This Valentine’s Day, Show Someone You Love Them

E

ach year, on February 14th, millions of people around the world demonstrate their love for someone special by giving Valentine’s Day gifts. While chocolate, flowers or jewelry remain the most popular presents, there are many more interesting options available. People who appreciate sentiment more than financial value may give a hand-written coupon book to their love, complete with “free massage” or “I do the dishes” coupons, to be redeemed by their mate at a future date. Others may give a gift in support of their partner’s passion -- a new 3-wood for a golfer or a set of paint brushes for an artist. Other options include heart-shaped pizzas or twohanded mittens, meant for lovers to keep warm while holding hands (probably not the most practical present here in South Florida). Personally, we prefer the simple Sweetheart candies with “be mine” stamped on the side. No matter what you give, if you give from your heart, your Valentine is sure to be happy. Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day!

ore than 700 volunteers came out to participate in United Way of Broward County’s 25th Annual Day of Caring on Tuesday, December 6th. Volunteers gathered in teams at the BB&T Center in Sunrise to help prepare 300,000 meals for Broward County residents who are in need of food due to financial hardships or other circumstances. very quickly, making snow balls, and snow angels. To full-fill a true winter experience, kids enjoyed hot chocolate and marshmallows. Before playing in the snow, children had the opportunity to pick from a table of generously donated gifts. The Talenfelds always look forward to the holiday season and all the joy it brings. They recognize that not everyone is fortunate enough to experience true holiday cheer and many don’t even have basic necessities like food, shelter and clothing. “As a child, Chanukah was my favorite holiday. My family always had a huge party with all of our relatives and friends and today my husband Howard and I continue this tradition in our home for our family to enjoy,” said Julie Talenfeld. “We are thrilled to be able to bring this wonderful tradition to JAFCO.”

Heart Smart Lifestyle Changes: Reduce Heart Disease Risks As the number one killer in the United States, heart disease continues to pose a significant risk for all Americans. But, what if you discovered that initiating simple David Lopez, MD lifestyle changes could make a world of difference in preventing the disease? Well, it’s a fact. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), making healthier lifestyle choices can substantially reduce your risk of heart disease. “Small lifestyle changes may have big impact on reducing the risk of heart disease, and aid in prevention overall,” says Cleveland Clinic Florida cardiologist David Lopez, MD. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Anyone can make healthy lifestyle changes. Simply making smarter choices in diet and exercise is a great start. For example, in general, everyone should get 30 minutes of moderate activity each day. Dr. Lopez shares that being sedentary, or not moving, increases the risk for many chronic health illnesses, including heart disease.

Since regular, moderate physical activity promotes a healthy vascular system, remaining active can be considered a huge step in the right direction towards prevention. “The key is to start slowly and to build up endurance, increasing to 30 minutes of exercise three to five times weekly,” recommends Dr. Lopez. Overall, healthy lifestyle changes that have a positive impact on reducing the risk of heart disease include:

What can you do to improve your heart health? Know the risk factors, and be sure to talk to your doctor about the ones that apply to you. Dr. Lopez adds, “It’s never too late to evaluate your lifestyle choices, and make positive changes. Every healthy change you make can increase your quality of life, and help you live longer.”

Plantation Law Firm Conducts Holiday Food Drive to Benefit The Pantry of Broward BY JILL SHARPE

K

elley Kronenberg, a diverse full-service business law firm, recently completed food drives and clothing donations around the state including their office in Plantation as part of the firm’s ongoing Kelley Kronenberg Cares (KKC) program. KKC was created to provide opportunities for the firm’s attorneys and staff to personally commit to civic and charitable efforts in the cities where the firm’s offices are located. Marketing and Business Development Manager Shanon Lazarus and Marketing and Business Development Coordinator Brooke Elmore spearheaded the KKC food drive in the Plantation office. As part of the drive, employees in several of the firm’s offices were allowed to wear jeans in exchange for donations (cash or food). The cash donations were used to purchase groceries for the food drives. “Our firm has always believed in helping our neighbors and giving back to the communities where our employees work and live,” said Heath S. Eskalyo, Principal Partner and the Chief Financial Officer for the firm. “These drives are just one way we can get involved on a personal level and help those less fortunate during this holiday season.” The firm’s previous KKC projects have included a statewide school supplies drive for students as well as a Thanksgiving food drive in 2015, in addition to the firm’s regular philanthropic work. Earlier this year, the firm completed its third KKC project, nicknamed “Operation Cookie.” Throughout January and February,

members of Kelley Kronenberg’s Florida offices competed in an interoffice competition to purchase and collect Girl Scout Cookies for troops overseas. Together, the firm’s office members collected more than 300 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies for donation. Through a partnership with the Girl Scouts of South Florida, the collected cookies were sent to troops overseas on March 8, 2016.

help children, adults and veterans live more independently creating new opportunities and new possibilities. In some cases, the gift of a Canine Companion can even save a life. Nobody knows that better than Cristina Saint-Blancard, Dogfest Walk’ n Roll Fort Lauderdale Event Chair. SaintBlancard received her Hearing Dog Tatiana from Canine Companions five years ago and her life has never been the same since. In fact, Tatiana literally saved Saint Blancard’s life when she suffered a cardiac arrest and Tatiana alerted Cristina’s parents who were able to call 911 immediately. “Tatiana has given me comfort and hope during some of the most difficult times in my life, through many health challenges and by assisting me in so many ways as I earned my masters degree in biomedical engineering,” said Saint-Blancard. “I want everyone to know that heroes like Tatiana are not born they are made,” she said. “If it weren’t for Tatiana I would not be here and that’s a fact. That’s why I feel like it is so important to pay it forward and do everything I can to help raise money for Canine Companions.” Dogs are provided to those in need free of charge but it costs $50,000 to breed, raise, train and provide ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Without the support of donors, stories like Cristina’s would not be possible. Canine Companions for Independence is the largest non-profit organization in the world that provides assistance dogs for people with physical disabilities. Local Mystery Author Bases Latest Novel on Florida History COMMUNITY NEWS

BY JILL SHARPE

N

ancy J. Cohen, Plantation resident and author, recently announced the upcoming release of Facials Can Be Fatal, the 13th book in her Bad Hair Day mystery series featuring South Florida hairstylist and salon owner Marla Vail. In this latest mystery, Hairstylist Marla Vail’s new day spa hits a snag when a client dies during a facial. During the frenzy of the December holidays, the last thing salon owner Marla Vail needs is a dead body slathered in a green facial mask at her new day spa. The victim, Valerie Weston, was a major donor for Friends of Old Florida, a historic building preservation society. Marla’s stylists are scheduled to work backstage at their upcoming gala fashion show, but Val’s demise might put a crimp in their plans. Hoping to salvage her reputation, Marla determines to track down the suspects. As she learns more about Val, she realizes the benefactress might have stumbled onto secrets others would kill to

keep. She’d better prepare for a body count that has nothing to do with hot stone massages and everything to do with murder. The story includes excerpts from a travel journal written by Nancy’s father, Harry I. Heller. In Florida Escape, Heller describes his adventures in 1935 while seeking an idyllic paradise in southeast Florida. This book also includes scenes in Key West and mentions of Florida history regarding shipwrecks and pirates. “I give “Facials Can Be Fatal” 5 Stars,” said Susan Sewel for Readers’ Favorite.”It is a nice, comfy, cozy mystery. Although this is one book in a series, it is a great stand-alone. I recommend it to those who are cozy mystery fans and enjoy a sleuth mystery with many twists and turns.” Facials Can Be Fatal by Five Star Published will be available February 22, 2017, in print and digital editions. Early Warning SignS of HEart attack

GIFT CERTIFICATES AVAILABLE

here are many different kinds of warning signs posted along streets, roads and highways. No passing zone, railroad crossing, merging traffic, divided highway, school zone, animal crossing, construction ahead, curves and corners, narrow bridge – the list goes on. Similar to these recognizable yellow and black traffic signs are warning signs for heart attacks. Becoming familiar with them could save your life, just like paying attention to warning signs when you are driving. A heart attack occurs when there is a blockage in the flow of blood in an artery that leads to the heart. Part of the heart muscle is then damaged or destroyed because it does not receive enough oxygen. More than 700,000 Americans have a heart attack, also known as a myocardial infarction, every year. The key to surviving a heart attack is knowing the warning signs so you can get emergency medical treatment. If you think you are having a heart attack, call 9-1-1 immediately for an ambulance to take you to the hospital. Do not try to drive yourself. Some of the early warning signs of a heart attack include:

• Chest pain or discomfort that lasts longer than a few minutes or goes away and then comes back. This pain may be severe and feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing or fullness that is not relieved by changing positions or resting.

Foot Refleexology Grand Opening Special

• Pain that extends to other areas of the body, such as the shoulder, arm, back, neck, jaw or stomach.

60 minutes $35 Reg. 39

• Shortness of breath as well as lightheadedness, sweating, fatigue, fainting, nausea or vomiting. It is important to remember that not all people who have heart attacks experience the same symptoms or to the same degree. The warning signs of a heart attack for women may be slightly different than those for men. While both commonly experience chest pain or discomfort, women may be more likely to have shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting, and back or jaw pain.

Warning signs of a heart attack can appear at any time, at rest or in motion, and at work or play. A heart attack may strike suddenly, but most people have warning signs and symptoms hours, days or weeks beforehand. One of the earliest warning signs of an impending heart attack is chest pain, or angina, that occurs repeatedly because of exertion and is then eased by rest. Early intervention for a heart attack is imperative to reduce damage to heart muscle. Clot-busting drugs can be administered and special procedures can be done to open up blood vessels. However, treatment works best when administered within an hour of the first symptoms of a heart attack. Survival will ultimately depend on how rapidly you receive treatment, how much damage there is to the heart, and the location of the damage. For more information about early warning signs of heart attack, talk with your doctor.

Students Honor World War II Veterans on 75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor SCHOOL NEWS

BY JILL SHARPE

O

n December 7, 2016, the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, the Broward County Association of Student Councils (BCASC) in partnership with Honor Flight South Florida and Broward County Public Schools JROTC, hosted its second Virtual Honor Flight event for 70 veterans and

survivors of World War II at South Plantation High School. The students created the flightless Honor Flight project to honor veterans who because of medical or health risks were unable to participate in the Spring Honor Flight mission to Washington, D.C. to visit the World War II memorial. Jack Pockriss, a 99-year-old resident of Plantation, was one of those veterans who attended and was treated like the hero that he is. Pockriss, who came to the event with his son, daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren was very touched by the tribute and said it was simply “wonderful”. His daughter, Susan Rose, said her father who served in the Army Air Corps during the war, was touched by the number of people who showed up to greet him and the other veterans. “He especially enjoyed all the letters he received as part of the event’s mock military Mail Call,” Rose said. “Dad received more than 30 pieces of mail from family members, friends, people from different community organizations and from school children. Those letters, thanking him for his service, meant so much to him,” she said. The veterans and their families were also treated to dinner, a modified USO show, military medley and 1940s Big Band Sound by the South Plantation High School Band, a presenta-

tion by the Fort Lauderdale Police Pipe and Drum Band, Virtual Honor Flight video, and an Operation Homecoming experience. Some in the crowd were moved to tears. “It was a day none of us will forget,” said Rose. Over the past three years, the BCASC and students have raised over $115,000 to send World War II veterans to the nation’s capital to visit their memorials. Students are currently raising funds toward this year’s $50,000 goal to send veterans on two Spring Honor Flights.

Loving Care For Your Heart ASK THE EXPERT

BY THOMAS DIVERNARDO, SUNRISE FIRE CHIEF

I

t’s February and the time of year devoted to matters of the heart. Valentine’s Day and all of its amorous trappings instantly spring to mind, but did you know that February is also designated for raising awareness about heart disease as American Heart Month? This is important because heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. The good news is that heart disease can be prevented with healthy habits that help to manage body weight, cholesterol, and blood pressure. So, amidst the customary celebration of all-thingsromantic this month, be sure to extend some of the love to your own, literal heart:

Eat better. ▸▸ Avoid processed foods high sugar, sodium, and hydrogenated-fat. ▸▸ Drink alcohol only in moderation: 2 drinks/day for men; 1 for women. Move. ▸▸ Incorporate moderate activity for 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week or more. No Smoking. ▸▸ Find resources to help you quit at www.smokefree.gov. ▸▸ Avoid second-hand smoke. Regular check-ups. ▸▸ Check your blood pressure, cholesterol numbers, blood sugar level, and body mass index (BMI).

28

FEBRUARY 2017 | OUR CITY PLANTATION

▸▸ Discuss your results with your doctor. You can even do something this month to show someone else’s heart some major love: Learn CPR. ▸▸ Call 954-746-3465 for information on upcoming CPR training opportunities in Sunrise. ▸▸ Get the free PulsePoint phone app, which notifies users if CPR may be needed in a nearby public place. Four out of five cardiac arrests happen outside of a hospital setting. Effective bystander CPR provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest has been shown to double, and even triple, a victim’s chance of survival. Take these steps to heart, and you’ll show Cupid what it really means to spread the love. For more information and safety tips, visit the City of Sunrise website at www.sunrisefl.gov, ‘Like’ us on Facebook at SunriseFire-Rescue and follow us on Twitter at Twitter@SunriseFRD.

f you want to have a baby, it is important to prepare for pregnancy, not simply stop birth control. The way each woman prepares will be different – some may need to change medications, others may need to stop smoking, while others may need to significantly increase their intake of folic acid. Even if a woman is considered healthy, she should still schedule a consultation with her gynecologist to help ensure she and her baby will be as healthy as possible. Preparing for pregnancy can take a few months or longer, so it is important to consult with your gynecologist prior to going off birth control. At your consultation, your gynecologist will ask questions about your family health history and any medical conditions you or a family member may have had that could affect a pregnancy, as well as a series of questions related to your gynecologic health. If you currently have any medical issues, such as a sexually transmitted disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or a thyroid disorder, these must be treated before you become pregnant. Your gynecologist will review your medications with you. Since some can cause birth defects, it’s important to discuss everything you may take, including vitamins, overthe-counter medications and herbs. Your gynecologist will also review your vaccination history to determine if you need any shots prior to conception. Folic acid can prevent birth defects of the brain and spine. However, it is important that you begin taking it during and before pregnancy. Your gynecologist will discuss how much you should take and when. Your gynecologist will ask you questions about your lifestyle, such as those related to smoking, using drugs or drinking alcohol. Changing any negative lifestyle behaviors before becoming pregnant can often mean the difference between having a child who is born healthy and one who is not. If you are overweight/obese or underweight, you are at a higher risk for health issues and complications during pregnancy. Your gynecologist can recommend changes that can help you reach a healthy weight before becoming pregnant. When you are trying to become pregnant, it is important to think about the environment where you live and work, too. Make sure you avoiding any toxins such as chemicals, sprays and fertilizers, as well as animal feces. These substances can damage your reproductive systems and make it more difficult to become pregnant. Your gynecologist will also ask questions about your emotional health, such as if you have ever felt depressed or anxious, as well as whether you have experienced physical or emotional abuse. Growing your family is an important decision, so be sure to meet early with your gynecologist to make this as joyous an experience as possible.
