Take Stock in What is Important this New Year BY CHRISTY & TERRY JAILLET
I
n 1961 President John F. Kennedy delivered a speech before the Canadian Parliament in which he uttered the famous line, “What unites us is greater than what divides us!” With today’s political rhetoric and constant conflict on social media, perhaps those words have never rang truer. No matter what side of the spectrum you fall, we can all take great pride in knowing that together we can overcome anything – just think back to the dark days following 9-11. The New Year is a time for us to take stock in our place in the world and recognize that we truly are in this together. People are more reliant on one another today than at any time in history. The food we eat comes from all over the world. And, while we are globally connected through the internet, your iPhone or laptop was designed in California and assembled in China with a microprocessor fabricated in Korea made from materials mined in Australia and Africa. The magazine you are reading right now was printed in Jacksonville with ink from Japan on paper made from Canadian wood. The words, articles and ads, however, all come from the tireless efforts of our team right here in South Florida! Our ability to live, cooperate and work together, even with those we don’t agree with, has made our lives inarguably better. We think this willingness to focus on common goals is what has made America so successful over the past 200 years. So, as we enter into 2020 and the upcoming Presidential Election, let’s remember President Kennedy’s words, seeking the good in people and looking for the common ground that unites us all as Americans.
Happy New Year!

How does the leasing center provide prospective residents with a sneak peek at what to expect? There are two fully furnished one- and two-bedroom models to show someone what an actual residence will include. Each features a kitchen with granite countertops and stainless-steel appliance package, California-style custom closets and luxurious bathrooms. Visitors are able to actually walk out onto the balcony and see the panoramic view they would have from the apartment. In addition, there is a mini theater where visitors can enjoy presentations while sampling delicious catering provided by the talented Palace chefs. The information center makes use of the latest in technology to relate to customers and provide the community’s story with flat-screen TVs and personal iPads and apps offering video tours and 360-degree tours of public areas and residences. The apartments sound beautiful, but what else will The Palace at Weston offer residents? Ritz Carltonstyle amenities and services are trademarks of The Palace Group and include an elegant dining room, state-of-the-art fitness center, piano bar, theater, library and computer center. A monthly fee includes entertainment and social activities, gourmet dining and wine, security, maintenance, transportation, housekeeping, and utilities, including high speed internet, cable TV and satellite TV. Please tell us more about the exciting entertainment options. Each day is like living aboard a luxurious cruise ship. Many senior communities offer happy hours once a week; our communities offer happy hours every night with live entertainment. But
that’s only happy hour. There are activities that take place every day, morning into night, planned by a full-time activity department. We want people to have a wealth of choices and new experiences, from belly dancing to learning to play the piano to adult education classes with University of Miami OSHER. People want to enjoy high-end amenities and want to be challenged mentally and physically.
Will families be welcome to visit residents at The Palace at Weston? We want families to enjoy being with their loved ones and be a place where the grandkids want to visit. Each month “Family and Friends” theme parties and events are planned with great live entertainment, fabulous food and beverages, mementoes and pictures, and so much more at no additional charge. Holiday celebrations take place too and it’s not unusual for families to bring ten or more people to an event. Making memories and sharing family togetherness is so important and it truly separates The Palace from competitors. What else distinguishes The Palace? We bring nearly 40 years of senior living experience to what we do. Jacob and

Climb Aboard the New G
etting to and from Miami is about to get easier and faster thanks to the new 75 Express Bus. It provides direct service from the park and ride lots at the BB&T Center in Sunrise and Miami Gardens Drive (@ I-75) to the Miami Airport Station, where you can transfer to local rail or bus to destinations throughout MiamiDade County. The new premium bus service begins on January 13th and for the first five days, all riders ride free.
The 75 Express Bus is funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and operated by Broward County Transit. It builds upon the success of the 95 Express Bus and 595 Express Bus services, which continually receive rave reviews. Riders who use those bus services rate them satisfactory or above satisfactory. “Express buses have proven to be very successful in South Florida which says a lot about the type of service they provide because typically we are looked at as a location where people love their cars,” states South Florida Commuter Services Director Jeremy Mullings. Fast, Comfortable, Convenient The Express Buses are used primarily by riders who own their own cars, but welcome the convenience, comfort and cost savings of commuting in the coach-style buses. One-way fares on the 75 Express Bus are available for as little as $1.30 and monthly passes cost less than $100. The 75 Express Bus will offer free Wi-Fi, air-conditioned comfort, comfortable seating and will travel in the express lanes for faster more reliable travel times. Service will be provided every 30 minutes during the peak morning and afternoon commute times. Commuters can take comfort in knowing that life’s little emergencies are not an issue
thanks to FDOT’s Guaranteed Ride Home program. This government-funded program will cover the cost of Lyft or taxi rides home if the Express Bus is unavailable and you need to leave work early for an emergency or have to stay late for unscheduled overtime. A Better Way to Commute This new, premium transit service is designed to get commuters from western Broward County to their places of employment in Miami-Dade

County quickly and reliably. Morning service begins as early as 5:40 am with continual buses running until 9:40 am. The afternoon commute begins at 3:45 pm, with the last bus leaving the Miami Airport Station at 7:20 pm and scheduled to arrive at the BB&T Center by 8:24 pm. Broward County Transit Senior Planner Tara Crawford says, “The 75 Express Bus gives you a comfortable, stress-free and easy connection to the Miami International Airport via
the Miami Airport Station, with connections to the Civic Center and Downtown Miami/Brickell.” Transfers via Miami Dade Transit buses and Metro Rail trains make it easy to get around the Miami metro area. The Express Bus system is a core component of the express lanes along I-75, I-595, and I-95. The express lanes are multi-modal facilities designed to reduce traffic congestion and promote choices in how and when residents commute.
75 EXPRESS BUS
Starting Instead of paying a toll, or relatively higher tolls (typically during high-traffic times), 75 Express Bus riders can now enjoy the time-saving benefits of the express lanes at no additional cost. Free Service The 75 Express Bus will be free for all riders during
its first week of service, from January 13th to January 17th. Simply show up at the BB&T Center or Miami Gardens park and ride lot and hop on the Express Bus free of charge. For additional opportunities to ride for free after the trial period has ended, go to www.TryTransitFree.com.

Spread Kindness Like Confetti! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
F
our years ago, the 14th Dali Lama of Tibetan Buddhism, Entrepreneur and Billionaire Philanthropist Philip Anschutz, and musical icon Lady Gaga took the stage during the 2016 United States Conference of Mayors to discuss how kindness is critical when addressing the many social issues facing communities across America. The combination of these three powerful individuals resulted in a notion for mayors to create a “culture of kindness” in their respective cities. After hearing the challenge, Mayor Frank C. Ortis presented the idea to the City of Pembroke Pines, and in partnership with Broward County Public Schools created an event that the community has come to know and love. “The Kindness Initiative” is going three years strong now and has prompted citizens ages 1 to 100 to take part and take “initiative” into becoming a city that promotes caring and sincerity for generations to come. Over 1,500 people attended the first Pembroke Pines “Kindness Initiative” at William B. Armstrong Dream Park where Mayor Ortis and Dr. Bob Runcie, Broward County School Board Superintendent, challenged leaders in every Broward County City to embrace the initiative by organizing events to promote awareness for Kindness, Compassion, and
Forgiveness. As the event unfolded, people appeared to embrace the message of the day, as they participated in awareness building activities. Ortis and Runcie reminded people of all ages to serve as role models, practice patience and tolerance, and create a culture of kindness in their lives to have a positive impact on those around them. “Everyone has the power to be kind, to forgive and be compassionate. Imagine our communities if everyone embraced this message,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis Each year as the event grows, so does the crowd, and so does the space. “The 2020 Kindness Initiative” will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at CB Smith Park located at 900 N. Flamingo Road, Shelter 19. Highlights of the annual event are a “Community Peace Meal Picnic” where families and friends can decorate their picnic area with peace-filled symbols, musical entertainment by local talent and children, random acts of kindness, and plenty of kindness activities.
“As Mayor of the great City of Pembroke Pines, I would like to invite everyone to join me at the third annual Kindness Initiative Event. I encourage everyone to pack a picnic basket and bring a blanket or chairs and enjoy an afternoon filled with random acts of kindness, storytelling, musical performances and many ways to find peace. We can never have enough Kindness, forgiveness and Compassion,” exclaimed Mayor Frank. C. Ortis. For information about the Pembroke Pines Kindness Day Event, please call the City of Pembroke Pines Special Events office at 954392-2116 or visit www.ppines.com/special events.

SCHOOL NEWS
Wanted: Lessons That Are Fun BY BEVERLY PERKINS
J
ust before the holidays, fourth-grade students from the City of Pembroke Pines Charter East Campus participated in a fun lesson as part of the Kids and The Power of Work (KAPOW) program. The unique collaboration between the school district, generous local businesses partners, dedicated volunteers, and eager South Florida schools introduce and expose students to career awareness through professionally designed lessons taught by volunteers in the classroom and on work sites. “The KAPOW program bridges the gap between what students learn at school and how it applies to the real world of work. The program exposes students to various careers they never knew existed and
allows them to have practical goals for the future. Our volunteers connect with kids by sharing their pathway to success and becomes a valuable mentor in the classroom,” explained Tania Reynolds, KAPOW Program Director. Students from Ms. Mercedes Becerra’s class had the opportunity to learn from KAPOW volunteer and Wells Fargo Manager Juana Pecoraro. The lesson entitled “My Perfect Job” built upon the previous lesson about what work is and what skills one must acquire in a chosen field. This time they were asked what they wanted to be when they grow up, what their dream job would be, and how they would accomplish being successful in that career choice. “Students interviewed each other on what things they like to do as well as things that they do well, things people need and want, and what their perfect job would be based on their explanations. Once all students shared and completed the handout, I explained that they would be placed into groups to create a business based on what the individuals within the groups enjoy doing and what their common interests were,” stated Becerra. The lesson cumulated with the eager students creating their very own “Help Wanted” advertisement. It even expanded into what educational level and experience was needed as well as pay. They began
designing their ads on computers with all their information plus graphics. “I absolutely love being a part of KAPOW! I believe that all children should be able to dream about their future and all the possibilities that they can gain in their lives. I think that if we spread more awareness about how school is essential and just a stepping stone to real-world, then students will be more vested in their learning, not just with reading, mathematics, science, etc, either, but with work ethic, compassion, teamwork, and communication. The students in my class love working on the KAPOW activities and teacher created projects, and its relevance to the real world,” added Becerra. KAPOW is always looking for a business or individual volunteers, as well as schools interested in participating in the program. For more information about volunteering or how your school can participate, email KAPOW Program Director Tania Reynolds at taniakapow@gmail.com or call 305-338-5548.

HOME & DESIGN
The Magic Carpet BY NEVINE GROULX, ETHNICA DESIGN
W
e’re always interested in easy ways to rev up living room decor. If you can only add one item to make a big impact in your space, an area carpet is an excellent choice. The right living room rug can pull all your accent colors together, add pattern to a neutral color palette, or soften hard edges in a contemporary room. When choosing your rug look towards other elements of your design scheme such as color which will help reinforce and create a more cohesive feel and look to your room. If you want to be brave and use a pattern there is no better way than introducing it through a rug. Using pattern below your visual field when entering a room makes it appear less intrusive. Don’t assume that a rug has to be rectangular either; Let the way you group your furniture dictate the shape of your rug. Try figuring out which shape should look best and go with a square, round, or oval shape if that seems to complement your furniture arrangement better than a rectangular one. Also, remember your rug size should be based on the dimensions of your room, not your coffee table.
When you buy a room rug, subtract 3-feet from the length and width of the room. Leaving the floor bare at the edges makes the room look a little larger. There are three areas you need to concentrate your attention on: • Pathways: They can have the tendency to be dead and unwelcoming spaces, so what better way to liven them up than with a runner carpet. One of the reasons you may want to consider a rug in your hallway is that they can create a visual pathway that draws the eyes to any connecting rooms which means you can have fun and introduce pattern and color with your chosen rug. • Connecting Rooms: By placing similar style/colored rugs in connecting spaces, you unify and create a visual connection between the two rooms. This, in turn, makes each room flow from one to the next. • Art: As well as dressing your floors with that perfect rug, rugs have become works of art since they can hang on the walls too. Decorative rugs not only provide texture they can double up as artwork. If you are fortunate enough to have high ceilings, then
hanging a rug is not only a cost-effective way to adorn your walls it’s a great way to create a feature wall and/or make a statement. A rug can anchor a room, define it, add warmth, and help layer a room’s decor. They act as artwork for the floor as they create a frame in which to place furniture and define spaces. Adding the right carpet to any room adds an element of magic to any room. Nevine Groulx for Ethnica Designs has been designing interiors for 15 years. Impingement Syndromes in Dancers BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA
P
ain in the front or back of the ankle can occur from a dancer standing “en point” or “demi point”. Pain behind the ankle is due to a bone prominence that pinches the soft tissue or due to a fractured bone or cartilage in the back of the ankle (Os Trigonum). A deep pain in the back of the ankle is felt and is made worse if the foot points down. Treatment includes rest, physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medication. If the pain does not improve, a Cortisone injection is given to decrease inflammation and scar tissue. Unresolved pain may be treated surgically, thus allowing a full return to dance. The back of the ankle is cleaned out and a small piece of bone may be removed with arthroscopic surgery to allow the dancer to return to full activity. Rarely is an open procedure needed.
Pain in the front of the ankle is usually caused by thickening of the ankle joint lining which can cause pain while moving the leg forward on the foot. This impingement syndrome is usually associated with an ankle ligament injury and can become very painful, especially the first thing in the morning when getting out of bed to walk or after sitting for a short period of time and getting up to walk. The inflammation and soreness usually lessen with activity but return later on in the day. Physical therapy and a short course of antiinflammatory medication may be necessary to reduce the inflammation in the ankle joint. If that does not improve, a Fluoroscopic Guided Cortisone injection may be necessary to reduce the thickening of the soft tissue. If conservative measures fail, a Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection can be given into the joint to improve healing potential. In some cases, the impingement in the front part of the ankle does not improve and arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to completely regain ankle
mobility without discomfort. In other cases, a small spur is present on the front part of the lower leg bone. This can cause chronic pain and stiffness in the ankle. If present, arthroscopic removal of the bone spur is also performed to allow the dancer to resume activity. Prognosis is excellent with a full return to dancing with proper treatment. Carlo A. PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
W
hen considering sending your child to a private school, it is vital to take into account various factors, especially if you have to pay a pretty penny to attend. In this day and age, it is evident that academics are getting more rigorous, standardized tests are increasingly difficult, and the pressure of college is no joke. Colleges today want a well-rounded, educated, unique students, so it is key to find a private school that will enable your child to embody these qualities. Find a school with good extracurriculars The first factor to consider should be the size of the school. It will be harder for your child to stand out in a very large class. Most colleges compare students against their class, not other schools, so this factor is very important. It will be easier for your child to stand out in a small pond than in a large sea of students. Additionally, you should ensure that there are ample extracurriculars at your selected private school that appeal to your child. Having good extracurriculars and sports teams should be a deciding factor when selecting a private school. Colleges often look to recruit athletes from wellknown private schools. A wide variety of extracurriculars gives your child the option to be involved in an organization that actually interest them. Colleges want ambitious students, so leadership positions in clubs and organizations are crucial to your child’s success. Prioritizes academics and education Another factor to consider would be the passing rates of Advanced Placement (AP) and Cambridge’s Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) exams. High passing rates indicate that the educators at the school

Passing an exam often allows the student to receive college credit, so

they won’t have to retake that course in college. Not only do high passing rates increase the likelihood of your child receiving college credit, but it implies that your child is more likely to do better in the course throughout the year as well. Academics that are challenging, high passing rates on ap exams Apart from just the passing rate itself, parents should also pay attention to score distributions. The highest possible AP score is a 5, and the lowest passing score is a 3. A school may have a high passing rate, but it is important to know the proportion of students receiving 4’s and 5’s, not just 3’s. Different scores may earn a student different credits at certain colleges. Although it is important for passing rates to be high, the environment of the school will also contribute to your child’s success. School should be a place where students should feel comfortable, safe, and welcomed. It is now more important than ever that your child feels safe at school, but as a parent, you should be certain that you feel comfortable just the same as you send your child off to that school every weekday.
Guidance counselors that care about your child’s future Most importantly, students should feel comfortable reaching out to guidance counselors and advisors. Having supportive guidance counselors and understanding teachers can truly have a positive impact on your child’s high school experience. Counselors should be available to aid with schedules, college applications, college essays, and even personal issues. Good college advisors and counselors are imperative to making the college application process as seamless as possible. It is important to make sure that guidance counselors and college advisors are accessible to students at all times. Overall, there are many factors to consider when selecting the right private school for your child. The importance of these factors may vary depending on your child’s interests and priorities. Although this information may seem overwhelming, it should be helpful in narrowing down which school is the best fit for your child. With such amazing options in the area, no matter where your child ends up, they will be receiving an amazing education.

ould you run your beloved car low on oil, coolant, or transmission fluid? Obviously not! Then, why are you engaging in an amateur or professional sport without checking under your hood for hormones, micronutrients, and cellular nutrition levels? If you are neglecting this, as opposed to your car, you will experience physical pain, emotional performance frustration and in the worst-case scenario physical injury. Accomplishing any athletic goal or remaining at the top (especially after age 40) requires a unique competitive advantage. The role of micronutrients and hormones is often overlooked but they are essential to give your cells a quantum leap forward to improve athletic focus, strength, endurance, and recovery – the hallmarks of an exceptional athlete! Our team at Bellissimo Medical specializes in functional medicine with an emphasis in Bio-identical hormones replacement therapy, high-quality medical-grade supplements as well as specialized tests to measure levels of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, metabolism, metabolites, antioxidant function, and immune response. Aside from the obvious and well-known vitamins B, D, E, C, etc., there are other crucial examples of sports nutrition elements essential for optimal performance. Asparagine: Increases the capacity of muscle to use fatty acids and spare glycogen, thus increasing time to physical exhaustion. Serine: Increases aerobic capacity and keeps a healthy hormone profile by buffering post-workout cortisol levels, which can cause excess muscle breakdown. Magnesium: Is key to the production of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) which is the body’s main storage form of energy. This element improves aerobic performance, muscle strength, and repair. Zinc: Interacts with hormones to improve body composition and strength. Deficiency impairs peak oxygen uptake during exercise (Supplementation should be accompanied by copper). All sports activities should be complemented by optimal nutrition to spark and enable optimal performance, avoid injury and conquer your set goals. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954.384.8989. Some Things to Consider
It is difficult to try and sit down and write an article this month without thinking about the events in Newtown Connecticut that occurred on December 14th. There has been much discussed about gun control and mental health issues and hopefully, by the time this article is released, there will be some progress in these areas. As a family law attorney, one of the issues which somewhat jumped out at me was the fact that the shooters’ parents were divorced. It seems that in many instances when a young adult goes on a rampage like this, he/she comes from a broken home. I certainly am not suggesting that children of divorced households are more likely to be involved in this type of behavior, but I do think that continuing issues between the parents does lead to a greater likelihood that a child can suffer from some emotional problems. Please understand, I am not a psychologist and I am not suggesting that I am qualified to make any diagnosis, but approximately 30 years of practicing family law has allowed me to make several observations. From what I read the shooter in Newtown lived with his mother and had no contact with his father for years. Perhaps that scenario had nothing to do with his mental state, but it certainly did not suggest a loving relationship. It is important that parents going through a divorce always remember how their actions will affect their children. Unfortunately, all too often parents focus on getting even with their spouse and forget that the children are “in the middle” of the conflict. It is important for a child to know that they can rely on both parents for love and support. All too often this is not the case. Children are not to be used as “pawns” in a divorce. The law in Florida is very clear in that a parent who may be behind in the payment of child support cannot be deprived of time with his/her child(ren). In addition, child support cannot be withheld because a parent is preventing the other parent from exercising his/her time sharing. In spite of the possible financial issues which may be in controversy, time with each parent is essential. It is no longer uncommon for each parent to have equal time with a child. Unfortunately, often parents resist what is best for a child due to possible financial consequences. In Florida, one of the factors which affect child support is the number of overnight visits each parent may have. Instead of focusing on what is best for the child, it becomes an issue of how much will I pay or how much will I receive? Unfortunately, sometimes parents continue this battle long after the Final Judgment has been entered. Post-judgment battles concerning the children can be just as damaging. I strongly urge parents to provide counseling for their children. Even the most “peaceful divorce” has an effect on the children. Just remember, a divorce isn’t only about you! n The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

Are You a Candidate for Eyelid Rejuvenation? BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. he eyes are the first thing we notice when we meet someone. Beautiful eyes can make up for other features that are less than ideal. Likewise, eyes that are tired, droopy, or puffy may not reflect a vibrant inner self. It is often said that the earliest signs of aging are around the eyes. Perhaps people are always questioning whether or not you had a good night’s sleep because your eyes are swollen with bags. Fortunately, at the Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center, we can give you dramatically younger looking eyes through “eyelid lifts”, also known as blepharoplasty. A primary reason for droopy eyes is simply due to age. It can also be hereditary. As everything droops, so do the eyebrows. As the outer part of the eyebrows droop, the skin of the upper eyelids will look saggy, as if you had developed extra skin that was not there several years before. Removing this “extra” skin can drastically improve that droopy look. Another reason for “tired eyes” is because of droopy or migrating eyelid fat. This fat is held back by a thin wall of fibrous tissue called the orbital septum, which weakens over time. The fat, held firmly back by this wall in youth can bulge with age, giving you “baggy” upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty removes this extra fat and tightens the wall, restoring a youthful contour. For those patients with puffiness under the eyes or baggy upper and lower eyelids, laser eyelid surgery can reduce and often eliminate these problems. The end results are a more alert and youthful look around the eyes. The prominent fat pockets can be removed from a hidden incision along the inside surface of the eyelid. This “no stitch”, no external scar technique is utilized when patients have fat prominence of “eyelid bags” alone without excess or sagging eyelid skin. If minimal excess skin is present, a skin pinch technique is combined with transconjunctival fat removal. In this case, a “pinch” of lower eyelid skin is removed. These techniques typically result in less swelling, less discomfort, and shorter recovery time. I will assess which technique is ideal for your eyes during your personal consultation. Recovery from eyelid surgery usually takes seven to ten days. Sunglasses allow you to go out in public immediately after surgery, and make-up can be worn within about one week. Normal activity can be resumed within a few days, and exercise can be resumed within 14 days after surgery. If the eyes looking back at you in the mirror are not reflecting how you are feeling, it might be time to consider a blepharoplasty.

What is a Revocable Living Trust? BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE ong gone are the days when trusts were only for the rich and famous. Why? Because creating a revocable living trust is less about estate tax and more about avoiding unnecessary costs of probate and asset transfer, and creating protections for your loved ones. A properly drafted and funded trust can also deliver an inheritance with a valuable creditor and predator protection. The following scenarios may help understand the benefits of a trust and why including one in your estate plan is worth considering: Meet our hypothetical family, George and Jenny, happily married for 25 years with three children, Jessica, age 20, Josh, age 15, and Jonathan, age 12. Both George and Jenny have created wills, leaving everything to each other. After they are both gone, their wills leave it all to their children. Sounds like a logical estate plan? Maybe not. Tragically, George dies suddenly and, according to his will, all of his property transfers to Jenny. The following year, while rushing to an appointment on a rainy morning, Jenny loses control of her car and rear-ends a bus full of trial lawyers heading to the annual “I’ll See You in Court!” Convention in Fort Lauderdale. Several attorneys are injured and predictably lawsuits follow. Now, what happens to Jenny’s inheritance from George? It’s likely all gone to creditors. What is left to raise her children? Perhaps nothing. If George and Jenny had used a trust in their estate plan, the final outcome may have been different. While Jenny’s property would still be subject to creditor claims, her inheritance from George inside a trust would be safe for her and their children. In another sad scenario, imagine Jenny dies first. George later remarries Susan, a woman with four adult children from several marriages. What happens when George passes? His property, including what he inherited from Jenny, may go to Susan and eventually to Susan’s family. George and Jenny’s children could be completely disinherited! With a properly drawn trust, George and Jenny can rest assured that even if the surviving spouse remarries, their money will go to their children. Finally, think of George and Jenny happily enjoying retirement but unfortunately not too fond of their daughter’s husband, Robert. Jenny fears that their son-in-law will never earn a decent living, and may be dependent on their daughter to support him for the rest of his life. George worries that if they leave an inheritance to their daughter and she ultimately divorces Robert, a substantial portion of her inheritance could be lost to her “no-good husband.” If assets are left to their children in a trust, it will not be commingled with marital property. Therefore, in the event of a divorce, an heir’s inheritance will not be the subject of division and distribution. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?
