New Year Brings New Beginnings
N
ew Year’s Day serves as a point in time for many of us to make a change; our New Year’s Resolutions. These resolutions, big and small, can be a helpful way for people to motivate themselves to improve their lives in a positive way. Like many people, our New Year’s Resolutions are focused on living healthier lives: we want to exercise more, eat healthier, and sleep better. To achieve these goals, we must develop new healthy habits. William James, a turn-of-the-century psychologist, was one of the first researchers to study habit forming. He discovered three keys to establishing a new habit: (i) Creating an environment to reinforce the behavior you are seeking; (ii) Sticking to the new routine until the habit is fully formed; (iii) Acting now, without delay. For our resolution to get healthy, we have dedicated Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings to working out. We have pledged to make sure we don’t miss a day, at least for the first two months of the year. If you have a New Year’s Resolution, block out the time, don’t let anyone or anything interfere with your focus, and, in the words of the Nike slogan, Just do it! Wishing you a Happy & Healthy New Year! Sincerely,
Terry & Christy Jaillet Co-Presidents and Publishers

Sunrise Fire-Rescue Participates in Home Fire Preparedness Campaign SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS
BY JILL SHARPE
M
ore than 40 volunteers from the Broward County Chapter of the American Red Cross joined Sunrise Fire-Rescue, successfully installing over 300 smoke alarms in 158 Sunrise homes as teams went door-todoor in an area of about 800 homes in November. The event was the third in Sunrise since the American Red Cross launched the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign in 2014. By providing free smoke alarms to those who may not be able to obtain and install them on their own, the program aims to reduce the number of fire-related deaths and injuries in the US by 25% by the year 2020. To date, nearly 500,000 smoke alarms have been installed across the country under the program, which has been credited for 111 people escaping home fires after being alerted by the alarms received. Saturday’s event brought the total number of alarms installed in Sunrise through the program to about 600. “Smoke alarms play such an important role in protecting your family and your home in the event of a fire,” said Sunrise Fire-Rescue Chief Thomas DiBernardo. “We’re happy for the opportunity to partner with the Red Cross and bring this life-saving program to Sunrise residents, and we are committed to get as many households covered as we can.” For ongoing safety tips and news from Sunrise Fire-Rescue, please visit www.sunrisefl.gov/fire
Plantation Residents Enjoy 48th Annual Holiday Parade BY JILL SHARPE
T
hree thousand residents packed the streets for the 48th Annual “It’s A Wonderful Life” Holiday Parade on November 19th. This year’s parade, presented by The Fountains and Westfield Broward, helped to get residents in the holiday spirit with marching units, choruses, bands and floats. “The parade is one of Plantation’s favorite family holiday traditions,” said Siobhan Edwards, President and Executive Director of the Plantation Chamber of Commerce. “The Chamber really enjoys partnering with the City to facilitate this event each year.” This year’s parade started with vehicles and floats at the corner of Broward Boulevard and 441. Walking units and marching bands joined in at East Acre Drive and Broward Boulevard. The streets were packed with people cheering on their friends, children and coworkers. There were City leaders, civic and social groups and lots of entertainment. As always, the parade ended with a visit from Santa Claus who met with his admirers at Westfield Broward according to Edwards. “It’s always so much fun to see children of all ages enjoy this event,” she said. “After all, Plantation is really all about family.”

Miss ARC Pageant Makes Dreams Come True for Girls with Disabilities COMMUITY NEWS
BY JILL SHARPE
O
n November 13th, twenty girls with disabilities took to the stage at the historic Parker Playhouse to compete in the fourth annual Miss ARC Broward Pageant. Margaux Grimmel was named Miss ARC Broward 2017 and Samantha Bash was named Little Miss ARC Broward 2017. Their families, friends and nearly 1,000 community supporters were there to celebrate the occasion. “The Miss ARC pageant does far more than showcase the beauty of our special population of girls,” says Margaux’s mother, Kimberly Grimmel. “It allows our girls to access something just a small fraction of the general population gets to do. The girls leave this positive experience with enduring self esteem and confidence.” Each contestant had the opportunity to show off their talents during the personality round presented by SunTrust Bank, and to shine in the eveningwear and interview rounds presented by Sharon Stiles. The real beauty of this pageant is that everyone’s a winner, and no one leaves the pageant empty-handed. Each contestant participated in a chain of pre-pageant events throughout the fall including an ice cream social, Tanya Bower’s Afternoon Tea Party presented by Stiles Corporation, The Eppy Group’s Facebook Fan Favorite Contest, and Casbah Spa and Salon’s spa day. This event has not only changed the lives of the participants, it has brought the community together for a celebration of support and acceptance of people with unique abilities. Proceeds from the event will support ARC Broward’s initiatives
which provide the encouragement and opportunities that create life-challenging outcomes so that people with disabilities and other life challenges can reach their full potential. Since its inception, the pageant has nearly tripled in size. This year’s event had more than 50 corporate and individual community partners including Presenting sponsor Holland and Knight, RSM US LLP, Sharon Stiles, SunTrust Bank, Stiles Corporation, Breakthru Beverage, Right Management, Publix Super Market Charities, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Ultimate Software, Phil Smith Auto, The Eppy Group, Katie and Molly Adler, Casbah Spa and Salon, Berman Law Group, Lee and Ana Brushingham, City Furniture, Community Care Plan, Cindy DeSantis, Diversified Window Solutions, The Eaton Family, Etiquette Boutiques, Gray Robinson, Rip Kersey, Mombach, Boyle, Hardin, and Simmons, PA, Ocello Automotive, Paterson Project Management, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Stonegate Bank, The Travisano Family, Tripp Scott, WBS Technologies, Wild, Felice and Partners, PA. Galleria Fort Lauderdale, Gary Arenson, Polin Public Relations , SHADES Kids, and Park Shore Drug. ARC Broward is still accepting donations. Simply text the word “CROWN” to 91999, to help support the 21 services and programs that help people with disabilities and other life challenges realize their full potential.
Special Movie Screening at Plantation Synagogue Aims to Change the Way Girls Are Valued BY JILL SHARPE
R
abbi Howard Needleman at Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El in Plantation is proud to support and encourage the efforts of the young people in his congregation in all they do to make the world a better place. One of his young congregants who is passionate about making a difference is Cate Kapp, a thirteen-year-old who has been inspired by Girl Rising, a global campaign for girls’ education and empowerment. The mission of Girl Rising is to change the way the world values girls and ensure that girls’ education is part of the mainstream conversation. Girl Rising seeks to bring visibility to the issues girls face and inspire people to dismantle the barriers that hold them back. They also focus on getting girls in school through ENGAGE - a dynamic public-partnership in India, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria. Kapp first learned about the Girl Rising movement when she watched a revolutionary CNN film that follows the life stories of nine girls from the developing world who struggle every day for freedom, education and a voice in their home countries. Kapp, who first watched the film with her parents, learned that 66 million girls in the world are not able to receive an education. “I could not get that number out of my mind,” said Kapp “I felt for these girls and from that
12
moment on it became personal to me and I felt that I needed to do something to help them. I love school and I can’t imagine being told that I can’t go to school.” To help raise awareness and funds for Girl Rising, Kapp asked Rabbi Needleman if he would agree to host a screening of the film at the Temple. Rabbi Needleman quickly agreed and a date was set. Reilly Corbett, Development Officer for Girl Rising, said the organization is moved by Kapp’s passion and determination to change the world. “We know that grassroots activities are key to helping us impact the lives of millions of girls around the world, but it’s young people like Cate that are particularly inspiring. She gives us hope that a world where all girls are empowered is possible.” The very special movie screening of Girl Rising is open to the entire community. The film will be shown at Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El on January 17th at 6:00 p.m. A light bite and a short Q & A discussion will follow the film. Admission is $18 and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to Girl Rising. RSVP to Cate Kapp at CateforGirlRising@gmail.com.

The Gentle Gynecology & Obstetrics Family Expands Dr. Michael Augustino & Dr. Fabienne Achille Welcome Dr. Leonardo Catalano BY STACEY BOMSER
Dr. Achille: I am a South Florida native. I was born at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital and, coincidentally, that is where I completed my residency. I chose to be an OB/GYN because I enjoy that I have a broad mix of patients. In one day, I can see patients in my office, do a delivery and also do minimally invasive gynecological surgery. Each day is different and I love being able to be a part of the many phases of life women go through.
Dr. Augustino, Dr. Achille and Dr. Catalano each bring a unique perspective to the field of gynecology and obstetrics. The three share more about their backgrounds and contributions to the practice, which has been voted Best OB/GYN practice in Best of Weston for the past nine years.
Dr. Augustino: I enjoy the relationships I have built with my patients over the years. I’ve been in practice long enough that I’m now delivering the grandchildren of some of my original patients. Just the other day, I was making rounds at the hospital and saw a new mom who I had actually delivered. That speaks volumes for the level of care we provide our patients that we have multi-generational families visiting our practice.
What is Gentle Gynecology & Obstetrics? Dr. Augustino: I have been practicing medicine in South Florida for the past 30 years. About eight years ago, I left the world of corporate medicine to open my own private practice. After a few years, it had grown so much I was able to bring on an associate, Dr. Achille. We are now both pleased to welcome Dr. Catalano. We are confident his background and surgical expertise will complement that of Dr. Achille and myself and allow us to provide an expanded scope of services to our patients. Can you please share a bit about your background and why you choose this field? Dr. Catalano: Although new to Gentle Gynecology & Obstetrics, I have been in practice for the past four years in the Plantation area. I graduated from the Ponce School of Medicine in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I completed my residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at San Juan City Hospital, and did my internship at St. Luke’s Memorial Hospital. I chose obstetrics and gynecology because it allows me to care for patients throughout their lifespan, from adolescence through childbearing years and well beyond. I am one of the few physicians to provide adolescent gynecological services. I see patients as young as nine years old with pelvic pain, menstruation issues, or malformation.
You all have different backgrounds, so what unique perspectives do you bring to the practice? Dr. Achille: As a female, I can relate to a lot of what patients are going through. Having children myself and going through labor, I can share true experiences that may help many nervous first time moms. I can be that voice for some moms with teenage girls who are thinking or have explored having sex. And, a lot of times, I can be that girlfriend that you just need to talk to. Dr. Catalano: I grew up in Puerto Rico and speak fluent Spanish. Being bilingual allows me to communicate clearly in the first language of many patients, which certainly helps put them at ease. Dr. Augustino: Having been in practice for 30 years, many of my patients have experienced menopause, which brings up the issue of hormone replacement. Our practice was the first in the area to offer bio-identical hormone treatment, for both men and women. What are the benefits of bio-identical hormone therapy? Dr. Augustino: Natural hormone replacement is safer, healthier and has far less side effects than synthetic hormones and delivers better results. Unlike traditional prescription drugs, natural hormone replacement therapy is tailored to the individual patient. Dosage is based on actual lab work, as well as weight and age, so each patient has a personalized treatment plan. I measure those parameters at each office visit and can alter the dosage accordingly. I want to point out that bio-identical hormones are natural. Patients need not fear. There are no risks of cancer, stroke, heart attack or clotting like people feared from synthetic hormones. How is technology changing the field of gynecology? Dr. Achille: With more women working fulltime, it becomes more difficult to take time to take care of ourselves. With the pressure of having to take as little time off as possible, a lot of treatments for common gynecological issues such as heavy bleeding and pelvic pain can now be treated with medications or minimally invasive procedures. Hospital stays are now shorter and patients are in less pain.

FEATURE STORY
D
r. Michael Augustino, Dr. Fabienne Achille and the staff at Gentle Gynecology & Obstetrics are excited to announce that Dr. Leonardo Catalano has joined the practice. All three physicians are committed to delivering personalized patient care to women of all ages, from adolescence to post-menopause. Now, with an additional doctor on staff, the practice is able to expand its areas of expertise to better serve patients.
Dr. Catalano: New technology, such as the Davinci robot, are allowing us to perform minimally invasive procedures either in our office or at an outpatient surgical center, which offer patients a faster recovery time allowing women to get back to their normal lifestyle sooner. What technical skills do you offer? Dr. Catalano: I specialize in minimally invasive robotic surgery for complicated gynecological issues including pelvic surgery, labioplasty and vaginal reconstruction. Dr. Achille: I am certified in robotic surgery and the Mona Lisa Touch. It is an alternative option for women who cannot use hormones, such as women with breast cancer, who have vaginal dryness, frequent urine infections and pain with sex. What other services does Gentle Gynecology & Obstetrics provide? Dr. Augustino: Our services include, but are not limited to: obstetrics offering complete prenatal care; in-office ultrasound; annual well-woman exams; menopause care; family planning and contraceptive counseling; in-office lab testing; mammography and bone-density screening; and surgical procedures and alternatives. Do all three of you offer obstetric care? Dr. Augustino: Absolutely! The joy of bringing a baby into the world is one of the reasons all three of us went into this field. Our practice specializes in personalized patient care and nowhere is that more important than during pregnancy. Throughout the course of prenatal care, patients have the opportunity to meet the other doctors, but you will always have your preferred doctor. All of us cherish and respect that bond between doctor and patient. Dr. Michael Augustino, Dr. Fabienne Achille and Dr. Leonardo Catalano have offices in Weston and Pembroke Pines, with privileges at Memorial Hospital West. The Weston office is located at 1605 Town Center Boulevard. Appointments can be made by calling 954-384-8668. The Pembroke Pines office is located adjacent to the hospital at 603 N. Drone Technology Soars at Inaugural Drone Competition
SCHOOL NEWS
BY JILL SHARPE
M
ore than 80 student pilots filled the air with their individual drones at the Inaugural Drone Competition December 10th in the South Plantation High gymnasium. The competition pitted students from 22 different secondary schools in Broward, Dade, Palm Beach and St. Lucie counties at the first student-run event in Florida. “It’s the first of its kind for high school, and it could grow into something huge,” said junior Matthew Ross of Plantation. “There’s nothing else like drone-flying FPV (First Person View). You are flying while looking through the camera’s perspective.” The day began at 7:00 a.m. with practice runs. After the opening ceremony at 10:00 a.m., the qualifying races began with Division 3 Middle School, then Division 3 High School, followed by Division 2 and, and then Division 1. Finals were after the lunch break with the closing ceremony at 5:00 p.m. Students had the opportunity to select which level to enter. Two drones raced simultaneously in a figure eight route including hoops, lighting, fog and tunnels. Each pilot flew three heats to determine the Quarterfinal, Semi-finals and Final standings. “I think drones are cool because they replicate a video game in the coolest way,” said junior Sorin Slater of Plantation. “It’s exciting to put my skills to the test and fun to race in the competition.” The drone technology and curriculum is only two years old at South Plantation but the students believe it is here to stay. “Drone racing is an exciting experience and working with the new technology that is part of our future is fun,” said junior
Morgan Anderson of Plantation. STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) curriculum encourages students to design and build their innovations using teamwork. “We want to inspire and motivate all Broward County students to pursue STEM related careers through friendly drone competitions,” said Gustavo Junco who coordinated the event with his students. “We hope to make South Florida a hub for the drone industry.” For more information visit www.browarddoneleague.wixsite.com/ bcdl or contact Gustavo Junco, Drone Competition Coordinator at 754-323-1982 or broarddroneleague@outlook.com.

Plantation Resident Has a Passion for Helping Girls All Over the World

BY JILL SHARPE
P
lantation Resident Valeria Hansen is passionate about many things and dreams of a career as a film maker. However, unlike many aspiring artists, Hansen does not seek fame for herself. Her dream is to use film as a platform to advance the causes she cares about. One of those causes is an organization called Girl Up, an initiative of the United Nations Foundation that supports programs that give girls in countries such as Ethiopia, Guatemala, Liberia, Malawi and India, an equal chance for education, health, social and economic opportunities, and a life free from violence. Hansen served as President and Founder of the South Florida Girl Up introducing and expanding the Girl Up campaign in Florida and Latin America. “When I learned about Girl Up, there was only one school club in Florida, and if you didn’t attend that school you couldn’t join,” said Hansen. “I created South Florida Girl Up in 2012, to give every girl from Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties the opportunity to become a leader and help girls in developing countries get an education while serving locally in projects with global and measurable impact, regardless of the school they attend.” During her tenure as President of South Florida Girl Up, Hansen recruited club members and volunteers from 16 schools in the tri-county area to assist in events and legislative meetings. Through her efforts Girl Up was featured in numerous South Florida community events including three years at PhilanthroFest and two years at One Billion Rising Miami. They collected and donated over 100 books and collected and sold 100 dresses on the organiza-

tions website, raising $1,000 for the organization. Hansen and her club also reached out to Florida Representatives and obtained co-sponsorships for the Girls Count Act. In addition, Hansen led South Florida Girl Up in their efforts to deliver 500 advocacy cards, made 70 phone calls, wrote 254 letters and posted more than 700 online call to actions, making up a total of one-third of the actions taken by clubs nationwide. As a result of her work as President of South Florida Girl Up, Hansen was nominated and selected to be a United Nations Foundation Girl Up National Teen Advisor. As a Teen Advisor, she organized, led and presented at multiple community events regarding youth and education. She also presented and led workshops at the Girl Up Leadership Summit 2014 and had the honor to be the Keynote Speaker for UNA-USA Global Classrooms Miami for 700 plus Miami-Dade students and teachers. She was also a featured speaker for the Miami-Dade College Human Rights Human Trafficking series. Together with the United National Foundation, the South Florida Girl Up has contributed to the lives of 20,000 adolescent girls worldwide by way of their fundraising and advocacy campaigns which among other things secured mandatory birth certificates so that more girls in developing countries could be counted in the census, and avoid human trafficking. “I am proud of what we were able to do for so many girls, including those in South Florida, who benefitted by learning to advocate with their legislators on behalf of girls who didn’t have a voice for themselves.” Hansen said.

FIRE CHIEF’S MESSAGE
Thank You For Your Support BY LANEY STEARNS, PLANTATION FIRE CHIEF
I
n our Democratic society the citizens speak their approval, not through words or banners, but through their votes. As we have seen recently, when the public is not happy with government, they express their opinions in an election. In government it’s often difficult to determine whether our citizens actually approve of the services we provide. We do what we do to ensure our community is safe and our residents can sleep well at night knowing we are on guard for them. I want to thank the residents of Plantation for their overwhelming show of support during the recent election by approving the Public Safety Bond request. As many of you are aware, due to the economic struggles of the past few years, the Fire Department has had to delay making capital improvements and large investments. This translates into a potential risk for our volunteer firefighters and ultimately the City of Plantation as a whole. With guidance from our Mayor and City Council we were able to put together a Bond request that allows us to steadily bring Fire Department services back to the level they need to be. I want to ensure everyone, the investments that we make with your hard earned money are well thought out, detailed, and are put forward only with the intent of returning 100% of the investment back to you, the citizens of Plantation. It is gratifying to know that you continue to put your faith and trust in us to provide the best possible services and programs to the
citizens of Plantation. Your support of the bond allows us to continue that pursuit. As the Fire Chief of the largest volunteer fire department in Florida and some of the most qualified and committed fire rescue folks I know, we pledge to continue to work hard, look for the best opportunities to serve you well, and make you proud to call Plantation home. Sleep well tonight Plantation, we are on guard.
