CELEBRATES NEW OFFICE IN DAVIE! Same great tutors and superb test prep!
“Thank you to Drew for working with me all summer to help improve my ACT score and thank you to Mike and Adam for teaching me everything I needed to know for the SAT. Knowing junior year was going to be stressful I wanted to get the tests done as early as possible, and thanks to Mike, Adam, and Drew, I could.”
“ Mike made a huge difference in my understanding of the math content on the SAT. He not only helped me with the concepts, but taught me how to approach previously confusing problems. After just a few sessions, my math score went up 90 points.“

“What I like most about BTS was the way I could transition from group learning to private lessons so that I could get a basic understanding of each lesson. I could figure out what I did and didn’t understand and then review it in the private lessons. Taking classes the summer before Junior year and finishing tutoring by December was a huge relief!”
“Tutoring with Broward Tutorial was very helpful in improving my ACT score. I got a 33 on my first practice test, but thanks to Drew at Broward Tutorial, I got a 36 on the actual ACT!”

“We swore we weren’t ready for senior living. Then we saw The Palace.”
Jack & Evelyn Miller
“We were stunned. We stayed in the Four Seasons in Paris once, and The Palace in Weston looked better. Ten minutes after we walked in the door, we realized we had never seen senior living like this. Everything you can think of is at your fingertips. Chef-prepared meals in the dining room. A social director who makes cruise ships look dull. A staff trained to deliver such a high level of care and comfort they’ve been named #1 in America. Everywhere you look, it’s 5-star all the way. But you need good friends to share it with. Our crowd at The Palace are some of the best new friends we’ve ever met, and every single one of us will tell you: ‘We wish we had found The Palace sooner.’ ”
The Palace at Weston is taking reservations. Now is the time to visit our spectacular Weston Leasing Center at 15951 SW 41st St., Suite 500, Davie, FL 33331.

Everybody Counts in Census 2020
T
his month we will all be part of history. The 2020 Census will be the first to be completed online, but there are options to complete by mail or even phone if you prefer. By definition, a census is an official count or survey of a population. Our Constitution calls for an “actual enumeration” to be completed once a decade. The first census was taken in 1790. It included the original 13 States, plus the districts of Kentucky, Maine, and Vermont, and the Southwest Territory (Tennessee). The 1790 enumeration asked for the name of the head of the family and the number of persons in each household of the following descriptions: free white males of 16 years and upward (to assess the country’s industrial and military potential); free white males under 16 years; free white females; all other free persons; and slaves. Census 2020 will ask questions such as the number of people living or staying in a home on April 1, 2020; whether the home is owned with or without a mortgage, rented or occupied without rent; and the name, sex, age, date of birth and race of each person in the home. When filling out your census it is important to include every person living in the household, regardless of age, citizenship or immigration status. Your responses are confidential and protected by federal law. The Census Bureau cannot share responses identifying individuals with the public or other federal agencies, including immigration authorities and law enforcement. The results of Census 2020 will have a direct impact on our communities, so it is critical that everyone is counted. Census results help determine how billions of dollars in federal funding flow into states, counties and cities each year for things such as health care, fire departments, school funding, and even construction of roads and highways. Census data also determines our political future by determining how many seats in Congress each state gets and legislative districts. Please keep an eye on your mailbox this month and be sure to take the steps to complete Census 2020. Your community is counting on you being counted. Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

Piper High School Students Are in A New York State of Mind BY BEVERLY PERKINS

ust last month, representatives from HSBC Bank and Virtual Enterprises International (VEI) made a special announcement to Piper High School teachers, administrators, and students. The Sunrise school was honored as one of four in the nation selected as an “HSBC Bank Opportunity Fund Winner”. Jillian Berg of Virtual Enterprises International made the surprise announcement to the students during the school day. “We are so excited to tell you guys that you are the winners of the HSBC opportunity grant fund! Eight students from Piper High will attend our youth business summit in New York City next month. The students will be able to be a part of the largest student-run trade show with over 5,000 students representing their businesses all over the United States,” exclaimed Berg. The notable award provides all-expenses-paid trips for eight Piper High School students in the school’s Virtual Enterprise program and two chaperones to participate in the national “2020 VEI Youth Business Summit Competition” in New York City. In order to qualify, the school must either be Title I eligible or have 50% or more students eligible for
free or reduced-price lunch. Students also needed to complete: ▸ Participation in the National Online Elevator Pitch Competition, National Online Branding Competition, and National Online Website Competition. ▸ Submission of the written business plan. ▸ Sales made by the firm to individuals or other VE businesses. ▸ Payroll processed in the months of December and January. Once they completed those assignments, they needed to submit a one-minute video pitch about why their team should be selected, a letter of recommendation from VE facilitator or school administrator, and a signed letter from a school administrator authorizing participation and travel. The VEI Youth Business Summit is a one-of-a-kind global business convention for students. During a dynamic week of business competitions, leadership events, and professional networking, the rising talent from middle and high schools around the world dis-
play the professional skills and business insight they have developed by running a VEI company during the school year. The VEI program prepares students for successful futures by transforming school classes into companies and bridging the divide between the classroom and the working world. Students launch and operate businesses in a virtual environment with peers from around the world. “Many students in our class never gone to New York and this is our chance to make it big. It’s a big accomplishment and we are so proud of everyone,” said Piper High student Jodame Mowatt.

“Gong Xi Fa Cai” from Plantation Middle School BY BEVERLY PERKINS

any of us celebrated the beginning of a new decade on January 1st, but the celebration continued on January 25th with the Chinese New Year. Also known as the Spring Festival, the national holiday begins on the first of the Lunar Calendar and lasts until the 15th of the first month. With more than 4,000 years of history, The Chinese New Year is the longest holiday as it concluded on February 8th.
During the 15-day commemoration, special prayers are said, signature foods are eaten, and age-long traditions and activities take place. One such activity took place at Plantation Middle School when the middle school students entertained fellow classmates and visitors from Mirror Lake and Peters Elementary

Schools with a Chinese New Year celebration to bring in the “Year of the Rat”. The Chinese program is a point of pride for Plantation Middle School being that it is an International Baccalaureate (IB) magnet school. The program then continues into the senior version called the International Business Entrepreneurial Language Leadership Academy (IBELLA) at Plantation High School. Plantation Middle School has received federal grants to import teachers from China, who not only teach the language but the culture of the country. The teachers also make weekly visits to Mirror Lake and Peters, two schools that feed into Plantation Middle. Chinese art, sports, and culture poster board displays filled the auditorium for everyone to enjoy prior to the big event. The morning program began with Keidan Mullings-Augustin and Naomie Thelusna serving as masters of ceremonies. This year’s Chinese teacher, Huang Can, was front and center to
provide encouragement and prompting for each performance. Entertainment included traditional music and ceremonial lion, fan, ribbon, and dragon dances. Plantation Middle’s very own Ayesha Haroon performed a solo number and Mirror Lake Elementary students were not shy to take the stage either. They were eager to show off their expertise as they sang about Chinese numbers, while Peters Elementary children shared a poem. “With education budgets being cut, great principals must find creative ways to bring programs to their students, and my principal, Dr. Sherri N. Wilson, is an innovative visionary, motivated to give our students as many opportunities as possible. Our Chinese Language Program is one of them,” said Pamela Van Horn, Plantation Middle School Magnet Coordinator.
Don’t fret about your colonoscopy, new prep is easier to swallow When your doctor says it’s time to schedule a colonoscopy, do you start thinking up excuses to put it off? You may be concerned about unpleasantness and inconvenience as you prepare for the exam. But it’s time to stop worrying – the prep process is much easier these days. Yes, one of the keys to a successful colonoscopy is the “clean-out” beforehand. But improvements – in the liquid you drink, the amount you must drink and the timing – make the whole process easier to swallow. Regular colonoscopies can save your life Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancerrelated deaths among men and the third leading cause among women in the United States. Most patients who develop colon cancer have no obvious risk factors. “The colon, itself, is a risk factor,” says Tolga Erim, DO, Chairman of Gastoenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition in Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Digestive Disease Center.
Tolga Erim, DO
Bowel residue polyps are a precursor for cancer, and they can be overlooked if the colon lining is not clear of solid and liquid. “Many people fear drinking the laxative prep to cleanse the bowel more than the colonoscopy itself,” says Dr. Erim. But it’s a key part of the procedure. Three steps for a good prep: • Cut out fiber. Two days before the exam, start a low-fiber diet.
• Switch to clear liquids. The day before the procedure, consume only clear liquids. “It’s important to keep patients hydrated and flush the prep through the intestinal tract,” advises Dr. Erim. “The clear liquids aid in that process.” • Start the prep. Start the prep. Many physicians today prescribe a split-dose regimen, where half the prep is taken the night before and the other half in the morning. But, if the exam is in the afternoon, the prep is taken the morning of the colonoscopy. A better-tasting solution “The liquid bowel-cleansing agents now taste better and less of the liquid is consumed. This mean that the prep is, quite literally, easier to swallow,” explains Dr. Erim. Those two factors, combined with the split-dose approach, improves the experience for patients. Regular colonoscopies can detect colon cancer early on. It’s important to follow your physician’s screening recommendations. To schedule a colonoscopy today, call 800.639.DOCTOR.

Mirror Lake, How Does Your Garden Grow? BY BEVERLY PERKINS
project could be developed. The robot would be able to weed, water, fertilize garden land, and be operated via solar panels. “We are trying to build a garden to help the disabled. We were inspired because 38% of our students have disabilities and we are always trying to help find ways to help. We also want to feed the homeless. Jayla and her mom always give a sandwich to a homeless man on their way to school every single day,” said 5thgrade team member David Beltran. These determined students also interviewed Plantation City Council President Nick Sortal about his thoughts on their project. “Seeing children trying to help make our city better is as good as it gets,” expressed Sortal. “Talking to them put a big smile on my face.” At the end of the event, Robotics Ultron 1841 collected enough items to fill eight large boxes to give to the dedicated deputy. DeBruyne, who has been at Mirror Lake for the past 16 years, says that Mirror Lake Principal Marlen Veliz plays an essential role in the camaraderie and atmosphere at the school. “Ms. Veliz is such an incredible leader that she makes us feel that we can accomplish anything,” DeBruyne said. “She makes us feel so proud to be part of the Mirror Lake family. It takes great leaders to accomplish such success.”

n early January, the Mirror Lake Elementary Robotics Ultron 1841 hosted its first annual robotics competition. The eight 4th and 5th- graders on the team competed with twenty-three other Broward County elementary schools and won its third straight STEM Research Project title. This year the STEM Project had to be science theme-based that included the community. The ambitious Mirror Lake students decided to create a robot that would grow local vegetables to help feed Plantation’s homeless and help disabled individuals stay healthy. “Robotics teaches the students the essential keys of teamwork,” explained Coach Debra DeBruyne, noting competitions are scored via a VEX IQ game called Squared Away. “They must work together to maximize the number of points they score.” To involve the community, the students decided to reach out to Officer Courtney Fish. The Plantation police officer leads the city’s homeless outreach unit to provide background on the prevalence of the homeless situation in Plantation. The students decided they wanted to help Plantation’s homeless by collecting much-needed items at their robotics competition. The students researched similar robots via the internet and even produced a sketch of how their

Looks WHOO’s Walking and Raising School Funds? BY BEVERLY PERKINS
P
lantation Park Elementary (PPE) PTA held its 1st annual “Owl Walk” in late January and it was “A”mazing! The school-wide fitness fundraiser had students, faculty, and staff lacing up their sneakers to participate in its first-ever event. Other participants were City of Plantation firefighters who also brought along Sparky, the City of Plantation Fire Department’s (PFD) mascot and of
course, School Resource Officer (SRO) Joe Gallignani couldn’t miss it. The event was created to raise funds for school improvements and educational enrichment programs at the premier Plantation school. Students were encouraged to ask family, friends, and neighbors to sponsor them. Local businesses didn’t hesitate to show their support of PPE’s Owl Walk. Many happily sponsored the event and donated refreshments. “We have received so much support from our community and local businesses, we are so thankful for their donations. We are truly grateful for all of our corporate sponsors this year - without them, Owl Walk would not have been possible!” remarked PTA
President at Plantation Park Elementary, Stefanie Smith, when asked about the success of the event. Troy Ramsey, PPE 5th Grade teacher was the surprise guest DJ and emcee of the event. He played great tracks to keep everyone on their feet. His playlist kept both kids and adults dancing as they made their way around the carpool loop for 30 minutes. After walking, the students received prizes, snacks, water, and an “Allstar” dance party with PFD mascot Sparky serving up some ice cream treats. “This year’s Owl Walk was incredible! Our students had so much fun raising money for their school and showing their PPE pride today,” said Jessica Trinidad, PTA VP of Fundraising at Plantation Park Elementary.
The event was a huge success as these determined students raised more than $17,000. Everyone at PPE, students and teachers alike, are already looking forward to next year’s Owl Walk. “We are so excited to have a new fundraising tradition at Plantation Park Elementary that incorporates fitness, community involvement and school spirit,” concluded Brittany Mohler, PTA VP of Membership at PPE. Owl Walk will be an annual fundraising event at Plantation Park Elementary. If you are interested in becoming a business sponsor or individual donor for the event in 2021, please email president@ ppepta.com for more information.

Advanced Treatment Options for Foot and Ankle Conditions BY DR. JOHN GOODNER
I
f you’ve had a foot and ankle injury, that has lasted for several months, and has not gotten better despite rest and physical therapy, then I would encourage you to explore new advanced therapy options such as EPAT® Shockwave therapy, Platelet Rich Plasma injections, or Stem Cell therapy. These advanced treatment options can be used to treat conditions such as plantar fasciitis (heel pain), Achilles tendonitis, shin splints, painful trigger points, joint inflammatory conditions, and tendonitis (tendon injury/inflammation). EPAT® Shockwave Therapy Shockwave therapy, or Extracorporeal pulse activation treatment, delivers pulses of sound waves that cause “microtrauma” or microscopic injury to the soft tissue and bone it is treating. This trauma stimulates inflammation, which is critical to healing. It also helps to stimulate blood flow to the area. Damaged
tissue begins to regenerate and eventually heal. EPAT® has a proven success rate that is equal to or greater than that of traditional treatment methods (including surgery) and without the risks, complications and lengthy recovery time. EPAT® is performed in a physician’s office/clinic, does not require anesthesia, requires a minimal amount of time, patients can bear weight (i.e. walk) immediately, and return to normal activity within a few days of the procedure. Platelet Rich Plasma Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentration of platelets and growth factors created from a small amount of your own blood. Increased levels of growth factors have the potential to improve signaling and recruitment of cells. For many years, blood components derived from the patient and then delivered to the site of injury have created growing interest for use in orthopaedic procedures. New research and technology has expanded the application of this therapy for use in orthopaedic procedures. Stem Cell Therapy Current literature supports the usage of Amniotic derived umbilical cord based injectables for many orthopedic conditions. Stem cell therapy creates an
immediate regenerative healing environment that helps create clinically impactful outcomes without the potential complications associated with repeated steroid injections and other traditional treatment options. This regenerative therapy alternative can potentially help you avoid surgery for your chronic foot, ankle and leg conditions. Dr. John Goodner is a Board Qualified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in sports medicine foot and ankle injuries, foot and ankle arthroscopy, lower extremity trauma, and lower extremity deformities in infants, children, teens and adults. LEGALLY SPEAKING
Providing for Minor Children BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE re you a parent with minor children? If you are, your days are busy and your life is full. Probably the last thing you want to imagine is the possibility that someday you may leave for work in the morning, and not return. Who will take care of your children if something happens to you? Have you ever thought about a will or trust? Perhaps that’s something you’d consider when you’re older. You’re young, healthy, and, of course, you plan to be around for a long time: to see your children finish college, to walk your daughter down the aisle, to grow old with your spouse or partner and to play with your grandchildren. But we are reminded on a daily basis that life doesn’t always go as planned. I am often reminded of one of my favorite John Lennon lyrics, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans,” from his song, “Beautiful Boy.” The song was written for his young son, Sean. And, in the same year, the song was released, tragedy struck. Lennon was shot and killed in front of his New York apartment. Life doesn’t always go as planned. As an estate planning attorney, I frequently see the sad consequences of a family facing an unexpected death, made even more difficult when minor children are involved. Does having an estate plan lessen the pain of an expected loss? Of course not. But it does take some of the burden off surviving family members: difficult decisions have already been made, priorities set, helpers designated.

954.885.0085 An important component of a parent’s estate plan is addressing issues regarding the upbringing of your children. What happens if both parents die simultaneously, or within a short duration of time? A contingency plan should identify the persons you’d like to manage your assets, as well as the guardian you’d nominate to finish raising your children. In many instances, you may purposely designate different persons to deal with your money and your children so as to maintain a system of checks and balances. You don’t want the probate court deciding who will manage your finances or to guess whom you’d prefer to raise your children. Other issues to consider are whether you’d like your heirs to receive an inheritance directly, or whether you’d prefer to have the assets placed in trust. Funds from a trust can be distributed based on a number of factors that you designate such as age, need, and/or even incentives based on behavior and education. All too often, children receive substantial assets before they are mature enough to handle them properly, with devastating results. Most importantly, give careful thought to your choice of guardian, ensuring that he or she shares the values you want to be instilled in your children. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. The weather is perfect for spending time outside with family and friends at one of our 42 beautiful parks and recreation facilities and enjoying all the colors the season has to offer. Throughout the City, you’ll find multi-purpose trails to safely enjoy walking, jogging, inline skating or bike riding. And many of our walking paths, like those in Central Park, Seminole Park, and Veteran’s Park, have health stations along the way to help with strength and flexibility. Set within an 83-acre wetland nature preserve, Volunteer Park in Plantation Acres includes the beautiful Plantation Equestrian Center, which offers free horse shows and exhibitions on weekends. You’ll also find Camp Everglades, one of the most unique playgrounds around. If you’re feeling more active, tennis courts and basketball courts are available, as well as boardwalks and trails for walking, biking, or jogging. Jim Ward Community Center is located within the Park East neighborhood, and the Plantation Community Center is located within the Historic Plantation neighborhood. Both picturesque facilities offer basketball courts, water playgrounds, tot lot, gyms, and a game room, all for free! If tennis is your game, the City has over 50 tennis courts for your enjoyment. PuzzleJunction.com You and your kids can play for free at Seminole Park, Deicke Park, and the community centers at Kennedy Park, Jim Ward, and Volunteer Park. Basketball courts, ball fields, and volleyball courts can also be found in many of the parks. Passive parks are sprinkled throughout Plantation have free entry and are open from dawn to dusk. From the better-known parks, like Rae Carole Armstrong Liberty Tree Park, Hoffman Park and the Multicultural Park, to some of the lesser-known “mini-parks” such as Thrower Park, Plantation Point Park, Woodbury Park, and Tara Park. With 42 options to choose from, one is sure to be one within your neighborhood. While you’re outside, we hope you’ll take time to notice all the beautiful landscaping, mature trees, and thoughtful touches throughout the City that make Plantation someplace special. Plantation prides itself on being an Arbor Day Foundation designated “Tree City USA” for over 35 years. Plantation elected officials and staff dedicate themselves to promoting the greening of our community and celebrate the importance of a strong, healthy tree canopy within our suburban setting. As you drive to work, the grocery, or the gym, I hope you’ll take time to notice the amazing plants, trees, and flowers that can be found within our City, and that they inspire you to see all the beauty Plantation has to offer. You might be surprised at what you find! Reminder: looking ahead! It seems like the New Year just started, and yet Spring Break is just around the corner. Now is the time to start thinking about Spring Break Camp, and the City of Plantation has several options available. Fun-filled programs are held at a variety of our parks. Long-time Plantation residents Marco and Betty Collazos ventured up the east coast to New York City. With so much to see and do, this adventurous couple tackled the town by visiting all the sites including One World Trade Center. The tallest building in the Western Hemisphere (and the seventh tallest in the world) in Lower Manhattan was the greatest backdrop for a photo op with some of Plantation’s greatest literature.

Is it healthy to lose 1 to 2 pounds a day? hCG weight loss studies have shown that the weight lost while following the protocol comes directly from adipose fat tissue rather than lean muscle. In doing so, the weight loss comes directly from fat and does not strip the body of much-needed muscle, vitamins or minerals essential to maintain good health. At the same time, excessive amounts of fat-stored nutrients are released into the bloodstream to be absorbed by the body. How does the Slender Fit U program work? Our program is simple. It causes your body to break down the abnormal stored fat for calories – not the muscle – easily and comfortably providing your body “My experience with Slender Fit U was amazing! lism slows down and begins not to function normally. Over time these calories become stored as abnormal fat, which is “locked” in by the hypothalamus gland, the part of the brain that controls your metabolism and fat storage. Locked away, this stored, abnormal fat is unusable to the body no matter how much diet and exercise you do. Don’t people put weight back on? Our program gives clients long-lasting and potentially permanent results. Amazingly, 90% of our clients don’t gain any weight back and have no problem maintaining their weight loss after successfully completing the Slender Fit U ® program. This protocol has over 60 years of usage behind it and has been used successfully for weight loss since 1954. You will be absolutely amazed at the spectacular results that this program will give you. It is life-changing! Is the Program Medically Supervised? The Slender Fit U ® program is a medically supervised, safe and effective weight loss program. Each of our clients receives a physical exam, administered by one of our medical doctors or nurse practitioners at the start of the program. This exam is included in the program cost, there is no extra fee or co-pay. I am ready to get slim and skip the gym, what should I do next? Just give us a call to schedule a free consultation today. During the consultation, we explain everything involved in the program, and what to expect. Following your consultation, we will make arrangements for your medical exam. Before you know it you will see the results as the fat melts away. SEE AD PAGE 4.
