Things are Reopening, But We Still Must Remain Vigilant
O
n March 27th, Broward County issued its Shelter-in-Place order, effectively closing restaurants, sporting venues, parks, stores, gyms, and virtually every other public gathering place around. We were encouraged to stay at home. And, for the most part, that is exactly what we all did. Businesses temporarily closed, play-dates were canceled, dentist visits postponed, in-person visits with grandparents were suspended and birthday parties were moved online. As a community, we should be proud. South Florida went from being seen as the next “hot spot,” for the Coronavirus, to an area where the outbreak was largely contained. This was no small feat for a region that welcomes so many visitors from all around the world. Now things are reopening. To protect our lives and the economy, each of us must continue to do some common sense things to make sure the virus stays in check. If you don’t feel well, stay at home. Continue to wash your hands several times a day and whenever you go out. Limit close interpersonal contact when possible. Routinely clean things people frequently touch like doorknobs, steering wheels, and countertops. And, if you must interact with multiple people or cannot physically distance yourself, please continue to wear a mask. If we are smart and responsible, we will be able to get a large part of our daily routines back while a vaccine is being developed. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and our loved ones to do what we can to prevent another shut-down. The hard part is over, now it’s time for us all to follow-through and kick COVID’s butt!

Managing Mental Health During COVID-19
Telemedicine Can Help BY NANCY EAGLETON any people are understandably feeling anxious and stressed during this COVID19 pandemic. It is valid to want to talk to someone, says Rachel Rohaidy, M.D., a psychiatrist with Baptist Health South Florida, and yet social distancing has created barriers to obtaining support from family, friends and coworkers. If left untreated, anxiety and depression can worsen and have long-term effects on your health. The good news is, mental health counseling is more accessible, convenient and affordable than ever before, thanks to telemedicine.
M
It’s Mental Health Awareness Month and this year’s campaign, You Are Not Alone, reminds people that now, more than ever, the mental health community is coming together to make connection possible during a climate of physical distancing.

Top 10 Ways to Stay Connected to Your Older Loved Ones During Quarantine
W
ith seniors at most risk to catch and become ill from Coronavirus, Lisa Cini, aging expert and author of BOOM: The Baby Boomers Guide to Leveraging Technology, so that you can Preserve Your Independent Lifestyle & Thrive provides her top tricks to stay connected to your loved ones at this time. “It’s much more than the occasional phone call,” says Cini. “There are so many options to both stay connected and feel loved during this time. What can seem divisive can often pull people closer together.” Find Lisa’s top tips below: 1. Set up check-in times that are convenient for everyone. You can do this with Skype, Facetime, Zoom, Loop, WhatsApp, & WeChat. If possible, do a video call as it’s better to see a smile and easier for those with hearing loss. 2. Set up a group text with your family. This is great fun and keeps you all connected and in the loop. 3. If they have a wellness device (Fitbit, Garmin, Apple watch, Kardia, etc.), share their wellness data, and set up alert notifications. This will help to stop worrying and also give your loved one a nudge if they haven’t been active enough. 4. Set up a time to do a 10-minute group exercise,
even if its only chair exercising. It will help to keep the blood flowing, which improves brain function, reduces depression, and improves the immune system. 5. Game together! Words with friends and online video games (AARP has tons) are great to show your competitive side. Games can be as simple as tic tac toe or building entire cities with Minecraft or doing a flight simulator. 6. Create a watch party for your favorite tv shows or movies and group text, video chat, or message on Facebook. 7. Write a handwritten note or card. It’s not done much anymore, and it will remind them of a much simpler time beyond electronics. 8. Interview them with questions about their childhood and early 20’s. 9. No one wants to eat alone, so video chat during
meals! Creating a virtual “family dining” experience where everyone can share their day, laugh, and reconnect is a great mood booster. 10. Choose a book to read together and discuss it twice a week.

A
s an accredited Christian private school, providing Mainstream Education and also specializing in ESE, Autism, and other Special Needs, Christi Academy and STEPSS Academy both offer an innovative and faith-based approach to learning. The Sunrise school was created as a result of needing alternative methods of learning instead of the traditional ones. Ms. Shirley Gil, Founder and Headmaster of the academy welcomes families to her school to experience success and a “love for learning”. She recently took the time to answer some commonly asked questions about her school. Please describe Christi Academy and STEPSS Academy. Christi Academy and STEPSS Academy offer a unique, innovative way of learning for students in kindergarten through the 12th-grade (Ages 5-21). We see the student as a whole and enrich them with tools to succeed. We offer each student education, creativity, self-esteem, independence and expression through the arts. All interactions with students, staff, and administration are done through the love and inspiration of God in small classroom environments. What is your teaching philosophy/style? We
believe in the Mastery Program, where students are given opportunities to succeed. Each part of every subject is taught through various approaches offering the student the necessary skills to master the subjects which all meet the Common Core Standards. What differentiates you from the competition? We provide very individualized education and engaging approaches to student learning with unique classes and programs, plus we have a state-of-the-art sensory room. We also have cameras in every classroom and offer technology and transportation. What is special about your staff? Our staff is unique in that we are a team and work together to provide all students the best possible education. The majority of our staff is bilingual (EnglishSpanish, English-Creole, English-French) and have Masters Degrees in Special Education. All teachers and staff are ABA Assistant Certified and trained in CPR and First Aid while always continuing ongoing trainings and education. What types of extracurricular/after school activities do you offer? We offer junior varsity, varsity basketball and middle school basketball as well as
swimming, Tae Kwon Do, Music & Theater, and Band. We also have a safe, engaging and affordable Aftercare Program that provides arts & crafts, homework assistance, and life skills. In addition, there are field trips on early release days. What’s new this summer? We are offering virtual summer school. Summer school first session June 9th through June 30th. The second session is July 7th through July 28th. From 9:00 am to 1:00pm. Private tours available by appointment only. Christi Academy/STEPSS Academy is located at 3495 N. South Plantation High School Theater Teacher Named Barnes & Noble 2020 Teacher of the Year
C
ongratulations to Jason Zembuch-Young, drama and theater teacher at South Plantation High School, for being named winner of the Barnes & Noble 2020 Teacher of the Year award. Zembuch-Young was nominated by his former student Chase Dietrich, whose entry into the Barnes & Nobile My Favorite Teacher contest was chosen from thousands of entries nationwide. In February, Barnes & Noble invited students to nominate their favorite teacher by writing essays, poems, or thank-you letters that shared how their teacher influenced them. Entries were judged on the compelling nature of the teacher’s qualities, the sincerity of the student’s appreciation and the quality of expression and writing. As this year’s winner, Zembuch-Young, received a $5,000 award and another $5,000 to share with South Plantation High School. “The Barnes & Noble My Favorite Teacher contest provides an opportunity to hear from students around the country about the teachers who changed their lives and reward an exemplary teacher and school for his or her work,” said Tracy Vidakovich, vice president, Business Development for Barnes & Noble. “This year, we are pleased
to award the My Favorite Teacher award to Mr. Jason Zembuch-Young, whose commitment to his students through theater and the arts is reflected in Chase Dietrich’s inspiring essay.” In his essay, Chase praised Zembuch-Young for including all students at the school through his theater program by performing all productions
in American Sign Language. “Mr. Zembuch-Young not only taught me about the arts, which I will be pursuing in college but also how to speak up and champion for those less fortunate,” wrote Chase. “I became a teacher because I wanted to give young people something I desperately needed when I was their age – an advocate who always sees potential for more, regardless of one’s situation, and pushes others to become their better selves,” said Zembuch-Young. “The fact that Chase sees me as someone who has done that for him means more to me than anything. Thank you, Chase, for allowing me to be such an integral part of your life, and thank you, Barnes & Noble, for making sure that educators feel valued.”

Five Fun Games to Keep You and Your Family Active and Entertained
K
eeping your family happy, active, and entertained is a hard task in this day and age. With technology and screens as most kids’ go-to entertainment, parents need a fresh and entertaining way to keep their kids outdoors and active. Our City Media has gathered five of our favorite outdoor games to share with you.
1. Rollors- Offers family fun for all ages. Kids spend hours outdoors perfecting their game. The game is like a combination of Bocce Ball and Horseshoes. Each player has a chance to show off their skill as they roll wooden discs to the opposing goal post. Points are awarded based on where and how the discs land. Each game comes packaged in a handy carrying case, making it easy to bring to the park or the beach. www.rollors.com MSRP $49.95
2. CROSSNET - Have you ever imagined combining two of your favorite childhood games? Crossnet does just that! Four square merges with volleyball for an entirely new game! Our families loved the competition. Crossnet can be played indoors or out and takes just minutes to set up on grass, sand, or a gym floor! Adjustable heights make it great for all ages! available on www. crossnetgame.com MSRP $149.99 24 MAY/JUNE 2020 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
3. Corn Hole- If you grew up in the South, then you have probably played a game or two of Corn Hole. The picnic, poolside, and tailgating classic is loved by millions. Players take turns throwing 16-ounce bags of corn kernels at a raised platform with a hole in the far end. The platforms are frequently decorated in a family’s favorite team or college colors. We got ours at www.allamericantailgate.com unfinished and we customized it to our liking (another fun family project). NCAA regulationsized boards retail from $110 to $250 depending on how fancy you want it. 4. Spike Ball- Some say that if volleyball and foursquare had a baby it’d be named Spikeball. Spikeball is our family’s goto for lawn and beach fun. It is so popular, that there are now 100s of “round net” tournaments worldwide. www.spikeball.com Kits start at $59.99 5. Wiffle Ballmay be America’s original backyard pastime. Similar to baseball/softball this classic game is great for small groups, yards of almost any size or shape, and a whole bunch of trash talk. A bat and ball combo can be purchased for under $5.00 making this fun family game a steal. www.wiffle.com Starting at $5

ASK THE EXPERT
Ankle Ligament Injuries in Teenagers and Adults BY DR. JOHN GOODNER he ankle is a complex joint consisting of bones, ligaments, cartilage, tendons and joint lining. The primary motion of the ankle is up and down. It has limited side-to-side motion. When excess motion occurs from side to side, ankle ligaments can tear. Ligaments connect bones together. Once the ligaments are torn instability can develop. On the outside of the ankle there are three ligaments. The inside of the ankle has five and connecting the tibia and fibula are three more. Ankle ligament injuries can occur from stepping off of a step and rolling the ankle, to playing sports and coming down and landing on somebody’s foot. It is also very common in women who wear heels and roll their ankle to the outside, causing damage to the ligament structure of the ankle. When ligament injuries occur, it is most often associated with a feeling of a crack or a pop, and is associated with pain, swelling, occasionally discoloration and inability to weightbear. It is always best to evaluate these ankle injuries as soon as possible. A thorough history and physical will allow the doctor to identify the ligaments that have been injured and the extent of the injury. X-rays are taken and occasionally MRIs if the suspected damage is significant.
T
Treatment is then aimed at reducing the damage to the ligaments and giving the ligaments an opportunity to heal primarily. Treatment for these injuries could be as simple as RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation). For a very simple stretching injury to the ankle ligaments, an ankle brace is used most often. When the ligaments are torn, then immobilization is absolutely necessary. A boot or a cast is applied for two to six weeks. Patients are allowed to immediately weightbear. Cross training is completely allowed. Avoid any type of anti-inflammatory. This will help to reduce the inflammation but at the cost of allowing those ligaments to heal because inflammation is a critical part of the healing process. Physical therapy may be necessary after cast removal. A return to sports could take four to eight weeks. Chronic instability may develop if treatment has not been initiated immediately. This may be corrected with a ligament tightening procedure. Long-term prognosis is almost always excellent. n Dr. John Goodner is a Board Qualified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in sports medicine foot and ankle injuries, foot and ankle arthroscopy, lower extremity trauma, and lower extremity deformities in infants, children, teens and adults. Miami Dolphin’s WR Albert Wilson and His Foundation Raise Funds,Food and Critical Life Needs to Support Broward County Children in Foster Care
T
he Albert Wilson Foundation, founded by Miami Dolphins wide receiver Albert Wilson to enrich the lives of children in foster care, today announced its ongoing efforts and campaign to support HANDY (Helping Abused Neglected Disadvantaged Youth) with crisis relief during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 10-week campaign, which began on March 30, will run through June 7, 2020. At the halfway point of the campaign, through its fundraising efforts, The Albert Wilson Foundation has provided HANDY youth and its caretakers with 550 meals, job opportunities and raised more than $10,000 to directly benefit HANDY youth and families. While this is a difficult time for everyone, the hardship for those in foster and relative/nonrelative care associated with the child dependency system, are especially severe. During the past month, 75% of HANDY youth and their caretakers have lost their jobs. Many of these families were already living
paycheck-to-paycheck and were teetering on the edge of homeless prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, these families have no idea how to pay for life essentials such as rent and food. “COVID-19 has caused an unprecedented and unmeasurable amount of hardship and loss throughout the world. As we enter May, which is National Foster Care Awareness month, The Albert Wilson Foundation hopes to shine a light on the often overlooked foster community and will continue to do its part to provide relief and support during these trying times,” said Jamaal May, Executive Director of The Albert Wilson Foundation. “It is our privilege to support and work in conjunction with HANDY and its great organization during this pandemic.” The Albert Wilson Foundation has received substantial cash donations from the Miami Dolphins organization, Jägermeister USA on behalf of YesJulz’s Little Rascals Foundation and Broward County Clerk of Courts, which will go directly towards The Albert Wilson Foundation campaign that benefits HANDY. Additionally, through The Albert Wilson Foundation, Fit Fixins, a healthy food and lifestyle meal prep business based in Port St. Lucie, has generously donated 300 meals to HANDY families, a value of more than $3,000. Also, the Phoenix Organization, which is a franchisee that owns and operates more than 31 Burger King’s, Taco Bell’s, and Denny’s in Broward County has donated 250 value meals and extended special consideration for employment opportunities for HANDY
youth over the age of 16 and their caretakers. ESPN Radio West Palm Beach 106.3 FM is also running donated, promotional spots twice daily through the end of the campaign to help raise awareness. To make a tax-exempt donation to The Albert Wilson Foundation, visit: https://albertwilsonfoundation.org/donation/. All donations received through Sunday, June 7, will directly benefit HANDY South Florida. About The Albert Wilson Foundation The Albert Wilson Foundation is a charity founded by Miami Dolphins WR Albert Wilson to enrich the lives of children in foster care. The Albert Wilson Foundation strives to change the destiny of foster children and break the cycle of abuse, neglect, and abandonment. It works to support youth during their transition in and out of foster care. Its goal is to provide scholarships to those wishing to continue their education outside the state of Florida, in addition to rewarding youth who continue to excel in the classroom and extracurriculars, despite all obstacles and circumstances. For more information visit http:// www.albertwilsonfoundation.org. About HANDY HANDY, which stands for Helping Abused Neglected Disadvantaged Youth, is an award-winning 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. Founded in 1985, HANDY has met the needs of more than 45,000 Broward County children in foster and relative/nonrelative care associated with the child dependency system. THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient.
Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation
During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

The Corona Virus Pandemic is bringing out the best in us and Raisa is giving back to first responders by making and donating face masks. It is sad when you think about it that PPE which costs only 75 cents is such a scarce commodity causing those on the front line to risk their lives to save ours. Raisa has teamed up with a local business Beautiful Windows Blinds in Davie and in collaboration with their drapery department is making double-lined face masks. She has made several hundred to date and is shipping out to Floridabased healthcare facilities. Why? “Why Not” is the question Raisa urges us to ask. Raisa says life changed as we all know it. Spring Break was here and nothing was the same. The new “normal” of no school, no hanging out with friends, no going out, isolation and social distancing was unnerving. She said instead of turning inward and brooding, she turned a gloomy situation into something positive and great. Why not make masks? The news is tell-

Family Law During A Pandemic BY EVAN H. BARON, ESQ. e are all feeling the effects of the Pandemic. Whether it be from health issues for you or your family or friends or financial issues which seem to be impacting almost everyone. Those of us involved in family law understand that there are additional issues which many individuals may be dealing with. Everyone should be aware that although the Courts are closed for live, in-person hearings; the Family division is actually fully operational. Hearings are taking place daily, either by way of telephone conferencing, if it is a simple non-evidentiary matter, or by way of Zoom teleconferencing. Judges, attorneys, and participants will simply sign on with a previously e-mailed ID number and the hearing will proceed. It has actually been highly successful and has helped the Courts avoid a possible “log jam” of cases when the courthouse eventually re-opens. Mediations are also being conducted via teleconferencing. Although my office is closed and I am not meeting with people face to face, I am speaking with clients through phone calls or zoom meetings. My staff is also working remotely, and we have been able to help our clients with all of their issues. What are the issues that the family courts have been dealing with because of the closing of businesses and the “stay at home” orders? As you might expect, many individuals who have been either furloughed or terminated from their employment may have an existing alimony or child support obligation. It may be a short term loss of income or something more long term. Abatements (short term) or modifications (long term) may be able to be filed to seek relief. If the party is to receive either alimony or child support, but the payments have stopped; there may be pleadings that can be filed on that party’s behalf as well. Unfortunately, often times when individuals are regularly staying at home with their spouse or significant other, there is a rise in domestic violence cases. The Courts’ domestic violence courts are operating, and an individual who is a victim of domestic violence as defined by Florida Statutes can apply for an Injunction (restraining order). Although it would perhaps seem that during this exceedingly difficult time individuals would try and pull together, the reality is that relationships that have been somewhat ‘shaky” often fall apart under the stress of it all. Dissolutions of marriage can be filed if either or both parties feel it is best to end the relationship. Of course, it would be exceedingly difficult and emotionally challenging to engage in a highly contested case, while living under the same roof. To avoid possible confrontations and keep peace in the home, we have been recommending the Collaborative process which can be accomplished through teleconferencing. This process allows couples to work as a team, along with their attorneys; a mental health and a financial expert; with the goal to reach an agreement through negotiation and not litigation.

Estate Planning During Times of Uncertainty BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE ur world has changed. As I sit at my desk drafting this column it is difficult to distill my thoughts into a cogent message. So much has happened over the past 60 days. So much has happened in the past week. And when this column is published in late May/early June, I cannot predict where we will be. My practice has changed. Emergency Florida Bar rules currently prohibit me from meeting with clients in my office. But I am now an expert at setting up Zoom meetings and am able to effectively communicate with clients to provide the legal counsel they seek. We have also devised a new process for the review and ultimately the execution of estate planning documents before witnesses and a notary. It’s a bit like having your food or packages safely delivered to your home. Estate planning is one way that we can prepare for uncertainty. We try to imagine all possible scenarios and then establish structures, give instruction, and empower others to implement our vision of how the future should be handled in our absence. So I ask you to consider the following. Do you have an estate plan? Is it up to date? Does it adequately address your particular family situation including who will care for your minor children? What about a child with special needs? Does it provide for the financial needs of your loved ones? Will, it layout a smooth path for the continuation and control of your business? Begin to address these important matters. Reach out to your estate planning attorney and financial advisor. Ask questions. Learn about options and choices and consequences. And make a plan. As most of us are at home and social distancing, some may consider using an online service such as LegalZoom or Suze Orman to create their estate planning documents. Keep in mind that estate planning is so much more than filling out forms. You are paying for legal advice and counsel. It is my opinion that creating documents without receiving the benefit of legal counsel can undermine the entire purpose of estate planning and could result in unexpected consequences that prove costly to correct. Furthermore, keep in mind that estate planning is something you do for your loved ones, not for yourself. You owe it to your family to make sure that everything is done correctly, the first time. If you don’t have an estate planning attorney, now is the time to connect with one. Fortunately, there are many qualified estate planning attorneys in this area. Find the person who has competence in the field, has a process that provides the opportunity to discuss and explore various options, and has the personality and “bedside manner” that makes you feel comfortable. Do research, make calls. Life can change in a minute. Now, more than ever, what are you waiting for?

REAL ESTATE
From My Heart... BY ZONA HORTON had been so focused on matching buyers to sellers for so long that this “unprecedented event” we are now experiencing has made me rethink what is really important. Having endured the aftermath of “911,” many of us were so sure that our economy and our Real Estate markets were going to tank and never rebound. In South Florida, the Real Estate market barely suffered for a few weeks. My colleagues and I were surprised to see how quickly it came back. Even though we were stunned by the event, we moved forward. So, how many birthdays, celebrations, graduations, weddings, or necessary operations have to be postponed or canceled? What about a routine lunch with a friend? Shopping? A night on the town with your tribe? Travel? Visiting my grandchildren who now live in another state? Facetime is no substitute for the warm embrace of your most cherished grandchild. My husband and I enjoyed the simplest of pleasures -- attending live music concerts and attending our grandchildren’s sporting events. After “911” air-travel changed. Today leaving your driveway has changed – we now wear a face shield, mask, gloves and hand sanitizer . . . all that until a medical remedy becomes widely available. How will our financial or Real Estate markets be affected? One thing I continue to learn is how little I control this stuff called “life.” As self-sufficient as I operate my business and my life, I realized I took the simplest of needs for granted – coffee, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and paper towels. Who knew we would be scrambling for those items which were previously stocked to the brim in our stores? Now when I’m in my car and pass a truck driver, I wave and throw out an “air” hug. I find myself having a safe-distance conversation with my mail carrier! Whoever thought I would “face-time” my doctor! Even though all workers are “essential” (and Real Estate agents fall into that category), I have come to appreciate each and every worker I have come in contact with – from a distance. I’ve always held our police force and firefighters in the highest regard. Now I find myself looking through a similar lens at all of the workers – whether they are labeled “essential workers” by the government or not. Most will survive. Most will thrive. Our economy and Real Estate markets will return and perhaps be even more robust. Recently, Sam Khater, the Chief Economist at Freddie Mac, stated: “Although the uncertainty of the crisis means forecasts of economic activity are more unclear than usual, we expect that most of the economic damage from the virus will be contained to the first half of the year. Going forward, we should see a recovery starting in the second half of 2020.” In other words, this, too, shall pass. Things will return, but return to “a new different.” God bless those “essential workers” who protect us and fight for us in the camp of this invisible enemy. May we always appreciate our lives, our homes, those who love us, and the every-day heroes who serve us and serve us well.

ASK THE SHERIFF
Demonstrating Service In Serving BY SHERIFF GREGORY TONY efore I begin this message, I want to take a moment to remember a beloved member of the Broward Sheriff’s Office family, Communications Operator III Nikima Thompson, who sadly lost her brave battle with COVID-19 on May 4. Nikima was a dedicated 16-year veteran of BSO and the first communications operator to die in the line of duty in Florida. We pay tribute to her sacrifice and honor her service to this community. She is survived by her mother, Geraldine Wilson, who is also battling COVID-19; her father, Herman Wilson; her sister, Gina Stewart; and her four children, Aran Jr., Isaiah, Justin and Heaven. Rest in peace, Nikima. You are greatly missed. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to major disruptions in our traditional way of life and resulted in tremendous hardships for many. For the past several months, we have confronted this unprecedented challenge. As we navigate these uncertain times, we do so having learned the power and value of community and the virtues of working together for a common good. It has been truly remarkable to see the Broward community step up and come together as one. Friends and strangers alike have united, largely by staying apart, to help slow the spread of this deadly virus and protect the most vulnerable among us. The men and women of BSO share in that commitment. We play a unique and critical role in combatting this crisis. We are not only ensuring the safety of the public, but we are also extending our assistance beyond calls for service to provide support for the overall wellbeing of Broward County. Let me tell you some ways BSO is meeting community needs: ▸ The pandemic has led to tough financial difficulties with many people struggling to provide the most basic food necessities for their families. BSO has established Operation Helping Hands whereby we partner with communitybased organizations and Feeding South Florida to help provide groceries to those in need. We are also delivering food to the doorsteps of our senior citizens who are unable to leave their homes. ▸ We know through our community policing initiatives that small and simple acts of kindness can have huge and lasting impact. While social distancing has prevented us from coming together, we have been honored to participate in birthday parades and the like to ensure important milestones are not forgotten, and instead are occasions to remember. Similarly, we’ve participated in heartwarming displays of support for our hospital partners who are on the front lines fighting this virus with us. It has been an absolute pleasure to provide some joy and see the smiles these parades have brought. ▸ We have witnessed our deputies and other employees go above and beyond the call of duty to help others who are struggling. Recently, deputies observed a mother and her six-year-old son sleeping in their car. After learning they were homeless, the deputies got them a hotel room for the week and bought them groceries. As of our last contact with the woman, she was able to gain employment and is working toward getting on her feet. It’s an honor to work alongside such good and decent people. ▸ Our participation in the Law Enforcement Torch Run has been a long-standing tradition of ours to support Special Olympics. While the run was canceled this year, we still showed our love and support for these inspirational athletes and participated in virtual runs across the county. As an organization, we remain committed to supporting our community partners and will continue to find creative ways to do so. These are just a few examples that demonstrate how together we accomplish more. These past few months have presented us with unexpected circumstances and challenges. While our commitment as an organization to work alongside this community to serve and meet their needs is not new, it is stronger now than ever before. Service Equals Reward Sheriff Gregory Tony

Hi I’m Brady! I am a eight-year old Matli-tzu. That means my mommy was a Maltese and my daddy was a Shih Tzu. It makes me very cute. Plus, I don’t shed as much as some other dogs, so my master isn’t allergic to me. I love laying on people’s laps, but I don’t really like my family’s cat, Grover.
