erhaps the most difficult job I’ve ever had has been my 24/7/365 role as a parent. It is both trying and triumphant, each day bringing different challenges and endless joy, sometimes simultaneously. As we celebrate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day it seems fitting that our cover story is about the remarkable work of Dr. Gelman and his staff at Infertility and Reproductive Medicine of South Broward. This issue is also packed with articles that celebrate the achievements of our local youth as well as stories about area businesses that are here to serve you. School News Indian Trace Elementary Fourth Grade Class Has a Taste for Knowledge By Stacey Bomser

S

tudents in Mrs. Koche’s fourth grade gifted class at Indian Trace Elementary School have a true taste for knowledge. And it tastes like pizza. The students recently enjoyed a delicious pizza lunch made from the tomatoes and herbs they harvested from their Pizza Garden. The project was made possible thanks to a generous donation from the Weston Home Depot. Store representatives were invited to attend the pizza party and sample a slice. The Pizza Garden project was Mrs. Koche’s idea. She wanted to show her students where their food actually comes from before it gets to the grocery store, and how much effort is needed to grow, for example, just one tomato. “The fourth grade science curriculum includes a study of plants,” explains Mrs. Marla Koche, the fourth grade gifted teacher at Indian Trace Elementary. “As we read each science lesson we could actually watch it happening in our garden. The students learned about germination and photosynthesis firsthand.” The students all loved the hands-on learning experience. “Every day they begged to work in the garden,” says Mrs. Koche, noting that her students have been responsible for tending the garden, watering the plants, weeding, and harvesting the produce. During this year-long science project, students learned that gardening and farming requires a lot of nurturing. Alanna Bieber explains, “You need to look at how dry the leaves are. If they are brown then you know you need to give the plants water.” Classmate Heather Ruggiero says careful observation is also important when it comes to picking the produce. “You need to wait until the tomatoes turn red or orange. They should be a little hard and firm when they are ripe.” She cautions that if you wait too long to pick the tomatoes and they get too soft then the animals will come eat them.

Jonny Berger was quick to point out that their Pizza Garden is organic; that means no pesticides and no fertilizers. “I learned that fertilizer just makes plants grow, not the fruits. If you leave it organic, the fruits will grow as fast at the plant.” Their plants certainly grew quickly. In just a few months, the tomato plants had grown so large that they needed to be staked. Now the plants are taller than some of the students. And they are producing about twenty tomatoes a week, which the students have proudly shared with Principal Ross and some of the other faculty. The students have also shared some of the clippings. Diego Soberon took home a branch from

Golf Tournament Supports Sound of Thunder By Stacey Bomser

Typically, the sound of thunder is bad news for golfers. But, on Wednesday, May 12th, it will be music to the ears of participants in the 5th Annual Cypress Bay Sound of Thunder Golf Tournament. The fundraising event is sponsored by the Cypress Bay Band Parent Association and will take place at the Weston Hills Country Club. The Cypress Bay Band, Sound of Thunder, has earned a reputation as one of the top music programs in South Florida. Both the marching and concert bands consistently maintain Superior Ratings (highest level) in all areas of performance. Last year the Sound of Thunder came in 5th out of 16 bands in the Regional “Bands of America” Competition in Orlando. In 2005, the wind ensemble performed before the Parliament in London. The Sound of Thunder is also one of the Broward County’s largest bands with almost 180 students. Supporting a band of this size and caliber is not easy. Fundraising efforts are needed to supplement the band’s limited budget. “The band uses this money to supplement school funding which has been very scarce in recent years,” explains Cypress Bay Band Director Michael Friedman. “Primarily, most of the fundraised money will be going towards the purchase of new uniforms that cost approximately $85,000. Our uniforms are 8 years old and desperately need replacing.”

The Cypress Bay Sound of Thunder Golf Tournament is the band’s major fundraiser for the year. According to Richard Klein, president of the Cypress Bay Band Parent Association, in past years money from this event has helped pay for instructional fees for special clinics, instrument repair, music, choreography, and transportation to competitions and games. Although the marching band season is over, the concert band is still hard at work preparing for its Spring Concert. It will be held on Friday, May 21st at 7pm in the Cypress Bay High School auditorium. The concert is open to the community. A donation of $5 per person or $10 per family is suggested. Members of the Weston community are encouraged to support the band by participating in the 5th Annual Cypress Bay Sound of Thunder Golf Tournament at Weston Hills. The shotgun start is scheduled for noon on Wednesday, May 12th. The cost is $175 per golfer or $650 per foursome. Sponsorship opportunities are available. To register as a player or make a tax deductible donation to the Sound of Thunder, send checks to: Cypress Bay Band Parents Association, 18600 Vista Park Drive, Weston, Florida, 33332. or students at The Sagemont School, it’s a compliment to be called “dramatic.” The school’s growing arts department has produced three shows this Spring, one in each division. Middle School students are busy rehearsing for their performance of J.M. Barrie’s “Peter Pan.” Three performances are scheduled for May 18, 19 and 20 at the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus. That professional venue was the site of the Upper School’s recent production of “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” by Rupert Holmes. The musical comedy is an adaptation of the last novel written by Charles Dickens before his death. He did not finish the work. The play is traditionally performed with multiple endings and the audience participates in picking the outcome. To prepare for their performance, members of the Sagemont High School Drama Club rehearsed a Chris Merlino (left) and Dean combination of endings and Malahais perform a scene from the performed several during Sagemont Upper School’s production of “The Mystery of Edwin Drood.” the course of the musical’s four-day run. “By having the audience be such a driving force in the outcome of the plot, we had to go back to one of the roots of acting which is improvisation,” explains 11th grader Chris Merlino. “This was a challenge because of the element of the unknown. We couldn’t rely just on the script.” Even Sagemont’s youngest students got a taste of the limelight this season. The

Lower School performed two sold-out shows of “Disney’s 101 Dalmatians, Kids.” Fifth grader Taylor Shear commanded the stage as Cruella de Vil, but it was the puppies that stole the show, as well as the creatively-costumed cast of Scotties, Chihuahuas, Boxers and Poodles that came to their rescue. Director Irene Perez, who is also a fourth teacher at the school, says she was very proud of the young actors’ commitment and talent. “I was amazed at how quickly the children learned their lines, the songs and the dances.”

Sagemont fifth grader Taylor Schear perfectly portrayed Cruella de Vil in the Lower School production of “Disney’s 101 Dalmatians, Kids.”

“I thought I would be so nervous, but when the curtain opened, I forget all about that!” shares fourth grader Sage Morris, who made her stage debut in this show. In addition to theater, Sagemont boasts a successful thespian program. The Sagemont Thespian Troupe returned from April’s annual State Thespian Competition with two Superior rankings and three Excellent rankings. The school was allowed to enter only five of its nine pieces that qualified at Districts. Tickets are now on sale for The Sagemont Middle School production of J. M. Barrie’s “Peter Pan.” Three performances are scheduled for May 18, 19, and 20 at 7:00pm at the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center. Community members can call the theater for ticket information.

disease),” she explains, noting that her grandmother suffers from this degenerative neurological condition. “He was in Chile so he could not come. But, he told them that one of his granddaughters was a very good singer. So they invited me.” It was shortly after this performance that Maria met music producer Roberto Morales. This was quite the coup for the talented teen, as Morales is also producer for Enrique Iglesias. After hearing her audition he gave her the news she had been hoping to hear her whole life: “She is good. It is going to be a long way, but she will make it.” Morales definitely knew what he was talking about. Maria just released her first CD entitled “Don’t Forget.” She wrote the title song herself. The song was inspired by her brother, Giancarlo. Maria explains that when her family moved from Chile to Weston in 2007, her brother stayed behind because he was going to university. “We were really close and it was hard to leave him.” The song was her way of telling him not to forget about her. She credits her close-knit family for helping her achieve her dream. In fact, she uses the nickname they gave her as her professional name. The CD is recorded under the name Ikna. Remember that name. You may soon be seeing more of it. Maria auditioned for the hit TV show, “America’s Got Talent.” She’s hoping she will get her shot at stardom this summer. In the meantime, she continues to work on her music career. The dedicated performer is now teaching herself to play guitar by watching YouTube. That’s an important skill for someone whose passion is country-pop music. Maria thinks her songs have kind of a Taylor Swift-style. When not practicing or recording, Maria is your typical teenager. She plays volleyball and basketball, but her favorite pastime is hanging out with her friends.

ver since she was little, Maria Noguera has loved to sing. She was belting out Celine Dion’s ballad “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic when she was just a toddler. But, her big break came two years ago, thanks to her grandfather. The Falcon Cove Middle School eighth grader says he was her inspiration. Rolando Massardo is a professional singer in her homeland of Chile. Maria says some her fondest childhood memories were of watching him on stage. “In 2008 he was asked to perform at an event the University of Miami was hosting for people with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s

Weston Christian Academy (W.C.A.) is hosting a “Back to the Basics” basketball camp for all boys and girls in first through eighth grade, not just W.C.A. students. The program will focus on fundamentals and friendly competitions. Camp Director Tim Farver, head basketball coach at Weston Christian Academy, says campers will play over 30 games of 3-on-3 during each one-week session. “We’ll play a lot of games and do a lot of drills as we work on the fundamental skills of the game,” he explains. During each session campers will learn offensive skills, ball-handling, rebounding techniques, fast-break drills, 3-point shooting, and defensive skills. “My goal is to give students the basic basketball skills they need to make their middle school or rec league team,” states Coach Farver, who has been coaching children’s basketball for over 20 years. This is the second year W.C.A. has hosted the summer basketball camp. “Last year, the camp was only one week long. It was so successful we decided to expand it this year,” explains the coach. There will be three camp sessions this summer. Session One, June 21-25, is for students in grades one through five. Session Two, July 12-16, is for students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Session Three, July 19-23, is for all students in grades one through eight. Coach Farver says students are encouraged to participate in both their age-specific camp session and the final session which is for all ages. “I’m excited about camp. I think we will have a great three weeks,” shares the coach. “We will have a lot of great people here to teach and take care of the kids.” In addition to plenty of personalized instruction, campers at the W.C.A.

Basketball Camp will receive a t-shirt, basketball, and camp certificate. The cost of the camp is $175 per session. Camp hours are from 9am to 3pm Monday through Thursday and from 9am until noon on Friday. Early care and after care are available for an additional cost. A $25 nonrefundable deposit is required to reserve your child’s place in camp. The balance of $150 is due on the first day of camp. Campers should bring a brown-bag lunch and water bottle each day. Edit Section Head Throw Out the Label By Jodi Kurry Cohen, MS. Ed

“Do you think your child is gifted?” Ask this question in a room full of parents and the likelihood is that the majority will respond with a resounding “yes!” The conversations that then ensue will sound like any of the following…“How could my child be anything but gifted…he starting reading so early!” “My daughter loves to write…her writing far surpasses her classmates…” “My son gets straight A’s. He’ll get bored if he’s not challenged”…”I know the only way my daughter will be challenged is if she’s placed in a gifted class.” These types of sentiments are shared by parents in conversations at the pool, gymnastics, at the baseball bleachers, in the salons and down school hallways. These words are spoken so frequently and with such assurance, that most of us would find it hard to believe that approximately only 3% of the population truly qualifies as “gifted.” If this is so, then how is it that at our children’s school there are two full classes of gifted third graders and how is it that the school down the street also happens to have two full classes of gifted third graders? Could it be that the statistic is wrong or do we happen to live in a community with an extremely high concentration of giftedness? While there is no disputing that there are a lot of bright children, the truth of the matter is it’s not possible for all of these children to be “gifted.” Identifying a gifted child is not as easy as one may think. Not every academically talented child that excels in the classroom qualifies as gifted. Equally so, not every gifted child is achieving to a high standard in the classroom. High test scores, academic ability and eagerness to learn are not the only factors to consider when determining if a child is gifted. Did you know Albert Einstein was four years old before he could speak and

Positive Parenting seven before he could read? Winston Churchill failed the sixth grade. I doubt any of us would argue either of these men’s intellectual capability. When determining if a child is truly gifted and not only bright, behavioral, learning and creative characteristics all need to be considered. Aside from standardized test scores, classroom performance and an IQ test, there are differences in the ways they conduct themselves. Bright children know the answers and answer the questions. A gifted child asks the questions and questions the answer. A bright child is often a high achiever. They work hard and do well on class tests. A gifted child plays around but still does well on the tests. The bright child is interested and listens well. The gifted child is curious and displays strong feelings and opinions about what they hear. Truly gifted children can be exhausting and time consuming. They are often obsessive about their hobbies. Many times they ask more than you can answer. Gifted children frequently have intense reactions to things. While other children are interested in the fairness of a kickball game, the gifted child wants to know about the meaning of life. While parents of gifted children may be blessed with their child’s extreme intelligence, many struggle with the difficulties of raising a gifted child. There is a higher incidence of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders among the gifted population. Often gifted children feel estranged from their peer group. At times they are misunderstood or teased due to their taste in music, food and hobbies that differ from children their own age. Gifted children are often disorganized, missing classroom assignments and may be asked by teachers to redo their work due to poor handwriting or spelling. The parents of gifted children often cringe at the state of the inside of their child’s backpack or the condition of their bed room.

Can Do Kid Special Needs First Grader Flips for Cheerleading comes off the floor with a sense of accomplishment and they are all grinning from ear to ear.” Olivia is so proud to be part of Frenzy that her mom says she often wears her Elite Cheer t-shirt under her school uniform. She has also been known to bust out into a cheer in class. Olivia is in a typical first grade classroom at Manatee Bay Elementary School. “When she gets an answer right, her teacher says she will get up and do a little cheer,” shares Katie. Certainly not shy, Olivia says her favorite thing about cheerleading is performing on the big stage. She also loves stunting. As the youngest member of Frenzy, Olivia is a flyer. This means she is the one tossed up in the air during stunts. The basket toss is her favorite stunt. “It is not scary. It is so much fun!” exclaims Olivia. What more could any parent ask for? Olivia and her teammates are having the time of their lives and are learning important life skills. Cheerleading teaches showmanship and sportsmanship. Frenzy is teaching these special needs kids how to work together as a competitive cheerleading team and support each other, both literally and figuratively. Katie shares a favorite quote that truly captures the spirit of Frenzy: “A good cheerleader is not measured by the height of her jumps but by the span of her spirit.”

Olivia Dowe is a member of Team Frenzy, a competitive cheerleading team for children with Down Syndrome and other special needs. Here she poses with some of her favorite team helpers, who are all cheerleaders at Miami Elite Allstars.

By Stacey Bomser

O

livia Dowe is your typical cheerleader – from her bright smile and bubbly personality to her hair pulled back in a high pony tail. But, there is something special about this spirited first grader. She, and nearly every member of her squad, has Down Syndrome. For the past two years, Olivia has been spending at least one day a week training with her competitive cheerleading team, called Frenzy, at Miami Elite Allstars in Davie. The squad is made up of 25 special needs cheerleaders and 15 helpers/junior coaches. What makes this program even more special is the fact that most of the helpers are cheerleaders from Elite’s other competitive teams who volunteer to assist the special needs athletes. Make no mistake, they are athletes. The Frenzy cheerleaders cheer, dance and stunt just like any other competitive cheerleading team. This includes, traveling to competitions. Earlier this year, Frenzy placed third at a national competition in Atlanta. They were recently invited to participate in the All Level Championships competition. “It’s amazing how polished the team looks,” states Olivia’s mother, Katie Dowe. “They are clean and together. They know their marks and they know what they’re doing.” That’s because each and ever team member is committed. They attend practice once a week, twice during competition season. Some of the cheerleaders, like Olivia, take private lessons to work on more advanced skills such as tumbling and cartwheels. But for as much as they put in, they get so much more out of the experience. Cheerleading gives these special needs athletes confidence and companionship. “I think it is important for Olivia to be with her peers. It is very important for the kids to have something that they belong to,” states Katie. “After each competition the team

“Imagine Charter School at Weston focuses on Character Education throughout the year integrating it into our daily curriculum and lessons,” explains Principal Jacquelyn Vernon. “We are proud to have three students receive honorable mentions at the national level.” An essay contest was held earlier this year at Imagine Charter School at Weston. Essays by the top three finishers in grades three, four and five were submitted to the 2010 National Character Essay Contest. Representing the school were fifth graders Sydney Grobman, Emma Sanchez and Rachel Geller; fourth graders Sebastian Suarez, Federico Bengoa and Sloane Silverman; and third graders Sebastian Nunez, Krista Fauni and Luciano Bettocchi. These nine students competed against over 600 other Imagine essay winners from all across the country. Eileen Bakke, Imagine Schools Co-founder and VP of Education, commended the students, “I am extremely proud of these young writers. Our essay winners demonstrate an admirable understanding of the importance of developing a virtuous character and are able to illustrate the difference good character makes in their lives, their families, their schools, and the broader world.” She notes that members of the judging panel were particularly impressed by the thoughtful, compelling compositions crafted by the students. They articulated their ideas about character values and applied them in relevant situations, demonstrating how living out positive character qualities makes the world a better place.

sk the Cypress Bay High School Action Team and they’ll tell you, there’s plenty of “dough” in doughnuts. During their recent “fun” raiser the team was able to raise funds for Food for the Poor by tempting the students’ sweet

tooth with doughnuts. The money raised will help rebuild Haiti.. “A special thank you goes out to the local Weston Dunkin’ Donuts and Publix stores. Due to their generosity, the Action Team was able to fundraise on a new level with great student participation,” said Cypress Bay Principal Scott Neeley. Kids also entered a drawing for Florida Marlins opening day tickets with a pre-game player meet and greet. Billy the Marlin capped off the successful week of fundraising with a visit to Cypress Bay to draw the names of the winners. The success of this fun-filled fundraiser would not have been possible without the support of Cypress Bay High School Principal Scott Neeley, Athletic Director Bill Caruso and the Varsity Baseball Coach Mike White. Robbie Steirn, First Team Captain for Action Team, commented, “I am grateful for the support of the Cypress Bay, Weston and Florida Marlins communities. We worked with Emily Naumovski, Food for the Poor Project Development, on a simple concept that can be easily duplicated by other Action Teams across the country.” As a result, the MLB featured Cypress Bay’s Action Team on their March conference call with Cypress Bay CoCaptains Robbie Steirn and Zach Fraley. “I feel a strong obligation, as the closest Action Team in the US to Haiti. We have a responsibility as Action Team leaders to teach other kids how they can make a difference in the lives of those in desperate need,” added Robbie.

ongratulations to Judi Robaina. The long-time Weston resident and active member of our community has been selected as one of the 100 Outstanding Women of Broward County. She will accept this prestigious honor at a dinner reception on Thursday, May 13th. The 2nd Annual 100 Outstanding Women of Broward County Dinner celebrates how far women have come in leadership roles in the business, community and philanthropic fields. Robaina is being recognized for her philanthropic work, particularly for the Weston Philharmonic Society and the Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention (FISP). Robaina is president of the Weston Philharmonic Society, and was a founding member of the organization 14 years ago. She is first vice president of ways and means for FISP, and has served on its board for more than six years. She has also been involved with the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, chairing the silent auction at last year’s Weston event, and has volunteered for Food for the Poor. “The reason I enjoy doing for others is that it makes me feel good and puts a smile on my face,” says Robaina. “Also, I have the capability to ‘make a difference’ as we all do.” Robaina and the other 2010 honorees were chosen by a nominating committee. According to event organizers, last year’s honorees were invited to nominate women they felt were deserving of this honor. More than 1,000 guests are expected to attend the 2nd Annual 100 Outstanding Women of Broward County Dinner. The recognition dinner will include an auction and fashion show featuring the exclusive Lilly Pulitzer line. All the benefits from this special event will support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County and the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center. The Boys & Girls Clubs serve more than 13,000 at-risk youth, ages 7-18, at 13 Broward County-area clubs. Its purpose is to inspire and enable children to realize their full potential as responsible caring citizens. The Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center is the only residential treatment program that houses mothers with their children while providing the intensive services needed to stop the cycle of family dysfunction and substance addiction. “To be ranked among the top 100 in this nationwide study of nearly 3,000 hospitals is an honor that reflects our dedication to delivering outstanding medical care in a patient- and family-centered environment,” said Frank Sacco, president and CEO of Memorial Healthcare System. “Awards such as this confirm that our commitment to providing healthcare with humanity leads to overall excellence – going beyond what is expected to what is exceptional.” “This year’s study magnified the value that 100 Top Hospital award winners provide to their communities. Even during the economic downturn, the 100 Top Hospitals maintained a profit from operations while raising the bar for clinical quality and patient satisfaction,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance improvement and 100 Top Hospitals programs at Thomson Reuters. “The insistence of these hospitals’ leaders - their boards, executive teams and medical staffs - on overall excellence makes the difference.” According to Thomson Reuters, if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated in these top 100 Top Hospitals award winners, then: ▸ More than 98,000 additional patients would survive each year. ▸ More than 197,000 patient complications would be avoided annually. ▸ Expenses would decline by an aggregate $5.5 billion a year. ▸ The average patient stay would decrease by nearly half a day. Memorial Hospital Miramar is a 178-bed, leading-edge facility situated on approximately 124 acres in southwestern Broward County. This four-story facility, which opened in March 2005 with Mediterranean architecture-style, offers private patient rooms and a comprehensive array of medical and surgical services. These services include allergy, cardiology, dermatology, emergency (adult and pediatric), endocrinology, gastroenterology, gynecology, infectious disease, nephrology, neurology, obstetrics, otolaryngology, oncology/hematology, oral surgery, orthopedics, pediatrics, perinatology, peripheral vascular surgery, plastic surgery, podiatry, pulmonary medicine, thoracic surgery and urology.

Health & Wellness Posture…Who Cares? By Dr. Browner & Dr. Behar

A

new patient recently came to our office complaining of chronic neck pain. As a chiropractic doctor, the first thing I noted was this patient’s obvious postural distortion. She disclosed she had just had a routine physical check up and told she was in “excellent health”. This little gem of information sadly revealed how misunderstood posture is by many in the business of health care. So why should we concern ourselves with posture? Your head is a little off center... who cares? All these sophisticated medical tests show you are the epitome of health, right? Wrong! If you have postural faults, however minor, your health will be less than optimum. The greater the postural distortion, the less optimum will be your health. It is that simple. cientific research has shown abnormal posture not only produces pain, but also causes: ▸ Deterioration of the discs and vertebrae of the spine, and of ligaments, muscles and soft tissues of the central nervous system (CNS) ▸ Some “organic” (internal system) disorders ▸ Abnormal motion, predisposing to muscle “pulls” and repetitive strain injuries… ▸ …and reduction in quality of life. Of these postural effects, the most important to overall health and well-being is the impact posture has on the central nervous system. Think for a moment: What does the CNS control? Science shows the CNS, which includes the brain and spinal cord, controls or regulates every component, every organ, and every tissue of the

50 May 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com

body. In fact, there is growing evidence the CNS directly impacts on the immune system, thus affecting the body’s ability to fend off disease. It is no wonder, then, a study published in the Journal of Pain Management states, “Posture affects and moderates all human functions, both consciously and unconsciously, from breathing to hormone production to thinking”. For these explicit reasons, when a patient enters our office, we do not treat them as a symptom: a stiff neck, a sore back. We believe, as chiropractic doctors, our obligation to every patient is to provide them the opportunity to truly improve their level of health. Since posture is so profoundly important to health and to our ability to enjoy life, what is the most logical thing to do? Get checked! For a consultation or more information you can reach Dr. Browner & Dr. Behar at Windmill Health Center, Weston 954-217-4881. We also have two additional locations to serve you in Pembroke Pines and Plantation, contact our Weston location for more information.

troke is the third leading cause of death following heart disease and cancer. Every year, more than 795,000 Americans suffer from a new or recurrent stroke episode – that means that a stroke occurs every 40 seconds. Americans will pay close to $70 billion in stroke-related medical costs in this year alone.

Q: What is a stroke? A: A stroke or “brain attack is damage to the brain when blood supply to part of the brain is reduced or completely stopped. Brain cells deprived of blood die and can no longer function because they stop getting oxygen and nutrients they need to function.

Q: What You Can Do To Prevent a Stroke? A: A healthier lifestyle plays a big part in decreasing the chance of disability and death from stroke: stop or don’t smoke; exercise regularly; control high blood pressure; maintain ideal body weight; limit alcohol intake; control cholesterol; improve eating habits; take medication as directed; control diabetes and regular check-ups.

Q: What stroke treatments are available at the Cleveland Clinic Stroke Center? A: Physical and neurological exams are performed immediately to determine brain damage and the cause of stroke. The physician may also have a CT Scan of the head to further investigate the type of stroke. If a blood clot is the cause of stroke, as it most often is, a clot busting medication called Tissue Plasminogen Activator (tPA) can be used for treatment, but must be administered within 4 ½ hours of the onset of symptoms. If you or someone with you has one or more of the above symptoms of stroke, don’t delay, call 9-1-1 immediately. Prempro/Premarin Vs. Bio‑Identical Hormone Therapy By Dr. Jean Claude Nerette

W

ould you be comfortable taking a drug that was prescribed to you for menopausal symptoms for only a five year period knowing that if taken longer, it would substantially increase your risk for cardiovascular and cerbrovascular disease not to mention breast cancer and blood clots? What would happen to your symptoms after 5 years when you stop the medication? What is being depleted in the body to cause such symptoms and are there safer alternatives? Numerous articles have been published about HRT (hormone replacement therapy) since the 1990’s when a large study called the Women’s Healthcare Initiative (WHI) was prematurely stopped due to the negative outcomes associated with the use of synthetic hormones Prempro (combination of oral conjugated estrogen and oral medroxyprogesterone acetate) and Premarin (oral conjugated estrogen). Unfortunately, after the study the press had grouped all hormones to be alike - synthetic and bio-identical hormones making the public at large believe all hormones were associated with the same negative outcomes studied in the WHI: Premarin and Prempro (synthetic hormones). This conclusion is simply not true. Let me explain…

Fundamental Principles Synthetic vs. Bio-Identical Hormones: Bio-Identical Hormones are usually derived from plant sources and their chemical structure is biologically identical to the hormones we have in our bodies. The incidence of having a reaction from these Bioidentical Hormones is extremely low or non-existent due to their identical chemical makeup that we have in our own bodies. However, this is unlike their synthetic counterparts the most common being Premarin & Prempro. Premarin (synthetic oral conjugated estrogen) which is routinely prescribed to combat the symptoms of menopause is derived from a pregnant horse’s urine. Premarin is associated with unfavorable side effects to include an increased incidence in breast cancer. Prempro is also derived from a pregnant horses’ urine and combined with progestin which is the most commonly prescribed form of combined HRT that has been shown to be unsafe over the medium term (5 years) in the WHI trial substantially increasing one’s risk of cardiovascular and cerbrovascular disease, breast and uterine cancer and blood clots. On the other hand bio-identical progesterone unlike progestin has been demonstrated in hundreds of medical journals to have positive natural influences on the body such as: synergy with Estradiol. Progesterone protects the uterine lining from overgrowth/ carcinogenesis caused by estrogen. Progesterone has favorable cardiovascular effects, anti-inflammatory, natural diuretic and bone protection. Bio-Identical Estradiol also has positive cardiac effects to include: vasodilatation, reduction of vascular proliferation and inflammatory response and decreased sympathetic activity which is imperative to maintaining a healthy heart considering cardiovascular disease is the number cause of death in women.

Delivery Method The preferred method of delivery for any type of medication is to maintain an even homeostatic level (constant level with no high peaks and lows) constantly with

Bio Identical Hormone Replacement Hormones do not decline because WE age. WE age because hormones decline. SAY NO! Let us explain how Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy will CHANGE the “QUALITY” of your LIFE, for the REST of your LIFE.

MEN, If You Suffer From: • Decreased Sex Drive • Erectile Dysfunction • Loss of Muscle Tone • Increased Belly Fat • Poor Concentration WOMEN, If You Suffer From: • Hot Flashes - PMS • Pre/Post Menopausal • Excess Body Fat • Mood Swings • Bad Skin Both men and women who suffer from hormone imbalance have many of the same symptoms and complaints. Anxiety • Irritability • Loss of Energy Depression • Osteoporosis

Replace Estrogen, Progesterone & Testosterone Pellet Treatment Needed Only Every Six Months • No Daily Creams, Injections, Pills or Patches

Benefit of sottopelle therapy vs. pills, patches and creams: Normal levels of each hormone are achieved in the blood utilizing very low dosages of each hormone. Sottopelle Therapy releases hormones directly into the blood stream, thereby bypassing the liver. Sottopelle Therapy is the only form of hormone therapy that can release more hormones when the body demands it. Sottopelle Therapy is made of pure crystallized, biologically identical estradiol and testosterone.

sottopelle therapy is hassele-free! stop suffering - start living - we can help!

Health & Wellness Continued from Page 55 the least amount of medication ingested by the body to receive the desired therapeutic effect. In the case of hormone replacement therapy the number one preferred replacement is bio-identical hormones due to the positive effects they create on the body and the superior method of delivery is pellet therapy. Bio-identical Hormone Pellet therapy is simply bio-identical hormones placed in the body underneath the skin allowing the body to consume the hormones as needed. The delivery of hormone therapy is constant and the hormones placed under the skin are 100% bioidentical and absorbed by the body. The pellet therapy works in conjunction with your own body and does not shut down the ability of your own body to produce hormones. The other benefits of pellet therapy are the amount of hormone dosage placed is specifically catered to the individuals’ size, symptoms and hormone levels – everyone does not receive the same dose. The amount of dosage with pellet therapy is designed to give the best therapeutic effect while using the least amount of bioidentical hormone replacement. On the other hand, Premrin and Prempro which have set dosaging and not tailored to the individual’s needs for replacement and are ingested orally. The synthetic hormone(s) must undergo extensive processing - first passing through the stomach and then metabolizing in the liver prior to having any desired effect. The concentration that is swallowed with the synthetic hormones is ten times the concentration necessary to obtain enough hormone for the targeted organ compounding the possibility of reactions and side effects.

Conclusion Although, the synthetic hormones Premarin and Prempro relieve menopausal symptoms, it is with what cost to one’s health? It is without doubt that after five years of being placed on these medications they should be stopped – due the clinical data published in the WHI trial. It simply does not make since to pacify symptoms for 5 years with such potentially life threatening side effects when there are safer alternatives available. Bio-Identical hormone pellet therapy is the preferred method to treat hormonal insufficiency because of the way it mimics your own body’s physiology. There is no limitation on the length of therapy and the positive improvement of menopausal symptoms, bone health, skin health, and cardiovascular effects to name just a few have been well documented. Bio-Identical Hormone Pellet Therapy offers you the option to improve your symptoms and quality of life without the harmful effects associated with synthetic hormones. Health & Wellness Lowering the Perfection Bar — Creating Authentic Women By Alina Gastesi-de Armas MA, MEd, LMHC

A

s I counsel women, I find that through the years, despite noted accomplishments both academic and occupational, there continues to be a great deal of societal pressure for eternal beauty, silent conformity and endless giving. Although women have come a long way towards balancing work and family, one of the ways they continue to measure their self worth is in terms of body image and ageless attractiveness. The fashion magazines erase via airbrush all imperfections off of their cover models while promoting the latest fashion often leaving women with a feeling of inadequacy for not being part of the newest trend. Women continue to search for what they are “missing”; struggling with low self esteem and the stress that comes with this pursuit of perfection, often resulting in affective disorders including anxiety and depression. Outer alterations do little to change women’s self concept and/or disappointment. In fact what psychotherapists have found is that plastic surgery provides the same type of instant gratification as a shopping spree or a vacation; once the newness wears off the emptiness or sadness creeps back in. In The American Journal of Psychiatry, dated July 2007, studies revealed that the suicide rate of women who received cosmetic breast implants is approximately twice the expected rate based on estimates of the general population. The outward appearance and expectations for a generic flawlessness denies the value and worth of authentic inner beauty. So, how do we lower the huge emotional costs associated with these standards for beauty, the need for accumulation of material goods and the want for external approval?

The only remedy for the false promise of happiness society promotes is authenticity, specifically in the form of a creativity, empathy, and generosity. Creativity and individuality are in direct contrast with society’s generic standards of superficial beauty: the Barbie-esque shape, the wrinkleless face, the impeccable home décor, and/or the brilliant children. The time, money and energy women too often spend on these goals rob them of valuable moments they could use to pursue fulfilling interests, self exploration and happiness. The freedom from this kind of stress often reveals a renewed sense of spontaneity and an inspiration to find happiness in more fulfilling ways. Authentic empathy starts with the woman herself. In her quest to be the ideal “nice girl,” she may deprive herself of the right to voice her opinions, needs and wants. Once she rids herself of the shame and guilt that comes from these unrealistic, often self imposed, expectations for perfection she is able to relax and feel more at ease with herself as well as connected to her family and friends. As she lets go of self criticism she is able to let love in and tolerate the flaws of others. By making peace with who she really is, she is able to reveal herself openly, patiently and lovingly. Generosity flows freely with authenticity. It comes as a result of giving wholeheartedly only what is comfortable. Requests for a woman’s time, and/or assistance come from all around her. My female patients all too frequently say that they have a tendency to give or offer assistance without self consideration. They then become overwhelmed, angry and resentful. Women tend to disregard their right to

May Is UV Awareness Month — Be Sun-wise With Your Eyes! The same sun rays that lead to skin cancer and premature aging of the skin are just as bad for your eyes, according to Dr.Jane Therrien. The culprit is Ultraviolet (UV) Rays and because May is National UV Awareness Month, Dr. Therrien encourages everyone to be “Sun-wise With Your Eyes”. “Unprotected exposure to UV radiation can cause photokeratitis, which is basically a sunburn of the eyes marked by painful, red eyes and a sensitivity to light,” Dr. Jane Therrien said. “The symptoms usually clear up quickly and cause no permanent damage to the eyes.” However, Dr. Jane Therrien added, growing evidence suggests that long-term exposure to UV rays can lead to macular degeneration and cataracts, serious eye conditions that can cause vision impairment or loss.” Dr. Jane Therrien suggests the following to protect the eyes from serious damage: ▸ If at all possible, limit your time in the sun. ▸ Wear a wide-brimmed hat ▸ Wear polarized sunglasses that filter 99% of UV rays “Don’t forget the children, “Dr. Jane Therrien said. “Children are especially susceptible to eye damage from the sun. The lenses in their eyes do not block as much UV radiation as in adults. Follow the same precautions as you would for an adult, but be sure to choose sunglasses that fit their smaller faces, have impact-resistant lenses, and have lenses large enough to shield the entire eye.” Dr. Jane Therrien owns and practices at Weston Family Eyecare located at 4472 Weston Road in Weston. Fitness Forum Knee Problems in Active People By Ellen Latham, MS

S

ometimes called Runners Knee, this painful and sometimes debilitating ailment of the knee occurs in one quarter of all active people. If you do an activity that bends the knee this can be an issue. The exact cause is still a mystery. In November 2009 The American Journal Of Sports Medicine followed 1,600 midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy for 2.5 years. Each underwent movement analysis during jumping, a lower body strength test and postural assessments. By the end of the study 24 women and 16 men had developed knee problems. The researchers identified several things that were associated with the condition. Weak hamstrings and quads were a big factor. Also, a smaller knee bend angle was a factor. Overall the people who developed knee issues did not bend their knees

when running or jumping then those who did not develop the problem. So the area between their kneecap and their thigh bone was smaller and much more pressure was applied. As an instructor I look for knees moving in front of big toe during the squat, collapsed arches while landing from a jump and barely a bend in the knee when they land from a jump. I know this person has a good chance of developing a knee problem in the future. haute hair Hottest Updos for 2010 Prom Season Helen Charles Salon London The wish list for the perfect “Updo” Launches New Website By Helen Charles

T

By Stacey Bomser

he new rules for updos are: Be adventurous, use hair bands and be sexy!

1. Wrap The Locks Around A Donut To Give Your Bun The Wow Factor

1

The emphasis on the placement of the bun is the key element of a modern updo. Whether placed on the crown or at the nape or even right on top of the head are the ideal spots for creating the glamorous looks for special occasions.

T

he Helen Charles Salon London has given its website a makeover. The award-winning salon has launched a new, client-focused website at www.helencharlessalon.com. “We wanted to communicate easily and effectively with our clients and give them the ability to provide us with their feedback and suggestions,” says Helen Charles, salon owner. “We are continually growing, learning, teaching and sharing the latest innovations in the hair and beauty industry. The new website was the natural next step for us.”

2 2. Pile The Curls On Top

If you have curly hair, scoop up and pin at the front for a statement look. This is an ideal look if you are running out of time and need to look hot quickly. For this style to be effective, your hair needs to be in optimum condition and the ends trimmed.

3

3. Braids Are In And Can Be Added To Any Area Of The Head

A simple hair piece similar to your hair color can be braided and added to your style to create a stylish updo. When braiding the hairpiece be sure to use a smoothing gel or serum to tame down the flyaway hairs.

4

4. Tease The Crown And Team Up Long Bangs With Stylish Curls.

Create a disheveled look at the length of your hair by curling the hair with a hot iron iron in different directions. Tease the crown and secure at the back of the head. The contrast of the shine and smooth top and sides works well with the more tossled ends at the bottom.

5

5. Twist It Up

If you like the idea of an updo, but your hair is too short or it is too fine, then this twisted “do” is perfect. It is young, fun and adds a modern edge to a special occasion look. Simply twist and pin sections around your head until all your hair is up. Working a little mouse or texturizing product into your hair help the twist stay in place better.

The website features a clean, sleek design that reflects the salon’s image. The easy-to-navigate, informative site includes a listing of salon services, stylists’ bios, customer testimonials, current events and specials, as well as the Helen Charles Salon blog. The blog features an “Ask Helen” column where Helen will respond to frequently asked questions about hair styles, current trends and color issues. The Helen Charles Salon London is now also on Facebook and Twitter. “We have integrated social media into our site so we can instantly reach our clients and they can reach us,” explains Charles. The Helen Charles Salon’s Facebook page will feature “facebook fan only” specials and invitations to private events. The salon will also be using Twitter to announce last minute, heavily discounted appointments that are available on a first come, first serve basis. You don’t need to be on Facebook or Twitter to save at the salon. Anyone can sign up for the salon’s VIP Club on the new website. It’s free and easy! VIP members will receive a monthly email with salon news and VIP specials. Clients can save even more through the Helen Charles Salon Referral Program. Health & WellnesS Finally — A New Weight Loss Approach For Mother’s Day By Gabriela Rosenthal, MS

H

ow many times during the day do you stop to consider the important role mothers play in society? A mother can influence the lives of numerous others on a daily basis including their children, spouse, family, friends and teachers. According to the Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, the word mother is defined as, “a woman who has given birth to a child”. As I am the proud working mother of four great kids, I understand the pressure and importance of being the perfect role model for our children. As we head into the month of May we pause to reflect and appreciate the upcoming holiday of Mother’s Day. As women, we sometimes lose sight of just how much power we can actually wield when we want to. In between caring for our family, friends and financial needs we often take ourselves for granted and place everyone else’s needs in front of our own. I proclaim that we no longer have to take a back seat to the needs of others. This month I am putting forth a challenge to all women. I want each and every one of you to start taking better care of yourself. Little do you know, but by putting yourself first you will give your children an invaluable gift. Several years ago I tipped the scale at 260 pounds. At the time, I was completely focused on the wants and needs of my children; I never realized how much undo stress I was placing upon myself, my children and my husband. Considering where I was at during that stage in my life made me realize the following truth. It is nearly impossible for a size 24 woman to maintain an adequate amount of energy, stamina and discipline to be in charge and take control over any situation that may arise from her children. Personally, I was always tired and suffering from relentless back and hip pain. Migraine, headaches and asthma attacks became a routine part of my week. At the onset of my migraine pain, the smallest amount of sound or light made me nauseous. The slightest movement would send my entire body into a panic in anticipation of the discomfort about to befall me. At times, things got so bad for me that my family no longer socialized with any of our friends, and we seldom went outside to do activities because of the embarrassment I felt and the insecurities I carried with me everywhere I went. The thought of going out on a date with my husband would never enter my mind, inevitably resulting in the resentment I felt he held toward me. I was scared and felt very alone in the world. I was unsure what type of future my family, and I were inheriting from my downward spiral of unhappiness. In reality, what it took was a traumatic experience and 45 seconds of my life to fully understand that I had to change. I could not continue this way any longer. One day, I was driving home from my girlfriend’s house with my four children and I suffered a severe asthma attack. As I gasped for my next breath of air, I reached into my purse and realized I could not find my inhaler. I started to panic, and I pulled over to call my husband on the phone. I struggled to tell him that I could not breathe as it felt like I was suffocating to death. I told him where we were pulled over, and he raced to the scene with my inhaler in hand. After using the inhaler my lungs began to relax and my breathing became normal again. As I pulled into my driveway, I realized how lucky I was to be home again with my family. This was the moment in my life when I understood how out of control my life had become and how frequent my panic attacks were becoming. The next day my husband brought me a picture of myself he had just downloaded from the computer. He asked me to keep the picture with me as a reminder of what I was doing to myself. The picture and his words helped me understand the sad and painful truth. The person he had married was now trapped and living inside a shell of a body where it did not belong. It was time to unzip the costume I had been wearing for so long and allow the real Gabriela to return. My personal challenge

68 May 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com

to all women is to acknowledge the difficulties in our lives and put ourselves first. Over time I struggled to lose my excess weight but soon after, I immersed myself in the study of bariatric medicine with Elisabeth Cohn-Gelwasser, MD. Today, the knowledge I have gained and the personal experience I possess allows me to successfully teach other people the proper way to get healthy. This can be accomplished by understanding that we all have the inner strength to take care of ourselves and the loved ones in our lives. All that is needed is to align ourselves with the right team to feel empowered. To accomplish this task I surrounded myself with the leading experts in the weight loss field. Here are a few recommendations I would like to share with you in order to put yourself first and take back control of your life. Metabolism is a word that everyone talks about. We often times consider what it really means and how it effects our daily lives. Metabolism is the amount of energy (calories) that your body burns while at rest. Your Body Mass Index (BMI) has a direct connection with muscles in your body and is related to your pattern of eating. Our bodies make a natural physiological shift starting in our mid 20’s for women, with men experiencing this shift to a lesser degree. We tend to lose about 1015 percent of lean body mass every decade. We lose approximately 7 pounds of lean muscle tissue and gain 15 pounds of body fat every decade. Obviously this changes the shape of our body as well as slowing down the way we burn the food we eat. In a woman’s mid 40’s, we may have lost 15 pounds of muscle tissue and replaced it with 30 pounds of fat. Routinely, the scales will tell us that we have gained 15 pounds; however, the situation is actually much worse underneath the surface. Muscle tissue is precious. It is the part of the body that drives that much needed metabolism and its loss leads to a drain of vitality, vigor and energy. Unfortunately, the situation gets worse for women after menopause. Due to dramatic changes in hormones the rate of muscle tissue loss doubles. The risk of osteoporosis greatly increases and bone loss occurs. On a positive note, we have learned that these unhealthy changes are the result of not enough muscle building and maintaining activity. This reality can be altered and reversed by simply putting a proper exercise program in place. Make sure your routine consists of strength training and remember to always eat properly. Keep in mind; it is a well known fact that the body requires less energy as we get on in age. Just in time for spring, the Center is offering a no-obligation initial consultation at a reduced rate in an effort for patients to get healthy for summer. It’s Their Business Beautiful Homes Begin with AAA Remodelings By Stacey Bomser

AAA Remodelings clients have the added reassurance of knowing that Duarte, or his partner, will oversee their job. “We are the face of the company. We visit each job site at least once a day. Plus, all clients have our cell phone numbers so they can always contact us directly,” he explains, adding that his crews speak both English and Spanish. Although AAA Remodelings has an office in Weston, there is no showroom. “We come to our customers,” says Duarte. “We bring our samples directly to you. We are also happy to show you our portfolio of completed projects and provide client referrals.” The company provides a free written estimate, with no obligation. “There is no pressure,” states Duarte. “We understand that home improvement projects are a big investment. We want you to be completely confident in your purchase.” To schedule a complimentary consultation call AAA Remodelings at 954-446-6222. The company serves all of South Florida from Jupiter to Key Biscayne. It accepts Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

F

rom floor to ceiling, AAA Remodelings does it all. The Weston-owned and operated company specializes in the sales and installation of all types of flooring, as well as complete kitchen and bathroom remodeling and painting. The company also installs crown molding and baseboards. “You express your needs or dreams, we’ll give you the products and expertise to fulfill them,” states Carlos Duarte, who owns AAA Remodelings along with business partner Eduardo de Castro. “AAA Remodelings is your one source to bring a new life to your home.” Although the company may be relatively new, the partners bring an extensive background in home improvement to the business. They spent nearly a decade working in the flooring industry, both wholesale and retail, and bring this expertise to their new company. “We don’t sell any products we don’t believe in,” states Duarte. AAA Remodeling offers the best brands in the industry, such as Armstrong, Wilsonart, Quick-Step, and Mohawk, at highly competitive prices. The company offers three types of wood flooring: laminate (veneer on mdf), engineered (layer of real wood on plywood) and solid wood. Duarte recommends engineered wood because it has all the beauty and variation of real wood with the stability of laminate. “This product is best for the Florida climate. It will not expand and contract because of the humidity. Plus, because it is made with real wood it looks so natural, you would never know it is not solid wood.” AAA Remodelings also sells carpet, marble and Porcelanosa. “This is an exclusive brand of tile manufactured in Spain. It is comparable to marble, but the look is truly one-of-a-kind,” says Duarte, noting that the company recently installed a Porcelanosa tile that looks exactly like hardwood in a condo on Miami Beach. Regardless of which product you select, customers have the confidence of knowing it will be installed properly. “We have two crews, but we went through at least 15 before we found these guys,” shares Duarte. “They are the best in the business. They are responsible and trustworthy and they do exceptional work. They are truly artists.”

Inspiring Individual Weston Doctor Leads Effort to Help Haiti By Stacey Bomser

I

n the days and weeks following the massive earthquake in Haiti, we opened our hearts and our wallets to help the people of this impoverished island nation. Months have passed and for many people what happened is Haiti is now a mere memory, but not for Dr. Aldy Castor. The Weston obstetrician and gynecologist was in Haiti when the quake struck and now is leading the effort to help Haiti. On the evening of January 12, Dr. Castor was enjoying a pleasant dinner at a friend’s restaurant in Port-au-Prince. “Suddenly, there was an apocalyptic noise, as if my head were tied to a railroad track in Times Square, New York City, during rush hour,” describes Dr. Castor. “Then the ground violently shook, I lost my balance. I saw the building falling towards me. I ran to a big palm tree on my right at the end of the yard and just hung on. The shaking was continuing. I did not know if it would ever end. Probably, one hundred thousand had died in that minute of shaking.” As night fell, Dr. Castor discovered his sister trapped underneath concrete slabs in the ruins of her school. Despite his efforts and that of neighbors, she had to stay there overnight until rescue workers could free her from the rubble. Dr. Castor’s own apartment had been heavily damaged, so he slept outside like everyone else. “In the daylight hours, when I went out to find food and water, I saw a completely destroyed city, like a scene from a First World War movie,” he explains. “On the second day, bodies wrapped in sheets appeared on the streets and sidewalks. There were growing piles of garbage and debris.” It would be days until he would be able to get a flight back home, so he set about doing what he went to Haiti for in the first place, to provide humanitarian aid. Dr. Castor went to the national civil defense office and to the various hospitals to help. “We discovered there were a big mismatch between the availability of doctors and other relief workers, and the supplies and facilities they needed to do their job. So we helped match them up. This is the kind of thing that the Haitian Resource Development Foundation has been doing for years.” Dr. Castor is president of the Haitian Resource Development Foundation (HRDF). The nonprofit foundation, which is based here in Weston, has worked with partners in Haiti for more than 30 years and, according to its website, supports programs designed to help Haitians become more independent. He was in Haiti on behalf of the organization when the earthquake struck. He had invited Stuart Leiderman, an environmental refugee and ecological restoration specialist, to visit the island as part of an international effort to find ways of protecting small coastal villages like Dr. Castor’s hometown of Aquin, which suffers from cycles of flash floods and droughts. The two men were working on designing containment lakes to collect flood waters. Their plan was temporarily put on hold, as Dr. Castor turned his attention to earthquake relief efforts. In late January, he returned to Haiti along with Dr. Wiener Leblanc, a HaitianAmerican pediatrician from Weston and HRDF board member. The two were there to treat patients and coordinate activities of doctors from the Association of Haitian Physicians Abroad. Although only a few weeks had passed, Dr. Castor says the situation in Port-auPrince was getting worse. “I saw more crumbling buildings and destruction because of the aftershocks. People were under makeshift tents all over the city. I could see, smell, hear, and palpate the human misery. What is stuck in my mind are the big green cadaveric aggressive flies all over the city. These flies came from the cadavers, buried underneath the rubbles. Every time I tried to eat something they were all over my food.” Now back in Weston, Dr. Castor is devoting his time and energy to coordinating relief efforts in Haiti. This includes continuing the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program, which educates communities about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills such as search and rescue, disaster medical operations, fire safety and team organization. These CERT-trained individuals can then assist others in their community following an emergency when professional responders are not immediately available to help.

Mission Possible - As president of the Haitian Resource Development Foundation, Dr. Aldy Castor has been providing humanitarian aid to Haiti for years. He was in Haiti on behalf of the foundation when the earthquake struck and is encouraging the community to support HRDF’s relief efforts.

He calls HRDF’s work in Haiti “Mission Possible,” saving Haitians not Haiti. According to Dr. Castor, this requires focusing efforts on directly helping the Haitian people by continuing programs such as CERT, emergency medical training for physicians and nurses, planning for catchment lakes, and improving drinking water. “Also, especially after the earthquake, it is essential to have a positive attitude that recovery is and will be possible. There is no room for failure or pessimism.” The Weston community can help support HRDF’s “Mission Possible.” Monetary donations are greatly appreciated. “We also need donations of camping tents and laptop computers so our staff in Haiti can continue their work and help the population at large, especially the students,” explains Dr. Castor. “Here in town, we also urgently need the free use of a car and apartment, and office equipment, so we can keep and attract experts to work with us day by day and keep things going while others are in Haiti.” To learn more about the Haitian Resource Development Foundation and its earthquake relief efforts visit www.hrdf.org. Tax deductible donations can be mailed to HRDF, 854 Marina Drive, Weston, Florida, 33327.

How a Lawyer Can Help You Earn and Save Money By Michael E. Muchnick, PA

F

or those of you business minded individuals who wish to earn money by starting up a business an attorney can help you to form a corporation, partnership or any other business entity. Lawyers can prepare shareholder agreements, purchase and sale agreements, employment contracts, manufacturing agreements, distribution agreements, non-compete agreements and prepare any other necessary contracts.

For those of you already in business a lawyer can help you save money by negotiating to resolve corporate and partnership disputes, breaches of contracts, and collect on contracts and debts. If negotiations have failed a lawyer can go to court to enjoin, enforce, or obtain monies for breaches. If you are having personal family issues a lawyer can help you save money by negotiating a marital settlement agreement, child custody, alimony and other settlement agreements. The lawyer can utilize the court system to obtain restraining orders, resolve paternity issues, obtain name changes or resolve custody, alimony and asset and debt allocation issues that cannot be resolved by agreement. In terms of your real estate needs, if you are buying a new home a lawyer can help prepare the necessary documents. If you are having problems with an existing home a lawyer can help you with a foreclose defense or loan modification or a short sale. If you are renting a home and are having a dispute with a landlord a lawyer can perform all the technicalities that need to be complied with to enforce your rights. If you have been injured in an auto accident or any accident lawyer can explain all the benefits you may be entitled to as well as interpret all applicable insurance policies. Should you slip and fall, be the target of sexual or physical assault, or any other accident lawyer can negotiate a settlement or file suit so you receive monies for those injuries. If your life insurance, health insurance, auto, home owners or other insurance denies you coverage a lawyer can advise you if this is justified and if not fight to enforce your rights under the policy. In order to save money for you and your relatives regarding the disposition of your assets upon your death according to your wishes a lawyer can prepare a will. This document can protect you, your spouse and your children. The lawyer can also prepare documents relating to one’s choices should you or a loved one need to be kept alive by life support. A lawyer can create documents to give you the power to chose who will make your health decisions should you become incapacitated due to illness or a sudden accident. This article is not legal advice. To learn how these issues affect you directly or for further information you can contact Michael E. Muchnick at his Weston office 954-385-6363 or http://www.muchnicklaw.com.

legally speaking The Role of Experts in Divorce Proceedings By Evan H. Baron, PA

I

n many instances, depending upon the complexity of a case, expert witnesses maybe retained to assist in both the preparation and presentation of the evidence. These experts are not always necessary and are often not always affordable. Their involvement requires additional fees to be paid for their time and expertise. Prior to retaining such an expert I will always consult with my client to advise them of the necessity of such a witness and the anticipated costs. Sometimes it is just not affordable to the client. There are certain cases when an expert witness is absolutely necessary to prepare the case for both trial and settlement. It is impossible to structure a settlement if we are not aware of the actual values of certain assets. The actual value of the marital home or the family business are important factors which must be determined. Judges will not guess as to these values and web sites which estimate certain values are not dependable or even admissible in court. Here are some of the experts we often encounter in a dissolution case:

Common Immigration Questions By Elizabeth R. Blandon

Employment

Q. The construction company that filed my I-140 has

problems due to the economy. If I get a job with another employer while my residency case is pending, will that be a problem? A. Residency is filed on a different application and is processed differently than the I-140 petition. Residency is based on the foreigner’s eligibility, not the company’s. If the residency case has been filed and is pending more than 180 days, the I-140 will still be valid if the foreigner finds a same or similar job. If the residency case has not been filed, however, that is probably because the priority date is not yet current. Fortunately, there is no requirement in the immigration laws that a foreigner be employed be either the former or the second employer until the legal permanent resident case is approved. Q. The employer who filed the petition for me last year has gone bankrupt. Does that mean that my residency case will be denied? A. Not necessarily. An employer’s petition is automatically revoked if the business terminates. However, if the residency case was pending more than 180 days, you can still become a legal permanent resident. What you will need to present at the residency interview is evidence of an offer of employment from a new employer in a same or similar occupation.

▸ Actuary or pension evaluator to determine the value of a pension

Q. Is it true that a foreigner must apply for

▸ Property appraiser to determine the true value of real property. ▸ Forensic Accountant to determine the assets, liabilities and income of the parties.

▸ Appraiser to determine value of personal property such as jewelry or collectibles ▸ Guardian Ad Litem to represent the interests of minor children ▸ Psychologist to evaluate emotional issues of the parties and or their minor children. ▸ Drug counselor to determine if in fact either party may have a drug dependency. As you can see this could be a rather exhaustive list. Each of the above individuals are either privately retained or appointed by the court. Sometimes each of the parties retains their own expert. Each of these experts may render a differing opinion which would result in the Judge determining which of the experts’ testimony he/she will depend on. The opinion of an expert is not to be taken as absolute fact and therefore their opinions are subject to attack, just as like any other witness in court. The hope is that with proper preparation and a credible expert witness, the chances of a fair settlement is more likely. Of course not all cases require the assistance of an expert. Often times the issues in dispute can be resolved without their knowledge and expertise. As I have often stated, no two cases are the same and as such they cannot be treated in a similar manner. If you need any further advice or information please feel free to contact my office at 954 385-09160 or check my website at www.evanbaron.com

Asylum

asylum within one year of arriving or else not at all? A. No, that’s not true. While a one year deadline exists, the beauty of the law is that there are always exceptions. If changed circumstances or extraordinary circumstances excuse the filing delay, the foreigner can still obtain asylum. In one case, this author represented a foreigner who received asylum 19 years after she entered the country.

Family

Q. I became a resident through marriage to a U.S. citizen. At the interview, the

Immigration Officer told us that 90 days before my green card expires I have to file a form with my spouse to remove the conditions or I will be deported. My marriage has soured terribly and he does not wish to sign. What can I do? A. It depends on what you mean by your marriage “souring.” If you mean a divorce is imminent, go ahead and do that. Then you can file without his signature. If you mean he is (just) being incredibly mentally abusive, but both of you want to work this through and remain married, there is an exception to joint filing based on extreme mental cruelty. This article is not legal advice because exceptions may apply to your personal situation. However, if you have questions, we have answers. Submit the questions via e-mail to ERBlandonLaw@aol.com with the subject heading “OCW” or call us for a consultation at 954-385-0157. The office of Elizabeth R. Blandon, Esq., is conveniently located in Weston. More information on her credentials are available at www.Blandon-Law.com.

How To Avoid Deficiency Judgments After Foreclosure, Deed in Lieu or Short Sale By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

A

s terrible as it may seem to lose your home through a foreclosure, most people believe that after the foreclosure, their biggest financial headache is behind them. However, former homeowners may still be on the hook if there’s a difference between what they owed on the mortgage and what the bank sold the house at the foreclosure auction. This is called a “deficiency judgment.” Deficiency judgments are ticking time bombs that can explode years after borrowers lose their homes.

A lender also has the right to seek a deficiency judgment against homeowners who convinced their bank to approve a short sale and even in cases where the bank takes back the property through a deed in lieu of foreclosure. Releasing title does not necessarily end the debt. A mortgage has two parts: a pledge of collateral (represented by the home), and a promise to pay the loan. Lenders may release property liens to facilitate short sales without releasing borrowers from their obligations to pay. Lenders or collection agencies may wait until debtors have recovered financially before seeking a deficiency judgment. In Florida, the bank can wait up to 5 years to file. Once the court grants a deficiency judgment, the lender has 20 years to collect it. Moreover, the lender can request your financial records, garnish your wages, repossess your vehicles, and even freeze your bank accounts! In order to short-circuit lenders’ attempts to seek a deficiency judgment in the future, it is imperative that after the home is sold at foreclosure auction, the former homeowner immediately file for bankruptcy protection. Since the deficiency judgment would be considered an unsecured debt, it will be forever discharged through the bankruptcy proceeding and the bank could never collect it. In “short sale” or deed in lieu scenarios, most lenders are willing to release the deficiency judgment amount. However, many borrowers may not be aware that they have to ask for such a release. If you are pursuing a short sale or a deed in lieu of foreclosure, be sure to ask the bank to release you from any further obligation under the mortgage. If the bank refuses, bankruptcy proceedings can also avoid any liability after a short sale or return of your property to the bank through a deed in lieu. Home DÉcor What’s Hot for 2010 By Myriam Payne, Interiors by Decorating Den

E

ach year new color and design trends abound, and most of my clients are curious as to where these new ideas actually originate. Did you know that most of our home furnishing design trends actually follow design trends in the woman’s fashion industry? So what you see walking down the red carpet today, might actually be translated into one of the hottest design trends of tomorrow! SIMPLE, CLEAN LINES ABOUND! The transitional design style is following more modern, contemporary style influences than traditional ones. Look for cleaner, straighter lines in upholstered and occasional furniture styles. We also see a trend to smaller scaled furniture styles. And many of today’s new occasional tables tend to feature straight rather than curved lines. TEXTURE CONTINUES TO TAKE CENTER STAGE! Whether you chose to display textures in your upholstery – leather, ultra suede, or micro fiber, or in your wall art, with dramatic wrought iron designs, texture continues to add drama to any décor. Area rugs in various styles, shapes and designs help add visual interest to hard-wood

or tile floors. And draperies deliciously designed with silks, and embroidered patterns continue to be all the rage. DETAILS! Brass or silver toned nail head trim instantly adds drama when outlining the wood frames of many of today’s furniture pieces. Appliqués, embossing, leather piping, beaded fringe, and dramatic tassels and tiebacks continue their everlasting popularity. PAISLEY PRINTS PIZZAZZ! We’ve seen years when the trends have gone from large dramatic florals, to small geometric designs. One of the hottest print styles for the coming years will be paisley designs. This beautifully ornate pattern was commonly used for 19th century shawls manufactured in the town of Paisley, Scotland. And the Scots got the idea from Kashmir shawls made in India around the 1800’s. Filled with a myriad of gorgeous colors, paisley designs add excitement and pizzazz to any décor. GREY — THE NEW BEIGE! When it comes to color trends, we’ll be seeing a more glamorous and dramatic color palette this year. Grey is definitely the new beige, and purple continues to be a hot accent color! Dine in Style By Faryal Ali, Beautiful Windows

I

want to share with you a most gorgeous design I recently did for a fun couple. My clients have style and classy taste. Their décor is eclectic and they wanted a softer feel in their main dining room, minus fuss. Their request was to go neutral but not bland and to use fabric but keep it light on the eyes. The end result was a cozy, elegant retreat to host dinner parties. I put operable shades made from a soft semi-sheer inside the window frame. The soft folds on the shades follow the folds on the valance and create harmony. For a splash of color, I introduced the merlot in the layering of the side panels. These panels serve to conceal the walls in between the windows and create continuity in the design. The panels are pouffed for added BEFORE interest. When designing panels be creative: tied back, hang straight or pouffed as in this case. Embellish by adding trim or banding. The crowning element is the layered valance which re-introduces the splash of merlot color. The soft folds of the valance flow with the soft folds repeated throughout the overall design. Note how well proportioned the valance is with respect to the height of the windows and the scale of the room. The true beauty of any design is apparent only when the elements of color, pattern, shape and scale work harmoniously together.

School News Continued from Page 20 one of the tomato plants and tried to plant it. He learned that is called germination. Unfortunately, he says animals got to it and it didn’t grow. But some of his classmates, inspired by their class project, have planted successful gardens at home. Jonny is growing tomatoes. Heather and her father are growing tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers and strawberries in their organic garden. Mrs. Koche says as a teacher it’s been wonderful to see her students so enthusiastic about learning. She plans to wrap up this lesson with a field trip to Whole Foods. “This will bring the food cycle full circle. Students will see how the food we eat goes from the garden to the store to their table.” The Pizza Garden was sponsored by Home Depot of Weston. Volunteers from the company designed, built and planted the garden during the school’s Home Depot Project Day in October. Home Depot generously donated all of the supplies, including framing lumber, soil and six varieties of tomatoes, bell pepper, as well as rosemary, basil and parsley. The pepper plant was late to blossom, coincidentally yielding its first pepper the day of the pizza party.

Health & Wellness Continued from Page 60 delay their response and think about the ramifications of the request and/or offer. Simply delaying the impulse to answer immediately tends to give women more perspective as well as a sense of power. They are then able to give generously of their time and talents without anger and resentment. As we travel in our journey of womanhood let us teach our daughters through our own examples that they are valuable, worthy and lovable despite being imperfect and flawed. Let us also give them a voice and assist them in setting realistic attainable goals for self love. If you or a woman you know is struggling with meeting unrealistic expectations of herself please contact Alina, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, at A Place for Growth, in Weston at 954-257-6393 or via email at Alina@APlaceforGrowth.com.

Positive Parenting Continued from Page 33 Due to these challenges, sometimes exceptional children do require a different curriculum and environment to accommodate them, but most often a child’s needs may be met within their norm peer group. Regardless of placement in class, or level of ability, every child benefits from enrichment. Labels do not define our children, nor do they provide all the answers to meeting their individual needs. As parents, our focus shouldn’t be so much on a label, as it should be on discovering our children’s unique gifts and talents and exploring the many avenues in which their needs can be met. This signature dish was inspired by Chef Ascanio’s visit with the Saudi prince. “He told me that his favorite foods were fois gras, filet mignon and chocolate. I was able to fuse these flavors together in this dish,” explains the chef. It features fois gras pâté over seared beef tender loin, sautéed Crimini and Portobello mushrooms, and roasted plum tomatoes on a slice of Campesino-style bread with a delicate Swiss chocolate demi-glace sauce. It is a steakhouse after all, and Malbec offers nine distinct cuts on its A La Brasa menu. Malbec’s Cowboy Steak is the signature steak. At 19, he left home to attend culinary school. His first job was at the Intercontinental Tamanaco Hotel in Caracas. From there he was recruited by Master Chef Douglas Rodriguez to come to Miami to work at Yuca on Lincoln Road. That opportunity launched his career. In the following years, Chef Ascanio worked at the exclusive Crane Resort in Barbados where he has the opportunity to cook for the Prince of Saudi Arabia, as well as the famed Fontainebleau resort on Miami Beach. He also opened Ricky Martin’s restaurant, Casa Salsa, on South Beach. But his greatest opportunity came when given the chance to create the menu at Malbec Steakhouse. Executive Chef Ascanio has infused over twenty years of experience into his Latin-Mediterranean inspired menu. “The chef is much more than just a cook, he is an artist,” states Sasson. “Food is his palate and each dish he creates is a work of art.”

It features lobster medallions served with green herbed rice, mango salsita and a fragrant white wine lobster broth. “The Chilean Sea Bass features flaky sautéed farm-raised sea bass, accompanied with homemade gratinato potatoes and mixed asparagus in a saffron beurre-blanc sauce. “The chef puts his special touch on these potatoes,” notes Sasson. “Nestled in the middle of the potatoes is a thin slice of prosciutto.” Chef Ascanio created a section of the menu dedicated to his grandmother. Abuela’s Kitchen features some of his favorite foods growing up, including his grandmother’s Seafood Paella. According to the menu, it’s a marriage of the best seafood stewed together in harmony over rice. The chef also uses many of his grandmother’s special recipes as his soup of the day. “Growing up she made a different soup each day for lunch, depending upon what was fresh. I am doing the same thing here at the restaurant,” says the chef. “I have about 50 varieties that will rotate. I will never serve the same soup twice in a month.” As extensive as the restaurant’s menu is, the wine list is equally impressive. “Malbec Steakhouse is as much about wine as it is steak,” states Sasson, who just happens to be a professional sommelier. The state-of-the-art wine room holds 900 bottles. “We will feature about 150 different labels, including eight to ten Malbec wines,” explains Sasson. In addition to the bottles, the restaurant serves over 25 wines by the glass. Malbec Steakhouse will soon be introducing a wine tasting menu, which will feature a three or four course meal paired with specific wines. In the meantime, Sasson is more than happy to make a suggestion. As manager, he takes great pride in meeting all of his guests, discussing the chef’s inspirations, and sharing his wine expertise. The restaurant also features a full bar. “Bartender Bruce Figueroa is our chef behind the bar,” states Sasson. “He takes a lot of pride in his signature cocktails. The entire bar menu was his creation.” Figueroa’s Five Diamond took third place in a national bartending competition. This award-winning cocktail features Ultimat vodkas with premium sake, touched with fresh lychee juice, shaken and strained into a martini glass. It is served with lychees stuffed with fresh seasonal berries. Another one of his signature drinks is the Mint Mo-Tea-To. This is prepared using the restaurant’s gourmet teas. “We feature a different tea each day,” says Figueroa. “This unique twist on the mojito features sweet tea muddled with fresh mint and lime, then infused with our signature fresh brewed tea and blended with pure cane syrup.” Throughout the summer, guests can sample these signature cocktails during Afternoon Bliss. “Each day from 3-5pm, we will be serving drinks and samplings in our outdoor lounge,” states Sasson. Malbec Steakhouse is located at 1799 Bell Tower Lane in the Weston Town Center. It is open for lunch and dinner daily. Lunch hours are 11:30am to 3:00pm Monday through Saturday. Dinner hours are 5:30 to 11:00pm Monday through Thursday and 5:30 to midnight on Friday and Saturday, however the kitchen closes at 11:30pm. The restaurant is open from 11:30 to 10:00pm on Sunday. Pet of the Month

“Savannah Banana Ceballos”

A

s the youngest “daughter” to Nicholas and Noi Ceballos, this Yorkshire Terrier has a very mellow attitude. She recently celebrated her third birthday. Savannah is a mommy’s girl. She loves to race in from the house every morning and jump onto the bed to wake us. If we don’t play with her…she licks us to death! Her favorite thing to do is roam the house and lick everyone and everything in sight. Her favorite spot to lounge is on mommy and daddy’s bed. Savannah enjoys laying in bed cuddled up with her daddy and her (doggie) mommy Sophia, also a Yorkshire Terrier. She does not like balloons, balls, and anything that is floating in the air! Savannah is a big sweetheart and we love her very much!

Pet Care

“My Pet’s Going to be on Prozac?” By Dr. Peter Birzon, DVM

N

owadays, it seems like every problem in people is labeled as a “disorder” or a syndrome. ADD, ADHD, or OCD etc. is as commonplace as blonde hair or eye color. If we look closer at the problem, usually there are other factors involved... family, environmental, school or work. Well, guess what folks, problems such as OCD, anxiety syndromes, and aggression disorders are almost as common in our pets. Every day at thousands of animal hospitals, drugs like Prozac, Wellbutrin, Buspar, and many more psychoactive drugs are given to pets that now have documented behavioral disorders. We have board certified animal behaviorists at specialty hospitals that deal with the cases general practitioners are unable to manage. Are we passing our societies ills and stresses to our pets? We all know how “in tune” our pets are to our feelings and emotional states. Mine seem to sense if I’m happy, sad, angry etc. so it would be logical that they are affected by these mood changes. How does your pet respond or act when there’s yelling or discord in the house? How about when you’re in a great mood and really upbeat? Of course they’re affected but their environment is not the only factor at play here. First, some pets are simply not chemically balanced from a neurological viewpoint. In other words, they are genetically predisposed to certain behavioral issues. The Jack Russell terrier that can’t stop playing with his ball (OCD), or the Doberman that can’t stop licking his/her leg (OCD) or the Beagle that chews on the walls and furniture when the owner leaves (separation anxiety) or the cat who urinates outside the litter box (inappropriate elimination disorder/anxiety) etc. These pets may come from great loving households but they have intrinsic psychological problems…not your fault! On the other hand…at closer examination, sometimes there are things that we do as their caregivers that may be making this problem worse.

It’s important that all the factors are looked at including possible medical causes (urinary tract infection, metabolic imbalances, pain from arthritis etc.). At Indian Trace Animal Hospital, we do an extensive history including diet and nutrition. Blood work and a urinalysis are performed along with a thorough examination of the patient because all pets are individuals! I can’t stress this enough. We need an individual approach for your pet. I use natural calmatives and remedies whenever possible but sometimes we need to incorporate the behavioral medications. We have some that are used only in veterinary medicine but we frequently use drugs that are found in the medicine cabinets all over the world (prozac, xanax etc.) It’s important to address the issue as early as possible and begin treatment and/or behavioral modification. Over time, with proper care, I’ve seen many of these “behavioral” cases resolve. Happier owner…happier pets!! Dr. Peter Birzon, DVM has been practicing veterinary medicine for over 20 years and has owned and operated four animal hospitals in South Florida. Indian Trace Animal Hospital is located in Weston at 1420 North Park Drive. You can reach him at Phone: 954-384-7147.

The Truth About Being Overweight

C

ardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in our nation. Over 70% of the US population is overweight and over 30% is considered obese. The combination of obesity and sedentary lifestyle is now the number 2 preventable cause of cardiovascular disease, second only to smoking. Many believe that it will soon become the number 1 preventable cause of heart disease. Additionally, certain cancers have a higher incidence in overweight people. Being overweight also contributes to a variety of other medical conditions including adult onset/type-2 diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, hyperlidemia (elevated cholesterol and triglycerides), sleep apnea, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and degenerative arthritis, just to name a few. These illnesses adversely affect the quality of our lives as well as drain our personal finances. Medical illness negatively impacts our personal and professional productivity and further depletes our economy because these conditions increase absenteeism and decrease bottom line profits. Health insurance costs keep going up. Many of the above conditions may be reversed or prevented if you are able to achieve a healthy weight. Despite this, often our health insurance does NOT cover weight loss programs, medically supervised or not. Many employers recognize this huge financial drain that is attributable to increased health insurance costs, as well as diminished employee productivity, and have become proactive by either funding weight loss and wellness programs for their employees directly or by insisting that their health insurance company provide an effective weight loss and wellness program to their employees. If you are overweight and have struggled to lose weight you are well aware of how difficult it is to lose pounds. Many of us have tried a variety of ‘weight loss programs’ and may have been able to achieve some success, but in all likelihood if you are still reading this, you have not been able to ‘keep it off’. You are not alone; most people share your experience. In fact, the national success rate for sustained weight loss is estimated by some to be less than 10% over time. Most people inaccurately believe or accept that as one gets older it is natural to get heavier. This makes no empiric sense. As you get older, bone and muscle mass tend to decrease. Why would anyone assume it is natural to gain weight with age as the structures that support our weight are less capable of doing just that? This is one reason why many of us experience the aches and pains of ’getting older’ as we also gain weight. THIS DOES NOT HAVE TO BE SO. If you think back to your last trip to Disney World, you were able to get a glimpse of middle aged Americans who are typically overweight, in contrast to Europeans and elder Asians, who typically are not. What makes us different? Certainly genetics does in part but it is reported that as Asians move to the USA and adopt a Western lifestyle, their weight increases and so do the illnesses that are associated with a Western lifestyle. If they move back to their native country, their weight comes off. Furthermore, as our Western lifestyle is adopted in China, obesity is increasing and so are the illnesses that are associated with it and are endemic in our country. These facts provide us with good insight as to what has led us to gain weight and keep us overweight. Only when we begin to understand the root cause of our country’s weight problem and what keeps us there are we able to come up with a true and lasting solution to this problem. In the coming issues I will explain this in terms that are clear and make sense, so you can see how we, as a society and as individuals, have gotten to where we are today, and how we can implement life changing strategies to gain control over food as opposed to food having control over us! You might be surprised, and you will be empowered! Dr. Barry Schiff is currently the Medical Director of University Wellness and Weight Loss Centers, LLC located in Pembroke Pines, FL, and is a board certified Cardiologist and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. He has served as both the Chief of Medicine and Chief of the Medical Staff of Memorial Hospital Pembroke and as the President/CEO of University Heart Institute Cardiovascular Group, LLC.

Can Do Kid Weston Boy Overcomes Odds, Now Speaking Out to Support March of Dimes

A

t first glance, Joshua Hoffman is your typical first grader. But this seven-yearold is anything but ordinary. While most kids are going to school or playing with friends, he is traveling to a different city almost every week speaking on behalf of the organization that saved his life. Joshua is the 2010 National Ambassador for the March of Dimes. Born four months too early, Joshua spent the first three-and-a-half months of his life in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU) at Baptist Hospital. He was born so early and with so many underdeveloped organs that doctors could not say whether he would survive – or if he would ever walk, talk, see or hear. Joshua overcame those odds thanks to the research and treatments funded by the March of Dimes. Melanie Hoffman, Joshua’s mother, credits the March of Dimes not only with saving her son’s life, but giving her a second son, Alex. “The March of Dimes funds research for the treatment of preemies. It was a March of Dimes funded treatment that helped Joshua breathe before his lungs matured,” explains Melanie. “And when I got pregnant again, it was the March of Dimes that recommended I get weekly injections of a new drug not yet approved by the FDA to prevent pre-term labor. I carried Alex to 36 weeks. Although he was technically a preemie, he was healthy and able to come home with me.” She owes a lot to this organization, and that’s why she got involved with the March of Dimes as a volunteer. “I was invited to speak at an event and I asked if I could bring Josh. I thought that telling our story and seeing Josh on stage was proof that March of Dimes works,” explains Melanie. “He spoke at the end of my speech and got a standing ovation. After that, he always wanted to speak with me.” The Hoffmans soon became local March of Dimes Ambassadors. It was such a rewarding experience that they applied to be National Ambassador. After an intensive application process, which included phone interviews and a site visit, Joshua was named the 2010 National Ambassador. “As the 2010 National Ambassador for the March of Dimes I travel the country and meet lots of people and ask them if they can join my fight for preemies,” shares Joshua, who has already visited 15 different states and over 30 different cities

sharing his story and promoting the March for Babies, the March of Dimes’ largest fundraiser. “I also go to hospitals and meet the doctors and nurses in the NICU’s.” Wise beyond his years, Joshua has delivered some very powerful speeches. “At March for Babies rallies, Joshua encourages people to donate just six rolls of dimes, which weigh as much as he did when he was born. He came up with that on his own, as a way of illustrating that every little bit counts,” shares his mother Melanie. “It’s inspiring to listen to him. Here is a seven-year-old helping the organization that helped save his life.” As National Ambassador, Joshua has been afforded some very unique opportunities, such as meeting the President of the United States. “Meeting President Obama was so special. He was so nice and so friendly,” says Joshua. “When we were in the Oval Office, President Obama gave me and Alex a big hug. I will never forget it.” Although tough to top meeting the President, Joshua says one of his favorite experiences as ambassador was going to a NASCAR race in Phoenix. “I got to go to the NASCAR race because the March of Dimes and March for Babies logo was on the FedEx Racing #11 car. When we were there we watched the car be in the race and before the race we got to go on Pit Road where all the race cars were! My brother Alex and I even got to sit in the FedEx Racing car and it was the coolest thing ever!” You can read all about Joshua’s adventures and experiences on his blog, www. marchofdimes.com/joshfightsforpreemies. Almost every day he posts photos and details on what he’s been doing and who he has been meeting as he travels the country on behalf of the March of Dimes. According to Melanie, “Josh says it’s the best journal he can have of his once-in-a-lifetime experience, and he knows it’s something he can always go back and read and remind him how he spent every day helping to fight for preemies as the 2010 March of Dimes National Ambassador.” Joshua and his family will be back in town on Saturday, May 8th for the Broward County March for Babies at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park. As of this writing, his team is currently the number one family team in the nation for fundraising. Their goal is to raise $30,000. You can support Team Joshua Hoffman by making a donation at http://www.marchforbabies.org/mahoffman. The March of Dimes is dedicated to improving the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Since 1970, the organization has raised $1.8 billion from March for Babies. The money raised supports lifesaving research, services, education and advocacy that help babies get a healthy start.
