Seen on scene Nutcracker Production Draws Huge Crowds as Weston Area Star Performers Wow Audiences International Ballet Company’s production of the Nutcracker in December was a smash hit with the young and old alike, drawing an audience of over 4,000 in five performances during the show’s run. The cast featured over 100 performers from the Weston-Davie area and throughout South Florida. The starring role of Clara was performed by Haylee Levin, 14, a freshman at Cypress Bay High School; the Snow Queen was danced by Abbey Kay, 15, a sophomore at Cypress Bay. The “Meet Clara and Friends” event after the Sunday matinee delighted children who received a picture of the cast and collected autographs and hugs from the lead performers. This was IBC’s 10th anniversary performance. Plans are being made now for IBC’s annual spring production. Students who enroll in the company’s school, International Dance Academy, this spring will have the opportunity to dance in that show. International Dance Academy (IDA) is the feeder school for International Ballet Company. The school offers ballet, pointe, partnering, tap, jazz and hip-hop, and adult classes. Also offered is Tu Tu Cuties for toddlers. The quality of the Academy’s classes is known throughout Florida. Several dancers have gone on from IDA to perform on Broadway and in major ballet companies

nationwide. IDA’s dancers are selected among thousands auditioning for summer dance programs at places like the Houston Ballet, the Boston Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and the San Francisco Ballet. In addition, IDA is the only studio in South Florida that offers the internationallyrecognized Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) program. A highly-regarded training and examining body for classical ballet in the world, RAD is under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth II. IDA students obtained a 100% pass rate last spring, achieving exceptional grades at each level tested. Registration Open for Spring! IDA is now accepting spring registrations for dancers ages 2 1/2 to professional. The studio is located in the Broward Lakes Business Park, 825 Shotgun Road north of Indian Trace in Weston. For more information on all the dance programs, call the studio at (954) 476-4419; drop by to see the facilities, or visit the website at www.IDA-dance.com. Photo 1 The upbeat tempo and kaleidoscope of colors in Spanish, danced by leads Danil Tourrenze and Emily Ahles wow the audience every year. Green Thumb Gardening Go Container Crazy by jim dezell
Residents of WESTON, are celebrating life in the tropics by adding color to their outdoor living spaces with greater interest and creativity than I have seen in 13 years of operating Flamingo Road Nursery. It appears that we are all tired of the negative news and are grateful for our beautiful South Florida climate and the opportunity it affords to create a tropical paradise for year-round enjoyment. Whether you own an estate or a condominium, you can enjoy uplifting, inspirational color up close to your personal living spaces through the use of container gardening. Container gardening is a favorite trend among homeowners because of the diversity it offers a landscape and its affordability. You can establish one large container for all your veggies and edibles on the patio and have the ability to control water and sunlight. This is critical during our hot and wet summers. Or you can create a sleek design to improve the curb appeal of an entryway with tall rectangular pots planted with spiked dramatic cordilines or grasses. From hanging baskets planted with annuals to decorative pots with perennials of varying heights and textures that create year-round interest, imagination is truly the limit when it comes to containers. Containers are available in countless varieties of shapes, colors and sizes. At Flamingo Road Nursery, we have the largest selection of pottery in South Florida in the broad categories of Mexican Talavera, Italian Terra Cotta, Vietnamese Glazed and Concrete. When choosing the container, consider how you would like the piece to be used. Would you like your front door formally framed or do you want to establish a
16 February 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com
new focal point in the landscape? Also take into account your house colors and style in choosing your container color.
Here’s a few tips:
• Use different sizes from the same pot series of color or shape to accent a more formal garden area, or combine these containers with a piece of garden art for a more informal and personalized design. • Spillers, Fillers and Thrillers! Try combining a tall, bold centerpiece such as a topiary or small patio tree, with medium-sized perennials surrounding it, and a trailing groundcover or vine that will delicately spill over the sides of the pot. • Potted plants are no longer just for the patio. They can be creatively arranged into landscape beds for extra height and color. • Containers are mobile and this allows for easy redecorating! Move your potted plants around your home once a month to keep your outdoor living spaces looking fresh and new. • Pick up a copy of “Container Gardens for Florida”, written by best-selling author Pamela Crawford, for great and practical ideas. • Finally, keep in mind that as we enter our summer season, which offers long days for family BBQ’s and enjoyment of our outdoor living spaces, the climate poses challenges in viable plant selection. Choose the right plants to thrive with low maintenance by getting expert advice at a local independent garden center.

school news Three Falcon Cove Students Perform in All State Band By Stacey Bomser
Three Falcon Cove Middle School students had the honor of playing before thousands of music professionals at the recent Florida Music Educator’s Association conference. Kerstin Yu, Nicole Machado and Daniel Moreno were selected to perform in the All State Middle School Band. The program is open to all seventh and eighth grade students. Those who wish to audition must perform seven major scales in less than two minutes memorized, their chromatic scale memorized in a fast tempo, a lyrical piece, a technical piece, as well as show competency at sight reading. Only the most accomplished musicians are chosen. About 80 students from throughout Florida were selected for this year’s All State Middle School Band. Ten were from Broward County, including three from Falcon Cove. “It’s a big deal to have just one student make this ensemble,” notes Ian Loew, Music Director at Falcon Cove Middle School. The students received their music about a month before the performance and practiced on their own. Just before the performance, all the young musicians met for three days of intensive rehearsals. The students practiced for six to eight hours per day to prepare for their performance. Seventh grader Kerstin Yu, who plays the flute, says their hard work really paid off. Nicole Machado agreed. According to the eighth grade clarinet player, “This was the greatest musical experience of my life!” Daniel Moreno, an eighth grade oboe player, relished the opportunity to play with other musicians of his level. Mr. Loew says he is extremely proud of his three students. “Since I started these young musicians, and remember when they could not produce a sound, it’s very
rewarding for me.” There are over 300 students in the band program at Falcon Cove. Mr. Loew says it is important to encourage youngsters in pursuits such as music education. “It can provide students with a strong sense of determination, improved communication skills, and a host of other qualities essential for successful living.” Falcon Cove Music Director Ian Loew poses with Kerstin Yu (left), Nicole Machado and Daniel Moreno. The three students were selected to play in the All State Middle School Band.
Community Invited to Walk for Wishes By Stacey Bomser
You can help make a sick child’s dream come true. The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida is hosting an inaugural Walk for Wishes 5K on Saturday, February 6th at Markham Park. Proceeds from the event will help grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. “This event was created as an opportunity for the local community to come together for a fun day under the sun and help grant wishes. Whether running or walking, everyone will be making a positive difference,” said Dulce Stephens, chairperson of the Walk for Wishes 5K. Make-A-Wish hopes to raise $60,000 from the Walk for Wishes 5K. That would be enough money to grant twelve wishes. Each year, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida fulfills the wishes of almost 500 children in 13 South Florida counties. It is the fourth largest wish-granting chapter in the world. Make-A-Wish grants the wish of any child between the ages of 2 ½ and 18 who has been diagnosed by a physician as having a life-threatening medical condition. Walk for Wishes will help ensure that every medically-eligible child receives a wish. A fulfilled wish offers a sick child a much-needed retreat from doctors and hospitals, helping them to focus on just being a kid. Walk for Wishes promises to be fun for everyone. It begins with a sanctioned 5K Run/Walk at 8:30am, followed by a Family Fun Day (from 9-11am) featuring a bounce house, DJ and face painter. The registration fee is $25 for adults and $10 for children in advance. An additional $5 per person will be charged to those registering on the day of the event. To pre-register, donate money, or simply learn more about Make-A-Wish and the Walk for Wishes 5K visit www.walkforwishes.net or call 888-773-9474.

school news Ten Tips to Help Your Child Conquer the FCAT By Stacey Bomser
Don’t be surprised if your child comes home from school muttering the f-word. Each February, parents and students alike cringe upon hearing that dreaded four-letter word -- FCAT. But, what exactly is the FCAT? According to the Florida Department of Education, the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, or FCAT, is part of the state’s overall plan to increase student achievement by implementing higher standards. Administered to students in Grades 3-11, the FCAT consists of standardized tests in mathematics, reading, science, and writing, which measure student progress toward meeting the Sunshine State Standards. Because the state uses the results for a variety of purposes, including student retention and school funding, a great deal of emphasis is placed on the FCAT. This can be quite stressful for many children. But, there is no need to fear. Our City Weston has compiled a list of strategies suggested by Weston teachers and school counselors to help any child conquer the FCAT. Practice makes perfect. Marianela Estripeaut, mathematics and science curriculum specialist at Cypress Bay High School, says parents should provide opportunity for daily FCAT practice. “Teachers have a plethora of FCAT type questions that they can send home at your request or have your child use online resources such as FCAT Explorer. Setting aside some time every day for a student to do a few FCAT style questions is very beneficial.” Consider tutoring. Ms. Estripeaut recommends students take advantage of every opportunity that their school offers for FCAT after-school tutoring and Saturday FCAT camps. Encourage “active reading.” According to Laurie Reichow, reading coach/content leader at Falcon Cove Middle School, active reading simply means reading with a pen or pencil in hand. “Students should underline or circle key concepts while reading a piece of text. Students should also jot down any notes or personal connections made while reading.” In class, she recommends students use Post-It notes which they can stick on the exact spot in the text. Find the “proof.” When students are answering test questions, make sure they refer back to the text and “find the proof” for the answer. Ms. Reichow encourages Parents can do more than simply provide Number 2 pencils to help their children prepare for the FCATs.
22 February 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com
students to go back and circle the “proof” for all answers. “This helps students be aware of the importance of referring back to the text for textual support.” Be focused when reading. Falcon Cove eighth grade reading teacher Cheryll Favarato instructs students to ask themselves the following questions when reading: Who was the story about? What was the story about? Where did the story take place? When did the story take place? How did the story end? “If a child goes into a story without focusing on what they are reading, they come out with little or no information.” Learn all the course material. Unfortunately, with the FCAT taking place months before the end of the school year, teachers can’t finish the textbook before the test. Susan Nanna Casbarro, sixth grade mathematics teacher at Falcon Cove, suggests students start with the last chapter in the book and watch the Internet Video Tutors going backwards. Don’t skip school. Emphasize good attendance and punctuality for your child. “Missing instruction always leaves gaps of understanding and makes learning more difficult,” shares Ms. Estripeaut. Read test questions carefully. In order to make sure students understand the question, Ms. Casbarro recommends students read the question, circle the main idea of the question, and then re-read the question. “Be sure to read all of the answers. Don’t always pick the first answer you think is correct, because there may be a better one later on.” Show your work. Ms. Casbarro cautions her students against doing mental math. “Show your work. Draw pictures to help you solve problems. Be careful with decimal points.” If time permits, double check your work. Instill confidence. According to the American School Counselor Association, the most important thing a parent can do is encourage their child to do his or her best. Tell your child you are proud of him/her for working so hard and being the best student they can be. For more suggestions on how to help your child prepare for the FCATs consult your child’s teacher or the school guidance counselor. The FCAT Writes exam takes place February 9-11. school news Camp Sagemont Adds Adventure Camp – Now Offers Something for Everyone By Stacey Bomser
The calendar may say February, but now is the time to start making summer camp plans for your children. Camp Sagemont will host a Camp Reunion/ Open House on Sunday, February 28th from 1 to 4pm. The carnival-themed event will feature fun games, a bounce house, plus popcorn and sno-cones. Former campers can rekindle old friendships, while prospective campers and their families can tour the campus facilities and learn about all the amazing opportunities available this summer at Camp Sagemont. With programs for children from preschool through eighth grade, there is something for everyone at Camp Sagemont. “Our goal is to provide our campers with a safe, fun environment where they have the opportunity to express themselves and experience a variety of activities for a summer full of great memories,” states Edwin Cruz, Camp Sagemont Director. This will be Camp Sagemont’s 14th fun-filled season. This traditional camp program, for children in preK3 through third grade, offers campers a variety of activities including arts and crafts, cheerleading, computers, cooking, dance, drama, karate, music, sports, swimming, video arcade, science and more. Special events and field trips will coincide with different theme weeks such as Life’s a Luau Week. Older children may prefer one of Camp Sagemont’s specialty camp programs. Art Camp and Science Camp are back by popular demand. These camps, available for third through eighth graders, were introduced last year and were highly successful. For kids who like to get up and go, Travel Camp is an exciting experience. Campers, in grades four through eight, visit a variety of recreational and educational venues throughout South Florida. This summer, Camp Sagemont is introducing Adventure Camp for fifth through eighth graders. This exhilarating new program will give campers the opportunity to partake in adventurous field trips such as canoeing, snorkeling, and fishing, test their skills on ropes courses and at the skate park, and participate in team-building activities. “My goal is for the campers to experience fun and stimulating outdoor activities that will instill in them a sense of self-confidence and leadership,” says Mike Crisona, leader of the Adventure Camp. Of course, Camp Sagemont will continue to offer its ever-popular Sports Camp for students in grades two through eight. Campers play a variety of sports and enjoy field trips to water parks, bowling and Florida Marlins baseball games. The All American Basketball School will be offering its camp again this summer on The Sagemont Upper School Campus. Kids ages five through fourteen learn basketball skills from accomplished players and coaches. All campers participate in Color War, which splits

Caring & Sharing Cypress Bay Siblings Share Love of Art By Stacey Bomser
Ben and Emily Ankus are your typical teenagers, with one exception. The Cypress Bay High School students are also the founders of a non-profit foundation dedicated to working with special needs children. Through Art Plus Heart, the siblings help inspire others with a love of art. It all started with Ben’s Bar Mitzvah project. For his “mitzvah” or “good deed,” he decided to use his passion for art to help others. He contacted the Miami Children’s Hospital Dan Marino Center to see if he could put his talents to good use teaching the special needs children how to draw. “He saw how rewarding that experience was and how much the kids enjoyed it and expanded it into this project,” explains his sister Emily. The two now work together to bring the beauty of art to children through Art Plus Heart. They have been invited to work with children at the Dan Marino Center’s Camp DMC, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s Fall Harvest Festival, and Coral Rock Academy in Miami. Ben, a freshman at Cypress Bay, and Emily, a sophomore, work mostly with special needs children. “They really enjoy it,” shares Emily. “I think they can relate to art more than talking. It’s like art therapy for them.” The siblings work one-on-one with the kids. Depending upon the child’s ability, they teach different skills. According to Ben, “We will teach some children to create a cartoon character following step-by-step directions. While others will trace images, or simply color a picture I have drawn.” He notes that some children are content just watching him draw.

your money Securities-Based Lending - A Financing Alternative for Investors If you have a portfolio that may be used as collateral for a loan, you may be able to access liquidity without immediately liquidating securities and still maintain your portfolio’s current exposure to the market. This is known as securities-based lending.
What is SecuritiesBased Lending?
Securities-based lending is generally a revolving line of credit that uses your eligible investment portfolio as collateral. This strategy allows you to access funds without immediately liquidating your portfolio. In order to establish a securitiesbased loan, your portfolio is pledged to a lending institution as collateral. This gives you, the investor and the borrower, the ability to access liquidity while maintaining your portfolio’s current exposure to the market. You will continue to receive the benefit of any dividends, interest or capital appreciation that may accrue in the account. However, if you have an outstanding loan balance and the portfolio used to secure that loan declines in value, the lending institution may require you to post additional collateral or repay part or all of the loan. The lending institution may also liquidate all or part of the portfolio, which may interrupt your long-term investment strategy and could result in adverse tax consequences.
For Whom Is Securities-Based Lending Appropriate?
A securities-based loan may be an alternative to traditional borrowing for an investor who wants access to borrowing for non-purpose use. Since there is risk involved in this type of strategy, this avenue should be explored only if you are risk tolerant.
What is Non-Purpose Borrowing?
Loans that are provided by lenders, such as banks
and brokerage firms, must be classified as either purpose or non-purpose, as directed by the Federal Reserve. The proceeds of a non-purpose loan may not be used to purchase, carry or trade securities. Therefore a nonpurpose securities-based loan is a loan that uses an eligible investment portfolio as collateral for funds for purposes other than purchasing, trading, or carrying securities, or for refinancing other debt used for these purposes. Some uses for a non-purpose loan include: • Financing real estate opportunities • Paying taxes • Refinancing high interest debt business • Financing opportunities • Funding higher education • Buying a luxury item Non-purpose borrowing against an eligible investment portfolio has a number of benefits that are not available with traditional margin borrowing. While a margin loan must be drawn in the same account where the eligible securities are held, a non-purpose loan is held in a different account; thus, multiple asset accounts may be pledged to secure one non-purpose loan. This structure is particularly useful in situations where multiple parties wish to secure a loan for a single borrower, for example, business partners securing a business loan for their company. In addition, there are often higher borrowing limits or release percentages against the value of your eligible securities when they are pledged for a non-purpose loan.
What Types of Non-Purpose SecuritiesBased Loans Are Typically Available?
The terms and/or types of non-purpose securities-based loans will vary by lending institution; however, in general, these loans are uncommitted, demand facilities with
either a fixed interest rate for a period of time or a variable rate. The lender may require repayment of a demand loan at any time, without notice. school news University School Breaks Down Barriers at Martin Luther King Jr. Assembly By Stacey Bomser
It’s been almost 50 years since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. forever changed American history with his infamous “I Have a Dream” speech. Today, his words continue to inspire a new generation of Americans. “I think one thing that most people forget when it comes to Dr. Martin Luther King is that he stood not only for equality among races but among genders, ages and the like,” explains Senior Gabrielle Roland, co-president of the Student Diversity Leadership Association at the University School of Nova Southeastern University’s Upper School. The club sponsored a Martin Luther King, Jr. Assembly to celebrate his accomplishments. “Our hope is that the student body will be inspired to pick up where Dr. King left off and lead the children of the future on a mission for equality in every sense of the word.” Co-president Raquelle Newman, grade 12, adds, “I hope that they will understand that the progress we have made thus far as a society is still in process; and that as young Freshman Gillian Newman delivers a passionate performance while reciting an original poem, “Slam,” written by her sister, Raquelle, during the Martin Luther King Jr. Assembly at University School.

students, it is our responsibility to educate those who are unwilling to listen. A voiceless person is unacceptable; and silence in the face of ignorance can be detrimental to our future as a nation.” The theme of this year’s assembly was “Breaking Down Barriers.” This topic was explored through student prose, poetry and song. “The Martin Luther King assembly is a nice reminder of how diverse our school’s population is and is a unique opportunity to see some of the students’ talents,” says Senior Brooke Weisman, of Davie. The program began with Freshman Gillian Newman performing Goldfinger’s “Free Me” on guitar, set to a video montage of Dr. King’s speech and images depicting the civil rights movement, as well as accomplished African-Americans. Gabrielle Roland performed Bob Marley’s “One Love.” That was followed by the original poem, “SLAM,” written and performed by Raquelle Newman along with Jasmine Wilson, grade 10, and Gillian Newman. The assembly concluded with Mr. Dibert’s American Sign Language class performing R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly.” The keynote speaker was Dr. Debra Nixon, a diversity professor from NSU’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences. She delivered an inspirational message about change and how today’s youth can follow in Dr. King’s footsteps and change the way people think and act. “We are all one people,” she shared. “What comes between us is our perceptions.” Sophomore Sydney Schneider, of Weston, walked away inspired and encouraged. “Dr. Nixon’s enthusiastic example of how the human race all fits together, like colors created by Isaac Newton’s prism experiment, was quite moving. In the assembly, I realized that Martin Luther King’s ideals not only changed our history, but also continue to serve as an example for all of us to live by today.” And that was exactly what the event organizers had hoped for. “We designed the program to remind the students that Dr. King liberated the United States, not just African Americans,” says Newman. “He allowed people to see different methods of protest and through his efforts truly united the American people for the first time.”

Community News Audiences Sing the Praises of the Girl Choir of South Florida
By Stacey Bomser
The Girl Choir of South Florida is celebrating its fifth season. In just a few years this organization has become a cultural force in the community. The Girl Choir will host its spring concert, “Journeys and Destinations,” at the beautiful Broward Center for the Performing Arts in May. The show, which is open to the public, will feature talented young singers from the Weston community. The Girl Choir is comprised of girls and young women from all across Broward County. “Before I started this, there was no singing program for girls in our area,” explains Founder and Artistic Director Wallis Peterson, who used to serve as director of the Training Choir for the Florida’s Singing Sons Boychoir. Her two sons perform with that organization. “Many parents said they were looking for a choral program

for their daughters…and that’s how the Girl Choir of South Florida was created.” Today, there are nearly 100 singers, ages seven to eighteen, in the Girl Choir. They are divided into three choruses depending upon their experience, ability and maturity. The Primes Choir is open to younger girls. Singers, ages seven through ten, learn the basics of music theory and vocal technique. In the Apprentice Choir, girls ages nine through 13 continue their vocal development while learning more advanced theory, sight-singing skills and choreography skills. The Concert Choir is comprised of the most experienced singers, ages 12 through 18. This choir offers choristers the opportunity to excel in music literacy skills while performing a diverse, high-quality repertoire. In addition to local performances, the Concert Choir performs nationally. This June, the girls will sing at the Crescent City Choral Festival in New Orleans. Peterson says the Girl Choir is much more than just a singing club; it is a highly structured and disciplined musical program. The curriculum includes both vocal instruction and a multi-level music theory course that teaches music literacy skills. Peterson, who holds a degree in music education and has taught music for nearly 20 years, created the music theory program specifically for the Girl Choir. Girls work at their own pace through this ten-level course and are given graded exams at the completion of each level to demonstrate proficiency. According to Peterson, “I found that the girls who finished our program and took AP Music all did exceptionally well in school and got 5’s on their exams. And two of my graduates are now studying music in college.” Although rigorous, the girls find the program rewarding. “Girl Choir has taught me not only a ton
about music, but about working together and achieving goals with hard work. Girl Choir taught me that if you really want to do something, you can, no matter how impossible it might seem at the time,” shares Jenna Workman, a 13-year-old from Weston. She is enjoying her second season as a member of the Girl Choir of South Florida. Allie Darmanian-Harris, also of Weston, has learned a lot from her four years as a member of Girl Choir. According to the 15-year-old, she now understands how powerful music can be. “Before every performance my conductor always says you can sing a song technically perfect and not make one mistake, but if you have not moved your audience then you have not done your job.” If the glowing accolades the girls have received are any indication, they are certainly moving audiences with their melodies. The Girl Choir of South Florida is regularly invited to sing at civic, educational, cultural and charitable events. You can see the Girl Choir of South Florida perform at their spring concert, “Journeys and Destinations.” This program will feature the world premiere of a new work by award-winning composer David Brunner commissioned exclusively for the Girl Choir. “We invite the audience to travel around the world in song with musical numbers performed by all three of our choruses,” says Peterson. The spring concert will be on Sunday, May 16th from 4-6pm at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are available through the Broward Center box office. The Girl Choir of South Florida will hold open auditions for its 2010-2011 season on Saturday, June 5th. For more information, visit www.girlchoir.org.

caring & sharing Weston Residents Rally to Support Haitian Earthquake Victims By Stacey Bomser
The dust had not even settled following the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, last month, before Weston residents were responding to the call for aid. Community activists were quick to organize a collection here in town where residents could donate goods which would be delivered to the American Red Cross. “Just like every other person watching the news and seeing people begging for help, you have to react,” says Jose Pinera, who helped organize the collection. “Reacting alleviates the feeling of helplessness.” Pinera began by reaching out to family and friends through Facebook, asking them to donate what they could. They, in turn, passed the message along to other friends and neighbors. And word quickly spread around town. “Weston always comes together in time of need,” he notes. “The Weston community is always ready to respond and give.” And this time was no exception. Weston residents donated enough goods to fill half of a 26-foot moving truck. Items collected included: bottled water, diapers, baby food, nonperishable food, brand new clothing and shoes, first aid supplies and much more. Watching the Weston community come together in a time of need was a rewarding experience for all involved. Pinera says the event would not have been possible without the support of friends like Hal and Barbara Hammel, Bob and Karen D’Angelo, Soraya and Eddie Guerra, and Bill Lewis. Many children joined the cause, helping Pinera collect and sort donations. Others made donations at school. For instance, students at Falcon Cove Middle School supported the district-wide initiative making donations for Food For The Poor, Hope For Haiti and World Vision. “I hope that this teaches children that there is a world out there,” shares Pinera. “That there’s something greater and bigger than one individual.” The American Red Cross is still accepting donations to help the Haitian earthquake victims. Donations can be made online at www.southfloridaredcross.org, by calling 1-800-REDCROSS, or by texting “HAITI” to 90999 ($10 will be added to your phone bill).
Weston students showed their support for the Haitian earthquake victims by donating supplies, such as these collected at Falcon Cove Middle School.
Haitian Relief Efforts The Broward Sheriff’s office has teamed up with Food for the Poor to help the people of Haiti. All three fire stations in Weston, along with BSO fire stations throughout the county will collect items for delivery. Shipping is limited to items most necessary at this time. The ONLY items accepted at the fire stations are: Canned meat & fish, evaporated & condensed milk, water, baby formula, medical supplies and tents which are desperately needed. Monetary donations are most needed. BSO has a link at www.sheriff. org/haiti, where donations can be made. Food For the Poor is the largest international relief and development organization in the United States. Over 96% of all donations go directly to benefit the people of Haiti.

Cover story Dr. Augustino Delivers on Pledge to Provide Patients with Personalized Care By Stacey Bomser
It’s been a year since Dr. Michael Augustino opened his own office and he says it’s been the best decision he ever made – both for himself and his patients. Before going into private practice, the beloved OB/ GYN pledged to provide more personalized patient care and he has definitely delivered on that promise. Dr. Augustino sees all of his patients: there are no nurse practitioners or midwives. While all patients have the benefit of his twenty-plus years of experience and expertise, his prenatal patients have the added benefit of knowing that their personal doctor will be there in the delivery room. “I can count on one hand how many babies I did not deliver this year,” says Dr. Augustino. “And that’s only because those babies came really early and, unfortunately, I was out of town.” He is quick to point out that he carefully plans his schedule to make sure he is never away when one of his patients is due. But emergencies happen and that is why Dr. Augustino shares weekend call services with other physicians. “Rest assured, my commitment is to my patients. Regardless of whether I am on call or not, if I am here I will deliver your baby.” While this might be overwhelming to some physicians, Dr. Augustino would not have it any other way. “To be able to deliver my own patients is not only preferable to them, but more satisfying to me.” Both he and his staff develop a connection with patients during the course of their pregnancy. “During those nine months, patients get as attached to my staff as to me. Some patients even ask the girls to hold their new baby during their post-partum exam.” It’s quite obvious that the patients also feel this connection; the office walls are covered with baby pictures and heartfelt thank-you notes. The prenatal patients aren’t the only ones to benefit from Dr. Augustino becoming a solo practitioner. “Since I have been on my own I have reduced the number of patients I see on a daily basis, so I can spend more time with my patients. Now I have the luxury of really getting to know my patients and their needs.” This is one reason he is so excited to begin offering natural hormone replacement to patients. “I feel like a kid at Christmas. I can’t wait to give my patients the level of satisfaction that I believe this will provide,” states Dr. Augustino, who has spent the past year researching the effectiveness of this treatment program. “Natural hormone replacement is safer, healthier and has far less side effects than synthetic hormones and delivers better results.” Unlike traditional prescription drugs, natural hormone replacement therapy can be tailored to each individual patient. “Dosage is based on actual lab work, as well as weight and age, so each patient has a personalized treatment plan,” explains Dr. Augustino. “I measure these parameters at each office visit and can alter the dosage accordingly.” This is important, especially for women entering menopause. According to Dr. Augustino, “I’ve been in practice for over 20 years and now a significant portion of my patients are reaching menopause and will be able to benefit from this treatment.” Natural hormone replacement therapy is also ideal for any woman who has undergone the surgical removal of her reproductive organs. “This is the closest thing to your ovaries working as modern medicine can provide,” says Dr. Augustino. He is also adding a weight management program to the practice. “Over the years I have had many patients ask me about different diet programs, but I have never been happy with what’s out there,” he explains. “Now I can offer a medically-supervised weight management program right here in my office.” That’s just one more example of how Dr. Augustino is delivering on his pledge to better serve his patients. The solo practitioner is also fulfilling his promise to be more accessible to patients. This includes providing evening hours, making registration

forms available online, and releasing results in a timely fashion. “Nothing is more gratifying to me than when patients say they see the difference our practice provides.” You can experience the difference yourself. Dr. Augustino is accepting new patients. His services include, but are not limited to: obstetrics (complete prenatal care including high-risk pregnancy); in-office ultrasound; annual exams; menopause care; family planning and contraceptive counseling; in-office lab testing; mammography and bone density screening; and surgical procedures and alternatives. The long-time Weston resident credits his family’s support for his success. “We have always been a close-knit family and we all pulled together to open this practice,” shares Dr. Augustino. “My wife, Dana, has been invaluable. Her maternal characteristics extend to the office. She always makes sure my staff is taken care of, as are my patients. For instance, one time when I was running late because of an emergency surgery, Dana delivered danish and muffins to the office for my patients to enjoy while they waited.” She also personally makes rounds at the hospital and delivers baby gifts to all patients after they deliver. The practice also gives gifts to the older siblings when they accompany mom and baby to the office. Dr. Augustino’s three sons have also been very supportive. Youngest son, Anthony, still lives at home in Weston and is a senior at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. He helped design the office website. Nicholas is a finance major at the University of Florida and oldest son, Michael, is married and living in Buffalo, New York. Dr. Michael Augustino is a board certified OB/GYN. fitness forum Guaranteed Success in Your New Year’s Program By Ellen Latham, MS
Many people start the new year with a resolution to exercise more, lose weight or improve health - but not many follow through. January hits and you’re overwhelmed by everyday life and your exercise plans get put on the back burner. Follow the three steps below and I can guarantee your pants will be looser, you will have more energy throughout the day and you will be living in a better body for 2010. Go buy yourself a pair of sneakers (don’t drag out the old worn pair) and some exercise clothes (if you don’t have the right clothing). This sends a message to yourself that you are ready to do this. Purchase your exercise sessions. Ellen’s Ultimate Workout has been chosen as the best in the area because we are not interested in selling to the most individuals, we are interested in really changing bodies. We do that by educating clients when they purchase and book their sessions ahead of time. They are more likely to show up and results occur. They now have a plan of action. Research has shown that you are 85% more likely to follow through in your workout when you pre-booked it as opposed to 25% chance of attending when you leave it to “Let me see how I feel tomorrow and then I will decide if I want to go!” You usually don’t go. Be demanding. Only workout with the best fitness

professionals in the area. If your workout does not have the following components get rid of your instructor: • They instruct you to relax tension in the muscles not used in the workout. • They should be correcting your form constantly. • They should, in a group setting, remind you not to compete during the workout. • They should teach you how to expend effort so energy increases not decreases. (The old boot camp mentality is just that old). • They should teach you how to pace yourself and focus on the immediate result - to take one step at a time. • They should help you with letting go of distractions and how to concentrate on your present effort. (If you are having a conversation about your weekend with your trainer you are not getting a great workout). Question of the month: Can snacking after a workout hamper a client’s weight loss? Answer: Clients working out with a goal of losing weight should be encouraged to maintain a calorie deficit after a workout by keeping any snacks to a minimum. A general rule of thumb is to indulge in snacks that do not exceed 200 calories. For example, a good choice after a moderate workout would be a cup of light yogurt
topped with berries or a cup of raw veggies served with 2 tablespoons of bean dip. When is comes to weight loss, it’s not so much a question of whether to snack after a workout. What’s most important is the number of calories consumed over the course of a day and the type of snack chosen. Focus on energy balance after a workout. For example, a high caloric burn like the Ultimate Workout at our studio burns 600-1,000 calories, and it’s easy to succumb to the lure of high-caloric foods after an appetite-revving workout...don’t! New classes now offered at Ellen’s ultimate workout…Ultimate Ballet Barre - The fat burning, butt tightening, thigh slimming, posture straightening, figure sculpting routine that has taken Hollywood by storm. health & wellness Basic Back-Saving Tips By Dr. Browner & Dr. Behar
Make no mistake: back pain is epidemic in our society. The human and financial costs are staggering and getting worse. Yet most cases of back pain are easily preventable. The following are ten basic backsaving tips to help keep you from becoming another member of the growing back disability club: 1 Lift with your legs, not your back. Remember: “legs lift, backs break!” 2 When returning to upright posture, first bend your knees. 3 Rest one foot on a
footstool when standing for long periods of time. 4 Sleep on your side or back, not your stomach. 5 When lifting or carrying, keep your shoulders, feet and hips facing forward. 6 Listen to your body. Respect the signals it sends you. Know your limits. 7 Push, don’t pull. You have twice as much power and less chance of injury. 8 Develop a regular exercise program to keep your back flexible, strong and aerobically fit. 9 At all times, strive for good posture. Think TALL! 10 Remember: Preventative spinal care begins with regular chiropractic check-ups. Minor alignment or movement problems of the spine can be “silent” for a long time before any pain is felt. Detecting and correcting these problems early can avoid unnecessary pain and expense later, and keep small problems from becoming BIG! An ounce of prevention is worth a lot more than a pound of cure. For a consultation or more information you can reach Dr. Browner & Dr. Behar at Windmill Health Center, Weston 954217-4881. We also have two additional locations to serve you in Pembroke Pines and Plantation, contact our Weston location for more information.

health & wellness Men - Are You Running On Empty? By Dr. Jean Claude Nerette D.O.
Are you having problems with focus and concentration? Are you gaining weight in the belly area? Do you feel depressed, irritable or unmotivated? Is your sex drive down? Or are you just dealing with these symptoms and think “I’m just getting OLD”? Testosterone levels decline significantly after the age of 35. Testosterone deficiency is not only linked to decreased libido but also to a number of medical problems. These include the chance of developing heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Men in general believe that just because they have no complaints in the “love making” department that their testosterone must be normal. Testosterone deficiency may also be referred to as the silent killer like high blood pressure as the symptoms come on gradually. The reduction of lean body mass and metabolism as a result of low testosterone results in gradual weight gain which not only increases the risk of high blood pressure but also type 2 diabetes. Low testosterone levels have been related to thickening of plaque on the arterial walls increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke significantly. Other symptoms associated with low testosterone include mood swings, lack of energy, depression, irritability, sleep disorders and loss of muscular endurance. The fact that testosterone deficiency comes on so gradual is the reason why many men accommodate to these changes listed. When the changes start to happen, we contribute them to “work burn out”, “mid-life crisis”, or just “getting old”. Sometimes our pride is not just our greatest strength but, unfortunately our greatest weakness. Standard Features: Did you know that men with higher testosterone levels live longer and have lower rates of diabetes and heart attacks? It is proven that men prescribed hormone replacement therapy receive enormous quality of life improvements which include increased sexual desire, performance, and fulfillment, along with marked enhancements in energy and well being.
Packages and Options: One should not deprive themselves from eyeglasses if their sight is declining due to age. Nor should one accept that nothing can be done to restore their testosterone levels. With a simple blood test, Dr. Nerette can prescribe the right package (prescription) to put you back in balance. Specifications: Without normal levels of hormones, our bodies are swept into a state of chaos and disease. Upon receiving the bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, you can expect increased sexual arousal, increased libido, improved mental acuity, improved mental focus and concentration, improved muscle tone, less fatigue, more energy and improved bone density. Accessories: Once your hormones are in balance you might want to consider some exterior overhauling. Skin care is very important. Proper cleansing, moisturizing, and sunscreen are very important to keep your skin looking great but also to prevent possibilities of skin cancer; not to mention wrinkle reducers such as Botox and dermal fillers. Maintenance: Return to shop (Doctor’s office) once every six months for refilling. Hormone Replacement Therapy is the SMART CHOICE with benefits that will not only last but also improve your quality of life. Just sit back and enjoy the ride back to your old (young) self. haute hair style How to Get the Perfect Cut and Color By Helen Charles
Questions to ask yourself:
What hair type have I got? Knowing what your hair is capable of is a must. If you are visiting a salon for the first time, have a long consultation with your new stylist and don’t book an appointment until you are convinced they understand your hair. Is my hair the right length? If you have extremely course and thick hair, your choices are long (below shoulders) or cropped short. Your ideal styles would not be mid-length as the volume would be unmanageable without the length to weigh it down. You would also need to consider your face shape and height to choose between long and short. Extensions can come to rescue if you have recently shortened your length unsuccessfully. What is my lifestyle like? Your lifestyle will dictate how much time and money you have to devote to your hair. It is possible to look extremely smart and stylish by having a cut that does not need constant blow-drying, when texture of the hair is considered and the correct finishing product is used (ie fine hair in a short bob look will need light serum to smooth texture and add shine, while course hair in a cropped style will require gels or waxes with strong hold).
The color rules
Think skin tone If you want a natural looking finish, then you will need to consider your skin tone. As a general rule, cool skin tones suit base colors with blue and purple hues, whereas warm skin tones benefit from orange and red undertones. These colors should form the base of any color you would like to add to your hair. Light and natural If you are after a shade that enhances
56 February 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com
what you already have or returns your hair to its natural tone, then highlights for blonds and a demi-permanent color for brunettes may be the perfect answer. Both options add shine. Solid and shiny Some color treatments thicken the hair strand. With this in mind, if you are after a shade that makes your hair shiny and healthy then an all over demi-permanent may be the answer. In general demi-permanents are less damaging than permanent colors.
Style options
Will I suit a fringe (bangs)? Fringes suit most face shapes, especially long ones and can even hide wrinkles. Avoid a straight fringe if you have a square face as it can make it look more angular. What will layers do? Layers add movement and texture to fine hair. They also help frame round and long faces and can be used to thin out thicker hair. Does my hair need thinning out? Very thick hair can sometimes benefit from thinning scissors, however beware if your hair is course, as cutting it too short can make it spike up, leaving your root area messy and unmanageable. What about my curls? It definitely pays to hunt out a stylist who knows how to cut curls. The rules are different when it comes to curls as weight will create different textures and results. Wet curly locks will look longer than they will when they are dry and asking for a shorter style than practical can result in months of disappointment. FOR YOUR HEALTH
Are You Heart Smart? Mercedes K.C. Dullum, MD - Cleveland Clinic Cardiac Surgeon
Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States. One in every 2.4 women dies of heart disease. Approximately 35 percent of heart attacks go unnoticed in women. Why you may ask? Possibly because women do not always take symptoms seriously and are not taking preventive measures.
Get Heart Smart What can you do to improve your cardiovascular health? The following Q&A with Cleveland Clinic cardiothoracic surgeon, Mercedes K.C. Dullum, M.D., explores risk factors and preventive heart care options for women. Q. What causes cardiovascular disease? A. Major risk factors include genetics, smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Some other factors that can contribute to heart disease include stress, obesity, and lack of exercise. The presence of risk factors does not guarantee that you will have heart problems, and the absence of risk factors does not guarantee that you will never get heart disease. Q. What are some simple preventative tips? A. Live a healthy lifestyle by incorporating exercise as a regular part of your daily activities. Make it your goal to maintain an ideal body weight with a healthy diet and exercise. Q. What else can I do to improve my heart’s health? A. Make an appointment with your physician to discuss your personal history and your health concerns. Your physician can recommend tests you can take to develop a healthy heart plan including recommendations for an appropriate diet and exercise program. Q. What are some of the risk factors that I can control by changing my behavior? A. Tobacco smoke is the single most preventable cause of death in the United States. Excessive drinking can contribute to obesity, high triglycerides, cancer and other diseases, raise blood pressure, cause heart failure and lead to stroke. Another modifiable behavior is physical inactivity, which various studies have shown is a risk factor for heart disease and indirectly increases the risk of stroke. And, of course, it is important to maintain a healthy and balanced diet, avoiding foods that are high in cholesterol, saturated fats, and trans fats. Q. What screenings should I have to check my heart health? A. The following four screenings and measurements are a great starting point for understanding your current health condition: 1) blood pressure (systolic and diastolic), 2) height, weight and waist circumference, 3) total cholesterol and 4) fasting blood glucose (sugar). Based on the results, your physician can advise the appropriate changes to your diet and exercise regimen. Health & Wellness Check Your I.Q. on AMD - Age-Related Macular Degeneration An estimated 13 - 15 million Americans show evidence of Age‑Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), a progressive eye condition that can destroy “straight-ahead” vision, according to Dr. Jane Therrien, Therapeutic Optometrist. “February is AMD Awareness Month and we encourage all people, especially those at higher risk for this disease, to familiarize themselves with the potential symptoms and need for regular eye examinations,” Dr. Therrien said. “To help people better understand this disease, we’ve prepared a list of Frequently Asked Questions about AMD.” Q: What is AMD? A: AMD stands for Age-related Macular Degeneration, a disease that breaks down the macula - the light-sensitive portion of the retina that allows you to see fine detail. It blurs the straight-ahead vision required for activities such as reading or driving Q: What causes AMD? A: The causes of AMD are still unknown. One form of AMD (Dry) may be caused by aging and thinning of the macular tissues, pigment deposits in the macula, or a combination of the two. The other form of AMD (Wet), results when new blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak blood and fluid. This leakage causes retinal cells to die and creates blind spots in central vision. Q: Who is at risk for AMD? A: Risk factors for AMD include: Smoking, High Blood Pressure, Obesity, and Family History of AMD. Also, whites and females are more prone to AMD. Q: What are the symptoms of AMD? A: Early symptoms of AMD included blurred vision or dark spots in the center of vision. The symptoms can appear painlessly and gradually, making early detection and treatment essential.
Q: How can AMD be detected? A: Early-stage AMD can be detected through a comprehensive eye exam that includes a visual acuity test, dilated eye exam and tonometry. If AMD is detected, further tests may be required Q: Can AMD be cured? A: There is no cure or AMD at this time. There are, however, certain treatments that can slow or minimize vision loss, and, in some cases, even improve vision. Q: How is AMD treated? A: There are several treatment options that your eye doctor may consider, including: Vitamins. Research suggests that certain vitamin supplements taken in combination may reduce vision loss in some stages of AMD Drug Therapy Laser Surgery (Wet AMD) “While there is no cure for AMD, early detection and treatment can slow or minimize vision loss, and, in some cases even improve vision.” Dr.Therrien said. “There are also devices that can help people suffering from AMD-related vision loss achieve improvement in their functional vision for performing daily routines.” Dr. Therrien owns and practices at Weston Family Eyecare located at 4472 Weston Road in Weston and is a member of Vision Source, the nation’s number one network of private practice optometrists. Founded in 1991, The Vision Source network includes more than 1,500 offices in all 50 states and in Canda. For a consultation or more information you can reach Dr. Jane Therrien at Weston Family Eyecare, 954-888-9393. Dr. Therrien and her staff look forward to exceeding your expectations.
South Florida’s Largest Pediatric Practice Urges Parents to Take the Seasonal Flu As Seriously as H1N1 Pediatric Associates, South Florida’s largest privately owned pediatric practice, is urging parents to vaccinate their children against the seasonal flu.
Seasonal Flu Facts: Did You Know? • 1 in 6 people in the United States contracted the 2009 H1N1 Flu. This is important information for those patients who have refused any vaccination efforts • The CDC believes that regular seasonal influenza viruses will co-circulate with 2009 H1N1 influenza in the coming months • 16% of all Pediatric Flu deaths were NOT directly attributed to the 2009 H1N1 sub-type (Swine). • As of November 28, 2009 only 89.4% of influenza specimens reported to WHO were sub-typed as 2009 H1N1, which means “regular” seasonal influenza viruses are likely becoming a more prevalent cause of flu-like illness. • Compare this to one month ago, when more than 99% of all sub-typed influenza reported to CDC were 2009 H1N1 viruses. • The “Regular” Influenza Virus, which is likely to increase in incidence in the coming months, does demonstrate resistance to medication, so vaccination is still a gold standard for prevention/protection. • “Regular” Influenza is likely to become more prevalent in January, February, and March. • “Regular” Influenza is much more likely to be resistant to medications than the 2009 H1N1 sub-type.
60 February 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com
• Each year in the United States “regular” seasonal flu causes more than 200,000 people to be hospitalized and; about 36,000 people die from seasonal flu-related causes. • “Regular” Influenza vaccine can be given at the same time as other vaccines including the 2009 H1N1 vaccine “With so much attention on H1N1 this year, some parents have not taken seasonal flu as seriously as they should,” said Pediatric Associates’ Medical Director C. Rocky Slonaker, M.D. “It’s important that children get vaccinated for both the seasonal flu as well as the H1N1 flu. We believe that we will see a resurgence of the seasonal flu over the next few months and want to be sure that our children are protected against all strains of the influenza virus.” The seasonal flu vaccine protects against the three most common strains of influenza, while H1N1 only protects against that one strain, said Slonaker. “The two prime ways to stopping the spread of all virus strain types is by getting vaccinated and keeping our hands clean.” Pediatric Associates observed National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) January 10-16, 2010, a national observance that was established to highlight the importance of continuing influenza vaccination, as well as foster greater use of flu vaccine after the holiday season into the first quarter of 2010. All 21 practice locations from West Kendall to St. Lucie will give out flu prevention education information to patients and make outreach efforts to patients who haven’t been vaccinated.

Community News KIDs Classic Dinner Gala to benefit Abused and Neglected Children The statistics are disturbing: In Florida, at least one in every 27 children is abused or neglected each year. While Kids In Distress receives funds from government and municipal sources, they depend on the community - on private individuals and businesses - to offset approximately one third of their costs and operating expenses. Twenty-four hours a day, Kids in Distress (KIDs) protects children in South Florida from abuse and neglect and currently serves more than 7,000 children and families annually. They strive to establish strong and healthy families that can care for their children and keep them safe. Now, you can help bridge the gap in supportive services for abused and neglected children in South Florida. Come out and enjoy an evening of fun and entertainment at the KIDs Classic Dinner Gala - An Evening In Paradise Jimmy Buffet style. This event will benefit Kids In Distress and will be held on Saturday, March 6th, at 6:30 pm. The event will take place at the Bonaventure Hyatt in Weston. Kids In Distress goes above and beyond in order to keep families together in hard economic times. Natalie was about to lose her home, and with no home, she would also lose her children. Kids In Distress stepped in and gave Natalie two months of mortgage payments from an emergency fund to tie her over. Natalie also attended
parenting classes in order to learn how to better manage the children and help them with their schoolwork and social relationships. In two months time, the plan was taking hold. The school reported that the children’s grades improved and each had a growing number of friends. Today’s economy is making it difficult for more and more families to survive day-to-day. Without the support of individual donors and corporate partners in our community, Kids in Distress could never care for the thousands of children each year who need a safe place to live. Members of the community will be supporting these efforts when they participate in the KIDs Classic Dinner Gala. With your help, local families like Natalie’s will strengthen and get on their feet again. The Classic Dinner Gala is an evening of fun and entertainment with live music featuring Jimmy Stowe and the Stowaways, silent auctions with many wonderful prizes, followed by a live auction, dinner and dancing. Tickets are $150 per person and include cocktails, appetizers and dinner. The event supports the abused and neglected children of Florida. On behalf of the children we serve, we thank you for your gift! Change a child’s life…change a child’s future. For further information or to purchase tickets please
Members of the Kids In Distress Auxiliary are pleased to announce the KIDs Classic Dinner Gala which will benefit Kids In Distress (KID) on Saturday, March 6th, at 6:30 pm at the Bonaventure Hyatt in Weston.

Health & Wellness Is Your Marriage a Diamond in the Rough? By Alina Gastesi-de Armas, MA, MEd, LMHC
The diamond is associated with wealth, prosperity, social status, and, today, as the ultimate symbol of enduring love and commitment. According to the Gemological Institute of America, diamonds are graded by four characteristics: cut, carat (weight), clarity, and color. All four of these properties determine how much a diamond is worth. Cut Simply stated when cut properly, the diamond will sparkle more. Cut also refers to the shape. Carat How big is the diamond? Larger diamonds often cost more per carat due to their size. Clarity How clear is the stone? Clarity ranges from flawless (perfect) to I (included). Color Diamond colors generally range from D - X for white and yellow diamonds. D is the whitest. Around S they become “Fancy” yellow Diamonds. As a credentialed marriage professional I have developed my own 4C grading system. I evaluate marriages on their levels of commitment, ability to communicate, tolerance for compromise and their capacity for compassion. So how would your marriage measure up to these standards? What is the quality of your marriage? 1 Commitment – The process of commitment goes like this: commitment is initially declared “I want to marry you,” then promised, “I promise to stay married to you till death do us part,” and finally put into practice through daily words, deeds and choices. Too many people believe that after they have taken the necessary steps to secure a marriage commitment, they can relax in the comfort that their work is done. Unfortunately, when problems
occur and the intensity of commitment is tested the promises are questioned, broken, and eventually taken back—“I want a divorce.” Therefore, I measure the quality or “carat weight” of the commitment by the shared objective and responsibility between spouses on a daily basis {through the good, the bad and the ugly} to assist and invest in their own as well as their partner’s personal growth, development, and happiness. You see it does not count to only be committed to the relationship when things are going well or your way. Commitment is often tested and the strength of the promise is revealed by the outcome of that test. 2 Communication - Countless books have been written for and about quality couple communication. For brevity’s sake communication involves using the power of language to speak and listen with the full intent and desire to understand and be understood. In the initial stages of the relationship communication seems “flawless” yet with time, neglect and misunderstandings; what was once quite clear becomes “clouded.” Quality communication takes practice and determination; its results are priceless. 3 Compromise - Although it occurs in the daily lives of all couples, it is one of the most difficult tasks to master, as well as one of the biggest determinants of a quality marriage. Compromise is multifaceted. It involves allowing for things to get in the way of your ideal daily life for the sake of your relationship.

it’s their BUSINESS Bosa’s Back! GridIron Fitness Club Re-Launches Under Former Miami Dolphin John Bosa and GridIron Fitness Club are setting out to make a statement in Weston! “We want to provide affordable fitness to every single man, woman and child in Weston!” said new owner John Bosa, the former Miami Dolphin who launched the fitness club in 1994, and sold it in 2002. “And we have the facility, pricing, and staff to do it!” In the 1990’s, inside the 18,000 square foot facility located just off Indian Trace on North Park Drive, it was common to be working out side by side with NFL football players—and cheerleaders. Founder and then-owner John Bosa, a first round Dolphin pick in 1987, prided himself on the celebrity atmosphere, the unparalleled equipment, and the “rocking” atmosphere of GridIron. TV sports shows were filmed there. In 2002 Bosa sold all four of his locations, but jumped at the opportunity to buy back the Weston Club this year. “GridIron is an amazing complex,” said John. “We re-launched on January 1st. We have state of the art equipment, spin, aerobics, dance, personal training, everything. But perhaps over the years I was away, the club had lost some of its customer- friendly nature and cutting edge classes. That’s all changing now.” Changes are rapidly shaping up at the club. Maria Leon, a leading Aerobics instructor in South Florida, has just rejoined GridIron to help create the new and expanded Aerobics Program. A new pricing policy has been put in place that allows for the most affordable memberships for any budget, and gives special rates to teens on school teams. John has brought in several prominent personal trainers and is modernizing the spin classes. The child care suite now includes computers and electronic games. The outside of the building is going through a refreshening. “I want every single customer that walks in the door,” says John, “to feel like they are not only getting the most out of their workout and the most out of their money, but that they feel infused with energy and friendliness.” Sherrill Canet, a renowned interior designer from Manhattan and Palm Beach, is arriving to put the finishing touches on the interior and to re-do the women’s locker room. “Sherrill handles the mansions in Palm Beach,” said John. “But as a personal favor she’s helping me, as she puts it: ‘energize with the comfort that a woman would appreciate.’ Our female client base has already increased dramatically!”
68 February 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com
GridIron already boasts a new diet center. National diet program, Sci-Slim™, immediately opened offices in the gym when they heard Bosa had come back. “Our business is booming,” said Sci-Slim spokesperson, Geri Correa. GridIron is planning a Grand Opening party in April, complete with dance competitions, kids athletic activities, a $1000 Greatest GridIron Makeover Prize, and of course John’s friends from his days as a professional athlete. So we had to ask: What about the Dolphins coming back to GridIron? “One thing at a time,” laughed John. “I’ve talked to some of my former team mates, and they are as excited about GridIron as I am!”

it’s their business Dr. Faierman Helps Patients Look Good and Feel Better By Stacey Bomser
Dr. Tamy Faierman has always believed that true beauty is on the inside. That’s probably not what you would expect to hear from a well-known plastic and reconstructive surgeon. Not one to rush to surgery, Dr. Faierman’s “Refresh Your Image” philosophy promotes natural appearing improvements rather than drastic total change. Her emphasis is on providing patients with a youthful natural look. One of the ways she achieves this is through the use of injectables and other non-invasive procedures. “Today it is possible to get significant facial enhancement without a surgical procedure,” says Dr. Faierman. She personally administers Botox and Restylane treatments, chemical peels and a variety of laser treatments including IPL (Intense Pulse Light). These procedures can reduce wrinkles, tighten skin, clear imperfections and rid spider veins. Dr. Faierman has recently started offering vacuum therapy to treat cellulite and tighten skin. In addition, Dr. Faierman performs body contouring surgical cosmetic procedures. She is quick to point out that surgery is not a quick fix. “Most of my patients have maximized their results with exercise and weight management prior to taking this final step in attaining their optimal desired appearance.” Unfortunately, getting to that point is not easy. Dr. Faierman knows first-hand the struggles her patients face. “As a woman in her 40’s with five young children I know how difficult it can be. I have gained and lost almost 300 pounds over the years due to pregnancies.” She says she has tried the various weight loss programs, but could never keep the weight off after she went off the diet plan. “As a doctor I knew what I needed to do, but like everyone else, I was always searching for that magic pill, the quick fix for quick results. It doesn’t exist!” states Dr. Faierman. “The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to eat less and move more. You need to make permanent lifestyle changes.” Despite a busy schedule, she was able to commit to a program and make the lifestyle changes needed to have the results she desired. Now she’s ready to help the Weston community lose weight and get in shape by introducing a new Comprehensive Wellness Program. “I would never recommend a program I would not do myself,” notes Dr. Faierman. “This is no crash diet. Patients make a permanent lifestyle change using our comprehensive life-coach system which includes the 24/7 emotional support needed.” Patients begin by undergoing a thorough health risk assessment. We perform a body composition analysis according to the age, height and gender of the patient, review blood tests, perform a medical examination and evaluate lifestyle, including diet and exercise,” explains Dr. Faierman. “The results are used to develop a personalized wellness program incorporating diet, exercise and counseling.” Every aspect of the individualized plan is managed by a team of medical professionals. A nutritionist, personal trainer and psychologist are available, as needed, to provide patients with the much needed support to make permanent changes a reality. Dr. Faierman and colleague Dr. Marco Levy monitor the patient’s health and provide unconditional support. In fact, the Comprehensive Wellness Program is based on a similar program Dr. Levy used for over 10 years in Venezuela. “This program has proven safe and successful,” says Dr. Faierman. “Clearly, we are looking for at least a 50% patient cooperation and active participation in order to help them change negative habits into positive ones.” Diet is just one aspect of the Comprehensive Wellness Program. Exercise is equally important. Dr. Faierman has arranged for patients to receive special passes at
70 February 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com
the Midtown Athletic Club in order to incorporate exercise into their new, healthier lifestyle. “I am confident that we can help the Weston community reach their goals in this new year!” Although originally created to help patients prepare for surgery or maintain the results of a cosmetic procedure, Dr. Faierman says her Comprehensive Wellness Program is for anyone who wants to change their lifestyle and improve their health. “It’s not just about aesthetics,” she shares. “I want people to be the best they can be and that starts with getting fit and healthy.” Dr. Faierman truly cares about her patients. That’s one of the reasons she created the Comprehensive Wellness Program. It’s also why she gives all patients an unmatched level of attention. “I take a very personalized approach to medicine. I enjoy spending time with my patients and getting to know them and their needs.” Fluent in English, Spanish, French and Hebrew, Dr. Faierman is able to openly discuss treatment options and make sure patients are comfortable with their choice. This level of attention is one of the reason’s Dr. Faierman’s practice has been so successful. She believes the fact that she is the only female plastic surgeon in Southwest Broward County is another. “I offer a different sensitivity and different level of interaction than my male colleagues. I totally understand the stresses pregnancy puts on a woman’s body and how aging and hormone fluctuations affect appearance.” Dr. Tamy Faierman is focused on helping patients look and feel better about themselves. If you would like to “refresh your image” or enroll in the Comprehensive Wellness Program, call her office at 954-322-2741 to schedule a complimentary consultation. Office hours are Monday through Thursday by appointment. Dr. Faierman’s office is located in the Windmill Professional Campus at 17130 Royal Palm Boulevard, Suite 1. Home DÉcor Kill the Heat…Keep the View By Faryal Ali, Beautiful Windows
Do you know that on average we lose more than 50% of our home energy through our windows? We are throwing $$$ through the window glass. Fix it and stop losing money! How, you ask? With Duette Architella Shades. Cash in your pocket: Right now Hunter Douglas is offering a $25 rebate back on every Architella you purchase for your home. Imagine...install 8 Duettes and get a check for $200. How sweet is that? Tax Credit: Uncle Sam is giving you back up to $1500 in Tax Credit on Architellas installed in your home. Now is the best time ever to insulate your windows. You’re getting paid to install energy efficient blinds. Why is Architella special? The Architella is extremely energy efficient because it is constructed with a triple cell. When you look at it from the side you see 3 honeycomb looking cells. Each cell traps air. Air is a good insulator. So the more cells, the better your blind will insulate your windows. In winter the Duette blind keeps the heat in and it works the opposite on those hot Florida summer days by keeping the cool air inside the room and keeping the hot sun out of the room. Design Possibilities: Architella comes in a beautiful variety of colors and textures. You can find one that is formal looking and one that has a nice linen weave to it to coordinate with a more dressed down look. Block out the light: Excellent to create a nice dark room for sleeping in late or for your theatre room where you want to block out as much light as possible. Mix N’ Match with Sheer: The beauty of the Duette blind is that you can make 2 blinds in one. You can have the options of dropping down the opaque part of the blind during the day to let natural light in. However this natural light is filtered by a sheer Duette which helps
protect furniture and carpet from the UV. Then at night when you want more privacy, just close up the sheer part and the opaque part of the blind comes into view. You have to visit our showroom to see a real life display of this beautiful blind. It is extremely elegant and dressy at the same time. Come see why it makes sense to put the Duette blind on the inside of the opening and frame the window with flowing side panels to add that soft, cozy feel. Our experienced designers are ready to help you decide which is the best option for your window. Bring us some pictures and some measurements and we’ll be happy to show you the many, many options available in decorative blinds for your windows. Email Faryal at faryal@bellsouth.net with your “Help me with my window” questions. After designing Window treatments for over 17 years, she has the answers for you. it’s their business Indulge in a Bliss-ful Spa Day By Stacey Bomser
Bliss is a befitting name for the spectacular spa inside the W Fort Lauderdale. Utter bliss is exactly what you will experience when you undergo one of the sensuous spa treatments. From the Fully Loaded Facial to a Head Over “Peels” Scrub and Rub, Bliss boasts a cleverly compiled menu of tempting treatments.
recuperation includes a Herbie wrap-up, complexion revitalizing mask, 15-minute foot massage, anti-migraine massage, skin saving oxygen spray and your choice of Pure Inventions Green Tea Concentrate. Bliss even offers a selection of spa treatments just for men. The “Homme Improvement” is a masculine version of the Triple Oxygen Treatment. It includes lots of hot towels, a series of scrubs, a fruit acid wash and an anti-ingrown hair follicle calming mask. The “Manly-cure” includes a hot cream hand massage followed by a cuticle curtailing soak, clipping and pushing, nail filing and buffing. All treatments are performed by Bliss trained technicians. “They have all undergone the stringent Bliss training to deliver an unmatched level of service,” says Wilson. In addition, the technicians are all familiar with the extensive Bliss product line and can make recommendations on take-home products to purchase in the Bliss retail store. Bliss products are also available at Sephora and Neiman Marcus, as well as online. If you are ready to indulge in an in-spa-rational spa experience, try Bliss. Spa appointments can be booked online at www.blissworld.com or by calling 877-TOBLISS. The website also features information on the entire Bliss product line as well as current spa promotions. Bliss Fort Lauderdale offers 10% off during your birthday month or if you book your next appointment on your day of service. The Bliss spa is located on the third floor of the W hotel at 401 North Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard. It is open from 9am to 9pm daily. Spa guests enjoy complimentary valet parking.
“Bliss is definitely not your standard day spa,” says Micheal Wilson, spa director for Bliss Fort Lauderdale. “Bliss has more of a hip and welcoming feeling.” No sounds of trickling water here. Rather, Bliss features jazzy blues tunes. Don’t look for soft, serene neutral elements. The trademark Bliss touches are set against a retro 1950’s Florida décor. And forget about fresh fruit and herbal teas. Guests are invited to indulge in the legendary brownie buffet. Bliss is definitely not your spanext-door. From the moment you enter the spa, you know you are someplace special. Bliss features five really relaxing treatment rooms, a luxe nail lounge and an outdoor terrace overlooking beautiful Fort Lauderdale Beach. The locker rooms are an experience in and of themselves. They feature digital lockers, sand-tiled steam showers, saunas, sinkside sampling (the men’s locker room even offers heated shaving cream), plus fashion and beauty reading selections for women and sports magazines for men. Guests also enjoy spa snacks including olives or cheese and crackers. But, the real treat is the Bliss spa treatments, most of which are 75 minutes or longer. “These are your typical spa treatments with a Bliss twist,” explains Wilson. “For example, our best-selling ‘Blissage 75’ full-body massage includes a warm wax foot softening wrap and our ‘Pedi-Colada’ pedicure comes complete with a virgin pina colada to sip while your feet soak.” The facial and massage mecca features a sixteen page spa menu, so there is something for everyone. The “Triple Oxygen Treatment” is the most popular facial. This complexion reviver includes intensive cleansing, exfoliating, a fruit acid wash, a pre-extraction oxygen wrap, the necessary extractions, a calming oxygen and milk mask, hydrating enzyme pack and vitaminized oxygen spray. The “Ginger Rub” massage provides over two hours of pure bliss. It boasts a brisk rub of freshlygrated ginger root and warm detoxifying essential oils, a cozy warming foil wrap, a 20-minute soak and a 100-minute body-melting massage. The new slimming treatments are getting glowing reviews. “Fatgirlslim” is a detoxifying, circulationstimulating, body-toning treatment to get you looking your best before a night on the town. It starts with a dry brushing application of firming grapefruit essential oil, a trouble-spot-targeting seaweed task mask, a heated wrap, and a rubdown with waistwhittling Love Handler followed by Bliss’s famed FatGirlSlim. For the morning after a night on the town, book the “Hangover Herbie.” This perfect pick for post-reveling

lawn & Garden Do You Really Know What’s In Your Lawn? Over the years, people’s expectations of landscape standards have drastically evolved. However, these artificial expectations have come at a very high price. Record amounts of chemical fertilizers and pesticides are being used today in South Florida and in the shadows they are wreaking havoc on the environment and our lives. The abundant use of lawn chemicals are contaminating everything they touch and are leeching into our water supplies. These toxic chemicals and metals have adverse effects on the liver and kidneys and are linked to causes of miscarriages in pregnant women. In cases of extended exposure, the probability of developing cancer and other diseases are also greatly increased. Excess nutrients from chemical fertilizers are being washed away from their intended sources into accumulated bodies of water where they are spawning invasive growths of plants that are choking out the native species. Large growths of algae are also depleting the water of its oxygen, resulting in the inability of plants and other organisms to survive. These plants are the first stage of filtration for our drinking water and the foundation of life for the ecosystem that survives among them. Broad spectrum pesticides are also being applied today in record amounts and have no precedence of what they affect.Children, unborn fetuses, and pets are ten times more vulnerable to these toxins. So, how can parents feel safe about their loved ones on their lawns or parks when they know has been treated with toxic chemicals? The solution is simple; GO GREEN! Green Acres Organics, LLC was developed to meet the changing needs of an environmentally conscious landscape industry. Homeowners, businesses, and farmers are becoming more aware of the dramatic health effects caused by toxic fertilizers and pesticides.

Positive Parenting Random Acts of Kindness By Jodi Kurry Cohen, MS.Ed Director of Early Childhood Programs Temple Dor Dorim
Hear the words Valentine’s Day and we automatically associate the celebration with traditionally known romantic endeavors. The loving expressions penned on trademark cards… the roses, chocolates, heart shaped candies and of course the elementary school exchange of “will you be mine” mementos delivered to each classmate’s desk, have all become rituals in marking this holiday’s passing. Admit it…not only do we feel obliged to give our loved ones these tokens of affection, it’s EXPECTED that our significant other (ahem…men, listen up) make grand gestures in return. Whether we like or dislike it, choose to partake in or retreat from it, this is Valentine’s Day as we know it. I happen to like this Hallmark holiday but recently couldn’t stop the educator and parent in me from thinking about what an incredible opportunity this holiday could be for teaching our children a deeper, more intrinsic meaning of “with all my heart.” Aside from the token gestures our children have come to associate with Valentine’s Day, could

we create new traditions based on a grandeur gesture of what it really means to have a heart by helping others? Imagine, as Valentine’s Day is a holiday celebrated by men, women and children across cultures, all that manpower working towards a common cause by taking part in random acts of kindness and showering others less fortunate with all that affection? The possibilities would be endless! Let’s start on a small scale. This year, in addition to the usual valentine expressions and treats we bestow upon our immediate loved ones (hubbies, I said in addition to, not instead of), along with your family make the effort to extend your hearts even further. Bring your warm words or create cards and visit a senior center. Offer to help an elderly woman bring her bags to her car. Arrange with a nearby children’s hospital for you and your children to visit and read books or play games. Share kind words with a person who really seems to need a boost. Whatever your ideas, however simple or extensive, use this time as another opportunity to teach your children the many ways they can give from their heart. Caring & Sharing Continued from Page 28 smile. That includes Ben and Emily. “We do this for the kids. It really makes them happy and that makes us happy,” says Ben. Emily says it’s a humbling, yet gratifying experience. “Some of these children get so emotional. They are so proud of themselves. They tell us they want to be artists just like us.” She is hoping to one day expand Art Plus Heart to incorporate her musical talents. She plays percussion in the Cypress Bay band. “Music is another form of artistic expression and I think the kids would enjoy that as well.” In the mean time, Ben and Emily continue to look for opportunities to share their passion for the arts with special needs children in our community through Art Plus Heart.

the real deal on real estate Benefits of a Short Sale over a Foreclosure By Irene Torroella, Aleti Realty, LLC, Pembroke Pines
Losing your home to foreclosure due to failure to make your monthly mortgage payments is one of life’s most dreadful experiences and an event that will remain on your credit report for many years, thereby, terribly damaging your credit worthiness. Not only will you inevitably lose your home but a lender may place a judgment against you for the outstanding debt plus their expenses and legal fees. There is no benefit to foreclosure and it should be
prevented at all costs. After a foreclosure, you may be eligible to purchase a primary residence with mortgage restrictions after 7 years. However, after short selling, you may be eligible to buy another home with a Fannie-Mae backed mortgage within 2 years, regardless if the home is your primary residence or not. Today, short selling is a very popular option for homeowners burdened with increasing financial difficulties. In this situation, a homeowner would sell their home for less than they owe the lender and the biggest hurdle you will face is obtaining the lender’s approval. On the upside, any negative effects on your credit score due to short selling can be overcome significantly faster, especially if you retain other lines of credit – credit cards, car loans, etc. – and keep them current. Some homeowners have reported credit recovery as soon as 9 months after short selling. Often homeowners are reluctant to short selling because of a fear in tax implications, however, foreclosures are subject to the same rules and the main reason is because if you owe someone a debt and they forgive or cancel that debt, the amount forgiven can be considered income and may be taxable. The IRS usually considers the difference between the mortgage
balance and the amount realized from the short sale to be taxable as income despite the fact that a homeowner never sees a dime of it. However, the ‘Mortgage Forgiveness Relief Act of 2007,” which went into effect January 1, 2008, essentially eliminates this problem for many homeowners short selling. If you want to successfully short sell your home you should consult an experienced real estate agent who specializes in short sales. You will not incur many fees, if any, from most specialized Realtors, since they usually deduct their commission from the net proceeds of your home to the lender. Before making a decision of whether to short sell or foreclose, seek legal and tax advice. Irene Torroella is a licensed Real Estate Broker with Aleti Realty, LLC. She has been working in real estate for over 10 years and, in adjusting to recent market trends, is currently specializing in Short Sales. “Se Habla Espanol”. Legally Speaking How Much and How Long? By Evan Baron
There are two questions I am always asked at every initial consultation. How much will this cost and how long will this take? Unfortunately, I cannot answer either of these questions with any certainty. There are so many unknown factors which contribute to both the cost and the length of a dissolution of marriage. I certainly can try and give an estimate in order to try and answer these questions, but nobody knows the actual answer to either question. How long it takes to finalize a dissolution depends on the parties, opposing counsel and of course the Judge assigned to the case. Each county in Florida has a family law division. In that division are judges who are assigned to handle only family law cases. When a case is filed with the Clerk of the Court, a judge is assigned based upon a random selection process. Each judge runs there division in their own way. Some judges are more efficient in handling their case load and as such, matters are handled more quickly. This is an area in which an attorney has
no input or control. Sometimes it takes weeks to get a hearing date and sometimes it takes months. If the parties settle their case and enter into a Marital Settlement Agreement the case will be finalized much more quickly than if they are awaiting a trial date. Once an Agreement is signed by the parties, a Final Hearing can usually be scheduled within 2 to 3 weeks. How long it takes to reach a settlement is obviously the more important question. The sooner the parties settle, the sooner the case reaches a conclusion. The sooner the case reaches a conclusion, the sooner the parties stop paying attorney’s fees. The schedules of attorney’s and mediators also come into play. Often it is difficult to arrange a time when all necessary individuals are available. Conflicting schedules, due to other matters which are being tended to by the Court or opposing counsel can delay things as well. As you can see there are so many factors which can affect the “how long” part of the question. The “how much” question is totally dependent upon the answer to “how long”. Attorney’s fees are generally based upon the time an attorney spends on a case. The quicker it gets finalized, the less costly the case will be. It is sometimes difficult for a client to understand that it is impossible to predict an accurate answer to these two very important questions. I hope this sheds some light on why the answers cannot be given. The law office of Evan H. Baron, PA, is located at 1565 NorthPark Drive, Suite 100 in Weston. Pro Bono Immigration Help for Haitians By Elizabeth R. Blandon
The U.S. government is aiding Haitians in many ways after the devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010. Not the least of ways is by providing
immigration benefits, legal status and work authorization through Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Haitians must prove their nationality and entry into the country before the earthquake. However, they must file within 180 days. In an effort
88 February 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com
to help the community, our office is helping Haitians file for TPS relief as a public service. I speak French, which is one of the country’s official languages. Because I am an immigration attorney – as opposed to a notary or consultant – I can advise Haitians on other legal benefits that may be available to them as well as risks of applying. For example, a person with two misdemeanor convictions is ineligible for TPS. However, by arguing that a court disposition does not count as a conviction under the immigration laws, I can help a Haitian who thought s/he was disqualified. Representation at Citizenship and Immigration Service (CIS) interviews or before an Immigration Judge is another service that a non-lawyer will probably not provide. For Haitians living in the U.S. CIS has issued a memorandum that it will use its discretionary authority more leniently when reviewing (a) change or extension of status applications, (b) parole or reparole applications, (c) extensions of advance parole, (d) grants of work authorization for academic students, and (e) expediting the processing of certain applications. For Haitians living abroad. The Department of State and the Department of Homeland Security have authorized a humanitarian parole policy for certain orphans. In addition, they are also exercising broad discretionary authority to grant cases wherever possible. A person with two misdemeanor convictions is ineligible for TPS. However, by arguing that a court disposition does not count as a conviction under the immigration laws, I can help a Haitian who thought s/he was disqualified. To learn how the immigration laws affect you directly, contact the Weston office of Elizabeth Blandon, Esq., at 954-385-0157. More information on her credentials is available at www.Blandon-Law.com.

sports page Finding that Perfect Putter By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
Finding the right putter is one of the single most important aspects to becoming more consistent in your putting on the green. There are so many different variations and styles of putters today that can confuse the typical golfer into making the wrong purchase. Even on the PGA Tour you will sometimes see the past winner of an event even make an equipment change for the following week. Back when I learned the game of golf I was handed down a Ping putter, the Ping Anser, which was one of the first heel / toe weighted putters on the market. This allowed less twisting of the club face thru impact. Another variation of that putter was the Ping Pal that Tom Watson consistently won with for may years. These heel / toe styled putters were the choice of putters that most of the Tour pros were winning with from week to week. Then came the Ram Zebra putter that was a mallet styled putter that allowed you to change the weights in the putter to allow for slower or faster greens and to be faced balanced as well. I can go on and on all the different types of putters that I have tried and all the ones that have been introduced each year but the focus of this topic is to educate the you, the golfer, on finding the right putter that is out
there somewhere for you or that may be in your golf bag now. Does your putter fit for your style of putting? Is your eye over the ball at address? Is it the right size and correct lie angle? Is it too heavy or to light? You want to find a putter that is one that allows you to see the same line that your putting the ball on towards your intended target, in this case the cup in the putting green. The best way to start is to do a simple drill to see if your putter that is currently in your bag is the right one for you.
DRILL: Is your eye over the ball?
When you have addressed the ball, and getting ready to make a stroke back with the putter head, place a golf ball over your left eye (right eye if you are a lefty putter) Next, drop the ball down from your eye and see where the ball falls in relation to the ball on the green that you are about to make a stroke with. If your ball after being dropped from your eye lands on to top of the ball then you have the correct putter putter in terms of having your eye directly over the ball. If the ball falls and lands away from the ball then you either need to make an adjustment in moving your head position closer of further away from the ball
Health & Wellness Continued from Page 64 From the color of the curtains to the how many children you are going to have. Each person has their own ideas of their perfect scenario. The sparkle and brilliance in your marriage will be felt as each individual consciously focuses on compromise as the ultimate outcome of most scenarios. Remember every time the individual wins the couple loses, however, every time the couple comes up with a compromise the marriage wins. 4 Compassion - A deep awareness of and sympathy for, another’s suffering. Your spouse will fall short of your expectations, may break their promises, and may sometimes make, what seem to be, unforgivable mistakes. Once your spouse, the person who has wronged you apologizes, attempts to make amends and is contrite in doing so, the practice of your promise of commitment will be demonstrated in your ability to forgive them. Compassion occurs as a road to forgiveness. During this search each will need a great deal of empathy for the other’s suffering; whether you were the victim or the perpetrator of the wrong. When compassion is strong, you find yourself naturally desiring what is best for the other person, wanting at least to understand their suffering and ultimately desiring to alleviate it. This does not mean that in an abusive or addictive relationship that one feels that he or she must hold on to the other at any cost. Compassion is a healthy form of empathy not an excuse for codependency. The qualities of healthy marriages as with diamonds are not always visible upon first discovery. In fact, a diamond is intially found as a rough stone that requires specialized knowledge, tools, equipment, and techniques to reveal its brilliance as a gem. If your marriage needs some polishing be sure to call Alina Gastesi-de Armas, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, at A Place for Growth, 954-257-6393, or visit her website www.APlaceforGrowth.com.
or find a putter that will comfortably allow you to position your head directly over the ball. There are several ways to finding that putter that works best for you by trying a few different ones out on the putting green by process of elimination after as you visit your local pro shop. Ask your PGA Professional to assist you in custom fitting the putter that best suits you. They know how to custom fit you right there for the right height, lie angle, grip size and weight of the the putter that they have in stock or to custom fit order you one through their manufacturers custom fitting department. Even the worlds greatest players in the world have different putters that work best for them on any given day that challenges them on various greens that they face on Tour. community news TLC Films New Reality Show at Bonaventure Country Club On Saturday January 16, 2010 TLC Networks came to Weston for filming of their new National Wedding Reality show : “Four Weddings.” Local residents Natalie Ramirez and Tom Gugliotta
exchanged wedding vows at Bonaventure Country Club’s outside patio overlooking the golf course and lake views. Natalie and Tom were one of the lucky couples chosen for the new reality show on TLC. The show follows four brides who go to each other’s weddings and vote on the entire wedding experience. The lucky couple who has the highest votes wins an all-inclusive paid honeymoon trip. The couple chose an old Hollywood wedding theme wedding, with décor that was absolutely breath taking. Natalie and Tom worked closely on all the details of the wedding with Bonaventure Country Club Events Manager Patty Leon. The club was shut down exclusively for Natalie and Tom’s wedding. The guests entered the country club on the Red Carpet and were greeted by music from a classic jazz trumpet player. The romantic music and the beautiful candles in the lobby area set the mood for Tom and Natalie’s ceremony. After the ceremony, guests enjoyed the hour cocktail reception on the patio with special signature drinks, Fuzzy Navels and Mint Mojitos, that were picked by the bride. One of the many hors d’oeuvres that were served during cocktails were plantain towers
topped with duck in a sweet and sour sauce that was created by chef Luis Castaneda. Guests were surprised during the cocktail party when they spotted a decked out Marilyn Monroe impersonator mingling amongst the crowd. There were camera crews at every turn, filming every detail of the wedding and all of the guests reactions, particularly the reactions of the three other contestant brides. Being a competition for an international honeymoon between the brides, each of the brides had a vested interest in scrutinizing every detail of the wedding. In the end Natalie and Tom, with family and friends, showed those brides what was really important in a wedding - a loving and festive atmosphere. There was lots of eating, flowing wine service and dancing into the night. As Natalie prepared to leave, the cameras caught her hugging Bonaventure’s Banquet Managers Giovanna and Omar. She turned and blew a kiss into the camera saying that no matter what happens, she felt like the winner. She had the wedding of her dreams. The Bonaventure Country Club is located at 200 Bonaventure Boulevard in Weston. For more

Skin Problems...Ain’t It An Itch! By Dr. Peter Birzon, DVM
One of the most common and frustrating problems here in sunny south Florida is known as allergic dermatitis. This is a very broad term that means a hypersensitivity to many possible factors. Your pet’s skin can “overreact” to a flea bite, certain ingredients in the food and common environmental factors such as pollen, dust mites, mold mites, grass and many more. Whatever the underlying reason, it will cause their skin to break out in sores, scabs, crusting etc. and they will lick, bite, chew, scratch which in turn, allows the process to spread. A staphylococcus bacteria is usually active in these lesions and in some cases a yeast known as malasezzia can occur as well. These organisms add to the “itchy” sensation and can basically make things very uncomfortable for your pet. This is a VERY frustrating problem because it can occur over and over. Of course, some pets have it worse than others and some only have it at certain times of the year but many suffer from this throughout the year and it is extremely important to try and get to the root cause of the problem. As in human allergies, we look to control and manage the problem because it is rarely cured in the true sense of the word. At Indian Trace, we can identify the cause by performing certain fairly simple diagnostic tests such as skin scrapings, cytology, and cultures and sensitivities. We can also identify the allergens through blood tests and skin allergy tests. All pets should be on a monthly flea prevention such as Frontline or Comfortis. This can at least eliminate one factor. Hypoallergenic foods that contain no fillers, byproducts or grains can be very helpful in a lot of cases. Antibiotics and anti-fungal medications can eliminate the secondary bacteria and yeast. Medicated shampoos are very beneficial along with certain skin supplements (omega fatty acids etc.) to try and attack this problem from a multi level approach. Anti itch medications such as antihistamines (Atarax) and yes, even steroids like prednisone have their place in combating this problem if used properly. I think Atopica, a fairly newer drug, is one of the best medications on the market for skin allergies. It does not have the possible side effects of steroids and is extremely effective. Our goal at Indian Trace is to teach you how to control the problem by educating you to the cause and picking a treatment plan that is specific for your pet because his/her problem is unique and individual and should be approached from that point of view. Your pet does not need to “suffer” from allergies anymore. Maybe that should be one of your New Year resolutions? Let us know how we can help you! Dr. Peter Birzon, DVM has been practicing veterinary medicine for over 20 years and has owned and operated four animal hospitals in South Florida. Indian Trace Animal Hospital is located in Weston at 1420 North Park Drive. You can reach him at Phone: 954-384-7147. E-mail: indiantrace@petmedicalcenters.com. On the web: itah.vetsuite.com

TAX TALK Should You Consider a Roth IRA Conversion? By Todd R. Bomser, CPA
Finally we’re getting some good financial news. 2010 marks the first year in which taxpayers, at all levels of income, will have the ability to convert funds in Traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs. And, for the first time, this conversion is available to almost everyone, not just those making less than $100,000. But converting individual retirement accounts to Roth IRAs may not be for everyone. When evaluating your options you will need to keep in mind some of the risks, pitfalls and mistakes that could come with a conversion. While the conversion may not be for everyone, not doing anything might be a foolish move. It’s important to evaluate your options and the ramifications your choice will have on your tax plan. If your situation makes sense and you can pay the known tax today at a very low rate to get tax free income later why wouldn’t you do it? If your situation warrants, the question now becomes whether to convert it all at once or over a prescribed number of years. The second pitfall is converting when your tax bracket is likely to fall. It would be a mistake to convert your IRA if you are pretty sure your tax bracket will fall over the next few years. Before you do anything, make sure you understand the tax consequences of converting to a Roth IRA. One major mistake people make is neglecting to consult with their tax advisor and evaluating the long-term effects of converting. If you are not careful with your conversion the additional distribution from your traditional IRA could bump you into a higher tax bracket. Again, your tax advisor can prepare a projection of what your tax liability might be with a conversion. If you do decide to convert to a Roth IRA, make sure you do not have the taxes owed withheld from the transaction. If you withhold taxes, technically the payment can be considered a distribution rather than a conversion. This could then subject you to the 10% early withdrawal penalty. Another thing you want to beware of is converting to only one Roth, meaning lumping all of your conversion from the traditional IRA into a reclassified Roth. The IRS allows you to reclassify the traditional amount into as many Roth accounts as you want. One big advantage of owning multiple accounts is that you can always convert the Roth back into a traditional IRA if the value of the account falls below the original conversion amount. Finally, a big mistake people make is to convert an account and then forget it. Not watching the value or the investment mix is a mistake that could cost you money over the coming years. So, pay attention to your investment. If you have not already done so, now is the time to schedule a tax-planning session with your professional
tax preparer. Remember, you should always consult with your personal accountant before making any changes to your tax strategy. Todd R. Bomser, CPA, is a partner in Spiewak, Gottesman, Bomser & Company, PA, PA, a fullservice accounting and management consulting firm with more than 75 years of professional experience.
