October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
L
ast year more than 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer and 685,000 died, according to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (ABCF). Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. It accounts for about ¼ of all cancers in women and 12 percent of all new cancer cases across all sexes. In the United States, there will be about 280,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed. Despite massive progress in diagnosis and treatment, about 15% of those diagnosed will eventually succumb to the disease. But, there is hope. Over the past 45 years, the five-year survival rate has significantly increased for breast cancer patients. In fact, people with localized disease at the time of diagnosis now have a 99% five-year survival rate, while the survival rate for women with metastatic breast cancer, that has spread beyond her breast, is just 28%. Early detection is perhaps the most important thing. The ABCF recommends women should regularly conduct self-examinations beginning in their 20s and receive annual mammograms beginning in their 40s. There are many new promising therapies being tested and developed. More important than a new miracle drug, however, is identifying a lump or change in your body. And, if you do detect something, seek medical help. It could make all the difference.

nce Upon a Time a Vice Mayor wanted to spread her love of reading with the local children of all ages in her kingdom. So, she sponsored Little Free Libraries across the City of Miramar. The ambitious Miramar leader, Vice Mayor Yvette Colbourne, loved the concept and wanted to implement the “Take a Book, Return a Book” notion. Anyone can stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another to share. “The City of Miramar is committed to supporting the largest book-sharing movement that allows our citizens to share and discover new books,” explained Vice Mayor Colbourne. “What a thrill it is to sponsor the new Little Free Libraries so more children and families can enjoy the benefits and joy of reading.” Little Free Libraries are not regular libraries in large structures with librarians, thousands of books, and hours of operation.
(One doesn’t need a library card either.) These “little” libraries are just that - little. They are colorful pieces of art that look like a birdhouse or a mailbox which are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. They have become a gathering place where neighbors and community members can share their favorite literature and stories in a fun and unusual way. nce again, The City of Miramar Police Department (MPD), with the support of Broward Crime Stoppers, and Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis joined forces to make sure city residents are safe and healthy. This year marks their fourth “Guns for Funds” event where individuals can safely dispose of their unwanted firearms in a safe and 100% anonymous way in return for gift cards. Additionally, the event will coincide with “National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day”. “The three previous ‘Guns for Funds’ events netted 201 unwanted firearms being turned in. I am hopeful that this event will be just as successful and am also pleased to be partnering with Walgreens to distribute vitamin C tablets to those disposing of their unwanted prescription drug medication. Keeping Miramar residents safe and healthy is a top priority,” stated Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis. Individuals can receive up to a $100 gift card for each handgun surrendered and

up to a $150 gift card for each assault rifle or shotgun turned in. All guns brought to the event must be unloaded and placed in the trunk of a vehicle. There is no limit to the number of guns dropped off and no identification is necessary. BB guns, pellet guns, plastic guns, and ammunition can be donated, but are not eligible for compensation. The community is also encouraged to bring their unused, unwanted, or expired medications for safe disposal. Disposing of unused medication by flushing it down the toilet or throwing it in the trash can potentially cause safety and health hazards. Storing prescription drugs that are no longer needed or expired increases the risk of children ingesting the pills and/or medications being stolen by addicts. The esteemed commissioner and police department aim to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible way to educate the public about potential abuse of prescription drugs and a responsible way of disposing of them.

roward County Public Schools (BCPS) launched a webbased dashboard to give parents up-to-date information on the number of within their school community who have tested positive for COVID-19. The dashboard, which is updated daily, can be broken down by students and faculty and is sortable by school.
The data are reported based on the day the positive test is reported to the school. Confirmed cases are as reported to the school system’s Risk Management and Coordinated Student Health Services, based on the date tested as reported to the District. Parents are cautioned that there could be delays in the reporting.
BCPS created the dashboard to give as much transparency as possible to families with children in school. The district reopened with mask mandates at all schools. The school board has been in a public battle with Governor Ron Desantis over the board’s decision to require masks. According to the New Your Times’ Coronavirus Case Count, Broward County has seen an increasing number of new cases since June. The county as a whole is currently averaging more than 2,000 new cases a day, which is the highest level of new cases since the epidemic began. The Broward County Commission has also created several dashboards to help residents get up-to-date information. These include a map showing the percent of residents who are vaccinated and a report on hospital utilization.

What is an Abusive Relationship? According to the National Coalition against Domestic Violence, battering is defined as a pattern of behavior used to establish power and control over another person through fear and intimidation, often including the threat or use of violence. Domestic violence can occur anywhere and to anyone regardless of socio-economic status, gender, race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, educational background, etc. It is a crime of manipulation that anyone can fall prey to. The abuser uses power to manipulate and control a person. Also, fear often contributes to why a person may stay in an abusive relationship. The victim/survivor may be motivated by love to stay, but it is important to remember that the abuser is not motivated by feelings of love or intimacy. Love should never hurt someone. Rather than question why a victim/survivor of domestic violence stays in an abusive relationship, let’s turn our focus to holding the abuser accountable, and question why they would choose to harm and endanger someone. Yes, batterers can control their behavior. Millions of people are abused each year, but there is help out there. If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, it is important to get help.

reetings Miramarians: It has been over a year since we have had to endure the effects of the Coronavirus. We’ve lost loved ones, colleagues, friends and others we didn’t even know but felt sadness for their loss. Thousands of COVID-19 survivors will never be the same due to lingering physical effects of having been infected. Our first responders including fire, police, doctors, nurses and scientists risked their lives to help save ours in what began as an unknown but is now at least somewhat understood. I reflect on the negative impacts of the pandemic, but I remain optimistic. Our scientists have developed several vaccine options that, while not eliminating the virus, they all provide life saving and illness protection in most cases. We now know if you take the vaccine, your chances of survival are certainly better than not having taken the vaccine and yet, there is still some vaccination hesitancy. For various reasons, the unvaccinated for valid reasons or not, put themselves and others at risk. I refrain from passing judgement for getting the vaccine is truly a personal decision. However, the data overwhelmingly supports a case for those that are unvaccinated, to do so. Our Health Departments and the CDC confirm that the recent surge in COVID-19 deaths

H
ealing after an injury involves a well-orchestrated and complex series of events where proteins in the blood act as messengers to regulate the entire process. Many proteins involved in the healing process are derived from small cell fragments in the blood called platelets. Platelets are small, colorless, cell fragments present in the blood. What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)? Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentration of platelets and growth factors created from a small amount of your own blood. Increased levels of growth factors have the potential to improve signaling and recruitment of cells. What conditions can it treat? PRP can be used to treat Arthritis (foot or ankle), Ligament Injuries (acute or chronic), Tendon Injuries (acute or chronic), Joint Pain, Chronic Inflammatory Conditions, Achilles Tendonitis, Plantar Fasciitis, Chronic Nerve Irritation (Neuritis), Shin Splints and Heel Spurs. How does the PRP process work? Our doctors will recover a small amount of blood from your arm using a small needle and a specially designed syringe. The blood then goes through a rapid spinning process that separates and concentrates the platelets and other beneficial growth fac-tors from the blood. The entire PRP production process is usually done in less than 20 minutes. What happens after that? The injected area will be anes-thetized with a local anesthetic (Lidocaine). LEGISLATIVE UPDATE By State Representative Robin Bartleman
Dear Residents, As we head into the Fall, I want to share with you some updates from District 104 and what I am doing for you as we gear up for the 2022 legislative session. Students are back to school and as a former teacher, school board member, and as a parent, it is my favorite time of year! On August 18, I visited 7 schools throughout District 104 to meet with principals and celebrate the first day back. Thank you to Cypress Bay High School, Flanagan High School, Pembroke Pines Charter High School, Pembroke Pines Charter Central Campus K-8, Somerset Academy, Lakeside Elementary, Silver Trail Middle, and Hawks Bluff Elementary for hosting me this year. Before the start of the school year, we hosted a backpack drive for Mujeres Latinas to ensure that the 20 young girls participating in their mentorship program had new backpacks and supplies! Our office also worked with United Way Broward to donate backpacks and supplies to children of our veterans. Thank you to those who donated! This summer was unfortunately met with a spike in COVID-19 rates. I requested that the Florida Department of Health and the Executive Office of the Governor deliver the third dose of the COVID- 19 vaccine to the large senior communities in our district. Broward's only site for Monoclonal Antibody Treatment is here in District 104. The treatment site is open from 9 AM- 5 PM at CB Smith Park, 900 North Flamingo Road, Pembroke Pines. Monoclonal antibody treatments can prevent hospitalization or death for patients with COVID-19. Individuals
12 years and older, that have contracted or been exposed to COVID-19, are eligible for this treatment. Treatment is free and vaccination status does not matter. Alzheimer's is one of the leading causes of death and illness among older Americans. This is why I partnered with the Alzheimer's Association to bring the Brain Bus to Century Village and Weston City Hall in August. We provided informational resources for caregivers and residents of all ages. If you missed the bus and you or someone you love needs support now, visit alz.org or call the Alzheimer’s Association’s 24/7 Helpline at (800) 272- 3900. I look forward to returning annually with the Brain Bus to meet you all and raise Alzheimer’s awareness. Lastly, I have filed my first bill for the 2022 legislative session to prioritize our first responders. During the Surfside condominium collapse, I watched the mental toll it took on the search and rescue crew. Front line workers put their lives on the line to protect us. It is only right that we are
there for them. I met with UCF RESTORES, the National Center of Excellence for First Responder Behavioral Health, to design a comprehensive PTSD training that includes suicide prevention, coping strategies, and peer support. I filed legislation in August to provide PTSD training for our fire, police, and other first responders. The bill will also extend workers compensation to 911 telecommunications and correctional officers.
