When you fly now, you know it’s extra for everything — that airfare only pretends to be low.
But when a Senior Community offers luxury living for a seemingly-attractive monthly rent, you don’t expect to be Nickel-and-Dimed.
That’s why you’ll never see Nickel-and-Diming at The Palace. Here your monthly rent covers almost everything. Including all your meals, housekeeping, personal trainers, maintenance, and even Happy Hours with drinks and hors d’oeuvres.
You won’t see a long list of extra charges. At The Palace, the price is the price.
Remember when everything about flying was to make you feel special?
That’s how living at The Palace feels today. Call or visit soon to see for yourself.

June Joy: Embracing Sunshine, Pride, & Milestones
Welcome to June, the month that ushers in the vibrant South Florida summer! As the heat and humidity rise, we invite you to embrace the essence of our region. Don’t forget your sunscreen and a refreshing beverage as you venture outdoors. With our winter visitors bidding adieu, let’s relish the less crowded conditions and bask in the beauty of our community.
June 10th marks the last day of school for Broward County Schools, a significant milestone for many students. As high schools and colleges gear up for their graduation ceremonies, we celebrate the hard work and dedication of our young people. These ceremonies are not just about moving on, but also about reflecting with pride on their achievements and looking forward with anticipation to the next chapter.
In recognition of graduation and summer vacation, we celebrate some of our community’s most impressive teachers. Be sure to check out the profiles in this magazine’s special “Leaders of Learning” section!
June is not just about graduations and summer vacations; it’s also Pride Month! This is a time to reflect on the progress made in the fight for LGBTQ rights. Let’s celebrate our diversity and strive for a more inclusive world.
Fathers across the country are looking forward to June 16th. Father’s Day was conceived in 1909 by Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Inspired by Mother’s Day, she wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran and single parent who raised six children. It became an official holiday in 1966 when President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. We are so excited about all June of fers; enjoy!

Children’s Harbor Hosts Third Annual Career Day Expo for Foster Youth
For many students in Broward County, "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day" is an exciting opportunity to explore potential career paths by spending the day at their parent’s or guardian's workplace. However, for students currently in foster care, this day can be a reminder of the challenges they face without a parent or guardian to accompany them. To bridge this gap, Children's Harbor hosted its Third Annual Career Day Expo, providing a meaningful and inspiring experience for these youth.
The Career Day Expo was organized by Children's Harbor’s Academic and Life Skills team and featured representatives from 40 companies, government agencies, and the armed forces. This event offered students the chance to explore various career opportunities, interact with business professionals, and attend business etiquette and networking sessions. Throughout the Expo, students engaged with professionals from
diverse fields, learning about different industries and what it takes to succeed in each one. After the event, each student chose an industry that most piqued their interest. The Children's Harbor team then arranged for hands-on experiences at the selected companies on "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day," allowing students to gain real-world insights into their chosen careers.
“It’s truly a gift to be able to show these young people the kind of promising opportunities available to them,” said Children’s Harbor President and CEO Tiffani Dhooge. “For kids who come from traumatic backgrounds, the need to learn what’s expected of them in the often-intimidating work world is especially important and can positively change the trajectory of their life forever.”
Children's Harbor, established in 1996, is a nationally accredited nonprofit agency dedicated to supporting

families in the community and providing safe shelter and support for teens in foster care. The organization’s main campus in Pembroke Pines offers a nurturing environment for teenagers in foster care and their younger siblings. Additionally, Children's Harbor runs a family strengthening program to prevent children from entering foster care by offering in-home counseling and support to struggling families. For young adults aged 18-23 who have aged out of foster care, Children's Harbor provides housing, wrap-around support, and independent living programs to help them transition into adulthood.
With a mission to break cycles of trauma and provide a harbor of hope and healing, Children's Harbor is committed to helping foster youth grow into healthy, educated, and productive adults. The Career Day Expo is just one of the many ways the organization empowers young people to envision and achieve a brighter future.

LE ADER S OF LEARNING CELEBRATING EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATORS
Our City believes in celebrating the individuals who profoundly impact our community. This June, we are excited to dedicate a special section of our publication to Teacher Appreciation. This section will highlight the extraordinary efforts and accomplishments of some educators who go above and beyond to shape our children’s future.
Teachers are the heart of our community, dedicating countless hours to ensure that each student receives the best education possible. Their commitment extends beyond the classroom, touching lives in ways that often go unnoticed. In this special section, we will share the stories of some of our most inspiring teachers, showcasing their dedication, passion, and innovative educational approaches.
Many highly successful people credit teachers who impacted them as children. One particularly successful person who credits a teacher’s influence is Oprah Winfrey. Oprah has often spoken about her fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Duncan, who she says was the first person to make her feel valued and help her believe in her own potential.
Mrs. Duncan’s encouragement and support profoundly affected Oprah, helping to shape her into the confident and booming media mogul she is today. Oprah attributes much of her early development and later success to the positive influence
of this dedicated teacher.
Through these profiles, we aim to illuminate the incredible work our teachers do every day. Their stories are a testament to the power of education and the profound difference one dedicated individual can make.
Join us in celebrating these outstanding educators and recognizing their vital role in our community.

Maria Garcia has been a devoted educator for more than 19 years. As a kindergarten teacher at Greentree Prep Charter School in Southwest Ranches, she always puts her students first, ensuring they get the attention they need to succeed in school.
Mrs. Garcia is known for her exceptional performance year after year. She welcomes young students into a new environment and engages them in rigorous academics, ensuring they are ready for first grade. Many of her students start the school year without knowing English, but by mid-October, they are reading books and speaking fluently in English.
Mrs. Garcia’s commitment to her students’ success is unwavering. She arrives 45 minutes early and stays well after her class ends to prepare for the next day’s lessons. Her aim is to help her students reach their highest potential, and she consistently goes above and beyond to achieve this. We are incredibly proud of Mrs. Garcia for her outstanding performance, her loving and nurturing approach, and her commitment to teaching beyond the state standards.
Mrs. Garcia, a chemical engineer, found her calling 19 years ago when she began teaching at A World of Knowledge as a VPK teacher. She continued her education, received a teaching certificate for Kindergarten-3rd grade, and transferred to Greentree Prep Charter, where she has been for 7 years.

Pride: a time to celebrate the resilience, diversity, and triumphs of the LGBTQ+ community. It’s a reminder of how far we’ve come, the struggles we’ve faced, and the vibrant, inclusive future we’re forging together. Pride is more than a celebration—it’s a movement for inclusivity and equality, reminding the world that everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and valued. It highlights the importance of standing together against discrimination and fostering a society where love and acceptance prevail.
This year, the Pride season reaches its crescendo with the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida’s (GMCSF) signature Pride concert, a must-see event for the LGBTQ+ community, music enthusiasts, and arts supporters. Taking place at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 8 p.m., this musical extravaganza, titled ‘Pride: Then, Now, and Forever—A Multigenerational Concert Celebration,’ promises an unforgettable evening. Secure your tickets now through Ticketmaster or in person at the Broward Center’s AutoNation Box Office, open Tuesday through Friday, 12 to 5 p.m.

this concert will weave together decades of music, stories, and voices, creating a tapestry of shared history and hope for the future.
Prepare to be deeply moved by anthems that have defined past pride parades, like ‘It’s Raining Men,’ ‘Dancing Queen,’ and ‘YMCA.’ But this concert goes beyond music—it’s a heartfelt tribute to the diverse journeys and collective struggles of the LGBTQ+ community. The evening will also feature contemporary hits like Cher’s ‘Believe’ and Heather Small’s ‘Proud,’ echoing the dreams of a new generation and fostering a powerful emotional connection with you, our audience. Don’t miss the world premieres of “We’ve Come Through The Storm” by Tom Nichols and Dan Chadburn and “Don’t Say, Gay,” a vibrant number crafted exclusively for GMCSF by composer David Volpe. These pieces, commissioned by the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida under the artistic direction of Gabe Salazar, highlight their unwavering commitment to the arts and the LGBTQ+ community.

GMCSF is a beacon of unity, uniting diverse voices across generations and cultures with a shared vision of a brighter future. PRIDE: THEN, NOW & FOREVER –
For over half a century, our community has celebrated Pride, which commemorates the Stonewall Uprising on June 28th, 55 years ago. Since 1969, we have made great strides in our quest for equality, from marriage, the right to adopt and build a family, jobs, housing, and healthcare security to the right to serve in the military while being true to ourselves—all in under 55 years. The public acceptance of our community has been swift but not complete and certainly not without pushback.
The last few years with book bans and “Don’t Say Gay” legislation were stark reminders that complacency is not an option
Embracing Pride & Fighting for Equality
By: Robert Kesten, Executive Director Stonewall National Museum, Archives, & Library
and “Silence = Death” still looms overhead. The differences between 2024 and 1969 are enormous, but we cannot take our eyes off those filled with prejudice, hate, and anger. As other nations institute the death penalty for their LGBTQ+ populations, we can be sure that like-minded people are in our midst as well. Keeping our organizations well-funded, our institutions healthy, and our community informed is not simply an option but a necessity.
As we look to the future and the next 50+ years, we can celebrate that we are a talented community able to stand up for itself. We must never forget that our community thrives in every other community regardless of color, race, nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender, or place of origin. We are on all sides of every issue and carry the good and bad of the world in which we live. Those shared experiences give us strength. It allows us to be the world’s unifiers, even in these most divided times.
We even have a month dedicated to our efforts toward global unification: June is Pride Month. We have the opportunity to bring everyone under the rainbow flag, for those colors represent not only the LGBTQ+ population but everyone. We know how these other people think, how they feel, and why they act as they do. They are our parents, siblings, neighbors, and friends. We work with and live with them, and by welcoming them under our rainbow tent, we give them the communit y they seek.
Yes, we have a great deal more to do to protect our LGBTQ+ family from those who fear us because of who we love. Still, by being more inclusive, by being more welcoming, by reminding
others we are all more alike than we are different, and by holding to our belief that we are all the colors of the rainbow, we can weaken the grasp of hate and expand the meaning of liberation and Pride. So, this June, wherever you are, invite everyone you know to Pride; it should not matter who they love.
The Stonewall National Museum & Archives in Fort Lauderdale is a beacon for LGBTQ+ history and culture. Founded in 1973, it houses over 34,000 books and more than 6 million pages of archival materials, making it one of the largest gay archives in the U.S. The museum offers a rich collection of artifacts, documents, and photographs from the gay rights movement, providing interactive educational programs and special events throughout the year. With its extensive library and archival resources, the museum serves as a crucial hub for scholars, researchers, and the public to explore and celebrate LGBTQ+ heritage.

Greetings From Your Chamber President!
By Patty Archer
As we approach the beginning of hurricane season here in South Florida, it's essential for businesses to prioritize emergency preparedness to ensure the safety of employees, protect assets, and maintain operations during times of crisis. Hurricanes, power outages, and flooding are all potential threats that can significantly impact business continuity.
First and foremost, businesses should have a comprehensive emergency plan in place that outlines procedures for evacuations, communication protocols, and steps to safeguard critical infrastructure and data. Prepare lists of important items, make copies of essential documents, and rely on backup systems whenever possible. Regular training and drills can help ensure that employees are familiar with emergency procedures.
When it comes to hurricanes, businesses should closely monitor weather forecasts and take proactive measures to secure their facilities, such as boarding up windows, securing outdoor equipment, and relocating valuable assets if flooding is a concern.
In the event of flooding, businesses should have measures in place to protect against water damage, such as sandbagging doorways and installing flood barriers. Additionally, businesses should establish communication channels with employees, customers, suppliers, and local authorities to provide updates and coordinate response efforts during emergencies. Always have a backup plan for how and when you’ll reopen after a weather event.
By taking proactive steps to prepare for hurricanes, power outages, and flooding, businesses can minimize the impact of disasters and increase their resilience in the face of adversity. In the event of a hurricane, the Chamber will be ready to assist before and after the weather event to help businesses get back up and running as quickly as possible.
Now and in the future, the Chamber is dedicated to being a Convener of Leaders, a Catalyst for positive change, and a Champion for a strong business community. For more information and our event calendar, visit miramarpembrokepines.org.
Yours in Service,
Patty Archer

Pembroke Pines UPDATE
By Mayor Angelo Castillo
Dear Friends:
By the time this article reaches you, we will have conducted most of my initially planned 10 Town Hall Meetings citywide. I hope you were able to attend at least one of the meetings or watched the live stream we had from the City’s Commission Chambers on May 8th is also viewable on the City’s YouTube channel.
These Town Hall meetings gave me and our City Staff and Commissioners a chance to review the top ten polled concerns of city voters, and to listen to your additional ideas for a better city. Every idea, suggestion and concern we heard was brought back to City Hall and considered, as we prepare to traverse the arduous but necessary road to creating a citywide strategic plan aiming to move us forward. This task is exceptionally important for the future of our city. Our candid and direct discussions are the first steps in unifying our City around a blueprint for future success.
I am proud to be a Mayor for all our people and whether you voted for me or not, you will always have my vote on equal terms — a vote always cast based on what’s best for this city. I am committed to a City Hall that reflects your goals, responds to your needs, and works well for you. But as I mentioned in our Town Hall meetings, you will be the inspiration behind our strategic planning efforts. What happens in our City begins with you.
We had great conversations about traffic, taxes, affordable housing for our own working retired residents, flooding, public safety, trash, recycling and so much more. I can’t thank you enough for the hundreds of suggestions provided. The plan we produce after the Townhall meetings conclude will be presented for review and adoption and will serve as a guidepost for our work in Pembroke Pines together.
It’s that time of year when we officially begin Hurricane Season. All predictions are calling for a very active hurricane season given the combination of La Nina and record warm water temperatures. It only takes one storm to create an emergency. That’s why all storms need to be taken seriously. The City of Pembroke Pines has a comprehensive section on the city website at www.ppines. com/hurricane called “Pembroke Pines Prepared.” You’ll find information, videos and important resources in all languages regarding what to do before, during and after a storm. I encourage everyone to please be prepared. If you stay prepared at home, the plans to confront whatever comes our way can be professionally confronted at city hall. Together, we can overcome anything.
Very Sincerely Yours.
As always, I’m eager to know what’s on your mind. Any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020 or email me at acastillo@ppines.com.
