f you equate plant shopping during summer with standing in full sun suffering from near heat exhaustion while staring at stressed plants on parched ground, you are in for a sweet surprise! Flamingo Road Nursery has just completed a total reconstruction of their 10,000 SF shade house. The goal of the project, which took 10 weeks to complete, is to make it the most shopper-friendly enclosed plant environment in South Florida. Most notably, the new screened roof features a space-age aluminum mesh developed in Israel which eliminates 90% of solar radiation. This shade is good for you and maintains the plants in superior health and appearance! Additionally, oscillating mist fans emit cool water vapor. All plants are displayed on custom built tables - allowing for greater organization and better presentation. And the beautiful new stamped concrete flooring includes underground drainage so feel free to shop in your high heels right after a downpour!

summer day amongst the flowers at your local independent garden center Flamingo Road Nursery! Last year, Flamingo Road Nursery received national recognition for a simple idea that is much appreciated by its customers - Complimentary Umbrellas! Just pick up an umbrella (pink of course!) from one of the conveniently located stands and you’ll have great sun or rain protection during your visit. The garden center also features over 500 feet of covered walkways, enabling guests to remain in the shade while strolling through the five acres. A “Kid Favorite” is the Cool Zone. This pergola with its built-in chilled mist system is a great way to cool off during a warm summer day. Who says outdoor shopping during August in West Broward can’t be fun? Finally, Flamingo Road Nursery offers delightful cool drinks and snacks in its air-conditioned Farmers Market. I’ts worth the trip for a fresh fruit smoothie, homemade lemonade or healthy fruit cup. And how about the award-winning chilled key lime pie or frozen bananas on a stick? Even the Boars Head Deli has cool summer menu items such as chilled soups and dips, fresh salads and wraps! For all these reasons and many more, don’t hesitate to enjoy a beautiful

Organizers are expecting about 50 entries in the parade including decorated floats, marching bands, police and fire vehicles, costumed characters and much more. The Arts Council of Greater Weston, Rotary Club of Weston, First Baptist Church at Weston and various Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops have already committed to march in the parade. “Weston – Sharing & Caring” is this year’s theme. It’s a chance for local groups and organizations to showcase to the community all that they do to benefit their neighbors, South Florida and the world. “Individuals and organizations in Weston give of their time, talents and resources regularly to benefit worthy causes and charities,” explains Don Decker, Weston Director of Parks and Recreation whose department is organizing the 2010 Weston Hometown July 4th Parade. “Whether it is the Sheinberg Family YMCA giving program scholarships to families in our community who are in need, Gator Run Elementary School students raising money for the relief efforts in Haiti, or the Rotary Club fighting polio around the world, these and similar efforts should be celebrated in Weston, a Community of Sharing and Caring.” It’s not too late to feature your favorite organization in the parade. All groups, businesses and bands are welcome. “Join us for a Fourth of July tradition, and walk or ride in Weston’s biggest and most exciting event of the year,” states Decker. Registration is free. School newS Sagemont Star Destined for Greatness at Syracuse

By STaCey BomSer

F

abricio “Fab” De Melo only attended The Sagemont School for two years, but in that short time he left a lasting impression. The seven-foot-tall basketball star brought national notoriety to the school and earned the respect and admiration of students and faculty alike. Fab was the “big man on campus” both literally and figuratively. At seven-feet and 250-pounds, Fab towered over his teammates and classmates. But it’s not just his size that turned heads. It was his skills as well. Fab was ranked as one of the top 20 high school basketball players in the nation and was selected to be a 2010 McDonald’s All-American. Courted by college recruiters from coast to coast, Fab has signed to play for basketball powerhouse Syracuse University next year. That’s pretty impressive for a kid who has only been playing basketball for a few years. Born and raised in Brazil, Fab grew up playing soccer. “I got too tall so my soccer coach introduced me to the basketball coach,” he explains, noting that he is still a huge soccer fan. He left his home and family in 2008 to perfect his basketball game here in the United States. He selected The Sagemont School because of its stellar academic and athletic programs, as well as the success of its international student program. He lived with a Sagemont host family. “It was hard to leave my family but I knew that coming to the United States would give me the opportunity to get a much better education that would give me better opportunities in life,” explains Fab. “At Sagemont there are kids from all over the world, so I felt very comfortable.”

Despite the homesickness, Fab felt at home on the basketball court. Sagemont Basketball Coach Adam Ross says he recognized Fab’s potential the first minute he saw him play. “Fab is an incredibly talented, very mature young man. He embraced our school and our team and was a pleasure to have here.” As starting Center, Fab led his team to the District title. Along the way, he set many school records. “I think I hold the school record for rebounds and blocks, but records aren’t important to me,” says the understated student. Instead, he is looking toward the future, namely playing college basketball and representing his country when Rio hosts the 2016 Olympic Games. “Right now, playing in the Olympics is my number one goal.” So be sure to remember his name. Coach Ross says he wouldn’t be surprised to see Fab playing in the NBA one day. “Fab has all the tools to play professionally. As long as he’s healthy and he continues to work like he’s working now, I honestly believe that he has a professional basketball career ahead of him.” He’s not the only one making predictions about Fab’s future. Sports Journalist Daniel Poneman wrote in First Look Basketball, “The Syracuse recruit is one of the most physically dominant prospects around, and has all the physical tools to one day be an NBA all-star.”

School newS Falcon Cove middle School Celebrates 10th anniversary

By STaCey BomSer

F

alcon Cove Middle School just passed a major milestone. The school hosted a special reception recognizing its 10 years of academic excellence. More than 200 members of the community attended, along with parents, business partners, administrators and faculty – both present and past. Seventh grade math teacher Jan Gentile has seen the school grow both as a faculty member and parent; she’s had two children graduate from the school. “Falcon Cove has been an amazing school from the very beginning,” states Mrs. Gentile. Of course, she admits she is a bit biased because she is part of the system and her kids are products of it. “I think I’m more appreciative of all this school has to offer because I see it from both sides.” Falcon Cove PTA President Maricel Mayol has also been involved with the school since it first opened. Her oldest daughter was a sixth grader back in 2000. She says from the very beginning Falcon Cove felt like home. “The importance, the dedication and the friendly environment that we have in our school are a few of the characteristics that make us feel that we are family,” she shares. “And at the same time, the kids receive an excellent education.” That is definitely true. The school has consistently been a top-rated school. This year, the school made a 21 point jump on the FCAT and was recognized as the number one cumulative point scoring traditional 6-8 middle school in the state. That’s quite an impressive feat.

Falcon Cove Middle School Community Liaison Jeannie Dempsey (left), Curriculum Facilitator Debbie Youngblood and Office Manager Anette Blanco enjoy the reception celebrating the school’s 10th anniversary.

Both Weston Mayor Eric Hersh and Falcon Cove Principal Mark Kaplan addressed the enthusiastic crowd gathered to celebrate the school’s 10th anniversary. “We are so proud of all of our staff, students, and parents for their hard work, dedication, and passion for our school and the quality education we have provided nearly 10,000 students for the past 10 years,” stated Principal Kaplan. “We look forward to continuing our tradition of high expectations and quality academic instruction as we head into the next ten years of our history.”

The Falcon Cove PTA helped host a reception celebrating the school’s 10th anniversary. Pictured here are members of the PTA Executive Board Kristin Miller (left), President Maricel Mayol, Patricia Soto, Natasha Samagond, Ana Maria Pol, and Jeannie Dempsey.

But, academics are not the only place where Falcon Cove shines. The school has earned some equally impressive accolades in terms of athletics and the arts during its first ten years. The athletic department has won a total of 36 Division Championship Titles and 17 County Championship Titles. The Falcon Cove Band has earned numerous awards including 146 Superiors this year alone. The band was also Grand Champions at the Fiesta-Val-Orlando. In addition, this year the band produced four All County Jazz members and three All State Band members. Some of these talented musicians were featured during the 10th Anniversary program. Other highlights from the event included performances by the drama club, chorus and cheerleaders. A time capsule was presented. Students voted and selected the most memorable items from the school’s history to include, such as Falcon Cove yearbooks from the past ten years, a copy of the morning announcements, a Falcon Feather (the school’s currency), and letters to the class of 2020, among other items. The event also included a rededication of the media center in honor of the school’s first principal, Steven J. Friedman.

ore than 1,000 people attended Imagine Charter School at Weston’s third annual Multicultural Night. “Art Around the World” was the theme of this year’s event. Classroom teachers worked in cooperation with the art department to create exhibits celebrating cultural diversity. Students and their families traveled the world within the confines of the school campus. These “tourists” had their passports stamped as they crossed from continent to continent, or building to building as the case may be. All seven continents were represented. A total of 24 countries were featured, from as far away as Australia and Kenya to our nearby neighbors of Canada and Jamaica. Each class, or in some instances pairs of classes, created an exhibit on their chosen country. Some teachers incorporated research on their country into the curriculum, studying the natural resources, industry, cuisine, art and customs. All of this was included in the elaborate exhibits which lined the school’s hallways. Many classes created hands-on experiences such as creating an origami craft in Asia, writing your name in Greek letters in Europe, and playing the game mancala in Africa. To represent Israel, second grade students built a replica of the Wailing Wall out of shoeboxes. Visitors were encouraged to write their own wishes on paper to add to the wall, just as worshipers do in Jerusalem. Fifth graders went all out when creating their Egyptian exhibit complete with replicas of the giant pyramids and a giant sarcophagus (stone coffin) created out of paper. That exhibit really impressed third grader Arianna Allen. “I loved traveling among the different countries and learning about their landmarks. I would like to travel to Egypt to see the giant pyramids in person.” Some of the other students were impressed with the natural wonders to be seen in different countries. “I would like to go to Canada to see a big moose,” said kindergartener Connor Schemel. Gabriel Fenster was so intrigued by what his second grade class learned while researching Israel that he would one day like to visit. “I was most surprised to learn that Israel can reach temperatures over 100 degrees in the summer. I would like to visit Israel so that I can float in the Dead Sea.” Because this year’s theme was “Art Around the World,” each exhibit also included an artistic display providing a glimpse into the country’s heritage. The students worked on these projects in class as well as in art under the guidance of the school’s

art instructor, Mrs. Jennifer Brittingham. In addition, as part of the Meet the Masters program, each class created and displayed works of art from a variety of international artists. Meet the Masters is a volunteer-led arts appreciation and awareness program. Throughout the school year, volunteers expose students to the masterpieces created by some of the world’s most famous artists. A scavenger hunt was incorporated into this aspect of the evening. Students searched for clues in strategically placed prints from the Meet the Masters collection. This was a huge hit, as the children worked diligently to complete their answers and win a prize. The evening incorporated a variety of cultural arts Carlos Alfageme, a student in the third grade bilingual got into the spirit of the evening’s “Art Around the including music, dance and class, World” theme. costumes. Guests enjoyed a selection of international dance performances ranging from flamenco to hip-hop, including an Indian dance performed by fifth grader Bhavesh Chhabra. Music teacher Cesar Taveras led the fifth grade class in singing “We Are the World.” He also led the international costume parade as it made its rounds of the school. Students and parents were encouraged to dress in ethnic clothing representing their class’s country or family’s heritage. The evening was a huge success. Attendees left with a sense of pride in the artistic abilities and creativity of the students and teachers at Imagine Charter School at Weston, and also with a greater appreciation for different cultures. The event was presented by the school’s Parent Teacher Partnership.

School newS Gator run Celebrates Specials at Spring Festival

here’s more to school than just reading, writing and arithmetic. Gator Run Elementary School showcased the Specials programs at its third annual Spring Festival. More than five hundred people showed up for an exciting evening focusing on the school’s amazing art, music, science, media, technology and physical education programs. PTA President Jamie Cohen says parents get a glimpse into what goes on in their child’s classroom on Open House night, but there has never been a program showcasing the Specials. So, this year it was decided to highlight these important programs at the Spring Festival. The event became even more poignant once the School Board began talking about cutting these programs to help balance The Specials teachers were honored during Gator Run Elementary School’s Spring Festival. Pictured from left to right are: Mr. Wiener, music; the budget. This program was presented by Coach Balogh and Broward community.” Sheriff’s Office deputies, who also provided helmet checks. In the Media Center, students shared the Reader’s Theater program with their parents. It is a valuable teaching tool which allows students to take virtually any piece of literature, analyze it and adapt it into a script. Fifth grader Selena Cline says that was her favorite part of the festival. “I got to see my schoolmates and friends interact and perform a preview of a book. I smiled the whole time and wished I could be up there and my parents were watching me.” Jodi Girard, mother of two Gator Run students, says the event gave her a greater appreciation of the school’s Specials programs. “I feel as if children need a creative outlet and the arts help children to be open to other ways of learning. It also helps them think outside the box when dealing with their regular school work.”

Gator Run Art Teacher Ms. Fletcher engaged students in a variety of art activities during the Spring Festival. Here, she poses with students Alex (left), Jeremy, Ethan and Zachary.

“I like Technology because I get to use a computer and that is a good way to learn to type,” shares second grader Lara Saade. Classmate Sarah Gibson prefers art class. “My favorite Special is Art. I get to express my feelings. I always draw what is on my mind. It is so much fun!” Each student had a piece of artwork on display at the Spring Festival. In addition, families could visit the art room to create cool recycling projects. The entire evening was filled with hands-on activities presented by the Specials teachers including science demonstrations. The winners of the school’s Science Fair were announced at the beginning of the event, following a presentation by the Gator Run Chorus.

y far, some of eBay’s top selling categories are High end Designer clothing, shoes, handbags, and accessories. Some our hottest selling items over the last 6 years have been new and pre-owned Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, Gucci, and many similar brands. Even when the economy seems to be in a slump, somehow someone is still always willing to indulge themselves buying high end luxury accessories. In the last week we have sold one previously owned Louis Vuitton handbag for $950 a Balenciaga City bag for $1350 and a Chanel new for $1630. Clearly there is a high demand. The buyers got a great deal and the seller now has some big cash in the bank. Just Sell It often will pay you cash for your items on the spot! Our customers ask if the items need to be new. New bags are great but most of the consignment handbags we sell are previously owned and in excellent condition. Even the bags that are in not such great shape sell as well, but for significantly less. Why not take a look in your closet and clean out what you look at every day but never seem to use or wear? The money you make can be used for something that suits you more at this time in your life. As always, consumer electronics like iPod, iPhone, Audiophile stereo equipment, and GPS devices sell quickly and for a lot as well. If you do not want to do it on your own, remember, Just Sell It can sell it for you or buy it outright and give you cash immediately.

School newS manatee Bay Family Fun Picnic Promotes School Spirit

By STaCey BomSer

A

lmost 2000 students, parents and teachers gathered for an afternoon of old-fashioned fun at the 8th annual Manatee Bay Elementary School Family Fun Picnic. School spirit was the name of the game at the annual carnival-themed festival sponsored by the school’s PTA. “The Family Fun Picnic is always our favorite event of the year,” says Manatee Bay PTA President Katie Dowe. “It is a great time for the Manatee Bay teachers, staff and families to come together outside of school and have some fun!” Hands down, the most popular attraction at this year’s festivities was the pie booth, a perennial favorite for both students and school staff. Brave teachers took turns in the hot seat as students took turns throwing pies at their favorite faculty members. “I loved being able to pie my principal without getting in trouble for it!” announced fourth grader Emmalee Forristall. Making its debut at the picnic was the Fear Factor booth. Here, brave kids tested their will-power, and gross tolerance, by holding their hand in a container of live worms for 30 seconds. Children could also conquer their fears by climbing the giant rock wall. Fifth grader Cameron Gatian says that was his favorite activity. “I loved the climbing wall. It was very challenging, so when I made it to the top I was really excited.” All in all, it was an amazing afternoon filled with fun-times and school spirit.

Manatee Bay Elementary School guidance counselor Geri Norris was a good sport for taking a pie in the face at the school’s annual Family Fun Picnic.

School newS indian Trace elementary Takes Top Two Places in national math Competition

By STaCey BomSer

Mr. Horowitz’s fifth grade class at Indian Trace Elementary School came in first place in First in Math, a national math competition. 1st Row - Left to Right - Marc Valancy, Andrew Galvez, Omar Pulido, Elizabeth Shin, Olivia DelGandio, Molly Hoffman; 2nd Row - Left to Right - Aidan Jennings, Hunter Rockley, Mariana Lacouture, Jenna Rabinovitch, Pablo Trivino, Kelcey Maldonado, Mr. Horowitz.: 3rd Row - Left to Right - Taylor Barton, Cynthia Rosensteel, Christyn Chloupek, Tyler Isbitts, Gal Levy, Julia Sigman, Alex Myers.

Mrs. Meis’ class finished second in the First in Math competition. 1st Row - Left to Right - Elizabeth Barbe, Alex Schein, Jack Golio, Mossimo Auvray, Matthew Jacobson, Nicolas Tellez; 2nd Row - Left to Right - David Williams, Reed Covitz, Rebecca Schecter, Kristin Maldonado; 3rd Row - Left to Right - Claire Stafford, Jack Lockwood, Gabriel Lozano, Amanda Zummo, Stephanie Stone, Ferhan Wasif, Jordan Prieto, Lucila Grinspan, Mrs. Meis. Not Pictured - Megan Meissner.

tudents in Mr. Horowitz’s and Mrs. Meis’ fifth grade classes at Indian Trace Elementary School learned a valuable lesson this year – that hard work and commitment add up to success. These two classes took the top two places in a national math competition. “We made history for Indian Trace!” exclaims Mr. Horowitz’s student, Marc Valancy. “It feels great to know that out of more than 37,000 teams, we have the top two teams in the country!” boasts Gabriel Lozano, a student in Mrs. Meis’ class. Mr. Horowitz’s gifted class came in first place and Mrs. Meis’ class came in second place out of 37,579 teams competing in First in Math. “It is an interactive math program that tests mastery of a variety of skills, from computation practice to solving algebraic equations, geometry questions, puzzles The top four First in Math finishers and more,” explains Mr. Marc Horowitz, fifth grade at Indian Trace Elementary School gifted teacher at Indian Trace Elementary School. were Kelcey Maldonado and Kristin Maldonado (back row) and Omar This was the second year Indian Trace Pulido and Elizabeth Shin (front row) participated in First in Math. Last year, Mr. Horowitz’s class placed first in Broward County and the State of Florida, and fourth nationally. Indian Trace also had the 12th place team in the country last year. Because the program was so well-received, the PTA purchased it for all third, fourth and fifth grade classrooms. The program is really quite unique. It is all done online. Students can play at school or at home. They earn points for each correct question. Overall, Mr. Horowitz’s class answered 750,000 questions correctly. Each student answered over 30,000 correctly. Two of his students went well beyond that. Out of the 742,017 students who participated nationwide, Elizabeth Shin finished the competition 33rd overall and Omar Pulido was 52nd. Congratulations to both of these exceptional math students on this amazing accomplishment. That certainly was a feat. The program is designed so that the math skills get progressively more difficult as the students advance through the levels. At the highest levels it challenges students to skills not typically learned until eighth or ninth grade. Elizabeth Shin, a student in Mr. Horowitz’s class, says once she passed Skill Set 6 the math became more difficult and the games more challenging. “Games such as Hex Factor and Into The Vortex got complicated.” Classmate Andrew Galvez agrees. “I did find Skill Set 8 as well as Into The Vortex challenging because I had to use algebra, square roots and exponents in order

to solve two and three step equations.” Mr. Horowitz says that is one of the aspects he likes best about the First in Math program, which he considers an enrichment tool. “By having the program I am able to have the students be exposed to a variety of curriculum that I may never be able to get to during the course of the school year. Students then will see a topic that they want to learn more about and will ask me questions about it.” Julia Sigman says playing this program really helped her in school as she learned new skills. Matthew Jacobson from Mrs. Meis’ class also noticed an improvement in his academics. “I enjoyed the problems where I was timed, as it helped me improve my skills.” While the students played individually, their scores counted toward their team. Mr. Horowitz says the competition teaches kids Indian Trace fifth graders Omar Pulido and Elizabeth Shin play Fractions More the importance of teamwork and dedication, in or Less and Into the Vortex. They were addition to math. “The students have persevered two of the top finishers in First in Math, scoring in the top 55 of all 742,017 for this long eight month competition and have students who played nationwide. realized that hard work does indeed payoff. Mrs. Meis and I have both been there to constantly motivate and encourage the students to achieve the best that they can be, yet I must say it is all the students’ hard work that has made this possible.” And, ultimately, that is the most important lesson any student can learn.

cover Story Doctors Santos and Gadh expand Services to Better Serve Patients

D

r. Jose Santos, Dr. Kompal Gadh and Dr. Sylvia Velarde are dedicated to providing the best medical care to women of all ages. This should come as no surprise to patients as they are Weston’s premier OB/GYN group. “We pride ourselves on patient service,” states Kompal Gadh, M.D., F.A.C.O.G, a partner in Gadh and Santos M.D., L.L.C. “You deserve comprehensive and complete attention to your medical needs, and that’s why we make sure every patient takes precedence over anything else. I am never too busy to see a patient or take her phone call.” This dedication to providing premier patient care is the cornerstone to this practice. Even though it is a group practice, each doctor attempts to deliver his or her own patients. “Our OB patients appreciate our commitment to providing personalized deliveries,” says Jose Santos, M.D., F.A.C.O.G. “We certainly encourage patients to meet the other doctors in the practice, just in case of an emergency, but all of our pregnancy patients have the piece of mind of knowing that their doctor will be there in the delivery room.” “All three of us are parents and have been on the other side,” explains Sylvia Velarde, M.D., F.A.C.O.G. “We understand the importance of the doctor-patient relationship and how important it is to a mom to have her doctor there when she delivers. But as a physician, I can also say that I want to be there. We develop a friendship with our patients over those nine months and I want to see the baby. Do they look like mommy or daddy? I want to know just as much as the parents.” That is also one of Dr. Gadh’s favorite things about the job. “I love what I do! There is nothing more rewarding than watching a baby’s first heartbeat on the ultrasound and seeing the family’s excitement and then delivering that baby into their welcoming arms months later.” The practice specializes in all aspects of obstetrics and gynecology. “We offer a full range of well-woman care, from routine check-ups and ambulatory surgeries to infertility and high risk pregnancy,” notes Dr. Santos, adding that the practice works with perinatologists in the Weston and Pembroke Pines areas to care for highrisk patients. In addition to complete gynecological care, the doctors also provide counseling on the various life cycle changes. Dr. Velarde has an interest in adolescent health and sees many teenage patients. “I try to spend extra time with them so that they feel comfortable enough with me to ask any questions they might have. Many times young girls prefer to discuss private issues with me rather than their parents. I am here to listen to them and provide guidance without judging.” The three doctors have known each other for over five years. Dr. Gadh’s first job after her residency was with Dr. Santos. And Dr. Velarde joined his practice after relocating to South Florida from Indiana. Dr. Santos has been in practice here in the Weston community for over twenty years. In fact, he was part of the first OB/GYN practice to open in Weston back in 1989. While the other doctors have either left medicine or the community, Dr. Santos is proud to continue to serve the women of Weston. “I’ve been in practice here so long I am now seeing a second generation of patients.” Ever since they first met, Dr. Santos and Dr. Gadh say they have been in sync. One of the long-term goals of each doctor was to offer aesthetic care to patients. “Patients have always asked me for advice on where to go for skin care,” shares Dr. Santos. “For a long time I have wanted to be able to provide this service. I consider it

a natural evolution as we expand to better serve the needs of our patients.” Dr. Gadh says she has also been interested in the medical aesthetics. “My mother-in-law is in the beauty business and owns Beauty Center stores in Weston Town Center and Davie. I always knew I wanted to open a med-spa and offer these services to my patients.” The two recently opened Allure Aesthetics adjacent to their medical practice. The full-service med-spa offers a private waiting room, consultation room and two procedure rooms. Allure Aesthetics is devoted to revitalizing skin, inside and out, with the latest in advanced medical aesthetic procedures and medical-grade skin care products for both men and women. A licensed esthetician works closely with each client to customize a treatment plan for healthier, more youthful-appearing skin. This may include the use of facials, skin rejuvenation therapy, chemical peels or injectables such as Botox, Juvederm and Latisse. “We offer personalized, non-surgical approaches to treat most cosmetic problems, but what truly distinguishes us is our medical knowledge, personal attention, and natural results,” states Dr. Santos, noting that all medical procedures, including injections, are performed by either he or Dr. Gadh. Patients have the confidence of knowing that their procedure is being performed by a licensed medical doctor who has undergone extensive training to perform these cosmetic procedures. “If anything, I think we are extra careful because we have so much knowledge of medicine and, albeit rare, the complications that could happen,” adds Dr. Gadh. Allure Aesthetics is excited to offer clients the revolutionary Sapphire Skin Rejuvenation Therapy. It is the only facility in West Broward to offer this unique microdermabrasion procedure. “This product is truly amazing. You can see the results immediately,” claims Dr. Gadh. “And the beauty of this therapy is that is good for everyone; it’s safe for all ages and skin types.” To further enhance patient results, Allure Aesthetics offers a private line of skin care products. These are all dermatological-grade products available only through a doctor’s office. “I have tried these products myself and the results are excellent,” states Dr. Gadh. In addition, Allure Aesthetics’ experienced esthetician performs a host of facial services, as well as waxing and pregnancy massage, a natural complement to the medical practice’s prenatal services. The med-spa will soon be offering laser therapy including hair removal and skin tightening. Both the OB/GYN practice and Allure Aesthetics are accepting new patients. Both offices are located with in the Town Center Professional Campus at 1601 Town Center Boulevard in Weston. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00am until 5:00pm. To schedule an obstetrics or gynecology appointment call (954) 384-2522. The doctors have another OB/GYN office at Memorial Hospital West, 603 N. Flamingo Road, Suite 360A in Pembroke Pines. Dr. Santos, Dr. Gadh and Dr. Velarde all have privileges at this hospital and all patients deliver at this facility. health & wellneSS When Back Pain Strikes…Who Should you See? By Dr. BroWner & Dr. BeHar

I

n a study entitled “The Manga Report”, prominent health economists Pran Manga and Douglas Angus of the University of Ottawa, Canada, found chiropractic management to be the best choice of health care for patients with low back pain - in terms of safety, scientific evidence of effectiveness, evidence of cost effectiveness and patient satisfaction. Commissioned by the Ontario Ministry of Health in response to that province’s staggering public deficit of the early 1990’s, this landmark document represents the largest existing analysis of the scientific literature on low back pain to date. The Report’s primary focus was to determine the most cost-effective health care service available for the treatment of low back pain. In an attempt to address the Ontario government’s cost saving concerns, the Report concentrated on comparing the value of chiropractic and medical management of this socially and economically crippling condition. The findings of the Report were based on a review of randomized controlled trials, case control/cohort studies, descriptive studies and meta-analysis/ literature reviews - in total, over 400 references concerning both chiropractic and medical treatment methods. The following are the key findings of this study: 1. On the evidence, particularly the most scientifically valid clinical studies, spinal manipulation applied by chiropractors is shown to be more effective than alternative treatments for low back pain (LBP). 2. There is no clinical or case-control study that demonstrates or even implies chiropractic spinal manipulation is unsafe in the treatment of LBP. Their

interpretation of the literature suggests that chiropractic manipulation is safer than medical management of LBP. Indeed, several current medical therapies of LBP are generally contraindicated on the basis of the existing clinical trials. There is also evidence in the literature to suggest spinal manipulation is less safe and less effective when performed by non-chiropractic professionals. There is an overwhelming body of evidence indicating that chiropractic management of LBP is more cost-effective than medical management. There would be highly significant cost savings if more management of LBP was transferred from physicians to chiropractic doctors. Evidence from Canada and other countries suggests potential savings of many hundreds of millions of dollars annually. Workers’ compensation studies report that injured workers with the same specific diagnosis of LBP returned to work much sooner when treated by chiropractors than by physicians. There is good empirical evidence patients are very satisfied with chiropractic management of LBP and considerably less satisfied with physician management. The use of chiropractic has grown steadily over the years. Chiropractic is now accepted as a legitimate healing profession by the public and an increasing number of physicians.

id you know that your skin is your body’s largest organ? It’s true. And while we generally focus only on making our skin look as good as possible, it’s even more important to keep the skin healthy. The good news? At Cleveland Clinic Florida, highly skilled dermatologists can help you achieve skin that’s as beautiful as it is healthy. “It’s surprising, but many people are unaware of how common skin cancer is, says Tamara Lior, M.D., MOHS surgeon and chair of dermatology at Cleveland Clinic. “Over 1 million cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed this year and about 20 percent of Americans will develop some form of skin cancer within their lifetimes. Even more troubling, melanoma is the second most common form of cancer in women between the ages of 20 and 29. “When detected early, however, skin cancer is very curable, Dr. Lior continues. “And because skin cancer is readily seen and easy to diagnose, it’s vital to have your skin checked from head-to-toe by a trained dermatologist on a yearly basis.

The ABC’s of Skin Cancer

Although only a physician like Dr. Lior can conclusively diagnose skin cancer, there are warning signs you should be aware of. “If you notice a mole with asymmetry, border irregularities, color variations or diameter greater than the size of a pencil eraser, it’s imperative to get it checked out as soon as possible, Dr. Lior explains.

estrogen — not Just your Wife’s Hormone! learn why estrogen balance is critical to men By Dr. Jean-ClauDe nereTTe

W

e often think of estrogen as a women’s hormone. It is not alarming that most men are not only unaware of having estrogen and the important consequences of having an estrogen imbalance. Doctors have known for years that men with either too low or too high estrogen (and often low testosterone) have a significant increase in atheroscierosis, stroke, coronary artery disease, benign prostate enlargement, prostate cancer, osteoporosis, and bone fractures. With this in mind, 99% of men today have no idea what their blood estrogen and testosterone levels are, which helps explain the epidemic of age-related disease that is affecting men’s health, families, and pocketbook. Top medical journals (i.e. Journal of the American Medical Association and The Journal of Clinical Endrocrinolody & Metabolism) have documented and published these findings. Why then are these test not performed during your annual physical? Below are some key points to known medical facts on the effects of estrogen/ testosterone imbalance. Stroke is the third leading cause of death and leading cause of disability. Abnormal blood clotting in the cerebral blood vessels is the most common cause of stroke. Excess estrogen promotes abnormal blood clots. In a recent study of 3,014 men, those men with low estradiol and testosterone levels had a 96% increase in mortality rate compared to men in the optimal ranges of testosterone and estradiol. According to research, men with coronary artery disease had low testosterone and high estradiol levels as compared to the healthy age- matched control of men. Thus showing a significant positive correlation between low estradiol levels and the promotion of atherosclerosis in men. High estrogen levels have been related to an increase proliferation of stromal cells in the prostate gland causing the many urinary discomforts associated with Benign Prostate Enlargement. In men with low estradiol levels, hip fractures were more than three times higher to occur than compared to men with normal levels. In addition, men whose estradiol and testosterone levels were both low these men were 6.5 times more likely to have a hip fracture. Men produce estrogen by a process involving an enzyme called aromatase that transforms testosterone into estrogen. Unfortunately, older men have a higher aromatase activity, therefore reducing the already low testosterone into a high harmful estrogen. Fortunately no matter what the underlying cause, aging men (greater than 35 years old) can easily achieve optimal testosterone and estrogen levels. As an Anti-aging/Wellness physician, I feel that it is important to treat the whole individual, addressing what is required in order to live an optimal life. Once an imbalance has been identified, replacing the appropriate hormones using BioIdentical Hormone Pellet Therapy will help to achieve the necessary levels to increase testosterone levels without the need for daily gels or injections. In addition, it may be necessary to block the conversion of excess estrogen which is usually done in the

Bio Identical Hormone Replacement Hormones do not decline because WE age. WE age because hormones decline. SAY NO! Let us explain how Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy will CHANGE the “QUALITY” of your LIFE, for the REST of your LIFE.

MEN, If You Suffer From: • Decreased Sex Drive • Erectile Dysfunction • Loss of Muscle Tone • Increased Belly Fat • Poor Concentration WOMEN, If You Suffer From: • Hot Flashes - PMS • Pre/Post Menopausal • Excess Body Fat • Mood Swings • Bad Skin Both men and women who suffer from hormone imbalance have many of the same symptoms and complaints. Anxiety • Irritability • Loss of Energy Depression • Osteoporosis

Benefit of sottopelle therapy vs. pills, patches and creams: Normal levels of each hormone are achieved in the blood utilizing very low dosages of each hormone. Sottopelle Therapy releases hormones directly into the blood stream, thereby bypassing the liver. Sottopelle Therapy is the only form of hormone therapy that can release more hormones when the body demands it. Sottopelle Therapy is made of pure crystallized, biologically identical estradiol and testosterone.

Helpful Weapons for the Battle against the Teen Power Struggle By alina GaSTeSi-De armaS, ma, meD, lmHC

I

f you are the parent of a teenager you are probably no stranger to the roller coaster of emotions that are characteristic of this age group. You are your teen’s best friend one minute and their worst enemy the next. These struggles also may come with the shock of your own emotional reactions. You may find yourself challenged by your ability to control your own temper when your teenager gets angry. You may be troubled by feelings of guilt following an argument even though you intellectually understand that your teen is being unreasonable. There may be pangs of worry you grapple with over whether or not the limits you are setting are too strict or too permissive. Consequently, you may wonder where your sweet child went or-- even, where you went wrong. Rest assured you are not alone; welcome to the world of the teen age power struggle. This is all normal behavior and these are all normal feelings. The intensity with which teenagers are dealing with and expressing their feelings can easily send the most “Zen-like” of parents into a frenzy. No matter if you understand adolescent’s development inside and out, this struggle takes no prisoners, teenagers fight to win their independence, their freedom or whatever else they feel they are entitled to. The key word is fight. You will get angry, frustrated, and yes, your feelings will get hurt. The battle is on and your best defense against this power struggle will be the weapons of consistency, awareness and communication. Be consistent: Choose issues wisely that follow a logical theme, for example, safety, respect and/or responsibility; make sure that your teen knows what your specific boundaries are around those specific themes. Inherent in living with a teen is the potential for daily upheavals, quarrels, and little fights in an attempt to engage you in a power struggle. Avoid this invitation by letting go of trivialities and refocusing on consistent specific premises and “don’t sweat the small stuff.” Use HYPERLINK “http://parentingteens.about.com/cs/disciplin1/a/consequences. htm”natural, logical, and enforceable consequences to offenses. Be firm and stick to them. Determine limits before giving the privilege since limits are much easier to administer and enforce than consequences. Let your motto be “With each piece of freedom or independence comes a bigger piece of responsibility.” awareness: Teenagers are notorious for last minute plans that are often poorly thought out leaving holes for mischief and even danger. Have a “Go-To Plan” when caught off guard by a request. Let them know you expect them to be forthcoming and that you will not be afraid to check out stories, talk over concerns with your spouse, family members and/or other parents and ask enough questions to get the full picture of what they have planned. Your teenager’s sense of urgency must not deviate your quest for information. Assure your young person that your job is to keep them safe and that that may even be from themselves. Communication: Learn to speak in a calm but firm tone; once the yelling and screaming have begun the communication lines have shut. Use a variety of methods to remain emotionally cool and keep the lines of HYPERLINK “http://parentingteens. about.com/od/talktoyourteen/”communication open: Take deep breaths, count back from 100, take a time out and remember the goal is to stay rational while helping them to make good choices. You still have the ability to say “NO”, so go ahead and listen to what they have to say. With a front-line of calm, consistent detachment, you’ll be surprised how many power struggles can be avoided. Whenever possible, let the teenager be a part of the decision-making process. While you may not be willing to give as much as they want, discussion and negotiation are important techniques. efining what is beautiful proves to be an elusive task. There is not a universally agreed upon set of characteristics that defines beautiful. Yet, there is a common thread to the myriad of qualities we call beautiful and it is harmony. Harmony, the congruent arrangement of parts, can be both defined and measured. The practice of cosmetic dentistry is not based purely on intuition but a concentrated focus on the lower one third of the face where the eye is drawn when assessing beauty. In cosmetic dentistry, aesthetic results are impacted when this concept of proportional beauty and balance is employed.

Do you Have Smile Harmony?

To evaluate your own smile, look in a mirror and ask yourself the following questions: ▸ How many teeth do you show with your best smile? ▸ Do your teeth appear to be too dark or discolored? ▸ How would you describe the color and shade of your teeth? (Ex: very white, moderately white, yellow, brown, grey) ▸ Do you have spaces between your teeth? ▸ Do your gums show when you smile? Are you happy with the amount that shows?

Smile Solutions

If you are not happy with your answers, a professional smile evaluation will help you to assess your options for improvement. Function remains a critical element of Cosmetic Dentistry but advances in materials and technology now make it possible to achieve both form and function. gummy grin. orthokeratology

O

By Dr. Jane THerrien

rthokeratology is a revolutionary process that allows the patient to enjoy clear vision during the day without glasses or contacts. It is non-surgical, reversible and safe for children.

How does it work?

Wavefront Corneal Molding uses a contact lens to gently shape the eye while your sleep. When you awake in the morning the mold is removed and clear vision is enjoyed through the day.

Who is this for?

Primary candidates are children and youth who are near sighted. There is evidence that orthokeratology canslowchangesinprescription, preventing major refractive error in adulthood. Furthermore, those who want to be free of glasses or contacts for sports, convenience etc, are great candidates for orthokeratology

60 June 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com

What is the process?

We will perform a comprehensive eye exam to determine your eye health. A custom lens is created using our Scout Topographer and Wave Software. A few nights of wearing your lens and you are ready to enjoy clear vision free of glasses and contacts. There is growing evidence that orthokeratology can slow the progression of myopia. This is an exciting development in a world where the incidence of myopia appears to be increasing. Researchers at the National Eye Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, found that rates of myopia — also called nearsightedness — in people ages 12 to 54 increased from 25% in 1971-72 to 41.6% in 1999-2004. The study included people with a range of myopia, from mild to severe. For a free consultation you can reach Dr. Jane Therrien at Weston Family Eyecare, 4472 Weston Road, Weston 954888-9393. Dr. Jane Therrien and her staff look forward to exceeding your expectations!

FitneSS Forum no Diet and 20 People lose over 300 lbs By ellen laTHam, mS

llen’s Ultimate Workout Studio in Davie, voted BEST FITNESS STUDIO has been selected by the Ascente Group to be franchised nationally and internationally. The first studio opened six weeks ago on 17th St. Causeway in Ft. Lauderdale. To further document that Ellen’s Ultimate Workout was the most successful fitness workout across the US, the new studio which is called “Orangetheory Fitness” took 20 individuals who needed to lose between 15 and 100 lbs. For 6 weeks they had to take the Ultimate one hour workout 4 to 6 times a week along with completing a daily food diary that was assessed by our studio’s Food Coach, Bea Metz. April 24th marked the six week mark and the weight loss statistics were outrageous. The male who lost the most weight was forty, used to play sports, boxed and was in good shape but fell out of shape. Work, family and stress took its toll (how familiar that sounds, right?) He lost 48lbs in six weeks. Mike Pontorno tells us that he did the Ulitmate Workout, sometimes twice a day, one class in the morning and later an evening class. He kept saying over and over, “I finally found a workout that got me into the best shape of my life - quickly!” Melissa Garcia, the female who lost the most weight is a graduate student with the stress of going to school and holding down a job. She felt the best part about this workout class was the coaches (instructors). “They had compassion and knew exactly what to say to keep me going.” With 55 fitness classes a week, she could always find an hour to get to the studio for a workout. She loves being down 24lbs. in only six weeks. This workout is based on the new cardio training techniques which not only burns

62 June 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com

calories during the workout, but has what is called afterburn, which means Mike and Melissa kept burning a ton of calories throughout the 24 hours after the workout. The lesson plans are all exercise-science based and have been producing great results. Many times in exercise, it is not what you do but how you do it and The Ultimate Workout uses every minute of the workout efficiently. The remaining 20 contestants included a group of mothers that tried everything but could not get the baby weight off, a gentleman in his 60’s who knew if he did not do something about his weight and fitness level he would be spending alot of time in doctors’ offices throughout the next ten years. But the most exciting client was a big time lawyer in Ft. Lauderdale who lost his energy and zest for life. He loves his new energy and ability to “play with his kids”. Now his clothes fit better and everyone is asking him how he did it because he has not moved a muscle in his body for the past 15 years. Wow! He lost over 20 lbs. - another success story. If you have been avoiding exercise or have tried different kinds of programs and found that they did not work then The Ultimate Workout is for you. Men and women from ages 16 to 80 take part. You have to make the decision inside yourself that you are sick and tired of living in a body and life that is dragging you down. We have set up a program to make it as painless as possible. Call today 954-472-9440 for your complimentary class. Also leave your name with the desk if you are interested in being a part of our next Biggest Loser program. taX talK Clearing up the roth ira Conversion Confusion By ToDD r. BomSer, CPa

L

ately, the Roth IRA conversion has been the talk of the town, at least in tax and financial circles. Every day we get calls from clients confused about the rules and not completely certain of what the conversion really means to them. In this article I will try to clear up some of this Roth IRA conversion confusion. rules on income Limits. Whether you are filing as an individual or married filing joint, the adjusted gross income level of $100,000 will become nonexistent for the Roth IRA conversions of 2010. For higher wage earners, this is a prime opportunity to convert money into a Roth IRA in order to allow your money to have tax-free growth at retirement. 2010 is the year, but not the year the tax is due. While 2010 is the actual year that you will be able to convert, the income to be claimed can be deferred until 2011 and 2012. Expecting a vast majority of Americans to take advantage of this, the IRS has set up special provision on how the tax will be paid. The IRS has granted you the option to claim 50% of the conversion amount as income in 2011 and the remaining 50% in 2012. Keep in mind that this “offer” is only valid this year. After 2010 the taxes will all be paid in full the following year going forward. If you elect to pay the tax over the two year period, keep in mind that the tax rate is determined for that year only. For example, in 2011 you will pay the tax based on your tax bracket for that year. If your income were to somehow skyrocket in 2012, then you will be paying more in taxes that year for the conversion. What if both a husband and wife want to convert? Each IRA is tied directly to the Social Security number of the account owner. What that means is that if a husband wants to convert his IRA and the wife does not, that’s okay. Further more, if both spouses want to convert, then the husband can choose the two year option on paying the tax and the wife could choose to pay her tax in 2010 (or vice versa). If you are converting multiple IRAs you must be consistent. For example, if the husband has multiple IRAs that he is looking to convert, he can’t choose to pay the tax this year on one IRA and defer the other IRA for 2011 and 2012. you can save taxes now. If you know that you are going to convert an IRA in 2010, it might make sense to go ahead and start accumulating the tax money now. Since you will be taxed at your ordinary income level, you can get a sense of what your tax bill will actually be at the time of conversion. So, why not add a little extra to your emergency fund to insure that you have enough to pay the tax bill come next April? Convert but Can’t Contribute? Just because the conversion limit of $100,000 adjusted gross income is lifted, doesn’t mean that the income restrictions are lifted for new contributions into the Roth. If you are over the phase out limits of the Roth IRA contribution, you will not be able to contribute new money to the Roth. However, there is a backdoor approach that allows you contribute to a non-deductible IRA and then immediately convert it to a Roth IRA and avoid all taxable consequence. It’s a nice loophole that still allows you to continue to contribute to the Roth and benefit from the tax-free money. It is important to keep in mind that if you have pre-tax traditional IRAs already established, the IRS will treat all of them as one IRA in the conversion process and you may have to pay a pro-rata tax on the non-deductible IRA. Convert traditional iras and old 401(k)s. The 2010 conversion is not limited to just a traditional IRA. If you have any old 401(k)s or any other retirement plans from a previous employer, it might be a good idea to convert them to a Roth IRA. Be conscious if you are converting after-tax contributions in a non-deductible IRA. The tax rules regarding this can get a bit complicated. It is probably in your best interest to consult your professional tax preparer before you make any moves. That being said, the rules regarding Roth IRA conversions are quite complicated. If you are unsure, consult your CPA to ensure that you stay within the guidelines and properly calculate the tax due with the conversion. This will keep you from making a costly mistake.

haute hair Hot Hair Trends for Summer 2010, and how to get them right now! By Helen CHarleS

O

kay, so you have got the buff, bronzed beach body sorted — make sure your strands look super sexy for summer, too!

Short & Sexy

Short looks will see lots of texture for the season ahead with choppy cuts and funky styling being the prominent trend. Versatility is the key, so make sure you ask your hairdresser to help you with a style that can be worn in a multitude of ways. Whether you go for sharp and edgy or bed head messy make sure you find your

product to help you create the look. Here are some excellent finishing products. For support with fine, short hair try Fiber from American Crew. For a sleek back version of short, use Rene Furterer Straightening Gel. Messy, long hair can be dressed with Rene Furterer Karite serum, and an excellent product for keeping long hair looking hot on the beach is Goldwell’s Je Voux mud mask.

Long & Lustrous

Summer 2010 is all about movement. Casual soft cuts that allow the hair to be softly pinned up or worn down and free, are all the way to go. Loose, wavy curls with beautiful bounce are becoming very popular and today’s modern soft perms are also very much on the cards. A curling wand like the BaByliss Porcelain Curling Iron is the ideal tool for quick creation of a range of curls. Make sure you choose a larger-sized wand and keep in mind the longer you hold the hair, the longer the curl will last. However remember to choose a good quality heat protection product before styling to avoid damage. An excellent example of these products would be Kerastase Solaire range.

Summer Shade Sensation

Once again as the sun warms up, the blonds will come out to play! Gorgeous golden locks are always a big hit for the summer and this year is no exception. Darker honeys, beautiful beiges and platinums will be used to create sizzling sun-kissed looks. It is out with the highlights and in with the multi-tonal global effect, achieved by panels and slices of similar colors, giving a full finish color that is sure to make a statement in the new trend. It is always helpful to cut out images of celebrity hair to get inspiration for yourself and to transfer that wish to your hairdresser’s creativity.

Summer Hair – Do’s And Dont’s Do:

▸ Make sure your hair is in great condition with a regime of masks and leave in treatments. Getting your hair healthy before the beach season will help reduce future damage. ▸ Use a particularly good shampoo and conditioner. Sun-specific ranges are best but otherwise look out for deep conditioning products or lines designed to infuse hair

66 June 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com

with moisture. ▸ Always ensure you wash your hair as soon as you are out of the pool or end of the beach day.

Don’t:

▸ Forget to keep hair protected whilst on the beach. Pop an intensive oil treatment and leave it to do its magic. ▸ Think a hat is the only answer. Another stylish solution would be to try a bun or braid or even incorporate a hair band or scarf. ▸ Have your hair colored just before or on the day you go to the beach. At least two washes before you allow chlorine or salt water to penetrate in to your hair will ensure less fading.

caring & Sharing Pediatric associates Doctor returns from Haiti

P

ediatrician Robert Perello, M.D. recently returned from a weeklong medical trip in Haiti. He calls the experience the most intense, exhausting of his life. He also calls it “the most rewarding and beautiful, too.” He has resumed his daily routine treating patients in his Pediatric Associates West Kendall office, but at night, sleep is hard to come by. His mind drifts back to the ravaged country neighboring his native homeland of the Dominican Republic. His thoughts are vivid and haunting. He feels guilty and angry wondering what will happen to the people he left behind. “You come out emotionally and physically drained because you leave the children in the misery and poverty that still exists in that country,” recounts Perello. “We treated them and then discharged them back into the cruel world of homelessness in a decimated city. The lucky ones get into one of the tent cities, but most of go back out to wander the streets.” Dr. Perello went to Haiti through Project Medishare, a non-profit group founded in 1994 by University of Miami School of Medicine physicians Drs. Barth Green and Arthur Fournier, to provide and share medical knowledge and services to Haitians. Dr. Perello is the first of four Pediatric Associates pediatricians scheduled to join the medical program, which recruits doctors from all over the world to provide medical attention to earthquake victims at what now is the country’s most state-ofthe art hospital-- set up on the grounds of the Port- au-Prince International Airport. Four large tents, donated by former Miami Heat player Alonzo Mourning, make up the airport hospital. One houses supplies, another personnel, one is for adult medicine, the fourth for pediatric care. The pediatric tent houses pediatric inpatient care, an operating room, a neonatal and pediatric intensive care unit. It is staffed by rotating groups of pediatricians, pediatric surgeons, orthopedists, ICU, NICU and ER nurses. On his stay, Dr. Perello lived in the tent along with 140 other doctors and nurses of multi specialty and multi-national backgrounds. The week he was there, there was a large group of doctors and nurses from California, including Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and Rady Children’s Hospital, of San Diego. Privacy doesn’t exist at the airport hospital erected after the earthquake. But within a day or two of one’s arrival neither did any inhibitions, says Dr. Perello. Personnel slept inches apart from each other on army cots. Showers were set up outdoors, urinal stalls were created from pieces of wood. Everyone dressed, ate, slept and bathed in front of each other. Food was limited. Both patients and doctors ate the same food--rice, spaghetti, corn meal, a plantain or two. Proteins are all but scarce. A can of Vienna sausage was a prized possession, he said. Bottled water ran out quickly and Dr. Perello depended mostly on the local tap water that was filtered through a solar-powered devise. In one week, he dropped 12 pounds. “The patients were grateful for anything. I brought two bags of lollipops with me and I would do ‘lollipop rounds’ in the evenings. The Haitian people might be perceived by some as being stoic and unemotional when confronting pain and suffering, but they are wonderful people. They have been through so much. They are very appreciative of our help, but to them death is a part of everyday life.” Dr. Perello worked seven days straight, treating children with all kinds of illnesses and trauma he has never seen before. Typhoid fever, severe burns, meningitis,

amputees. Each day brought new patients and new circumstances. “I had a 16 year old homeless girl who conceived a baby through rape bring me her newborn child. After I discharged the baby, all I could think about was what would become of her, would she be raped again? Would she find food for her child?” he said. “Another baby was brought to me by a thin grungy looking American man wearing a baseball cap. He explained to me that the baby’s mother tried to poison him with Clorox. It was thought she was trying to kill him in a twisted act of love--saving him from a life of misery. “ This was the first trip of this nature for Dr. Perello, but not his first exposure to Haiti. About five years ago, his best friend Hugo Diaz, M.D., urged him to donate time and money to a Haitian orphanage, Haiti Home of Hope, which had been operated through a sister church of Miami Christian Baptist Church, where he belonged. The orphanage was not damaged during the earthquake, but it has grown beyond its capacity taking in hundreds of orphaned children. “There may have been 200,000 people lost during the earthquake, but more than 300,000 are estimated to die from hunger and disease according to the U.N.,” Perello says. “And I can’t help but feel angry. Misery is persistent. The press has left to follow the next big story. Conditions at the hospital camp are deteriorating. I’m lucky because I get to come back home, but what will happen to the people I met in Haiti, I ask myself.” When asked what he missed the most about home, Perello said his family. The father of three shared his album of photos with his children, ages 22, 15 and 13, and some of their friends, in an effort to have them become less affected by material things and understand the pain existing in other parts of the world. He plans to take his children to visit some of the Haitian orphanages during the summer. Dr. Perello gives a lot of credit to all the people around the world who have given their money and time, especially that American man who brought him the baby who digested Clorox at his mother’s hand. Turns out that it was actor Sean Penn, though at the time of their conversation it wasn’t about celebrity, it was about humanity. Penn runs a refugee camp in Haiti. When packing to return back to Miami, Dr. Perello decided to leave behind most of his possessions. Maybe the Pediatric Associates scrub top he wore would become a dress for a little girl, his baseball cap could protect a young boy from the sun, his sneakers and sandals could go to another man who might be barefoot. “While it was the hardest experience of my life, it was the most rewarding. It was so overwhelming. But our group has remained close and we are in touch, sharing our thoughts and never forgetting the people of Haiti.” Robert Perello, M.D. is a primary care pediatrician with Pediatric Associates, South Florida’s largest privately owned pediatric practice, which has been caring for infants, children and adolescents since 1955. His primary office is at Pediatric Associates West Kendall at 13734 SW 56th St. Miami, FL 33175. For a patient appointment with Dr. Perello, call 305-387-7211. The Weston office is located at 1835 N. Corporate Lakes Blvd. in the Weston Medical Park, phone 954-389-7000.

t Lady of America, workouts are geared specifically for females. From the specialized cardio equipment to the full line-up of fabulous fitness classes, it’s all designed with women in mind. Lady of America has been faithfully serving the women of Weston for over 12 years. It has moved and improved as the community has grown, but it has never lost sight of its original goal – providing a premium fitness facility exclusively for ladies. General Manager Diana Gonzalez has been with the gym since it first opened. She says there have been some recent changes, including new owners Simonella Alzuru and Giancarlo Pierleoni, and now the gym is better than ever. “We have new ownership, a new atmosphere and new energy,” states Diana. “If you have never tried Lady of America, now is the perfect time to join.” The beauty of Lady of America is that there is no long term contract and no down payment. “You pay by the month, with prices starting at just $24.95,” explains Diana. “And that’s all-inclusive. You have full use of our state-of-the-art exercise equipment, access to dozens of different workout classes, plus free babysitting in our safe and secure child care room.” The only thing not included is the spin classes which charge a nominal $5 fee to cover the cost of maintaining the equipment. But, for those ladies who love to spin, the club offers an unlimited spin class membership. All new customers receive a complimentary onehour orientation with a Lady of America personal trainer. During this personal health diagnostic, the trainer will weigh the client, measure body fat, and recommend a workout regiment. The trainer will also teach the client how to use the machines and suggest fitness classes to help achieve her fitness goals. Lady of America offers 35 one-hour classes each week. There is truly something for everyone, from Low Impact Aerobics to Power Taebo to Zumba and even Rumba. “We strive to offer a variety of classes to appeal to all ages and interests,” explains Diana, who notes that each class is geared toward all fitness levels. “Our highly experienced and enthusiastic instructors always demonstrate the beginner’s version and explain how to increase the workout. Each client determines her own level of intensity.” Women can also customize their workout using Lady of America’s specialized cardio and strength training equipment. “Unlike at other gyms, all of our equipment is sized specifically for women,” says Diana. “Our cardio machines, customdesigned circuit training equipment, fitness accessories and free weights will offer just what you need to tone and strengthen your body.” Personal trainers are available for clients looking for greater results or those who just need a little extra

health & wellneSS SmooTHSHaPeS® a new, painless & effective cellulite reduction procedure By erin oWoC arnP-C, DermaToloGy nurSe PraCTiTioner

I

sn’t it frustrating that no matter how hard you exercise or diet this “cottage cheese” look pops up first on the backs of thighs, shows up later on the buttocks and eventually even on the backs of your arm and calves? What ever the case, I have never met a patient that is not bothered by this.

WHAT IS CELLULITE? Cellulite is a common skin condition known for its dimpled appearance caused by enlarged fat cells trapped in an inflexible network of fibrous septae located in the subcutaneous layers of skin. It affects 85-98% of post-pubertal women. For years it was thought that cellulite occurred primarily due to obesity, excessive weight gain, lack of exercise and poor diet, but in actuality, this is not the case. The formation of cellulite is due to several genetic and physical factors that include hormones, vascular changes and connective tissue changes. Contrary to popular belief, cellulite is not caused by excess weight. It’s all in your genes, which explains why even skinny women can have it. Cellulite is caused by clumps of fat cells that push up against surrounding fibrous connective tissue. The inherent thinning of skin’s support structure makes fat cells more obvious. This is what gives you dimples and what appears to be clumps of fat under your skin.

HOW TO GET RID OF IT Some doctors treat cellulite with liposuction. However there are also doctors who warn that in addition to the risks and expense, liposuction may have only limited results. Liposuction is designed to remove deep fat, whereas cellulite is a shallow fat, which is directly under the skin. Based on six years of scientific development, SmoothShapes® utilizing Photomology® technology is designed to offer a new and innovative way to treat

cellulite, safely and effectively, while achieving longlasting results. The FDA approved SmoothShapes® treatment protocol consists of two painless treatments a week for 4 weeks. Many of our patients experience changes in their skin texture and firmness after as little as two treatments. Following the procedure, you can resume normal activity without pain or downtime and without any restrictions. Some things you may notice after treatment are: Skin may appear slightly pink, which resolves itself anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours after treatment; Skin may feel slightly warm, which resolves itself within 30 minutes after treatment. So although there is currently no permanent cure for cellulite, SmoothShapes® has been demonstrated to

reduce cellulite with lasting results. In addition, we have recently discovered that the M’LIS Body Contour Wrap works synergistically with SmoothShapes® to remove additional inches as well as to reduce cellulite. I highly recommend SmoothShapes® to my patients wanting a noninvasive, painless solution for cellulite. F

or more than 15 years, Davie’s DynaServ Nursery and Accessories has offered a large selection of trees and plants to fit every outdoor lifestyle and budget. Last month, DynaServ celebrated the grand opening of its garden center, giving homeowners and businesses one more reason to shop there. Joseph Sirotkin founded the company in 1995 as a small nursery, located at 990 South Flamingo Rd., just south of I-595. He attracted a loyal clientele by creating a family atmosphere grounded in an expectation of excellence. As the business grew, he expanded the nursery from 4.3 to 18 acres. John Reed, president of DynaServ Florida, credits much of its success to Sirotkin’s business philosophy. “He always said if you do the job right everything else will fall into place,” said Reed. “And it has.” DynaServ is well known for its wide variety of foliage, from conventional landscape material to exotic items. Derek Lewis, garden center manager, hand picks much of the foliage. “We look for high quality plants and trees at affordable prices,” said Lewis. The nursery sells trees and shrubs; annuals and perennials; vegetable plants and herbs; palms; shrubbery and hedge material; tropical plants and much more. Once the foliage is selected, customers can visit the new garden center to choose from a large selection of gift and decor items to add to the landscape. The center has fountains, statues and bridges, as well as ceramic and glazed contemporary and traditional pottery in many colors. It also has other garden related accessories like wind chimes,

fertilizer, mulch, pesticides, planters, ornaments and more. One of the many ways that DynaServ sets itself apart from its competitors is through its commitment to customer service. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and available to offer professional advice on anything they sell. Many customers bring in photos or specifications and the staff helps them solve their landscaping problems. After they leave the nursery, they can call or email with any questions or concerns. DynaServ also keeps them informed of any unusual infestations, like the white fly, and how to control them. “All of our customers experience the DynaServ difference, whether they are re-landscaping their home garden or just refreshing their suburban green space,” said Reed. “No job is too small or too large.” DynaServ’s staff understands its responsibility to give back to the community on a regular basis. During Earth Day, DynaServ donated 75 one-gallon oak tree plants and a truckload of soil to be distributed. It is currently helping to maintain Davie’s Shenandoah Park and Orange Park. The staff recently met with the Weston Garden Club to educate them on native plants and teach them about container gardening. “We are glad that we are in a position to give back to the community,” said Reed. “We all have a responsibility to help each other.” For more information, call 954472-4422 or send an email to gardencenter@dynaservfl.com. Dynaserve is located at 990 South Flamingo Rd., Davie.

improve your Game with Properly Fitted Clubs

Dean SKlar, PGa ProFeSSional

S

o many times I have noticed golfers of all levels of talent playing with the wrong golf clubs. Since all golfers come in all shapes and sizes, golf companies in the industry have developed comprehensive fitting systems. Custom club fitting was born in the ‘60’s when Karsten Solheim, founder of Ping Golf clubs, hepled PGA Tour Professionals improve their games by adjusting their equipment to their swings. The results were amazing. On several occasions, players went on to win soon after their visit with Karsten, validating the importance of properly fitted equipment. Regardless of your ability, properly fit clubs will help you hit the ball straighter, more consistent shots. By matching the proper club specifications to your swing, a PGA Professional who a certified custom club fitter can help you reduce or eliminate undesirable shot patterns, like hooks, and slices, allowing you to play closer to your full potential and making the game more enjoyable. Surprisingly, custom club fitting does not cost any more or take longer to build. Some manufacturers, such as Ping, after an order has been placed, actually have a streamlined production process that allows them to ship your clubs, built to your exact specifications, usually within 48 hours. Some manufacturers actually have PGA Professionals travel out to their facility to go through a tour of their factory, learn about all the aspects of the design and manufacture of the clubs. I had a full tour of the Ping factory where I observed the employees actually pouring the hot metal into the cast moldings for the irons, looking at computer images of the castings to see if they are porous of holes that would deem them defective and scrapped for production. A meeting with the Research & Developement team of club design, meeting with the owners of the company as well as going out to the range with the custom club fitting cart of clubs and learning all the aspects of becoming a Certified Custom Club Fitter. Typically the fitting process is quite simple. You meet with your local PGA Professional, and after a discussion of your game with him you go out to the Driving range and from there is where the actual fitting will take place. Everything from the measurement of your glove size to the your finger tip measurement to the ground is put into the fitting system. Next you will hit golf balls off a “lie board.” The fitter will place tape under the sole of a 5 or 6 iron and have you hit about 3 shots. This will allow the fitter to see the impact marks on the sole of your club that you just made to see the proper lie angle that your shaft needs to custom fitted for your swing. Then the fitter will search for ther the proper flex of shaft you will need by watching your shot patters after impact. Your glove size is them measured to determine the size grip you will be fitted to and last will be your finger tip measurement to the ground which calculated with your overall size will allow the fitter to fit you with the correct shaft length. You will be surprised what a difference it will make to your playing performance on the course when having a properly fitted set of clubs as to a stock set “off the shelf.” If you’d like to talk to Dean about your golf game, contact him at Dean.Sklar@ FloridaMoves.com or at Rose & Dean Sklar Real Estate Group, Coldwell Banker, 1760 Bell Tower Lane in Weston, 954-389-6197 or on Dean’s cell 954-298-3616 and visit him on-line at www.WestonFloridaUSA.com

legally SpeaKing The Housing Crisis and Divorce By evan H. Baron, Pa

T

he biggest investment a couple will make is usually their home. These days, more often than not, the amount owed on a home exceeds the actual value of the property. This is often referred to as the home being “upside down”. If there are no plans to sell the property it may not be of immediate concern, unless a couple does not wish to continue to contribute to a mortgage for a house which has no actual value. When a couple is going through a dissolution of marriage, the issue of the marital home often becomes the main focus of the parties. Due to the housing crisis and the substantial decrease in property values in Florida, the issue of the marital home and how it will be resolved has often times become a difficult task. Is the house going to be sold? Is there any equity in the home? Will the parties actually lose money by selling the home? If the home is sold, where will each of the parties live? This issue becomes even more difficult if there are minor children who are attending public school. Most parents would like to keep their children in the school they are already attending. A dissolution of marriage is difficult enough on children without the added stress of having to move away from their friends.

immigration Benefits for victims By elizaBeTH r. BlanDon

T

he journey to any immigration goal starts with a first step. Although victims know they need professional advice, they resist entering the law firm of an immigration attorney. Retelling their horrors seems like an impossible task.

As this article explains, immigration law allows temporary status, legal permanent residence (LPR), or expedited citizenship based on past harm. Whether this harm was suffered through abuse or persecution, an immigration professional can only help the foreigner if she is willing to help herself. Make the call. Tell the story. Allow the attorney to do the rest. At Blandon Law, we assist victims of violence, abuse and persecution by providing confidential one-on-one consultations. It is understood, accepted and assumed that a victim will have a difficult time reliving these events. For that reason, there are no additional fees because a victim needs to schedule several consultations. The Firm also recommends mental health professionals to assist victims with the consequences of the harm they suffered. Finally, the Firm works hand in hand with these professionals to develop the evidence that will be used to obtain the immigration benefit. Citizenship. A spouse or child who obtained LPR status because of battering or extreme cruelty can apply for citizenship after three years, not the usual five. This exception applies even if the “child” was 21 years old or older at the time s/he became a resident. Legal Permanent residence. Victims can obtain legal permanent residence through various laws. Under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), a spouse, parent or child who is subject to extreme cruelty or is battered may file a self-petition for LPR status. Abused spouses of Cubans – who obtain LPR through the Cuban Adjustment Act – need not live with their abusers if they are not yet divorced. They can also selfpetition if the abuse was the cause for the divorce. When a victim is being deported, she may also be eligible for residency by applying for cancellation of removal. The abuser must be a spouse or parent who is or was a citizen or LPR. The parent of a child who was victimized can also become a resident through cancellation.

Unfortunately, these days the parties going through a dissolution have limited options. It is often best to have one of the parents and the children continue to reside in the home. This can continue until the youngest child graduates from high school. This is an attractive option, especially if the house has no equity and a sale would not accomplish anything. Of course, this can only be a successful option if the party remaining in the home has the financial ability to afford the monthly expenses. I have had several clients successfully renegotiate their mortgage and modify their monthly payment to an affordable amount. The problem which often surfaces if one of the parties is going to remain, is the disposition of the existing mortgage. If both parties are obligated on the existing mortgage, then even after the parties are divorced, they will both remain obligated. This is true even if one party deeds over his/her interest in the house to the other spouse. The title may be transferred, but the financial responsibility will remain. This could present a problem to the spouse who is leaving in that it would remain a financial obligation on his credit and could prevent him/her from securing additional funding for the purchase of a new home. Often times, the spouse remaining in the home does not have the financial ability to refinance the loan in his/her name. The only option often becomes the sale of the home so that the mortgage can be paid off. Of course some couples are simply walking away from their home and allowing foreclosure proceedings to take place. Clearly, this result has long lasting effects on both parties. If you wish to discuss your situation with me, please contact my office at 954-3859160 and schedule a free consultation.

Likewise, an asylee who has lived in the United States for one year can apply for LPR status. Several requirements for residency do not apply to victims and asylees. These include the affidavit of support and the requirement that the foreigner must maintain lawful presence prior to becoming a resident. temporary status and work authorization. Even victims who are not related to U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents may be eligible for temporary status. A foreigner who is helping the law enforcement authorities with the prosecution of a crime including domestic violence is eligible for U status. Victims of human trafficking, where abuse is the daily occurrence, are eligible for T status. A foreigner can also obtain work authorization and temporary status if they fled their home country because the government was unable or unwilling to protect her. Asylum can be applied for directly with the Citizenship and Immigration Service. Otherwise, if a foreigner is in the process of being removed from the United States, asylum is also a defense to that deportation. In many cases, victims refuse to apply for asylum because the horror of a denial and deportation is greater than the fear of remaining illegal. Perhaps the authorities were counting on this fear when they imposed an arbitrary one-year deadline for asylum. The fact that a victim does not wish to (or cannot muster the courage to) provide information relating to the persecution suffered is not an excuse for failing to file within one year after arrival. mortgage lender myths They Want you to Believe By omar J. arCia, eSq., ForeCloSure DeFenSe anD BanKruPTCy ProTeCTion aTTorney

M

ost mortgage lenders and servicing companies are taking advantage of the public’s sense of desperation and lack of information to strong-arm homeowners into signing one-sided loan modification agreements. Prior to signing any loan modification agreement or making any other significant decision affecting your home loan, it is critical that every homeowner be fully aware of the following “myths” that most mortgage lenders want you to believe. Myth No. 1: If I signed for a bad loan, I have to suffer the consequences of that decision. In reality, federal and state laws impose severe penalties on lenders that engaged in predatory lending practices. These penalties include cancellation of the entire loan and/or a refund of all payments made by the borrower, including any down payment. More importantly, these penalties and remedies related to the original loan transaction may even be available against the current mortgage company. Myth No. 2: Once a foreclosure is filed, the bank can immediately seize your bank accounts, garnish your wages and repossess any vehicles you own to satisfy your mortgage debt. Florida law prevents any lender from seizing any of your assets until after a final judgment of foreclosure, and only after authorization from the Court is obtained to satisfy a “deficiency judgment” (i.e., the difference between the amount owed to the bank and the amount for which the property sold at the foreclosure sale). Myth No. 3: If you are negotiating a loan modification with your lender, they cannot proceed with a foreclosure of your home. Actually, lenders can and will use the foreclosure process, especially during a loan modification application, as a means of coercing the homeowner to accept a onesided loan modification agreement that may even contain a provision where the homeowner gives up all defenses, claims or counter claims he/she may possess against the lender. Myth No. 4: Your lender is entitled to review all your financial information (assets, tax filings, pay stubs, etc.), even during a foreclosure. The law in Florida is crystal clear and it states that a party to a lawsuit may not obtain financial information from its opponent at any time prior to a final judgment. Despite this clear principle, most homeowners who are already in foreclosure willingly provide their financial information to their lender under the guise that this information will be considered by the lender as part of a loan modification application. By doing so, the homeowner provides its adversary (the bank) with all the information needed to identify and seize any of the homeowner’s assets if a foreclosure final judgment is obtained. Myth No. 5: The lender will take into account your best interests and act in good faith to offer you the best terms possible during a loan modification. In actuality, the lender’s only concern is their “bottom line.” If the deal does not make sense financially to them, they will force you to accept a one-sided loan modification agreement, or attempt to force you out of your home through a foreclosure process. We hope you are able to use the information in this article as a tool to assist you in any preliminary discussions with your lender about your home loan. However, this information is not meant to substitute proper legal advice. home décor The Decorating Process By SuSan reiCH

W

hen decorating your home, which takes precedence, aesthetics or functionality? The answer to that question is different for each person. A great deal depends upon your lifestyle and exactly how much you are willing to compromise. If you share a home with your family, these extremes can pose a problem. Learning to be realistic and practical about your design ideas will save a lot of arguments, headaches and stress; not to mention financial mistakes. Take the time to really think about your lifestyle. Are you the type of person/ family to fluff pillows? How critical is it that your sofa reclines? Are you willing to give up something else because of space or financial limitations? Inevitably, there’s a give and take within the decorating process. You must determine what you are willing to give up and what you are not. If you’re married and your husband wants “the comfy chair”, perhaps it can be located in a den, bedroom or playroom. If you are decorating a home with small children, you must think about safety and practicality. While there may be a style of décor you love, it might not be the best time to splurge on expensive furnishings. You don’t want your kids to destroy them, or worse, hurt themselves.Compromise is particularly important with young children. So, while your home may not be in the style you love at the moment, it can have pieces of the look you love. Incorporate a few items or one key piece to give you the feeling you want. Paint the walls in your color of choice and add some artwork. This will hold you over until they’re a little older and you can really decorate. When working with teens or tweens, the challenge can be a little harder. Listen to what they have to say. They have their own likes and dislikes. On one hand it’s your home and they have to understand that. On the other hand, it’s their room, their only space, and you have to understand the need for them to be comfortable. Compromise is the key. Everyone should enjoy the space in which they live. Remember to see things from other perspectives. Decorating one’s home should not be a cause for strife. Styles are available to satisfy everyone’s needs and desires. It may take time, you may need help, but a happy medium can be achieved with time and patience. Shutters offer elegance, Beauty & Durability By Faryal ali, BeauTiFul WinDoWS

S

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

hutters are the best investments for your windows. Why Shutters? In a word…value!

They look as fabulous now and in 10 years. Shutters offer excellent heat & privacy control & effortless operation. Shutters are furniture for the windows. It is $$ well spent. Adds to resale value of your home. Shutters have universal appeal. Whether your décor taste is contemporary or traditional, shutters fit right in.

Shutter Configurations: Selecting Shutters 101

1. Reputable

Dealer: Be wary of trunk slammers… here today…gone where tomorrow? We have been servicing South Florida for 12 years, with a new 4000sq foot showroom featuring the Best in Window Coverings. Come see all our shutter displays for great ideas. 2. Shutter Specialist: We’ll show you what to look for in a shutter. My advice is that it is better to handle the project one room at a time and invest in quality . 3. Installer: very, very important. You wouldn’t trust your good wood floors to an amateur; you should not trust your shutter installation to one, either. Beautiful Windows’ Shutter Specialist is professionally trained in shutter installation to measure and to install the final product for flawless operation. 4. Warranty: Should cover for warping, discoloration and cracking.

Shutter Options – Something for Everyone

1. Buy a shutter built to last. Simple as that. Don’t buy on price alone. Look for

dovetailing on corners, look for premium coating finish, look for integrity of the frame. Ask your dealer. 2. State-of-the-art finish - ensures easy cleaning and lasting beauty. Finetech coating for a micro-smooth satin finish protects the shutter from spills. 3. Palm Beach Shutter – great for bathrooms, high traffic like kids’ rooms and for coastal beach areas. 4. New Style offers the look of wood at an economical price point. 5. Heritance wood shutters are right at home amongst your best furniture. Nothing beats the richness of wood. Select from 2 ½, 3 ½ or 4 ½” louvers. 6. Front tilt bar gives a traditional look. Rear tilt is more contemporary. 7. By-pass or Bi-fold for sliding doors. 8. “Green Guard Certified” Shutter that gives you the comfort of knowing there are no emissions or VOC’s. Price and Quality correlate. 9. Yachts: We even do shutters for yachts, proof that shutters are great anywhere. 10. Dress up and soften the look with side panels as in the photo. dining out mario The Baker opens in Weston

By STaCey BomSer

F

or generations Mario The Baker has been a North Miami landmark. This popular eatery has been serving New York-style pizza and homecooked Italian favorites for over 40 years. Now, with the opening of the new Mario The Baker in Weston a second, and in some cases third, generation is getting a chance to experience the magic of Mario’s. The original Mario The Baker opened in 1969 as a family owned and operated pizza and pasta restaurant. The family still owns three of the ten Mario’s restaurants. The rest are franchises, including the new Weston restaurant. It is the third for manager Carl Jones, whose other locations are in Mid Town Miami and Bay Harbour Islands. Jones says he jumped at the chance to open the Weston restaurant. “This is a great location and the perfect community.” He notes that the Mario The Baker name and reputation are already bringing in customers who remember the restaurant from growing up in South Florida. Although times have changed, the restaurant’s menu and family recipes have not. “All of our food is made fresh at our main store in North Miami, this includes our sauces, chicken, meatballs, eggplant, veal, all of it,” says Jones. “Nothing is ever frozen.” While all of the sauces and food are prepared in North Miami, each restaurant makes its own dough each day using Mario’s secret recipe. “We have the best pizza outside of New York,” boasts Jones of the New Yorkstyle thin crust pie, available in both traditional and whole wheat. The pizza is available either by the slice or as whole pies in three sizes: 10” personal, 12” medium and 16” large. Customers can create their own pie by selecting from Mario’s more than 20 toppings or pick one of the 13 specialty pizzas. The Mario The Baker Special features pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onion, green peppers, tomato sauce and mozzarella. The Four Cheese Pizza is another popular choice. It features a blend of Grande’s finest cheeses – mozzarella, parmesan, ricotta and provolone. It’s a cheese lover’s delight, with

no tomato sauce. It’s hard to turn down The Godfather. This specialty pie features capicollo, salami, ham, provolone and mozzarella cooked to perfection and topped with lettuce and fresh tomato drizzled with olive oil and served with a side of Mario’s homemade balsamic Italian dressing. While Mario’s pizza may be the best you’ve tasted south of New York, the pastas and other Italian specialties come straight from Little Italy. “The Homemade Lasagna is a house specialty,” notes Jones. “The Chicken Parm Dinner is another customer favorite.” All of the entrees are served with two of Mario The Baker’s famous garlic rolls. These fresh-baked, garlic-slathered, pieces of art are the talk of the town on food blogs and dining sites. Here’s just a sampling of what fans are saying: “The garlic rolls – covered in butter and pieces of garlic – are amazing! Be sure to order at least two for yourself – they’re addictive!” from Yelp. “Born and raised five minutes from the center of the universe, I can testify that Mario The Baker’s has the ultimate food…garlic rolls. These garlic rolls should be on the list that includes the Holy Grail and the Ark of the Covenant. They should be guarded at Ft. Knox, or displayed to aliens as an example of what earthlings can do. I think they cure cancer. I would name kids after them. You can not over-exaggerate the beauty of this food!” from Citysearch. “Garlic Rolls? I have NOT found or are not duplicated anywhere else in my 56 years on planet earth. I take a bag home and freeze, not quite the same nuked BUT they’re Mario’s…YUM!” from Zagat. Mario The Baker is located at 1691 Bonaventure Boulevard, next to Walgreens. It is open for lunch and dinner daily. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 11am until 10pm, Friday and Saturday from 11am until 11pm, and Sunday from 12noon until 10pm. The restaurant offers dinein, take-away and delivery (within the Weston community for a nominal charge). Mario The Baker also offers a full catering menu. To place an order call 954-384-8505 or order online at www.mariothebakerpizza.com.

pet care

Why Should i Spay my Pet? By Dr. PeTer Birzon, Dvm

W

hy do we encourage you to spay your pet at a young age? Well, there’s the obvious reasons like she won’t bleed in your house every six months and she can’t get pregnant, but we really recommend the surgery to prevent medical problems at a later age. If you spay your pet before the first heat cycle, you basically eliminate any chances for mammary gland cancer which is one of the most common cancers in middle age to older female dogs and cats. Because we perform an ovariohysterectomy (spay), we also eliminate the possibility of uterine infections which can be devastating. Pyometra, or a pus-filled uterus can be fatal. By the time we see the patient at the hospital they are usually dehydrated, anorexic, in kidney failure or insufficiency, painful and have a fever. The toxins from the infected uterus are now affecting the major organ function and the patient is quite ill. This is a medical emergency which requires immediate hospitalization and surgery. It can be quite costly and mortality rates can reach 50 percent. This past month I saw four cases of pyometra. These patients were extremely debilitated and had to have prompt or emergency surgery. All four did quite well, including a 15 year old Pomeranian (Go Kaitlin!) but things could have ended quite differently for any of them. It’s not worth the risk if you’re not breeding you pet….it’s just not worth it! It’s a costly treatment and surgery and it can be completely avoided if you just get them fixed. What about neutering my pet? The same logic applies here. If you neuter the males at a young age you eliminate the potential for testicular disease (cause they don’t have them anymore!) but more importantly, it greatly reduces the risk for prostate disease and cancer which is not uncommon in middle age to older males. A lot of clients, (mostly the guys), want to know if this changes their personality. It does not…period. I have owned many a male Doberman and I always fix them at around six months. Believe me, they are still “all boy”. If they are middle age when they have the surgery, there can be a tendency to gain weight but this is easily managed by proper diet and exercise and they DO NOT have to get fat. It’s a myth. We tend to try and apply our logic to their health and it’s just not the same. They are better off with out these reproductive organs if they’re not going to breed. A few of the male clients have asked me over the years “how’d you like to be fixed?” I always respond the same way…I don’t eat from a bowl on the floor, mount every female I see, or hike my leg on a tree in the yard…well…not since college anyway but that’s a whole other story!! Just kidding!!!! Please call our hospital to arrange a pre-surgical consult with any of our doctors and we’ll be happy to explain in detail the entire procedure. Dr. Peter Birzon, DVM has been practicing veterinary medicine for over 20 years and has owned and operated four animal hospitals in South Florida. Indian Trace Animal Hospital is located in Weston at 1420 North Park Drive. You can reach him at Phone: 954-384-7147. On Sunday, June 27th from 12-4PM join Dr. Birzon and his staff at Indian Trace Animal Hospital for a Pet Hurricane Awareness Fair. a Heavy issue The Western lifestyle

By Dr. Barry SCHiFF

O

ver 70% of the US population is overweight and over 30% is considered obese. Obesity and sedentary lifestyle is now the number 2 preventable cause of cardiovascular disease, second only to smoking. Many believe that it will soon become the number 1 preventable cause of heart disease. Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in our nation.

In my last article, I emphasized that in order to find a lasting solution to being overweight, one must do a root cause analysis to determine what has gotten us overweight and what keeps us this way. I alluded to the fact that Asians who live in their native country do not typically gain weight as they age but when they adopt a Western lifestyle, they do. Thus, adopting a Western way of life, as opposed to genetics, plays an integral role. What is it about our lifestyle that leads us to gain weight and ultimately predispose us to become obese? First, we are sedentary. Technology, computers, cell phones, cars, boats, trains and planes etc., have helped facilitate us to become sedentary in addition to the economic demands driving us to be more efficient and productive both professionally and personally. Many of us work and are either in single adult households or have a significant other who also works. After a hard day at the office, many of us don’t have the time or the inclination to prepare a well balanced healthy meal, not that we truly know what that is. If there are any doubts about this, just gaze at the parking lots of the local fast food restaurants around mealtime. You will witness that many of us don’t expend an ounce of energy as we use the drive thru to get a meal and are tempted to “Super-Size It” for an additional 99 cents, ‘Filling Up’ with excess calories which unknowingly take many of us down a path of no-return. We adults set a poor example for our children who are spending more of their lives online, watching TV and playing video games as opposed to being physically active. Did you know that some kids take P.E. class online at school? There are a variety of things that trigger us to eat even when we are NOT hungry. Many of us eat to soothe ourselves or because we are bored. Stress and how we cope with stress often affect what we eat and how much we eat. On a personal note, when I was watching the Miami Dolphins play the Indianapolis Colts on Monday night football this past season, the Dolphins were ahead with approximately 2 minutes left in the game. Peyton Manning, the Colts quarterback then got the ball; a wave suddenly came over me. I felt extremely stressed that Manning would pull it off and win the game in the last minute as he so often has done in the past. I then proceeded to eat 2 bags of plantain chips, but to no avail, the Dolphins still lost! The 3rd and probably the most complicated piece to the puzzle is, certain foods are TRULY addicting. The things that we crave affect us like drugs. I contend that the manner in which we respond to and ingest certain foods substantiates that they are both physiologically and psychologically addicting. Because of our connection to certain foods and our desire to ingest them, we are NOT able to see the reality clearly. The foods that we think are our friends are not. My next article will focus on some of the specific components of our diet that are truly addictive and how they are so. It is only through the awareness and our acknowledgement of this paradigm within ourselves that will enable each of us to employ the tools that will ultimately empower us to gain control over food as opposed to food having control over us! Dr. Barry Schiff is currently the Medical Director of University Wellness and Weight Loss Centers, LLC located at 601 NW 179th Ave. in Pembroke Pines, FL. He is a board certified Cardiologist and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and has served as both the Chief of Medicine and Chief of the Medical Staff of Memorial Hospital Pembroke and as the President/CEO of University Heart Institute Cardiovascular Group, LLC. St. Thomas Aquinas spiker Cassandra Congemi has committed to playing volleyball at the University of Pittsburgh. Photos submitted.

C

assandra “Cassy” Congemi will be starting her senior year at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in August, but she already has her sights set on college. The varsity volleyball player has committed to play at the University of Pittsburgh. In the coming months, when her classmates are busy filling out college applications and anxiously awaiting acceptance, she will be busy perfecting her game. “I still need to keep my grades up and keep playing, but I have a verbal commitment for a preferred walk-on position on the team,” states the Weston resident. For Cassy this is a dream come true. “Ever since I was little I wanted to go to Pitt because that’s where my dad went,” she shares. Her father, John Congemi, was quarterback at the University of Pittsburgh from 19821986, following Dan Marino. He is extremely proud to have his daughter following in his footsteps. “It’s neat to go back in time 25 years and see your child go to the University of Pittsburgh,” shares Congemi. “It is a special place and I’m glad she has the opportunity to play there.” Technically, Cassy has been playing at the University of Pittsburgh for years. When she was little she used to attend the summer basketball camp, she switched to

10 June 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com

their volleyball camp after she picked up that sport. She’ll actually be up at Pitt later this summer for a special volleyball program. Ironically, Cassy took up volleyball on a whim. She grew up playing basketball. “One of my best friend’s mom was coaching a volleyball team and my friend begged me to try out with her. I did and I loved it!” That was back in sixth or seventh grade and she has never looked back. She says she liked it better than basketball and has been playing volleyball ever since. Now, Cassy plays pretty much year-round. She has been on the varsity volleyball team at St. Thomas ever since she was a sophomore; she played point guard on the varsity basketball team when she was a freshman. In addition, she plays for the Boomers 18Elite travel volleyball club. “I also play beach volleyball with a friend. We’ve entered a few tournaments. It’s so much harder! You think you’re in shape until you play at the beach,” she jokes. Athletics is not the only place where Cassy shines. She also excels in academics. The incoming senior boasts a 4.3 grade point average and is a member of the National Honor Society.
