and the people you love.

Every life deserves world class care.

Health & Wellness The Dream Lens By Dr. Jane Therrien

an you imagine the joy of waking up in the morning and being able to see without the aid of glasses or daily wear contacts? Orthokeratology, the reshaping of one’s cornea with contact lenses to improve vision isn’t new. It has been practiced by some eye doctors for decades. It wasn’t until recently, with technological advancements in the procedure, that it was possible to achieve reduction of myopia in a matter of hours. The flattening of the cornea is effective for both children and adults. Surgery is not an option for children or for those whose vision is changing, nor does it stop the progression of myopia. Orthokeratology is achieved in a unique way. While you sleep, these therapeutic lenses gently change the front curvature of your eye or cornea. The process improves vision rapidly. One very pleased patient wrote “What a great way to improve vision without surgery. I wore my lenses for a week and what a difference it has made in my natural vision and correcting my near-sightedness. I can go all day without the help of glasses or contact lenses.”

During the procedure, the eye is flattened and retains the flattened contour for a period of time, this process is referred to as corneal molding. The mold is a specially designed contact lens. The lens is somewhat larger than a standard lens, but not very different in appearance, and comfort is generally excellent. Orthokeratology is not only an excellent alternative to the wearing of spectacles, but it also frees the individual from the distractions caused by perspiration, dust, wind, weather and temperature. When a patient undergoes lasik, the procedure requires that a flap is cut in the cornea. Regardless of the method used to cut the flap, this process severs nerves that regulate tear flow. This often leads to dry eye syndrome that can be discomforting. Unlike lasik surgery, orthokeratology is completely reversible, so if you decide at a later point that you want to undergo surgery, you can do just that. Why not free yourself from your glasses and contacts the affordable way? For a consultation or more information you can reach Dr. Jane Therrien at Weston Family Eyecare, 4472 Weston Road, Weston 954-888-9393. Dr. Therrien and her staff look forward to exceeding your expectations.

To Forgive or Not to Forgive? By Alina Gastesi-de Armas, MA, MEd, LMHC

F

orgiveness is a gift we give ourselves. For no matter how grave the offense, carrying and living with the anger, rage and resentment of this emotional baggage can be paralyzing. Unfortunately, this philosophical idea, although poetic and peaceful, is very hard to achieve. It is much easier to ruminate on the hurt, plan the retaliation or cut the offender out of your life. What we may not understand is that forgiveness is a process. It takes time and effort. It is not meant to minimize the pain of the hurt that was caused nor to let the other person off the hook for inappropriate or disrespectful behavior. Forgiveness releases you. When you hold resentment toward another, you are bound to that person by a very powerful emotional link. Forgiveness is the only way to dissolve that bond and set yourself free. It releases you to live, love and accept love in return from that person or another.

Myths About Forgiveness

Forgiveness is not forgetting. In true forgiveness, you release the hatred, selfprotection and desire for vengeance, but you keep all of my short- and long-term memories. Through forgiving, you are able to forget “what lies behind” and reach forward to “what lies ahead” (Philippians 3:13), which involves letting go of the pain and being freed from hatred, fear and bitterness. You can remember those painful circumstances in a way that makes room for hope for the future. Forgiveness is not masking hurt. When you’ve been wronged, you hurt. Many individuals are pros at denying hurt and masking it with other more destructive but powerful emotions. Each person is entitled to acknowledge the pain, injustice and unfairness of an offense. Forgiveness cannot occur facing and feeling the anger, hurt and betrayal of the wound. Forgiveness is not necessarily reconciliation. The great thing about forgiveness is that you are free to forgive each and every person who has ever wronged you. The very best part is knowing that your part of forgiveness doesn’t depend on the response

60 April 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com

of the offender. However, reconciliation does depend on the offender. Reconciliation is possible only when the forgiver and the person being forgiven can come to terms about the offense. Forgiveness is not revictimization. Many people are afraid of forgiveness because they think it means they’ll become the victim of the person who has mistreated them. Through forgiveness, it is possible to identify the need for boundary setting. These boundaries are based on decisions we make about our relationship to the offender. Setting boundaries is the first step towards preventing the relationship from being unhealthy and abusive.

What Forgiveness Is

Forgiveness is a process. You can begin the process of forgiveness today, but that doesn’t mean you will instantly feel the freedom of complete forgiveness. For deep offenses, it may take years to experience the full freedom of forgiveness. Committing to the process means admitting that you’re powerless to forgive on your own and that you may have to use meditation, spiritual growth, and sometimes even psychotherapeutic assistance with your efforts. Forgiveness is a decision. The most important contribution you make to the process of forgiveness is patience in yourself and the process. The extraordinary courage it often takes to forgive the person who hurt you will heal you. No one can force you to forgive, and no one can keep you from it either. Forgiveness helps create chemical reactions. True forgiveness brings about a seemingly magical transformation. Whereas you were once burdened, consumed and obsessed, now you are transformed, free and willing. Unresolved hatred and anger have been linked to heart disease and burnout just as “feel good” chemicals in the brain are released once you are free of hate and negativity.

oys interested in improving report card scores may want to take up running and biking. A study of 1.2 million men born between 1950 and 1976 determined a link between cardiovascular fitness and intelligence. Researchers from the Institute of Medicine at The University Of Gothenburg, in Sweden analyzed the physical capacity, brain power and socioeconomic status of men when they reported for military duty at 18. The data which was published in an issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests that men with greater cardiovascular fitness were more likely to be more intelligent and experienced greater success. Interestingly, there was no association between muscular fitness and their intelligence. So conclusion: in order to achieve optimal cognitive function and for development to take place, regular structured cardiovascular fitness is needed. Note - The Kids Ultimate Workout at our studio and the Kids Fitness Program at the new studio that opened in Ft. Lauderdale offer children 7 to 12 years a fantastic cardio and total body training program. Many parents think their children are fit because they play sports. That is incorrect. Your child has sport specific fitness to the sport they take part in. A lesson planned cardio and strength program two times a week is what every child needs. The Truth About Weight Loss Medications - According to the American Dietetic Association, weight loss medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration may be part of a lifestyle-management weight control program. lipase. These work like reading glasses. They work when you are taking them but as soon as you stop (take off the reading glasses) you no longer have the benefit and regain the weight. You must change your lifestyle for long-term success. There are actually some studies currently being done that look at hormones, to see if they can be used as a medication to prevent weight gain and promote weight loss. Note - The Food Coaching Program at Ellen’s Ultimate Studio in Davie deals with the struggle of weight loss very successfully. The two week Quick Start and four week programs are the most popular. These programs assist people by helping them make lifestyle changes. Ellen Latham, MS owner of Ellen’s Ultimate Workout and Pilates Studio, 5173 S. health & wellness My Secrets to Winning the War on Obesity; a National Pandemic By Gabriela Rosenthal

F

eeling tired, hungry, and cranky most of the time is no laughing matter. Many of us do not eat properly which could cause us to have many of these symptoms and more. Have you ever wondered where the saying “It isn’t over until the fat lady sings” came from. What does this mean? Does this mean that obese people sing better than people with a normal body mass index or fat percentage. It is thought to be a reference to opera, so many performances of which seem to end with a set-piece aria by a wellbuilt soprano, but its recent links are mainly with sport, so much so that some people think that is the origin. None the less recent studies have shown that having a BMI greater than 25 is not healthy and the quality of life goes down as your BMI goes up. Coming from a person who once weighed 260 pounds, the grass is definitely greener on the other side. I once wore a size 24 and now slip into a slender size 2. Although my singing voice was not better 130 pounds heavier, there are many more enjoyable things I can now do. Instead of not being able to walk to the park with my 4 kids and falling asleep at 3 in the afternoon we all now run to the park and play on the slides together. I even challenge them on the swing from time to time. We have a new improved relationship. Treating people with weight problems has always been a daunting challenge for physicians. The solution is not as simple as telling patients to consume less food and I am personally familiar with this scenario from both sides of the weight loss fence. To date, I have lost over 120 pounds participating in the weight loss program offered by the Center for Medical Weight Loss (CMWL). I believe so strongly in their philosophy and products that I incorporated my professional career into my weight loss endeavor. I serve as the Weight Loss Specialist at the Center for Medical Weight Loss on University Drive, in Pembroke Pines, Florida. In my opinion, obesity is a disease plaguing the majority of Americans and as such the symptoms need to be treated under the direction of physicians through an individually customized weight loss program. Gabriela Rosenthal (before) As Americans we are constantly bombarded through the media to be thin and the rising costs of healthcare are through the roof as a result of our nation being overweight. There are numerous rewards and benefits afforded to people who maintain a healthy lifestyle including emotional stability, becoming medication free and statistically less prone to life shortening diseases. Each day, I am approached by our patients asking me, “What should my normal weight be?” I tell them that normal weight needs to be gauged on an individual basis. On average, a person’s weight routinely fluctuates between 10 and 15 pounds. This does not mean the patient can not be considered healthy; on the contrary, I advise patients to avoid being consumed with these numbers and understand that this weight variation should be considered a safe zone allowing leeway for other things to develop such as self-esteem, empowerment and positive thinking. There is a fine line between normal weight and being categorized as overweight and once a patient’s weight loss maintenance has begun, I do not like to see them gain more than five pounds from their goal weight. According to Webster’s Dictionary, the definition of overweight is, “the property of excessive fatness”. The term obese is classified as, “excessively fat”, or a “weighty man”. In the world of medicine we categorize a patient’s weight by determining their body mass index (BMI). The BMI provides the physician a definitive number which is used to calculate the percentage of body fat a person possesses. For example, a person between 20-25 is considered within the normal weight range. An individual scoring within 25-30 is categorized as overweight and those scoring between 30-40 are considered obese. Individuals scoring greater than 40 are categorized as morbidly

64 April 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com

obese and potentially 100 pounds overweight. Who is to say that a person within the normal range does not have 10-15 pounds more than the individual who’s BMI is closer to 20? From a health standpoint the physicians at CMWL feel that it makes more sense to define obesity in terms of fat percentage and not solely by measuring weight or BMI. A normal fat percentage can range anywhere from 20-30% for women and 18-25% for men. Our practice also has proprietary equipment that provides us with a full body composition analysis which can be used to determine a patient’s fat percentage, resting metabolic rate and daily caloric count. This means that all of us are afforded some room to grow. According to Dr. Cohn-Gelwasser, “there may not be many benefits associated with carrying a little extra weight; however, being too thin can be extremely dangerous.” For example, a BMI less than 20 is categorized too thin. Gelwasser analyzes every patient with a battery of tests to insure that there are no signs of anorexia, bulimia or malnutrition. At CMWL, we always perform a comprehensive blood screening to determine whether or not there The new, improved and are any underlying medical conditions contributing healthier Gabriela. to low body weight. . These results are needed to drop body fat to its lowest possible percentage while maintaining muscle mass and water percentage. Throughout history, society has embraced full figured women and it was considered fashionable to have love handles. However, in today’s America I prefer to slip on my skinny jeans. The Center for Medical Weight Loss at University Drive provides a clinical approach to shedding pounds with individualized, doctor-managed weight loss programs. The Center is located at 2209 N. to feel comfortable with their decision,” states Maria, who also provides prospective patients with a tour of the facility including its two state-of-the-art operating rooms. “A decision to have cosmetic surgery to enhance your appearance is an important one. We will provide you with the information you need to allow you to make an informed choice that is right for you.” Once the patient commits, the level of care only increases. The staff is trained to anticipate patient needs and wishes, providing an unsurpassed level of care in a beautiful, private setting. Maria gives patients her personal care and is there for them throughout the entire process. Patients are encouraged to call at any time if they have questions or concerns about their procedure or recovery. In fact, New Image’s post-operative care continues for up to a year following surgery. “We want to make sure patients are healing properly and are pleased with their outcome.” While Maria oversees most aspects of patient care, Dr. Jacobson’s responsibilities encompass ensuring New Image Cosmetic Surgery Center provides the best possible medical care. “We follow the same safety standards as a hospital, but our operating rooms feature specialized equipment you probably would not find in most hospitals,” explains Dr. Jacobson, who as an anesthesiologist is particularly concerned about patient sedation and pain management. For example, New Image Cosmetic Surgery Center has the state-of-the-art Bispectral Index Monitor, also called the BIS monitor. This measures the effects of anesthesia on a patient’s level of consciousness by monitoring brain activity. It enables the anesthesiologist to tailor the dose of anesthesia to the individual patient’s needs. “This can help patients wake up more quickly, feel alert sooner, and experience fewer side effects,” shares Dr. Jacobson, who notes that most of his patients are awake and alert within five minutes.

New Image Cosmetic Surgery Center offers two fully-equipped, state-of-the-art operating rooms. Courtesy of Maria Baiz Photography.

New Image Cosmetic Surgery Center offers a complete menu of cosmetic surgical procedures such as liposculpture, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), facelift, and breast augmentation including the non-scaring trans-umbilical procedure in which saline implants are inserted through a small incision in the belly button. In addition, the practice offers a variety of non-invasive treatments including Botox, Restylane, Juvéderm and Radiesse injectables, as well as a full line of laser therapy. While the list of services rivals that of any cosmetic surgery practice or med-spa, what truly distinguishes New Image Cosmetic Surgery Center from the others is its commitment to providing the highest level of patient care in the industry. First and foremost, the state-of-the-art facility is accredited by the nationally recognized Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. This accreditation means New Image Cosmetic Surgery Center has met stringent guidelines set forth for patient care and surgical procedures. It also ensures that the physicians and medical staff working in this facility are highly trained and skilled. The doctors are screened for education, training and competency, and are required to be credentialed at a hospital with the same privileges as their appointment at New Image. Achieving this accreditation was not an easy task, but it was important to New Image Cosmetic Surgery Center owners Dr. Philip and Maria Jacobson. The Weston couple both have extensive medical backgrounds and still practice. Medical Director Philip Jacobson, M.D., F.A.A.P.M. is an anesthesiologist and acute pain management specialist. Maria, who serves as Chief Nursing Officer and Administrator, is a registered nurse who handles all patient pre-operative and post-operative procedures. “We have put together a well-qualified team dedicated to the patient’s well-being and surgical outcome,” states Maria Jacobson. “Our patients have the confidence that they are getting the best care possible.” That begins with a consultation with both Maria and Dr. Jon Harrell, D.O., F.A.C.S., a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon with 23 years of experience. “Patients are invited to consult with us as many times as needed for them

Patient comfort and privacy are a top priority at New Image Cosmetic Surgery Center. Courtesy of Maria Baiz Photography.

In addition, Dr. Jacobson is pleased to offer patients specialized pain control which is not available in most practices. Ideal for abdominoplasty patients who typically experience a fair amount of discomfort for several days following surgery, this pain control results in a faster recovery with less sedation and an overall feeling of well being. New Image Cosmetic Surgery Center is conveniently located in the Nob Hill Professional Plaza at 10167 West Sunrise Boulevard, at the northeast corner of Nob Hill Road and Sunrise Boulevard, suite 104. business beat Work Smarter With A Virtual Office By Karen A. Condi

T

echnology advancements of today have provided workers with the ability to work virtually from almost any place in the world. Whether you are checking e-mail on your phone or logging into your secure corporate VPN via Wi-Fi from your local Starbucks, the ability to access your data anytime anywhere has never been greater. It used to be that we had to work in a physical office from 8-5 to conduct ‘business’ or access our corporate data files. Today, the rules have changed and many business professionals are no longer required to work within a set time or brick and mortar location. Around the world, more workers are taking advantage of Virtual Officing and the many benefits this way of working brings. The advantages of a virtual office are numerous but it’s important to fully understand what constitutes a true virtual office. Conceptually virtual offices started in the mid 1980’s, however the industry has dramatically evolved as technology has changed the way we work. As the 1990’s brought rise to the information age, new work solutions were needed to support company expansions and teams spread out over multiple locations. This movement continued through the decade and has led to a decentralization and shrinkage of the conventional office environments and an expansion of alternative officing solutions. Alternative officing solutions, specifically Virtual Offices, through office business centers continue to expand and adapt to the new requirements of today’s remote workers by providing necessary variations of services, providing supportive environments, and offering the most current technologies. As work-life balance continues to be a focus for today’s companies and workers; virtual offices provide the flexibility that workers need to conduct business while enjoying the ability to work on their terms. Today’s busy business professionals require the ability to work anytime-anywhere but still need excellent support, technology and tools to project the professional image successful businesses require. By offering the best of both worlds, a virtual office allows clients to work smarter while projecting the image of a traditional professional office.

The typical Virtual Office Packages on the market Include all or a portion of the following: ▸ Professional Business Address ▸ Mail and Package Handling Delivery ▸ Personal Mailbox ▸ Local Telephone Number and Call Handling ▸ Live Professional Reception Services ▸ Call Forwarding ▸ Voice Mail Services ▸ Meeting Facilities ▸ Furnished Office Access ▸ Administrative Support as Needed ▸ Copy , Print, Scanning & Fax Services ▸ Wi-Fi Access

72 April 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com

Virtual Offices provide companies of all sizes substantial benefits such as a dramatic reduction in overhead due to the decrease in costs associated with a physical office, furnishing requirements and upkeep. Major global companies such as IBM and Accenture have almost 50% of their workforces who work in “alternative workplaces,” of the 115,000 US IBM workers, 46,000 fall into this category. For the startup business, small business or entrepreneur the virtual office gives the company the ability to level the playing field of projecting the big business image at an all important affordable cost. For any size business the flexibility offered along with the elimination of long term leases and fit up costs is tremendous in today’s business environment. A virtual office allows any company to be up and running the same day, something simply not possible with traditional office space. More often than not, the Virtual Office address is one that is viewed as prestigious in the market, such as Main Street or a new up and coming business district. Companies which require local presence in a market, the virtual office solution provides the unique combination of a physical footprint as well as a daily staff member to tend to incoming shipments, documents, calls, etc. Many FORTUNE 1000 and international companies choose virtual office solutions to comply with government regulations and establish presence in a given market. Companies who embrace remote workforces are rewarded with higher levels of worker satisfaction, faster turn around times and increased productivity. Ironically workers who are working remotely or through a virtual office typically put in longer hours than their counterparts working in a physical office. Virtual Officing is favored by workers in almost all industries but the Financial, Legal, Real Estate, Marketing, Media, Technology Sales, Consulting, Healthcare and Small Business industries have high saturation of workers taking advantage of this solution. Weston’s premier virtual office provider, Lakeside Executive Suites, offers a full range of state-of-theart virtual office services. It’s Their Business M. Hibbard Frozen Custard’s Sweet Treat Comes to Town By Stacey Bomser

I

f you’ve never tried frozen custard, you’re in for a tasty treat. This delicious dessert is now available in Weston at the new M. Hibbard Frozen Custard. Owner Michael Joseph Hibbard uses the same time-honored traditions and family recipes

his great-grandfather created when he opened the family’s first frozen custard stand in upstate New York over 70 years ago. “The original Hibbard Frozen Custard stand is still in operation today, using the original custard machine,” boasts Hibbard, who grew up serving scoops of the family’s famous frozen custard. The New York-native attended the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, which is when he fell in love with the Weston community. While traveling around the country pursuing his passion as a steel sculpture artist, Hibbard recognized the full potential of his family dynasty. “I thought I could take our product to the next level.” And he certainly has. Using custard as his medium, the artist has created a menu of one-of-akind desserts. “This is more than just an ice cream shop, M. Hibbard Frozen Custard is a dessert destination,” states Hibbard. His favorite is the S’mores, which features creamy chocolate custard between two graham crackers topped with toasted marshmallow. Another popular treat is the Cookie Sandwich with rich vanilla custard sandwiched between two fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies. In keeping with the tradition of his family’s original custard stand, M. Hibbard

Frozen Custard also serves up old-time favorites such as hot fudge sundaes, banana splits, thick milkshakes and root beer floats. Of course, to truly appreciate the rich, velvety goodness of the frozen custard it’s best to buy a cone or cup. While the flavors will change on a weekly basis, chocolate and vanilla will always be on the menu. Hibbard says he plans to try a variety of tropical-inspired flavors such as mango, but he is open to suggestions.

He has the ability to experiment with flavors because the frozen custard is made fresh twice daily. “I do a run in the morning and another in the late afternoon,” explains Hibbard, who invites customers to watch the frozen custard being made using the propriety Hibbard’s Frozen Custard mix and special custard machine. Whatever is not used is packed into pints for customers to grab-n-go. M. Hibbard Frozen Custard is open from lunch through late evening everyday but Monday. It is conveniently located at 2334 Weston Road in the Waterways Shoppes II. To learn more, or to find out the flavors of the day, call (954) 385-1115. You can also follow what’s happening at M. Tax Talk Will the IRS Take an IOU? By Todd R. Bomser, CPA

The April 15th tax deadline is just days away. At this point, chances are that if you have not filed yet it is because you owe money. You can’t avoid the inevitable. After all, there’s a reason people joke that the only two guarantees in life are death and taxes. Paying up may be particularly painful for many Americans this year. With unemployment rates continuing to rise and hundreds of thousands of homes in foreclosure, not to mention all those struggling to make ends meet, even the IRS expects many taxpayers will come up short this year. If you find yourself in this situation, don’t panic. You are not alone. With a little planning, and perhaps some intervention from your professional tax preparer, you can come up with a workable solution. Here are some options to consider: ▸ Pay as much as you can. Even if you can’t afford to pay all that you owe, file your tax return and pay as much as you can. The IRS will send you an updated bill, plus interest, about 45 days later. That may be enough time for you to save up the rest of the payment. ▸ Communicate with the IRS. IRS agents are not the ogres they are portrayed to be on TV. If you communicate your situation to the IRS, you may be able to work out a payment plan. The IRS may even waive your penalties or provide a short-term extension. ▸ Consider all your options. IRS penalties can be quite costly. Your best bet is to do whatever you can to pay what you owe in full. Borrow from family, use a home-equity loan, or even charge it. That’s right, Uncle Sam takes credit cards. In fact, the IRS even states that the interest rate a bank or credit card charges is usually less than the combination of interest and penalties imposed by the

Refer A Friend Program! Call for details 954-424-8882

Internal Revenue Code. ▸ Consider a payment plan. If you simply can’t come up with money, ask the IRS if you can pay your tax bill over a period of months, or even years. Keep in mind, there are fees involved, and you will be charged interest and penalties. ▸ Consider an “offer in compromise.” Many Americans are facing financial hardships this year. If you lost your job or are losing your home to foreclosure, you can ask your tax preparer to apply for an offer in compromise. Under this program the IRS will settle your tax bill for less than what you owe. To qualify you must prove that you can not pay the full tax bill, or that doing so would create an economic hardship. Keep in mind, regardless of whether you have the money to pay or not, you must file a tax return. Not doing so is a criminal act and you could go to jail. So, make sure you file your return, even if you can’t afford to send a payment along with it. A professional tax preparer can help you decide which option is best for you and represent you when dealing with the IRS. Plus, by having an accountant prepare your tax return you can be sure you have maximized all available deductions, reducing the amount of money you owe. Many self-preparers overlook these items and end up paying more than they should. Todd R. positive Parenting The Night the Cable Went Out By Jodi Kurry Cohen, MS.Ed Director of Early Childhood Programs Temple Dor Dorim ECC

O

n a recent Wednesday night the cable went out in our neighborhood. In my opinion, Wednesday night has the best line up on TV, so to say I was disappointed would have been an understatement. There’s not many shows I’m devoted to, so when Wednesday night rolls around I make sure my family understands this is my night and to please limit their interruptions (oh please, they say the same to me)! On this particular Wednesday night I was agitated and continued to check to see if the cable was fixed yet. After realizing how nonproductive this was and several checks later, I decided to focus on something else. I sat down and began to sort through my mounting mail. When my 10 year old son saw that I was “available” he asked if I’d read with him. I have to admit I was feeling a little deprived of my “me” time since I couldn’t watch my shows but reluctantly said yes out of guilt. We sat on the couch and took turns reading out loud to each other from a Mike Lupica book that had become his recent favorite. As he cuddled up to me I was reminded of how much my child still loved this one on one time. When I really thought about it I realized how infrequently we were doing the things I thought he’d gotten too old for… baking cookies together, playing games, watching his favorite show with him and of course reading to him before bed. As he was growing older, those activities were being replaced with sports schedules, homework and my own running around at the end of the day. It seemed like a natural progression. As my son took his turn reading to me and I laid back and listened, I realized I was actually beginning to unwind from the day. Enjoying this, I started to think about

how I could get more of these “moments” back into our family routine. As I again started to think about our commitments and schedules and wondered how we would work around them to make time, I realized that these “roadblocks” weren’t really the problem. Yes, without a doubt we were slaves to our schedules, but how about the time in between and after? How was that time being spent? Television had become the culprit. If the adults had their favorite night of shows and the kids each had their night of favorite shows, how were we possibly finding any extra time to spend together? Just because my kids were growing up didn’t mean they were growing out of the need to spend time with their parents! That night I came to the conclusion that the cable going out had been a wakeup call. That being said, I’m not naïve enough to believe that my family would magically agree to turn off our TV each night and replace it with family time. What I did take from it was that family time needed to be put back into the schedule. I had assumed my family had outgrown “family time” when really what had happened was our shows had taken its’ place. Whether it’s reading a story, taking your child to a baseball game or even choosing a show you can all watch together, the most important thing to remember is that our children are never too old for family time. These family moments are what make our bonds even stronger. Jodi Cohen has a Masters degree in Elementary and Early Childhood Education as well as a Bachelor degree in Psychology. home décor

Accent Prone By Myriam Payne, INTERIORS by Decorating Den, Weston

A

lthough a supporting player for years, accent furniture has recently taken spotlight status as the star in home décor. Certainly, it still serves the purpose of providing interest in an already functional room, but more often these days designers are using accent furniture for all their furniture needs. Gone are the days of the matching suite’s dominance. In fact, the seeming consensus holds that the matching suite of furniture is a somewhat dull design option. Intriguing designs in a wide range of prices make accent furnishings the perfect choice for those homeowners seeking a change. If you usually play it safe by having everything match, now is the time to step out of your comfort zone and dare to be eclectic. In the living room, if you have matching tables, chairs and lamps – divide and conquer. Remove one or two of your wood tables and replace with a glass-topped, iron-based table. Add a single ottoman or a chair covered in a dramatic animal print. Eliminate one of a pair of table lamps and substitute with a stately floor lamp. If all your upholstered furniture sports the same fabric, break the monotony by recovering one or two pieces.

When stuck with a suite of bedroom furniture, you can make a striking difference by changing the bed. Introduce a sumptuous padded headboard or an impressive iron canopy bed. Break the set of night tables and replace one with a rectangular skirted table, a round-tiered table, or a painted chest. In your dining room, replace the two end chairs with fully upholstered ones that are of a different style and color than the side chairs. Or eliminate the breakfront and replace it with a beautifully printed buffet and a grand mirror. home & garden New Bugs In Town By Joanne Barber

Over the past 10 years the changes in the environment have brought many changes to the insect world. Insect Immigration is alive an well in Florida. After 28 years in pest control it is still amazing how insects learn to adapt and evolve, to survive weather, predators and chemicals. The first time we came across a White- footed black ant, we assumed it was just an ordinary black side walk ant in huge numbers. It was properly identified in 2007, by entomologist at the University of Florida. We doused them with every chemical we had in the arsenal and with 1 week it was as if we had not treated the property at all. Making a proper identification of an insect is vital in our business. We soon learned this was no ordinary black ant. Under a microscope we could see it’s thread like white feet (tarsi), it could walk over the chemical without picking up residual. It could reproduce, by swarming and almost 50% of the populations were believed to be female. They have a symbiotic relationship with ornamental insects. They will protect Scale, Mealy bugs, and Aphids the very insects that eat your plants. These insects produce honeydew in their excrement and white footed black ants love sweets. New professional use chemicals had to be produced. We are finally getting a handle on this pest. Anyone living in Florida knows and either loves or hates the Ficus tree or hedge. Although wonderful privacy fences their root system can be invasive. Landscapers and pest control companies could not kill or get rid of this plant easily. The Fig

White fly almost wiped them out in one year. We at first thought it was drought, then thrips, which never killed them before, but was opportunistic insect, after the ficus weakened. Fig White Fly was finally identified in South Miami and our fellow pest control operators, helped warn us right at the start of the infestation. The hard part explaining to our many customers why the ficus, which seemed so impervious for years, looked like it was lit on fire. Although we had the chemicals that trans-located through the plant, we did not know for sure how long each treatment would last. Most of our customers wanted to save their ficus hedge. We have been able to keep them healthy. Last but not lease our newest ornamental insect Soft Exotic Crouton Scale. Although discovered on crouton first in Monroe County. This scale does not discriminate and uses as its host more than just croutons. It is happy to reproduce on gumbo limbo trees, ficus and many other ornamentals. The male scale settles on the underside of the leaf and looks like a little brown bumps and the females almost look yellow and are larger. We have chemicals that can save your plants, but the home owner can make mechanical changes that may prevent the infestation of insects. Placement of you plants in your yard can stop much of the damage of a weakened plant: Too much water. Too much shade. Too much cutting and trimming. Sometimes too much care. Why Loan Modifications Simply Don’t Work By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

T

here are various opinions on what caused the real estate crisis. Whichever side is to blame, one thing is becoming increasingly evident – traditional loan modifications do not work. In 2009, less than 5% of all loan modification applications were approved by lenders, and more than half (55%) of loans modified were 30 days or more late within six months, according to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). While lenders claim to be more willing to modify borrowers’ loans, many just aren’t offering deals that borrowers can afford over the long term. Lenders promote loan modification because it is the best alternative for the lender, not the homeowner. These are the principal reasons why loan modifications fail. 1. Modified loans often carry higher balances than the original loan. Since many lenders add unpaid amounts to the principal loan balance, after a loan modification, homeowners often end up with more mortgage debt than they originally incurred. A recent study found that an average of $10,800 was added to mortgages when they underwent a modification. 2. Modified loans often carry higher monthly payments. It should come as little surprise that with few lenders reducing principal — and most tacking on fees to the loan balance — nearly half of all loan modifications actually resulted in increasing a borrower’s monthly payment. When a loan modification doesn’t reduce the monthly payment, or reduce it enough, the chances are quite high that the homeowner will fall behind again on payments. 3. Despite modifications, many homeowners are still upside down. Most borrowers owe far more than their home is worth after the real estate collapse. Since most modifications result in an increased principal loan balance, the time consuming process of a modification simply converts most homeowners into “renters” of their own home with no possibility of realizing any equity in their lifetime. 4. Homeowners accept unaffordable terms, and waive important legal rights Desperate to save their homes, many homeowners will accept loan modification offers they can’t really afford. Just several months after signing a loan modification agreement, most homeowners are usually in a worse position than when they began the process. Nearly every loan modification agreement contains a waiver of rights in which the homeowner must release the lender from any liability for serious violations of state and/or federal laws. 5. Navigating the system is difficult. Homeowners could be tied up in the loan modification process for months, will complete several rounds of applications and financial statements, and will wait hours on the phone. Many homeowners seek help from so-called “loan-modification specialists,” claiming to be affiliated with attorneys. Rest assured, these are outright scams. They will take your money upfront and do nothing in return.

End the Modification Insanity, and Take a Proactive Approach

First, perform a detailed audit of your loan, which may reveal serious violations of Federal and State laws committed by your lender. Banks, lenders and servicing companies will only negotiate fairly and justly with homeowners if you can demonstrate that they have violated the law and may be exposed to a judgment for significant damages. Second, hire a qualified law firm with knowledge about the types of claims a consumer has, and who can expose and use this very real threat against banks, lenders and servicing companies. Edit Section Head Community News Continued from Page 28 New This Year - Special Casting in the Nutcracker! This year’s camp has a special twist: girls who attend the full six weeks will be taught a special dance for inclusion in the gala stage production of the Nutcracker at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts in December. “Never before has this happened!” said Buttner. “Our summer dancers who participate will have a leg up during auditions and are guaranteed a spot in this fabulous holiday classic.” Auditions for the Nutcracker are traditionally held in mid-September each year; all dancers in South Florida are invited to try out! Likewise, dancers who want to get back in shape for the fall can take part in IDA’s August back-to-school Intensive Program. Contact the studio in early August for further details and the dates of the Intensive and the auditions. International Dance Academy offers ballet, pointe, partnering, tap, jazz and hiphop, Tutu Cuties and adult ballet classes. In addition, IDA is the only studio in South Florida that offers the internationally-recognized Royal Academy of Dance’s (RAD) training and examination program. RAD, whose patron is Queen Elizabeth II, is the most highly-regarded training and examining body for classical ballet in the world.

Steps To Forgiveness

1. Fully examine the wrong. Often it is helpful to express the resentment in your soul in a letter that you don’t send to the person who offended you. This helps to fully recognize the reality of whom and what you are asking yourself to forgive. 2. Confess your own sins. It’s important for you to honestly admit your own wrongs and take responsibility for your own life in the process of forgiveness. 3. Commit to the process of forgiveness. Understand it will take time, energy and persistence. If you find that you are struggling with the process of true forgiveness, contact Alina Gastesi-de Armas, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, at A Place for Growth, 954-257-6393 or visit www.APlaceforGrowth.com. She can assist you in working through your own barriers to forgiveness, and help you end the cycle of damaging relationships.

IDA is located in the Broward Lakes Business Park, 825 Shotgun Road off Indian Trace in Weston. For more information about the dance programs, call the studio at (954) 476-4419 or visit the website at www.IDA-dance.com.

dining out Every Day is Earth Day at Pizza Fusion By Stacey Bomser

W

hile the world will celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd, Pizza Fusion has decided to extend the event into a month-long celebration. That’s not surprising considering the restaurant chain’s commitment to earth-friendly practices. After all, the company motto is: “Saving the Earth, One Pizza at a Time.” It’s more than a motto, it’s a pledge. Pizza Fusion cares about the planet and its customers. It is pioneering the organic and environmental restaurant movement as the most eco-friendly restaurant in America. Not only was Pizza Fusion the first certified organic restaurant chain, it was also the world’s first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified pizzeria. The Weston Pizza Fusion has the distinguished honor of being the first LEED certified restaurant in Florida.

It’s proud to serve as an example to the Weston community on how to build and live green. “We’ve had many people come in and learn from some of the things that we’ve done in building the restaurant, which was one of our goals,” shares Kris Adam, owner of the Weston Pizza Fusion. “We don’t want to only be green, but to be able to show other people how to be greener as well.” The Weston Pizza Fusion features a number of earth-friendly practices that can easily be applied at home or in other businesses. For example, Pizza Fusion utilizes Energy Star appliances and low voltage lighting to reduce its energy consumption. To save on air conditioning, it added extra insulation made from recycled blue jeans. The restaurant also used non-VOC paints, which are readily available to consumers. It further reduces its carbon footprint by utilizing a fleet of hybrid vehicles to deliver food. While every day is Earth Day at Pizza Fusion, the restaurant is running a monthlong promotion in celebration of Earth Month. Customers who purchase any Honest Tea beverage in April will receive a free personal cheese pizza. In addition, they will be entered to win one of four fantastic, earth-friendly prizes. Pizza Fusion’s four grand prize packages include: an all-expenses paid trip to a sustainable winery in California’s wine country, an all-expenses paid trip to the Shipyard organic brewery in Portland, Maine, a one-year supply of organic dairy products courtesy of Organic Valley, or a one-year supply of organic produce, sponsored by Earthbound Farm. The Weston Pizza Fusion is located in the Waterways Shoppes II at 2378 Weston Road. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner daily. To place an order for pick-up, or delivery via one of Pizza Fusion’s hybrid delivery vehicles, call (954) 641-5353. To learn more, visit www.pizzafusion.com.

Pet Care

AARP...For Pets? By Dr. Peter Birzon, DVM

I

s your pet a member of AARP? The “Animal Association of Really-loveable Pets!” Their medical and nutritional needs change as they age much the same as ours. The joints start to wear down and arthritis sets in. Their major organs like the kidney, liver and heart will begin to feel the effects of years of service. Obviously, some breeds are more predisposed to certain ailments and genetics in general, play a huge role in longevity and geriatric health. What can we do as their caregivers to promote and sustain optimal health? First, look for the early warning signs. Stiffness when getting up after periods of rest or a reluctance to jump or walk like they did before indicates sore joints…ie…arthritic changes. Pain experts feel that pets have a MUCH higher pain tolerance so by the time your pet is limping….it hurts! After all, a pet has an ovariohysterectomy(spay) and goes home six hours later walking on their own. Not so in the human counterpart! Their pain is real even if they don’t complain like we do. Simple tests like an orthopedic exam and x-rays can give us the insight we need to help them medically. We use both natural supplements and anti-inflammatory medications in most cases of typical arthritis and degenerative joint disease. We can also perform more advanced diagnostics like CAT scans and MRI if needed. I have also used acupuncture in a number of cases with favorable results. Increased thirst is a common sign of many different potential problems. Endocrine disorders like Cushings disease or diabetes, renal and liver disease, infection and many

more all can have polydipsia(increased thirst) and more frequent urination(polyuria). It’s extremely important to detect these problems early through blood tests and a urinalysis. We offer routine senior lab testing so we can catch these problems before a crisis occurs. Coughing more frequently in our geriatric patients may be a sign of anything form tracheal collapse to lung or heart disease. If the teeth and gums contain a lot of tartar, plaque and gingivitis, then these factors may be contributing to the condition by seeding these areas with bacteria. Nightime coughing or lack of exercise tolerance could indicate heart disease. X-rays, an electrocardiogram and a sonogram will allow us to pinpoint and treat the problem quickly. We have routine geriatric wellness programs designed to maximize your pet’s long term quality of life….it’s more affordable than you think and we can customize it to your pet’s specific needs. Call or stop by to discuss any of these or other issues with our staff. Maximum quality of life is our goal for your pet. Dr. Peter Birzon, DVM has been practicing veterinary medicine for over 20 years and has owned and operated four animal hospitals in South Florida. Indian Trace Animal Hospital is located in Weston at 1420 North Park Drive. You can reach him at Phone: 954-384-7147. E-mail: indiantrace@petmedicalcenters.com. On the web: itah.vetsuite.com

Your Money You’ve Got Questions - We’ve Got Answers by Christopher Ure & Al Martinez, UBS Financial Services

Q - The DOW is at 10,600 and is up 60% in the last year. I got out of the market about a year ago. Is this a good time to get back in? A - First of all, it is our fundamental opinion that an “investor” is not out of the market. We leave that to the gamblers/speculators. That being said, it is most important to have clearly understood investment objectives and a reasonable idea of your risk tolerance. We would find it difficult for most anyone to achieve their long term financial goals without some exposure to equities. When you make the decision to get “out” of the market you have to not only be right as to when to get out but also when to get back in. This is an impossible task to get right all the time. We do believe this is a good time to be an investor in equities but the 60% move in the market does suggest some modest caution in the near term. We would suggest a dollar cost averaging approach over the next 612 months with some downside triggers should we see any semblance of a selloff in the market. Q - Interest rates are very low. I am retired and need income producing investments. What are you recommending to your clients? A - This is probably one of the most difficult issues facing our retired clients today. First, we think it is most important not to stretch for yield. In other words, every investor should have criteria that doesn’t waiver just because income yields are low. Remember what you are doing when you buy a bond you are loaning some entity your hard earned money. Your credit standards should not be relaxed simply to get more income. We have the majority of client assets in very safe, high quality, tax-exempt municipal bonds where we see tremendous value (particularly if income tax rates increase as we expect). There are step-up FDIC insured CDs we have bought recently with attractive yields. We also recommend clients allocate some portion of their portfolios to Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs), high yield municipal bond funds and diversified equity portfolios with a dividend focus. These investments will provide better yields and an element of diversification to an income focused portfolio. You should consider annuities that provide guaranteed minimum income benefits. These types of annuities are excellent planning tools and can effectively turn defined contribution plans into your own personal pension plan with defined income benefits. Q - I am hearing a lot about the ROTH IRA conversion. Is this something I should consider? A - We believe everyone with a qualified plan should evaluate this opportunity but

it is not the right thing to do for everyone. This is, in our opinion, a very attractive strategy for investors that meet certain criteria but this should only be considered with the assistance of a knowledgeable financial professional. While we do not know your unique situation, there are some basic guidelines to help decide if this is something for you to consider. We feel strongly you should only consider this if you can pay the conversion taxes from a source outside the IRA. You should also expect your retirement tax bracket (including state and local taxes where applicable) to be higher than your current tax bracket for the conversion to have maximum benefit. There are many other advanced planning strategies for particularly wealthy individuals that would be difficult to address in this forum. We strongly encourage anyone with significant assets in a qualified plan (i.e. IRA, 401k, 403b, self-directed pension, Keough, etc.) to seek the advice of a financial professional with specific expertise in this area. Q - I lost a lot of money in the tech crash in 2000-2002. I still believe in technology companies but I am afraid to lose more money. A - We believe there are great companies in every sector including technology. Technology companies require significant capital to continue to innovate and secure their future market share. There are great opportunities in cash-rich, high growth technology companies today. Our focus is generally on large cap companies with defensible market positions and significant barriers to entry for competitors. The small and mid-cap technology companies offer tremendous upside potential but also more risk. We would encourage investors to utilize professional money managers (i.e. mutual funds, separate account managers) with expertise in this asset class or get adequate diversification through an exchange traded fund (ETF).
