“When Mom said she wanted to move to The Palace, I said she’d been binge-watching The Crown too much.”
“We have a lot of fun together, but I worry about her alone in that house. She says I come by too often and pester her too much about meds and diet. So to preserve her independence, she told me she was moving to the new Palace in Weston. I was skeptical when she took me there. I was dazzled 10 minutes later. It is gorgeous, they haven’t skimped on anything, and the people are fabulous. I knew she would be in good hands. So that will be a relief for both of us. And I’m always invited for Happy Hour and all of their legendary parties. Worried if The Palace is right for your mother? Come take the tour and you’ll never worry again.”

SUMMER CHECK-UP TIME!
I
t is hard to believe that the summer is already ending. It’s time to review the school supplies list, pick out that lucky lunch box, and finish the summer reading assignments. August 16th is the first day of school for most kids in the area. Preparing for school has certainly gotten more complex over the past 20 years. We have gone from wrapping textbooks in brown paper bags to downloading software onto smartphones, iPads, and Chromebooks. After-school programs have exploded from sports and music to a variety of different opportunities from computer classes to dual language programs. Parents have more choices as well. Neighborhood schools, charter schools, home school and virtual school are options now in addition to traditional private and public schools. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City is here to help! Check out our Back to School Guide in this issue. It contains useful information on the area’s best preschools, private schools, and educational programs in addition to almost every afterschool activity you can think of, from arts to the YMCA. The material is curated to provide a useful guide to help you get ready for the new school year. Please enjoy these last few weeks of summer. School will start before you know it.

EARLY VOTING IS OPEN AUG 13 - AUG 21
T
he 2022 Florida Primary Election will be held on August 23, 2022. This will be the first election since districts were changed as a result of the redistricting process. Redistricting takes place every ten years following the United States census. Political districts for state and federal offices are determined by the Florida Legislature based on a number of factors including population and the political objectives of those in power.
Closed Primary
Visit the Broward County Supervisor of Elections website to locate your voting place, confirm your voter registration status, and view your sample ballot. Florida is a “closed primary” state. In partisan office contests in a primary election, a voter may only vote for the candidates of the party in which he or she is registered. That’s
why different ballot styles exist in a primary election. The voter’s ballot style is tied to his or her party affiliation. Voters registered with no party affiliation (NPA) are not eligible to vote for partisan candidates in a primary election.
Early Voting
Early voting is a great way to cast your ballot ahead of time and works exactly the same way as voting on election day. Except, any Broward voter can vote at any early voting location. Early voting for the August primary election is from August 13 through August 21, 2022. Early voting is open from 10:00 am - 7:00 pm.

Splash in the Pines
ake a “Splash” on the last weekend of summer vacation before school starts! The City of Pembroke Pines is hosting a fun-filled day of water games and activities on Saturday, August 13, from 10:00 am till 1:00 pm at the West Pines Soccer Park. This new event will feature lots of water-themed play and more than a few surprises for residents of Pembroke Pines. One of the best things about living in Pembroke Pines is the variety of choices parents have for educating their children. There are Broward County Public Schools, The Pembroke Pines Charter School System, a number of other private and charter school selections and more to choose from. Despite these wonderful choices, the kids can be a little disappointed when summer vacation ends. Luckily, the City of Pembroke Pines can help take the heat off. Kids and families will have an opportunity to enjoy water slides, water games, and lots of give-a-ways to help splash back to school. Food trucks and refreshments will be
on hand to keep the whole family well-fed and hydrated. Wake up early to get your last minute school shopping finished, then grab your bathing suit, your trusty squirt gun, and a big bag of laughs and head out for a Splash in the Pines!

he words to the classic song will make almost anyone smile, but no one struck when Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank Ortis hosted the annual Mayor’s Play Ball Summer event in conjunction with the United State Conference of Mayors (USCM) and Major League Baseball. Boys and girls aged 7 to 14 participated in the free event on July 15th at Flamingo Park. The event featured fun activities, music and food and was held to promote youth baseball and softball. Kids split into age groups while the mayor hosted pitch, hit and run competitions. Pembroke Pines has participated in the Major League Baseball program since shortly after it was launched in June 2015. The nationwide campaign encourages sustained participation in baseball and seeks to link generations with the game. Play Ball serves as a platform to connect with those who are currently involved in the game, while also providing alternative ways for those looking to get involved, with a specific focus on youth participation. Now through August of 2022, with the help of mayors across the
country, Play Ball Events will be held with the goal of energizing communities and generating support and love for baseball and softball. The mayor was joined by representatives from the Florida Marlins at this year’s event. In addition to on-field activities, their kids received a Play Ball t-shirt, enjoyed snacks, tried their best to get their friends wet with the dunk tank, and got pictures with Marlin’s mascot Bill Marlin. “We love getting out here with the kids,” said Mayor Ortis, “it puts a smile on everyone’s face!” Keep smiling Mr. Mayor.

Studio 18 Hosts Grand Opening Reception
P
for American Graffiti Exhibit
embroke Pines residents came out in droves to celebrate the nation’s birthday on July 4th. The annual event is a favorite for all members of the family and this year’s celebrations were no exception. Studio 18 Art Complex hosted an opening reception for its latest exhibit, American Graffiti on July 15th. The exhibit will be on display through September 7 at the facility on Poinciana Drive. Studio 18 Art offers affordable space for emerging and mid-career artists. Inside studios range in size, are well lit, and have sinks. Resident artists participate in exhibitions throughout the year, which draw hundreds of people and enjoy 24-hour secure access and the ability to teach their craft in classrooms and fully use the artists’ lounge. Artists interested in studio rentals must complete a juried artist application and submit it for approval. The newest exhibition bills itself this way: Contemporary graffiti is so much more than just painted walls, it is a mood, it is a lifestyle. Graffiti emerges from the creative street/urban environment to encompass a much larger and complex influence. This exhibit acknowledges the historical importance of graffiti as an art form while simultaneously providing a glimpse of its many new varied forms.
▸
Visit Studio 18 Monday through Friday from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm or Saturday from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm to view the exhibit or purchase original artwork. Studio 18 Art Complex is located at 1101 Poinciana Drive, Pembroke Pines. For more info call 954-961-6067.

JUICY
■ OUR CITY EATS
Never Tasted This Good!
T
wo words come to mind when you visit The Juicy Crab, located at the corner of Pines Boulevard and NW 101st Ave: Fun and Flavor. The restaurant is bright and welcoming and staffed by a very friendly team who will set you at ease the instant you walk in. The flavors diners enjoy, whether it is from one of their signature sauces, a sweet dessert or a shot off their “Juicy Cocktails” menu. This place will keep the most sophisticated foodies coming back for more. The Juicy Crab is a great restaurant to visit with a group of friends or family to enjoy a perfectly seasoned meal. The friendly and knowledgeable staff help even a seafood boil novice choose the perfect meal.
It is OK to Get Messy
TAKE A LOOK! 36 / Our City Pembroke Pines / July 2022
The Juicy Crab offers seafood boil entrees. These delectable meals are steamed fresh in The Juicy Crab’s kitchen, smothered in one of their signature sauces, and brought to your table sealed in plastic on a platter. The plastic is opened at the table, allowing diners to breathe in the incredible spicy aroma emanating from the piping hot sauce. After dinner is served, it is time to get messy. Dining at The Juicy Crab is typically, and most successfully done with your hands. The act or cracking open a perfectly seasoned crab leg and pulling out the juicy meat is a primal joy for diners of all ages. The tradition of eating food with the hands is called kamayan meaning “with hands.” Kamayan is an ancient tradition in many areas of the Middle East because there is belief that eating with the hands rather than utensils benefits the digestive system. Don’t worry about indulging in primal , however. Prior to being served your server will bring a “bucket” with everything you need, including bibs, plastic gloves, cracking tools for the crab clusters, and some wet wipes. Dining is definitely a hands-on activity and the bigger your mess, the happy the serving staff is, because they know you are enjoying your meal. Cajun Flavors in South Florida Flavors and variety are the key to enjoying a meal at The Juicy Crab. The steamed oysters are a perfect start to any meal. Diners can choose from any of their sauces at whatever spice level they are comfortable with. The Juicy Crab offers a variety of fan-favorite seafood boils to choose from. You can build your own boil, by selecting from a wide variety
of options or you can choose from one of their Combo Boils. We chose to build our own boil and included some of the restaurant’s favorite items like lobster tail, snow crab, crawfish, and shrimp. Diners get a wide variety of flavorful options including Garlic Butter, Lemon Pepper, Old Bay, and our favorite, the Juicy Special. The food was melt-in your-mouth tender while the flavor from the sauce brought it all together. The shareable service allowed everyone in our party to try a number of different items, enhancing the experience. Juicy Cocktails The Juicy Crab offers a number of specials and signature cocktails from the bar. They also offer a number of specialty shots to keep the fun going. We loved their Peanut ‘Butter and Jelly’ and the ‘Banana Pudding’ shots. The bartender also offered a unique creation of pineapple cubes soaked in moonshine. We told you this restaurant was authentically Cajun, didn’t we!
The Place to Enjoy A Meal
What makes The Juicy Crab great is its utter lack of pretension. Diners eat the same shrimp, crab, or lobster that they might be served at a stuffy white-tablecloth restaurant without worrying about making a mess. The seafood is seasoned perfectly and cocktails are always available.
Try the “Tuesday” Special
A Combo #1, 1/2lb shrimp, 1/2lb sausage with corn & potato. Usually $15.99, the Tuesday Special will be $9.99. The Tuesday special will run all day every Tuesday and is definitely an awesome deal. Lunch Specials are also available Monday thru Friday 12pm to 3 pm. If you want to listen to some tunes while you eat, there is Karaoke on Tuesdays evenings & a DJ on Friday nights. our chamber of commerce is much more than networking. For hundreds of years, chambers of commerce have served as the voice of the business community. As your local business advocate, our chamber leadership is currently reviewing our legislative agenda to ensure that our focus is reflective of the current economic climate and priorities. We are dedicated to representing the interests of our business members and continuing to make southwest Broward a thriving place to live, work, and play. Midterm elections are soon approaching, especially primary elections later this month. As stakeholders in our community, it’s important that everyone participates in the democratic process of electing our representatives and voicing our opinions on important ballot questions. If you have not done so, we urge you to register to vote or check your registration status at www. browardvotes.gov. Our chamber will always support legislation that will help our businesses thrive. We are a nonpartisan organization and support pro-business initiatives.
If you have a business in the area, or if your ideal customers are in southwest Broward, come check out what the chamber can offer you. Chamber membership offers businesses visibility in the community, networking opportunities, support through advocacy, and credibility in the eyes of consumers. Membership is an investment in your business! We have hundreds of business members that are ready to get to know you and start referring business to you. Now and in the future, the Chamber is dedicated to being a Convener of leaders, a Catalyst for positive change, and a Champion for a strong business community. For more information and our event calendar, visit miramarpembrokepines.org. Yours in Service,
Patty Archer Chamber President

“Aspen” Hi, I’m Aspen. I’m 1 years old and live with my Hooomans and 4 failed foster cats. I like to herd my 4 cat siblings into one room for fun! I like treats and bully sticks. Long walks aren’t to bad either... but my favorite thing is playing catch.

UPDATE
D
By Frank C. Ortis
ear Readers, School will soon be back in session and that means school buses will be back out on the roads. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the greatest risk to any child is not riding a bus, but rather approaching or leaving one. It’s important for everyone to know the traffic safety rules near bus stops, as well as near buses on the road. A few notes to remember: Children should never walk behind a school bus when approaching a bus stop. And, parents are encouraged to visit the bus stop and show the child where to wait safely for the bus which is at least six feet (or three giant steps) away from the curb. The bus stop is not a place to run or play. If driving behind a bus, allow a greater following distance than if driving behind a car. It will allow more time to stop once the red lights flash and the STOP arm is extended. The area 10 feet around a school bus is reportedly the most dangerous for children so it’s important for drivers to stop far enough back to allow them space to safely enter and exit the bus. Back to school means sharing the road with school buses, more parents taking children to and from school and even children on bikes. Please be aware of entering school zones, slow down near bus stops, be aware of children in the area, and follow bus safety rules to ensure a safe school year. Although the summer is starting to wind down, I hope everyone still gets a chance to take some time to relax a bit and enjoy all the amenities the City of Pembroke Pines has to offer during our summer months, such as “Splash in the Pines’’ on Saturday, August 13, 2022 from 10 AM-1 PM at the West Pines Soccer Park & Nature Preserves, located at 350 SW 196 Ave. Children can enjoy water theme games, activities and so much more. Please visit the Recreation & Cultural Arts web page at www.ppines. com, check our calendars, and visit our Facebook page at www. facebook/cityofpembrokepines for exciting events and programs that are planned for the coming months. Be sure to also check out the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center’s many monthly Social Service programs, created to enhance the wellbeing of seniors by providing assistance and facilitating services to them while maintaining an independent lifestyle. Current groups are Aging Healthy and Living Independently, Current Trends in Caregiving and Personal Enrichment Group. For more information, please call the Center at 954-450-6888. Lastly, we are still in hurricane season and are quickly approaching our most active time of the year. I hope everyone has their hurricane plans in place and are taking steps to prepare. This also includes pruning trees and landscaping now before a storm is on our doorstep. Please visit our hurricane preparedness information at www.ppines.com/hurricane to help you in your preparations. There are helpful tips, informational videos, resources etc. covering every aspect of making sure we are storm safe. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com.
