Community news city encourages emergency and Hurricane Preparedness
By StAcey BomSer
Hurricane Wilma knocked down trees, tore the roofs off homes and caused major destruction throughout the City of Weston.
2010
is already shaping up to be an active storm season and the City of Weston is encouraging residents to be prepared. It is offering a variety of tools to keep you and your family safe and informed in the event of a tropical storm, hurricane or other catastrophe. ReadyTown allows residents, and local business owners, to create an individualized emergency preparedness plan. Weston was the first city in the nation to offer this service. “Preparedness is key. The better our community is prepared prior to a disaster, the better our community will be post-disaster,” explains Denise Barrett, Director of Communications for the City of Weston. “This emergency preparedness tool can save people from injury, save untold dollar values in property damage, provide peace of mind and educate residents on a variety of issues. There is no downside.” ReadyTown is easy to use and fun to do, which is why it works so successfully. By following the simple, step-by-step, online guide, residents can ensure they are prepared in the event of a natural disaster or any type of emergency situation. To access ReadyTown go to www.westonfl.org, under Residents & Visitors click on Hurricane/Flood Info, then click on Make a Plan (ReadyTown) under the Hurricane Preparedness Topics.
There is no fee to use ReadyTown which features three main sections: Make a Plan, Build a Kit, and Learn to Prepare. The site includes practical tips for your family such as how to ensure everyone is safe in the event of an emergency, where to meet, who to contact, and what to do if you cannot return home. ReadyTown also offers over 300 articles from trusted sources such as the American Red Cross, FEMA, and the CDC on everything from How to Purify Drinking Water to Coping with Emotional Stress. In addition to assisting users in making an emergency plan and checklists of essential survival items, ReadyTown will send the user email reminders on what still needs to be completed and a list of items that still need to be obtained. The prepared-

ness plan can be emailed so it is accessible anywhere at any time. In the event that a major tropical storm or hurricane does strike the Weston community, residents are encouraged to participate in the Broward County Home Damage Assessment Program. It’s a simple way to report damage to your home and provide county officials with critical early indication of where major damage has occurred. After the storm has passed and it is safe to go outside, residents should survey the damage to their home. Then, compare your home to four sample photos and select the one that best represents its condition. You can download those photos at http://gis. broward.org/damage/ and keep a copy with your hurricane supplies. Following a storm, residents can submit a home damage assessment report at that site or by calling the Broward County Hurricane Hotline at 3-1-1.
Finally, if you have not already done so, be sure to register with CodeRED. The City of Weston utilizes this emergency notification system to inform residents of emergency and life safety situations that require immediate action such as drinking water contamination, extended power outages, chemical spills and so on. Utilizing an ultra high-speed telephone communication service, CodeRED is capable of dialing the entire City within minutes. The system delivers a recorded message describing the situation and any instructions for immediate or future action. Messages are also available by text message or email alerts. Registering for CodeRED is simple. All you need to do is click the CodeRED Enrollment link on the City of Weston homepage (www.westonfl.org). You will be required to enter your name, address and phone number(s) into the secure site. Your information remains private and will only be used for critical communications. Taking a few minutes now to complete these emergency preparedness tools can keep you and your family safe and secure this storm season.

Three Keys to a Successful Financial Plan By Pamela Yellen, author of Bank On Yourself: The Life-Changing Secret to Growing and Protecting Your Financial Future
Imagine what it would be like to have a financial plan that gives you predictability, Pamela Yellen, control and tax advantages – a method that President, Bank On Yourself lets you bank on yourself, rather than Wall Street, the government, or an employer. Such a method already exists… and has for over a century. Hundreds of thousands of people use it, and not one lost a single penny in their plans when the stock and real estate markets crashed. In fact, their nest-eggs have all continued growing every year – safely and predictably. As a consultant to financial advisors, I’ve researched over 450 savings and investing products and strategies. I was fortunate to finally stumble on a method that many folks agree may well be the best way to invest money. I call it “Bank On Yourself,” because it lets you take back control of your financial future, stop relying on others for your financial security, and become your own source of financing. Let’s take a look at the three keys to a successful financial plan that this time-tested method gives you: Key #1: Predictability My research led me to conclude that Americans have been brainwashed into believing we must risk our money in order to grow it. It is possible to grow a substantial nest egg – without the risk or volatility of stocks, mutual funds, real estate, and other investments.
There is an asset class that has increased in value during every stock market decline and every period of economic boom and bust for more than a century. That asset is dividend-paying whole life insurance. A dividend-paying whole life policy grows by a guaranteed and pre-set amount every year. In addition, the growth is exponential, meaning it gets better every single year you have the policy, simply because you stick with it. And no luck, skill, or guesswork is required to make that happen. Furthermore, there are little-known options that can be added to the policy which turbo-charge the growth of your equity (“cash value”) in the policy. Both your guaranteed annual cash value increase, plus any dividends you may receive, are locked in. They don’t vanish due to a market correction. While dividends aren’t guaranteed, some companies have paid them every single year for over 100 years, including during the Great Depression. This gives you peace of mind for retirement planning, because you’ll know the minimum guaranteed income you could take in retirement. Key #2: Control You control the money in your policy, not the government. You can use it when and how you choose, without the restrictions or penalties common to 401(k)’s and other plans. You can use the money to become your own source of financing, so you can eliminate the control banks and financial institutions have over you. You can get access to your equity in the policy by answering just one question: How much do you want? No begging, no prying credit applications to fill out, and no
need to pledge your first born. Key #3: Tax Advantaged One of the biggest appeals of 401(k)’s is that they allow you to defer your taxes. But what direction do you think tax rates will be going over the long term? If you believe taxes are going up, and you’re successful in growing your nest-egg, you’ll only end up paying higher taxes on a bigger number! Even if tax rates stay the same, it’s estimated that by deferring your taxes, you’ll ultimately pay 10-20 times more in taxes over a 30-year period! Consider paying your taxes up front – at least you know what they are. Dividend-paying whole life is taxed more like a Roth IRA – you fund it with after-tax dollars and you can take a retirement income from the policy with little or no tax consequences, under current tax law. There are many myths about this powerful financial tool. That’s why I created the $100,000 Challenge. It lets you test your knowledge of the facts about Bank On Yourself, and a $100,000 cash reward awaits the first person who has a different strategy that can match or beat it. Community news Arts council of Greater Weston Gears Up for Great year
By StAcey BomSer
M
embers of the Arts Council of Greater Weston have had a busy summer. This dedicated group of volunteers has been busy planning an exciting season celebrating the arts and culture in the Weston community. Their work began with the installation of the new Executive Board for the 2010-2012 term. Weston Mayor Eric Hersh attended the dinner celebration, where he formally inducted the new board members. Outgoing President Andrea Sanders was also recognized for her achievements. Each year the Arts Council of Greater Weston spearheads four major community events: The Wonderful World of Weston; Weston Foreign Film Series; Student Artists Showcase; and ArtWalk and ShowTime. The community’s cultural season kicks off with The Wonderful World of Weston. This year’s program is scheduled for Tuesday, October 19th at the Hyatt Regency Bonaventure. This popular event highlights our diverse community through arts and culture. It features the works of talented local artists and performers, as well as exhibit tables promoting various organizations and programs in the area. The Wonderful World of Weston is free and open to the public.
The Arts Council of Greater Weston recently installed its new Board. Pictured standing from left: Joe Preite, Rochelle Koenig, Muriel Fields, Eli Habib, Jami Rahn, Betsy Bennett and Joyce Albrecht. Pictured seated from left: Norma Sonnenklar, Joyce Rhone, President Joy Rodenberg, Eileen Purisch and Immediate Past President Andrea Sanders. Not pictured: Tom Kallman.
The popular Weston Foreign Film Festival begins in November. The Weston 8 Cinema hosts a fabulous film presentation on the second Monday of each month, November through March. The featured movies are selected by the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. Seating is limited; series tickets will go on sale early next month. The Student Artists Showcase features the work of Weston’s most talented students. This highly-anticipated annual event is held each winter. Artwork from Weston elementary, middle and high school students is exhibited at the Weston Branch Library for all to admire. Prizes are awarded to the top winners in five age groups. The 5th annual ArtWalk and ShowTime will showcase the talent of our local visual and performing artists. The juried event will feature work by painters, photographers, sculptors, creative crafters and original jewelry designers who live in the Greater Weston area or are members of the Weston Art Guild. The ShowTime portion of the event will highlight local performers including musicians, singers and dancers. Thousands of people attend this outdoor celebration at Weston Town Center each spring. “We invite all our residents not only to take part in these events, but also to bring us new ideas,” states Joy Rodenberg, President of the Arts Council of Greater Weston. “We’ve received many suggestions for additional events and we want everyone to take part in planning and presenting them. With the help of cooperating organizations and individuals, we can expand our reach to new areas of the arts and to new audiences.” The Arts Council of Greater Weston is a nonprofit, all volunteer organization working to enhance the quality of life for Weston residents through the arts. In addition to its sponsored events, the Arts Council compiles an artist directory and online cultural calendar. For more information visit www.ArtsCouncilWestonFL.com. Caring & sharing Weston couple Supports community through United Way
R
ay and Julie Southern have been longtime supporters of the United Way of Broward County. The Weston couple has given their time, talent, financial support, and now their home to this organization. They recently hosted a Tocqueville Society reception. More than 50 current and prospective members attended to learn more about United Way’s initiatives in southwest Broward County. United Way of Broward County is a nonprofit organization working to advance the common good in our communities by focusing on three impact areas: education, health and income. In fact, it is the single largest non-governmental funder of health and human services. Last year alone, United Way had a total impact of over $47 million across the county. United Way’s Tocqueville Society recognizes local philanthropic leaders and volunteer champions who have devoted their time, talent and funds to create longlasting changes by tackling our communities’ most serious issues. Members of the Tocqueville Society invest generously in our community by contributing $10,000 or more per year to the United Way of Broward County. Weston’s Ray and Julie Southern have been active members for over ten years. He sits on the Board of Directors and serves on the Development and Communications Committee, while she serves on both the Allocations Committee as well as the Tocqueville Steering Committee. “Being a member of the Allocation Committee provides me with a distinct view of the variety of needs within our community. I see so many people who are personally trying to make a difference. It’s moving to know that there are people who still care about others enough to make it their mission to make a difference,” states Julie Southern. “I see firsthand how the United Way makes our community a better place to work, live and raise our families.” Unfortunately, with the economy the way it is, the need is now greater than ever. Broward County is setting records – highest unemployment rate in 20 years, double

digit increases in homelessness, and overwhelming need for food. According to the United Way of Broward County: “These children and families are relying upon the generosity of people like you to make the difference between hope and despair. In today’s economy, the individuals that need support are our friends, families and co-workers.” Through the generous support of Tocqueville Society members such as the Southerns, or other Weston residents including Steve and Lori Sadaka, James and Cathy Donnelly, Michael and Lainie Zager, Maureen Kempston Darkes, and Keith and Lynne Urtel, United Way of Broward County is able to assist these families in need. “It’s a unique opportunity as a Board member to help oversee the numerous ways that the United Way of Broward County focuses on the community’s most dire needs,” shares Ray Southern. “It’s a good feeling to know that you’re helping achieve goals that are changing people’s lives for the better.” The United Way focuses on three main areas of impact: education, income and health. It helps children and youth achieve their potential through education by promoting academic achievement in the classroom, responsible decision-making, family literacy and an increase in high school graduation rates. The United Way helps families become financially stable and independent by offering job readiness skills training and employment, financial education to increase savings, credit counseling/ guidance to increase home ownership, and home foreclosure prevention. It improves people’s health by supporting health care for children and families, maternal health and infant well-being, child abuse prevention, and productive older adults. To learn more about United Way of Broward County or to make an online donation, visit www.unitedwaybroward.org. To inquire about joining the Tocqueville Society, please contact Nancy Thies at nthies@unitedwaybroward.org or call 954-4624850, extension 210.

Can do Kids teens teach Dangers of toxic Drinking
Cypress Bay Seniors Brianna Schechter (left) and Karli Rosen plan to start a Red Watch Band program on campus to promote alcohol abuse awareness.
F
riends Brianna Schechter and Karli Rosen were hanging out, flipping through the pages of a magazine when they noticed an ad that would forever change their lives, and hopefully those of their classmates at Cypress Bay High School. The ad was promoting Red Watch Band, a bystander awareness program that educates and provides students with the skills to prevent peers’ toxic drinking deaths. The girls immediately thought it would be a great program to bring to their school and community. “We hear stories weekly about students on weekends who have passed out, or had to have their stomachs pumped from drinking too much, and we figured that there should be some way we can help students realize how horrible this is,” shares Brianna Schechter, an incoming senior at Cypress Bay High School. “At our age, high school students begin experimenting with alcohol, for one reason or another,” explains Karli Rosen, who will also be a senior this year. “The Red Watch Band gives teens courage and teaches them when medical attention is neces necessary. For example, when there is a party and someone passes out due to an alcohol overdose, it is likely that teens will run the other way in fear of getting in trouble. Red

Watch Band teaches kids my age that it is sometimes necessary to risk punishment for a loved one’s life.” Their goal is to establish a Red Watch Band chapter at Cypress Bay High School this year. They want to make as many fellow students as possible aware of the dangers of toxic drinking. Toxic drinking is an epidemic on high school and college campuses. Drinking is considered toxic when the drinker consumes so much alcohol that he/she passes out. But, while “sleeping it off,” the victim may be quietly dying. Although there are no statistics for high school students, it is estimated that 30,000 college students require medical treatment after overdosing on alcohol each year. Sadly, 1,825 college students die annually from alcohol-related injuries. Fortunately, many of these injuries and deaths can be prevented. Red Watch Band teaches students how to recognize when a peer is drinking too much, as well as how to handle alcohol emergencies and summon medical help. In order to bring the program to Cypress Bay, Brianna and Karli had to attend a “Train the Trainer” session at SUNY Stony Brook, where the program started. “We learned everything necessary in order to educate our fellow classmates and friends on alcohol abuse and CPR,” says Karli. Shortly before the end of last school year, the girls hosted their first Red Watch Band program which consists of CPR certification and an alcohol education class. Cypress Bay health teacher Mary Adas taught the CPR class, while Karli and Brianna taught the alcohol emergency training session. “The Red Watch Band provided us with a PowerPoint presentation that consists of alcohol information, alcohol related death statistics, and how to be aware of someone who has been drinking way too much and how to handle that situation,” says Brianna.
Brianna Schechter and Karli Rosen conducted an alcohol abuse course for Cypress Bay students interested in joining Red Watch Band.
“The alcohol abuse course also consists of role play that helps students understand what to do in dangerous situations.” “The main issue that we face today is that teens are scared and unwilling to call 9-1-1 due to consequences,” explains Karli. “With the help of the Red Watch Band, people our age will gain confidence that, in turn, will create a safer campus environment.” Everyone who completes the program receives a red watch. It symbolizes the “band” of students who are trained to “watch” over one another. The girls hope, that through their efforts, everyone at Cypress Bay will one day be sporting red watch bands. Cypress Bay students Yari Rostamian (left), Jennifer Schneider, Brette Berman, Erica Eisler and Jennifer Schaecter took part in a CPR training class as part of the Red Watch Band program.

about a math concept,” notes Wise. The young students are also learning computer literacy. A skill that is particularly important as they matriculate into the Sagemont Middle and High School where students use laptop computers in the classroom. “Our computer curriculum provides extra practice in math and reading skills, and it also challenges students who are working on more advanced skills. We have some students who make their own power points, look up information on the internet, and find clip art online to complete a homework project!” boasts Wise. In addition to academics, the young Sagemont students are learning character and citizenship. “We have our school wide I-Care program which we use everyday, plus we do community service throughout the school year both school wide and as a grade level,” explains Eisensmith. Last year her pre-K students collected fun band-aids which they delivered to patients in the Children’s Oncology Division at Memorial Regional Hospital. Kindergarten students completed chores at home to earn a new pair of shoes which they donated to needy Broward County students. “We delivered 50 pairs of shoes to a nearby kindergarten class and it was an amazing experience. t’s no secret that The Sagemont School is known for its outstanding academic program. Graduating seniors are accepted at some of the most prestigious universities in the country including Cornell, Duke, Penn and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, to name just a few. This path to academic excellence starts with the school’s youngest students. Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students at Sagemont participate in a variety of academically-stimulating and emotionallyenriching activities. “The Sagemont program is highly academic, but we maintain a very nurturing and age appropriate environment,” explains Kindergarten Teacher Julie Wise. “We recognize that our students are only four or five years old and they also need to develop socially and emotionally. They may be learning to read and write, but you will see us doing it through music, movement, and fun, hands-on activities.” Sagemont utilizes a program called Differentiated Instruction, in which teachers work with each child at his or her own level. “We practice the philosophy that each child is a unique individual and we work with the whole child and their needs,” explains Barbara Eisensmith who has been teaching pre-K at Sagemont Pre-kindergarten students at The Sagemont School mark the 100th Day of School with themed activities and a pajama party. for over a decade. dent to start his own project of collecting dish soap to give to the Bird Sanctuary of The early education curriculum includes pre-reading, literacy, vocabulary, mathTampa after the oil spill,” shares Wise. ematics, science, Spanish, music, art and physical education. Community news Weston Shows its Patriotic Pride on July 4th
By StAcey BomSer
T
he Weston community celebrated our nation’s independence with a patriotic parade on July 4th. More than 1,000 spectators lined the streets of the Weston Town Center to watch the City’s 13th July 4th Hometown Parade. This year’s event featured more than 40 entries from local churches, businesses and community organizations including the Arts Council of Greater Weston, Friends of the Library, Sheinberg Family YMCA, and Girl Scouts from the Royal Palm Service Unit. The theme of the 2010 July 4th Hometown Parade was Weston – Sharing & Caring. It’s a theme demonstrated throughout the community, but especially within the Weston schools. The Grand Marshals were two Weston teachers who both exemplify the true meaning of sharing and caring by going above and beyond their call to duty as educators. Patty DeBiase, a third grade teacher at Indian Trace Elementary School, has spent seven years working with Relay For Life. He has also helped develop a program to unite fellow educators in the fight against childhood obesity, is a volunteer at St. Bonaventure, and has helped organize various community projects such as the BSO Toy Drive, Harvest Food Drive, a school supply drive and a fundraiser for the American Heart Association. Sophia Gelin, a first grade teacher at Manatee Bay Elementary School, is a leading force behind the volunteer efforts at her school. In the wake of last January’s devastating earthquake in Haiti, she organized a school-wide food drive and initiated a planning committee comprised of teachers, staff and parents to form “Step It Up for Haiti.” Several survivors from the Haiti earthquake marched in the parade as guests of the Arts Council of Greater Weston. These young refugees were students of Weston resident Mathieu Daquin. The Arts Council celebrated Weston’s cultural diversity with participants dressed in native costume or patriotic colors representing ten different nationalities. “The Weston community is so diverse and it’s fantastic that an event such as this can bring the residents together to celebrate our outstanding community leaders and our nation’s independence,” stated Weston City Commissioner Mercedes Henriksson.
Weston teachers Sophia Gelin (left) and Patty DeBiase were chosen as Grand Marshals because they both embody this year’s parade theme, Weston – Sharing & Caring.

Weston City Commissioners Angel Gomez (left), Daniel Stermer, Mercedes Henriksson and Murray Chermak greeted the crowd.
The Arts Council highlighted the talents of Weston’s arts community including a local Latin American dance group.

nternational Dance Academy (IDA) is gearing up for its biggest year ever with a full schedule of regular classes, a one-week Summer Intensive Dance Program, Open Auditions for the Nutcracker Ballet, the Royal Academy of Dance training and examination program, and two full-length professional productions on the schedule.
Classes and Teachers: Simply the Best!
One of the reasons IDA’s enrollment more than doubled last year is the teaching philosophy at the studio. IDA’s teachers – all of whom perform professionally – believe that even the most difficult technique must be shown, rather than just explained. The teachers are both artists and athletes. Artistic Director Deborah Buttner, an acclaimed ballerina with international experience, is qualified in both the Royal Academy of Dance and Cecchetti methods. A graduate of the prestigious London Studio Center Classical Ballet program and trained in both South Africa and England, Buttner has toured the British Isles and America performing numerous lead roles. “I believe demonstrating the most demanding classical techniques and variations is essential to inspiring and correctly training students,” says Buttner, who began her dance career in South Africa, under the guidance of Mary Buttner, her teacher/mother, who today offers her many years of experience to the young dancers at IDA. IDA’s international faculty includes Eriberto Jimenez, a soloist with the Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami and Minjeong Jo, whose serenely graceful style reflects her Asian roots. The cultural melting pot at IDA is great fun for children and helps experienced dancers develop their own unique style and voice.
Open House August 21;
IDA’s Open House on Saturday, August 21 from 1-4 p.m. is a chance to meet the teachers, check out the facilities and see for yourself why IDA is in a class of its own! The studio is offering free ballet and jazz classes; dancer assessment and class placement, and registration for fall. The registration fee will be waived for dancers presenting proof of previous registration at another studio. Come dressed to dance and join the fun.

Summer Intensive
Dancers who want to kick-start their dance year can sign up for IDA’s one-week Summer Intensive Program from August 16-20. The stretching, strengthening and technique classes will “shake off the cobwebs” and get dancers ready for fall. Classes are open to all dancers.
Nutcracker Bigger Than Ever
“At IDA, we do full-length shows, not recitals,” explains Buttner. With Open Auditions for the Nutcracker on September 25, all local dancers are looking forward to the tryouts. “We welcome auditions by all dancers in the community who want the experience of dancing in a full-scale professional production at a major performing arts theater,” says Buttner. “We like to inspire our young dancers through the challenges, excitement and learning that comes with a spectacular full-scale theater production each year,” says Buttner. This year’s Nutcracker will be performed Friday-Sunday, December 10-12 at Coral Springs Center for the Arts. According to Buttner, “The production will be our biggest ever, and the memories will last forever.” The state-of-the-art studios provide a family-friendly environment where dancers – new or experienced – are encouraged to dream.
Royal Academy of Dance Program, Proof of IDA’s Excellence
“Whether dancing for fun or pursuing a dance career, the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) credential puts our dancers at great advantage,” says Buttner. “They also gain confidence and the great satisfaction of knowing they met the most rigorous standards in dance. The International Dance Academy is the only studio in South Florida offering this prestigious academic program which is an added advantage on college applications.” IDA students who have taken their RAD exams have enjoyed a 100% pass rate. RAD is the most highly-regarded training and examining body for classical ballet in the world under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth II. Dancers study a defined curriculum, are given a rigorous standardized test, and if successful are awarded an internationally-recognized certification. International Dance Academy, founded in 2000, is located in the Broward Lakes Business Park at 825 Shotgun Road in Weston. For more information on all the programs, call (954) 476-4419 or visit the website at www.IDA-dance.com.

health & wellness A Shiny New car for life By Dr. BroWNer & Dr. BeHAr
I
magine when you were born you were a given a shiny, new car. You were told this car had to last your entire lifetime, it was the only car you would have and that many of the critical components were irreplaceable. How would you care for this car? Would you inspect it regularly with loving maintenance, or wait for the engine to seize before checking the oil? Most likely, you would look after this car like your life depended on it! Your life does depend upon the health and well-being of your spine, and your spine has to last a lifetime. Many families choose to benefit from regular chiropractic care because they recognize the value and wisdom of good spinal hygiene. They understand a healthy spine begins with correct, balanced posture and normal spinal alignment. They know incorrect spinal alignment effects the nervous system, increasing susceptibility to many health problems. They appreciate that poor alignment also causes premature aging through accelerated spinal decay, disc and joint degeneration, reduced muscle function, and loss of mobility, energy, vitality and general well-being. Above all, families who choose regular chiropractic care understand that maintaining spinal health is an on-going process, as necessary as good dental hygiene or regular car maintenance.
Stay-at-home mom? You need Allstate life insurance. I can help you protect your family at an affordable price. To replace all you do to keep up your household, it would cost around $138,000* a year. I can help you take care of your family even if something happens to you. Call me today.

The goal of chiropractic care is to keep people healthy. Unfortunately, many people wait until they are in pain before going to their chiropractor, unaware that spinal conditions, like other health problems, can be symptom-free for weeks or years before pain develops. These people mistakenly confuse health with absence of pain. Think: if simply being pain-free meant you were healthy, then wouldn’t painkillers make you healthy? The healthiest people would be those taking the most painkillers! The reality is true health does not mean simply being free of symptoms. Ask anyone who has survived a sudden heart attack. Preventative care, whether it’s for the heart, teeth or spine, helps detect and correct silent problems before a crisis occurs. On the other hand, the “crisis management” approach to health is analogous to waiting for the engine to seize before checking the oil. It is painful, costly and usually preventable. Regular chiropractic care can help avoid health crises, and provide the foundation for a wellness approach to healthy living. Do it for yourself. Do it for your family. Do it because it’s smart! Cleveland Clinic Florida ranked one of America’s Best Hospitals…
cleveland clinic Florida offers innovative treatment options for Uterine Fibroids
M
any women have uterine fibroids which are non-cancerous growths in a woman’s uterus. These growths occur in up to 75 percent of all women and are one of the leading causes of hysterectomies. Fibroids can cause heavy bleeding, pelvic pain and pressure, bowel and bladder dysfunction, and in some cases, infertility. Understanding new treatment options and advances is essential for women with fibroids. Today there are a variety of effective treatments that offer minimal recovery time and side effects and can also preserve a woman’s fertility.
Once again, U.S.News & World Report has ranked Cleveland Clinic Florida among the top 50 in the nation. This year, our Gastroenterology and Diabetes & Endocrinology programs have been singled out for this prestigious recognition. Cleveland Clinic Florida is one of only three Florida-based gastroenterology programs to make the top 50, and achieved the highest rankings in the State of Florida. It is also one of only a handful in the nation offering some of the most advanced diagnostic and treatment options. Also ranked in the top 50, our endocrinology program focuses on complex conditions, ranging from diabetes to adrenal and thyroid disorders. We are proud to be recognized nationally for the outstanding care we provide our patients.

Non Surgical Treatment Options for Uterine Fibroids
For women who experience mild to moderate symptoms, medication can lessen the severity of symptoms. Treatments can include birth control pills, hormone treatments and over-the-counter pain relievers.
Uterine Fibroid Embolization For women with severe symptoms, Cleveland
Clinic Florida offers uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). UFE is a minimally invasive procedure that blocks the blood supply to fibroids, which causes fibroids to shrink over six months. UFE is clinically proven to reduce the major symptoms of fibroids, including pain, excessive and prolonged bleeding and frequent urination in over 80% of cases.
Surgical Treatment Options for Uterine Fibroids
For women with the most severe symptoms or very large fibroids, surgical removal of the fibroids may be the best solution. Robot-Assisted Laparoscopic Myomectomy Cleveland Clinic Florida specializes in the latest minimally invasive technique, called robot-assisted laparoscopic myomectomy, a breakthrough approach that allows for the selective removal of fibroids. Using this approach, fibroids are removed through five small keyhole incisions. This treatment offers faster recovery time than an abdominal myomectomy and preserves the uterus allowing for future pregnancies. Symptoms such as pressure and heavy bleeding can be eliminated or reduced after the fibroids are removed. Laparoscopic Myomectomy Fibroids can also be removed with an advanced laparoscopy. This is performed with four small incisions and without the use of robotic equipment. Typically patients go home the same day with a two-week recovery. Laparoscopic Hysterectomy In cases that call for a hysterectomy, a minimally invasive approach called a laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy is available. In this type of hysterectomy, doctors insert a thin, lighted telescope-like instrument called a laparoscope and other small surgical instruments into the navel and abdomen. Cleveland Clinic Florida surgeons can perform the laparoscopic hysterectomy though only one incision instead of the typical three to four incisions. A laparoscope acts like a video camera, guiding the surgeon as they carefully remove the uterus (womb) through the opening. In a laparoscopic hysterectomy, the cervix, the bottom part of the uterus, may be left intact.
How Should the Right Treatment Be Selected?
Every life deserves world class care.
The decision to pursue a specific treatment option should be made after a consultation with a physician, and a full evaluation of symptoms and medical history.

look and Feel Great! By Dr. JeAN-clAUDe Nerette
I
t’s time you look and feel your best. Unfortunately, as we age and enter our 30’s our hormones are in a downward decline, making it more difficult to stay fit and look young. It is believed that our hormone levels decrease by approximately five percent every year after the age of 30. Considering that testosterone is responsible for building lean body mass and muscle, it is no surprise that it is harder and harder to stay in shape as we grow older - even with a good diet and workout routine. The good news is that there is a way to overcome this downward spiral of hormone levels. Testosterone is not a hormone only for men, but also females. Even though females have approximately ten percent of the amount of testosterone than that of men, it plays such a big role in mental and physical well being. When testosterone levels drop, people may have symptoms of mental cloudiness, low sex drive, no energy and gaining weight in the mid-section. The replacement of testosterone may be in the form of gels, creams, injections or pellets. The most physiologic way to replace testosterone is by means of Sotopelle therapy. Sotopelle therapy involves a simple procedure where the bio-identical hormone testosterone is placed directly under the skin by a medical doctor to allow the slow release of hormones, avoiding the peaks and troughs as seen with the other methods. The body simply takes the hormones as it needs them. Through Sotopelle therapy, the bio-identical hormones last approximately three to six months. Most individuals experience an almost immediate relief of symptoms of mental cloudiness, fatigue and no energy; however, for some it can take up to two weeks. When testosterone is rebalanced to the optimal levels, as you were in your 20’s, workouts begin to show better results in muscle definition by increasing lean body mass. Testosterone is just one of the few hormones that may be replaced through Sottopelle Therapy. Estrogen (estradiol), for example, plays a big role in looking younger and is sometimes considered the “fountain of youth” as the skin improves with more elasticity and less dryness. Estradiol is the estrogen that is cardio protective unlike the synthetic derivatives that are composed primarily of Estrogen. Estrone has not only been proven to cause an increase in heart disease, but also ovarian cancers. To determine if you are a candidate for Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy, a comprehensive medical history, physical exam and evaluation of hormone levels obtained by blood will determine your unique clinical picture. The Inch Loss System is another new treatment on the horizon to help you look your best and get rid of those troublesome fatty areas, such as the love handles, belly pouch and fat around the bra strap. The Inch Loss System uses nano-technology to create muscle contractions without pain or sweating. The muscles are contracted involuntarily through the inch loss machine causing tightening and shrinking of muscle fibers resulting in inch loss. The Inch Loss system has a diuretic effect as well as stimulating the removal of waste products through its inherent lymphatic drainage which assists in riding the body of excess fluid. Bodily circulation is greatly improved and notable results in cellulite reduction have been reported. There is no glucose burn which results in very little lactic acid being released, so there is no muscle soreness after an inch loss system workout. It is not unusual to have up to one inch loss with each treatment. To enhance the results of the Inch Loss System, it is common to use a combination of therapies, especially Mesotherapy. Mesotherapy is used on specific targets areas where your body stores excessive fat. It assists your body in breaking down existing stored fat cells through a formulated mix of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. The mixture is injected into the fat and connective tissue which make up the middle layer of skin called the mesoderm. Mesotherapy is an in-office procedure and requires no anesthesia or downtime. The Inch Loss combined with Mesotherapy has a synergistic effect as Mesotherapy helps break down the fat cells as the Inch Loss System assists in ridding the body of the excess fat by increasing circulation

cience projects have come a long way from building a homemade volcano or watching mold grow on bread. Today’s students are investigating ways to improve their world. Some students are even inspired to take action. Concerned about the growing problem of beach erosion, Matt Carlton, Rodrigo Guttierez and Sam Portnoy studied how sea oats prevent erosion along South Florida shorelines. The three former fifth graders at Indian Trace Elementary School began by visiting the beach to survey the erosion problem. Then they did hands-on erosion experiments using a model they built. They found that grassy plants help keep the sand from eroding. The boys discovered that Uniola paniculata, commonly known as sea oats, help stabilize sandy soil with their long root system while the plant’s tall, lean blades stop sand from blowing inland. The sand, stopped in flight, falls and builds the dune that protects the beach against strong waves and heavy wind. Inspired by their findings, two of the boys took action and actually helped plant sea oats along the South Florida shoreline. Under the guidance of the Kids Ecology Corps, Matt and Rodrigo spent one Saturday planting sea oats in front of the Renaissance on the Ocean in Hollywood. Together, they planted over 100 sea oats along one section of the sand dune. The boys say this experience was eye-opening. It made them very much aware of the growing problem our South Florida shorelines are facing with beach erosion.

selves experts or specialists,” explains Blandon of the Blandon Law firm. “Since immigration is 100% of my practice, I wanted potential clients to know that I am an expert.” This expertise is particularly important in the complicated matters of immigration. “It affects not only clients but also their children and all descendents. Clients should choose an attorney with the same care they choose a physician,” cautions Blandon. Board Certification assures clients that their case will be handled by a consummate professional who cares enough to study the law carefully. In order to earn Board Certification in a particular field of law, an attorney must pass a rigorous exam. Blandon says she prepared by studying the core books for immigration, one of which was 1,300 pages long, and preparing over 350 flash cards. Board Certification is the highest level of evaluation by The Florida Bar. It recognizes attorneys’ special knowledge, skills and proficiency in various areas of law, as well as professionalism and ethics in practice. Only 56 Florida attorneys are Board Certified in immigration. The Florida Bar also offers certification in 23 other fields of law.

an you imagine the joy of waking up in the morning and being able to see without the aid of glasses or daily wear contacts? Orthokeratology, the reshaping of one’s cornea with contact lenses to improve vision isn’t new. It has been practiced by some eye doctors for decades. It wasn’t until recently, with technological advancements in the procedure, that it was possible to achieve reduction of myopia in a matter of hours. The flattening of the cornea is effective for both children and adults. Surgery is not an option for children or for those whose vision is changing, nor does it stop the progression of myopia. Orthokeratology is achieved in a unique way. While you sleep, these therapeutic lenses gently change the front curvature of your eye or cornea. The process improves vision rapidly. One very pleased patient wrote: “What a great way to improve vision without surgery. I wore my lenses for a week and what a difference it has made in my natural vision and correcting my near-sightedness. I can go all day without the help of glasses or contact lenses.”
During the procedure, the eye is flattened and retains the flattened contour for a period of time; this process is referred to as corneal molding. The mold is a specially designed contact lens. The lens is somewhat larger than a standard lens, but not very different in appearance, and comfort is generally excellent. Orthokeratology is not only an excellent alternative to the wearing of spectacles, but it also frees the individual from the distractions caused by perspiration, dust, wind, weather and temperature. When a patient undergoes lasik, the procedure requires that a flap is cut in the cornea. Regardless of the method used to cut the flap, this process severs nerves that regulate tear flow. This often leads to dry eye syndrome that can be discomforting. Unlike lasik surgery, orthokeratology is completely reversible, so if you decide at a later point that you want to undergo surgery, you can do just that. Why not free yourself from your glasses and contacts the affordable way? Back to School, Back to insanity By AliNA GASteSi-De ArmAS, mA, meD, lmHc
A
ugust is a very important month in South Florida, especially for our busy families. If your family is anything like mine, summer was full of activities; fun, leisure and togetherness. As school approaches the demands for structure, hard work and individual achievements take precedence. As a result one popular theme of distress I hear from my friends and my patients is “How do I get it all done?”; “How do I keep up?”; “How do I hang in there?” The stress of the school year must be dealt with differently. We cannot continue to run at breakneck speed without it catching up with our bodies and our psyche. The balance we need to succeed is found within. It is neither in “getting everything done” nor in “just hanging in there.” It comes from our connection to ourselves, our families and our world. The peace, joy and harmony you feel in the summer is not about the heat or leisure, it’s about the connections you make with your spouse, your family and nature. The truth is that during the school year we are going to be torn in a million different directions as well as there are going to be countless demands placed on us by coaches, bosses and other outside influences. Our to-do lists are going to get longer, our email boxes are going to be full and we are just not going to get everything done. You see, in order to wipe your to-do list clean, respond to every email and get “everything done” we would need no less than six to ten extra hours in the day that we do not have. It’s just not going to happen. So how do we deal with the stress, guilt, and pressure of perfection? We begin by measuring success differently. No, we do not stop trying to “get it all done” we just stop beating ourselves up when it doesn’t happen. Successful families and individuals are better measured in terms of connections. This is not a new concept but one that needs to be renewed each year as we return to the hustle and hassle that are our lives in suburbia. In 1991, at the commencement ceremony of Wellesley College in Massachusetts, Former First Lady of the United States, Barbara Bush, told young graduates, their family and friends: “…a choice that must not be missed is to cherish your human connections: your relationships with friends and family. For several years, you’ve had impressed upon you the importance to your career of dedication and hard work. This is true, but as important as your obligations as a doctor, lawyer or business leader will be, you are a human being first and those human connections — with spouses, with children, with friends — are the most important investments you will ever make. At the end of your life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict or not closing one more deal. You will regret time not spent with a husband, a friend, a child or a parent…” Connections help keep us balanced. Take time to create daily family rituals which foster and/or enhance relationships. A minor change like turning off the radio during a drive, having a no talking/texting time to talk to each other, or sitting down to share at least a snack together may be enough time to keep communication lines open within your family. Family connections are easily achieved by traditions. Start a game night, book club, cooking class with everyone involved. These are but a few suggestions to help you stay connected through this new school year. If your family is feeling disconnected and frazzled call Alina Gastesi-de Armas, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Florida Supreme Court Mediator and Parent Coordinator at A Place for Growth. For more information, please call 954-2576393 or visit www.APlaceforGrowth.com.

yoga Helps to reduce Stress By FABieNNe c. GroSSmAN, rD/lD

veryone has stress in his or her life. A hectic lifestyle attributes to much of this stress, between our busy family life, kids’ activities, work situation or lack thereof. No matter what is going on, we all suffer from some degree of stress. So how can we handle all the stress in our life?
We must first take into account what we can and cannot change to help our situation. We must also realize there are tools we can use day to day to help us cope with our stress, if not relieve our stressful situation. Stress has been known to cause a variety of health problems such as high blood pressure, anxiety and weight gain, to name a few. Yoga is one way to help manage stress as well as other health ailments. Medical research has proven that with regular yoga practice one can boost their immune system, regulate their blood pressure, relieve back and arthritis pain, increase muscle and reduce fat, as well as reduce stress and tension. Yoga not only helps improve our physical health but our mental health as well. Yoga will not change a stressful situation, but it can help by giving us tools that can be used to handle our stress so the stress does not consume us or negatively affect our health. Yoga will also help improve flexibility, strength, and balance in addition to overall health. Your first thought when it comes to yoga may be: “I am not flexible enough to do yoga.” You do not need to be flexible to do yoga. By just having your body do the physical postures, to the best of your ability, your body receives the benefits. Keep in mind that there are many different types of yoga styles to try depending on your physical abilities and concerns. Hatha Yoga is a good place for anyone to begin. Hatha helps balance the body and mind via physical postures (asanas), pranayama (breathing techniques) and meditation. Each time you do your yoga practice you feel different. Some days you will be able to do the pose great and other days not so much. During some yoga practices your balancing poses can be held longer and other times you will fall out of them in one breath. With each yoga practice you learn a little about yourself.

Yoga helps you “on and off” the mat to become aware, acknowledge and accept. By doing the physical postures we reduce stress and tension from our body. The breathing techniques learned in yoga class can be used in life to calm the mind when things are not going our way. The meditation helps us reflect and change the negative thoughts to positive ones in order for us to improve our state of mind, which often improves our state of health. For more information about starting a yoga practice call Weston Yoga at 954349-6868 or visit: www.westonyoga.com. haute hair Keratin Straightening treatments and Brazilian Blow-Dries explained By HeleN cHArleS
W
hether you have straight or curly hair, fighting frizz is a major battle. Humidity, air conditioning and other environmental factors mean that most of us suffer from frizz at some point.
In the last few years, a new wave of services in salons promised to eliminate the dreaded fluffiness and replace it with soft, smooth, defined hair. There are many names for these services, such as Brazilian Blow-out, Keratin smoothing treatments or permanent blow dry – and there is also a host of myths surrounding what happens and how. In this article I will debunk some of the myths we hairdressers hear with answers from the manufacturers of these products.
Myth: Smoothing treatments can damage the hair. Truth: Keratin-based smoothing treatment is exactly what the name suggests – a
treatment. It is not a chemical service. The secondary benefit of this service is that it smoothes, softens and eliminates frizz, as a result, provides fantastic hair manageability. In fact the more treatments a client has, the better the condition of her hair because it will be fully infused with keratin, which repairs damaged areas with the actual protein of the hair. Any possible damage can only occur by the way the service is carried out. All professional salons that offer this service are certified through intensive training and this certification enables the hairdresser to carry out the exact procedure without damage.
Myth: The treatments contain harmful chemicals. Truth: Some treatments do contain formaldehyde. However, most varieties used in professional salons do not contain more than 0.2% of the treatment. Many of these treatments contain urea, which when heated, releases a form of aldehyde. If you are still not sure ask to see a breakdown of the ingredients which is always available from the manufacturer of the product.
Myth: Smoothing treatments will cause color to fade. Truth: Traditional straightening systems that were sodium hydroxide or thio-based
generally cause some degree of color fade. The new technology and science behind keratin systems has minimized this problem. Products with higher percentage of formaldehyde and too high levels of heat applied will slightly increase this issue. However, there are many amazing color remedies available after these treatments that will eliminate any fade and use of correct shampoo and conditioners will help.
Myth: It is high maintenance. Truth: It is exactly the opposite, providing you use the right aftercare products.
Products with keratin ingredients will work alongside the keratin in the treatment, so ensure you use products which contain keratin element, at least once a week. The rest of the time, we recommend using a sodium chloride-free shampoo. With use of correct products hair is much more manageable and a quick blow out should be sufficient to maintain a groomed, frizz free look for a duration of three to four months.

health & wellness cleveland clinic’s Bariatric and metabolic institute receives re-Accreditation By StAcey BomSer
T
he Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at Cleveland Clinic Florida has been re-accredited as a Level 1b facility by the Bariatric Surgery Center Network Accreditation Program of the American College of Surgeons. Accreditation provides confirmation that the Weston hospital’s bariatric surgery center has demonstrated its commitment to providing the highest quality of care for its bariatric surgery patients. Accredited bariatric surgery centers provide not only the hospital resources necessary for optimal care of morbidly obese patients, but also the support and resources that are necessary to address the entire spectrum of care and needs of bariatric patients, from the pre-hospital phase through the postoperative care. “Doctors Raul Rosenthal and Samuel Szomstein and their entire team have once again achieved the highest level of recognition within the medical community for excellence in weight-loss surgery,” states Bernie Fernandez, MD, chief executive officer of Cleveland Clinic Florida, adding that “the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute brings together a Raul Rosenthal, MD multidisciplinary team of surgeons, psy-
chologists, and registered dieticians who work to guide patients through a weightloss journey that begins with surgery.” Since the creation of the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at Cleveland Clinic Florida in July 2001, Drs. Rosenthal and Szomstein have collectively performed more than 3,500 bariatric procedures. In addition to their busy surgical practice, they have trained 33 fellows and hosted numerous visiting surgeons from all over the world. The doctors have also published more than 180 articles in various peer reviewed medical and surgical journals based on research performed at the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute. Cleveland Clinic’s Bariatric and Samuel Szomstein, MD Metabolic Institute was the first hospital-based weight-loss surgery program in Florida to earn Level 1 accreditation from the Bariatric Surgery Center Network Accreditation Program in 2007. The Institute is one of only a few in the state to also have achieved accreditation as a Center of Excellence by the Surgical Review Corporation of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery.

ou’ve heard of the rat race and many of you live it. Success in this race is measured by how much we can accomplish at warp speed defying the normal human constraints of time and energy. Although I am a participant in this race my quest is different. My measure of success is my ability to keep my head above water. I struggle in this race as I run it neck in neck, but miraculously somehow I stay in the race. I am the participant, a.k.a., “The Working Mom. There are days when I long for the next pit stop where I can pause for a minute, stretch my legs and rest before charging on in the race. In reality, these pit stops are few and far between. There are times when I am just about to throw in the towel, when out of nowhere a pit stop pops up, like a mirage, and provides the opportunity to bring me back from the brink of insanity. I may stumble, but I continue to run the race. Why? I have no choice. Dropping out is not an option. What often looks like a smooth stretch ends up with unexpected twists and turns that require incredible focus and discipline. Some days I feel like I hit every possible obstacle on the course. I make a wrong turn. I trip over a few rocks in my path that throw me off balance. Another participant, a.k.a. “guilt, tries to run me off track. Sometimes I feel the wind at my back propelling me ahead, but more often I find myself struggling against the wind while running uphill. Those who challenge the difficulty of the race run by “The Working Mom must
run the race in her shoes to experience the endurance it requires. It is all encompassing. It requires not only the endurance for a 9 to 5 but a 24/7 on call position. Last minute projects, shopping lists, sports practice, preparing dinner and school lunches are just a few after hour obligations. Mom must also be a psychologist, teacher, playmate and romancer once she arrives home. There is no quitting when she grows tired. On most days, there is no finish line in sight but she needs to continue running to reach it. Participation requires a constant source of energy even when the resources are depleted. No excuses. So even though today I am running on empty and longing for rest, I keep on running. Sometimes I look to the sides of the road and my family isn’t cheering me on. Somehow though they seem to sense the times when I need it most and they start cheering. At these moments, I look at my children’s encouraging faces and see pride. I realize that I am teaching them that even though balancing life can be a struggle we can all find the strength to continue on and accomplish anything we want to accomplish. I know that through example, I will pass this strength on to them. This acknowledgement gives meaning to my race, and provides me with the fuel to keep on running. it’s their business lindstrom Air conditioning launches “intensive Air” Program
T
his summer has been a scorcher in South Florida. Air conditioning units have truly been put to the test. Not a day goes by when you don’t see at least one Lindstrom Air Conditioning truck driving through your neighborhood on the way to provide some much needed relief to weary Weston homeowners.
It was while answering many of these calls for emergency service, from all over South Florida, that the company recognized a real need to provide relief to those in need. Now Lindstrom Air is launching its “Intensive Air” program, which will provide a brand new air conditioning system to some of South Florida’s most deserving families. “We’ve been serving South Florida for over 30 years and the Intensive Air program is our way to find people that really need help,” says Joe Canosa, General Manager of Lindstrom Air Conditioning. “It allows us the opportunity to give back to the communities that we live and serve in.” Lindstrom Air, together with the Trane Corporation and WPLGTV, are looking for individuals who are unemployed, on a fixed income or just simply in need of a little help. People can nominate themselves, or a loved one, to receive a free central air conditioning system professionally installed by Lindstrom Air Conditioning. The Intensive Air program will run through October. One lucky winner will receive a brand new system this month and another will be chosen in October. Nominations can be made online at www.wplg.com or by mailing a letter to the WPLG TV station at Local 10, West Hallandale Beach Boulevard, Pembroke Park, Florida, 33023. It’s not surprising that Lindstrom Air spearheaded this campaign. The family-owned and operated company has been committed to serving South Florida since 1975. Back then, Company Founder Carl Lindstrom drove an old station wagon, just big enough to carry his tools and basic supplies. Today, Lindstrom Air has more than 130 professionally-trained team members and a fleet of fullyequipped service vehicles, but the company still lives by the tradi-

They were excellent to work with, courteous, competent and cleaned up after themselves. We will not only use them in the future but will recommend them to others,” says Juan G. “The technicians were competent, well-trained and courteous. They did a great job and I would recommend them to my friends and family!” states Rafael M. “Our experience when dealing with Lindstrom Air was wonderful! Our air conditioning went out and we needed help immediately. Thankfully, Lindstrom was there to help us out. Everyone was extremely polite and the crew of installers were awesome!” says Michelle C. Lindstrom Air Conditioning is there when you need it. The company offers 24-hour emergency service, seven days a week. All service is provided by the company’s certified technicians. In addition to extensive training, every Lindstrom employee undergoes a thorough background check, including drug screening, and must abide by the company’s strict code of ethics. And, rest assured, after over three decades of business, the company will be around to answer your calls before and after your work is completed. Lindstrom Air Conditioning installs the best brands in the business, many of which qualify for the Federal Tax Credit. The company also services all makes and models. online shopping can you trust e-commerce and ebay? By liSA FelDmAN, JUSt Sell it
▸ Never enter sensitive personal information (such as your password or credit card, bank account, and Social Security numbers) in an email. Stay safe online by protecting your passwords. Whether online or offline, care for your password as you would care for the key to your house. If your password falls into the wrong hands, your identity may be stolen and someone else can access your account. eBay offers the following tips for password protection: ▸ Make sure to create a different password for each online account you hold. ▸ Create a more secure password by using a combination of letters and numbers. ▸ Change your password often. ▸ Don’t share your password with anyone. ▸ If you are signing in to eBay, only enter your password at a URL that begins with https://signin.ebay.com/
▸ Download and use eBay Toolbar with Account Guard, a feature that indicates whether you are on the real eBay or PayPal websites, or on a potential spoof site.

any people I meet often tell me about bad online buying experiences and that they are nervous about eBay and other such E-Commerce sites. Well, there is reason to be concerned. However, when properly informed how to protect yourself, you can have safe and successful web buying experiences. Here are just a few ideas on how to safely trade online. First, stay safe online by safeguarding your computer against viruses. There are numerous viruses in circulation that threaten to damage your computer or spy on your internet activities. There is no foolproof way to protect your computer, but you can help minimize your risk by installing virus and spyware protection software. Install it and use it often. When using eBay, or any website, protect yourself from spoof (fake) emails and websites. Spoof emails and websites can be a major problem for unsuspecting Internet users. Claiming to be sent by a well-known company, spoof email directs users to websites asking for personal information such as a credit card number, Social Security number, or account password. No legitimate site will email you and ask for this personal information, so do not click links and give it out. Because it is so difficult to tell when an email or website is a spoof, eBay recommends that you:

pruce up your home with one call to JRL Carpentry & Painting. This Westonbased company specializes in those little projects, such as crown molding, attic access ladders, painting and pressure cleaning, that can make a huge difference in the appearance of your home. The company has been faithfully serving the Weston community for over ten years. “One of the reasons we’ve been so successful is our commitment to customer service,” states licensed contractor and longtime Weston resident Barry Zuckerman, owner of JRL Carpentry & Painting. “We strive to make this experience easy and pleasant. We show up on time and finish on time and on budget.” No wonder clients rave about JRL. Here’s what some satisfied customers are saying: “I didn’t think there were any honest and reliable contractors until we worked with JRL.” and “It’s not often I come across a business that I really enjoy working with. It was a pleasure to deal with JRL.” Zuckerman offers a lengthy list of references, but chances are you’ve seen Zuckerman or one of his crews at work in your neighborhood. The hands-on owner is checking jobsites at least once a day, if not actually doing the project himself. He believes in the pride of doing a job and doing it right. “I’m a perfectionist. I tend to worry more about the job than the homeowner. That’s why we only do a few things, but we do them well.” JRL has developed a reputation as the company to call for crown molding. It also offers other carpentry services such as baseboards, chair rail, window casing and decorative framing. The company provides free, in-home estimates. “We’ll come to your house, take measurements, show you product samples, provide design advice, and come up with a plan and price on the spot,” states Zuckerman. And the prices are all-inclusive. “Our fee includes labor, material, priming, sanding, and two coats of premium paint,” says Zuckerman. “We’ll move the furniture before we start and sweep up and move the furniture back once we’re done. need to do is sit back, relax and watch our skilled craftsmen add this elegant touch to your room.” And the best part is, you don’t pay until the job is completed to your satisfaction. JRL requires no deposit and all work is guaranteed. That includes all carpentry and painting services. The company specializes in interior and exterior painting, as well as pressure cleaning. “Weston residents will be happy to know that we can match any pre-approved house color,” notes Zuckerman, who can also help facilitate the paint approval process with homeowners associations. Another JRL Carpentry & Painting service is installing attic access ladders. “If you need more space to store your stuff, consider adding an attic ladder,” suggests Zuckerman. “It provides easy access to hundreds of square feet of storage space.” In addition to the traditional garage attic access system, JRL also offers the Televator telescoping attic ladder. It’s a pull-down staircase designed specifically for interior attic access such as through a bedroom closet. JRL attic access ladders start at $325, including labor and material. JRL Carpentry & Painting is properly licensed and insured in Broward County. To schedule a free, in-home estimate, call Barry Zuckerman at (954) 384-6520. tee to green
Honing your mental Approach
DeAN SKlAr, PGA ProFeSSioNAl
I
n our fast paced society we constantly are rushing through our day wondering where the time went. This is also true once we get to the golf course. We try to hit a few balls, throw down a few balls on the putting green, take a few quick stretches, and then rush off to the first tee. Most golfers don’t even warm up on the putting green before they tee off as they are more focused on warming up their swing. It is actually the putting green where we need to place more emphasis on warming up to develop “feel” before we start playing. Start developing “feel” using a putting sequence to help better understand how to phase your focus from mechanics to playing to a target. This sequence is a threestage process. First, focus on mechanics. You should hit some putts while your mind observes the movements during the stroke. You should feel the stroke, but not have a target that would distract your focus. Second, focus on distance control. Try and complete variable distance drills with three to six balls; each ball should go longer or shorter than the previous ball. Then make rehearsal strokes, looking at your target and feeling the energy needed for proper distance. This drill should be done uphill, downhill, level and from different distances. Finally, focus on the target by evaluating the putt. Choose an aiming point and commit to the decision. Make multiple rehearsal strokes looking at the aiming point, feeling the energy needed for perfect distance. Now you are ready to execute the stroke with confidence. The principles of the putting routine can be carried over into every possible shot a golfer could potentially face on the course. In addition to improving your putting, now you have a template to utilize on other shots and a better understanding of how to approach the game. I have found that when using these drills you will see dramatic improvement in your game.

When is Immigration Reform going to become a law?
By evAN H. BAroN, PA
S
everal changes to alimony and child support have been passed by the Florida legislature and approved by the Governor this past year. The changes affecting alimony became law on July 1, 2010. The child support changes will not become effective until October 1, 2010. These revisions to our existing laws are in some cases merely a codification of certain principles we have been following based upon interpretation by the courts. In other instances the changes are somewhat substantial. I will focus on the alimony revisions, since these changes are now law and apply to any dissolution filed after July 1, 2010. The statute does indicate that these changes cannot be a basis for a modification of an existing alimony award prior to July 1, 2010.
There are now listed four different types of alimony awards. They are: rehabilitative alimony, permanent alimony, bridge the gap alimony and durational alimony. Bridge the gap and durational alimony are two new forms of alimony that are officially recognized in the law. Prior to these changes, alimony awards consistent with the terms of durational or bridge the gap were often still being implemented in cases, but were not necessarily recognized by statute. The new law has also defined certain areas in an attempt to clear up any confusion or ambiguities and limit certain discretion of the courts. There is now a rebuttable presumption (one that can still be overcome with credible evidence) as to how a marriage is defined based upon the length of marriage. The following is now presumed:
SHORT TERM MARRIAGE is less than 7 years. MODERATE TERM MARRIAGE is greater than 7 years but less than 17. LONG TERM MARRIAGE is greater than 17 years. The length of marriage is determined from the date of marriage until the date of the filing of an action for a Dissolution of Marriage. It appears that the date of separation is not going to be a factor in determining the length of a marriage. The following are the two new additional “types” of alimony:
BRIDGE THE GAP ALIMONY is defined as an award of support to assist a
party in making a transition from being married to being single and cannot exceed 2 years in duration. In addition, this award of alimony cannot be modified as to either the amount or the duration of time.
C
hanges in the law will come about when Congress has the necessary votes. During a speech on July 1st, President Obama explained it this way: “Under the pressures of partisanship and election-year politics, many of the eleven Republican senators who voted for reform in the past have now backed away from their previous support.” Fortunately, both political parties recognize that changing the immigration law is important to a growing section of voters. According to The Washington Post, nearly one in five Congressional Districts has a Latino population that is at least a quarter of the district: “Between 2000 and 2008, Latino voter registration grew 54 percent and turnout grew 64 percent.” According to a study reported in the same newspaper, immigration reform was a key factor in influencing these voters’ choices for political office in 2008. The majority of Latino voters supported President Obama. The growing Latino voting population is believed to be a major reason for the push for immigration reform before the mid-term elections, which will be on November 2, 2010.
“The single most important thing you can do for yourself and your family members today, even before the bill becomes a law, is apply with Immigration.” What can I do now to benefit from a future law?
Both political parties make a strong difference between foreigners who have already filed petitions with the Citizenship and Immigration Service and those who have not. As President Obama said, “The presence of so many illegal immigrants makes a mockery of all those who are going through the process of immigrating legally.” Past immigration laws have given more benefits to persons with filed petitions, such as those sponsored by family members or employers. The single most important thing you can do for yourself and your family members today, even before the bill becomes a law, is apply with Immigration.
Do I need an attorney?
PERMANENT ALIMONY will be
Although applications seem simple to fill out, an immigration attorney does much more than complete a form. This attorney is Board Certified as an immigration expert and is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association. Because I am constantly updated on changes in immigration, I call clients and let them know as soon as they can apply for legal permanent residency. I also help them prepare the evidence they need for their case. For one client, he was denied when he filed by himself. Using the same evidence, but organized differently and sent with an easy-tounderstand explanation, Immigration approved his green card.
I just touched upon the significant changes which have taken place. There are numerous other changes which I have not addressed. If you have any questions please feel free to contact my office at 954 385-9160 to discuss this further.

DURATIONAL ALIMONY may be awarded when permanent alimony is inap-
propriate. It will be awarded for marriages of either short or moderate duration, provided that a party has the need for economic assistance. This award may not exceed the length of the marriage. For the most part, with limited exceptions, awarded in a long term marriage.

How you can tell if you Have Been a victim of Predatory lending Practices By omAr J. ArciA, eSQ., ForecloSUre DeFeNSe AND coNSUmer BANKrUPtcy ProtectioN AttorNey
P
redatory lending is when a lender imposes abusive, unfair and sometimes illegal loan terms on borrowers, without regard for the borrower’s ability to repay the loan. When two or more of the following factors are contained in a mortgage loan transaction, the subsequent forensic audit performed on that transaction usually reveals serious violations of federal and state lending laws.
Property Purchased or Refinanced Between 2003 and 2007.
This four year period marked the peak of the real estate boom in South Florida. Just about anyone, including foreign nationals without any past credit history, could obtain a “sub-prime” loan for all the value of the mortgaged property. The sub-prime mortgage market thrived during this time, allowing borrowers to encumber their properties well beyond their true market values.
Mortgage Loan Contains an Adjustable Rate or “ARM” Feature.
These types of loans are initially set at an artificially low interest rate for a brief period of time. They then switch to an adjustable rate for the remaining term of the loan, and the rate can increase as often as every six months. Even if the U.S. interest rate index remains unchanged, the monthly payments on these loans could increase by up to 50%. These loans have the highest delinquency rate of any other loan product.
Mortgage Loan Suffers from Negative Amortization.
Negative amortization occurs when the monthly mortgage payment is not sufficient to even cover the interest due, and therefore, the balance of the loan increases over time even though payments have been made. If you owe more today on your home loan, than when you originally purchased or refinanced, your loan is negatively amortized.
Mortgage Loan Is Interest-Only or Pick-a-Payment.
Under these types of loans, the borrower is only required to pay the interest due on the loan or some other minimal payment that does not even cover the interest on the loan. After a few years, the required monthly payment is usually increased to cover the outstanding balance. Once the loan payment is increased, so does the likelihood the borrower will default, and eventually be subjected to foreclosure.
Mortgage Loan Approval Based Only on Stated Income.
Roughly half of all sub-prime borrowers from 2003-2007 were given “stated income” loans, in which they were qualified based on statements in the loan application as to their income. These statements of income were largely unverified, and often the “stated income” required for the loan to be approved was the exact amount included in the application by the mortgage broker. If any of these factors apply to your current loan, you should at least have a professional forensic audit performed to find out whether you have any viable claims against your lender. If your claims are timely raised, you may be entitled to reduce the amount you owe, or cancel the loan obligation altogether. A more detailed explanation of these factors, as well as, key foreclosure defense strategies is discussed during a live seminar offered by the Arcia Law Firm once a month. During the Saturday seminar, you can also receive a free preliminary analysis of your loan documents by experienced forensic auditors that will be on site. To find out more about upcoming seminars times and dates, and to register, you can visit www.arcialawfirm.com/seminar or www.arcialawfirm.com/seminario for the Spanish version. When registering, mention you heard about this seminar through Our City Weston or Town Times magazine, and you will receive two complimentary admission tickets.

s the summer winds to a close, it’s time to start thinking about the upcoming school year. One way to start school off on the right foot is to provide your growing child with a proper study environment. Set the bedroom up with the equipment and furnishings to put them on the path to success.
If you haven’t done a bedroom make-over since your children were young, it will be worth the investment. They will be (or at least should be) spending a lot of time in their bedroom studying. Having stuffed animals or Legos cluttering their space will not only clutter their thinking, it will subconsciously keep them thinking like a little kid. Now is the time you want them to start thinking like a student. Start with spring cleaning and get rid of the clutter. This is not to say they can’t have any mementos or decorative items, just keep it to a minimum. Select the top five childhood memories and pack up the rest. Next, take a good look at the existing furniture. If items are broken or in bad shape, it would be wise to replace them with more updated and functional furnishings. With the amount of technology needed today, it’s mandatory to have the correct set up for a laptop, printer and other required items. This is not a luxury, but a necessity.
D
o you have big, beautiful windows with a gorgeous view, but the sun beats in? What can you do? Silhouettes are for you. The BEFORE and AFTER pictures tell the whole story. In the BEFORE picture, see how bleached the carpet is. Notice how the glare is washing out the entire room. Without any window coverings, your flooring, upholstery, and artwork are going to fade. You will also lose a lot of energy and your FPL bill will rise. The heat index in that room with bare windows is unbearable with our Florida heat. Hunter Douglas Silhouettes were introduced in 1991. They are so popular because they offer superior ultraviolet protection in 88 beautiful fabrics and applications. Maintenance is easy because they are made from soil-resistant fabrics. You can get these blinds in Specialty shapes like arches. See the AFTER picture. They create a formal look that bathes the room in a soft glow. The incoming light is filtered by two layers of soft sheer. You can see in the AFTER picture how cozy the room looks and what a great view you still have. When you need privacy simply tilt the blind closed. Visit the Beautiful Windows showroom where we have full-sized Silhouettes in various colors and room darkening options available for you. The Silhouettes can be motorized for those high, hard to reach windows. We can even do 10 ft. x 10 ft. windows with one shade!!! Check us out right now and see how you can get back $50 per Silhouette. Hurry time is running out on this offer! BEFORE
Many stores have entire areas devoted to setting up dorm rooms. These can serve as inspiration and guidance to your needs. If your furnishings are in good shape, think about adding storage and organizational items. Plastic units with drawers and decorative boxes come in an array of colors. Color and emotions are intricately linked, so choose colors that set the mood you want. Here are some tips to think about when choosing colors for your child’s room. Blue and green promote psychological sensations of calmness, peace, and tranquility, which may be what the student needs after a long day of classes. The color red evokes feelings of excitement, and the color yellow evokes cheerfulness. Be mindful not to use too much of either color without balancing it with a neutral, this might cross the line between cheerful and tacky.

Aside from a good bed, remember to update the mattress. A mattress only lasts for ten to 15 years maximum. Older children, as well as young ones, need a good night’s sleep. It’s also important to provide your children with a comfortable desk chair along with a good desk lamp. With the bedroom set-up for learning, you’ve provided your children with the proper working environment to succeed. meet School Board candidate lynn Simon
L
ynn Simon is a fighter. She beat breast cancer. Now, she is battling for the District 6 seat on the Broward County School Board. She is determined to make a difference for her two children, Mia and Kevin, and all of the Weston children attending public schools. Simon has been an active school volunteer for many years, serving on the PTA, PTSA and SAC committees, in addition to donating many hours as a high school debate judge. It’s through these experiences that she realized her passion for education. Simon is currently pursuing her teaching degree at Broward College. If elected to the School Board, Simon would like to initiate changes not just for the children, but for teachers as well. “Teachers need to not fear for their jobs every year,” she explains. “We don’t want to be here five or ten years from now wondering how to get good teachers to teach here in Broward.” Simon is also concerned about the mismanagement of funds and fraud in our public schools. If elected, she will share the fiscal expertise she has garnered as the owner of Suncoast Hospitality, a local company with locations throughout the tri-county area. She is also committed to maintaining the specials programs such as Arts, Music and Physical Education. “For some students, being an artist or a musician, or an athlete will be their career.”
Simon is running against incumbent Phyllis Hope for the Broward County School Board District 6 seat. Election Day is Tuesday, August 24th.

“Daisy Doolittle”
aisy is a soft-coated Wheaten Terrier mix. She is sweet and loving, but also very mellow and calm. According to her owners, she would rather sit and cuddle than run around. That’s how she got her middle name, Doolittle. Daisy just celebrated her sixth birthday. She loves going for walks and exploring her neighborhood, stopping to sniff every tree. Daisy is afraid of thunderstorms and balloons. She loves to chew her chicken-flavored bones every night before she goes to sleep. She was last seen snuggled up under her parents’ bed sound asleep next to her bone.

dining out Campania of Weston Redefines Italian
A
lthough only open a few weeks, Campania of Weston is already creating a name for itself. The restaurant is attracting attention for its classic Italian cuisine, infused with the unexpected. Here you’ll find traditional favorites such as chicken parmesan or sausage and peppers, but you’ll also find bistro dishes such as gourmet burgers and oven roasted chicken. It’s all the brainchild of Owner Stephanie Bland. She is turning the tables on traditional Italian cuisine. Bland, who literally grew up in the restaurant business, brings more than 30 years of experience to Campania of Weston. Although this is
her first restaurant in Weston, she has owned and operated several restaurants and night clubs in South Florida. It’s through these ventures that she has developed many connections, including meeting some of South Florida’s top chefs. This culinary talent is evident throughout the menu from homemade raviolis and pastas to the innovative Italian Nachos appetizer featuring fresh made chips layered in Italian sausage, olives, pepperoncinis, cherry peppers, mozzarella cheese and Alfredo sauce. The owners also added some of their personal favorites to the menu, such as the Gourmet Gorgonzola Burger or the Rustica de Carne personal-sized pizza served with grilled steak, gorgonzola cheese, artichoke hearts and caramelized onions. It’s obvious that Campania of Weston focuses on fresh food. Everything is prepared from scratch including its pastas, pizzas and sauces. From your very first bite of Campania’s delicious house bread, you know you are in for a tasty treat. Although not your typical Italian restaurant, Campania’s menu still features plenty of freshly prepared pastas and homemade pizzas cooked in the restaurant’s wood stone oven. It offers a 10-inch personal pizza, as well as a 12-inch and 16-inch for sharing. For those with hearty appetites, Campania can prepare an enormous 24-inch pizza; that’s the biggest pizza in town. “Our pizza menu may appear small, but that’s on purpose,” says Bland. “We encourage our diners to create their own specialty pies using the more than two dozen toppings we offer, everything from pepperoni to pancetta and roasted red peppers to caramelized onions.”

On Sunday nights, kids are invited to create a customized pie for just $5. Children, age 16 and under, will be given fresh pizza dough and all the toppings they need to create their perfect pizza. Bland says if “Build Your Own Pizza” night becomes popular, the restaurant may host a contest to pick the most creative pizza. This Family Night is the first of many special promotions Campania of Weston plans to introduce. The owners would like to start an “All-U-Can-Eat Mussels Night” and eventually offer a traditional Sunday Brunch, featuring fresh breakfast pizzas in addition to the typical brunch fare including carving stations, hot entrees, pastries, and more. But nowhere is the owners’ out-of-the-box thinking more evident than on the dessert menu. Of course Campania of Weston offers traditional Italian favorites such as homemade tiramisu, but it also offers a rootbeer float and an ice cream sandwich made with two freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies. The restaurant is also illustrating its uniqueness by embracing the social media sites. Facebook friends receive coupons and if you follow Campania on twitter you can receive special deals too. The restaurant’s unbelievable lunch special is available to everyone. For only $5, diners can choose between a Campania Salad, personal pizza (either cheese, pepperoni or vegetable), a chicken parmesan sandwich or a mushroom burger. Carry-out or delivery customers can enjoy two large pizzas with one-topping each for just $16.95. Campania of Weston serves lunch and dinner daily. It offers an affordable selection of unique wines, as well as Italian and domestic beers and specialty cocktail drinks. The comfortable, yet cozy, restaurant is ideal for family dinners or date night. Outdoor seating is available. Campania of Weston is located at 2203 North Commerce Parkway in the Hawthorne Suites Plaza. It is open Monday through Saturday from 11am until 9pm, and from noon until 9pm on Sunday. Campania also offers takeout and free delivery throughout Weston. To place an order or for more information, call (954) 389-0005.

rotary nEwS Rotary Club of Weston Installs New Leadership team BY ROd mCLeOd, PR & mARKetINg COmmIttee ChAIR, ROtARY CLuB Of WeStON
T
he Rotary Club of Weston’s annual rite of summer occurred recently when Larry Herman, the immediate past president of Weston Rotary, handed over the president’s gavel to incoming President Dan Young, and welcomed the 2010-2011 club leadership team. The more than 100 men and women of the Rotary Club of Weston are business owners and managers, doctors, lawyers, accountants, educators, artists, clergy, energetic retirees and, most importantly... your neighbors. Founded in 1986, the Rotary Club of Weston is our city’s first and largest community service organization. Over the past two decades Weston Rotary has awarded more than $600,000 in college scholarships to hundreds of graduating seniors from Cypress Bay and Western High Schools; young men and women of our community who have clearly demonstrated an exceptional combination of academic achievement and commitment to community service. In addition, Weston Rotary has contributed more than $500,000 to local charities, non-profit organizations, and the Rotary Foundation. The mission of Weston Rotary is centered on community service activities and focused in the areas of Services to Youth (including education, scholarship and learning development) and Services to Families In Need. The club addresses the community service needs of Weston and the Southwest Broward community through volunteerism, the application of member skills, organizational resources, and a menu of fundraising activities and events. Many Weston residents actively support Weston Rotary’s slate of annual fundraising events such as the “Run for Tomorrow & Family Festival” (formerly known as the “Rotary Holiday Run”) and the “Scholarship Golf Classic” at Weston Hills County Club. Weston Rotary also produces, in conjunction with the City of Weston, the annual “Rock & Pop Masters Free Concert in the Park” every March at the Weston Regional Park. This past year’s program was dedicated to raising funds to support the Haiti Earthquake Relief efforts. An important membership ingredient for each Weston Rotarian is the opportunity to participate in ‘hands-on’ service projects, and work with a wide-range of local organizations such as Harvest Drive, Helping Children Heal, Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center, Children’s Harbor, and the U.S. Veteran’s Administration. Weston Rotary members also provide mentoring services to the Rotary Interact Clubs at Cypress Bay and Western High Schools; and assist Rotaract Clubs at Nova Southeastern University and Broward College. The Rotary Club of Weston is a part of Rotary International, a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. There are 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries. Rotary’s primary mission is service — in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world...as signified by the motto “Service above Self”. The Rotary Club of Weston meets year-round, every Thursday morning, from 7:30 to 8:30am at Weston Hills Country Club to enjoy a buffet breakfast and a lively meeting program. For further information about Weston Rotary visit our website at www.westonrotary.org, and stop by our FaceBook Fan Page (Rotary Club of Weston) for the latest happenings.

community nEwS Police Services Academy exposes Kids to Law enforcement
A
trip to the county jail is not your typical summer camp field trip, but for students enrolled in the Youth Police Services Academy it was one of the highlight’s of their summer experience. Thirty-five Weston students between the ages of 12 and 16 took part in The Weston University – Broward Sheriff’s Office Police Services Academy this summer. In fact, so many students registered for the program that the Weston BSO had to add a second class. This was the third year Weston offered this program. The academy is funded through a grant with support from the City of Weston. Tied into the City’s sevenyear-old Weston University Program, the Youth Police Services Academy offers an extension of civics education and creates a perfect partnership. It provides students with a firsthand account of the operations of the Broward Sheriff’s Office and, specifically, how it operates as a contract agency for the City of Weston. The Police Services Academy provides an enriching, educational and exciting experience for Weston youth, while exposing them to the wonderful opportunities available in law enforcement and public service. The eightweek program, coordinated by BSO Deputy Dressing in full police gear was another Kari Pallotto, provides kids the opportunity to one of the Police Services Academy’s explore law enforcement services on an in-depth hands-on experiences.

basis with hands-on exercises. “The program allows the students to see what it is like to be a police officer and what they need to go through to become one,” explains Deputy Pallotto. “It gives them the opportunity to explore several specialized services offered by the Broward Sheriff’s Office including DUI, Defensive Tactics, CPR, K9, Patrol, Traffic, Detention, and Criminal Investigations.” For instance, the young “rookies” learned how crime scene investigaStudents enrolled in the Police Services Academy tors dust for fingerprints and how wore “beer goggles” to simulate how impairment the S.W.A.T. team trains for tactical can affect vision and distance judgment. maneuvers. The students also heard lectures on internet safety and the hazards of drunk driving. A field trip to the Joseph V. Conte Detention Facility gave students a firsthand look at our legal system in action. The “recruits” saw how inmates are processed, fingerprinted and locked in a cell. They also observed a mock trial. Another program highlight was a trip to the Broward College Institute of Public Safety Police Academy. “The Police Services Academy’s goal is to make students knowledgeable, self conscious, give them good morals and wise judgment,” explains Deputy Pallotto.

Edit SEction HEad “Selling Your Business in a Buyer’s market” BY PeteR BeRg, CBI
M
any business owners assume that now is a lousy time to sell their business. Their sales might be down over the past few years (whose isn’t?) and everyone’s heard that banks aren’t lending any money. Believe it or not, the market has never been as active as it is today. Our volume of sales is as high as it’s been since 2007. What’s driving this increase and what can you do as a potential seller to capitalize on this trend? First, understand what motivates a potential buyer and see how his buying your business can help solve that problem. Many of the professionals who were laid-off over the past two years have given up on the idea that they are going to be able to replace that lost income by going to work for someone else. High paying jobs are scarce and very competitive to get. So people have come to the realization that they need to “buy” a job and go into business for themselves. So we are seeing a wave of buyers who were formerly employed who are now looking very intently to buy a business a resume their careers. They have capital in their 401k’s which they can tap for a down payment. And, contrary to what you may read, banks are lending money to qualified buyers for qualified businesses. There are also many foreign buyers looking to obtain residency in the U.S. who are actively looking to buy a business. So what constitutes a quality business and does your business fit that profile? Just because your sales may be down doesn’t take you out of the running. Almost every business is down from 2007 levels. Your business needs to make money although there are several ways to determine your overall “Owners Benefit” which may not show up on your tax returns.
For
Having good books and records counts for a lot. Buyers are leery of sloppy accounting and an inability to properly review a business. That’s the number one deal killer. So if you aren’t already doing so, get your bookkeeping in order. If you plan on selling in the coming year then consider showing more profit this year. This can be accomplished by taking fewer personal deductions from the business. Talk with your CPA about other ways to show more profits. Yes, you’ll pay more taxes but you are looking for a multiple of your earnings so every dollar you show may result in two or three times that amount in a sale. Consider some seller financing. It is proven to get a business sold faster and for more money than an all cash sale. Yes there are some risks involved. But a good attorney can build in enough protection that should cover you in the event of a default. There are many other ways to prepare a business for sale and to market it to the largest possible audience and to get it sold in a confidential and efficient manner. But follow these simple rules and you will stand out as a quality business with the best chance of being sold in today’s marketplace. it’S tHEir buSinESS Customers experience the Sinless Skin difference
S
unrise’s Sinless Skin is helping its clients feel vibrant, joyful, and confident. The spa, which opened in April, specializes in hair removal, as well as skin care and wellness treatments. It is dedicated to the total well-being of its clients, offering them a relaxing experience from the moment they arrive to the sounds of spa music and smells of essential oils burning. It is conveniently located at 179 NW 136th Ave., just north of I595, in the IKEA shops.
Carla and Greg Sanchez recently opened Sinless Skin, specializing in hair removal, as well as skin care and wellness treatments.
Carla Sanchez, owner and head esthetician, has been into beauty since she was a child. She grew up in Venezuela, where she says every little girl dreams of becoming Miss Universe. She has always followed a healthy diet and taken good care of her skin and body. When she moved to the United States in 1995, she taught her friends to do the same. She recently combined her knowledge of skin care and hair removal with her husband Greg’s marketing expertise to open Sinless Skin. Carla and Greg spent years researching the industry and attending trade shows to find the perfect mix of products and services. “Our philosophy is to make luxury affordable by providing the elite in products, treatment techniques, and facilities at reasonable prices,” said Greg. “Everything, including the design, construction, equipment, products and services, has been developed to lavishly pamper our clients, while catering to the specific needs and goals of each one. We use holistic methods that are safe, environmentally sound, non-invasive, healthy, and good for you long term.” When new clients arrive, Carla completes a free skin care analysis and consultation. Based on the client’s skin type and skin care goals, she recommends a range of products from basic skin care to anti-aging. Carla and Greg examined more than 60 skin care lines before deciding on the two that they offer. DermaNotion is a natural skin care line made with organic raw ingredients. The line simplifies product selection by color coding products for each skin type, and providing numbered solutions for most skin care goals. The assortment for each skin type includes a full range from cleansers, scrubs, masks, toners, daytime/nighttime serums, moisturizers and sun screen. Cellcosmet is a high end skin care line from Switzerland that uses a two step

process to achieve immediate and long term results. Its activator gel energizes and prepares the skin cells to receive the intended treatment, and its intracellular treatments use live stabilized cells infused with a variety of ingredients, such as collagen and elastin building blocks. In this second step, the cells in the products come in contact with the skin cells and transfer these nutrients through the natural unlocking of the cellular membranes. Sinless Skin also offers hair removal from almost any body part using the latest technology in electrolysis. Its high-end, FDA approved equipment removes hair quickly and permanently. “Our permanent hair removal does not have the risks associated with laser, such as hyper and hypo pigmentation, burning and scaring,” said Carla. “Our equipment utilizes a MicroFlash technology which provides far greater comfort than any other hair removal solution and removes unwanted hair in half the time as other electrolysis methods.” Sinless Skin also specializes in facial and body waxing. It offers six different types of imported waxes so there is one for every type of hair and skin. “We recognize that some areas of the body are more sensitive than others and that hair has different characteristics,” said Carla. “We select the wax that will produce the most effective, long-lasting results with the least amount of pain.” Many clients visit the spa to enjoy the wide variety of massages, facials and body treatments. Massages range from pain relief to simple relaxation and include deep tissue, hot stones, energy, stress relief, cranial release and more. Some of the most popular facials include Organic Revival, Sinless Organic, Organic Microdermabrasion, Lightening Elasto-Collagen, Intracellular and others. In addition, there are three different body scrubs for skin renewal, as well as treatments for body acne, cellulite and skin conditions. All of the therapists are experienced, licensed, trained and carefully selected. Sinless Skin sells an assortment of products, including body candles that are made from 100 percent soy wax and essential oils. They come in a variety of soothing scents. The melted wax can also be applied to skin to moisturize dehydrated and rough areas like elbows and knuckles. In just a few months, Sinless Skin has developed a loyal clientele that has recognized the benefits of its services and encouraged others to visit. Patricia McFarlane said, “The massage at Sinless Skin was nothing like I have had before. I feel like a new woman. I highly recommend it for all, especially if you are highly stressed.” Stacy Horton said, “Sinless Skin is now the only place I will go for my skin care needs. They are amazing!” Kim Wade said, “Sinless Skin is a great place all around. The staff is very friendly and makes you feel comfortable from the start. They are professional and the service is exceptional. I highly recommend Sinless Skin!” New clients receive up to $20 or 20% off any service, as well as a free skin analysis and consultation. Clients can also take advantage of Sinless Rewards, where they receive credits worth 20% of services, as well as corporate programs. Walk-ins or scheduled appointments accepted. Hours are Mon. to Tues., from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Wed. to Fri., from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sat., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 954-838-8883; visit www.sinlessskin.com or send an email to info@sinlessskin.com.

eston, FL (July 26, 2010) – Weston-based national gold buyer, GoldFellow® and aztig urban salon announced they will cohost a gold fundraiser, “Gold for the Gulf” to raise money and awareness for Gulf Aid (www.gulfaid.org) a 501(c)3 not-for-profit whose stated mission is to provide relief to the Gulf Coast fishing community, their families and address the long-term restoration and protection of America’s coastal wetlands. The event which is open to the public will be held at aztig urban salon, 1641 Bonaventure Boulevard in Weston on Thursday, September 2, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. GoldFellow® will purchase gold jewelry from participants and together with the salon, pledges to donate 10% of all gold purchased at the event to Gulf Aid. “Our goal is to raise $2,500 in three hours,” said Cynthia Nigro, director of national events for GoldFellow®. “Everyone has some old gold jewelry lying around they don’t wear like a broken chain or orphaned earring,” said Nigro. “Selling that gold to GoldFellow® at this event will benefit the seller - and Gulf Aid. The more gold we buy at this event…the more money we’ll raise.” According to Nigro, individuals selling gold are welcome to designate part – or even all – of their gold proceeds to Gulf Aid to further support this effort. Throughout the evening, aztig urban salon will offer complimentary hair styling, airbrush makeup and spray tanning demonstrations with a suggested minimum $5
donation to Gulf Aid per service. The salon also serves as a South Florida collection point for clean human or pet hair clippings which are donated to an organization which manufactures and distributes oil-absorbing mats and oil booms.
