“We swore we weren’t ready for senior living. Then we saw The Palace.”
Jack & Evelyn Miller
“We were stunned. We stayed in the Four Seasons in Paris once, and The Palace in Weston looked better. Ten minutes after we walked in the door, we realized we had never seen senior living like this. Everything you can think of is at your fingertips. Chef-prepared meals in the dining room. A social director who makes cruise ships look dull. A staff trained to deliver such a high level of care and comfort they’ve been named #1 in America. Everywhere you look, it’s 5-star all the way. But you need good friends to share it with. Our crowd at The Palace are some of the best new friends we’ve ever met, and every single one of us will tell you: ‘We wish we had found The Palace sooner.’ ”
The Palace at Weston is taking reservations. Now is the time to visit our spectacular Weston Leasing Center at 15951 SW 41st St., Suite 500, Davie, FL 33331.

The Best Valentine’s Day Gift
F
ebruary is typically the month we shower those we love with gifts of chocolates and flowers, and maybe a piece of jewelry. This Valentine’s Day, why not give your loved one a gift that truly shows how much you care about them – the gift of life. February is American Heart Month and it’s the perfect time to help your family adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle and learn lifesaving CPR. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), someone in this country suffers a heart attack every 34 seconds. This is when blood flow to the heart is blocked. During a heart attack, seconds count. It is critical to keep the blood flowing until paramedics arrive. That’s why the AHA is encouraging everyone, even children, to learn hands-only CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). Throughout the month of February, local municipalities, fire departments, and other agencies and health care providers will be offering hands-only CPR classes. It consists of two simple steps – call 9-1-1 and then push hard and fast until help arrives. Immediate CPR can double or triple a person’s chances of survival after cardiac arrest. Take the time to learn this lifesaving technique, because the life you save will likely be that of someone you know. This is also the month to adopt a heart healthy lifestyle, if you haven’t already. That means eating nutrient-rich foods, exercising more (with at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week), and living a tobacco-free life. So, this Valentine’s Day, show your loved ones how much you really care – take the time to learn or refresh your CPR skills and commit to living a heart-healthy life.

West Broward High School Captures First-Ever Marching Band State Championship BY CHRISTY JAILLET
T
he West Broward High School Performance Ensemble is flying high and feeling proud after a truly magnificent competition year. And proud they should be! The band captured the Class 5A state championship following a once-in-a-lifetime performance at Daytona Stadium in Daytona Beach.
The Performance Ensemble, an evolution of the traditional marching band, consists of wind players, percussionists and a color guard. During competitions, ensembles are evaluated by a team of judges on a number of criteria including music performance, visual performance, general effect, percussion and
auxiliary (color guard). The band wowed spectators and judges in a fun, whimsical and eye-catching performance enhanced by large colorful rooftops and enormous gaslight lantern props. The show, titled “Lost in the Fog” was based on Mary Popins. The umbrella-wielding (ala Mary Poppins) and flag twirling color guard, dressed in long dark frocks, perfectly interpreted the flawlessly executed music of the marching band. The performance was the final victory of the year for the ensemble, earning them overall First Place in the FMBC (Florida Marching Band Championships) and making West Broward High’s Performance Ensemble State Champions for the 2019-2020 school year. “They won many local competitions and even marched at the Universal Studios Holiday Parade in December,” commented proud mom, Divina Gonzalez, “But winning the state championship at Daytona Stadium was the icing on the cake.” The band is led by Band Director, Dean Calmer, who has been with the school since it’s opening in 2008. He started with a very small ensemble, that has grown into the state champions. Calmer has aspirations to march in New York’s Macy’s Day
Parade in 2022. These state champions will be receiving special honors from the Pembroke Pines mayor and City Commission. Congratulations West Broward High School Performance Ensemble!

Broward County Schools to Commemorate MSD Victims with Day of Service BY JOHN DUKA
T
his Valentine’s Day, students and faculty across Broward County will observe a Day of Service and Love in commemoration of the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Rather than attending classes, students have been given the option to participate in a number of service projects as a way to give back to the community in honor of the 17 souls that were lost two years ago. In collaboration with HandsOnBroward, the City of Parkland, the City of Coral Springs and the Interfaith Council, schools across the district will participate in activities and service projects for their schools and local communities. “A Day of Service and Love honors our fallen eagles and our families and communities impacted by this tragedy,” said BCPS Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “We invite our entire community to be a meaningful part of the ongoing process of healing by pausing at 10:17 a.m. to honor and remember.” There will be no academic activities during the day of service. After participating in the programs, students will be released from school early. In addition, there will be a county-wide moment of silence at 10:17 AM across the school district. District schools

developed variety of activity plans for students for different aged students. Their objective is to engage students while raising awareness about important issues and causes. Projects at more than 230 sites, across the district, will include campus beautification, celebrating firstresponders by serving them breakfast, preparing meal packages for local food banks and more. Additional mental health professionals and law enforcement officers will be on campus throughout the day. The schools encourage parents to pay particular attention to their children’s electronic devices
leading up to the commemoration and to encourage them to alert and adult to any unusual social media activity. Dale Mandell, President and CEO of HandsOn Broward commented, “This event is truly an example of the community coming together to honor all of those affected by the tragedy. Through the selfless acts of volunteers, our schools and communities will shine.” For more infomation on the Day of Service or to find out how you can become involved contact Dr. Philip Harris, program recorery manager at BCPS at754-321-1660

etting to and from Miami just got easier and faster thanks to the new 75 Express Bus. It provides direct service from the park and ride lots at the BB&T Center in Sunrise and Miami Gardens Drive (@ I-75) to the Miami Airport Station, where you can transfer to local rail or bus to destinations throughout MiamiDade County. This premium bus service has started, and readers can get a FREE 3-DAY PASS to try South Florida’s nationally recognized transit service today. Western Broward and Miami-Dade County residents can now easily join the thousands of South Floridians who use Express Buses each day to get to work. For more information on how to get your FREE 3-DAY PASS, go to www.TryTransitFree.com. The 75 Express Bus is funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and operated by Broward County Transit. It builds upon the success of the 95 Express Bus and 595 Express Bus services, which continually receive rave reviews. Riders who use those bus services rate them satisfactory or above satisfactory.
Fast, Comfortable, Convenient
The Express Buses are used primarily by riders who own their own cars, but welcome the convenience, comfort and cost savings of commuting in the coach-style buses. One-way fares on the 75 Express Bus are available for as little as $1.30 and monthly passes cost less than $100. The 75 Express Bus will offer free Wi-Fi, air-conditioned comfort, comfortable seating and will travel in the express lanes for faster more reliable travel times. Service will be provided every 30 minutes during the peak morning and afternoon commute times. Commuters can take com-
fort in knowing that life’s little emergencies are not an issue thanks to FDOT’s Guaranteed Ride Home program. This government-funded program will cover the cost of Lyft or taxi rides home if the Express Bus is unavailable and you need to leave work early for an emergency or have to stay late for an unscheduled overtime.
A Better Way to Commute
This new, premium transit service is designed to get commuters from western Broward

County to their places of employment in Miami-Dade County quickly and reliably. Morning service begins as early as 5:40am with continual buses running until 9:40am. The afternoon commute begins at 3:45pm with the last bus leaving the Miami Airport Station at 7:20pm and scheduled to arrive at the BB&T Center by 8:24pm. “The new 75 Express Service demonstrates continual growth of our commitment to residents to continue making it easier and
more convenient to use public transit. The 75 Express will offer better connectivity to Miami and give commuters an economical and stress-free option for traveling to their destination, especially those who live and work along the I-75 corridor,” said Transportation Director Chris Walton. The Express Bus system is a core component of the express lanes along I-75, I-595 and I-95. The express lanes are multi-modal facilities designed

to reduce traffic congestion and promote choices in how and when residents commute. Instead of paying a toll, or relatively higher tolls (typically during high-traffic times), 75 Express Bus riders can now enjoy the time-saving benefits of the express lanes at no additional cost.

South Broward High School Student Takes the Stage BY BEVERLY PERKINS
E
ach year select students are chosen to be Teen Ambassadors at the Broward Center for The Performing Arts. Now in its 10th year, the Teen Ambassadors program continues to foster the next generation of performing arts fans. The goal of the program is to give these students a platform to expose other teens to the world of the performing arts through their perspective with hopes of getting them more involved. During the 2019-2020 season 26 high school students representing 21 public, private, or home schools in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties come together to enhance their knowledge of the arts by attending performances and workshops presented at the Broward Center and their affiliated venues. Included in this prestigious bunch of students is Pembroke Pines Charter School’s very own Maci Castillo. “Putting on a show with a consistent plot that sometimes is conveyed through song is a tough task. Just being able to see that process come to life, whether it’s through the intricacy and detail of set design or the complexity and layers of the Maci Castillo score, really interests me,” says the ambitious tenth grader. Currently, Maci’s favorite class at school is AICE English Language class because it helps her improve her writing skills by emulating different authors
through their style, and by analyzing various works as well. It has also helped her explore and learn about authors that she hasn’t gotten the chance to read about yet and allows her to really dive deep into their works. There’s no doubt that this class will help her excel in the theatre program. Through written and video reviews, their behindthe-scenes experiences and exclusive educational opportunities, including introductions to performances in every artistic discipline. Acting as in-house theater critics, the ambassadors must demonstrate a dedication to both the performing arts and writing. The students also earn community service hours through this innovative program that ensures a fresh perspective on traditional and contemporary arts. “It means the world to me that I was named a Teen Ambassador at the Broward Center! Being a Teen Ambassador helps expand my knowledge of the theater world and helps improve my writing skills. I love theater and I love writing, so getting to do this is the ultimate dream because it combines both,” exclaims Maci. “When I graduate high school, I would love to pursue a career that has both theater and journalism combined. They both mean so much to me, and I would love to continue to work with both elements in my life forever.”

Small Space Living BY NEVINE GROULX, ETHNICA DESIGN
“We downsized to a condo. How do I decorate a smaller space? How can I make the most out of smaller area?”
S
mall space living is challenging but not to an expert eye, there’s always a way to maximize the capacity of any room. Plus, today’s market is full of organizational products Ethnica Designs and storage solutions. One is offering FREE of the biggest benefits of CONSULTATIONS living in a smaller space through February for is that it forces us to really edit down the number of Our City readers for belongings that we have in our homes. In return, you any interior design or end up getting rid of the things that don’t really serve renovation projects. a purpose in your life anymore because they become unpractical, useless, or overcrowding to your space. To maximize your space, choose furniture that can-do double duty. Invest in smart furniture that has storage built right in. If you have already have furniture picked out and it’s not storage-friendly, the least you can do is stretch its organizational capabilities like adding storage bins under the bed, and adding wicker baskets under the coffee table, and keep bigger pieces of furniture on the perimeters of the room rather in the middle of the floor. Make use of the walls by adding wall-mounted shelves which take up no floor space at all. If you need a desk for work, consider buying a space-saving desk that folds up when not in use. If you don’t have enough kitchen cabinet storage, try displaying your pantry supplies on a shelving system that is slim and sleek and
can utilize the whole wall up to the ceiling if needed while adding top bins or baskets for extra storage. When choosing a bed, opt for either a storage bed or a sofa bed. These are particularly helpful for those moving into a studio apartment where space is tight. If you live in a small loft or a townhouse and have stairs, you can utilize the area under the stairway and incorporate drawers for extra storage since this area is often overlooked and forgotten space. Not having a huge home doesn’t mean you can’t flaunt your style. Decorating a small space simply requires the ingenuity of design and a good eye for what works and what doesn’t. While the focus is naturally going to be a bit different when working with less square footage, the general rules of design are pretty much the same. Add a splash of creativity and can-do attitude and you’ve got yourself a recipe for success. Nevine Groulx for Ethnica Designs has been designing interiors for 15 years. She received her interior design certification from Smart Majority School of Design in England and has been a prominent and well-known designer in Canada for the past 15 years. She now resides permanently in South Florida and can be reached at 954-600-0401 or by email ethnicadesigns@hotmail.com.

Less invasive option for valve disease treatment offers benefit with fewer risks Aortic valve stenosis is one of the most common and serious conditions affecting the heart’s valves. It Robert J. Cubeddu, MD is a narrowing of the aortic valve opening, which is the passage for oxygen-rich blood to leave the heart and go out into the body. When the valve opening is narrowed, the flow of this blood is blocked or reduced. This condition is most common in people 65 or older, severely affecting nearly 500,000 people in the United States each year. It can cause shortness of breath, chest pain, congestive heart failure, and, ultimately, death if left untreated. A revolutionary approach to treatment Replacing the diseased valve is the standard treatment for most patients with aortic stenosis. Until recently, however, the replacement had to be done through a surgical procedure in which the patient’s chest was opened in order to access the heart. In recent years, the transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure has revolutionized treatment for aortic stenosis. It is minimally invasive, allowing the surgeon to replace the valve through a catheter placed in the femoral
artery, which runs up the thigh, through the abdomen and to the heart. A multitude of studies have shown TAVR to be a safe and effective alternative to traditional valve replacement, offering patients minimal risk and discomfort, a shorter hospital stay (usually only one or two days vs. five to seven days with the open procedure), and a prompt recovery. “Aortic stenosis is a condition that offers a malignant course. As with open heart surgery, this procedure cures the condition,” says Robert J. Cubeddu, MD, Chairman of Cardiovascular Medicine and Section Head for Structural Heart Disease at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Tomsich Heart and Vascular Center, “Many centers offer TAVR but our team has tremendous expertise and experience in this type of treatment.” Specialists in Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Heart and Vascular Center have more than 10 years of experience with TAVR procedures and the center performs among the highest volume of implants in the state of Florida. Our experience in TAVR and our expertise in structural heart disease translate to the best possible outcomes for our patients. ASK THE EXPERT
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Use in the Foot and Ankle BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA
H
ealing after an injury involves a well-orchestrated and complex series of events where proteins in the blood act as messengers to regulate the entire process. Many proteins involved in the healing process are derived from small cell fragments in the blood called platelets. Platelets are small, colorless, cell fragments present in the blood. They are formed in the bone marrow and pass freely through the bloodstream in a resting state. However, when an injury occurs, the platelets become activated and start to gather at the injury site to release beneficial proteins called growth factors. This is the beginning of the healing process. For many years, blood components derived from the patient and then delivered to the site of injury have created growing interest for use in orthopedic procedures. New research and technology have expanded the application of this therapy. What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)? Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentration of platelets and growth factors created from a small amount of your own blood. Increased levels of growth factors have the potential to improve signaling and recruitment of cells. What conditions can it treat? PRP can be used to treat arthritis (foot or ankle), ligament injuries (acute or chronic), tendon injuries (acute or chronic), joint pain, chronic inflammatory conditions, Achilles Tendonitis, Plantar Fasciitis, chronic nerve irritation
(Neuritis), shin splints and heel spurs. How does the PRP process work? Doctors will recover a small amount of blood from your arm using a small needle and a specially designed syringe. The blood then goes through a rapid spinning process that separates and concentrates the platelets and other beneficial growth factors from the blood. The entire PRP production process is usually done in less than 20 minutes. What happens after that? The injected area will be anesthetized with a local anesthetic (Lidocaine). The blood with its PRP will be injected into the area directly or with the aid of ultrasound or x-ray. Am I a candidate for treatment with PRP? The doctor will perform an examination to make a determination if the use of PRP will benefit you. If you are on antiinflammatory medications or blood thinners, your physician may temporarily discontinue the use of these until your treatment has taken place. What are the risks associated with this treatment? PRP uses your body’s own natural properties to treat your injury. Side effects utilizing PRP systems are very uncommon. n Carlo A. Calling all Landscapers Does Your Yard Have What it Takes to be a Great Yard! BY: JOHN DUKA
C
alling all Landscapers and yard connoisseurs to show off their gardens! Pines residents can sign up right now for the 2020 Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Award Contest. Now entering its ninth year, the Great Yards Award competition was created in memory of Natalie Belmonte, a well-known resident and businesswoman who had a love for nature, and who tragically lost her life in July of 2011. Residents are encouraged to register their own yard or a friend’s before the deadline on Friday, April 10th. Last year, five Pembroke Pines yards were selected as winners, one from each City Commission District and one overall champion. Following unexpected popularity and participation over the last few years, the contest has been extended to both commercial properties and educational institutions, resulting in seven total winners. Members of the Pembroke Pines Environmental Advisory Board will judge the competing yards on five different criteria: 1. Butterfly component: This area judges the preservation of all stages of a butterfly’s life. It should supply food and shelter with the proper selection of plants. (Sage, Lavender, Milkweed, Goldenrod, Firebush, Penta… are some suggested plants). 2. Design and function: This area judges the overall design, use of texture, compatibility of materials, continuity, balance, and the overall function of the landscape in correlation to the use of the property. 3. Maintenance: The focus on this section will be the overall view of the property’s landscape maintenance. The judges will be looking to see that the planter

beds are kept weed free, edged, and that mulching and fertilization is kept up. 4. Florida Friendly Value: The use of low-maintenance plants and environmentally sustainable practices. Mulching techniques will also be observed, checking to see if the mulch is deep enough to retain moisture in the soils. 5. Use of Hardscapes: This section judges the use of non-living additions to finish a landscape, such as fountains, ponds, statues, boulders, decks, mulch, stones, etc. Butterfly Applicants should provide a general description of their property, its landscaping, how it ultimately meets the objectives of the Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Award Contest and include 10 photos of their yard. n Contest requirements with details of each section and applications are available at the Planning and Economic Development Department in City Hall, or via the City’s website by visiting www.ppines.com and searching keywords ‘Natalie Belmonte’.

DR. MILAGRITOS RIOS, DMD ery often, I meet embarrassed patients at my practice, due to bad breath, because it certainly limits our social life. If we are aware of our bad breath, it is common to try to keep some distance from people we are close with. Often, we cannot or are unable to even kiss them. Many times we try to hide it with a mint. If this sounds like you. Have no fear, you are not alone. Bad breath or halitosis is more common than you think, but in order to fight it is necessary to know what causes it because depending on the reason we can find the remedy. Some of the known causes of bad breath Eating foods high in onion and garlic, chewing or smoking tobacco and lack of oral hygiene are frequent causes of bad breadt. Flossing and brushing your teeth & tongue after doing any of the activities mentioned above will greatly help reduce the bad smell. It is also true that in the case of food, the smell will not disappear until they have completely passed through the digestive system. Some of the natural medicinal cures consider chewing mint leaves. Other common and probably unknown causes Dry mouth, acid reflux, poor ill-fitting dentures leading to yeast infections, gum disease or periodontal disease, cavities (dental decay), respiratory infections, diabetes, kidney problems, among others. PuzzleJunction.com If you notice your breath has been less than fresh lately, start following a healthy routine, like flossing once a day, and brushing your teeth and tongue at least twice a day for 2 minutes. Also, drink plenty of water, chew sugarless gum and cut back on caffeine. These steps may help get your saliva flowing and boost the freshness of your breath. One Myth common myth is believing that you can sense the smell of your own breath in your hand, this is not very effective. It is very hard to bring the smell from the back of your mouth where the bad odor originates and also because you get used to the smell and can’t notice it anymore. If you notice your bad breath persists, check in with your dentist. Together, you can track down the cause. With a proper cleaning and exam, your dentist can help rule out any oral health problems and advise you on next steps, including what types of dental products to use, treatment plans to take care of cavities or gum disease or refer you to a medical provider to follow up.

What Does Child Support Cover? BY EVAN H. BARON, ESQ. ’m often asked, “what expenses does child support actually cover”? The answer is very general in nature. It is a contribution to all monthly household expenses, such as rent/mortgage, utilities, food, etc. It is a contribution towards the regular monthly expenses of the parent’s household. A parent cannot designate the expense his/her support payment should be used for. It cannot be deposited into a separate account solely for the benefit of a child. In addition, child support does not cover some normal and customary expenses for the children such as extracurricular activities, uncovered medical expenses, school expenses, college funding. All of these expenses must be addressed separately as additional contributions from each parent. Private school tuition is also not credited against the monthly child support obligation, as private school is considered a privilege and not a necessity since a child can attend public school at no cost.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience. 44 FEBRUARY 2020 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
The laws in Florida generally allow a judge or the parties quite a bit of discretion when finalizing family law cases. However, there is one particular area of the law which requires strict compliance. This concerns the issue of child support. In either a Dissolution of Marriage or a Paternity action, child support must be addressed. The parents cannot waive a child’s right to financial support, nor can they deviate from the state-mandated monthly amount as determined by the Florida Legislature in their Child Support Guidelines. Even if both parents agree, a monthly support amount cannot be less than required by the Guidelines, although it can certainly be greater. The monthly amount is based upon a number of factors. The primary factor is the income of each parent. If a parent is not employed the court will impute income, generally equal to a minimum wage, unless said parent has the ability to be employed at a higher income. Once each party’s percentage of contribution is determined, a Guideline Chart will establish the minimum support payment. The child support amount is also impacted by the number of overnight visitations exercised by each parent. Generally speaking, the more overnights exercised by the paying parent, the less support he/she will probably pay. Additional considerations that are included in determining the monthly payment are the cost of daycare/aftercare and health insurance premiums for the minor child’s coverage. Ultimately, whatever child support obligation applies to your family, that support is available to contribute towards the everyday expenses necessary to provide a roof over the child’s head, food on their table and clothes on their backs. n The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

MESSA III, M.D., F.A.C.S. reast Implant Illness (BII) is a term used by women who have breast implants and who self- identify and describe a variety of symptoms including autoimmune issues, muscle aches, joint pain, fatigue, hair loss, headaches, photosensitivity, chronic pain, rash, anxiety, brain fog, sleep disturbance, depression, neurologic issues and hormonal issues that they feel are directly connected to their saline or silicone breast implants. The recent increase in patients reporting Breast Implant Illness (BII) symptoms appears to be related to increased awareness based on social media and presence of breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). There is one Facebook group alone with more than 50,000 members, all of whom report Breast Implant Illness (BII) symptoms. There is no diagnostic testing specifically for Breast Implant Illness (BII). This is one of the current areas of focus for the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation, the research arm of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. There are tests for autoimmune diseases that can be performed to evaluate for potential causes of a patient’s symptoms. There are patients who have symptoms they attribute to Breast Implant Illness (BII) with positive immune testing and others with all laboratory tests which show no abnormalities. In 1999, The Institute of Medicine Committee on the Safety of Silicone conducted an extensive review of the available literature and concluded there was no demonstrated clear link between silicone implants and any systemic illness. There have been studies of many different sizes and design to look at the safety of breast implants themselves. These have looked at specific autoimmune disorders and diseases. These studies show little to no links between breast 5:13 PM implants and any disease. Studies of patients who have symptoms that they have related to their breast implants have not shown consistent laboratory abnormalities to define a distinct syndrome. To-date, there has been very little in the way of research into this entity that has been labelled Breast Implant Illness (BII) by women with breast implants. Various studies show different degrees of improvement in patient symptoms after removal of their breast implants, some of which are temporary, and some showing permanent resolution of symptoms. There are no studies which specifically show which symptoms may or may not improve with implant removal with or without capsulectomy. There is no current definitive epidemiological evidence to support a direct link between breast implants and any specific disease process. There are many factors that can affect the interaction between a patient and her breast implants. Further study is required to determine the best way to potentially screen patients prior to breast implant surgery and to determine which of the multitude of reported symptoms might improve with implant and capsule removal. A lack of a direct, proven scientific link does not mean that the symptoms experienced by these patients are not real. Some patients have legitimate concerns about a potential link between breast implants and symptoms. For individuals who have breast implants and complains of Breast Implant Illness (BII) symptoms options can include: further medical work up with or without the consultation of a rheumatologist, observation without medical work up, implant removal without capsulectomy, exchange with or without capsulectomy, removal with total capsulectomy, or removal with en bloc capsulectomy. As there is no definitive link between the often subjective and divergent list of symptoms, and no means for testing, there is no ‘known’ risk. Many of the symptoms described by breast implant patients are experienced by the general public on a regular basis with or without implants. . n Dr. Messa is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery & the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, & a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. LEGALLY SPEAKING
Yours, Mine and Ours BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE sad fact is that the average marriage lasts only seven years, with one out of two marriages ending in divorce. As over seventy-five percent of divorced individuals eventually choose to remarry, blended families now outnumber traditional nuclear families. And while this family dynamic has become the new normal, it’s a far cry from what was portrayed on the classic television series, “The Brady Bunch.” If you are part of a blended family, you face some unique estate planning challenges. These include providing for your current spouse if he or she survives you, and making sure that when your spouse dies your children will be taken care of. Family relationships may change dramatically after the first spouse dies and what the surviving spouse does with his or her assets can often be unpredictable. Let’s review just a few possible estate planning options. Your spouse. A simple, albeit not wise, approach would be to leave everything to your spouse. As your spouse adores your children, you have no doubt that he/ she will always take care of your children, right? Realistically, this approach might end up totally disinheriting your own children! Consider this. If your spouse becomes incapacitated it is very likely that your spouse’s children will take over the financial affairs of the family. You don’t need a vivid imagination

to see how that might turn into a disaster. What happens when your spouse dies? Or remarries? Your assets may ultimately be inherited by your stepchildren, or even by the person who marries your spouse. Proper legal planning can avoid these pitfalls. Your children. Another solution is to leave assets to your children. Of course, this guarantees that your children will not be disinherited, but this path may also lead to unintended consequences. Leaving assets outright to your children opens up a wide range of concerns, including the possibility that they may squander their inheritance by spending or investing unwisely, or lose most or all in a nasty divorce, an untimely lawsuit, or through bankruptcy. Even if your children are adults, shouldn’t you still consider protecting them from future creditors and predators? Your ex-spouse. You probably don’t consider your ex, but your former spouse does play a role in your estate planning. Think about it. If you leave money to your minor children, it is likely that your ex-spouse will be appointed by the probate court to manage your children’s property. What happens if a child dies while single and childless? Who would inherit their assets? As the next-of-kin of your children, that individual can be your ex-wife or ex-husband! Planning effectively for a blended family requires creativity and experience. Consult with an estate planning professional to formulate a plan that is right for you and your family.
