18th Annual Relay For Life Overnight Event Helps Fight Cancer COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

T

his year 1.5 million people will hear the dreaded words, “You have cancer.” On March 31, thousands of people who have been touched by cancer will gather on the track at Walter C Young Middle School for the 19th Annual Relay For Life of Pembroke Pines. The 15-hour overnight event (from Friday, March 31 at 6pm to Saturday, April 1 at 9am), for ages 3 to 93, will last all night, because cancer never sleeps. Relay For Life is the nationwide signature event of the American Cancer Society. It is NOT just a race or walk. Teams of people and individuals have fun while raising funds to fight cancer and increase awareness of cancer prevention and treatment. The event gives participants a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. This year, organizers have set a goal to raise over $200,000. Teams have been fundraising for the past few months. Anyone can volunteer, form a team, or join a team. All of the teams are encouraged to dress up and decorate their campsites in this year’s “Journey Towards a Cure” theme. The overnight event will feature a variety of activities honoring and supporting those who have had cancer. Some of them include the traditional Survivor Dinner, Survivor Lap and Luminaria Ceremony. There will also be nonstop entertainment and activities throughout the event, including contests, scavenger hunt and more. Every hour, there will be a special themed lap, when participants might have to wear pajamas or walk backwards. One of the crowd’s favorite activities occurs at approximately 2am, when the men dress in drag and compete for the coveted title of “Ms. Relay.” Since it began, the Pembroke Pines Relay For Life has raised close to $3 million.

Last year’s event raised over $180,000, with the top 10 teams raising over $128,000. Co-chair Andy Kearns was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2007, underwent successful treatment, and has been cancer-free ever since. He lost his father and brother-in-law to cancer, and has other family members and friends who have been affected by this disease. “Participating in Relay For Life has been a life changing experience,” said Kearns. “No one chooses to ‘join the club’ of cancer survivors, but Relay For Life provides us with an opportunity to fight back in a tangible manner against an abstract foe. By increasing participation and awareness in Relay For Life, we enable the ACS to fully implement research and advocacy programs for all in the cancer the cancer community - patients, caregivers, health care professionals, and cancer researchers.” Co-chair Lisa Perlman first participated in the event ten years ago as a survivor on a Walter C. Young Middle School team. She then joined the Event Leadership Team as a survivor/ caregiver chairperson for five years. She is currently the team captain for Sunset Lake Eagles. “The ACS helped me over 12 years ago when I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma,” said Perlman. “Discovering Relay while I was an honorary survivor on a youth team opened my eyes to the wonderful organization that helps so many people deal with cancer. Whether it is by fundraising, advocating or just spreading the word, each person can do something. We need to work together as a community to bring an end to cancer.” For information, visit www.RelayForLife.org. Cancer survivors should call 954-564-0880 to find out the special ways they can participate. To join the Mayor’s team, call 954-435-6525 or send an email to fnovo@ppines.com.

dollars for the school system. Golfers can enjoy the green for $250 per player or $1,000 per foursome. Registration begins at 10:30 am at the Pembroke Lakes Country Club. The winning team was made up of Radio Personalities from Y100 Footy, Froggy, Ivan Rosado and Austin Rumaner. On April 2, the Pembroke Pines Charter Schools will hold another fundraiser. Participants can run, walk or skip their way through the streets of Pembroke Pines during the 5k Flamingo Strut. It is not too soon to begin organizing a team. PPTOPA Presents “She Loves Me” on Stage COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

I

f you have always dreamed of seeing a Broadway show, the Pembroke Pines Theatre of the Performing Arts (PPTOPA) can give you a taste of what it is like. It offers top-notch community theatre at an affordable price. Through March 19, “She Loves Me” will be on stage for several performances. Show times are Friday and Saturday nights at 8pm, as well as Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 2pm, at the Susan B. Katz Theatre at the River of Grass Arts Park. “We invite everyone to come see the show,” said Mina Mandel, executive vice-president. “The cast is fabulous and talented. It is the best Broadway value for your dollar.” “She Loves Me” is a musical with a book by Joe Masteroff, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and music by Jerry Bock. The plot revolves around Budapest shop employees Georg Nowack and Amalia Balash who, despite being consistently at odds with each other at work, are unaware that each is the other’s secret pen pal met through lonelyhearts ads. The show includes well-known songs like Vanilla Ice Cream, She Loves Me and Will He Like Me? The PPTOPA production includes: Director Beverley Shanahan, Musical Director Michael Day, Chris D’Angelo (Georg Nowack), Stephanie Epstein (Amalia Balash), Kevin Smith (Steven Kodaly) and Del Marrero (Choreographer/ Ilona Ritter). On March 4, meet at the theater for Wine and Wind Down, which includes dinner with a keepsake glass and show. Tickets are adults ($35) and children ($25). On March 11, there is a senior matinee at 2pm. Senior tickets are only $15. PPTOPA is the oldest continuously operating community theater in Broward

County. It was founded in 1993 by a group of dedicated individuals who wanted to provide low cost, high quality live theater for the community, as well as opportunities for anyone interested in assisting in the creation of theater. While technically an “amateur” company, PPTOPA productions routinely feature some of the finest actors and actresses in South Florida. They are teachers, attorneys, doctors, business owners and others who volunteer their time to immerse themselves in something they love. Recent casts have included performers who have headlined productions at Stage Door, Curtain Call, Tamarac, and Actors Theaters. They have been on national Broadway tours, starred in Hollywood films, and written and produced their own plays. Many have been nominated and selected as recipients of South Florida’s Carbonell awards. PPTOPA presents four shows annually and many of them have attracted as many as 6,000 people. With a full orchestra, as well as professional sets, backdrops and costumes, the plays are expensive to produce. The theater raises money through donations and ticket sales, which range from $19 to $30 for adults and $15 for children. The next show will be “In the Heights,” from July 14 to August 6. Performances are held at the Susan B. Katz Theatre, 17195 Sheridan Street, in the River of Grass Artspark. For information, to order tickets or to volunteer, call 954-437-4884, visit www. pptopa.com or send an email to info@pptopa.org.

City of Pembroke Pines Celebrates Kindness COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

I

n support of the United States Conference of Mayors Kindness Initiative, Mayor Frank C. Ortis and Dr. Bob Runcie, Broward County School Board Superintendent, recently challenged leaders in every Broward County city to embrace the Kindness Initiative by organizing events to promote awareness for kindness, compassion and forgiveness. Last month, the City of Pembroke Pines collaborated with the Broward County School Board to hosting its first kindness community event. “Everyone has the power to be kind, to forgive, and be compassionate,” said Mayor Ortis. “Imagine our communities if everyone embraced this message.” Over 1,500 people attended the Kindness Initiative at William B. Armstrong Dream Park in Pembroke Pines. The music and activities at the free event reinforced the broader message of kindness. Ortis and Runcie reminded people of all ages to serve as role models by practicing patience and tolerance, and creating a culture of kindness in their lives that has a positive impact on those around them. Their message seemed to have an immediate impact. “No one honked their horn or cut anybody off, as they exited the parking lot,” said Ortis. “We hope this kindness event has legs, and other communities accept our challenge.” Some of the event highlights included: ▸▸ Families and friends decorated their picnic area with peace-filled symbols. ▸▸ Children and adults practiced making random acts of kindness promises. ▸▸ Semi-professionals and children from Pembroke Pines schools sang and played music. ▸▸ Guests participated in kindness activities, such as reading books about acts of kindness, creating kindness crafts, and distributing peace coins and wrist bands. ▸▸ The Peace Pole, imprinted with May Peace Prevail on Earth in four languages (English, Creole, Portuguese and Spanish), was presented to one of

the participating schools. ▸▸ Participants created a human peace sign. “We believe our community will develop a culture of kindness,” said Francie Novo, special events coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. “Kindness does not cost money. Making the time to be nice and helpful is an investment in our community. The best part is the smile you see on a person’s face when they are the recipient of a random act of your kindness.” To continue to pledge your kindness promise and learn about the kind movement, visit www.cityofkindness.org. For information about the Pembroke Pines Kindness Day Event, call 954-392-2116 or visit www.ppines.com/special events.

They have developed their own vein techniques and are recognized as vein and laser experts. Dr. Fox answered some commonly asked questions about her practice.

Describe your practice. We are a full service vein

and laser practice and vascular lab. We perform all types of minimally invasive, cutting edge, vein procedures and non-ablative laser procedures. We rid people of their varicose and spider veins; heal venous ulcers; help leg swelling, aching, heaviness and tiredness; and improve the overall appearance of the legs. We are also one of the only practices in South Florida to offer the Picoway Laser. This is the best laser for tattoo removal, spot removal and non-ablative skin resurfacing. It is a “lunchtime lift” that will smooth wrinkles, build collagen and remove discolorations.

Describe your experience. After training in Cleveland at the Cleveland Clinic, I practiced in Cleveland and later moved to Miami. I have been performing vein and laser procedures for decades. We have been featured as vein and laser experts by multiple news programs in America and Latin America. I have written numerous articles and lectured extensively on varicose veins. I have developed my own technique for injecting veins and our office has been a recognized as a

training facility by multiple corporations.

Tell me about some of your “firsts.” I was the

first physician in Cleveland to perform endovenous laser ablation and one of the first nationally. We were the first in Broward County to offer the Clarivein procedure and one of the first in the country. For decades, I have performed ultrasound guided injections and foam sclerotherapy. We are also one of the first in South Florida to own and offer the Picoway laser and Resolve by Picoway: the fastest and best laser for tattoo removal, spot removal and skin rejuvenation. We have decades of experience treating veins and using lasers and thousands of happy Dr. Susan B. Fox patients. Nothing speaks louder than a happy patient.

What are some of the procedures you offer?

We offer the newest and best minially- invasive vein procedures including: Endovenous laser ablation, Clarivein, Vein Gogh, Venaseal, Phlebectomies and ultrasound guided foam and regular sclerotherapy. We offer tattoo and spot removal with the Picoway laser. This laser clears discolorations, spots and tattoos of all colors faster and with Before no down time. It is also less painful than prior lasers. It can be used for skin rejuvenation, hand rejuvenation, to remove discoloration from varicose veins in the ankles and feet, remove sun spots on the face After and décolleté, smooth scars and erase acne scars. Resolve by Picoway shrinks pores, tightens skin, erases sun spots and discolorations and builds collagen with no down time.

Where do you perform procedures? All pro-

cedures are done in our office. In most cases, we can get rid of your large varicose veins, leg pain and swelling with minimally invasive procedures done under insurance in less than 30 minutes.

What is vein disease and how does it progress? Veins are

blood vessels that have one- way valves that return blood to the heart. These valves often do not work correctly and can cause “reflux” or back flow. This causes

Fox Vein & Laser Experts blood to pool in the ankles and pain and heaviness and swelling in the legs that worsens at the end of the day, after travelling or standing. Over time, the ankles start to get more and more veins. The legs get more painful, swollen and bulging veins appear. Discoloration appears in the ankles and skin changes in the ankles and feet develop. As time goes on skin changes may worsen and the person may develop venous eczema, scarring called lipodermatosclerosis and open sores or ulcers. People may have bleeding veins that are hard to stop.

What should people do about vein disease?

Patients with symptoms should come see us and have an ultrasound to diagnose their specific vein problems. In the meantime, the person should elevate their legs, wear compression hose and take anti-inflammatories for discomfort.

Why should people remove tattoos?

Approximately 25-30% of people in the United States have tattoos. At any given time, around a quarter of them are looking into tattoo removal. Men remove them more than women, usually for their profession and to move up the corporate ladder. Many jobs will not employ someone or move them up to management with visible tattoos. Governmental jobs, military, police and others do not want tattoos in visible areas. As well, some people put their significant others name on them. Some people just change stages in their life and the tattoos are no longer a part of who they are. Some people want room for more ink. Whatever the reason, Picoway is the best tattoo removal laser. It removes all colors of ink faster using pico technology. It works better and with less pain and fewer treatment sessions than other lasers.

PPCHS Students “Dash” Through City Hall to Raise Funds for Honor Flight South Florida SCHOOL NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

M

embers of the Pembroke Pines Charter High School Student Government Association (SGA) recently “dashed” throughout Pembroke Pines City Hall to help raise money for Honor Flight South Florida, a nonprofit volunteer program created to honor America’s Veterans. This is the third year that the school’s SGA has held a Dollar Dash for Honor South Florida. “We help raise funds to fly American War Veterans to Washington, D.C. for a day trip where they tour the Veteran Memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifice,” said Andrew Curry, Pembroke Pines Charter High School’s Student Government Association Adviser/AICE International History, AICE U.S. History, and Leadership Development Teacher. The students walked each floor of the six-story building carrying large buckets. As they met with each person, they explained the mission behind the Honor Flight program and the importance each donation made to City Hall employees. Last year, they raised almost $2,000. This year, they raised $2,797 at City Hall. “The Pembroke Pines Charter High School’s annual Dash for Dollars Honor Flight event exceeded fundraising history and expectations, “said Director of the Pembroke Pines Community Services and Housing Department Jay Shechter, whose father and two uncles served in

World War II. “Thanks to these students, six World War II Veterans will be flown free of charge for the Honor Flight day trip to Washington, D.C. They will be honored and recognized throughout the day for their service to this great country. They will arrive back home the same day tired, but feeling appreciated by the country they served.” Since Honor Flight South Florida began in 2012, it has taken over 600 local WWII Veterans on the Honor Flight to Washington, DC to visit those memorials dedicated to honor the service and sacrifices of themselves and their friends. It has also brought hundreds of our World War II Veterans to local schools as guest speakers. “Our WWII Veterans bring a unique life experience to the classroom,” said Ryan Paton, Director of Operations for Honor Flight South Florida. “The students get to meet and learn from those who have lived world history, and the Veterans love the experience.” For information, visit www.honorflightsouthflorida.org. To make a donation to PPCHS’s effort, make a check payable to PPCHS or Honor Flight and mail it c/o Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing, 301 N.W. 103rd Avenue, Pembroke Pines, FL 33026.

Pamper Your Pooch at the West Broward High School Dog Wash BY DEBBY TEICH

Students pamper pooches at the 2016 event.

O

n April 1, from 10am – 2pm, West Broward High School (WBHS) students earning their Veterinary Assistant Certifications will be pampering pooches to help raise money for the program. The public is invited to bring their pooches to the school for a Dog Wash, which will be held near the school’s softball field. All services are $5 each and include: wash, blow dry, nail clipping, ear cleaning and anal glands expressed. A licensed veterinarian will also be offering a vaccination clinic from 12noon – 2pm. The booster club is hoping to raise $2,000, which will be used towards lab supplies and other supplementary learning materials. Approximately 350 WBHS students are currently enrolled in the vocational program. They are earning a Veterinary Assistant Certification through the Florida Veterinary Medical Association at the same time as their high school diploma. The certificate allows them to work in a veterinary office as a vet assistant and gives them an advantage during the hiring process. There are five levels for certification, which are taken over three years. The students have the option of taking additional classes in which they go off campus and

Students learn basic care of companion animals and livestock, common diseases and parasites, effects of overpopulation, use of and training of service animals, anatomy/physiology of companion animals, restraint, veterinary lab skills, and more. The FVMA requires the students to earn 500 clinical hours within a year of their certification test to earn full certification - 250 of those hours are earned on campus as part of class time and the remainder must be earned working under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. “Some of students are interested in going on to Vet school or want to work as a Vet Assistant after high school,” said Tara Terribile, Vet Assisting Teacher & Program Director, who has been teaching the vocational program at the school since it opened in 2008. “Others just love animals and want to learn more about them.” Junior Karah Perlman of Pembroke Pines hopes to attend University of Florida to earn a degree in Veterinarian Medicine. She plans to be a veterinarian when she graduates college. “There is no other high school in my area with this type of program,” said Karah. “Upon completion of the Veterinarian Program at West Broward High School, I will be a Certified Vet Tech. The practical on hands training I have gained while in the program has assisted me in finding a job at a veterinarian clinic in Pembroke Pines.” Pitbulls and Pitbull crosses are not permitted. Enter the parking lot at 210th and 2nd. Follow road to area bordering softball field. West Broward High School is located at 500 NW 209th Avenue.

Students Perform Winter Fantasy to a Sold Out Crowd

S

tudents from Pembroke Pines Charter High School recently performed for a sold out crowd of 500 people at the Susan B. Katz River of Grass Auditorium in Pembroke Pines. This show, Winter Fantasy, included 300 students from the Fine Arts Department. The show was initiated by Andrea Kidd, a Fine Arts teacher for 33 years, eight of which have been with the Pembroke Pines Charter High School. “Our program showcases the talent of our high school Art, Drama, Music and Dance programs, as well as students from the Advanced Drama program at the adjacent Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School Academic Village Campus,” said Kidd. The show also served as an opportunity for the Charter High School Fine Arts students to mentor the Middle School Advanced Drama students and raise funds for the PPCHS Electives Department. “Our Winter Fantasy production highlights the seamless system-wide Fine Arts

instruction we provide our students,” said Kidd. “Working together to showcase our Drama, Dance, Art, Jazz Band and Advanced Drama results in a beautiful effort and illustrates the collaborative mentality of the Pembroke Pines Charter School System.”

Flanagan Students and Faculty Rally Behind Teen with Cancer BY DEBBY TEICH

t has only been a few months since 15-year-old Ciani Jerez was a high achieving AP and Honor Roll student at Flanagan High School. After complaining of a common cold, as well as an enlarged lymph node on her clavicle that was causing some discomfort, she was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma. For the next four years, Ciani will need to pay for treatments, medication and tests and her family is worried about how they will afford the expense. Her friends, family and the community of Pembroke Pines have rallied behind her with support and several fundraisers. “I cannot put into words how I feel about the overwhelming love I have received from day one,” said Ciani. “I have the greatest foundation of friends and family supporting me and I wouldn’t want it any other way. I am truly blessed and grateful beyond words for the wonderful support system that surrounds me.” While Ciani is undergoing treatment, she is attending the Florida Virtual School. She misses spending time with her friends at school and being in a class environment. Flanagan’s students and faculty have been extremely supportive. Her former English teacher, Chad Schilling, even organized a fundraiser at Anthony’s Coal Fire Pizza in Pembroke Pines that raised approximately $2,500 for the family and included a matching donation from the owner. “Over my 20 years of teaching, I have lost several students for various reasons,” said Schilling. “When Ciani started this process, I wanted to help. I men-

tioned it to her class and they wanted to help her. It shows what kind of person she is when so many students want to help. We raised some money in class for her, but I knew the family would have expenses and I wanted to do more. These kids have stepped up and shown what kind of people they are. Adults think that kids don’t get it, but they do!” At the fundraiser, there were students, teachers, friends, family, coaches and others who did not even know Ciani, but just wanted to participate. Ciani and her family could only attend for a short period, because Ciani had just completed her 3rd cycle of chemo. Schilling’s fiancé, Seylis Kaloyios, who works for Anthony’s, helped organize the event. She is in the process of organizing a second one at a location in Miramar. “Anthony’s believes in giving back to Photo (l to r): Ciani Jerez with Chad Schilling (teacher), our local communities and in bringing David Jerez (father) and Armani Jerez (brother). the family together,” said Kaloyios. “I am a mother of three and couldn’t begin to imagine how received,” said Bibiana Llerena, Ciani’s mother. “In to cope if it were one of mine going thru this situation.” the midst of this very difficult time in our lives, it is There have been other fundraisers for Ciani. great to know that there are loving caring people in Flanagan’s track team held a run-a-thon. Pembroke Pines Elementary Has Teacher of the Year Finalist

T

his month, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) will select the 2018 Teacher of the Year from among six finalists. Deborah Alexander, kindergarten teacher at Pembroke Pines Elementary School, is one of them. Alexander has been teaching for over 27 years, with most of her experience in kindergarten. The last four years have been at Pembroke Pines Elementary. Her mantra is, “Let’s make a change, one child at a time.” Over the years, she has been a team leader, teacher mentor, and peer teacher. She has also chaired and acted on various school committees. This is the fourth time she has been nominated for Teacher of the Year, but the first time she is a finalist. “I was extremely honored when I found out I was a finalist,” said Alexander. “I love what I do and I am very passionate about teaching. We have the ability to make a difference and mold the future. Making a lasting impression in a child’s life is the most satisfying experience a teacher can have.” Alexander takes her role very seriously. “Sometimes the only consistency in your student’s life is coming to school,” said Alexander. “You may be the only positive part of their day. You have the ability to help that child deal with the difficulties they may be going through. Knowledge is power! Providing a good education allows more opportunities that may have seemed unattainable.” Alexander’s classroom is always a place of encouragement. She is a caring teacher who values her relationship with each student. “Our class is a family that celebrates every success, big and small, and cheers

30

our friends on throughout the process,” said Alexander. “When my students leave my class at the end of the year, they feel empowered. The confidence they have will allow them to tackle new challenges in the coming years.” Alexander believes that parent, family, and community involvement is very important. She has taught in low social economic schools most of her career and has seen how the lack of involvement can have a tremendous impact on a child’s success. She makes a special effort to increase academic involvement through Meet and Greet, Open House and Curriculum Night. “It is our responsibility as educators to not only get parents, family, and the community involved, but to educate them as well,” said Alexander. “Often it’s not that they don’t want to help, it’s that they don’t know how. Knowing and understanding curriculum and grade level expectations allow parents to help meet the academic needs of their children. Providing resources facilitates the process.” All district schools submit a candidate in consideration for the BCPS Teacher of the Year award. The Deborah Alexander application packets are scored and the top candidate from each BCPS division is submitted for screening at the district level. A district screening committee reviews the application packets and interviews the top six candidates. The teacher with the highest combined application and interview scores is selected as Teacher of the Year. On April 5, the 2018 BCPS Teacher of the Year will be announced at the annual Caliber Awards, which recognizes all teachers nominated by their schools as Teacher of the Year.

On January 16, Martin Luther King Day, Broward College gave back to the community by partnering with the 2017 MLK Day of Service Advisory Board to support volunteer projects honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy for a national day of service. For one of the projects, students on the Broward College South Campus in Pembroke Pines participated in “Sunshine and Smiles” for Homeless Women and Children of Broward County. Broward College students, along with Sunshine’s Heart youth, prepared and delivered “Sunshine and Smiles” care packages to homeless children and women of Broward County. Students held drives to collect items for the care packages, which included basic need items, as well as educational materials and supplies. In addition, the Broward College students gave presentations to the Sunshine’s Heart youth on first year college survival skills, basic presentation tips, and effective communication skills. With funding from the Florida Legislature, Broward College and the MLK

Day of Service Advisory Board awarded $112,000 to 36 community organizations hosting volunteer projects in Broward County on MLK Day. A total of 1,166 volunteers registered for a project through the Broward College MLK Day of Service - including 120 Broward College students, 84 Broward College faculty/staff and 962 community volunteers. The awards were given to various community groups to develop service projects that positively impact the local area and address support for neighborhood projects, education, veterans, environment, economic development, health and more. “Broward College is thrilled to partner with the MLK Day of Service Advisory Board to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with community improvement projects,” said Broward College President J. David Armstrong, Jr. “Volunteerism is something we strongly encourage at Broward College, and these notable projects offer the opportunity for sustained service and ongoing community involvement throughout all of Broward County.”

arch is a very busy month for the city and we have a lot of very exciting events planned. The 19th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival in the Pines, hosted by the City of Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department and the Pembroke Pines Arts and Culture Advisory Board, is being held at the Academic Village, located at 17189 Sheridan Street. The festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 11 and 12, from 10am-5pm. It will showcase fine arts and crafts vendors from around the country, live entertainment, music, a hands-on children’s art area, demonstrations, food and much more. It’s great for all ages and I encourage everyone to attend. It’s also time to “tee off” for education at my 15th Annual Pembroke Pines Charter School Golf Tournament, which benefits the Pembroke Pines Charter School Foundation. On March 24, the golf tournament will be held at the Pembroke Lakes Golf & Tennis Center, located at 10500 Taft Street, from 10am to 6pm. This is such a fun day, complete with lunch, a raffle and a wonderful day of golf, all for a great cause.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 3/31/17) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 20 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Adriana and Kelli – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. LEGALLY SPEAKING

Do you have a thoughtful and comprehensive estate plan which includes:

Life Can Change in an Instant

T

his month’s article may be a bit more philosophical than what you are accustomed to reading in our columns. But as I began to explore topics for the March edition, a news text alerted me to a shooting at the Fort Lauderdale Airport. A later notification revealed that 5 people were killed, and others are injured. It happened in the Delta baggage claim area where, what seemed like just a very short time ago, I picked up my son and his fiance’ after they flew on a Delta flight from Minnesota. And while I do not personally know any of the victims, a tragedy so close to home, at a place we all pass through frequently, is especially difficult to deal with. The people in Terminal 2 were beginning or returning from vacation, meeting friends or loved ones, or simply spending what they thought would be another day at work. They were living their lives. And they had no idea that this would be their last day on this earth. In the last couple of years we have mourned the passing of many of our most beloved celebrities, many dying suddenly, often too young. We have also been horrified by many shocking world and national mass killings including Paris, Nice, Orlando, Istanbul, Newtown and Charleston. All of the victims of these horrific attacks left behind devastated families, friends and communities. They had no idea that their lives would end so suddenly. We can all agree that life does not always follow a plan. In the wink of an eye we might be gone. All of those details we plan to take care of tomorrow, may never happen. As an attorney specializing in will and trusts, my practice focuses on helping clients prepare for taking care of their family and assets after they are gone. I offer counsel regarding the best estate plan for their unique needs. But there are other things that you, as a caring and responsible parent or spouse, can do. Let’s start with your minor children. Have you thought about who will care for them if you are not around? What about financial support? Do you know if you have the right amount , and the right type, of life insurance for your particular family needs? What about college? How will that be paid for? Do you help support or look after elderly parents? What will happen to them should you not be around? Now think for a moment about what your final wishes for your family might be. How do you want to leave assets to your heirs? Are there charities you wish to contribute to? Who will inherit your business and real estate? There are many other questions. Perhaps the lesson to be learned from tragedy is to always try to live a good life full of kindness and gratitude, and to remember to love and cherish our families. The reality is that we do not know what the future holds. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M. in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the area of estate planning and probate and trust administration for over 30 years. Is Mediation an Option for You? BY MAYLEIDYS PORRASPITA, ESQUIRE

I

f you have problems, mediation can help. In recent times, due to the rising costs of litigation, more and more people have been moving away from litigation and use an alternate way to resolve disputes. This alternate process is called mediation. What is mediation? Mediation is a neutral voluntary process where the parties come together with a neutral third party to reach a mutually acceptable agreement. During mediation, only the parties can make a decision. The parties are in the driver seat during the mediation as opposed to a judge or jury. Who is the mediator? A mediator is a neutral person, agreed to by all the parties, who does not represent either side and does not make any decisions on the case. The mediator will do an opening statement discussing the process and then listen to each side in order to assist the parties to reach a decision all the parties agree to.

When can I mediate? One common misconception is that mediation can occur only after a lawsuit has been filed. In reality, mediation can begin at any time, even before suit is filed. During mediation, the parties don’t need to be represented by an attorney, although they can be represented if they choose to be. In fact, the parties will often save time, money and stress if they choose to mediate prior to filing suit. What can I mediate? Any issue between two or more parties can be mediated even if they don’t anticipate taking the issue before the Judge. The most common cases mediated without an attorney are: ▸▸ Landlord/Tenant disputes, such as failure to pay rent, hold over tenants or disputes over the security deposit are often handled at mediation without an attorney. ▸▸ Family Disputes, such as divorce, child support, alimony, time-sharing with the children, custody or enforcement of agreements are cases often mediated before a divorce is filed in order to avoid a very contentious divorce ▸▸ Contract disputes where one party owes the other a service or money for failure to follow a contract or provide a service, such as a contractor who has worked at a home, can be mediated before suite is filed. The Law Offices of Mayleidys Porraspita, P.A. are located in Pembroke Pines and mediate County Court cases, Circuit Civil cases, Family Law cases, Landlord/Tenant cases and monetary disputes. If you have any questions or concerns regarding mediation, please call our office at 800-492-5455. Hablamos Español.

When to File a Paternity Action BY EVAN BARON

O

ne of the areas of law which my firm handles is paternity. When a child is born to parents who are not married, a Paternity issue arises. A Paternity lawsuit can be brought by either the mother or the father of the child. The purpose of the lawsuit is usually to establish the rights of the parents and establish a child support obligation. Most people, however, do not have knowledge of the laws in this state concerning unwed parents who have a child. When they come in for a consultation they are usually quite surprised as to the state of the law. In Florida, if the parents are not married there is no presumption as to who the father is. The purpose of filing a paternity action is to establish who the father is and, as such, determine the respective rights and responsibilities of the parties. Florida Statutes state: “Any woman who is pregnant or has a child, any man who has reason to believe he is the father of a child, or any child may bring proceedings in the circuit court, in chancery, to determine the paternity of the child when paternity has not been established by law or otherwise.” As stated above, a mother can file a paternity action against the father of the child or a father can file one against the mother. If either party denies the paternity, a DNA test will be ordered to determine who the father is. Once paternity is established, the father has all of the rights and responsibilities of any father would have, which would include child support and time sharing. If the parties maintain their relationship, the issue of paternity rarely is a concern. It is only when the parties have conflict that the lack of an order of paternity can complicate matters. As an example, consider a non-married couple who were never married and had a child together. There is no issue as to who the father is. The couple is not living together, but has followed a time sharing schedule which is satisfactory to both parties. In addition, the father has been financially supporting the child. Since the issue of paternity has never been an issue in their lives, a court order was never sought. What might happen if the party’s relationship deteriorates? What if the mother suddenly denies the same time sharing to the father? What if the father suddenly stops contributing financial support for the child? These are the issues that I often see in my office. What can be done? Unfortunately, until such time as paternity is established by law the father will not have the ability to file a motion to enforce his time sharing, because there is no presumption that he is the father. On the other hand, the mother will not be able to immediately pursue her child support for the same reason. Establishing paternity early on will eliminate these potential problems. It is only when the parents wait until a crisis occurs that problems arise. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

T

he future of plastic surgery lies in stem cell science and optimization of fat grafting for soft tissue augmentation. For years, patients focused on eliminating fat. Today, fat (or adipose) cells are utilized for restoration of soft tissue volume loss that occurs with aging. Recent advancements in stem cell isolation have led to the application of stem cell enriched fat grafts. A fat transfer involves harvesting a patient’s own fat cells through a lipo-aspiration procedure, then separating the fat cells from the accompanying serum into a pure fat cell graft for transfer to the face, body, or breasts to restore soft tissue volume. Research has shown that when fat cells are enriched with stem cells to form culture expanded adipose desired stem cells (ASC), there is a higher quantity and quality of newly formed adipose and connective tissue. With this technique, the amount of fat which survives after a lipofilling procedure improves to 80 – 90% with more predictable and long lasting results. Fat cells survive in the range of 50 – 75% with present techniques requiring over correction of the soft tissue defect to ensure proper enhancement. The term stem cell, when used in advertisements for facelifts and hair transplants, is not applicable because stem cells haven’t been isolated clinically for these procedures. Using the term ‘stem cell facelifts’ is an attempt by the advertiser to mislead patients into thinking they are receiving a new cutting edge procedure. Scientifically, fat cells do contain immature stem cells as well as platelet rich plasma, which have a higher portion of stem cells than plasma alone. When fat is injected into the face, theoretically a small concentration of stem cells may be present in the newly grafted fat. For buttock enhancement, autologous fat transfer procedure has become the procedure of choice to improve size, shape, and lifting of the buttocks. In recent years, fat grafts have been used in breast reconstruction procedures, both for post-mastectomy reconstruction and post breast augmentation contour irregularities. Autologous fat grafting procedures are being utilized for primary breast augmentation more often for women who desire a small increase in breast size and fullness. The technique is still being studied to determine its long-term effects, including issues with mammography and subsequent breast cancer detection. The techniques for maximizing results in fat transfer have evolved over the past several years. With ongoing research and clinical application, fat will be used universally for soft tissue augmentation and become the gold standard for such procedures. REAL ESTATE

$

BY PATRICK SIMM

W

ith an abundance of online real estate sites offering recent sales, comparables, and trends, people often ask why potential home sellers need a Realtor when selling their homes. Selling one’s home is a highly emotional and a major financial responsibility that takes time, knowledge of the local real estate market, prolific marketing and great negotiating skills. While selling a home by yourself can save you a substantial amount of money, it could end up costing more than the Realtor’s commission by the time the transaction is complete. Selling a home by yourself involves continuously accommodating potential buyers, whether they are qualified or not, setting appointments, and negotiating the sale that can lead to uncomfortable situations and unnecessary stress to the potential home seller. An experienced Real Estate agent is educated in the sales process. He/she not only handles all of this for you, but also knows the contract, disclosures and, most importantly, the local real estate laws. What simply amazes me is the fact that sellers who take on the task of selling their home on “For Sale by Owner” focus on the commission savings as their number one priority. Seller liability is never a priority until it becomes an issue. Unbeknownst to them is that the buyers that gravitate towards “For Sale by Owners” also believe that they can save money on the home by not having an agent in the transaction. They normally make their offers accordingly, focused on simply negotiating the seller potential commission savings downwards in their favor. Per the most recent statistics from the National Association of Realtors, using a listing agent nets sellers a whopping 22% more on average than they get by selling by themselves. Added to this, more than 80% of buyers purchased their home through a real estate agent. Not hiring an agent to do what they do best could cause you to lose 80% of your buyer pool. Eliminating most of your buyers will decrease your selling price and end up costing your money. The truth of the matter is that top listing agents sell homes day in and day out, while most homeowners sell their homes once every eight to ten years. While there are certain people that are qualified to sell their houses on their own, the majority are not. The home selling process is not as simple as many people make it out to be. In my opinion, entering my 17th year of real estate and engaging in thousands of real estate transactions, it’s safer to have a professional on your side. Before you try to sell a home by yourself, I challenge you to consider if it’s really worth the time it will take you to fully understand the sales process and how much money, if any, that you will actually save by doing it yourself. Dogosterone Therapy: Quality of Life Treatment for Geriatric Dogs BY DAVID S. BIEBER, DVM

How It Works

Spayed and neutered dogs have a testosterone level of basically zero (<0.1mg/ml). We have found that as dogs get older, their muscle tone and bone density decreases, leading to one of the diseases

mentioned above. By using Dogosterone Therapy, we increase the testosterone level to normal levels, giving dogs an increase in muscle tone and bone density, which alleviates and/or helps a great deal in these illnesses. It gives the dogs being treated a much better quality of life in their later years.

How It All Started

It was the state of my own chocolate Labrador, Bruno, which prompted me to investigate the living conditions of geriatric dogs. In 2008, Bruno was 11 years old and became paralyzed in both rear legs due to chronic intervertebral disk disease, resulting in both of his cervical (neck) and lumbar (lower back) disk herniations. My family and I decided to get a wheel chair for Bruno. Since Bruno was neutered, I thought he had no muscle tone or bone density. At that point, I was desperate and decided to try Dogosterone Treatment on Bruno Bieber Bruno. Five months later, he was walking all by himself. He continued to walk on his own for another four years, until he naturally died of chronic renal failure.

SECTION ASK THE EXPERT HEAD

BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA

F

oot and ankle injuries are very common in sports or in general activities of daily living. Many structures including bone, ligament, cartilage and joint lining may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries may occur during the teenage years that may manifest themselves later on. These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time usually to the degree of joint injury. With weightbearing, the joint usually loosens and the person is able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive activity. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist. When these injuries are unresponsive to conservative treatment which may include orthotics, medication or rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle. A miniature camera is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on a television screen. The joint is visualized and small instruments are introduced into the joint to clean out and repair the damage. Fragments of bone and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion. Arthroscopic surgery is used to treat conditions such as chronic join pain and swelling, arthritis and bone spurs, loose bone and cartilage fragments, stiff, scarred joints, and ankle fractures that have not completely recovered. Its advantages include faster recovery, less pain and swelling, avoids large incisions, low risk of infection, outpatient procedures, and quicker return to activities. Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail, arthroscopic surgery should be considered. The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition. However, once treated arthroscopically a full return to activity may be possible. Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. His partners are Dr. Robert Sheinberg, Dr. Al DeSimone, Dr. Fernando Moya, Dr. Alexander Bertot, Dr. Mark Fishman, Dr. David Shenassa, Dr. Nathan Vela and Dr. Michael Cohen. The South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine in Weston is located at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, (954) 389-5900 and in Pembroke Pines at 17842 NW 2nd Street, (954) 430-9901. March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month

Importance of Colon Cancer Screening Colon cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the United States. But how much do you really know about colon cancer? Colon Brenda Jimenez, MD cancer is one of few diseases where benign tissue – in this case, polyps – actually turns deadly. Removing nonmalignant polyps during a colonoscopy procedure may prevent colon cancer from developing. Therefore, preventing colon cancer may be easier than you think.

Prevention and Detection

You can help avoid colon cancer just by getting screened. “If we detect precancerous polyps during a colonoscopy, we can remove them at the same time, before they turn into cancer,” says Brenda Jimenez, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida gastroenterologist. That’s one reason colon cancer is so preventable. “It takes approximately 10 years for a small colon polyp to become cancerous,” she adds.

Other tests for colon cancer include sigmoidoscopy, fecal occult blood test and CT colonoscopy. However, if they show any abnormality, a colonoscopy is needed.

Who is at risk of colon cancer? Everyone is at risk of developing colon cancer. Over 75% of patients who are diagnosed have had no identifiable risk factors. People at increased risk include those with a strong family history of the disease, an inherited tendency to form polyps, a long history of ulcerative colitis. These patients are at moderate to high risk. The risk is particularly strong if the first degree relative with cancer was less than age 60. However, they are in the minority. The disease occurs most often in those who least expect it. Other common risk factors are; age, obesity, physical inactivity, diet, alcohol and tobacco use.

Symptoms of colon cancer include a change in bowel habits, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding or anemia. Patients with symptoms should have an examination of the whole colon called colonoscopy. People with no symptoms should be screened for colorectal cancer starting at age 50.

Are there symptoms?

According to the American Cancer Society, colon polyps often don’t cause any symptoms, particularly in the early stages. That’s why screening is so important. You may have polyps and not know it. The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommends regular colon cancer screenings for everyone age 50 and older, age 45 or older if AfricanAmerican. Your doctor may recommend earlier screenings if you have a family history or other high risk of colon polyps or cancer. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Jimenez, call 866.303.8464 or visit us online at clevelandclinicflorida.org/coloncancer.

Take a free colon cancer risk assessment online. Screening for colon cancer can save lives, but only if people get tested. Find out your risk for developing colon cancer by taking our free online risk assessment at clevelandclinicflorida.org/coloncancer.

BRIGHT STEPS FORWARD Founded in 2005 to help families in need, Bright Steps Forward, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization with the mission to ensure that ALL children in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties with neurological or developmental disorders have access to top quality special needs education and therapeutic interventions so they may achieve their maximum potential. Bright Steps Forward operates a fully accredited therapeutic learning center for children with special needs that serves children from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Unlike public school classrooms, the class sizes in our learning centers are small and children are grouped according to their needs. Bright Steps Forward’s academic program follows the Sunshine State Standards and we include other programs to enrich the curriculum. What sets our therapeutic learning centers apart from other special needs programs is our ability to provide intensive ABA, PT, OT and speech therapies during or after the tutoring sessions so that each child can blossom socially, physically as well as cognitively.
