Amazing New Breakthrough

I

n 1961 President John F. Kennedy delivered a speech before the Canadian Parliament in which he uttered the famous line, “What unites us is greater than what divides us!” With today’s political rhetoric and constant conflict on social media, perhaps those words have never rang truer. No matter what side of the spectrum you fall, we can all take great pride in knowing that together we can overcome anything – just think back to the dark days following 9-11. The New Year is a time for us to take stock in our place in the world and recognize that we truly are in this together. People are more reliant on one another today than at any time in history. The food we eat comes from all over the world. And, while we are globally connected through the internet, your iPhone or laptop was designed in California and assembled in China with a microprocessor fabricated in Korea made from materials mined in Australia and Africa. The magazine you are reading right now was printed in Jacksonville with ink from Japan on paper made from Canadian wood. The words, articles and ads, however, all come from the tireless efforts of our team right here in South Florida! Our ability to live, cooperate and work together, even with those we don’t agree with, has made our lives inarguably better. We think this willingness to focus on common goals is what has made America so successful over the past 200 years. So, as we enter into 2020 and the upcoming Presidential Election, let’s remember President Kennedy’s words, seeking the good in people and looking for the common ground that unites us all as Americans. Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet

A Tradition of Honor BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

hroughout the country, many gather to honor the millions of men and women who have served and are serving in the nation’s armed forces. The City of Plantation did just the same by continuing its long-standing tradition of honoring veterans with a special ceremony on November 11th at Veterans Park.

America by the South Florida Jubilee Choir who were all decked out appropriately in red, white, and blue outfits. The Plantation Fire Department then presented the colors before Retired U.S. Coast Guard Commander Brian Huff of Plantation gave a thoughtful speech on his life in the military and what the “Veterans Day is to honor and observe the sacrifices lifestyle, values, and traditions have made by all veterans, whereas Memorial Day is to meant to him throughout his years. honor the fallen—those who have given their lives for Both Plantation and South Plantation the defense of this country.” High Schools’ Junior ROTC offered demonstrations and American Heritage The morning began with Katherine and Lower School Choir sang a few songs. The City Aleksandra Santacruz of Girl Scout Troop 10360 then recognized all the veterans who were in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by stirring attendance and presented them with roses. renditions of The Star-Spangled Banner and God Bless Councilmember Nick Sortal was asked to do the annual reading of the Significance of Veterans Day. This included the origins and a bit of history about the significant holiday. “Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day, and the date was chosen for its symbolic significance. November 11th was intended to observe the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, which marked the armistice of World War I.”

The events concluded with the Plantation Police Honor Guard doing a three-round volley salute and Brithney Pavilus of Plantation High School playing TAPS. “It’s important we have days like these to remember how we got where we are in this world,” added Sortal. “We have many, many things to be grateful for.” Sortal also encouraged veterans to become involved in Honor Flight, a program that sends veterans to Washington, D.C., for a day. COMMUNITY NEWS

Sunrise Joins the Ranks of the Nation’s Most Wildlife-Friendly Cities BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he City of Sunrise was thankful for many things last year, but right before Thanksgiving they had one more thing to be thankful for. Prior to November’s signature holiday, the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) officially designated the City of Sunrise a NWF Community Wildlife Habitat. The City celebrated their prestigious recognition for becoming the 128th community in the country at their Cultural Festival at the Sunrise Civic Center during that same month. “NWF commends the dedicated residents of Sunrise led by the Sunrise Sustainability Advisory Board, and the Sunrise team for their wildlife conservation efforts and for coming together for a common purpose - to create a community where people and wildlife can flourish,” said National Wildlife Federation’s Senior Director of Community Wildlife Patrick Fitzgerald. “At a time when communities are faced with the problems of losing habitat to development, Sunrise stands out as a model for other communities to emulate. The knowledge and inspiration that this project

has generated will lead Sunrise residents and visitors to take better care of their natural world.” Three years ago, the City registered with NWF and has been ceaselessly working to certify more than 200 wildlife habitats throughout the community. The Connectivity Grant through the Community Foundation of Broward, along with NWF and NatureScape Broward accelerated efforts that enabled Sunrise to host multiple community workshops, plant giveaways, and school garden projects in advancement of earning the certification. Many residents in the community got involved by volunteering to help install gardens and habitats and give out plants. “This achievement showcases that our community embraces living with nature and demonstrates the City’s commitment to implementing the Sunrise Sustainability Action Plan,” commented Sunrise Sustainability Officer Dr. Carrie Kashar. The Community Wildlife Habitat project is part of NWF’s “Garden for Wildlife” program. These projects benefit the entire community of plants, wildlife, and people through the creation of sustain-

able landscapes that require little or no pesticides, fertilizers, and excess watering. These landscapes help keep water and air resources clean. They are healthier for people and the environment and are less resource-dependent than conventional landscapes. Habitat landscapes can serve to beautify our urban areas and give residents pride in their neighborhoods. “This is a wonderful accomplishment led by Dr. Kashar, City staff across all departments, and Sustainability Advisory Board volunteers. This designation is both an honor, joining other committed communities across the nation, and the result of over a years’ work supporting the creation of invaluable wildlife habitat,” added N. Skye McCloud, Chair of the Sunrise Sustainability Advisory Board. To learn more about the City’s sustainability initiatives visit www.sunrisefl.gov/green, NWF.org/Community and get more updates from the National Wildlife Federation at NWF.org/News.

Climb Aboard the New G

etting to and from Miami is about to get easier and faster thanks to the new 75 Express Bus. It provides direct service from the park and ride lots at the BB&T Center in Sunrise and Miami Gardens Drive (@ I-75) to the Miami Airport Station, where you can transfer to local rail or bus to destinations throughout MiamiDade County. The new premium bus service begins on January 13th and for the first five days, all riders ride free.

The 75 Express Bus is funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and operated by Broward County Transit. It builds upon the success of the 95 Express Bus and 595 Express Bus services, which continually receive rave reviews. Riders who use those bus services rate them satisfactory or above satisfactory. “Express buses have proven to be very successful in South Florida which says a lot about the type of service they provide because typically we are looked at as a location where people love their cars,” states South Florida Commuter Services Director Jeremy Mullings. Fast, Comfortable, Convenient The Express Buses are used primarily by riders who own their own cars, but welcome the convenience, comfort and cost savings of commuting in the coach-style buses. One-way fares on the 75 Express Bus are available for as little as $1.30 and monthly passes cost less than $100. The 75 Express Bus will offer free Wi-Fi, air-conditioned comfort, comfortable seating and will travel in the express lanes for faster more reliable travel times. Service will be provided every 30 minutes during the peak morning and afternoon commute times. Commuters can take comfort in knowing that life’s little emergencies are not an issue

thanks to FDOT’s Guaranteed Ride Home program. This government-funded program will cover the cost of Lyft or taxi rides home if the Express Bus is unavailable and you need to leave work early for an emergency or have to stay late for unscheduled overtime. A Better Way to Commute This new, premium transit service is designed to get commuters from western Broward County to their places of employment in Miami-Dade

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS

Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient. During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” For more information about Dr. Donoway and the Pancreatic-IRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com

ASK THE EXPERT

Avoid Injuries From Your New Year’s Resolution BY DR. JOHN GOODNER

H

appy New Year! If you’re like many people, you might have resolved to exercise more in 2020. Starting a new exercise routine can result in foot and ankle injuries if you’re not careful. Here are answers to commonly asked questions by new exercise enthusiasts: Why does the bottom of

my heel hurt? Plantar fasciitis is a very common overuse injury. Dramatic increase in activity over a short period of time, coupled with poor supporting footwear, can ignite an episode of sudden heel pain. Treatment includes but is not limited to: offloading, stretching, orthotics, cortisone injection, platelet rich plasma, shockwave therapy, and end stage surgery if conservative care fails. Why do my legs hurt? Shin splints can either occur in the front outside or back inside portion of the leg. They also tend to occur when the patient has flatfeet and tight calves. Shin splints is a very common overuse injury. Treatment includes but is not limited to: offloading, stretching, orthotics, compression sleeves, and physical therapy.

Why does the back of my heel hurt? Achilles tendonitis is likely to occur after repetitive ankle motion type exercise and activity. Excessive jump rope, plyometrics, stair climbing, and distance running on hills can create inflammation to the Achilles tendon. Treatment includes but is not limited to: offloading, stretching, orthotics, heel lifts, and physical therapy. Why does the inside of my foot hurt? Posterior tibial tendonitis occurs mainly in the flatfooted patient, to which the main tendon that holds up the arch becomes inflamed due to the increase in workload without proper arch support. Treatment includes but is not limited to: offloading, orthotics, and physical therapy. Why does the outside of my ankle hurt? Peroneal tendonitis occurs after distance running on uneven surfaces. These tendons serve as ankle stabilizers so cross training on several different terrains can cause inflammation. Treatment includes but is not limited to: offloading, orthotics, ankle brace, and physical therapy. n Dr. John Goodner is a Board Qualified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in sports medicine foot and ankle injuries, foot and ankle arthroscopy, lower extremity trauma, and lower extremity deformities in infants, children, teens and adults. LEGALLY SPEAKING

What is a Revocable Living Trust? BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE ong gone are the days when trusts were only for the rich and famous. Why? Because creating a revocable living trust is less about estate tax and more about avoiding unnecessary costs of probate and asset transfer, and creating protections for your loved ones. A properly drafted and funded trust can also deliver an inheritance with a valuable creditor and predator protection. The following scenarios may help understand the benefits of a trust and why including one in your estate plan is worth considering: Meet our hypothetical family, George and Jenny, happily married for 25 years with three children, Jessica, age 20, Josh, age 15, and Jonathan, age 12. Both George and Jenny have created wills, leaving everything to each other. After they are both gone, their wills leave it all to their children. Sounds like a logical estate plan? Maybe not. Tragically, George dies suddenly and, according to his will, all of his property transfers to Jenny. The following year, while rushing to an appointment on a rainy morning, Jenny loses control of her car and rear-ends a bus full of trial lawyers heading to the annual “I’ll See You in Court!” Convention in Fort Lauderdale. Several attorneys are injured and predictably lawsuits follow. Now, what happens to Jenny’s inheritance from George? It’s likely all gone to creditors. What is left to raise her children? Perhaps nothing. If George and Jenny had used a trust in their estate plan, the final outcome may have been different. While Jenny’s property would still be subject to creditor claims, her inheritance from George inside a trust would be safe for her and their children. In another sad scenario, imagine Jenny dies first. George later remarries Susan, a woman with four adult children from several marriages. What happens when George passes? His property, including what he inherited from Jenny, may go to Susan and eventually to Susan’s family. George and Jenny’s children could be completely disinherited! With a properly drawn trust, George and Jenny can rest assured that even if the surviving spouse remarries, their money will go to their children. Finally, think of George and Jenny happily enjoying retirement but unfortunately not too fond of their daughter’s husband, Robert. Jenny fears that their son-in-law will never earn a decent living, and may be dependent on their daughter to support him for the rest of his life. George worries that if they leave an inheritance to their daughter and she ultimately divorces Robert, a substantial portion of her inheritance could be lost to her “no-good husband.” If assets are left to their children in a trust, it will not be commingled with marital property. Therefore, in the event of a divorce, an heir’s inheritance will not be the subject of division and distribution. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Happy New Year! BY MAYOR LYNN STONER t’s hard to believe that we’re already looking to not only a new year but a new decade. This time of year, many – if not most – people make resolutions to help improve their lives, their health, and their relationships. The resolutions they make are often along the lines of, to lose weight, exercise more, eat healthier – typically based on some sort of self-improvement. It’s important to continually try and improve the quality of your life. But this year, I’d like to suggest that you look outward when deciding upon your resolutions. Decide to make an impact, to effect change in the world around you. If you have the time, you may want to resolve to volunteer at your child’s school, at a local retirement community, at the local hospital, or at a food pantry. There are hundreds of places to choose from. And the gift of your time is the most precious thing you can give. If you don’t have the time to volunteer, you can also help by resolving to give more to your favorite charity. Organizations use your funds to cure diseases, feed children and the elderly, provide shelter for the homeless, support veterans’ causes, build neighborhoods, care for animals – the list goes on and on. Decide what’s important to you (you can’t do everything!), and if you want to support a local charity or one that helps globally, then find a non-profit organization that supports your values and priorities. You may resolve to be more patient and kinder to people when you’re out and about. Whether they are at the grocery store, a retail store, in their cars, or even at a social event, so many people seem to be in a hurry these days, and this sometimes causes them to be curt, or even rude when encountering others. A smile goes a long way to improving someone’s day and will almost always be “paid forward.”

Local Teens Take the Stage at the Broward Center for The Performing Arts BY BEVERLY PERKINS

E

ach year select students are chosen to be Teen Ambassadors at the Broward Center for The Performing Arts. During the 20192020 season 26 high school students representing 21 public, private or home schools in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties come together to enhance their knowledge of the arts by attending performances and workshops presented at the Broward Center and their affiliated venues. Included in this prestigious bunch of students are American Heritage’s Jessi Kaplan and Adelina Marinello. Now in its 10th year, the Teen Ambassadors program continues to foster the next generation of performing arts fans. The goal of the program is to give these students a platform to expose other teens to the world of the performing arts through their perspective with hopes of getting them more involved.
