Summer Camp Traditions – We Need Them More Now Than Ever
T
he American tradition of summer camp goes back many years. The precursors to today’s camps were born during the turn of the 19th century as part of a “back to nature” cultural movement. Summer camp popularity took off during World War II. With fathers away fighting and mothers working to support the effort, organizations like the Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts, and the YMCA began camps to simply keep kids busy while school was out. What started out as cheap daycare has evolved into the myriad of camp options families have today. There is a camp for virtually every interest, from sports and theater to computer programming and world language studies. With so many choices available, some children explore several interests by attending multiple camp programs during the same summer. In addition to pursuing passions, summer camp is a chance for kids to try new things and make new friends. That’s more important than ever because today’s kids are growing up in the digital age. Summer camp allows children to connect with peers, play actual games not virtual ones, and experience the world around them. To find the best camp or camps for your child, check out the Our City Summer Camp Guide in this issue, or go to www.ourcitymedia.com for a complete listing of all the summer camp programs in the region. Sincerely,

n May 20, Pembroke Pines families are encouraged to spend the day exploring one of the 32 parks in the area during the 7th Annual National Kids to Parks Day. The event will be held on May 20, from 8am to 4pm, and May 21, from 9am to 3pm. Admission and parking are free. Proceeds will benefit senior programs. “Over 100 indoor vendors will offer tens of thousands of items at flea market prices,” said Valerie Toth, Activities Events Specialist and Flea Market point person. “Stop on in and buy someone else’s old treasures! You never know what you’ll find. If it’s something you’ve been searching for, it’s probably here!” There will be thousands of household items, toys, clothing, new & estate jewelry, collectibles, bath soaps & scrubs, record albums, baseball cards, and much more. There will also be food available in Emilio’s Café. Buyers are encouraged to come early, since a large crowd of people always forms before the doors open. Most know what they are looking for and want to be the first to find it. Marty Abel has attended for the past five years. “I am always searching for bargains on antique furniture and old record albums,” said Abel. “I usually find both! It is nice to be able to attend a flea market in the cool indoors instead of outside in the heat.” The Flea Market and Bazaar is held four times a year (February, May, August, and November). It raises funds for programs at the SWFP Community Center,

O
n May 29, hundreds are expected to honor United States Veterans during the City of Pembroke Pines’ annual Memorial Day Ceremony, held at 9am, at Donnith H. Fletcher Park, 7900 Johnson Street. They will pay their respects and witness the laying of the wreath at the Veterans Monument in Donnith H. Fletcher Park, named after the first Pembroke Pines resident to become a causality of the Vietnam War. On June 30, 1970, at the close of the Vietnam War, Donnith H. Fletcher and seven other soldiers were aboard helicopters which were shot down. Fletcher received a posthumous Purple Heart. In 1971, City officials dedicated Donnith H. Fletcher Memorial Park in his memory. Daily, people of all ages enjoy visiting and playing at Donnith H. Fletcher Memorial Park on Johnson Street, just East of University Drive. At last year’s ceremony, Mayor Ortis welcomed the crowd and Pembroke Pines Fire Department Chaplain Captain Vincent Scardino delivered the invocation. The Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Honor Guard presented the Colors, Boy Scout Troop 460 led the Pledge of Allegiance and Natalie Lang sang the National Anthem. Several people spoke, including Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis;

f 15-year-old Madison White of Pembroke Pines isn’t undergoing chemo for osteosarcoma (bone cancer), she is usually at the stables. She loves to ride horses, has been taking riding lessons and dreams of competing in horse shows. When she was asked to attend a horse show to support a trainer, it seemed like a natural request. She had no idea that she would be the 11,000th person to be granted a wish from Make-A-Wish Southern Florida. Madison was enjoying the show, when the announcer requested that she come to the center of the arena. Surrounded by Make-AWish staff, as well as her family and friends, she was presented with “Cos,” a former thoroughbred that has been retrained as a jumper. Her wish to be able to compete in jumping events had Photo Credit: Make-A-Wish Southern Florida, Impact Players come true. Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 5/31/17) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 20 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Adriana and Kelli – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Pines Family Chiropractic and it’s at 9841 Pines Blvd. Our phone number is 954-435-4380. Call Adriana or Kelli for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.PinesFamily.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at Pinesfamilychiro@bellsouth. net. – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $47. P.P.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

ONeONONeBYliZ A paul mitchell select sAlon What makes One on One by Liz different? Well, besides the training I received at Paul Mitchell and the technical part the fact that every single guest gets their own privacy with no fast pace, loud noise of a regular salon. Most importantly my full attention in every appointment and every service done at One on One by Liz. Also it is not about what I think the guest should get but it is more about what they want for that appointment and that is where communication plays an important part. I am trying to build a relationship with every single guest that sits in my chair which for myself as a stylist is one of the most important things to have.

he Southwest Regional Library offers many ways for kids, teens and adults to stay busy all year long. There are on-going programs, as well as a variety of special events. All activities are free. Storybook Adventures – The pre-school program, for ages 4-6 years old, meets every Tuesday, from 11am-11:30am. This literacy program is intended to help children transition to independence in a group setting without their families. It incorporates stories, music, activities and crafts. Miss Joyce, children’s librarian, carefully plans programs that target the developmental stages of 4-6 year olds. Learning & Growing Together – The early literacy story time for toddlers, ages one to three years old, meets twice every Thursday, from 10:30am-11am and 11:15am-11:45am. With a strong early literacy focus, it is designed to strengthen parents’ skills as their child’s first teacher. Using creative activities, stories, songs and movement, caregivers learn the six pre-reading skills that little ones need for a successful school experience - print motivation and awareness, letter knowledge, phonological awareness, narrative and vocabulary skills. Parents learn techniques they can use at home between the weekly sessions and the children have fun with Early Learning Librarian Miss Laura. Wags & Tales – The program gives young readers an opportunity to read aloud with one of the pet therapy dogs that visit on the second and fourth Saturdays every month, from 10:30am–11:30am. The children build confidence in reading and are motivated as they interact with the gentle dogs. Call to make an appointment for an upcoming Saturday with Lola the Rottweiler or Buddy the Beagle. Youth Chess Club – The club meets on the first and third Saturday of each month, from 10:30am—12pm. It is for children, ages 6-18, from beginners through advanced players. They can begin to learn the game or just play for fun. Chess sets are provided. Registration required. Summer Break Spot – From June 5 to August 17, free lunches are available for youth 18 years old and younger, from 12:30-1:30pm, or as long as they last.
▸▸ 12th Annual Mother’s Day Tea Party – On May 13, don’t miss the Mother’s Day Tea Party, from 10:30am– 12noon, for 1-6 year olds and their families. There will be songs, treats and a special performance for mommies, daddies and other special adults in your children’s lives. Come dressed in your best and bring a camera for family photo opportunities. Light refreshments will be served. No registration is needed for the free event. In May, the complete calendar of all of the summer activities at Broward County Libraries will available, including many programs at Southwest Regional. Look for it online at www.Broward.org/Library/Summer or pick one up at the Youth Services desk in mid-May. A special preview of the program calendar will be available at the Mother’s Day Tea Party. “Reading during the summer is vitally important for children, in order to prevent the drop in academic skills that occurs every summer while children aren’t in school,” said Lynn Morrison, youth services librarian supervisor for Southwest Regional Library. “You can prevent this by keeping your children engaged in reading and learning. Broward public libraries are here to help!” The Southwest Regional Library is located at 16835 Sheridan Street. For information on any of these programs, call the Youth Services desk at 954-357-6733, or send an email to Lamorrison@ broward.org.

Join in the Fun at the Mayor’s Chess Challenge COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
C
hess has long been regarded as a game that can have beneficial effects on learning and development, especially when it is played from a young age. On May 20, school-aged chess players of all skill levels and ages are invited to exercise their minds, as they compete against elected officials and one another in the Mayor’s Chess Challenge. Guests will enjoy playing chess with Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis, Pembroke Pines City Commissioners and officials from Broward County in support of Scholastic Chess. The event will be held from 9am-11am, at the Pembroke Lakes Club 19 Restaurant, 10500 Taft Street in Pembroke Pines. “Chess is a great game,” said Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “The Mayor’s Chess Challenge promotes critical and creative thinking in our young people.” The Mayors’ Chess Challenge is a free program designed to bring attention to the benefits of chess in both the academic environment and in the community. The challenge is held in collaboration with the National Scholastic Chess Foundation and several other municipalities in Broward County. Over 100 kids typically attend. Sunrise Mayor Ryan and Pembroke Pines Mayor Ortis played a game at last year’s Chess Challenge.
Many of the students are members of elementary, middle and high school chess clubs throughout Broward. Each month, the challenge rotates to different cities in the area. Recent challenges have been held in Hallandale Beach, Wilton Manors, Cooper City, Coral Springs, Lauderhill, Tamarac and Davie. Kids receive a passport that gets stamped for each month they attend. Those with perfect attendance from all the challenges will receive a prize at the end of the season. The Pembroke Pines event is the last Chess Challenge for the 2016-2017 season. Fifteen-year-old Justin Silvers has been playing chess for the past four years. He plans to attend the April challenge. “Chess is the ultimate game of the mind,” said Justin. “I am looking forward to meeting some other kids who also love the game, so I can play against them after school and on the weekends.” Photo (l to r): Broward County Schools Dr. Mark Straus, School Board Member Patti Good, Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank Ortis, The Chess Lady, Sunrise Mayor Michael Ryan and Pembroke Pines Commissioner Jay Schwartz with some players at last year’s Chess Challenge.

T
here are currently over 345,064 year-round Broward seniors. Every year in May, the nation celebrates Older Americans Month to recognize older Americans for their contributions and provide them with information to help them stay healthy and active. On May 23 and 24, they will have access to a variety of resources at the 36th Annual Broward Aging Network Conference (BANC), which will be held at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus, 301 NW 103rd Avenue. On both days, registration and exhibits will be held from 8am-9am and sessions will be held from 9am-3:30pm. “It is a great place to find out about resources in Broward County,” said 71-year-old Norma Wilson, who has attended for the past five years. “Each year, I discover something new and beneficial. It is also a chance to meet some new people and share information.” The conference is presented by the Aging & Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Broward County. Over 300 seniors, community advocates, and professionals usually participate in the educational experience. Sessions include an array of topics, including: Alzheimer’s Disease, Legislation Matters; Adult Day Care; and various other topics relating to the aging population. This year, there is a new

Advances in Mammography: Fighting Cancer in 3D Maria Artze, MD, a Cleveland Clinic Florida radiologist who specializes in breast imaging. “Having these various images reduces the challenge of seeing areas where tissues overlap, and so improves the radiologist’s ability to detect breast cancer.”
Maria Artze, MD
Breast Cancer Radiologist
Cassann Blake, MD Breast Surgeon
Regular screening mammograms, which create two-dimensional views of the breast, can reduce cancer death by 30 percent. But newer technology that creates threedimensional (3D) mammograms offers important advantages, including greater detection of breast cancers that cannot be seen using those traditional mammograms. In one study of almost 13,000 women, use of 3D mammograms resulted in a 40 percent increase in detection of invasive breast cancer. This new technology is available at both Cleveland Clinic Florida’s academic medical center in Weston, as well as the West Palm Beach location. The 3D mammogram is also called breast tomosynthesis. “Tomosynthesis gathers images of the breast from several different angles, to create a series that forms the 3D image,” says
The technology makes it possible for the first time for radiologists to see a 3D image of the breast. Because of the high level of detail it provides, the images also highlight masses and abnormalities that conventional mammograms might miss. “In images of the breast, dense tissue appears white, and cancer appears white,” says Cassann Blake, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida breast surgeon. “Tomography gives us much more detail compared to other types of mammograms. Especially for women with dense breast tissue, this detail is important.” For the patient during the screening, the procedure will be familiar to other mammograms they’ve had. The only difference is that part of the equipment moves in an arc around the breast, instead of staying stationary. Studies also show that with tomosynthesis, fewer patients need to return for additional mammograms, visits that can cause stress and expense, plus exposure to additional radiation. Research further shows this procedure provides a 15 percent decrease in the number of “false positives,” where tissue looks cancerous but through biopsy (tissue
sample) or another exam is later found to be normal. So 3D mammograms can also help women avoid unnecessary biopsies. “Early detection of breast cancer is a key area that we want to highlight,” Dr. Blake says. “Offering the advantages of the 3D mammogram is part of our goal to provide our patients with the best quality of care. Talk to your doctor about whether a 3D mammogram is best for you.” For a consultation with a Cleveland Clinic Florida breast specialist, call 866.213.5789 or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/breastcancer for more information.

Panther Run Elementary School Principal Is the Best in Broward County
SCHOOL NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
Elaine Saef with Superintendent Robert W. Runcie (left), School Board members and BrightStar Credit Union Vice President of Operations Dennis Leiva.
B
roward County Public Schools recently honored its best at the 2017 Caliber Awards Ceremony, which recognizes the exemplary leadership, hard work and dedication of the District’s outstanding teachers, principals, assistant principals and school-related/District employees. There were six finalists for Principal of the Year and Elaine Saef, principal of Panther Run Elementary School in Pembroke Pines, was named the winner. “I cannot begin to describe how honored and proud I am to represent the principals of Broward County Schools and Panther Run Elementary as the Broward Schools Caliber Award Principal of the Year for 2017,” said Saef. “The night was incredible! My students, staff, parents and family made it so special with the pink bandanas and all of their support. I am so honored to serve as the leader of the best school in Broward! Panther Run, you rock!” Saef began her career with Broward County Public Schools in 1989. She held a variety of positions before becoming principal of Panther Run Elementary ten years ago. Her philosophy is student and teacher centered. She firmly believes that all students can and will learn if we teach them. She is known for creating and implementing programs and activities that motivate and inspire teachers to educate students to achieve their highest potential.
“I believe it is our job as educators to teach all students,” said Saef. “We need to find the way a child learns – visually, auditorily, tactily, technologically, etc. - and meet their individual needs.” When Saef became principal, her number one priority was to create and foster a positive school culture of caring, kindness and nurturing in which all students, parents, and staff could flourish, learn and grow. She created PIF-WIAMAD, which stands for “Pay It Forward!” and “Who I Am Makes A Difference!” She challenges the students and loves to be challenged in return. For example, after students have met reading and charitable fundraising goals, she has kissed a horse and been slimed, silly stringed and duct taped to a wall. “This philosophy has proven to be effective in developing a caring culture in our school and community,” said Saef. “’Pay it forward!’ refers to repaying the good deeds one has received by doing good things for other unrelated people. “Who I Am Makes A Difference” is a philosophy that we all are important and make a difference in the lives of others by our actions, words, feelings and just being who we are. It is our job to make the world a better place than we grew up in and to make a positive difference.”

Our last free Jazz in the Pines concert before the summer break begins will be on Sunday, May 21, from 5pm to 7pm, at the William B. Armstrong Dream Park, located at 1700 NW 160 Ave. (Dykes Road). This is a perfect time to enjoy the sounds of jazz in a beautiful setting. Bring blankets and chairs for seating. Relax and appreciate this picturesque park. And, we are almost upon Memorial Day. While many think of this day as the start of summer, it really is a day set aside to honor all the men and women who have died in military service for our country. On Monday, May 29, the City of Pembroke Pines will hold a day of remembrance from 9am to 10:30am, at the Fletcher Art and Culture Center, located at 7900 Johnson Street. This is a solemn occasion to which we hope everyone will attend to honor our brave men and women in the military. These are just a few of the many activities and programs we offer throughout the city. Be sure to check out our Facebook page, YouTube channel, Instagram, City Connect newspaper and website (www.ppines.com) for more information. Mona Lisa Touch
E
ven with the passage of time, many women still retain their youthful energy and enthusiasm, but post-menopausal changes can affect a woman’s quality of life in unexpected ways. Now, there is a gentle laser therapy that can help millions of women who are silently suffering. What is the MonaLisa Touch? The MonaLisa Touch is a gentle laser therapy that delivers controlled energy to the vaginal wall tissue. It restores vaginal health by generating new collagen, elastin and vascularization. The MonaLisa Touch was first available outside the U.S. where thousands of patients have been treated worldwide. How does it work? The MonaLisa Touch uses gentle laser energy that is delivered via a side-firing probe inserted into the vaginal canal. A two-part pulse targets surface (epithelial) tissue and deep (lamina propria) tissue to promote vaginal mucosal revitalization. What clinical trials have been conducted on the MonaLisa Touch? A multisite study was conducted by Dr. Mickey Karram, Director of Fellowship Program on Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Dr. Eric Sokol, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Stanford University Medical Center. The trial assessed the use of CO2 fractional laser therapy on 30 women with vaginal health issues due to natural or induced menopause. All of the patients in the trial were treated with the MonaLisa Touch laser therapy. The results were: ▸▸ Overwhelmingly positive and immediate results ▸▸ ·Highly statistically significant improvement in symptoms after first treatment ▸▸ Escalation of progress with each subsequent treatment In addition to the multisite study, there are currently eight published studies with six ongoing studies. Does the procedure hurt? The procedure requires no anesthesia. Some patients may experience some discomfort the first time the probe is inserted, but the actual treatment is not painful. Many patients report that it feels like a gentle vibration. How long does it take? Patients receive three treatments, spaced six weeks apart, which each take less than five minutes to perform. When will I see results? Most patients feel improvement after the very first treatment, although the procedure calls for three treatments that are generally spaced over an 18-week period. How long does it last? Patients should expect to come back annually for a maintenance treatment. The doctor will determine if follow up treatments are required. What are my limitations after the procedure is done? Patients should refrain from sexual activity for two to three days. Your doctor will determine a post-procedure regimen that is right for you. For which patients is this treatment appropriate? The MonaLisa Touch is appropriate for any female suffering from issues from a decline in estrogen, as well as those who are experiencing symptoms as a result of a hysterectomy or breast cancer treatments. Is this procedure safe for women with breast cancer? Yes, the MonaLisa Touch therapy is particularly well suited for patients who cannot, or prefer not to receive estrogen therapy. Will the procedure be covered by insurance? No processing code has been established. LEGALLY SPEAKING
How Do I Prepare for My Mediation? BY MAYLEIDYS PORRASPITA, ESQUIRE FLORIDA SUPREME COURT CERTIFIED COUNTY COURT AND FAMILY LAW MEDIATOR
M
ediation has been proven to be an effective process that can help even the most adversarial of participants. The American Arbitration Association has indicated that more than 85% of cases resolve prior to trial. Mediation can save the participants money, time and stress. The process, however, is not without any costs and arriving at mediation prepared can make the difference between resolution and additional expense. If you are facing a dispute or facing a potential divorce and considering mediation, keep these recommendations in mind. Gather documentation. When preparing to attend mediation, you will likely receive nothing more than just a Notice of Mediation advising you of the date, time and place of the mediation. However, in order to make the most use of your time during the mediation, you should bring all the documentation that relates to your case. In the event of a contract dispute, bring the contract. If you are attending divorce mediation, bring paystubs, as well as a list of all assets and debts. Make a list of questions. Upon arriving at the mediation, the Mediator will make opening statements, cover the process of mediation and discuss what you can expect. The participants are also given an opportunity make their own opening statements. During this time, it is very possible that you will hear things that you don’t agree with. In order to avoid getting upset and forgetting important things you want to discuss or include in your settlement, make a comprehensive list of what you want and what you are willing to live without. When making your list, consider all possible options, alternatives and creative ideas. Listen. Listen. Listen. During the mediation process there will be times that you don’t agree with the position taken by the other. There might be things the other person did that can’t be undone or resolved at the mediation as often happens in situations where trust has been broken. However, in order to reach a possible agreement you will need to be an attentive listener. It is hard to listen to someone that you don’t agree with but in order to get to a resolution you will need to give consideration to the other party. Listening to the other party will allow you to determine what they want. That will help you and the mediator achieve what you want. Keep an open mind. Mediation is a voluntary process and the participants are not obligated to reach a resolution. However, unlike litigation, the goal of mediation is to resolve the matter without leaving your future in the judge’s hands. This requires each side to move from their position and find a common ground. Keeping an open mind on what you want and how to achieve it will enable you to move when needed without compromising your bottom line. Be selective with your Mediator. In every mediation you will have the participants (two or more sides) and the neutral Mediator. The Mediator is in charge of making everyone feel comfortable and at ease in order to mediate. Who you select as the Mediator is a major component of the success of the mediation. The “wrong” Mediator can end negotiations before they even begin. A Mediator with the right personality will assist in getting the parties to a resolution. Additionally, the Mediator should be knowledgeable in the area of law that you are mediating. A mediator that is an attorney in the field or an expert in the field will best able to provide you options and viable solutions. If you are facing a problem than can potential lead you to court, consider mediation and all the options that this alternative mode of dispute resolution can provide. May Porraspita is an attorney and Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Law and County Court Mediator. The Law Offices of Mayleidys Porraspita, P.A. are located in Pembroke Pines. If you have any questions regarding the matter discussed in the article above or any other questions or concern, call our office at 800-492-5455. HABLAMOS ESPANOL.

The Toughest Decision BY EVAN BARON
I
have been practicing law for over 35 years. I realized many years ago that allowing a judge or jury to make a decision in a case is always a last resort. Cases that ultimately proceed to trial involve either issues that cannot be compromised or individuals who can be unreasonable in their expectations. If you proceed to trial, your ability to control your destiny is severely compromised. You are allowing a third party to dictate the terms and conditions of your future. I can assure you that Judges much prefer to approve a settlement reached by the parties than to decide the fate of individuals. Judges often tell the respective parties that they will always be better off deciding the case between themselves, rather that have he/she decide some of these issues. They are further informed that a judge’s job is to be fair and equitable, which means that after the trial is over both parties usually leave the courthouse unhappy, neither obtaining what they were seeking. Of course that is not always true. There are obviously times when parties’ expectations are within reason and the results obtained at trial are satisfactory.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.
So how do you know when you should settle versus the alternative of going to trial? That is sometimes a very difficult question to answer. A lawyer can never guarantee results. A lawyer can advise a client about the law as it applies to the facts of his/her case. Often times judges have a great deal of discretion in their decision making, which makes any kind of prediction that much more difficult. Lawyers also assume that a judge will interpret the law as the lawyer interprets it. That is not always the case. When offers or counter-offers are unreasonable and one-sided, it is somewhat easy to make a decision. If you have nothing to lose by going to trail, and your worst result in court is still better than the offer being made, it is an easy decision. The cases which present the more difficult decisions are the one’s which result in offers which are perhaps fair but not quite what a person may envision as their end result. Perhaps the time sharing schedule with the minor children is not quite what was envisioned or the alimony amount is more than you expected to pay. Do you compromise or litigate? There is no easy answer. Each case needs to be looked at independently. A party must consider all possibilities. Cost and time are two important factors. A case which proceeds to trial will always take longer to conclude. The cost will always be greater. I suggest hiring an experienced trail attorney who can assist you in deciding the best way to conclude your case. There really is no substitute for experience. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

Impingement Syndromes in Dancers BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA
Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a foot and ankle surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. His partners are Dr. Robert Sheinberg, Dr. Al DeSimone, Dr. Fernando Moya, Dr. Alexander Bertot, Dr. Mark Fishman, Dr. David Shenassa, Dr. Nathan Vela and Dr. Michael Cohen. ASK THE EXPERT
P
ain in the front or back of the ankle can occur from a dancer standing “en point” or “demi point”. Pain behind the ankle is due to a bone prominence that pinches the soft tissue or due to a fractured bone or cartilage in the back of the ankle (Os Trigonum). A deep pain in the back of the ankle is felt and is made worse if the foot points down. Treatment includes rest, physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medication. If the pain does not improve, a Cortisone injection is given to decrease inflammation and scar tissue. Unresolved pain may be treated surgically, thus allowing a full return to dance. The back of the ankle is cleaned out and a small piece of bone may be removed with arthroscopic surgery to allow the dancer to return to full activity. Rarely an open procedure is needed. Pain in the front of the ankle is usually caused by thickening of the ankle joint lining and can cause pain while moving the leg forward on the foot. This impingement syndrome is usually associated with an ankle ligament injury and can become very painful, especially the first thing in the morning when getting out of bed to walk or after sitting for a short period of time and getting up to walk. The inflammation and soreness usually lessen with activity but return later in the day. Physical therapy and a short course of anti-inflammatory medication may be necessary to reduce the inflammation in the ankle joint. If that does not improve, a Cortisone injection may be necessary to reduce the thickening of the soft tissue. In some cases, the impingement in the front part of the ankle does not improve and arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to completely regain the ankle mobility without discomfort. In some cases, a small spur is present on the front part of the lower leg bone. This can cause chronic pain and stiffness in the ankle. If present, arthroscopic removal of the bone spur is also performed to allow the dancer to resume activity. Prognosis is excellent with full return to dancing with proper treatment.

T
he old adage “you are what you eat” is especially true when it comes to your skin. Patients are often unaware of the fact that the skin is the largest organ in the body. As such, we need to make appropriate dietary choices to enhance the appearance of our skin. The same way we choose heart-healthy foods and liver cleansing diets. It has been shown that midlife women with the most youthful looking skin also have the most Vitamin C in their diets. Vitamin C is essential for the cross-linking, or building of collagen, the support structure that keeps your skin’s surface smooth. Young-looking women also tend to eat less saturated fat and fewer carbohydrates, and have higher levels of linoleic acid, an Omega-6 fatty acid found mainly in nuts and dark, leafy green vegetables like spinach and kale. Ellagic acid, found primarily in pomegranates and red berries, is another wrinkle-fighter. This compound has also been known to reduce inflammation from sun damage exposure and reduces collagen breakdown. Other foods that have been shown to improve the appearance of the skin include salmon, particularly the wild caught variety like King, Sockeye, and Coho Salmon, often seasonably available. I would discourage one from eating the farm-raised variety, as the mercury levels may be high unless it comes from an organic fishery. Salmon not only contains high levels of Omega 3 fatty acids beneficial to your skin and heart, but also astaxanthin, a carotenoid that improves skin elasticity. Green tea provides anti-aging plant polyphenols that may help your skin when you drink it and apply it topically. Egg yolks, avocados, lentils, chickpeas and beans (including soybeans) all fight dryness in the skin. Other antioxidants, such as goji berries and acai berries found in juices and supplements, enable your body to fight inflammation causing free radicals which are generated as a result of sun damage. In addition to the foods I have mentioned, plant sterols are beneficial not only to your skin, but also help lower LDL cholesterol. Sterols are found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains and beans. These substances limit your body’s ability to absorb cholesterol from food. Plastic surgery can dramatically enhance the appearance of your skin through laser or chemical resurfacing, skin excision or injectable therapy, but to keep your skin looking and feeling smooth, consuming essential nutrients through your diet may be just as beneficial over the long term. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care. LEGALLY SPEAKING
No Estate Plan? You Are Not Alone. BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
W
ould you be surprised to learn that as many as 60% of all American adults have no estate plan in place? The distribution of their property, the care and custody of their minor children and the identification of who directs the administration of their estate is left to the default laws of intestate succession created by the state of Florida. So in simple terms: if you do not have a will or trust, the state will make all your decisions for you. Another estate planning fact is that on average those people who do have an estate plan revise or update their documents every 15+ years. Imagine if you have done your estate plan in 1999 and never updated it. How different are your financial and personal circumstances now? Would the choices you made, the people you identified, and the concerns you addressed, still be appropriate today? Probably not.

Estate planning is often viewed as a process undertaken to plan for the orderly and efficient transfer of assets at death. A broader viewpoint is that estate planning is life planning, encompassing disability, retirement and creditor protection, as well as who gets what after you are gone. For those with minor children, your planning should address the support of yourself, your spouse and your children, if you become disabled. It should provide a source of funds for children’s education, day care and medical expenses, as well as for the regular expenses of running your household. For parents of adult children, do you trust that all of your heirs will not recklessly spend their inheritance? Do you have any concerns that their inheritance may be lost to creditors or in a divorce? Do you have an adult child with special needs? Are you a small business owner? Have you considered what might happen to your business after you are gone? Do you have a business succession plan or buy/sell agreement in place? A proper estate plan should allow you to control your property while you are alive and well. It should also provide for you and your family if you become disabled. And it should allow you to give what you have to whom you want, in the way you want, all while minimizing the taxes, professional fees and costs to your loved ones. If you do not have an estate plan, or if your plan requires revision, I recommend that you meet with a qualified estate planning attorney. Once you have an estate plan, I urge you to review it every two to three years to make sure it still meets your needs. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. For more information, or to schedule a consultation with Mr. Iden, contact Iden Law Offices at 954-885-0085.

ATTORNEY AT LAW
The Latest Scoop on the Real Estate Market BY PATRICK SIMM
REAL ESTATE
A
s we find ourselves rapidly moving towards mid-year, you’re probably wondering what’s currently happening in the real estate arena. Surprisingly, approximately three quarters of the consumers that I have the opportunity to chat with on a daily basis are of the belief that we are still in a strong seller’s market. If you are a current seller, chances are that you know the true story of the current market. If you’re “For Sale” and not selling, read on… Homes priced at market value and in good condition still sell quickly - sometimes within days. The key is that it must be priced correctly from the onset! Yes, buyers, although not rampant, are still around. Strangely, with the inventory of homes for sale still low, buyers are “sitting on the fence,” seemingly not in a hurry and are being more selective in their search. Bank property appraisals have become more of a concern as a result of the continued shortage of “available homes for sale” dilemma that we are currently faced with. A number of buyers have a tendency to use the strategy of paying the asking price for properties of their liking, knowing that the appraisal will most likely fall short and, in turn, hoping that the sellers will reduce the price to that of the appraisal. The setback arises when sellers refuse to budge and are adamant on accepting anything less than the asking price, resulting in a standoff between buyer and seller that typically leads to a failed transaction.

Interest rates, although on the rise, are still historically low and still very affordable. Current interest rates shouldn’t be a deterring factor in your home purchasing decision at this point in time. For most of the past 50 years, homebuyers would have been elated to get mortgage rates in the four percent range being offered at this time. Rising interest rates will likely decrease one’s home-buying power and price some buyers out of the market. It is worthy to note that that for every percent rise in the interest rate, a buyer’s purchasing power decreases a by approximately 10 percent. Let me shift gears in my final thought and touch on the state of the Miami condo market. Greater Miami has over 6,000 condos under construction with almost 14,000 proposed. Of these, almost 3,500 of them are expected to be delivered in 2017. To say that the condo market is in imminent chaos is an understatement! With sales plummeting, inventory for sale increasing, and new supply saturating the market, expect a decrease in prices and a soft condo market for the next several years to come. Expect a “softening” market, not a “crashing” market, as cash buyers have driven most of these purchases since we went through the housing bust approximately seven years ago.
