Back to School!
S
ummer vacations are a hallmark of modern life. After the final bell of the school year rings, children from across the country anxiously head home, often looking forward to trips abroad, excursions to the beach, local “staycations” or time at summer camps. This year was a bit different than most. Many students have not attended in-person classes for more than 18 months. This year, the transition back to school will be unlike any other. Most local kids return to school on August 18th this year. Like vacation options, the number of after-school programs has exploded. There is a myriad of activities and opportunities from which families to choose. Parents also have more choice in how their kids are educated today. Rather than simply dropping a child at the local bus stop, parents now decide between their local public school, charter schools, private schools, or online learning. Having so many choices can become overwhelming. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear; Our City is here to help! Check out Our City’s Back to School Guide in this month’s issue. It contains helpful information on the best preschools, private schools, and educational programs in the area. We have included almost every afterschool activity you can think of. The material is curated to provide our readers with a valuable guide to help them get ready for the new school year. Remember to enjoy the last couple of weeks of summer. Before you know it, school will have already started!

No Debating It…Miramar High School Senior
Knows What She is Talking About! By Beverly Perkins
S
chool may have ended for summer recess, but more than 6,000 middle and high school students from more than 1,400 schools around the nation gathered for a weeklong virtual competition. The National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) 2021 Online Tournament engaged all the dedicated students during the seasonal event. Three Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) students earned top honors in several categories of the NSDA 2021 Tournament. Ophilea Abidoye from Western High School won second place in ‘Storytelling’, and Caitlin Williams from Everglades High School placed third in ‘Original Spoken Word
Poetry’. But it was Miramar High School senior Sophia Williams who was named the 2021 National Speech and Debate Champion in the ‘Program Oral Interpretation’ category. The Program Oral Interpretation category focuses on a student’s ability to combine multiple genres of literature centered around a single theme. Williams without question tackled that category like a professional in her award-winning speech about “Black Lives Matter”. “I love speech and debate because, as the passionate person I am, it allows me to channel this passion for discussing issues that are important to me and communicate them to a larger
audience. I always say, with each performance I give, I am giving a voice to the voiceless. It is not about the rank or the trophy for me. It is about knowing that I have touched, whether it be one person or an entire audience, with my message. I have one voice, but whenever I get on stage, I become a representative of my community, and it brings me great joy,” explained Williams. Not only did she articulate her views with perfection on the heated topic, but the passionate student was also beyond animated as she acted out many scenarios on how black women are treated by police officers. Her flawless and creative execution certainly won over the judges as
Sophia Williams
she was given the illustrious title. “The speech and debate program has unlocked a potential within me that I’m sure no other activity could, and as a result, my dream is to become an actress. Viola Davis is my inspiration, and I envision myself being just like her. In the fall, I am attending the University of Florida, majoring in Sociology, and I plan on continuing my speech journey by doing college speech,” added Williams.

"Haven't been here in years but so glad we went back. The Special Grilled wings were amazing, even the mozzarella sticks were perfection... Our waitress was also attentive and great. One of the people in our group was shorted one wing, and the server was profusely apologetic. She came back with 3 additional wings to make up for it. That is great customer service!"

s the law stands today, equal time sharing is not presumed to be in the best interests of the children in all situations. I will however state that it is becoming the norm, rather than the exception. It is believed that frequent contact with both parents will result in a better adjusted child. Of course, every case is different and as such, it is difficult to have a set rule for all cases. Parent’s work schedules, travel schedules and locations should be considered. A parent who must leave for work prior to a minor child having to wake up for school could present a problem. A parent who does not have a set schedule such as pilots or firefighters also require some planning. Parents who choose to live a distance apart can also complicate the situation. Of course, the other factor which is always considered is child support and how equal time sharing affects the monthly amount to be paid. Child Support in Florida is based upon several factors, one of which is the number of overnights a minor child spends with each parent. An equal time-sharing schedule will result in a reduced amount of support, since it is presumed that each parent will have significant “out of pocket” expenses if each has an equal amount of time with the child. This concept of equal time sharing has existed for several years now. I have recently met with prospective clients who seem to share the same issue. A parent has equal time sharing pursuant to their Parenting Plan, but in reality, the parent is not actually exercising his/her 50%. The result is that the parent who is not following the schedule is receiving a financial benefit by a reduced child support payment, but is not sharing in the responsibility of caring for the child. Is there a way to correct this situation, even though the parties had previously reached an Agreement? The answer is yes and a correction to this situation can be accomplished by a Petition for Modification. The moving party (the parent who is in fact receiving less support than he/she should) must allege that since the parties entered into their Parenting Plan there has been a substantial change of circumstance, that was not anticipated at the time the Parenting Plan was agreed to. To be successful it is essential that a calendar be kept, listing the actual overnights being exercised by each parent. Just alleging that mom or dad doesn’t have the children 50% of the time, without some additional proof, will probably not be a strong or successful argument if it were to go before a judge. If the Petition is successful, a new time-sharing schedule would be determined and child support would be recalculated based upon the actual number of overnights each party is exercising.

aribbean American Heritage Month was a highly celebrated event in the City of Miramar. The month-long celebration culminated with a food lovers’ extravaganza. Miramar Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis hosted “Taste of the Caribbean Islands” at the Miramar Town Center where hundreds came out to experience an explosion of the senses.
32 / August 2021 / OurCityMedia.com
From Jamaican Jerk Chicken and Bahamian Conch Chowder to Haitian Joumou and Latin Arepas, the delicious island recipes had many mouths watering for a taste of home. The plaza was filled with so many island delights. Other Caribbean novelty items were also on display and for sale. Not only did local Caribbean restaurants and food trucks bring out their best specialty dishes, but live entertainment was also abundant with the sounds of the islands. A great lineup of Caribbean artists included Steel Away drum band, Visions Band, Latin Soul Band, Roger George from Trinidad, and Reggae singers King Banton and Gianpaul. The talented groups each took the stage to set the vibe for a great time. Additionally, comedian Bert C. got plenty of laughs while the Moko Jumbie stilt dancers delighted guests of all ages.
“Whether your preference is Jamaican, Cuban, Haitian, Trinidadian, Bahamian or any of the other signature dishes from your favorite Caribbean Island, you were in for a culinary treat. We had great comedy, music, and food. It was certainly an evening to remember,” exclaimed Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis. Residents have another chance to party with Commissioner Davis Caribbean style on August 1st as she presents the “Jamaica 59th Pre-Independence Day Fete” from 3:00 pm -11:00 pm at Miramar Regional Park, 16801 Miramar Parkway. All families are invited to revel in Jamaica’s sound system culture with great music, food, drinks, and so much more. Admission is free!

Benefits of Running with Orthotics
W
hether you like to run 5K’s, 10K’s, Half or Full Marathons, having the proper running shoe is the single most important factor in injury prevention for runners of any level of competition or training. Running shoes must be selected based on the following: past experience with different shoe brands; biomechanical demands specific to the gait of the runner; and environment of the running surface on which the runner will race or train. In addition, current injuries and foot type (pronated, neutral, supinated) must be addressed to maximize running efficiency. If a runner is pronated, or flat footed, they are using more muscle energy to compensate and elevate the arch to a more ideal push off position. This leads to slower racing times, more overuse injuries, and degenerative joint changes to the lower extremity. A custom orthotic can maintain the fallen arch in a more energy efficient position allowing your muscles to work less, creating potentially faster racing times, and decreasing lower extremity injury. A supinated or high arch, that is flexible, can also cause pain and present

with similar issues; this can be addressed with a custom orthotic as well. Going for a run? Check out these injury prevention tips first: How often should I replace my running shoes? It is commonly recommended to replace running shoes every 300-500 miles. This can be difficult to keep track of, so the competitive runner should keep a running calendar to calculate when they will need replacement shoes based on their daily mileage and training schedule. For the more casual runner who does not track their mileage, it takes approximately 66 hours to run 500 miles at an eight-minute per mile pace. When is the best time to try on new shoes and how do I know they fit? Always try a new pair of shoes on late afternoon. This is when your feet are the largest due to swelling from standing and activity throughout the day. Always wear a cushioned sock when trying on a new shoe. You should be able to fit your thumb’s width in between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. How many pairs of shoes should I be using at one time? For the competitive runner, two to three pairs of shoes should be used. It is best to alternate running in one pair one day then using the second pair the second day to allow
full recoil of the shoe cushioning and maximize the life of your shoes as well as decrease your chance of injury. What shoes should I wear when I’m not running or training? Never walk in flat flexible shoes, flat sandals, or barefoot; even around your house. Competitive runners use recovery sandals with arch support and a heel that is higher than the toes. Purchase a good pair of supportive house sandals to prevent stress or overuse injury secondary to lack of arch support. What are the best socks for runners? Socks are essential in terms of injury prevention and athletic performance. Synthetic Acrylic/ CoolMax® fiber socks are ideal for the distance runner in order to prevent friction skin injuries. Many running stores have sport-specific socks with thickened padding for prominent areas on the feet to prevent mechanical or shear-induced injury to the deep tissue and bone. ⊲Dr. John Goodner is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot & Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida. Dear Readers: This month you’ll experience new changes through the various openings that began occurring over the last few weeks. The City hosted a very fun July 4th celebration for all of our residents and it was so good to once again have such gatherings, even though we are still being very cautious and some adaptations are in place. Our staff is busy creating and planning other events that we’ve all missed for so many months. I encourage all Pines residents to visit the Recreation & Cultural Arts and the Community Service web pages at www.ppines.com, check our calendars, and visit our social media pages on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for all the exciting activities and further openings scheduled for the coming months. A quick reminder – before going to The Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center, The Frank Art Gallery, and the Passport Office on City Hall’s 4th Floor, which are now open, please be sure to follow any restrictions and guidelines explained on the website. As you know, August is one of our hottest months of the year, so I urge parents and others to remain vigilant about the ongoing danger of leaving children and pets in hot cars. Temperatures that might seem comfortable for adults can quickly become dangerous for children and pets. Even elderly passengers who can’t care for themselves, or those with cognitive problems, can also be at risk if they’re left in a car on even a mild day. Never, ever leave your kids or pets in a parked car, even for a moment. This is also the time for the new school year to begin. Another important reminder is for motorists to slow down and proceed with caution in school zones, stop for buses and be alert for children walking in the street or biking to school. The first day of school in Broward County is August 18th so school zones will once again be operational. Please remember that we are still in hurricane season and are quickly approaching our most active time of the year. I hope everyone has their hurricane plans in place and is taking steps to prepare. This also includes pruning trees and landscaping now before a storm is on our doorstep. Be sure to visit our hurricane preparedness information at www.ppines.com/hurricane to help you in your preparations. There are helpful tips, informational videos, resources, etc. covering every aspect of making sure we are storm safe. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com

argie Purtic says that when Guardian ad Litem volunteer Chuck Davidson came to visit the little boy she was fostering, her four biological children would come downstairs, too. “He doesn’t just tend to our little foster guy,” Margie says. “He’s like everyone’s grandpa…I’m sure he’s like this with everyone.” Absolutely he is. Chuck carries a ball in his bag and is always ready to play. He invented the “secret Guardian ad Litem handshake” for a little boy who’d been shaken as a baby and lived in a therapeutic foster home. Back to School
fter a much-needed summer break, schools will be opening their doors for students on August 18th, for the 2021-2022 school year. Broward County Public Schools have returned to 100% in-person, faceto-face learning. The Miramar Police Department wants to assure you that we are committed to the safety and future of the youth in our community. School resource officers will be present, as they have been for decades, excited to see new

and familiar faces. We were the first agency in Broward County to provide full-time school resource officers in every public school campus (two officers at the high schools). Today, our charter schools benefit from our School Resource Officer program as well. Although school safety is a top priority, it is important to note that school resource officers provide more than security. Teaching students life lessons, such as goal setting, character traits, and providing information on bullying and drug abuse prevention is a role that many officers have in our schools. Connecting with students, by bridging the gap between law enforcement and the next generation is important. We understand community engagement is key to building trust and meaningful relationships. Having our officers interact with
students and staff on a daily basis has been beneficial to building that trust. Officers, many of whom are a familiar face to students, often become a second support system outside the home - mentoring and counseling students and assisting them in times of need or crises. School resource officers are not only located at the schools for students, but also for faculty, staff, and parents. Our officers handle issues and crimes that may occur within the school, but they are also a resource for families – providing information on services and outreach programs available to residents in need. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your children’s school resource officer. We would be remiss if we did not remind parents to be prepared and arrive at school early, if you are dropping off your children, to avoid high traffic
times. Many parents on the first day of school want to capture these precious moments by picture or video, but please be considerate to those around you. We suggest snapping these photos before leaving your home and having all supplies ready for drop off. Doing this will help alleviate traffic congestion. Drivers, please slow down and be aware of the school zones in your area. Keep a lookout for bus stops, children crossing the streets, or riding their bicycles. From the first day of kindergarten to high school graduation and all the other milestones in between, our school resource officers are here for your children and our entire community. We wish each child a safe and successful school year!
