How a Trip to Nazi Germany Gave Us a King
I
n August 1934, a 39-year-old Southern Baptist preacher named Michael traveled to Berlin, Germany, for the Fifth World Baptist Alliance Meeting. The meeting is a global gathering of Baptists held every five years. It is organized by the Baptist World Alliance (BWA), a worldwide fellowship of Baptist churches and organizations. The 1934 event was particularly notable because it was held in Berlin shortly after the Nazi Party rose to power. While at the meeting, Michael saw how Nazi ideology combined elements of nationalism, racism, anti-Semitism, and anti-communism impacted Germans. He saw parallels to the segregation policies in his home state of Georgia. He realized that the oppression of minority groups was a global problem. Michael also learned about the teachings of Martin Luther, the 16th-century leader of the Protestant Reformation. Luther’s teachings emphasized salvation by faith alone, the authority of the Bible over Church traditions, and the priesthood of all believers. In 1517, Luther famously nailed his “95 Theses” to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg. The theses called out corrupt practices of the Catholic Church at the time and led to the formation of new Christian denominations collectively known as Protestantism. Luther’s teachings left such an indelible mark on Michael that shortly after he returned home to the United States, he chose to change his name to Martin. Interestingly, he also changed the name of his five-year-old son to Martin. That five-year-old son, Martin Luther King Jr., would grow up to have as significant an impact on the world as his namesake. What a difference a name makes!

Long Time Coming:
New waterfall at Jacaranda
T
o kick off the New Year 2024, the Jacaranda Master Association has completed landscaping and up-lighting for the entrance at the main waterfall feature. The new display is located at the corner of Central Park Place and Broward Boulevard, a spot traveled by those in 14 sub-communities of Jacaranda. Mayor Nick Sortal on Jan. 11 celebrated the event with residents and the board via a ribbon-cutting. Back in the 1980s, the main waterfall feature was the most beautiful part of the city of Plantation, residents say. President John H Cleary of Gulfstream Land Development, who purchased 5,400 acres back in 1964, was attempting to mirror the elegance of Coral Gables and people even had their wedding ceremonies on the triangular island. Board members say the area was not well-maintained, and about five years ago began reviving the landmark. They were among about 50 people at the ribbon-cutting on Jan. 11th. “The entrance into Jacaranda had to make a statement one more time!” board member Linda Marcus said. “Endless hours were dedicated because this was so very important to many homeowners within Jacaranda. Now everyone who drives by may smile.” The Jacaranda Master board consists of Frank Bahman, President; Linda Marcus, Treasurer; Janellen Smith, Secretary; and directors Cynthia O’Donnell, Thomas Lawrence, Tom Walsh, Maureen O’Brien, Alex Gonzalez, Shirley Alvarez, Jeff LaFrance, Julie Bennett, Frances Collado-Rifkin, Charles Rodriguez and Judy Meair. The Jacaranda Master sub-communities are: Sunset Cove, Arbor Court, Chelsea I, Chelsea II, Chelsea III, Quatraine 1, Quatraine 2, Quatraine 5, Chatham Towne, Central Park Place Shopping Center, The Laurels, Plantation Palms, Waterford Courtyard and Ventana, which totals to 2,155 units. 16 / Our City Plantation / February 2024

ESTATE PLANNING LESSONS
WE LEARNED FROM U.S. PRESIDENTS
F
By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.
ebruary 19, 2024, is President’s Day. This is a great time to learn some lessons from our forefathers’ estate planning experiences.
George Washington: Lessons for a Blended Family
Washington, a highly respected figure, took notable care in organizing his affairs and planning for the future. At age twenty-six, Washington married Martha, a widow who had two children of her own. After his stepson John died, Martha and George raised his two youngest children as their own. Washington's blended family prompted him to draft a will that meticulously provided for each family member, ensuring their well-being after his passing. This highlights how by spending sufficient time and effort to think about and memorialize how we want to leave our possessions; we can leave a real legacy without a stressful mess.
Life is constantly changing–
Have you updated your Estate Plans? Estate Planning • Trust Planning • Wills Living Wills • Heathcare Directives Power of Attorney • Elder Law • Probate Asset Protection • Pet Trusts
Thomas Jefferson: Lessons for Business Owners
Jefferson, despite his great capabilities, had significant financial difficulties. His case demonstrates the challenges faced by families with cash-poor estates. His wealth was tied up and his family didn’t have the cash to settle the debts. Many families today face similar problems. Often when a business owner has significant wealth tied up in their business but little cash in reserve to settle debts, funds aren’t readily available to surviving family members. This can cause the families left behind to feel intense pressure to sell too quickly or at a large discount to pay creditors. Life insurance can be used to provide sufficient cash to resolve this issue. With the proper amount of life insurance, and by using estate planning tools such as irrevocable life insurance trusts, an individual can prevent a “land rich, cash poor” situation like that experienced by Jefferson’s family.
Abraham Lincoln: No Will
Lincoln, a lawyer, surprisingly died without a will or any other type of estate planning in place. His murder plunged his family into a nightmare as they attempted to settle his affairs without knowing where to start. This is called an “intestate estate” and the funds are divided according to state law, not necessarily what he would have wanted, during a prolonged court procedure called “probate” A key lesson is that no one knows when they will pass away. Even Abraham Lincoln was caught unprepared. Had Lincoln put some basic planning in place prior to his death, it could have eased his family’s burden.

PLANTATION UPDATE
L
By Nick Sortal
ast year, my administration coordinated the first strategic planning retreat with the City Council and Department Directors. The result is Plantation’s 2023-2028 Strategic Plan that outlines our collaborative vision and priorities for the city for years to come. You can view the plan at plantation.org/government/ administration/mission-statement. Strategy is not a one-and-done kind of thing. While our departments are already hard at work on the items listed in the plan, my thinking is that we are continuously studying how we can make the city better for our residents. New things come up, new concerns emerge and we have to be flexible. So on Feb. 12, we will be meeting with the City Council and department heads again to discuss our strategic priorities and whether any updates are needed to the plan. We will talk about what we should prioritize for funding and how we will measure if we’re moving in the right direction.
My priorities are:
Move our master plans and study recommendations forward so we can meet resident expectations for City services; Support development that’s right for Plantation (bring good businesses and affordable housing, while preserving the quality of existing single-family neighborhoods); Build on the progress we’ve made with expanding our communication with the community.
Plate readers
We are planning to expand our use of license plate readers, which made their debut about a year ago throughout the Gateway District. The license plate readers detect stolen vehicles and wanted criminals and send real-time alerts to police officers in the area. (Surprisingly, once a car is stolen the thieves often drive it en route to committing more crimes.) The police have a methodology for placing the plate readers. Our next plans are for the Midtown District, then the rest of the city.
Making progress
Meanwhile, I again want to remind you that my administration has greatly increased the amount of information flowing from City Hall. I gather up those members of our departments who share our information on social media twice a month to share items of note, and sometimes it’s as minute as what the park hours are on holidays. I myself contribute a newsletter twice a month that can be emailed directly to your inbox. Go to Plantation.org and see a sample newsletter. The sign up link is at the bottom.
▸
I prefer email if you wish to contact me directly, That way, I can share it with the department heads involved. My email address is Mayor@Plantation.org.

■ ANIMAL HEALTH
MAKE YOUR PET’S DENTAL HEALTH A PRIORITY THIS YEAR AND BEYOND By Dr. Jennifer Frione
Impact of Poor Pet Dental Health
F
ebruary is National Pet Dental Health Month! This month is dedicated to educating pet owners on the importance of dental care for their furry companions. Just as a dentist stresses the importance of brushing our teeth daily, it is equally as important for our pets to maintain good oral health. A wide range of factors affect an animal’s dental health such as diet, age and breed. Proper dental care plays an essential role in our pet’s overall health and taking the necessary steps to prevent additional health issues is crucial.
Dental disease is one of the most common health problems affecting dogs and cats. Common dental issues faced by dogs include periodontal disease, gingivitis, tooth fractures and dental abscesses. If left untreated, it can lead to serious health concerns such as infection, inflammation and tooth loss. Additional diseases such as heart, kidney, liver and bacterial infections can occur if bacteria from the build-up plaque enters the bloodstream. It is important for pet owners to be aware of the warning signs associated with poor dental health and prevent serious consequences.
Early Signs of Dental Diseases in Pets
• Bad breath • Pain in mouth • Fractured or broken tooth • Bleeding gums • Facial swelling • Tartar and plaque buildup
• Discolored teeth • Difficulty chewing • Abscesses • Weight loss To mitigate the risk of your pet developing dental disease, pet owners should take action to create a routine for their furry companions to promote dental health.
Here are some helpful tips to include in your pet’s dental routine:
• Active home dental care: Brushing their teeth daily to remove build-up of plaque and tartar is a key component to preventing oral issues and tackling early signs of dental disease. • Dental treats: Treats such as dental chews and toy bones can help clean their teeth, massage their gums and reduce plaque and tartar build-up. Although, these are not a substitute for brushing your pet’s teeth. • Professional cleanings: Teeth cleanings performed by your veterinarian can remove bacteria from below the gum-line and prevent cavities and plaque build-up that cannot be reached from a home cleaning. • Schedule routine check-ups: Bringing your pet to their veterinarian for their annual check-up can detect potential health issues before they escalate. • Chew toys: Chewing is an important behavior for your pets because it cleans tartar off their teeth and helps produce well-formed jaw muscles. • Healthy diet: Feeding your pet a nutritional, well-balanced diet influences the overall well-being of your pet. Dental care for pets can be easily overlooked if not prioritized by pet owners. Prioritizing good dental health for our pets contributes to their overall well-being and happiness. By implementing regular dental care routines, your pet is guaranteed to wear a healthy smile.

Tradition Meets Innovation
I
THE EVOLUTION OF MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING!
n the heart of Plantation, John Wai Martial Arts Academy stands as a beacon of innovation in martial arts training. Since its inception in 1997, the academy, under the guidance of John Wai, has revolutionized the way martial arts are taught. What makes John Wai's approach unique is his ability to apply the values of traditional Kung Fu with the practical effectiveness of modern combative arts like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and MMA.
A central aspect of the academy's philosophy is the importance of preserving martial arts traditions. These traditions are not just about techniques, but also about instilling discipline, respect, and a sense of community – values that are deeply embedded in the family-like environment of his academy. However, he also recognizes the necessity to adapt and evolve. This philosophy has led to significant improvements in training methods, ensuring that what is taught is not only culturally rich but also practically effective in today’s world. A fundamental principle of the training approach is the focus on realistic self-defense. The Coaching team understands that the true value of martial arts lies in its applicability in real-life situations. This is not about learning choreographed moves but about mastering techniques that work under pressure. The success of this approach is evident in the performance of the academy's professional fight team, which has produced numerous MMA champions in the fight circuit. Their achievements serve as a testament to the
efficacy of the training provided by his team. John Wai Martial Arts is more than just an academy; it's a community where traditional values meet modern efficiency. Whether you're a child or an adult, seeking self-defense skills, fitness, or a sense of belonging, John Wai’s academy offers a unique and fulfilling experience.
