Celebrating Women’s Enduring Legacy
As we celebrate Women’s History Month this March, we must recognize and honor the contributions of women who have significantly impacted our community, our country, and the world. From political leaders to activists, artists, and entrepreneurs, women have played a crucial role in shaping our society and paving the way for future generations.
In Broward County, we are fortunate to have a rich history of women who have made a difference in a variety of fields. For example, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, an environmentalist and journalist, fought to protect the Everglades and raise awareness about the importance of conservation. Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune was a local civil rights leader who founded a school for African American girls and later served as an advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
In addition to these trailblazers, countless women in our community make a difference daily. From teachers and healthcare workers to small business owners and volunteers, women play a vital role in every aspect of our society. This month, we want to celebrate their achievements and recognize the challenges they have overcome to get to where they are today.
Check out the Exceptional Women of Broward section of this month’s magazine. We profile some of the community’s extraordinary women who are impacting the lives of people in our community daily.
Of course, there is still much work to be done to achieve gender equality and ensure that all women have access to the same opportunities and resources. But by acknowledging the contributions of women in our community and beyond, we can inspire future generations of girls and women to pursue their goals and dreams.
Here’s to building a brighter, more inclusive future for all!

Transform Your Space: Simplified Window Solutions!
Shade Above Window Fashions provides a unique experience for consumers shopping for window coverings. Their interactive showroom features more than 100 different shades and blinds. Andrew Abramson, president of A Shade Above Window Fashions, and his family have been in the window covering industry for more than 50 years. This year, A Shade Above is celebrating its 40th anniversary in South Florida. Andrew recently answered some questions about his business and what differentiates it from the competition.
Please describe your showroom.
If you are in the market for shades or blinds, shopping in our showroom is an experience. When my father, Bruce, started A Shade Above in 1984, he had a vision of a showroom-based shades and blinds company where customers could see full-size, interactive displays of all the latest products on the market.
In 2000, our Davie showroom was selected as the nation’s first Hunter Douglas Window Fashions Gallery. Last year, we did a complete showroom renovation. Our Hunter Douglas Gallery 3.0 is state-of-the-art, and we also showcase other top national and international brands. We’ve treated windows in thousands of
Pembroke Pines homes, and over multiple generations. Some of our newer customers are the children or even grandchildren of our past customers.
What products do you offer?
We offer many of the top products on the market, including plantation shutters, roller and outdoor shades, zebra, banded and Roman shades, horizontal and vertical blinds, drapery, Luminette, Silhouette, Pirouette and PowerView, and Somfy automation. Most of our products can be motorized and programmed to work with a voice assistant like Alexa. You can even pre-set your shades to open and close at specific times of day.
What products are currently trending in the window covering industry?
Plantation shutters remain one of our most popular products. They are a timeless window treatment that is always in style. If you are looking for a decorative statement, plantation shutters provide trim work around your window, including a new contemporary frame. Depending on which shutter you choose, they can complement any decor. Our showroom features a wide variety of shutters, including some modern wide-louvered shutters.
What other trends can customers spot in your showroom?
If you are looking for a soft, contemporary look, banded shades, also known as zebra shades, are an ideal product that can work in any room. Banded shades alternate sheer and solid fabric, allowing a single shade to transition from open to close. It’s a perfect shade for those who want a view but also light control and privacy. It’s one of the most popular products we’ve ever carried. We are currently offering a special for our 40th anniversary with a free upgrade to cordless Banded shades, which normally cost an extra $100 per shade.
Do you have room darkening products?
We’re always adding to our collection of blackout shades and we have interactive displays that showcase different degrees of darkness in more than 20 products. We offer stylish shades that provide nearly total blackout in bedrooms and media rooms. Customers love our Duo Shades — during the day a transparent shade gives you a view of the outside while maintaining privacy and keeping out the heat. At night the blackout shade keeps the room private while maintaining darkness when the sun rises. It’s similar to what you’d find in many contemporary hotel rooms.
Are your shades energy efficient?
All of our shades and blinds will help reduce heat. But there’s nothing more energy efficient than our honeycomb shades. Many of these shades qualify for a new federal tax rebate and you can receive up to $1,200 back after purchase.
Andrew Abramson, PresidentWhat’s available for patios and other outdoor spaces?
Our patio sun shades allow you to relax in your yard without melting in the sun. These shades can be operated manually with a cable guide for wind resistance, or the shades can be motorized on a track. In addition to reducing the heat, our outdoor sun shades keep much of the rain off your patio. We also have retractable patio screens that look like traditional mesh screens on a screened-in patio – they keep out the bugs but can also be raised when you want to let in the open air and hide your screens.
With so many choices, how do you help customers make a decision?
When customers visit our showroom, they receive a tour of the newest shades and blinds available today. We recognize that it can be difficult to make decisions from small samples. That’s why our business model is special. Our full-size displays are available for the customer to view and operate as they will appear in their home. Our employees have years of experience in the window covering industry, so they can answer personalized questions that will help customers make the best decisions tailored to their needs.
What’s the best way for customers to contact you?
To schedule a showroom consultation, visit our website AShadeAboveFlorida.com or call or text us at 954-434-4774. Our full-service package includes professional measuring, installation and an in-home service warranty. We also offer self-service packages for do-it-yourselfers.

Impingement Syndromes in Dancers
Pain in the front or back of the ankle can occur from a dancer standing “en point” or “demi point.” Pain behind the ankle is due to a bone prominence that pinches the soft tissue or due to a fractured bone or cartilage in the back of the ankle (Os Trigonum). A deep pain in the back of the ankle is felt and is made worse if the foot points down.
Treatment includes rest, physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medication. If the pain does not improve, a Cortisone injection is given to decrease inflammation and scar tissue. Unresolved pain may be treated surgically, thus allowing a full return to dance. The back of the ankle is cleaned out and a small piece of bone may be removed with arthroscopic surgery to allow the dancer to return to full activity. Rarely an open procedure is needed.
Pain in the front of the ankle is usually caused by thickening of the ankle joint lining and can cause pain while moving the leg forward on the foot. This impingement syndrome is
By Dr. John Goodnerusually associated with an ankle ligament injury and can become very painful, especially the first thing in the morning when getting out of bed to walk or after sitting for a short period of time and getting up to walk. The inflammation and soreness usually lessen with activity but return later on in the day. Physical therapy and a short course of anti-inflammatory medication may be necessary to reduce the inflammation in the ankle joint.
If that does not improve, a Fluoroscopic Guided Cortisone injection may be necessary to reduce the thickening of the soft tissue. If conservative measures fail, a Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection can be given into the joint to improve healing potential. In some cases, the impingement in the front part of the ankle does not improve and arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to completely regain the ankle mobility without discomfort.
In some cases, a small spur is present on the front part of the lower leg bone. This can cause chronic pain and stiffness in the ankle. If present, arthroscopic removal of the bone spur is also performed to allow the dancer to resume activity.
Prognosis is excellent with full return to dancing with proper treatment.
▸ Dr. John Goodner is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the South Florida Foot & Ankle Sports Institute and specializes in sports medicine foot and ankle injuries, foot and ankle arthroscopy, lower extremity trauma, and lower extremity deformities in infants, children, teens and adults.
Pioneering a Path From the Lazy B to the Supreme Court
Agirl named Sandra was born in 1930 and grew up on a vast cattle ranch on the ArizonaNew Mexico border called the Lazy B Ranch. Growing up in a sparsely populated area meant Sandra didn’t attend a traditional school
as a young child. Her mother provided all of her early childhood education. Like her brother Allen, Sandra developed a strong work ethic at a very young age while working on the ranch.
The young girl was quite precocious. By the time she was ten, Sandra had read just about every book on the ranch. Her parents decided to send her to live with her grandmother in El Paso to attend the Radford School for Girls. Sandra’s work ethic and passion for learning helped her excel and gain admission to Standford University. The young woman graduated with honors and decided to stay at Stanford for law school. She graduated from Law School at the top of her
class in 1952.
Despite her academic achievements, Sandra faced significant barriers to employment in the legal profession solely because of her gender. Many law firms were reluctant to hire women as lawyers at the time. Her first job after law school was as a deputy county attorney in San Mateo, California, a position she obtained only after initially offering to work without pay to prove her capabilities.
After marrying a Stanford classmate, Sandra moved to Arizona, where her career took off. She worked as an assistant attorney general before pursuing politics in the Arizona state senate, where she became the first woman to hold the position
of Majority Leader in any state senate.
On July 7, 1981, Ronald Reagan appointed Sandra Day O’Connor as the first woman on the United States Supreme Court. Justice O’Connor often relied on her unique upbringing when deciding cases. Her judicial philosophy was not easily classified along the conventional conservative-liberal spectrum. She was frequently the Justice who found the moderate “middle” on many controversial issues.
Sandra Day O’Connor died in December 2023. We lost a pioneering woman who blazed a trail that so many now follow. Her ashes are buried on a peaceful hilltop at the Lazy B Ranch where she grew up.

Dear Friends and Neighbors, I'm Glenn Theobald, and I'm running for District 3 Commissioner. As a lifelong public servant, not a politician, I aim to be the servant leader you deserve in city hall.
Having resided in Pembroke Pines for over 30 years with my wife, Kim, and our four children, who attended local schools and participated in community sports, I'm deeply rooted in this community. My 36 years in law enforcement, including significant roles at the Miami-Dade Police Department and Martin County Sheriff's Office, have equipped me with extensive experience in leadership, legal matters, and public safety.
My career highlights include over 100 awards and commendations, legislative achievements in Florida and at the federal level, and leading the Miami-Dade Mortgage Fraud Task Force. As a University of Miami Law School graduate, I've dedicated myself to public service, applying my education to effect real change.
Retiring in 2020, I've stayed active, providing pro bono legal services and participating in local organizations like the Miramar/
Pembroke Pines Kiwanis Club and Chamber of Commerce. Appointed to the Budget Counsel in 2023, I'm committed to improving our city.
My top priority is public safety, ensuring a fully staffed, well-funded Police and Fire Department to protect our residents. I'm also focused on fiscal responsibility, property tax reduction, and preventing a garbage incinerator in Pembroke Pines while reinstating recycling.
I pledge to be a responsive and approachable commissioner. My team and I have engaged with over 9,000 residents in District 3, demonstrating my commitment to listening and acting on your concerns. I seek no financial gain from this position, planning to donate half of my salary to charity and use the rest for tax obligations.
Endorsed by our brave first responders, I am honored and ready to collaborate with them for a safer, better Pembroke Pines. As your commissioner, I promise to be the servant leader you deserve, voicing your needs and aspirations in city hall.
Together, let's work towards a thriving Pembroke Pines!

OWNER & DIRECTOR
A WORLD OF KNOWLEDGE LEARNING CENTER
GREENTREE PREP CHARTER SCHOOL
APPLE TREE MONTESSORI
About Elizabeth
Elizabeth opened A World of Knowledge Learning Center, a preschool in Pembroke Pines, 20 years ago. The school took a different approach than others: she wanted to help young children learn and appreciate the world that surrounds them while learning their ABCs. The focus was to teach children that we are all the same regardless of where we come from or what we look like, and we all have talents that are unique to us. Taking these young learners around the world to learn about the different cultures that make up our communities became an immediate success with many of our parents. As the owner, Elizabeth wanted to bring something different and unique to the community and something that would impact students for life.
Because of the success of the early learning center, Elizabeth opened Greentree Prep Charter K-8, offering the same advanced learning philosophy to over 300 students and Apple Tree Montessori School. These three schools embody her passion and philosophy. Elizabeth’s passion for what she does, as an educator, administrator, and parent, is what has helped her achieve her success. “As a manager in the airline industry, I was able to see firsthand the beauty that each country and culture has to offer,” said Elizabeth, “After I became a mom, I wanted to bring the world to my children.”
What Makes Elizabeth’s Schools Unique
Elizabeth has established a family of schools based on the foundations layed at A World of Knowledge. Greentree Prep Charter is a high performing school, teaching students in a gifted environment. Students score high in state assessments, and the school just celebrated 10 years of academic excellence. She created a unique accelerated learning program that is unmatched in South Florida. This program sets the schools apart by bringing the world to their students. With her incredible and experienced staff, this proved to be successful for over 98% of AWOK students who entered kindergarten reading and for Greentree Prep students entering high school on an honors track.
What Contributed to Elizabeth’s Success?
Students are not taught in the traditional way at Elizabeth’s schools. They learn through interactive activities and with love, compassion, and care. Dedicated educators across three schools embody this philosophy, demonstrating commitment through exceptional efforts. Their belief in and support for the educational model contribute to the schools’ growth and recognition at both community and state levels.

I make it a point to continuously evolve and acquire new knowledge every day, ensuring that I am well-prepared to guide my team and remain pertinent within our sector, thereby delivering service of the highest caliber. Resilience in the face of adversity has been my cornerstone. Maintaining focus on one’s objectives, aspirations, or dreams and persevering regardless of the hurdles encountered is crucial. It’s important to keep a balanced lifestyle, recognizing that each day only has 24 hours and being mindful of what can realistically be accomplished within this time frame.
Words to Live By
“The biggest investment you can make is the one to yourself. Leadership is a journey of self-reflection and transformation. Life will bring different experiences, but you will either win or learn. Leadership is truly who you become on the journey and inspiring others to do the same.”
After 28 years of serving the great City of Pembroke Pines in various positions, my term as a long-standing Mayor will come to an end as I have chosen to retire. I would like to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for the privilege and honor of having served you throughout these many years in the capacity as a Commissioner, Vice Mayor, and Mayor. This truly is a bittersweet goodbye. However, I am not going anywhere, and hope that when you see me throughout the community, you’ll come up to me to say hi. The City of Pembroke Pines is a family to me, and I will forever be grateful for having been a part of this city and its growth and diversity.
We live in such a vibrant city. This month, there are many events planned and it’s also the perfect Springtime to enjoy our outdoors and parks located throughout the city.
A favorite activity for many families is the Pembroke Pines Annual Egg Hunts which will take place on Saturday, March 30, 2024. Gates will open at 9:30 am and the hunts begin at 10 am at two locations: Pines Recreation Center, 7400 Pines Boulevard, and Pembroke Shores Park, 501 SW 172nd Avenue. Children are encouraged to hop in early to get a great spot in line.
This is a free event for ages 12 and under that includes the egg hunt, face painting, bounce houses and a visit from Peter Rabbit. Over 26,000 eggs at each location (52,000 in total) will be waiting for discovery. At both locations the fields will be divided by age. Please note that children should bring their baskets to collect the eggs. For more information on this event or any future events, please visit www.ppines.com or call 954-392-2116.
Our annual Mayor’s Golf Tournament is also coming up. I must say that I am humbled by the Commissioners’ unanimous request for a resolution to permanently name this event the “Honorable Mayor Frank C. Ortis Golf Tournament.” This is a very special event for me as it benefits the Pembroke Pines Charter Schools. It will be held on March 22, 2024 at the Pembroke Lakes Country Club, located at 10500 Taft Street. To ensure your place and to get more information, please email Carol Campisi at ccampisi@ppines.com.
And just a quick reminder that Daylight Saving time begins at 2 am on Sunday, March 10, 2024. This is the time we “spring forward” and set clocks ahead one hour. It’s also a good time to stay safe by replacing the batteries in your smoke alarms.
This is my last “letter” as Mayor to you and so I would once again like to take this moment to thank everyone for their support and for the opportunity to serve this strong and caring community.
Greetings From Your Chamber President!
By Patty ArcherThanks Again! We are so proud that the Miramar Pembroke Pines Regional Chamber of Commerce was chosen as Our City’s Best Organization in Miramar! We are humbled to serve our business community and ensure that our local economy is healthy for our businesses to grow and thrive. Remember that as our neighbor, you are welcome at any of our Ribbon Cutting celebrations as we help welcome new businesses to Miramar and Pembroke Pines.
Ribbon Cuttings are a great opportunity to meet local business leaders, as well as elected officials and other community leaders. Showing support for the business community is integral to fostering a sense of overall community pride and encouraging businesses to support each other. Ribbon Cutting events are also great opportunities to gain insight into new businesses, products or services, and industries. The general public is always welcome to attend Ribbon Cuttings for any new business - the more the merrier to get the word out!
Small businesses are truly the backbone of a local economy, and more of each dollar spent locally stays in the community when it's spent at a small business. Supporting local small businesses can also be in the form of following and liking them on social media or leaving them an online review to help encourage others to try out a new business in town.
We hope you are planning to celebrate with us at our 18th annual A Sip of Wine, A Taste of Heaven event on March 16th at the Miramar Amphitheater where we will showcase the best restaurants, caterers and bakeries that South Broward has to offer. Enjoy a VIP lounge area, live entertainment, mobile cigar lounge, coffee station, and a vast selection of food, dessert, wine and cocktail tastings.
