Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by by 1/31/17) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 20 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Adriana and Kelli – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Pines Family Chiropractic and it’s at 9841 Pines Blvd. Our phone number is 954-435-4380. Call Adriana or Kelli for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.PinesFamily.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at Pinesfamilychiro@bellsouth. net. – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $47. P.P.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

New Year Brings New Beginnings

N

ew Year’s Day serves as a point in time for many of us to make a change; our New Year’s Resolutions. These resolutions, big and small, can be a helpful way for people to motivate themselves to improve their lives in a positive way. Like many people, our New Year’s Resolutions are focused on living healthier lives: we want to exercise more, eat healthier, and sleep better. To achieve these goals, we must develop new healthy habits. William James, a turn-of-the-century psychologist, was one of the first researchers to study habit forming. He discovered three keys to establishing a new habit: (i) Creating an environment to reinforce the behavior you are seeking; (ii) Sticking to the new routine until the habit is fully formed; (iii) Acting now, without delay. For our resolution to get healthy, we have dedicated Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings to working out. We have pledged to make sure we don’t miss a day, at least for the first two months of the year. If you have a New Year’s Resolution, block out the time, don’t let anyone or anything interfere with your focus, and, in the words of the Nike slogan, Just do it! Wishing you a Happy & Healthy New Year!

BY DEBBY TEICH

L

ast month, Pembroke Pines children took out their winter jackets, hats and gloves for the annual Snowfest, presented by the City of Pembroke Pines and the Cultural Arts Department at the Pines Recreation Center. For many, it was the first time they had seen snow. Children played in 75 tons of snow, visited with Santa in his decked out sleigh, played reindeer games, wrote letters to Santa and attended Santa’s Toyland and Workshop. They also enjoyed musical entertainment, watched holiday performances, indulged in treats from the Food truck Round Up, and participated in a variety of activities, including face painting, rides, games, arts and crafts and more. Olga Martinez brought her two children to the event. “They had so much fun playing in the snow,” said Martinez. “It is their only chance to see snow and they look forward to it every year.”

Pembroke Pines residents had many other opportunities to celebrate the holidays, including the 20th Annual Santa’s Express Children’s Holiday Toy Delivery Program, presented by Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue, Annual Holiday Open House, Sundaes with Santa, Holiday Tea Party and more. Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Paramedics Earn First Place at ALS Competition BY DEBBY TEICH

T

he City of Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue ISO Class One Department Paramedics recently competed in the invitation-only ALS Competition and came in first place. The competition included twelve teams, representing some of the best teams from Fire Rescue agencies throughout the State of Florida. “This competition was a great experience,” said Captain Scott Gunn. “The members of the Pines ALS team are grateful we had the opportunity to compete and proud we took first place in this very difficult competition.” The Pembroke Pines paramedics competed in a variety of emergency medical scenarios that challenged their Advanced Life Support knowledge and abilities. Each team was dispatched to compete in three back-to-back emergent scenarios, which had as many as five patients and lasted as long as 12 minutes. “All the patients had critical injuries and illnesses requiring rapid and technical treatment,” said Captain Gunn. “The patients and scenarios challenged all the competitors. Everyone walked away learning something new.” The Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Department was established in 1960 as a

volunteer group of men. They served a community roughly one square mile with almost 1,500 residents. Today, the department serves a city which has grown to 34 square miles and over 164,000 residents. In 1998, the department earned its Class 1 Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating, which it still maintains. Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue members train year round for all hazards and maintain their skills and certifications through vigorous training. In 2007, the Department completed its transition to have all frontline units capable of providing Advanced Life Support (ALS). Pembroke Pines is one of 173 departments within the State of Florida delivering ALS, the highest level of emergency services available by a municipality, to the residents and businesses of Pembroke Pines. Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines Makes Sure That Students Are Not Hungry BY DEBBY TEICH

C

hildren who are hungry often have a difficult time learning and concentrating in school. Members of the Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines are partnering with New Horizon United Methodist Church, the Rotary Club of Hollywood, Sawgrass Ford and West Pines Community Church to make sure that this does not happen by providing needy students with enough food to eat on the weekends. They provide approximately 120 children at Driftwood, Stirling, Pasadena Lakes, Pine Lake, Pembroke Lakes, Palm Cove, Sunshine and A. C. Perry Elementary Schools with weekly bags of food through the Pack-A-Sack Program. All of the kids in the PackA-Sack program receive free lunch and/or breakfast, but have little to eat when school is not in session. To supplement, every Friday they receive bags of food with healthy options that will serve them at least three meals a day with two snacks for two days. During holidays and on long weekends, they receive some extra protein and sides. “It is sad to see the kids come running into the cafeteria to eat,” said Gail Quigley, who has been a member of the Rotary for 19 years. “We waste so much food in this country. No child should go hungry. It is critical that they get the proper nutrition in order to be successful.” Rotary members provide funding, help purchase the food, and deliver the bags to the schools. Volunteers from the New Horizon United Methodist Church help fill the bags. The church and other community groups also provide some funding.

Over the holidays, the Rotary provided families with extra food for the Thanksgiving, as well as a holiday gift. The West Pines Community Church contributed over 200 meal boxes for Thanksgiving and Christmas break to help ensure each family had the extra needed for the extended break time. “During the Thanksgiving holiday, the children are home for five days instead of just the two for a regular weekend,” said Quigley. “We need to provide food for those additional days. All children should have a gift for the holidays. This year our Rotary Club provided 120 books for the holiday bags. Literacy is very important to Rotary International.” For the past seven years, the Rotary Club has also been providing all students at A.C. Perry Elementary with a book for the holidays. In December, they purchased 1,800 books to make sure that each student could have at least two books to read. The same number of books was provided to the students at Oriole Elementary. “The kids cannot develop a love of reading if they only read at school,” said Quigley. “By the time they graduate, they may have received as many as 16 books from the Rotary.” Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines meets every Thursday, 12:15pm, at Club 19 at the Pembroke Lakes Golf and Racket Club, 10500 Taft Street, in Pembroke Pines. Pembroke Pines Police Department Offers Citizens Police Academy COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

R

esidents and business owners are invited to register for Class 45 of the Pembroke Pines Police Department Citizen’s Police Academy (CPA). Twice a year, the Pembroke Pines Police Department offers the 15-week class for people, 18 and older, who live or work in Pembroke Pines. It is like law enforcement 101 for citizens and business owners. The class meets on Thursdays, from 7pm to 10pm. The next class begins on February 9. “The CPA experience gives participants a unique insight into what it takes to be in law enforcement and opportunities to experience police work first hand,” said Cheryl Watters Pembroke Pines Police Service Aide with the Community Affairs Unit, Explorer and Volunteer Programs. “They also see firsthand that being a police officer is not as easy as it looks on TV.” The course is a comprehensive overview of law enforcement. It includes both classroom and field instructions. Attendees get to ride along with a police officer and shoot firearms at the Pembroke Pines Training Center. They get exposure to the Police Department’s specialized units, including: K-9, Crime Scene, Patrol Operations, Detective Bureau, Dispatch, Community Policing, Defensive and Weapon training, and much more. Some of the topics they learn about include: patrol operations, traffic radar and crash investigations, defensive tactics, homicide investigations, patrol weapons, internet fraud and ID theft, domestic and juvenile investigations, CERT, and crime prevention. At the end, they participate in role reversal scenarios, so they can

test their new knowledge and gain an appreciation for how quickly police officers need to respond. At the awards and graduation ceremony graduates are presented with several items from the Pembroke Pines Police Department, including

a lapel pin, coffee mug, pen and certificate. CPA graduates often join the CPA Alumni Association, which was established in 1995. Members can assist the Pembroke Pines Police Department with community affairs volunteer programs, such as Community on Patrol, Pines Night Out or Pooches In Pines. They can also become a certified Parking Enforcement Specialist. “Our Pembroke Pines Citizens Police Academy Alumni members are a great asset to the City,” concluded Watters. The CPAAA has competed against other CPAAA’s around the United States and won the 2004 CPA Alumni of the Year from the National CPA Association. In 2006, the CPAAA won the 14th Annual Outstanding Program Award from the Broward Domestic Violence Council for establishing the Victim Contingency Fund. A limited number of spaces are available. Applications are available at www.ppines.com/police, click on Community Programs.

Pembroke Pines Residents Enjoy Ice Cream with a Cop BY DEBBY TEICH

T

he Pembroke Pines Police Department has been reaching out to adults and children in an effort to build relationships in the community through conversation. Pembroke Pines residents recently enjoyed something sweet, while visiting with Pembroke Pines police officers during the first “Cone with A Cop.” “Developing relationships creates opportunities for honest open conversations, which will help people realize police officers are actually their partner in keeping this community, our community, safe and drug free to the benefit of everyone,” said Officer Andrew Feldman of the Pembroke Pines Community Affairs Unit Feldman. “While the nature of our job is to enforce the law, so much more of our job is about helping people who live in Pembroke Pines.” Held at Chick-fil-A, 12203 Pines Boulevard, the one-hour event was a great opportunity for the children to have casual conversations with the officers and

enjoy an ice cream cone. The children asked the officers questions about police work, made requests for Santa and more. Earlier in the day, adults had their opportunity at the Pembroke Pines Police Department’s second “Coffee with a Cop” meet up at Dunkin Donuts, 9901 Pines Blvd. “Today was a home run - morning coffee for adults and ice cream cones in the afternoon for children,” said Feldman. The Community Affairs Unit is looking for additional businesses to host Coffee with a Cop or Cone with a Cop. Interested businesses should contact the Pembroke Pines Police Department Community Affairs Unit at 954-436-3274 or send an email to CAU@ppines.com.

Imaginations Came Alive at the StoryBook Festival BY DEBBY TEICH

any think of the library as a place to read a book in silence. Some of these books recently came alive at the 15th Annual StoryBook Festival at the Broward County Southwest Regional Library. Hosted by the City of Pembroke Pines and Broward County Public Library, the free family event offers a day of music, dance, storytelling, storybook characters, children’s performances and more. Thousands attended the event and many of them were dressed as their favorite storybook characters, such as Cinderella, Waldo and Harry Potter. This year’s theme was “Into the Forest.” Children followed a path through the enchanted forest, where they met some of their favorite characters, such as Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, The Three Little Pigs, and Rumpelstiltskin. Throughout the library, there were entertainers and storytellers recreating these stories and bringing them to life. Headlining the event was the Green Golly Project’s “Will the Real Rumpelstiltskin Puleeze Stand Up,” written and performed by Keith Torgan & Barbara Siesel. Other performances included “The 3 Little Circus Pigs,” performed by Atlantic Coast Theatre; an interactive performance by Steve Gryb, known as the pied Piper of Percussion; Suzy Hammer as Mother Goose and more. Liz Braden attended with her 10-year-old son, who was dressed as Harry Potter. “William has read all of the Harry Potter books,” said Braden. “He was so excited to have an opportunity to be Harry Potter for a day.”

Tyler Blanchard Earns His Eagle Scout Rank BY DEBBY TEICH

T

CAN DO DO KID KID CAN SECTION HEAD

yler Blanchard, 16, is on his way to sharing a prestigious title with notables like Neil Armstrong, Michael Bloomberg, Gerald R. Ford, Bill Gates Sr., James A. Lovell Jr. and many others. He recently received his Eagle rank from Troop 224, which is based in Pembroke Pines. Tyler joined the Boy Scouts of America ten years ago and has been working his way toward becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the program. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges, as well as completing an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages. Tyler knows many people who have served in the military, including his grandfather. For his project, he decided to raise money and solicit donations in order to buy, pack and send care packages to an infantry unit in the Middle East. “I love America,” said Tyler. “When I got the idea to give back to those men and woman who risk their lives to keep America safe, it seemed to me that it was the only option.” To raise money, he reached out to family, friends, friends of friends, and local organizations. He collected donations, such as magazines, snacks, headphones, movies, pens, paper, toiletries and other items to make the soldiers feel at home. He also wrote a note to include in each package that thanked them for their service. Once he had everything he needed, he organized a packing day with his step brother, friends and fellow scouts. The last step was to bring the boxes to the post office to mail. Tyler joined the Scouts to spend time outdoors, make new friends, learn leadership skills and more. His ultimate goal was always to earn his Eagle rank. “When I began Scouts, they told all of the kids that it is only a very small percentage that will actually get Eagle and have that honor,” said Tyler. “This sparked something in me to get it done and climb the challenging climb. Along the way, I picked up knowledge which I will use for the rest of my life.” Tyler plans to remain an active member of the troop and a mentor to the newer scouts until he turns 18 and ages out. He says he will always be available for phone calls, questions and visits from any of the scouts.

Flanagan High School to Host Falcon Fest Flea Market BY DEBBY TEICH

M

any are looking for ways to get rid of clutter, while others are in search of bargains. Charles W. Flanagan High School can help with both. On February 4, from 7am to 1pm, it will be hosting the 9th Annual Flea Market. Proceeds will be used to help send members of the school’s Student Government Association (SGA) to a leadership conference. “The Flea Market is a great opportunity to find something interesting, make some extra money, and contribute to high school students attending a prestigious conference that pertains to leadership development,” said D’King James, SGA president. The Falcon Fest Flea Market started as a fundraiser for the senior class. For the past eight years, it has been run by SGA. Fifty vendors typically participate in the event, which is held in the school’s parking lot. They offer great deals on books, clothing, DVDs, small furniture, kitchen items, shoes and much more. In the past, they have even sold chandeliers, street lights, car emblems and other unique items. The Student Government serves as the liaison between the student body and the administration. It promotes leadership, initiative and self-motivation. Students work closely with other school organizations, clubs, and teams. They foster school spirit by organizing a variety of activities, such as Homecoming, Pep Rallies, and

Freshman Invasion. They participate in community service projects through fundraisers for Humane Society, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, ALS Association and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Members also participate in Kefford’s Crew, where they collaborate with peer counseling to mentor other students who need someone to talk to about grades, social life, and other issues. James says that the SGA is hoping to raise approximately $2,500, which will be used to send students to the National Association of Student Councils. The conference promotes student council as the voice of the student body and encourages students to become involved in school, community leadership and decision making. Typically, eight to ten Flanagan students attend at a cost of $250 each. “The leadership conference is important because it provides students with an opportunity to hone their skills as leaders and provides skills that will have a positive effect on the jobs they acquire later in life,” said James. Vendor spots cost $20 dollars and include two parking spaces. Charles W. Flanagan High School is located at 12800 Taft Street. Sushiato

4483 Weston Road, Weston 754-223-7923 $$ The concept behind Sushiato, the art of sushi; is different from what we know as Sushi restaurants, because Sushiato presents Sushi with a “Latin Fusion” exotic and tropical flavors mixed with original Japanese cuisine and recipes. Weston is a clear example of what a great fusion gives a city: diverse nationalities, cultures, styles, accents and flavors that melt to create a new identity.

Slender Fit U Will Help You Lose Weight and Get Healthier IT’S THEIR BUSINESS

T

he holidays are a time for celebration and family. For most people, this can mean indulging in high calorie foods at festive meals and parties. If your clothes are feeling a little tighter after the holidays, or if you feel like 2017 is the perfect time to get healthier, Slender Fit U is the answer! Slender Fit U is helping their clients to lose the weight, get healthier and even reduce or eliminate medications with a very simple to follow medically supervised weight loss program.

Clients typically lose ½ to 1 pounds of actual body fat per day withGeri Kelleher, Owner out exercise, diet pills and Program Director or packaged foods. The Slender Fit U program also helps clients to modify their relationship with food and eating habits, resulting in an easily maintained, long-term weight loss. Owner and Program Director Geri Kelleher, often referred to as the “HCG Guru,” truly understands the benefits of the program and works closely with her clients to help them receive maximize results. Ten years ago she lost 25 lbs. on this program and it changed her life forever. Soon after, she started helping others achieve their own weight loss goals and opened her Davie clinic in 2010.

ance and support throughout the program and achieves their weight loss goals. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest dosage available for weight loss. We also give injectable prescription B12.

Is the diet easy? To quote one of my clients,

“Besides being the most effective diet I have ever gone on, this was the easiest diet I have ever been on. Almost every morning when I got on the scale, my weight would be down. No long workouts, no agonizing hunger pains. That’s how great this diet is.”

How much can clients expect to lose?

Clients can choose a 23-day program or a 46-day program. Women typically lose 15 lbs. in the 23-day program and up to 30 lbs. in the 46-day program. Men typically lose more - 20 to 25 lbs. in 23 days and 40 to 50 lbs. in 46 days.

Do clients keep the weight off? Ninety per-

cent of Slender Fit U clients keep the weight off. After completing the program successfully, they support and rebalance their metabolisms. In addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat, they modify their relationship with food and eating, resulting in easily maintained, long-term weight loss.

medical doctor before starting the program, as well as one-on-one counseling throughout the program. This is included in the price.

Does the diet involve exercise? Exercise is

not required and does not improve your end result. It is a scientific program and it is the combination of the HCG and the low calorie diet that produces the weight/fat loss. However, exercise is allowed.

What is HCG? HCG (Human Chronic

Gonadotropin) is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists in men and women. During pregnancy, it is produced in very high levels and almost completely controls the metabolic function. In non-pregnant individuals, research suggests HCG similarly increases the metabolism.

Does the HCG have side effects? There are

no side effects reported while using HCG for weight loss. The amount of HCG used in the diet protocol is a very tiny dose. Because it is a natural substance, this program is completely safe.

What foods are on the diet? There are no

packaged meals. You are eating real food from the grocery store that includes proteins, fruit and vegetables. This makes for an easy transition onto stabilization and then back to regular life.

Are clients hungry on the diet? Most people experience

Rosa has also recommended the program to many family members and friends.

appy New Year! With each New Year, we have the opportunity to start fresh, look at life differently, and begin new paths in life. This year, I would like us all to focus on Kindness and Compassion throughout the City of Pembroke Pines. The City Commission recently approved a resolution that supports the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) Kindness Initiative, which advocates adopting a culture of kindness in communities, building up the social infrastructure, and making cities resilient, happier and healthier. This initiative is the result of a meeting last year between the Dalai Lama and the USCM, where they discussed the “One Hundred Billion Acts of Kindness Across America Initiative,” a policy that embraces compassion and kindness, a virtue that seeks to serve and help others through selfless acts and asks nothing in return. Various cities throughout the country have embraced this belief and put kindness as their core value, challenging residents, visitors and businesses to model kindness in their interactions with one another. I’ve always said and believe Pembroke Pines is one of the greatest cities in our country, so I wasn’t surprised when our Commission immediately agreed

Expect a Moderate Housing Market in South Florida in 2017

W

ith South Florida’s housing market in the midst of a shift, it continued to sluggishly linger on towards the latter part of 2016. Interest rates increased slightly towards the end of the year, while home prices continued to appreciate just above the historical average of 5%. So, what trends can we expect with the housing market in 2017? Most recently, the Realtor.com 2017 national housing forecast placed South Florida among the slowest-growing of the Top 100 metro areas. It ranked South Florida as No. 71 with a sales volume increase of 4.17% and a price increase of 3.98%. I am guessing that home values will continue to appreciate at or slightly above the historical average, while interest rates are expected to continue its recent upward movement. Both of these variables will most certainly continue affect potential homebuyers in 2017, resulting in home sales experiencing moderate growth. South Florida’s housing inventory will remain a key challenge, as homeowners continue to “stay put” due to affordability issues. I expect sellers to remain unrealistic through the first quarter of the year, not realizing that the market, not the seller, determines the fair market value of a home. With 10,000 baby boomers across America retiring on a daily basis and more millennials reaching their prime home buying age, housing experts expect a first time homebuyer purchase-oriented market and are optimistic that these millennials will be enough to keep the housing momentum going in 2017. What I can certainly predict with the South Florida real estate market is that there is no “bust” in sight. All the variables point to a cooling off of the once red hot seller’s market - a much needed ingredient for sustaining a healthy market. Interest rates are still low hovering around the mid 4%. We have tremendous corporate growth and low unemployment. South Florida is an international destination for vacationers, attracting home and condo purchaser from all over the world. It still remains the “melting pot” for international and second home buyers. Lastly, don’t forget that we’re the Sunshine state. Our weather is second to none and extremely attractive to millennials entering the first time home buyer market and to the millions of baby boomers entering their retirement years! I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the residents of Miramar and Pembroke Pines for their continued support in 2016 and, more importantly, throughout the last decade and a half that the Simmsational Real Estate Group has served the residents of Southwest Broward County. As a consequence of Southwest Broward’s unremitting confidence in our professionalism and knowledge of the real estate market, we respectfully continue to achieve outstanding results beyond expectations (over 80 homes sold in 2016)! As the Team Leader/Managing Director, I am surrounded by a core group of knowledgeable and experienced real estate professionals daily. This is an achievement that started as a “dream” just a little over 15 years ago. With continued assurance in our ability to fully accomplish your real estate goals, we look forward to serving the residents of Miramar and Pembroke Pines in 2017 and beyond! LEGALLY SPEAKING

Hiring an Attorney? BY MAYLEIDYS PORRASPITA, ESQUIRE

Y

ou suffer a work injury and in addition to the physical pain and the financial worry you are now also faced with a denial of all or part of the benefits to which you are entitled. Annoyed, worried and in disbelief that this is happening after all your years of being a great employee, you begin the daunting search of finding an attorney. The search seems overwhelming. Where do you start? Who do you hire? Although there are many factors to consider when hiring an attorney, the following are three of the most important. Above all else you want to hire an attorney that is experienced and proficient in the particular field of law. Although there can be many competent lawyers, only an experienced Workers’ Compensation attorney can provide the knowledge needed in such a specialized area of law. Finding an attorney knowledgeable with work accidents may be time consuming, yet the outcome is well worth the search. The best place to start is based on a referral from family, friends or co-workers previously represented in a work injury. If you don’t know anyone who can refer you to an attorney, search for publications in your area where attorneys write blogs or articles on the topic. The second most important factor, second only to experience, is accessibility. You want to be able to reach your attorney with questions and concerns without being passed to a staff member. Finding the attorney through a referral is most effective. If the attorney you choose is not from a referral, ensure to ask the attorney about contacting him/her directly during the initial consultation. Attorneys who hold contact with their client an important part of their practice will often provide clients their cell phone numbers and have a good return call policy. Third, you want to ensure that your are very clear regarding fees and costs. Workers’ Compensation attorneys mostly work on a contingency basis. This means that they will take your case and charge you a fee, if and only if they prevail on your case. However, costs are always owed to an attorney even in a contingency basis so it is important to know what those costs will be. Additionally, you want to be aware and have in writing what percentage the attorney will charge at the conclusion of your case. An honest attorney will disclose during the initial consultation and the in the retainer agreement all that will be charged during the representation. Although there is no requirement to be represented by an attorney during a Worker’s Compensation claim, an unrepresented Claimant is often trying to fight the Employer and the insurance carrier who will undoubtedly have an attorney well versed in Worker’s Compensation. When your benefits are denied and often times even before then, you can contact an attorney to ensure that all your rights are preserved keeping in mind the important factors of representation. If you or a loved one has been injured at work, feel free to contact our office for a free consultation. The Law Offices of Mayleidys Porraspita, P.A. are located in Pembroke Pines. If you have any questions regarding the matter discussed in the article above or any other Worker’s Compensation question or concern please call our office at 800492-5455. HABLAMOS ESPANOL.

T

he future of plastic surgery lies in stem cell science and optimization of fat grafting for soft tissue augmentation. For years, patients focused on eliminating fat. Today, fat (or adipose) cells are utilized for restoration of soft tissue volume loss that occurs with aging. Recent advancements in stem cell isolation have led to the application of stem cell enriched fat grafts. A fat transfer involves harvesting a patient’s own fat cells through a lipo-aspiration procedure, then separating the fat cells from the accompanying serum into a pure fat cell graft for transfer to the face, body, or breasts to restore soft tissue volume. Research has shown that when fat cells are enriched with stem cells to form culture expanded adipose desired stem cells (ASC), there is a higher quantity and quality of newly formed adipose and connective tissue. With this technique, the amount of fat which survives after a lipofi lling procedure improves to 80 – 90% with more predictable and long lasting results. Fat cells survive in the range of 50 – 75% with present techniques requiring over correction of the soft tissue defect to ensure proper enhancement. The term stem cell, when used in advertisements for facelifts and hair transplants, is not applicable because stem cells haven’t been isolated clinically for these procedures. Using the term “stem Before After cell facelifts” is an attempt by the advertiser to mislead patients into thinking they are receiving a new cutting edge procedure. Scientifically, fat cells do contain immature stem cells as well as platelet rich plasma, which have a higher portion of stem cells than plasma alone. When fat is injected into the face, theoretically a small concentration of stem cells may be present in the newly grafted fat. For buttock enhancement, autologous fat transfer procedure has become the procedure of choice to improve size, shape, and lifting of the buttocks. In recent years, fat grafts have been used in breast reconstruction procedures, both for post-mastectomy reconstruction and post breast augmentation contour irregularities. Autologous fat grafting procedures are being utilized for primary breast augmentation more often for women who desire a small increase in breast size and fullness. The technique is still being studied to determine its long-term effects, including issues with mammography and subsequent breast cancer detection. The techniques for maximizing results in fat transfer have evolved over the past several years. With ongoing research and clinical application, fat will be used universally for soft tissue augmentation and become the gold standard for such procedures. LEGALLY SPEAKING

Are You Ready?

The Promises We Keep BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE

We all make promises, be they solemn (“till death do us part”) or playful (“there are no monsters under the bed.”) Many promises define our character and reinforce our relationships with those we love. As a new year approaches, promises traditionally take the form of resolutions. Perhaps your 2017 resolutions include adding regular exercise to your daily routine, or eating a diet that contains more fruits and vegetables. This year, why not add to your list of resolutions the promise of protecting those you love? Consider the following: ▸ Who will take care of me if I can’t take care of myself? Do I have adequate insurance? Is there a clear successor to manage my financial and business affairs? Are my personal wishes set forth in writing so they are known and accessible when needed? ▸ After I am gone, how will my family and loved ones manage the debts, taxes, and other legal obligations I leave behind? Have I laid out a way forward to reach important family and financial goals? ▸ Who will take over my business if I am disabled or gone? What can I do to increase the probability that my business will survive after me? ▸ Who will care for my young children if my spouse and I cannot? What financial protection and instructions have I left for their care? ▸ When and how will my spouse, children and other loved ones receive their inheritance? How can I be sure they receive their gifts in a manner which maximizes use and enjoyment and protects against creditors and predators? Thinking about these matters is daunting. But because we care about our families we are obligated to raise the questions and explore the answers. As spouses, we want to provide the resources and safeguards to make our loved ones’ futures more secure. As parents, we want our children to have a happy and secure life, especially if that life does not include us. Why not resolve to start the process of caring for your family should something happen to you? The first step is to meet with a qualified estate planning attorney to design and put into place a plan which will ensure that these are promises you can keep. If you have already done your estate planning, good for you! You should also make a habit of reviewing your plan, including beneficiary designations for insurance policies, retirement accounts and 401(k) plans. Changes in your financial situation, family circumstances, and the law all conspire to make the review, revision, and updating of your estate plan essential. Estate planning is a deliberate, premeditated act of love. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M. in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the area of estate planning and probate and trust administration for over 30 years. The Relocation Issue BY EVAN BARON

R

elocation involves a parent who wishes to move out of this jurisdiction with his/ her minor children. This issue can surface during a divorce or after a divorce has been finalized. The fact that many of the residents of South Florida are originally from another location adds to their desire to move “back home,” where they may have emotional and perhaps financial support. Sometimes a family relocates to South Florida due to a job transfer or a better career opportunity. It may require the couple to move away from the comfort of their home and the security of their family. The problems that a desire to relocate creates cannot usually be resolved by a simple agreement. As an example, mom wants to move back to New Jersey with the parties’ two minor children. They are either in the midst of a divorce or the divorce has already occurred. Dad is choosing to stay in South Florida and has no desire or intention to move back north. Can mom move? Can dad stop her? The answer to each of these questions is “perhaps.” The law in Florida allows a parent and the minor children to relocate a maximum of 50 miles from the address where they reside. This of course can

cause problems as well. If both parents are involved in the children’s lives, a move of 50 miles can drastically change a time sharing schedule. A relocation of even 10 miles can affect a child’s school district. A change of 50 miles will require, more often than not, a modification of the time sharing schedule. Midweek dinners or morning drives to school with the parent remaining in the area will become impossible. This is especially true if the parents are following a 50/50 time sharing schedule. If a move of just a few miles can alter a time sharing plan, imagine how a relocation of hundreds of miles will affect the status quo. The law does, however, allow for relocation under certain circumstances. The court must weigh the benefit to the minor children against the effect it will have on the parent/ child relationship. It’s true that the relocating parent may experience better financial circumstances if allowed to move, but how will the parent/child relationship suffer as a result? There are generally no easy answers. The most important thing to remember is that a parent cannot relocate with a minor child beyond 50 miles without a court order or agreement of the other parent. In reality, even a 50 mile change will usually require a modification to be fi led, as long as it affects the current time sharing schedule. The parent seeking to relocate must fi le a petition and fully inform the other parent of his/her intentions; including address of new residence, purpose in moving and a proposed time sharing schedule. Family court judges will often express the fact that these types of cases are the most difficult to decide. If you are faced with a possible relocation issue, I suggest you contact my office and schedule a free consultation. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

ASK THE EXPERT

BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA

T

he arch of a person’s foot is the main supporting structure of the body. It is composed of bones that are connected by ligaments. If the ligaments are strong, the integrity of the arch remains intact. Ligaments that are loose or weak allow the arch to flatten. When this occurs, muscles try ineffectively to hold up the arch. Pain in the foot, legs, ankle and back often develops. Causes: Flat feet include loose ligaments in the arch. Trauma to tendons or bone abnormalities can cause the foot to flatten. Tight calf muscles can severely aggravate the condition. Arthritis in the foot or ankle (either rheumatoid or psoriatic) can be a predisposing factor in flatfeet. Symptoms: Pain usually in the arch, ankles and legs aggravated by standing and walking is a symptom of flatfeet. Premature fatigue during any type of activity frequently occurs. Cramping in the legs, especially at night is common. In children, a general lack of interest in participating in sports may indicate flatfeet. Signs: A flat arch when standing or the foot excessively points to the outside especially during gait is often a sign of flatfeet. Bulging of the bones on the inside of the ankle and foot are usually seen. Flatfeet is usually associated with knock-knees and abnormal shoe wear. Related Problems: Back and knee problems are seen, especially in children and men. Hammertoes, heel spurs and bunions are often associated with flatfeet as a person ages. Inactivity, which can cause weight gain and poor cardiovascular fitness, may also occur. Arthritis in the foot, ankle, knees, hips and back is common with aging. Treatment: Identifying the area of pain and underlying cause as early as possible is key. Proper shoe gear and custom molded orthotics to support the foot and the entire extremity may be recommended. Physical therapy to improve flexibility, strength, balance and coordination is often prescribed. Stretching of the calf muscles in a cast to diminish excessive strain on the arch and improve flexibility is another treatment method. Surgery to correct the deformity and return the child or adult to full function may be necessary in some cases. Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. BRIGHT STEPS FORWARD Founded in 2005 to help families in need, Bright Steps Forward, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization with the mission to ensure that ALL children in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties with neurological or developmental disorders have access to top quality special needs education and therapeutic interventions so they may achieve their maximum potential. Bright Steps Forward operates a fully accredited therapeutic learning center for children with special needs that serves children from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Unlike public school classrooms, the class sizes in our learning centers are small and children are grouped according to their needs. Bright Steps Forward’s academic program follows the Sunshine State Standards and we include other programs to enrich the curriculum. What sets our therapeutic learning centers apart from other special needs programs is our ability to provide intensive ABA, PT, OT and speech therapies during or after the tutoring sessions so that each child can blossom socially, physically as well as cognitively.
