DABVLM, DO, RPVI, FSVM Dr. Susan Fox is an expert in vein and vascular diagnosis and treatment. She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Vascular Medicine, and Phlebology (the treatment of veins). SPECIALIZING IN VARICOSE VEIN TREATMENT ENDOVENOUS LASER ABLATION (EVLA/EVLT)
Endovenous Laser Ablation is one of the most effective treatments for large varicose veins with a 98–100 percent success rate. It involves inserting a thin laser fiber through the affected vein; there are no incisions and thus leaves no scars. Tiny pulses of laser energy are delivered as the fiber is pulled through the vein, gently heating it and causing it to collapse and seal shut. The insufficient veins become shrunken scars that fade over time. These procedures take less than a 30-minutes with little to no downtime afterward.

Varithena® is ideal for smaller, less obtrusive veins. It uses foam sclerotherapy and is a safe and effective vein removal technique. During traditional sclerotherapy, a solution is injected directly into the affected veins. While you may feel a pinch at the injection site, foam sclerotherapy isn’t painful. We perform it under ultrasound guidance and direct the foam into the problematic veins watching everything along the way. The person has no downtime, usually minimal to no pain, and only needs to stay active and wear a compression hose afterward.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy is a surgical approach to removing larger and more troublesome veins. It is often an in-office procedure that requires a local anesthetic. The veins are teased out through the tiny holes without causing any significant scarring. Most people return to normal activities immediately afterward without much recovery time.

Spider Veins Removal is deemed cosmetic even though they may cause symptoms. There are a couple of treatment options. We can use sclerotherapy, where a solution is injected into the vein with a tiny needle. The vein lining gets irritated and gradually seals shut, closing the vein over several weeks. It may take several sessions for all of the veins to go away. There is also a cutaneous laser option if you prefer. The laser uses light pulses to heat the vein and scar them shut. For the tiny and unsightly facial veins or tiny red veins, we also have a machine called the VeinGogh. It uses energy microbursts to close tiny veins without any downtime or scarring. This procedure often seals the small veins over a few days to weeks and can be done in a few sessions with excellent results.

embroke Pines Charter High School Seniors and Southwest Focal Point (SWFP) Senior Citizens put their spelling proficiency to the test and enjoyed a friendly competition during the Sixth Annual “Seniors vs Seniors” Spelling Bee held in the main hall at The Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus. This year’s winner, Lily Mazurek, won First Place by spelling the word “bullion” correctly. The Second and Third places and prizes
were awarded to Jullian Villarta and Carol Matthews. The champion was presented with both a certificate of recognition and a cash prize of $50. The Second Place winner received $30, and the Third Place finisher received $20. Lastly, the 2022 Winners will get their names inscribed on a perpetual cup trophy and bragging rights for the calendar year.

to Build a Skate Park

esident skate enthusiasts, get ready! The City of Miramar has listened and has allocated $404,080.00 to fund the skate park project. Nestled in the southwest corner of Miramar Regional Park, adjacent to the basketball courts, the grand venture will boast a concrete structure between 3,200 and 5,000 square feet. The park will also be easily accessible from 172nd Avenue sidewalk entrances. So many residents and anxiously awaiting the completion, but Commissioner Alexandra Davis is super excited about the project and has been an advocate for getting it approved and built. “It’s no secret that kids involved in sports don’t have the time to get into trouble, but it turns out you don’t have to be dragging them to soccer or baseball. Activities you might not expect, like skateboarding and a skatepark gives them a place to do just this,” explained Commissioner Davis. The park will be constructed of cast-in-place concrete which is known for its high level of 22 / March 2022 / OurCityMedia.com
strength. The outdoor park will feature many structural attractions including a small transition bowl pocket and small transition quarter pipes and hips. Additionally, it will have banks, banked hips, and bank to ledge with metal handrails along with down ledges known as “Hubba ledges” for those skateboard aficionados, and so much more. These elongated block edges give skaters a versatile obstacle to do slides or grind tricks on. The expert-appointed design will allow up to 10 rollerbladers, skateboarders, or scooters to utilize the space simultaneously. Skateboards, in-line skates, rollerblades, and scooters are all welcome. The projected date of completion is the Summer of 2022. Once completed, the skatepark will be open 7 days a week from park opening till sunset. It will be strongly recommended that all skaters wear helmets and pads for safety.

Elizabeth opened A World of Knowledge Learning Center, a preschool in Pembroke Pines, 18 years ago. The school took a different approach than others: she wanted to help young children learn and appreciate the world that surrounds them while learning their ABCs. The focus was to teach children that we are all the same regardless of where we come from or what we look like, and we all have talents that are unique to us. As the owner, Elizabeth wanted to bring something different and unique to the community and something that would impact students for life. Today, she also oversees Apple Tree Montessori and Greentree Prep Charter K-8, with the same passion and philosophy as when she first started this journey 18 years ago. She pursued a Master’s in Education and began plans to open a learning center that would center around multicultural awareness. The goal was to help young children appreciate each other’s differences with compassion for one another, as they played and learned together in a classroom setting. She also created an accelerated learning program that is unique to A World of Knowledge. This program sets them apart by bringing the world to their students. With her incredible and experienced staff, this proved to be successful for over 98% of her students, who entered kindergarten reading. The school has earned one of the highest VPK scores in the state of Florida, since its inception.
Advice to Young People Beginning a Career in Early Childhood Education
Never give up! If you have a dream, work hard to achieve it! It took two years of planning and preparation before my vision came to fruition, but 18 years later, I am blessed with A World of Knowledge Learning Center, Apple Tree Montessori, and Greentree Prep Charter School K-8 center. Being able to provide various methods of education to children brings me much joy! I know our staff members teach with great enthusiasm and desire to help students appreciate themselves and the world that surrounds them while getting a higher education.

I’m grateful that our parents shared their experiences with their friends and because of that great response, it gave us the opportunity to establish Greentree Prep Charter K-8 center, which follows the same advanced curriculum philosophy as A World of Knowledge. A few years later, I purchased Apple Tree Montessori, giving me the opportunity to offer even more diversity in learning styles to our students. We don’t teach our students in the traditional way; we teach through interactive activities, and with love, compassion, and care. VICKIE CARTWRIGHT CHOSEN TO LEAD BROWARD SCHOOLS PERMANENTLY

roward County Public Schools Interim Superintendent Vickie Cartwright will get the full-time job. The former Orange County school administrator was chosen by the Broward County School Board after an 8-1 vote in her favor. Lori Alhadeff was the only dissenting vote at a School Board Meeting on February 9. Cartwright has been the interim superintendent since her predecessor, Robert Runcie resigned from the role last year. She was chosen despite initially not being allowed to even apply for the job. The interim superintendent was initially not supposed to be eligible for the full-time role, but Cartwright gained the support of board members and, importantly, The Broward Teachers Union. “In the six months that she has served as interim superintendent, she has proven to be an intelligent and excellent leader with an ability to listen to and work with all constituencies,” said Teachers Union President Anna Fusco in a prepared statement. “She quickly gained a keen understanding of the district’s challenges and opportunities. I look forward to continuing

the positive and fruitful relationship we have created and to Dr. Cartwright’s long tenure as the leader of Broward County Public Schools.” The school board had narrowed the search to two finalists. Along with Cartwright was retired Air Force Colonel Michael Gaal. Gaal has held a number of leadership positions in large schools systems after his military service. He was never a teacher, however. Some board members pointed to this fact as a reason to prefer Cartwright. “The beginning of my career is one that is truly based on relationships and the value of understanding the importance in ensuring that we put students first,” Cartwright told the board. “During my 7th-grade year, unfortunately, my family did become homeless.” “I am humbled. I am honored,” Cartwright said after the vote, “One of my initial interests at this point is really going out and recruiting the best-qualified candidates for those (key) positions.” Alhadeff explained the reasoning for her vote for Gaal, saying, “he was the stronger leader

After completing his degree in education, at the age of 20, he relocated to Florida where he became a high school teacher in Miramar. He taught algebra and geometry for 10 years and completed his master’s degree in educational leadership.
Ernest soon had a change of heart and wanted to serve his community in a different way. Seven years ago, he became a Miramar police officer and later a detective. Det. Woods has a passion for following the paper trail in fraud cases. One of those cases led to the dismantling of a nationwide, multimillion-dollar fraud scheme. Our 2018 Officer of the Year enjoys camping and going to the beach with his wife and children. Melanie Peluso was born in South Florida and raised in Miramar. The daughter of a retired Miramar homicide detective, Melanie always loved the profession and pursued a degree in criminal justice and crime scene investigations. After volunteering with the department, she was hired as a crime scene technician in 2007. From burglaries to homicides, Peluso photographed, collected, and analyzed forensic evidence to assist detectives in their investigations. In 2014, the health enthusiast decided to follow in her father’s footsteps and become
a police officer. After years of dedication and hard work, she was honored to have the man who inspired her career - her own father - pin her detective badge. Detective Peluso’s ultimate goal is to one day become a homicide detective. Damian Castellanos is a first generation CubanAmerican. He holds a bachelor’s in political science and proudly served five years in the U.S. Navy. As a corpsman medic, he specialized in combat, aviation, and search and rescue medicine. He supervised teams that provided medical care for military aviators and responded to dozens of airplane crashes. Damian also volunteered for two deployments, prior to joining Miramar PD three years ago. His triaging skills have proven to be a lifesaving asset in responding to incidents with injured victims, before fire-rescue even arrives. Officer Castellanos is a field training officer, a Police Explorer advisor, and a member of our Hostage Negotiations and Field Force teams. A devoted husband and father, he enjoys weightlif ting and reading books on philosophy. Due to the number of lives saved by Officer Damian Castellanos, he has been named Miramar Police Department’s 2021 Officer of the Year.

While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems.

MIRAMAR UPDATE By Mayor Wayne M. Messam

efore I get into this month’s column, I would like to say, Thank You! I’m grateful for the trust you have placed in me to lead our city as Mayor. This month is my 11th year of service, being initially elected as a City Commissioner in 2011. When the voters of our city elected me to be Mayor in 2015, my number one priority was to continue the progress and lay the foundation and infrastructure for the next 30 years. Well, property values continue to go up, corporations with high-paying jobs continue to choose Miramar even during the pandemic, we’ve made a number of improvements to the infrastructure in Historic Miramar with plans for so much more. The past eleven years have been a blessing and together we will continue our progress. So Thank You!
In the immediate future, I have made several proposals that will ensure Miramar’s prosperity, relevance, and sustainability. They include infrastructure investments that prepare us for the
advancements in transportation infrastructure, economic development, continued redevelopment of Historic Miramar, Workforce Development, and Innovation. I will explain further in my upcoming newsletter. In the meantime, do know these proposals include an Innovation Village, Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Master Plan, and Roadway Improvements. Over the past 11 years, residents have come to know me as a person who focuses on the matters that create jobs, youth development, infrastructure improvements, and economic development. Leading a city in partnership with our residents requires collaboration and vision. When we look at the 2013 Revenue Bond, it was highly criticized by those who failed to have a forward outlook on investing in ourselves despite a tough economic climate. Today, because of that bold move back in 2013, the city has 2 new police facilities, a new fire station, a new water treatment plant, several renovated parks, and improved stormwater drainage in Historic Miramar.
I remind us of our journey because I am asking all residents to join me again in 2022 as I push forward to make the case on why Miramar should prepare for the future now. That future is one that will include electric and autonomous vehicles making up 40% of vehicles by 2030. A future that will need a workforce that has the critical skills needed by emerging technologies. Can you imagine Miramar being the Venture Capital of South Florida or even our own cryptocurrency? The freestanding, 121,000+ sq. ft. facility will consolidate resources and maximize collaboration between high-level specialists at what is already one of only five Cancer Centers of Excellence in Florida. With this centralized location, adjacent to the campus of Memorial Hospital West near the corner of Pines Boulevard and Flamingo Road, Memorial Cancer Institute cements its place as a home for world-class treatment, research, and the highest quality patient and family-centered care to the more than 5,200 new patients that come for life-saving treatment each year. The new, four-story Memorial Cancer Institute will house radiation oncology, a breast center, a hematology-oncology clinic, the Moffitt Malignant Hematology and Cellular Therapy Clinic, and an infusion clinic. It will also feature an image recovery area, conference center, physician offices, private infusion suites, a rooftop garden, and meditation room. We’re very proud to have this facility in our city. This month the City of Pembroke Pines recognizes Women’s History Month to honor all women – commemorating and encouraging the study, observance and celebration of the vital role of women in American history.
