Scientific Fact: When you introduce a low-calorie diet to your body, it goes into starvation survival mode, desperately holds onto the fuel-rich fat, and breaks down your leaner muscles. The Scientific Result: You become tired, more hungry, irritable, and finally you give up on the diet. You are not to blame— your body’s survival mechanism overpowers your will power.

“I lost 30 pounds It was so easy!” of fat .

Why Sci-Slim Works: Sci-Slim’s simple program causes your body to break down the fat—not the muscle—easily and comfortably providing your body with much needed fuel. Hunger is gone. The more fat you have—the quicker you lose that fat TM

Green Thumb Gardening Everything’s Blooming In The Garden Center By Jim Dezell, Flamingo Nursery

There’s no better time to visit your local garden center than early March, the beginning of Spring in South Florida. Deep blue skies contrast with healthy green foliage and a wide array of colorful flowers. With the cold fronts definitely behind us and the Summer heat still many months ahead, it’s also the most comfortable time of the year to work in the garden - and you’ll have ample time to enjoy the most colorful flowering plants - the Annuals! Here’s Eight Great Annuals that will provide nonstop bloom through June. They can be either planted directly into the ground or used in a container garden (try 5 - 7 different varieties of differing color, leaf texture and height). And for 99 cents a piece, you get a huge bang for your buck!

Petunias    Zinnia    Alyssum     Marigolds   Lobelia    Snapdragons    Pansies    Violas

Here’s all you need to know to be successful with them: ▸ SOIL - If planting into the ground, you should blend at least a 50/50 mix of Miracle Gro Garden Soil with your existing soil. For container gardens, use Fafard Potting Soil.

Special 2 Week Trial Course

16 March 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com

▸ FOOD - Osmocote time release granules should be applied immediately upon planting and 2 months later. ▸ SUN - These annuals thrive in full sun but will still flower nicely in partial shade. Avoid deep shade. ▸ WATERING - Daily for ten days to get the roots established and then 2-3 times per week thereafter, depending on heat and wind. ▸ PRUNING - It’s advantageous to lightly prune some annuals during their 3rd month to maintain fullness and promote continued flowering. Marigolds should be dead headed. I encourage you to visit with Jodi, Annual Buyer and Very Friendly Associate at Flamingo Road Nursery, to learn more about these flowers. The nursery also hosts weekend seminars at 10 am every Saturday and Sunday on a wide variety of topics to assist you in becoming the best gardener on your block! Now, Let’s Celebrate Spring in the Tropics!

Jim Dezell, owner of Flamingo Road Nursery, loves celebrating life in the tropics. Stop by and visit him and his expert staff at Flamingo Road Nursery, 1655 Flamingo Rd., one mile south of 595. Open 7 days a week, 8am-6pm. For more information, call 954476-7878 or visit www.flamingoroadnursery.com

school news Farm Bureau Grants Help Falcon Cove Garden Grow By Stacey Bomser

Falcon Cove Middle School has received almost $500 in government grants to support its Growing Smiles Garden project. The brainchild of Technology Educator Jaymi Feller, the Growing Smiles Garden is designed to give students hands-on experiences with biotechnology. Mrs. Feller piloted the program last semester with one class and one garden. The successful program is now being expanded to all of her eighth grade Exploring Technology classes. Students will plant four additional 24-square-foot vegetable gardens this semester. Presented with the theme of growing smiles through a healthy “salad garden,” students learn about companion planting, soil composition and Florida’s agricultural resources while planting different varieties of lettuce, tomatoes, carrots and other crops. “This project aligns with the 8th grade science curriculum on environmental issues and primarily focuses on sustainable and renewable agriculture and energy potential,” explains Mrs. Feller. “We also align with math and language arts benchmarks using the Florida Agriculture in the Classroom curriculum. Students practice graphing skills

to manually and electronically graph tables of Florida’s agricultural production over various years. Students also conduct research through the internet on vegetable companion planting, harvest methods, and uses in recipes.” In addition to reaping the educational benefits of this hands-on science project, first semester students also harvested enough lettuce to host a salad party that served 50 salads. Mrs. Feller is hoping the spring crop will produce an even greater bounty. “This semester we hope to take lessons learned and plant less varieties but yield larger harvests to sell to teachers for their dinner plates and to generate revenue for next year’s seeds and soil.”

Bureau; Cynthia Griffin, Resource Teacher for Agriscience, Broward County Public Schools; Mark Kaplan, Falcon Cove Principal; Jaymi Feller, Falcon Cove Technology Educator; and Fred Segal, President, Broward County Farm Bureau.

Her goal is to create a renewable, sustainable agricultural environment where future Falcon Cove students can enjoy learning about the environmental impacts of technology upon food resources. The Growing Smiles Garden is not the only unique way Mrs. Feller incorporates hands-on learning into her curriculum. The National Board Certified teacher uses a multidisciplinary project-based learning approach to engage students in realworld technology challenges covering the content material. Other lessons include building and testing toothpick bridges to learn engineering principles and forces of physics, designing and building a balsa wood glider to learn principles of flight and motion, and developing, writing and recording a digital radio show to learn about communication technologies. The Growing Smiles Garden project is funded by grants from the Florida Farm Bureau and Broward County Farm Bureau, along with support from Weston orthodontist Dr. Valencia and Flamingo Road Nursery. In addition, the program is being awarded approximately $300 from the Broward School’s Office of Prevention Program’s federal research grant “Building Character - Into the Curriculum and Beyond.”

school news University School Builds Character Through Cultural Unity By Stacey Bomser

Character development is as much a part of the Lower School curriculum at University School of Nova Southeastern University as reading, writing and arithmetic. Lessons on tolerance, compassion, honesty and integrity are woven into classroom lessons on a daily basis.

He organized the program with support from the parent volunteer organization. “The activities of Cultural Unity Week enable students to develop knowledge and skills to understand and discuss the concept of culture. Through the process of becoming ‘scientists’ who study culture, we enable the second benefit – greater acceptance and interest in diversity,” explains Dr. Womack. The first activity involved students becoming “cultural reporters.” Students were provided with a set of starter questions to use with their parents to learn more about their family culture and then shared their findings with classmates. Throughout the week, different parents were invited into the classrooms to talk about their culture. In addition, the school’s morning news TV show featured interviews of faculty members about their heritage by members of the Student Government. But, by far, the highlight of the week was the Cultural Unity Fair. “The aim of the Unity Fair is to show our students the great diversity and variety of the family cultures that make up our school,” says Dr. Womack. “Experiencing that we are a diverse group coupled with their experience that our school community is a warm and accepting place, students will come to experience firsthand the benefits of cultural diversity.” Students were invited to travel the world at the Cultural Unity Fair, exploring booths created by parents eager to share their family’s heritage. Twenty different

University School third graders Lucas Leveillee, of Cooper City, and Justin Taub, of Weston, explore Chinese culture during the Cultural Unity Fair.

One of the ways the school promotes character development is by teaching cultural awareness and acceptance. With almost every nationality and religion represented in the student body, the school’s popular Cultural Unity Week teaches students about different cultures as a way to foster character development. “Understanding differences among people results in acceptance, which supports all aspects of character development,” explains Dr. Nadine Barnes, Director of the Lower School.

Third grader Jason Rosenberg, of Weston, samples pastries and candies at the Colombia booth.

Second grader Melanie Stone, of Weston, watches intently as she gets a temporary henna tattoo at the India booth.

The program aims to not only teach children about other cultures, but to develop pride in their own heritage. “Through increased self esteem we see a greater tolerance for others,” states Dr. David Womack, the school’s guidance counselor.

countries were represented, from as close as Canada or Cuba to as far away as New Zealand, China and South Africa. Students were able to go from booth to booth learning about each country’s culture, foods, artifacts, language and more. Israel was one of the most popular booths. It featured a miniature “kotel,” the Western Wall, where students were encouraged to place their wish. First grader Peyton Ronkin, of Weston, hopes her wish will come true. “I put a wish on a post-it note on the Wall that I could go to Israel one day.” Third grader and soccer enthusiast Sydney Bonchick, also of Weston, liked Italy best. She enjoyed seeing all the different soccer balls and jerseys on display. Other students said their favorite part of the Cultural Unity Fair was sampling all the different ethnic foods. Fourth grader Dani Hahn, of Weston, enjoyed the pita bread and chocolate spread at the Israel booth. But in the end, students walked away with much more than just a full belly, they had gained a new appreciation of other traditions and ways of life. “I learned that everyone is different and we need to respect everyone’s different cultures,” shares Skylar Ronkin, a third grader from Weston.

school news Sagemont Alumni Take the World by Storm

By Stacey Bomser

As a college preparatory school, Sagemont does an exceptional job of preparing its students for higher education. But where the Weston private school really excels is in preparing its students for life. “Sagemont students are well prepared to make a difference in the world upon graduation,” states Dr. Brent Goldman, President of The Sagemont School. “Throughout our program, students are encouraged to find their passions and to participate in extra-curricular activities as well as community service.” Several Sagemont alumni have taken this to heart and are now making their mark on society. Elyssa Goodman, class of 2006, has always been interested in journalism. While at Sagemont, she was an intern for Our City Weston. She was on the school yearbook staff for five years, including three as Editor-in-Chief. “Elyssa’s leadership skills and initiative always stood out to me,” recalls Rachel Simmonds, Sagemont journalism teacher. “I have always known she would be successful.” Miss Florida USA and And she certainly is. Elyssa is also Style Editor for HerCampus. com, a national online college women’s magazine. While at Sagemont, Erica Briceno, class of 2007, spent three years interning for Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. This opened many doors for her and inspired her to get involved with student government at Southern Methodist University. While at SMU she has had the opportunity to meet world leaders including British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Former President George W. Bush. Erica is the recipient of the prestigious Hunt Leadership Scholar Award at SMU, which recognizes future leaders of the 21st Century. Perhaps the Economics, International Studies and French major may one day pursue a career in politics. Anastagia Pierre, class of 2007, is proof that you can have beauty and brains. When she was a freshman at Sagemont, she won the title of Miss Florida Teen USA 2004. Last year, she became the first African American to win the title of Miss Florida USA. And next month, Anastagia will compete in the Miss Bahamas pageant. If she wins, she will go on to compete in the Miss Universe and Miss World pageants. But, she is more than just a pretty face. Anastagia is committed to community service work, something she started while a student at Sagemont where she volunteered for Women in Distress and Relay For Life. Carlos Pena, class of 2008, was always a stand-out on the Sagemont stage. Now he’s starring in the new Nickelodeon series, Big Time Rush. His new role highlights both his comedic timing and singing abilities. Two skills Carlos honed while at Sagemont. Caring & Sharing Eagle Scout Deserves Standing Ovation By Stacey Bomser

Oren Zadik deserves a standing ovation. The Weston teen earned the prestigious Eagle Scout award by building a Black Box Theater at his school, the David Posnack Hebrew Day School. “Of all the things I tried my hand at these past four years, none has given me a home like the drama program has, both on-stage, back-stage, and in the house seats as a critic,” shares Oren. “I have been able to turn around and give back to a fledgling drama program and create a functional theater for my school, something we have never had or never dreamt of being able to get.” The drama department has had a profound impact on this young man. Oren says he had always been a quiet and shy boy, especially after the loss of his father and brother in a plane crash. Theater enabled him to break out of his shell. “I started off in the school musical my eighth grade year; they told me it would be fun. When I found that I like acting, I decided to participate in Thespians my freshman year,” says Oren. “To compound my own skills as an actor, I decided to join Cappies that same year to watch how other schools perform their shows.” Over the years, Oren continued to pursue his passion for theater arts. He has held many roles -- actor, mime, set designer and props designer. Last year he won the prestigious High School Cappie Award for Featured Actor in a Musical. In addition, his Mime troupe won the district thespian competition last year and went on to perform in front of over 7,000 people at the Thespian State Competition. This year, Oren is Lead Critic for his Cappie Team. Building the Black Box Theater was Oren’s way of giving back to the program that had given him so much. But this was no easy task. He faced many hurdles along

the way, such as ensuring the stage curtains would meet fire codes and making sure the modular stage was structurally sound yet functional. Despite the obstacles, like a true Eagle Scout, Oren soared once he started his project. “I was a small business all by myself. I was a liaison, a carpenter, a buyer and a fundraiser all rolled into one.” While Oren did the bulk of the work himself, he did enlist a corps of volunteers to help cut, assemble, paint and construct the Black Box Theater. In addition to the sense of accomplishment earned from completing this huge undertaking, Oren appreciates the possibilities it presents. “While my part in this project has finished, it is now in the

School News Five Cypress Bay Seniors Named Presidential Scholars Semi-Finalists By Stacey Bomser

It’s official – Broward’s best and brightest go to The Bay. Only six Broward County public school students were selected as semi-finalists for the prestigious Presidential Scholars Program, and five of them go to Cypress Bay High School. Paige Bartholomew, Giuliana Berry, Liana Braun, Michael Cho and Daniella Rondon have all been recognized as some of America’s most outstanding graduating high school seniors. That’s not surprising once you get to know these dynamic students. Daniella scored a perfect 1600 on her SAT. Paige scored a perfect 36 on the ACT. And Michael has been number one in his class for the past two years. He currently has a 5.3 GPA, on a four point scale, and will start college as a sophomore because of all the Advanced Placement classes he has taken. But there’s much more to these students than simply academic success. Guiliana is on the school cross country and track teams. Paige dances and performs musical theater. And Liana enjoys math competitions. “These students have all gone over and above the achievement level of all other students,” boasts Cypress Bay Principal Scott Neely. “This is the cream of the crop of the nation. These are the students that all the top colleges and universities want.” And they have applied to Ivy League and top tier universities from coast to coast. Daniella has her sights set on Stanford. Georgetown tops Guiliana’s list. Michael and Liana, who are both interested in engineering, are leaning toward M.I.T. And Paige wants to join her sister at their parents’ alma mater, Brigham Young University. Many of these students are weighing offers from multiple schools. They can

certainly afford to be selective. Their excellent academic records coupled with a potential Presidential Scholars Award rank them among the most desirable college candidates in the country. Principal Neely says these stellar students have done him and the school proud. “I can’t beam enough about you. It’s been an honor to be here and watch you develop. I wish you the best of luck.” The five Cypress Bay students will find out next month if they were named Presidential Scholars. Each year up to 141 students are selected. They represent excellence in education and the Photo Caption: Cypress Bay seniors Guiliana Berry promise of greatness in young (left), Daniella Rondon, Paige Bartholomew, Liana and Michael Cho have been selected as people. The Scholars are all invited Braun, Presidential Scholars semi-finalists. to Washington D.C. in June for National Recognition Week, which culminates in a White House-sponsored event at which the Scholars are awarded the Presidential Medallion.

community news Be Counted in Census 2010

The City of Weston is urging its residents to be counted in the 2010 Census on April 1st. In order to help you, they need your help. Your response is essential for you and for your community. The Census is a count of everyone residing in the United States. All U.S. residents must be counted – both citizens and noncitizens. The U.S. Constitution requires a national census once every 10 years. Households will receive the questionnaire in the mail or by hand delivery in March 2010 and are asked to complete and mail back the questionnaire upon receipt. Just Ten Minutes Every Ten Years Census Day is April 1, 2010. This means that census questionnaires should be mailed back on or before April 1, 2010. If you do not mail your census questionnaire back on or before April 1, a Census worker may visit your home to follow up. The questionnaire is simple and takes only 10 minutes to complete. It asks for name, gender, age, race, ethnicity, relationship, and whether you own or rent your home. It’s Safe to Complete the Census It’s illegal for the Census Bureau to share your personal information with any government agency – not even law enforcement, IRS, Welfare, FBI or immigration. Community Funding Depends on You The local community receives funding for education, public safety, housing and community development, transportation, health care, and human services programs based on Census results. Community organizations use results to determine location of factories, shopping centers, movie theaters, banks and offices – activities that lead to new jobs. The loss of funding for government services for just ONE uncounted person in Broward County was estimated at $1,300. Community News Weston Community Center Offers Programs for Mind and Body By Stacey Bomser

The Weston Community Center offers a variety of programs which appeal to all ages and interests. Each quarter the community services department publishes its list of recreational and educational programs and activities. Current children’s choices include Kindermusik, Kidokinetics, musical theater and art. Adult programs include Stroller Strides, fencing, needle arts, and Mahjong. Plus, there’s the 55+ Club for mature adults, 55 years and older. While the City is always looking for new and exciting programs to offer, the one class that remains consistent is Goju Karate. It was one of the inaugural programs offered at the Weston Community Center when it opened in 2001. “Among the responsibilities of a Parks and Recreation Department is providing opportunities for achievement and good health,” says Don Decker, Director of Parks & Recreation for the City of Weston. “We recognize that not every child will want to play soccer or baseball. Programs like Goju Karate at the Community Center open up other avenues for building a strong mind and body.” Sensei (teacher) David Schopp, a 5th degree Black Belt, has been teaching Goju Karate to children and adults in the Weston community for over fifteen years. “I started as a karate instructor at the old community center, in what is now the Midtown Athletic Club, and grew along with the city,” he explains. “When they built the Weston Community Center at the Regional Park, we moved over here and our program has been growing ever since.”

There are now about 60 students enrolled in the Weston Community Center’s karate program. Classes are held Monday and Wednesday evenings. There are separate sessions for children (ages 6-8), juniors (children 9 and over) and adults. Schopp teaches Goju Karate, which he has studied for 25 years. Goju Ryu is traditional Japanese karate system with a Chinese influence. He explains, “It balances both the hard (Go) and soft (Ju) martial arts disciplines. Students learn self-defense, kata (forms), fighting and weaponry.” The beauty of this program is that it is offered year-round, with open enrollment. Everyone advances at his/her own pace. Classes are by age, not level. “By having different belts in the same class, students learn by doing and by watching,” explains Schopp. “The system works. The upper and lower belts work together and learn from each other.” A complete listing of all programs offered at the Weston Community Center is available online at www.westonfl.org. Simply click on “Residents & Visitors,” then click “City Services” from the drop down box, then click “Parks & Recreation,” and finally click on “Recreation Classes and Programs.” Students must register in person at the Weston Community Center, 20200 Saddle Club Road in the Weston Regional Park. Community News Blessing of the Bikes Raises Awareness and Spirits By Stacey Bomser

The recent Blessing of the Bikes was proof that bicyclists share a bond the stretches far deeper than faith. Riders, representing all ages, religions and bike clubs, gathered at Saint Mark Catholic Church on Flamingo Road for South Florida’s first annual Blessing of the Bikes. The event raised awareness about bicycle safety issues and remembered the lives tragically lost in biking accidents.

Rev. Cesar Pena of Saint Mark Catholic Church sprinkles bicycles with holy water at the Blessing of the Bikes.

“The Blessing of the Bikes is a great way to raise awareness around the community. Bicycle riders have the same right to share the road as cars and they must be respected. The unfortunate accidents of the past year have been very regrettable and we want to honor the lives of these men,” said Juan F. Pineda, a member of the Weston Flyers cycling club, who helped organize this event along with fellow team member Antonio Arias.

more active role, not just ride, and together make the necessary changes to make our streets safer for both drivers and cyclists,” explains Antonio Arias. According to Arias, on any given Saturday or Sunday morning around 500 cyclists ride through Southwest Broward County and the City of Weston in particular. He says our community is desirable because of its wide bike lanes and smooth pavement. Cyclists from the Weston Flyers, Team Memorial, South Broward Wheelers, and the Alligators attended the Blessing of the Bikes event at Saint Mark Catholic Church. It was modeled after the event born in New York City eleven years ago. Each year, more than 500 cyclists gather at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine for that event.

Frank Tirado (left), from the International Christian Cycling Club, and Guillermo Vargas, from the Weston Flyers and Alligators cycling clubs, walk the “ghost bike” into the Blessing of the Bikes.

Following a short ceremony during which Rev. Cesar Pena sprinkled holy water on the bikes, the bikers observed a moment of silence to remember those cyclists in the community who lost their lives. The group placed a “ghost bike” near the intersection of Glades Parkway and State Road 84 in memory of Leon Hamer who was killed last March. Ghost bikes have been placed around the world as somber memorials to fallen cyclists. They also serve as silent statements in support of cyclists’ right to safe travel. “The idea with this type of event is to motivate the cycling community to take a

Community News Relay For Life Plans Birthday Bash By Stacey Bomser

Cake, candles and cancer? For someone diagnosed with cancer, every passing birthday is a major milestone. This year’s Relay For Life of Weston will celebrate cancer survivors with a gigantic Birthday Bash, April 24th through 25th at Cypress Bay High School. “We are celebrating a world with more birthdays – by saving and changing lives from cancer,” explains Dan Young, publicity chair for the Weston Relay. “This year’s Relay is going to be one big birthday celebration, where people can celebrate, remember and fight back!”

Celebrate.

Remember.

Fight Back.

Relay For Life of Weston April 24-25, 2010 Cypress Bay High School www.relayforlife.org/westonfl That is exactly what Relay For Life is all about. The American Cancer Society’s signature event encourages people from all walks of life to come together to celebrate cancer survivors and raise much-needed funds to fight this devastating disease. All money raised benefits the American Cancer Society’s programs of research, education, advocacy and service – programs that can reduce cancer deaths and cancer incidence and improve the quality of life for cancer survivors. Organizers are hoping to raise $140,000 from this year’s Weston Relay. But Relay For Life is much more than just a fundraiser, it’s a celebration (hence this year’s birthday theme) of those who are fighting or have beaten this disease. People like 9-year-old Chase Sundberg, a testicular cancer survivor. Diagnosed as an infant, Chase had surgery when he was only 18-months-old. Today, Chase is a happy, healthy third grader at Indian Trace Elementary School. Weston Relay Chair Ross Sabath is also a testicular cancer survivor. He’s been involved with Relay for the past five years. “I attended my first Weston Relay a couple of months after finishing chemo treatments and hearing the best words I’ve ever heard: ‘You are cancer free.’ I want all survivors to experience that amazing feeling that I felt when I walked around the track for the opening lap.” The Survivors’ Victory Lap is the celebratory start to the Relay For Life. It is followed by the Survivors’ Dinner, a special tribute to survivors and their caretakers. After dark, hundreds of luminaria candles are lit for the Ceremony of Hope. It’s a moving tribute to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer and to honor those who have won the fight. Other Relay highlights include prevention information, a live auction, great food, and fun family activities. U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz is one of the Honorary Co-Chairs. The breast cancer survivor is a huge early detection advocate and is dedicated to finding a cure. “The vital research and programs of the American Cancer Society are leading the way to eliminating cancer as a major health problem, and I am proud to support my hometown Relay For Life,” states the congresswoman. Members of the Weston community and local companies can show their support by recruiting a Relay For Life Team. Team members take turns walking around the track

You dream in pink and blue. You pick out baby names. Your night stand has a stack of books on pregnancy and parenthood by the experts. The only problem is you can’t get pregnant. If you are hoping to welcome a new addition to the family, but find yourself struggling to conceive, you are not alone. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 2.1 million married couples in this country experience infertility, the inability to get pregnant. Infertility specialists like Dr. Gelman offer hope, with the help of modern medicine. His Cooper City-based practice offers the most effective new procedures and technologies available in infertility. “We provide a full range of infertility services from simple drug therapies to assisted reproductive technologies such as Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF),” explains Dr. Gelman, Medical Director of Infertility and Reproductive Medicine of South Broward. Despite the high-tech nature of his field, Dr. Gelman prides himself on maintaining a personalized, boutique-style practice. He sees all patients and performs all procedures. “My staff and I understand that being involved in infertility treatment is stressful both physically and emotionally, that is why we strive to provide all of our patients with in-depth, personalized care.” Misconceptions are common in the world of infertility. One popular myth is that infertility is the woman’s problem. This could not be further from the truth. In fact, in about 40% of all infertility cases, the cause is attributed to a factor in the male. Fortunately, there is hope for men facing infertility. Dr. Kenneth Gelman and the staff at Infertility and Reproductive Medicine of South Broward offer a full-range of infertility services. Dr. Gelman begins by thoroughly examining all new patients, both female and male. “Infertility is not a female problem, it’s a couple’s problem. I evaluate and treat each partner equally.” After a thorough examination which includes a hormonal evaluation, ultrasound examination and semen analysis, Dr. Gelman will make his recommendations. Over the years, Dr. Gelman has succeeded in helping hundreds of South Florida

School News Art Students Use Powerful Images to Portray Black History By Stacey Bomser · photos by Annushka Almendros

Regardless of race, Black History Month is the time to reflect on the influences African Americans have made on our nation’s history. From civil rights leaders and surgeons to athletes and entertainers, their contributions have been profound. Weston art students paid tribute to these outstanding Americans in an exhibition of original artwork depicting how Black History has influenced their lives.

In celebration of Black History Month Special Events of Weston presented a student art exhibit at the Weston Branch Library recently. Students from Cypress Bay High School, Falcon Cove Middle School, Sagemont Upper School and Weston Christian Academy participated.

“Black history is American history,” explains Joyce Rhone of Special Event at Weston, which presented the student art exhibit at the Weston Branch Library in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Black History Month. “We should all celebrate and honor our greatest pioneers and play homage to our living legends and history makers like President Barack Obama, who have dedicated themselves to improving the lives of all Americans.” Much of the students’ work featured images of famous African Americans such as President Obama, civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., King of Pop Michael Jackson, baseball legend Jackie Robinson, and Olympian Dominique Dawes. Others pieces were more abstract, featuring peace signs, hearts and broken chains. One of the more powerful images featured two clasped hands, one black and one white, Display of artwork by students at Falcon Cove Middle School. with the word “Unity.” Genesis Brown, a junior from Cypress Bay High School, had a similar vision. Her artwork featured a drawing of a woman’s face, half African-American and half Caucasian, with the words “We Are One.” Cassie Freitag, a senior at Cypress Bay, drew a picture of an African-American runner breaking through a red ribbon finish line with the word “Freedom” on the back of his shirt. “The students used color, symbolism, words and illustrations to visually show how they view life today,” explains Cypress Bay art teacher Bizzy Jenkins. She encouraged her students to express themselves using a variety of media, from pencil

to acrylics to chalks to collage. “In projects such as these they are not only creating an aesthetically pleasing artwork, they are creating an artwork with a message and a specific purpose.” Rhone says about 60 pieces from Cypress Bay High School, Falcon Cove Middle School, Sagemont Upper School, and Weston Christian Academy art students were featured in the Black History Month Artwork by Cypress Bay High School exhibit. The students 12th grader, Vivi Tomadin. were invited to a special reception with Weston City Commissioner Mercedes Henriksson, Broward County School Board Member Phyllis Hope and Weston Branch Library Manager Eileen McNally. “The Weston Branch Library is privileged to support the art displays of our youth and to be a resource for our schools,” says Eileen McNally, manager of the Weston Branch Library. She adds that she was very impressed with the students’ work, as well as the art departments in the Weston schools.

Health & Wellness If It Ain’t Broke…Make Certain! By Dr. Browner & Dr. Behar

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” We are all familiar with this statement. Perhaps you have even used it a few times yourself! However, these can be dangerous words if referring to ones health. People who believe this about their health may be heading down a slippery slope to serious health problems. The “if it ain’t broke...” belief is founded on the notion that since pain usually means there is a problem, no pain must mean there’s no problem. Those that hold this view make decisions about their health based entirely on how they feel. Tragically, health care is littered with catastrophic examples demonstrating the naiveté of this belief. Heart disease and cancer are two extreme examples on a long list of conditions that can develop silently, with no symptoms. Back pain is one such condition. Remember the time you bent over and suddenly couldn’t move because of pain? That back problem didn’t just happen. Ninety percent of back and neck pain is a direct result of failure in management of spinal health. In other words, spinal pain is not the start of a problem, it is the end result. A spine can be dysfunctional (not working correctly) for months or years before any pain is felt, thanks to the body’s many compensating mechanisms. However, when the body runs out of ways to compensate, or the compensating mechanisms finally give up, the white flag goes up in the form of pain signals. Science is now telling us there is more to silent spinal dysfunction problems than even most health practitioners are aware. Spinal dysfunction is usually the result of postural distortion (imbalance), and abnormal spinal alignment and curvature. Those structural problems, together with the abnormal function they produce, have

been shown to cause premature deterioration of the spine, as well as adverse effects on the nervous system. Indeed, the long-term health consequences of structural and functional problems of the spine can be profound, yet often unnecessary. Do not let pain be your guide. Instead, be proactive with regards to your spinal health. Book a chiropractic spinal check-up today! An ounce of prevention… For a consultation or more information you can reach Dr. Browner & Dr. Behar at Windmill Health Center, Weston 954-2174881. We also have two additional locations to serve you in Pembroke Pines and Plantation, contact our Weston location for more information.

Health & Wellness Live Life to the Fullest! Find Out How to Regain Your Youthful Vitality By Dr. Jean Claude Nerette

You don’t have to live with the symptoms anymore! Are you tired all the time, do you lack sexual desire, depressed, can’t focus, experience hot flashes or gained weight? All of these symptoms listed can be caused by a hormonal imbalance, by simply replacing what hormones your body is deficient in can correct these symptoms. Unfortunately, in 1991 shock waves were sent through our society when the Women’s Health Care Initiative Study was halted prematurely due a slight increase in breast cancer and cardiovascular disease with women taking oral conjugated estrogen, estrogen derived from pregnant horse urine, such as Premarin. The conclusion reached by society was that all hormones caused the same problem. This simply is not true. Bio-identical hormones are not the same, they are identical to that which the body produces, and does not cause any of the problems that estrogen derived from horse urine may cause. In addition, there has been an abundant amount of research papers published in respected international journals documenting the beneficial effects of Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy since the 1930’s. Due to the fact that pharmaceutical companies are unable to manufacture and sell these naturally occurring hormones, Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy has been ignored because of the political agenda’s of pharmaceutical companies in the United States. Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy can be delivered in many ways via pills, patches, creams, injections and pellets. The most physiologic way of administration is via pellet therapy because the hormone levels are maintained constantly without the peaks and troughs seen with the other methods. Pellet therapy is delivered by placing the hormones directly under the skin allowing the body to access the hormones constantly whenever the body is in need. This convenient method allows delivery of hormones for 3-6 months, without having to remember to take a daily pills or possibly having skin irritation from creams and patches. Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy can help both men and women achieve the natural healthy balance of hormones their bodies need to maintain optimum well-being.

Some of the benefits of Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy include: Enhancement of libido and/ or increased sexual desire; Reduced fatigue & increased energy levels; Relief from anxiety and depression; Consistency in moods- reduction in feelings of anger, nervousness and irritability; Increased energy, focus, mental clarity and concentration; Improved memory; An increase in lean body mass and a decrease in body fat. In addition to these symptoms of overall well-being, Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy has been shown to decrease cholesterol, increase bone density and possibly offer increased protection against breast cancer and cardiovascular disease. Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy is initiated only after a complete medical history and specific laboratory testing to evaluate deficiencies in hormones such as the thyroid, estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone to name a few. Depending on the results of the laboratory testing, medical history and symptoms, the appropriate hormone and delivery method is chosen. After 2 weeks most clients are stating, “I feel wonderful” or “My husband thanks you for bringing me back to him.” You simply don’t have to live with the symptoms anymore! Dr. Jean Claude Nerette is certified in SottoPelle Bio-Identical Hormone Treatment. Dr. Nerette performs all treatments at his Medical Spa - Bellissimo Medical Spa & Salon. Bellissimo strikes the perfect balance between the clinical and the luxurious, providing an all-inclusive facility where you can receive salon services, as well as a visit with a Board Certified Physician for all your medical and health care needs. skin secrets Collagen Regeneration, the Absolute Secret to Younger Skin By Erin Owoc, Dermatology Nurse Practitioner – Ageless Skin Medical Spa

I have friends and family members ask me, really what have you seen in your 8 years of cosmetic aesthetic experience that will help my skin look like when I was in my 20’s. The answer is using products and procedures that help trigger the regeneration of your skins collagen. The faster you can get your skin to regenerate its collagen the younger your skin will look. There are 4 ways to speed up your skins collagen rebuilding process: 1. Physical Exfoliation. This is probably the most basic form of collagen regeneration. Receiving a physical exfoliation treatment such as microdermabrasion or using a hand held home exfoliation device such as the new Clarisonic Pro encourages healthy cell turnover. 2. Chemical Exfoliation. Salicylic, lactic, glycolic, and retinoic acid are just some of the acids that are used in chemical peels to exfoliate the skin. They can vary in strength to produce mild peeling or deeper peeling. These acids in milder percentages are also available in at-home products (via prescription medical grade cosmeceuticals) to cleanse and treat your skin on a daily basis. Chemical exfoliation can be a more aggressive, but effective way to regenerate your skin. 3. Physical & Chemical Exfoliation Combined. Recent advancements in technology have made it possible to both physically exfoliate and chemically exfoliate simultaneously with the procedure HydraDermabrasion. This innovative

treatment offers both processes in just 30 minutes. HydraDermabasion is so effective because after the outer layer of your skin is compromised, then the chemical peel is infused thus the acids can penetrate deeper. HydraDermabrasion is the most cost effective pain free way to accomplish both exfoliation methods and deliver incredible results. 4. FRAXEL. The most effective way I have seen to trigger the regeneration of collagen by using FRAXEL laser resurfacing. The FRAXEL laser delivers microscopic columns deep into your dermis to create tiny wounds. This process expedites your body’s remodeling of collagen and elastin, which results in tighter, fresher, more youthful-looking skin. The results are stunning. Many places claim to do FRAXEL resurfacing but they actually use an inferior laser or light device. Make sure that it is in fact FRAXEL to ensure you are getting the best possible treatment.

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month: Act Now to Prevent Colon Cancer Steven D. Wexner. MD - FACS, FRCS, FRCS(ed) – Cleveland Clinic Colorectal Surgeon

Preventing colon cancer may be easier than you think. Most cases of colon cancer can be prevented by having a screening colonoscopy. Colon cancer is one of few diseases where normal body tissue – in this case, polyps – actually turns deadly. Removing nonmalignant polyps during a colonoscopy procedure prevents colon cancer from developing. Colon cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in the US. It is also an equal opportunity destroyer, oblivious to gender, race or income. People at increased risk for colon cancer include those with one or more immediate relatives with the disease, an inherited tendency to form polyps, a long history of ulcerative colitis, or a history of breast or uterine cancer. However, they are in the minority. The disease occurs most often in those who least expect it. According to Steven Wexner, MD, chief academic officer and chair of Colorectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida, “Colonoscopy is considered the gold standard test for detecting and eliminating polyps. Other tests are simply less effective. ▸ Sigmoidoscopy: Only checks the lower portion of the colon. ▸ Hemoccult test: Detects blood in the stool, but is often inaccurate, giving false negative reports to as many as 50% of patients with colon cancer and false positive reports to many patients who do not have the disease. A positive barium enema requires a colonoscopy follow up. ▸ Virtual colonoscopy: Might be a substitute some day, but is now unaffordable. For this reason, it is now recommended by every major gastrointestinal society that both men and women have a screening colonoscopy at age 50. Anyone at increased risk should be screened by age 40 – earlier in some cases. The need for future screening tests is determined by the findings at the first screening as well as the patient’s risk factors. Some symptoms of colon cancer include blood in the stool and pain the lower abdomen. More than half of all people diagnosed with colon cancer have no symptoms at all, so it is simply not wise to wait for the appearance of symptoms. Do yourself a favor and schedule a colonoscopy today. It just might save your life. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Digestive Disease team is comprised of colorectal surgeons, gastroenterologists, general surgeons and other specialists. They work collaboratively, in order to provide the most accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment plans for conditions such as colon cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s and Colitis, liver and pancreatic cancers, as well as many others. This team effort allows for the best outcome in patient care. For a consultation, please call 1-800-639-DOCTOR, or visit our website at www.clevelandclinicflorida.org

A higher rate of survival and fewer complications in heart care. Why choose “much like Cleveland Clinic” when you can choose Cleveland Clinic?

Some area hospitals have advanced technology and robust research programs. And, much like Cleveland Clinic, some have even adopted a team approach to surgery. But we know it’s not just about having resources, it’s what you do with them. Independent studies* show that patients at Cleveland Clinic Florida have a higher rate of survival and a lower risk of complications in heart surgery than at other hospitals in the region. That’s the critical difference between “much like” Cleveland Clinic and Cleveland Clinic itself. It’s why we are the best choice for you and the people you love.

Every life deserves world class care.

Health & wellness The Signs and Symptoms of a Diseased Marriage By Alina Gastesi-de Armas, MA, MEd, LMHC

Last month I described the 4 C’s of a quality marriage as related to the properties associated with the grading of a diamond. This month my focus will define the signs and symptoms of a marriage in distress as related to the toxins of a terminal illness such as cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, the symptoms and signs of cancer are as follows: ▸ A symptom is an indication of disease, illness, injury, or that something is not right in the body. Symptoms are felt or noticed by a person, but may not easily be noticed by anyone else. ▸ A sign is also an indication that something is not right in the body. But signs are defined as things that can be seen by a doctor, nurse, or other health care professional. ▸ Cancer is a group of diseases that may cause almost any sign or symptom. ▸ Treatment is most successful when cancer is found as early as possible. Finding cancer early usually means it can be treated while it is still small and is less likely to have spread to other parts of the body. This often means a better chance for a cure. Be on guard to the following signs and symptoms that can cause disease in your marriage: 1. Conflicts in and of themselves do not cause damage to marriages. It is the inability to resolve them respectfully, to reach a compromise and/or to agree to disagree that slowly erodes at the intimacy and core strength of the love. The intensity and the frequency of the arguments also play a role in whether or not the conflicts are critical enough to warrant being toxic. Disagreements can be caused by any number of reasons including but not limited to; core values differences such as childrearing practices, money matters and extended family issues. Avoiding the

need to win will keep the marriage healthy while giving in to your need to win fosters competition—a surefire way to kill the unified team. 2. Criticism pollutes your marriage with judgment and alienation. Carefully framing your needs, desires, wants, dreams and emotions is an important piece in avoiding the trap of criticism. This communication gives rise to a greater sense of connection, leaving little room for censure. Furthermore, when your spouse's behavior upsets you, you can express your feelings. Meanwhile, you must look inward to find the real cause of your frustration. After all, it is your problem, not your partner's. You are the one that's upset. If your spouse was just expressing feelings about something or made an innocent mistake, not intending to upset you, the simple awareness of your displeasure may prompt changes if appropriate. Keeping in mind that unsolicited criticism can cause disconnection, alienation and the destruction of intimacy. Feedback on anything needs to be administered carefully and free of judgment. 3. According to Robert C. Solomon, Ph.D., the author of "The Passions: Emotions and the Meaning of Life" (1993), “Contempt is an intense feeling of disrespect and dislike. It is similar to hate, but implies feelings of superiority. A person who has contempt for another individual looks down (condescends) on that person. The recipient of contempt is deemed unworthy. Contempt may be related to feelings of disgust and bitterness.” The receiver of such disrespect, whether overt or covert, is left feeling ashamed, hurt and angry. Some overt signs of contempt include namecalling, hostile humor and ridicule. Covert signs of contempt are ignoring the other

LUMINEERS® Painlessly Create Smiles that Patients are Proud to Show Off By Anthony M. Crothers, D.C., Chiropractic Physician

No shots, no removal of sensitive tooth structure make a LUMINEERS smile makeover safe, easy, and desirable. People with crooked, misshapen, and dull teeth are often self-conscious and shy about their smiles. But revolutionary LUMINEERS veneers eliminate the insecurity by painlessly transforming less-than-perfect smiles into smiles that are straight, white, attractive, and natural-looking. Traditional veneers require painful shots and irreversible removal of sensitive tooth structure, permanently damaging teeth and sometimes causing sensitivity. Braces offer a less invasive procedure, but they can take years to correct a smile, and they don’t address chips or stains. Additionally, the results from braces aren’t guaranteed to last. LUMINEERS, however, are designed to correct chipped, gapped, stained, and crooked teeth, and the process requires just two visits to the dentist, is virtually non-invasive, and gives patients a painless experience. LUMINEERS in LUMITray, a revolutionary placement technology, makes completing LUMINEERS smile makeovers even faster and easier. “Almost all my LUMINEERS patients come in with something in common,” states Dr. Jorge E Mesa, a LUMINEERS dentist based in Weston. “They smile with their mouths closed. And they’ve struggled with this kind of insecurity for so long because they assumed that veneers would be painful. They are always so shocked and pleased that a LUMINEERS placement is so simple and comfortable. Just that alone inspires a broad smile!” LUMINEERS are the original painless, ultra-thin veneer. They are crafted using exclusive Cerinate® porcelain, a proprietary porcelain available only from LUMINEERS Smile Design Studio. LUMINEERS dentists create custom smiles that are clinically proven to last over 20 years. And all LUMINEERS come with a 5-year warranty.

fitness forum Exercise Myths and Flexibility Tips By Ellen Latham, MS

It gets very confusing for a lot of people in regard to exercise and not always getting the best advice. Hopefully I can help clear a few things up.

Top Four Exercise Myths

1. You will burn more fat if you exercise longer at a lower intensity. Wrong! You burn fat by creating a big total energy cost, that is why the Ultimate Workout at our studio was selected as the best weightloss exercise class in the country. The faster you walk, spin or run the more calories you burn per minute. You will need to work your way up in regard to intensity, so in the beginning you will need more rest periods in between your intervals of harder work. 2. Yoga is a completely gentle and safe exercise. Wrong! Yoga is a great form of exercise, but some styles are rigorous and demanding both physically and mentally. We made the decision at our studio to offer only yoga-stretch so we would not run into that problem. 3. Exercise will allow you to lose “all” the weight you desire. Wrong! As with all responses to exercise, weight gain or loss is impacted by many factors, including your diet and your genetics. All people will not lose the same amount of weight with the same exercise program, although exercise is the number ONE factor for successful weightloss. Just look at the BIGGEST LOSER. 4. If you want to lose weight, only do cardio. Wrong! You must do BOTH cardio and weightraining for the best results. Strength training, like what is done in our Ultimate Workout Class, will help maintain muslce mass and decrease body fat percentage.

Top Four Flexibility Tips

Our muscles function is to create tension and produce force so movement occurs.

62 March 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com

The intrinsic capacity of muscle is to go through a full range of motion...which is called flexibility. Here are some answers to questions I get in my studio about flexibility. 1. How many days a week should I be stretching? Each person differs but I suggest clients take a yoga-stretch type class and pilates, which emphasizes stretch and strength at least 2 - 3 times a week. Ideallly 5 - 6 times a week of this training would assure a more flexible body. 2. How long should you hold a stretch to improve flexibility? A 15-30 second hold will improve results. 3. What is the best flexibility method? There are several methods that work but I have found (PNF) Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation is superior to any other stretching. This is taught to our clients, so they can do this on their own. It has HUGE functional benefits. You put resistance in the muscle you want to stretch prior to stretching it. 4. What is that “STRETCH REFLEX” you talk about in your classes? When you stretch a muscle, there are muscle spindles that are along side that stretched muscle. It records the length of the stretch of that muscle and sends a message to your spinal cord which triggers the “STRETCH REFLEX”. This reflex actually opposes the stretch to protect the muscle from injury. That is why we hold a stretch for 15 - 30 seconds to allow this reflex to release. You can exercise every day, but if you do not have the correct information you are literally wasting your time. Ellen Latham, MS owner of Ellen’s Ultimate Workout and Pilates Studio, 5173 S. ONLINE shopping Sell Your Sporting Goods on eBay By Lisa & Bill Feldman

Many consumers successfully use eBay not only as a place to find great deals on new equipment, but also as a way to fund their next equipment purchase. Whether you are saving up for a new treadmill, need to repair your old bicycle, or are looking to upgrade your ski gear, selling on eBay is the perfect way to earn extra money. Swap out your unused pieces, those baseball bats in the garage or your extra fly fishing rods, and buy yourself new equipment. Thousands of people come to eBay in search of equipment, clothing, and accessories for their favorite sports, so no matter what sport equipment you own, from fencing to polo, buyers are looking for your stuff. A few other popular sports that you might want to consider are hockey, fishing, bowling, equestrian, skiing, snowboarding, lacrosse, racquetball, hunting, skateboarding, triathlon, surfing, scuba, paintball, inline skating, hunting, canoeing, kayaking and rafting. Items should be in excellent condition to bring the most cash, and you may even find a pair of shoes or some other athletic item, that still has the tags hidden in your garage.

Help Buyers Find Your Items with Keywords

Keywords are a great way to attract buyers to your listing, especially when used correctly in your listing title. Listing titles are used by eBay’s search engine to pull up listings during a search. Use your 55 characters wisely, and try to anticipate what buyers will be searching for. Be sure to include common search terms like “fishing”

One Area Of Lipo Free! Call for details 954-624-8882

and “golf,” when appropriate. State important characteristics of your item, what it is, brand, model number, color, materials, and condition. Of course, you should only include keywords that are relevant to the item you are selling. You can also search current and completed eBay listings to see what other sellers include in their titles. Create Accurate Descriptions In your listing description, make sure to include both basic information and details about your item. A good description is concise, well organized, and easy to read. Create bold section headlines, bulleted lists, and be sure to restate the information featured in your title plus more details such as sizes and dimensions, collection, benefits, related products estimated value, and any other interesting features. You can also insert photos or links to videos that highlight the unique attributes of your item. Think about your listing from the buyer’s perspective. The more information you provide, the more likely the buyer will be to place a bid on your item. Be sure to showcase your items with great photos. Choose the right background, cover all angles, and use proper lighting. A great picture will help sell your item just as a lousy one will deter bidders

It’s Their Business Great Vacations Start with Expedia CruiseShipCenters By Stacey Bomser

Chances are you, or someone you know, has taken a cruise vacation. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, more than 13 million people took a cruise last year, and 2.3 million of them were from Florida. That’s not surprising considering we live in the cruise capital of the world. With more ships and more embarkation ports than any other state, the choices can be quite overwhelming, but the pricing can be quite advantageous. “Whether you’re researching your first cruise vacation, or you’re an experienced cruiser, our team of professionally-trained cruise consultants will ensure you get the right cruise at the best possible price,” says Mary Beth Casey, owner of Expedia CruiseShipCenters, Fort Lauderdale. This new Weston-based travel agency concentrates on cruise vacations.

Its February opening was much anticipated, as this is the first U.S. franchise for Expedia CruiseShipCenters. While the franchise concept may be new, the business is well-established. A few years ago Expedia, the world’s leading online travel company, invested in Canadian-based CruiseShipCenters, one of North America’s leading cruise vacation specialists, in order to expand its presence in the cruise market. According to Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Expedia Inc., “Cruise is the fastest growing market segment in travel. We chose to partner with CruiseShipCenters because it is a pioneer and leader in the franchise cruise market.” This dynamic partnership is precisely why Casey jumped at the chance to open the first franchise. “Not only do we benefit from the Expedia name, the most recognized brand in travel, but also from the experience and reputation of CruiseShipCenters, a company that has specialized in cruises for over 20 years.” Clients will reap the benefits as well. As one of the largest cruise agencies, Expedia CruiseShipCenters provide special pricing on luxury and discount cruises around the world on all major cruise lines and cruise ships. “The company has developed strong preferred relationships with the world’s leading cruise lines,” explains Casey. “As a result, we get incredible savings that we pass on to our customers.” The perfect example is the company’s Top 100 Cruises which feature the most popular cruises, departure dates and itineraries. “Since Expedia CruiseShipCenters purchases large blocks of staterooms far in advance, these cruises often offer the lowest prices available and additional exclusive amenities such as onboard spending money and other bonus gifts,” explains Casey. “These cruises are in high demand but because of our industry relationships we can offer them to our customers at an exceptional value.” Pricing is not the only way, Expedia CruiseShipCenters provides clients with value. The company also offers unparalleled customer service. Backed by its industry-leading technology, professionally-trained cruise consultants have access to a searchable online database of more than 10,000 cruise vacations. “CruiseDesk is Expedia CruiseShipCenters’ proprietary booking technology, envied by everyone in this business,” says Casey. “It allows the cruise consultant to research all the options, pinpoint the best choices and prices, and forward this information directly to their client. Plus, after the booking is made, CruiseDesk allows the consultant to keep track of their customers, building long-term relationships.” And that is exactly what Casey and her team of cruise consultants hopes to do here in Weston. In addition to providing customers with the best pricing and most efficient booking process in the industry, Expedia CruiseShipCenters provides the added benefit of having an actual storefront. “Customers can come in and talk to a real person,” states Casey. “My team of professional cruise consultants is ready to explore all the options available to cruise passengers today.” With nine new ships coming into service in 2010, including the Norwegian Epic, Celebrity Eclipse and Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas all sailing out of South Florida’s home ports, as well as hundreds of ships sailing from ports worldwide, the choices are endless. Let the experts at Expedia CruiseShipCenters help you become one of the 14 million people expected to take a cruise vacation this year. Expedia CruiseShipCenters, Fort Lauderdale, is conveniently located in the Weston Lakes Plaza at 302 Indian Trace. It is open every day but Sunday. No appointment is necessary. The professionallytrained cruise ship consultants are always ready to help you plan a memorable cruise vacation. To learn more call (954) 349-1330 or visit www.cruiseshipcenters.com/fortlauderdale.

your money Funding Your IRA the Easy Way with an Automatic Savings Plan By Manny Bruno

Tax season is in full swing, and one of the easiest - and most beneficial - ways to reduce your tax burden is to fund an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). Anyone with wages under the age of 70 ½ can contribute and the annual contribution limits have been increasing. Benefits Add Up The amount you can accumulate depends on two factors – what you contribute and how much the funds grow within the account. Of course, the more contributions you make and the higher the earnings rate, the more you will accumulate. No one can control (or accurately predict) what will happen with interest rates or the stock market. But, you control how much and how often you contribute. Start Now and Make It Easy The contribution limit for 2009 and 2010 is $5000 for those under the age of 50 and $6000 for those 50 and above. There is no easier way to save than with an automatic savings plan. If you are already using direct deposit for your paycheck, have your financial institution transfer the amount each month.

Distributions – You must start taking distributions in the year you reach age 70½ and distributions are taxable. Penalties for early withdrawals – Withdrawals before age 59 ½ are subject to a penalty tax of 10% along with regular income taxes. Roth IRAs Roth IRAs have the same contribution limits, however contributions are not allowed for those with Adjusted Gross Income above certain levels. Contributions are not deductible, earnings are tax-deferred like a regular IRA and there are no distribution requirements. Early withdrawals are subject to the 10% penalty tax. Everyone’s tax situation is different and you may want to discuss your situation with a qualified tax advisor to learn how the rules may apply in your situation. We welcome the opportunity to discuss Automatic Savings Plans and IRA options with you at any of our Great Florida Bank’s Solution Centers in Weston: Weston Commons - 4507 Weston Road tel: 954-306-7630, Weston Country Isles - 1142 Weston Road, tel: 954-306-7600 and Weston Lakes - 316 Indian Trace Road, tel: 954-306-7610.

Basic Rules for Regular IRAs

Contribution limits for 2009 – Those under the age of 50 can contribute $5000 and those ages 50 and above can contribute $6000. The only requirement is that you have wages in excess of your contribution level. Deductibility of contributions for 2009 – Contributions are tax deductible if you are not eligible to participate in your employer’s qualified retirement plan or if your Adjusted Gross Income is below certain levels ($55,000 for single filers and $89,000 for those filing jointly in 2009). Tax benefits – The earnings on funds within an IRA are not subject to income tax when earned.

tax talk Should You Consider a Roth IRA Conversion?

By Todd R. Bomser, CPA

Finally we’re getting some good financial news. 2010 marks the first year in which taxpayers, at all levels of income, will have the ability to convert funds in Traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs. And, for the first time, this conversion is available to almost everyone, not just those making less than $100,000. But converting individual retirement accounts to Roth IRAs may not be for everyone. When evaluating your options you will need to keep in mind some of the risks, pitfalls and mistakes that could come with a conversion. While the conversion may not be for everyone, not doing anything might be a foolish move. It’s important to evaluate your options and the ramifications your choice will have on your tax plan. If your situation makes sense and you can pay the known tax today at a very low rate to get tax free income later why wouldn’t you do it? If your situation warrants, the question now becomes whether to convert it all at once or over a prescribed number of years. The second pitfall is converting when your tax bracket is likely to fall. It would be a mistake to convert your IRA if you are pretty sure your tax bracket will fall over the next few years. Before you do anything, make sure you understand the tax consequences of converting to a Roth IRA. One major mistake people make is neglecting to consult with their tax advisor and evaluating the long-term effects of converting. If you are not careful with your conversion the additional distribution from your traditional IRA could bump you into a higher tax bracket. Again, your tax advisor can prepare a projection of what your tax liability might be with a conversion.

70 March 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com

If you do decide to convert to a Roth IRA, make sure you do not have the taxes owed withheld from the transaction. If you withhold taxes, technically the payment can be considered a distribution rather than a conversion. This could then subject you to the 10% early withdrawal penalty. Another thing you want to beware of is converting to only one Roth, meaning lumping all of your conversion from the traditional IRA into a reclassified Roth. The IRS allows you to reclassify the traditional amount into as many Roth accounts as you want. One big advantage of owning multiple accounts is that you can always convert the Roth back into a traditional IRA if the value of the account falls below the original conversion amount. Finally, a big mistake people make is to convert an account and then forget it. Not watching the value or the investment mix is a mistake that could cost you money over the coming years. So, pay attention to your investment. If you have not already done so, now is the time to schedule a tax-planning session with your professional tax preparer. Remember, you should always consult with your personal accountant before making any changes to your tax strategy. Todd R. It’s Their Business Beautiful Skin Begins at Uni.K.Wax Center By Stacey Bomser

Uni.K.Wax Center has done it again. The company that introduced the waxing spa concept nearly twenty years ago, has just unveiled a private line of skin care products to complement its waxing services. “Uni.K.Wax Center is always striving to improve the client experience, both in the salon and, now, at home,” states Gabriel Castillo, who owns and operates the Weston Uni.K.Wax Center along with his wife, Romina Szperling. That’s not surprising, considering Uni.K.Wax Center is the industry leader. The company founder and CEO actually pioneered the wax hair removal revolution in the United States. Noemi Grupenmager, who just happens to be Castillo’s mother-in-law, is credited with creating the Brazilian Bikini wax. She grew the business from a single waxing salon in Miami Beach into a national brand, with franchises from coast to coast. “Regardless of which Uni.K.Wax Center you visit, you can be assured you are getting the best results with the best products at the best prices,” states Castillo. That’s because the company utilizes proprietary techniques and exclusive products of the utmost quality. It’s been over two years since he first opened his salon, and Castillo says Uni. K.Wax Center has won over the Weston community. “Our clients appreciate our commitment to customer service, courtesy, professionalism and cleanliness.” He notes that every wax esthetician is licensed and undergoes a rigorous training program at the Uni.K.Wax Center Academy in North Miami Beach. “Here they learn the correct technique along with impeccable wax room cleanliness, client comfort methodologies and appropriate methods for discarding wax and all waxing utensils after each use.” This strict regiment ensures Uni.K.Wax Centers continue to deliver the same premier products and professional service on which the company was founded. Unlike other waxing salons, Uni.K.Wax Center’s philosophy is personalized treatment for each customer. “Every client should have the experience of being the first customer of the day,” says Castillo. “That’s why we use a fresh, clean, unused pot of wax for each treatment.” This also insures there is no cross-contamination between clients. Technique is not the only thing that distinguishes Uni.K.Wax Center from other waxing salons. The wax itself is totally unique. In fact, that’s how the company got its name. The wax is made of all natural ingredients so it’s better for you and your skin. Feel the natural waxing experience. To insure quality control, each salon employs a specially-trained lab technician. They are responsible for maintaining the wax consistency and temperature throughout the day, and distributing fresh wax for each treatment. Clients are welcome to watch the

wax being prepared and portioned through the lab window. The same science that went into perfecting Uni.K.Wax Center’s exclusive wax, went into developing its new Body Collection. These spa-quality products feature the purest and freshest botanical ingredients. The product line includes Ultimate Balm, a body lotion made with green tea and cucumber, Citrus Body Polish & Glow, a body scrub made with citrus, avocado, sesame seeds, hazelnut and sugar granules, Hand & Foot Glow, a conditioning lotion made with green tea and cucumber, as well as a sun protection. For those who have yet to discover the Uni.K.Wax Center difference, Castillo offers new clients 15% off any treatment. All customers can save an additional 25 to 30% on every visit, simply ask about the company’s special pricing packages. Uni.K.Wax Center of Weston’s waxing prices are quite competitive. For women, an eyebrow wax is $16, a full bikini wax is $27, and a full leg wax is $45. For men, a back and shoulder wax is $50 and a chest and stomach wax service is $55.

Uni.K.Wax Center is conveniently located at 1114 Weston Road in the Country Isles Plaza next to CVS. The body and facial waxing spa is open Monday through Friday from 10am until 7pm, Saturday from 10am until 6pm, and Sunday from 11am until 5pm. Walk-ins are welcome or call (954) 888-4590 to schedule an appointment. For more information visit www.unikwax.com.

Lawn & Garden This Spring, Go Green! By Andrew Boshears

Although we South Floridians do not experience much of the seasonal changes; the traditional spring is now among us and people are going to start spending more time in their lawns. Unfortunately it is also the time when people are going to start using more toxic chemicals on their landscapes. However, we’re here to tell you now, that contrary to popular belief imposed upon us by millions of dollars of marketing from the chemical manufactures, it is NOT necessary to use these chemicals to enjoy a healthy, green, and weed free lawn. The key is not to focus on the problem that you can see. You must tackle to source of the problem, which in the majority of our cases, is a soil deficiency. If you have been using synthetic fertilizers or chemical pesticides, your lawn has been depleted of its nutrients and living organisms. Chemical fertilizers do not enrich the soil; they only feed the vegetation including the weeds. This is why you also have to buy specific herbicides with your fertilizer, most commonly known as “weed and feed.” By the time you finally get your lawn to meet your expectations of perfection, you have applied a cocktail of chemicals that has turned your landscape into the equivalent of addict that has become chemically dependent. Aside from the lack of efficiency from these products, chemically dependants lawns also contribute a great amount of contaminates to our water supply and environment. The can even directly affect our health in many adverse ways. Did you know that one in every 100 children born now in the United States is Autistic and childhood cancer is at an all time high? Scientific research has shown that there are strong links between these conditions and environmental exposures such as toxic lawn chemicals.

Hopefully you are now asking yourself, so what are landscapes owners supposed to do? Well the solution is actually much simpler than you may think. GO GREEN! Utilizing best management practices along with organic fertilizers and natural alternatives to pesticides can transition your lawn into a living, breathing, and self sustainable ecosystem. A healthy landscape with nutritional soil can naturally overcome and deter weeds, fungus, mold, disease, and herbivorous insects. A living landscape also requires less maintenance. Your grass can grow thicker instead of taller and will require less water because the soil will be able to retain usable sources and the roots will grow deeper to access it longer. Thankfully a new locally owned and operated company in South Florida called Green Acres Organics, LLC has been developed to meet the changing needs of the environmentally conscious landscape industry. Green Acres Organics, LLC offers a state-of-the-art, professionally applied, and completely natural organic fertilizing and soil enhancement service to residential and commercial customers. For more information about Green Acres Organics, LLC and/or a FREE lawn estimate, analysis, and consultation, please call our Southwest Broward County Franchise at 1-888-312-GREEN or visit our website at www.greenacresorganics. com or contact us greenacresorganics@gmail.com.For additional external educational information such as the material above, we encourage that you also visit www.safelawns.org and www.floridayards.org to learn more about how to make a difference.

positive parenting

Know How to Hover By Jodi Kurry Cohen, MS.Ed Director of Early Childhood Programs Temple Dor Dorim ECC

We’ve heard about them. We may claim to know some but no one seems to own up to being one…they walk among us, share our same circles, sit on the same baseball bleachers and visit the same Starbucks. What I’m talking about is the notorious “helicopter parent” aka “the hoverer.” This parent is known for being super uberly involved in every aspect of their child’s life. They may have given a jump start to their child while in utero, by playing Rosetta Stone CDs on mom’s belly or used flashcards to teach sight words at mealtimes in the high chair. This parent makes pre-arranged play dates but they are difficult to schedule around their child’s hectic after school activities of Mandarin, Suzuki and Modern Art. They are persistent in being part of every decision making process from picking their child’s class each year to telling a teacher what grade their child’s project deserved. Life experiences are examined with excruciating detail before being “considered”, as this parent carefully weighs the impact each will have on their child’s self-esteem. It’s ok to admit if you’re a helicopter parent. What’s wrong with wanting the best for your child? Guilty as charged! After all, aren’t we all entitled to some degree of “hovering”? The answer is definitely yes, but that’s contingent upon when and over what we choose to hover. Showing you want the best for your child by providing whatever support you can to ensure their success is great…Class placement, enrichment, extra tutoring and opportunities are all important aspects of being an “involved parent.” Being

truly involved however, means going beyond the surface fluff and “hovering over” the moments of parenting that aren’t so grand…remedial tutoring, eight sessions of speech, necessary therapy or helping your child accept defeat if they don’t make the team. Parenting is all about finding the right balance between teaching and learning and deciding what moments call for which one. It’s a juggling act of judgment calls and the uncertainty that comes with not knowing how or to what degree each decision we make will impact our children’s lives. As parents, we can help lighten this heavy load put on our shoulders if we periodically stop and make ourselves listen to what our gut is telling us is really most important for our individual child. It’s not easy or as painless to help mend your child’s heart as it is to pump it full of pride. It’s not as glorious or popular to help your child get “on track” as it is to have them on the accelerated track. Acknowledging and advocating that your child needs a different class is much harder than demanding they be in “THE” class…these are the times in your child’s life, when they really need you to hover. Jodi Cohen has a Masters degree in Elementary and Early Childhood Education as well as a Bachelor degree in Psychology. Jodi has led many workshops on parenting, behavior modification techniques, curriculum development, special needs training and crisis management. She has been the Director of Temple Dor Dorim’s Early Childhood Center in Weston for the past 11 years. For more information, please contact Ms. Cohen at the Early Childhood Center at 954-389-1232.

Haute Hair Love Your Next Haircut, by Helen Charles If you are unhappy with your hair it is time to take action! Salon visit preparation, with cuts that work at home and styling tips are what we want to share with you this month. Here are some regular questions asked by clients:

How to Know Which Product to Use

Q - I used to be able to leave my hair alone for a couple of days before washing. Why do I now have to wash it every day? A - Certain products on the market contain too many silicones which are used to make the hair feel soft, however too many can overload the hair, making it greasy or heavy. At different times of the month hormones can play havoc with our hair too. Overactive sebaceous glands can weight it down. This is why it is important to seek professional advice from someone who knows your hair history. For example, a product that deposits proteins into hair used for a long time may have to be exchanged for a body building shampoo. Merely changing your shampoo from one brand to another is not enough to achieve the right results, without knowing what your hair needs.

How to Use Hairspray

Use it to tame fly away hairs: Spray into a tooth brush and work it through your style. Use it on long hair: For a fine mist, spray into hair and walk into the spray for light hold. Use it for short hair: Spray onto a vent brush and run through the style still maintaining lots of movement. Always hold can at least 8 inches away from hair. Always spray too little rather than to much, you can always add more.

How to Use Clip-In Extensions

This is a wonderful tool to achieve instant volume, length and even color contrast. However, if not used in the correct way they can look unnatural and cause damage to natural hair. Remember these easy steps to create the correct result. ▸ Step 1: Section away a circle with a radius of 2” at the crown area. There will be no extensions in this area. ▸ Step 2: Section a horizontal line on the nape area and clip away the rest on top. ▸ Step 3: Tease the root on this line and spray a little hairspray. ▸ Step 4: Ensure the clips are open and place the extension on the teased area and close clip. ▸ Step 5: Allow a fine section of own hair to fall on top of this section. ▸ Step 6: On the sections above the ears, carry on with the sections to the side of the head leaving 1” from the hairline. ▸ Step 7: After sectioning in this manner until you reach the circle on top, unclip this part and let it cover the rest of the hair. ▸ This will give you added length as well as volume. If length is not needed only 2 horizontal sections would be sufficient.

Finally, Remember These Rules:

Do not overheat Do not do to your hair what you wouldn’t do to your skin! You would not scald your skin, so do not burn your hair. Control the temperature, use a heat protector and intensively condition your hair once a week to replenish moisture. Find your soulmate - find a stylist who understands ‘the real you’. A good stylist

will listen and work with you to tailor your cut and color to your lifestyle and budget. Be confident you can manage it at home. You have about an hour with a hair expert, so use this time wisely and ask them for insider secrets! Get them to explain what they are doing and the products they are suggesting to recreate the style at home. Some salons such as Helen Charles Salon offer styling lessons offering professional techniques which you can use at home. Time your appointment. There is no such thing as a quick trim! Make sure you allow enough time for your hair appointment. If you are looking to change your style drastically combine it with a relaxing head massage and a treatment before the cut. Called all kinds of names – hall bathroom, powder room guest bath, half bath, little’s girl’s or boy’s room, it’s probably the smallest room in your home. It’s not uncommon for these small room to have no window, and let’s face it, there’s not much beautiful about a toilet and vanity.

Today’s faux finish wallcoverings come complete with embedded jewels and crystals! Just think of the drama you can create. 3. Your flooring! legally speaking Criminal Convictions and their Possible Effect on Immigration Proceedings By Evan H. Baron, PA

Often times an individual charged with a criminal offense must make a decision as to how he/she will dispose of the charge(s). Most criminal cases are resolved by way of a plea agreement with the state attorney or the United States Attorney if in Federal Court. Individuals often accept plea offers because of a perceived benefit. This benefit can be avoiding incarceration or remaining conviction free. Often in the Sate of Florida first time offenders who are not charged with very serious crimes will be offered a plea involving perhaps a period of probation and a “withholding of adjudication of guilt”. This withholding of guilt results in the individual not having a conviction on his/her record. If that person were to be asked if he/she has ever been convicted of a crime, the answer would be no. If the individual successfully completes probation he/she could get his/her record sealed, if this is in fact a first offense. Unfortunately, non citizens or aliens do not always consider the long term effect of such a plea. This plea agreement which withheld adjudication of guilt and allowed the person to be conviction free could still have a negative effect on his/her immigration status. In entering a plea, a Judge must under Florida state law advise an individual that a plea entered in this cause could lead to possible deportation. If this warning is not given than a motion can be filed to attempt to set aside the plea so as to avoid any possible immigration consequences. The individual must allege that if such a warning was in fact given, he/she would not have entered a plea. The term conviction in respect to an alien has been defined in the United States Code as a formal judgment of guilt entered by a court or if an adjudication of guilt has been withheld, where: ▸ A judge or jury has found the alien guilty or the alien has entered a plea of guilty or nolo contendre (no contest) or has admitted sufficient facts to warrant a finding of guilt, and ▸ The judge has ordered some form of punishment, penalty, or restraint on the alien’s liberty to be imposed. First time drug offenders are now eligible to attend drug court in state court which would result in the charge being dismissed after the individual successfully completes a structured drug program. This does not require an admission of guilt or even a plea of no contest. There is a similar program in the Federal Court titled the Federal First Offender Act. The concern for aliens is not only possible deportation but how might the resolution of the criminal case effect their application for citizenship. I strongly encourage any alien who is charged with any criminal offense, no matter how minor it may seem, to consult with an Immigration attorney before resolving their case. If you need any further advice or information please feel free to contact my office at 954 385-09160 or check my website at www.evanbaron.com

Immigration Consequences of Controlled Substance Offenses By Elizabeth R. Blandon

The immigration consequences of controlled substance offenses can be various and violent: ineligibility to enter the U.S., ineligibility to become a legal permanent resident, inability to become a citizen, deportation and mandatory detention. Therefore, for each arrest, a foreign national will want to work closely with both an immigration attorney and a criminal defense attorney. A foreign national, even a legal permanent resident who has spent most of her life in the United States, is considered “applying for admission” when she arrives in the United States from abroad. Likewise a foreigner who lives in the U.S. and is applying for adjustment of status is also considered applying for admission. At the moment of admission, it does NOT matter whether the foreigner was CONVICTED of a controlled substance offense. If the foreigner admits she committed the acts, Immigration will deny residency and permission to enter the U.S. When Immigration is trying to deport a foreigner, a conviction is required. The immigration and criminal defense professionals will try to fashion the plea agreement so that the foreigner is not considered “convicted” under the immigration laws. If the foreigner was already sentenced and convicted, the criminal defense attorney may work on post-conviction relief, such as trying to vacate the sentence. A foreigner is not subject to deportation for possessing less than 30 grams of marijuana. However, this exception does not apply when a foreigner is “applying for admission.” This attorney has seen legal permanent residents travel abroad for a short trip to the Bahamas only to return and find themselves legally inadmissible. Although the foreigner is allowed to enter the country, legally she has not been admitted. At the Immigration Court proceedings, the judge will declare that the foreigner must leave the U.S. because of that conviction for a single act of marijuana possession under 30 grams. If the foreigner is deemed inadmissible or excludable, she will apply for a waiver so that the benefit can be attained. Different waivers are available depending on whether the foreigner is a non-immigrant (in the U.S. temporarily) or a legal permanent resident, as well as when the conviction occurred. This article is not legal advice. To learn how the immigration laws affect you directly, contact the Weston office of Elizabeth Blandon, Esq., at 954-385-0157. Health & Wellness Continued from Page 60 when talking, dismissiveness, and sarcastic facial expressions. What separates contempt from criticism is the intention to insult and psychologically abuse the receiver. This type of behavior and attitude breaks down the very fibers that hold a marriage together and therefore, if it appears, must be eradicated immediately. 4. Concealing important information-Sins of omission are outright lies which are felt by the spouse as betrayal. No matter how small or “white” the lie may be a loss of integrity and trust is the result. Covering up same sex friendships, for example, is a slippery slope towards infidelity. Not mentioning excessive spending or credit card debt can be devastating and possibly embarrassing when discovered. The prevention of this type of symptom is to keep lines of communication open no matter how touchy the subject matter. Like with cancer, having one symptom or sign may not give enough information to suggest a cause for marital disease concern. Ignoring subtle as well as obvious signs and symptoms as they appear may lead to a slow disintegration of the marriage over time. As with any illness early detection and appropriate intervention increases chances of survival. Finally choosing the right professional is a key component to accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of any disease.

Eagle Scout Article Continued from Page 28 hands of someone else. It is up to other people whether or not a show is ever produced, but every day I can’t help but notice what goes on in that room. I can see a dozen kids spending their spare moments making memories in my Black Box Theater; I peek through the window and see middle schoolers on stage trying to act like they have seen their high school role models do. I know young students are learning theater etiquette, developing a passion and a reverence for what can happen on stage.” Mrs. Matthews is extremely appreciative of this amazing gift she has been given. She says the Black Box Theater offers her students a space that encourages a real interest in theater. “This space has also taught me that it is wonderful to believe in your students and reminds me to let them fly with those ideas that others may find non-traditional.” Oren will officially receive his Eagle Scout award during a Court of Honor ceremony in May. Eagle Scout is the highest rank in scouting. Only about one percent of scouts who begin the program actually become an Eagle Scout. “This is the embodiment of what I have been working toward for as long as I can remember,” shares Oren, who has been a scout since kindergarten. “It is the symbol of everything I have always wanted to be. To be an Eagle Scout is to be among an elite group, men like Bill Gates or every American that has stepped on the moon.”

dining out Stir Fusion Specializes in Fresh and Flavorful Asian Cuisine

By Stacey Bomser

Stir Fusion is a restaurant that truly lives up to its name. It is known as much for its creative take on traditional stir fry, as it is for its fresh and flavorful Asian fusion cuisine. By definition, fusion cuisine blends the culinary traditions of two or more nations to create innovative and interesting dishes. Stir Fusion’s Executive Chef Tim Chaimoon has mastered this technique. His culinary creativity is evident throughout the carefully crafted menu. Chef Tim blends the exotic flavors of the Far East, including his native country of Thailand, with traditional American staples such as roast chicken, New York strip steak and fresh Florida snapper. The Lemon Basil Roasted Chicken features a crispy half chicken with green beans, onions, sliced almonds in a garlic soy sauce. The Grilled NY Strip Fusion Style features seasoned and sliced steak over sesame lo mein noodles with vegetables, sweet soy and kimchee sauce. The Crispy Fusion Snapper features lightly dusted and fried snapper with sautéed shrimp, fresh tomatoes, basil, pine nuts and sweet chili ginger sauce. The Sweet Chili Grilled Salmon is another fusion favorite. It features fresh salmon served with stir fried asparagus, peppers, scallions, snow peas, carrots and toasted cashews in Chef Tim’s special sweet chili sauce. His true talent shines with Stir Fusion’s Dinner Specials menu. Each item was created exclusively by Chef Tim to focus on the finest and freshest ingredients available. For this reason, it changes every few weeks, but diners can always count on one of his signature duck dishes or his beautifully prepared whole snapper specialties. A sampling of some of the delicacies on the current Dinner Specials menu include: the Queen of Duck featuring crispy roasted duck topped with red pepper, pineapple, bamboo shoots, tomato, basil, lime leaves, cashews and Thai red curry, and the Whole Fried Snapper served with broccoli, carrots, asparagus, zucchini and baby corn in volcano sauce or ginger sauce. The Three Best Friends is another popular dinner special. It features sautéed chicken, beef and shrimp with broccoli, carrots, asparagus, zucchini and baby corn in stir-fry sauce.

Of course, Stir Fusion offers a full menu of popular Thai, Japanese and Chinese dishes. Chef Tim prepares perennial favorites such as Pad Thai, Panang Curry, Kung Pao Chicken, and Beef and Broccoli. He has also introduced a few of his culinary creations such as Spicy Salt and Pepper Shrimp. It features shrimp dusted in rice

flour and flash fried with scallions, peppers, carrots, baby corn, fresh herbs and Thai chilies. Diners are also welcome to create their own classics with Stir Fusion’s popular Create-A-Stir Fry menu. “We are the only restaurant in town offering a stir fry bar,” states Michelle Greco, who owns Stir Fusion with her husband, Santo. “Diners can fill their pot with all of their favorite fresh vegetables and then watch one of our stir chefs prepare their meal right before their eyes.” She notes that Stir Fusion diners can also watch the sushi chefs at work on the restaurant’s big screen TVs. The restaurant offers a full sushi menu, including two signature Fusion Rolls. The Weston Roll features lobster, avocado, cucumber, crab, cream cheese, red and black tobiko in a tempura-styled roll, served inside out with sesame seeds. The Tornado Roll features crab salad mixed with spicy tuna, avocado and cucumber wrapped in soy paper and shredded potato and topped with Stir Fusion’s spicy Fusion sauce. Speaking of sauce, Chef Tim prepares all of Fusion’s sauces fresh each day, as well as the soups. “His focus is on fresh,” explains Greco. “He makes everything himself using family recipes and those he has mastered over his years of training.” Nothing is pre-made including his spring rolls, wontons and crab Rangoon. In addition, all food is cooked to order with no MSG. While Chef Tim focuses on serving fresh, flavorful food, the Grecos focus on family. Tuesday is Family Night at Stir Fusion with Bobby the Balloon Guy entertaining kids of all ages from 6 to 8pm. The restaurant’s kids menu has something to please even the pickiest eater. Choices include a Kids Create-A-Stir, teriyaki chicken, chicken-lo mein, and chicken fingers – both the American version and Japanese version, also known as chicken katsu. Stir Fusion has also introduced a Lunch Specials menu. For less than $10, diners can enjoy a half sushi roll, choice of entrée, miso or wonton soup and rice. The restaurant also offers sushi specials and special create-a-stir pricing for lunch. Stir Fusion is located at 2310 Weston Road in the Waterways Shoppes II. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner daily. Lunch is served from 11:30 to 3:00pm Monday through Friday. Dinner is served from 5:30 to 10:00pm Monday through Thursday and 5:30 to 11:00pm on Friday. Stir Fusion is open all day on weekends; 11:30 to 11:00pm on Saturday and 1:00 to 9:00pm on Sunday. To make a reservation or to place a take-out order call (954) 385-6366.

Pet Care

How Do We Know When It’s “Time”? By Dr. Peter Birzon, DVM

Such a difficult sensitive subject. None of us want to think about one of the hardest decisions we’ll ever make but the reality is….we owe it to them to never, under any circumstance, let them suffer. Unfortunately, there are times when we just can’t heal them or relieve their pain. I’ve personally had to make that decision several times for our own pets and as hard as it was, I’ve never regretted putting their needs first. I get asked all the time….How will we know when it’s time? The answer is actually clearer than we think. My feeling is when the “bad” days outweigh the “good” days and the quality of life has become existing rather than living, then it’s time. How will I know this? Remember, pets tolerate MUCH more pain and discomfort than we do. How many women can have an ovariohisterectomy (spay) and trot out of the hospital 6 – 8 hours later? Dogs and cats do it every day. Many pets are born with poor hip confirmation (dysplasia) and develop severe arthritic changes early on but continue to run and play. They are tougher than we are! So because they’re not screaming in pain does not mean they’re not living in serious and chronic discomfort. A lot of clients over the years have said they just wish that he/she would die at home so they won’t have to make that decision. Remember, if they’re not eating or barely eating, losing electrolytes from vomiting or diarrhea, not wanting to get up, then dying at home may involve dehydration, starvation, shock and a slower more agonizing passing. Euthanasia (I don’t like that word either) is done at our hospital in such a respectful, loving, caring way that their passing is gentle and very quick. For those of you that don’t know I will tell you exactly how it is done. An intravenous catheter is placed which takes only a few minutes. We encourage you and your family to stay with them BUT it’s absolutely fine if you choose not to if that’s just too painful. We give a rapid acting sedative/anesthetic followed by the actual euthanasia solution. It’s extremely quick and peaceful. You’ll have the privacy of a large room to stay for as long as you like with your loved ones. All arrangements for cremation, burial etc., will have already been taken care of so that when YOU are ready to go….. you go directly to your car. We make a paw print that will be sent to you within a few days. The pain….will stay with you for a long time. For me, I still get emotional when I think of some of my pets I’ve lost especially when I see others losing their “best friend”. Celebrate their memories and lives knowing that you were able to give them the final act of love….letting them go when it was time. Tax time Tax-aware investing for the 21st Century Provided by,, The Ure-Martinez Group UBS Financial Services Inc.

This article has been written and provided by UBS Financial Services Inc. for use by its Financial Advisors. Benjamin Franklin had it right when he said that "In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes." For investors, it pays to be mindful that it is not only fees that reduce investment returns, but taxes have an impact as well. Money managers typically focus on pre-tax investment returns, leaving it to investors and their financial advisors to deal with the tax consequences. As a result, interest in tax-managed investments has grown considerably; the number of taxmanaged mutual funds increased from 18 in 1995 to over 200 a decade later (source: Lipper Investor Services). While many strategies and techniques are available for individuals to minimize the impact of taxes on an investment portfolio, let's explore some of the more popular ones. Tax-indifferent investing. In this approach, the potential impact of taxes on a portfolio is not part of the investment decision making process. The approach is most suitable for tax-deferred accounts like an IRA or a 401(k) plan. Tax-aware investing. This approach, which seeks to generate the most efficient after-tax gains, can be passive or active. Passive tax management uses tax-exempt or tax-advantaged investment instruments such as municipal bonds, certain structured products, or securities that have low current income/yield. Money managers may also rely on a buy-and-hold strategy, which can potentially minimize transaction-triggered tax events. Active tax management is the practice of selective tax-loss harvesting on top of the tax-managed instruments and strategies described above. Client-centric financial planning. Here, the financial advisor assists his or her client in deciding asset “location as well as asset allocation. Asset location involves deciding what type of assets belong in taxable or tax-advantaged (e.g., IRA) accounts. As an example, a high-turnover equity strategy may be invested in an IRA while a municipal bond strategy is pursued in a taxable account.

Municipal bonds and municipal bond funds

Municipal bonds benefit from federal tax exemption. They also are exempt from state and local income tax for residents of the issuing state. However, both municipal bonds and municipal bond funds may be subject to the Federal Alternative Minimum Tax ("AMT"). If your client is or may be subject to the AMT, you should look for municipal bonds whose income is not taxable for AMT purposes or for a municipal bond fund that has a portfolio where a low percentage of bonds produce AMT income. For investors holding municipal bonds issued outside of their state of residence, those bonds may produce interest that is taxable at the state and local levels. Statespecific bond funds generally limit their investments to the bonds issued within a single state, which address investor concerns over subjecting such income to state and local taxation.

Tax-Managed Equity Funds

Tax-managed mutual funds consider taxes on capital gains and dividends as part of their investment strategy. They will pursue one or more strategies in an attempt to mitigate the effect of taxes, including deferring the realization of capital gains or engaging in loss harvesting to offset capital gains. A concentrated low-turnover strategy is also regarded as potentially having tax benefits.

Exchange-Traded Funds

Since their introduction in the 1990s, Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) have proven to be relatively tax-efficient due to the way ETFs are structured. For most investors, ETFs are bought and sold on the secondary market. Because ETFs can often raise

funds for redemptions in a manner that is not taxable to investors, they tend to incur fewer taxable transactions in the normal course of operations than a similar nonexchange-traded-fund might. Investors will, of course, be subject to taxes on the realized gain arising from the sale of the ETF. Fund selection, portfolio construction and tactical asset allocation are key components of a total approach to tax-aware investing.

Fund Selection

Research should explore the effectiveness of funds and ETFs both as tax-efficient investment vehicles as well as their long-term performance track records and risk characteristics.

Portfolio Construction

Municipal bond funds can be a good foundation for the fixed income portion of any tax-aware investment portfolio. Presently there are few ETFs in this space, so actively managed mutual funds may be the best vehicle for a diversified, tax-efficient fixed income portion of the portfolio. For equities, a core-satellite portfolio structure can help address the tax sensitivities. For example, ETFs as the U.S. large-cap allocation can constitute the tax-efficient core, supplemented by actively-managed funds in the small/mid-cap and international equity asset classes. For alternative investments, market-neutral or long-short strategies as well as a core investment in the commodity markets may complement other components of a tax-aware portfolio.

Conclusion

Investors may not need to consider the impact of taxes on every investment decision they make. Indeed, investors should make sure that the tax "tail' does not wag the investment "dog." Nevertheless, an informed philosophy regarding tax-aware investing can give investors a starting point for deciding which instruments and strategies they should consider with the help of their financial advisor when investing with a view toward tax efficiency.
