June Joy: Embracing Sunshine, Pride, & Milestones

Welcome to June, the month that ushers in the vibrant South Florida summer! As the heat and humidity rise, we invite you to embrace the essence of our region. Don’t forget your sunscreen and a refreshing beverage as you venture outdoors. With our winter visitors bidding adieu, let’s relish the less crowded conditions and bask in the beauty of our community.

June 10th marks the last day of school for Broward County Schools, a significant milestone for many students. As high schools and colleges gear up for their graduation ceremonies, we celebrate the hard work and dedication of our young people. These ceremonies are not just about moving on, but also about reflecting with pride on their achievements and looking forward with anticipation to the next chapter.

In recognition of graduation and summer vacation, we celebrate some of our community’s most impressive teachers. Be sure to check out the profiles in this magazine’s special “Leaders of Learning” section!

June is not just about graduations and summer vacations; it’s also Pride Month! This is a time to reflect on the progress made in the fight for LGBTQ rights. Let’s celebrate our diversity and strive for a more inclusive world.

Fathers across the country are looking forward to June 16th. Father’s Day was conceived in 1909 by Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Inspired by Mother’s Day, she wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran and single parent who raised six children. It became an official holiday in 1966 when President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. We are so excited about all June of fers; enjoy!

On June 19, 1865, Union Army General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas to enforce Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation in the last and most remote place in the South. Local Firefighter Inspires Youth Wins PuroClean Superhero Campaign

James Murad, a Tamarac firefighter from Davie, is being celebrated for his bravery and commitment to helping others in the PuroClean National Superhero Day Campaign. He stands out as a true hero among many impressive nominees, praised by Deputy Chief Jonathan Fraser and Fire Chief Michael Annese of Tamarac Fire Rescue. Murad’s fearless actions and quick thinking have saved lives and inspired his fellow firefighters and the whole community.

Apart from his firefighting duties, Murad spends time mentoring young people who want to become first responders. He leads the Firefighter Cadet Program, teaching essential skills to prepare cadets for the challenges of the job. Let’s learn more about Murad’s journey and why he’s the winner of the 2024 Superhero Day Campaign.

Born and raised in Davie, Murad always dreamed of helping others. After serving in the Army for four years, he felt even more strongly about serving his community. He briefly went to college but decided firefighting was his true calling.

Murad has a knack for working with young people. Before joining the Tamarac Fire Department, he taught EMT courses at a local high school. Since 2018, he has been busy both at work and at home, taking on the role of lead instructor in the cadet program and becoming a husband and father.

Two years ago, Murad revamped the cadet program to better prepare teens interested in becoming firefighters or EMTs. Under

his guidance, cadets learn important skills like wearing firefighting gear, conducting search drills, and using hoses.

The cadet program also competes nationally, and this year, they participated in Coral Springs. Murad understands how to work with teenagers and believes in providing support and guidance to help them succeed.

Looking ahead, Murad wants to keep improving the cadet program and help graduates find jobs. For him, being a firefighter isn’t just a job; it’s a way of life. He values the bonds he shares with his fellow firefighters and cherishes spending time with his family.

When he’s not busy saving lives or spending time with family, Murad enjoys staying active and playing golf with friends. His dedication to service and bravery make him a true hero in the eyes of many.

Saint Gregory School Students Experience City Government

Last Friday, sixth graders from Saint Gregory School had a unique learning opportunity. Plantation Councilmembers Denise Horland and Louis Reinstein guided them through an immersive experience to understand the role of the City Council. This educational outing provided invaluable insights for the students.

The students interacted with Plantation’s police, fire, and procurement

departments, gaining firsthand knowledge of their operations. They were introduced to the City Council meeting process, where city guests listened, provided testimony, and voted on a proposed project.

During a mock city meeting, the students took on roles such as City Council members, environmental group representatives, and neighboring residents. Their arguments and discussions

were impressive, demonstrating their understanding of local government.

Plantation operates under a MayorCouncil form of government, which encourages community participation. The City Council meets regularly to discuss and make decisions on city matters. These meetings are open to the public, allowing citizens to voice their opinions and influence decisions.

City departments like Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Finance, Police, and Fire are managed by directors appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Council. This system ensures a balance of power, with the Mayor handling executive functions and the Council managing legislative responsibilities.

This hands-on experience provided the students with a deeper appreciation of local government and the importance of civic engagement. Well done to the students and everyone involved!

Children's Harbor Hosts Third Annual Career Day Expo for Foster Youth

For many students in Broward County, "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day" is an exciting opportunity to explore potential career paths by spending the day at their parent’s or guardian's workplace. However, for students currently in foster care, this day can be a reminder of the challenges they face without a parent or guardian to accompany them. To bridge this gap, Children's Harbor hosted its Third Annual Career Day Expo, providing a meaningful and inspiring experience for these youth.

The Career Day Expo was organized by Children's Harbor’s Academic and Life Skills team and featured representatives from 40 companies, government agencies, and the armed forces. This event offered students the chance to explore various career opportunities, interact with business professionals, and attend business etiquette and networking sessions. Throughout the Expo, students engaged with professionals from

diverse fields, learning about different industries and what it takes to succeed in each one. After the event, each student chose an industry that most piqued their interest. The Children's Harbor team then arranged for hands-on experiences at the selected companies on "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day," allowing students to gain real-world insights into their chosen careers.

“It’s truly a gift to be able to show these young people the kind of promising opportunities available to them,” said Children’s Harbor President and CEO Tiffani Dhooge. “For kids who come from traumatic backgrounds, the need to learn what’s expected of them in the often-intimidating work world is especially important and can positively change the trajectory of their life forever.”

Children's Harbor, established in 1996, is a nationally accredited nonprofit agency dedicated to supporting

families in the community and providing safe shelter and support for teens in foster care. The organization’s main campus in Pembroke Pines offers a nurturing environment for teenagers in foster care and their younger siblings. Additionally, Children's Harbor runs a family strengthening program to prevent children from entering foster care by offering in-home counseling and support to struggling families. For young adults aged 18-23 who have aged out of foster care, Children's Harbor provides housing, wrap-around support, and independent living programs to help them transition into adulthood.

▸ With a mission to break cycles of trauma and provide a harbor of hope and healing, Children's Harbor is committed to helping foster youth grow into healthy, educated, and productive adults. The Career Day Expo is just one of the many ways the organization empowers young people to envision and achieve a brighter future.

Plantation Historical Society Hosts Annual "A Plant Affair" Event

The Plantation Historical Society delighted gardening enthusiasts and families alike with the 2024 "A Plant Affair" event, held at the Plantation Historical Museum. The annual gathering, now a staple in the community's calendar, once again showcased a vibrant array of plants, expert-led workshops, and engaging activities for attendees of all ages.

The event kicked off with a bustling plant sale that featured a diverse selection of flora. Local nurseries and dedicated plant enthusiasts offered everything from native plants and exotic species to succulents and herbs. Gardeners, both novice and seasoned, found plenty of treasures to take home, with experts on hand to provide valuable tips on plant care and maintenance.

Educational workshops were a highlight of the affair, providing visitors with the opportunity to learn from horticultural experts. Sessions covered a range of topics, including sustainable gardening practices, landscape design, and tips for growing healthy, vibrant plants. These workshops not only enhanced the knowledge of gardening aficionados but also inspired many newcomers to cultivate their green thumbs.

Vendor booths added to the festive atmosphere, offering a variety of gardening supplies, tools, and decorative items. From handcrafted garden decor to the latest in gardening technology, there was something to pique the interest of every attendee. These vendors provided the perfect complement to the plant sales, ensuring that visitors left with both the plants and the tools they needed to succeed in their gardening endeavors.

Families enjoyed the numerous children's activities, designed to educate and entertain young visitors. Craft stations, interactive displays, and gardening games ensured that kids had a memorable and educational experience. The

event's family-friendly approach made it a popular outing for parents and children alike, fostering a love for nature and gardening in the younger generation.

"A Plant Affair" also served as a significant fundraiser for the Plantation Historical Society, with proceeds supporting the Plantation Historical Museum. This support helps preserve the rich history and heritage of Plantation, Florida, ensuring that the community's story continues to be told for generations to come.

The 2024 "A Plant Affair" was more than just an event; it was a celebration of community, nature, and the joy of gardening. The Plantation Historical Society successfully brought together residents in a shared love of plants and gardening, making it a standout event of the year.

CELEBRATING EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATORS

Our City believes in celebrating the individuals who profoundly impact our community. This June, we are excited to dedicate a special section of our publication to Teacher Appreciation. This section will highlight the extraordinary efforts and accomplishments of some educators who go above and beyond to shape our children’s future.

Teachers are the heart of our community, dedicating countless hours to ensure that each student receives the best education possible. Their commitment extends beyond the classroom, touching lives in ways that often go unnoticed. In this special section, we will share the stories of some of our most inspiring teachers, showcasing their dedication, passion, and innovative educational approaches.

Many highly successful people credit teachers who impacted them as children. One particularly successful person who credits a teacher’s influence is Oprah Winfrey. Oprah has often spoken about her fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Duncan, who she says was the first person to make her feel valued and help her believe in her own potential.

Mrs. Duncan’s encouragement and support profoundly affected Oprah, helping to shape her into the confident and booming media mogul she is today. Oprah attributes much of her early development and later success to the positive influence

of this dedicated teacher.

Through these profiles, we aim to illuminate the incredible work our teachers do every day. Their stories are a testament to the power of education and the profound difference one dedicated individual can make.

Join us in celebrating these outstanding educators and recognizing their vital role in our community.

Pride is more than a celebration; it’s a powerful declaration of identity, unity, and resilience. In the context of public safety, Pride signifies the commitment to ensuring that everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, is treated with dignity and respect. For the Broward Multi-Agency Pride Coalition, Pride embodies its mission to foster an inclusive environment where the LGBTQ+ community is protected and celebrated for their contributions to society.

In the vibrant landscape of Broward County, the Broward Multi-Agency Pride Coalition shines brightly, charting a progressive course through its collaborative endeavors. Founded in December 2020, this coalition stands as a testament to its members’ unwavering commitment to promoting safety, inclusion, and understanding for the LGBTQ+ community within law enforcement agencies, fire rescue departments, and various levels of government organizations at the city, state, and federal levels. As we celebrate Pride Month and reflect on the strides made in the fight for equality, it’s crucial to recognize the pivotal role played by this coalition in championing LGBTQ+ rights.

United in Diversity, Stronger Together

to protect and serve them.

At the core of the coalition’s mission lies the concept of representation. By appointing liaisons and allies within each participating organization, the coalition ensures that the LGBTQ+ community’s voices, concerns, and experiences are not only heard but prioritized. This direct line of communication serves as a lifeline, offering support, guidance, and advocacy within their respective departments and the wider community.

effect of positive change that resonates throughout South Florida and beyond.

The coalition’s work is a testament to the power of unity, the importance of representation, and the transformative potential of collective action. It reminds us that, despite our challenges, there is always hope in unity.

In the spirit of Pride, let us stand in solidarity with the Broward Multi-Agency Pride Coalition and reaffirm our commitment to building a more just, inclusive, and compassionate society for all. Together, we can continue to march towards a future where every individual is celebrated, every voice is heard, and every heart is filled with pride.

The birth of the Broward Multi-Agency Pride Coalition emerged from an acute awareness of the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in accessing public safety services and working within these agencies. Historically, LGBTQ+ individuals have encountered discrimination, bias, and exclusion in various aspects of society, including law enforcement and public safety sectors. However, the coalition aims to rewrite this narrative by breaking down barriers and building trust between the LGBTQ+ community and those sworn

From training frontline personnel to participating in town hall meetings, every initiative underscores the coalition’s steadfast commitment to equity and justice. By developing and implementing inclusive policies, comprehensive training, and targeted outreach initiatives, the coalition actively works to address the unique public safety concerns of the LGBTQ+ community. In doing so, it not only enhances the safety and well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals but also strengthens the fabric of the community as a whole.

The impact of the Broward Multi-Agency Pride Coalition extends far beyond the borders of Broward County. It serves as a beacon for other counties seeking to foster greater inclusivity and understanding within their jurisdictions. By sharing their experiences and best practices, the coalition has inspired others to follow suit, including neighboring regions like Miami-Dade and Palm Beach County, sparking a ripple

BROWARD MULTI-AGENCY PRIDE COALITION:
Our City Plantation / June 2024 / OurCityMedia.com / 25

For over half a century, our community has celebrated Pride, which commemorates the Stonewall Uprising on June 28th, 55 years ago. Since 1969, we have made great strides in our quest for equality, from marriage, the right to adopt and build a family, jobs, housing, and healthcare security to the right to serve in the military while being true to ourselves—all in under 55 years. The public acceptance of our community has been swift but not complete and certainly not without pushback.

The last few years with book bans and “Don’t Say Gay” legislation were stark reminders that complacency is not an option

Embracing Pride & Fighting for Equality

and “Silence = Death” still looms overhead. The differences between 2024 and 1969 are enormous, but we cannot take our eyes off those filled with prejudice, hate, and anger. As other nations institute the death penalty for their LGBTQ+ populations, we can be sure that like-minded people are in our midst as well. Keeping our organizations well-funded, our institutions healthy, and our community informed is not simply an option but a necessity.

As we look to the future and the next 50+ years, we can celebrate that we are a talented community able to stand up for itself. We must never forget that our community thrives in every other community regardless of color, race, nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender, or place of origin. We are on all sides of every issue and carry the good and bad of the world in which we live. Those shared experiences give us strength. It allows us to be the world’s unifiers, even in these most divided times.

We even have a month dedicated to our efforts toward global unification: June is Pride Month. We have the opportunity to bring everyone under the rainbow flag, for those colors represent not only the LGBTQ+ population but everyone. We know how these other people think, how they feel, and why they act as they do. They are our parents, siblings, neighbors, and friends. We work with and live with them, and by welcoming them under our rainbow tent, we give them the communit y they seek.

Yes, we have a great deal more to do to protect our LGBTQ+ family from those who fear us because of who we love. Still, by being more inclusive, by being more welcoming, by reminding

others we are all more alike than we are different, and by holding to our belief that we are all the colors of the rainbow, we can weaken the grasp of hate and expand the meaning of liberation and Pride. So, this June, wherever you are, invite everyone you know to Pride; it should not matter who they love.

The Stonewall National Museum & Archives in Fort Lauderdale is a beacon for LGBTQ+ history and culture. Founded in 1973, it houses over 34,000 books and more than 6 million pages of archival materials, making it one of the largest gay archives in the U.S. The museum offers a rich collection of artifacts, documents, and photographs from the gay rights movement, providing interactive educational programs and special events throughout the year. With its extensive library and archival resources, the museum serves as a crucial hub for scholars, researchers, and the public to explore and celebrate LGBTQ+ heritage.

United Way of Broward County is a dedicated supporter of Pride Month, an annual celebration that honors the LGBTQ+ rights movement, highlights LGBTQ+ culture, and encourages everyone to embrace their true selves.

Recognizing the importance of LGBTQ+ individuals’ well-being in enhancing the quality of life in Broward County, United Way funds numerous partner organizations and agencies that support their mental and physical health.

One of these esteemed partner organizations is SunServe (www.sunserve.org) in Wilton Manors. Established in 2002 as the first agency providing social services to the LGBTQ+ community in South Florida, SunServe is a collective of advocates, allies, and champions for economically disadvantaged and marginalized youth, families, adults, and seniors.

Misty Alicea, Director of Women’s Programs, Transgender Services, and LGBTQ+ Competency Training at SunServe, recently shared insights on the organization’s impact on Broward County’s collec tive health.

Why is it important to have a social service agency dedicated to the needs of the LGBTQ+ community?

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Wilton Manors is the second-gayest city in the U.S., and Fort Lauderdale is the gayest mid-sized city in the U.S. SunServe is a nonprofit providing a safe, inclusive space for our clients to receive mental and physical care without discrimination,

prejudice, or stigma. We address unique health disparities among LGBTQ+ people, such as higher rates of mental health issues and substance abuse.

Grants from United Way of Broward County support our health and wellness programs and enable us to connect clients to clinicians who treat LGBTQ+ individuals with respect and understanding.

Over the past two decades, we have supported the health of thousands in the LGBTQ+ community and their families, friends, loved ones, spouses, parents, children, coworkers, employers, and businesses.

When people thrive, our entire community thrives. Empowering just one person can bring about enormous changes in the collective mindset. Much like the United Way of Broward County, we are building a healthier Broward County for everyone who lives here.

What does Pride Month mean to you?

Pride Month is a platform that empowers people and a time to acknowledge the progress we have made and the progress still needed. When I participate in a Pride event, I experience a celebration of inclusion—it’s LGBTQ+ people, allies, supporters, and heteronormative people.

Pride is a celebration of everyone’s rights and freedoms. At SunServe, we celebrate Pride 365 days a year, and I know United Way of Broward County does as well.

How does United Way of Broward County support SunServe’s great work?

The teams at United Way are fantastic allies. Several of SunServe’s programs are entirely reliant on support from them. The needs in Broward County are tremendous, our caseload is increasing exponentially, and we are available to our clients 24/7. Because of United Way, SunServe is expanding its reach and impact. The dedication and contributions of its teams enable SunServe to provide optimal care to an incredibly diverse population.

PLANTATION UPDATE

State of the City

I issued my first-ever State of the City address, first to employees and then to the general public in April. Our permitting process has improved, with more accountability and some time-consuming and unnecessary steps being eliminated. We are partway through adding 14 pickleball courts across the city and we are undergoing a complete code rewrite.

The addition of a stormwater manager will prepare us better in flooding situations and body-worn cameras for police are on the way. See my 30-minute address at Plantation.org.

Government by the Teens

Plantation Middle School students visited City Hall as part of a program of County Commissioner Hazelle Rogers. They took on the roles as the Mayor, City Council members, and department heads and held a formal meeting where they addressed resident comments, approved purchases, discussed and voted on a new beautification program.

Sandy Gracey of Park East received a proclamation recognizing her for embodying the spirit of volunteerism.

State Representatives Lisa Dunkley and Daryl Campbell, joined Commissioner Rogers and Plantation Council members Jennifer Andreu, Tim Fadgen, and Denise Horland helped.

Communication Boards

We unveiled a bilingual playground communication board at Plantation Woods Park. Nine such boards were donated to the city by speech-language pathologist Pamela Rowe.

Our bigger parks will also have boards. A communication board features a composition of images specifically selected to support communication by pointing to or touching one or multiple images.

PLANNING A BARBECUE IS LIKE PLANNING YOUR ESTATE

Memorial Day weekend signals the beginning of summer and backyard barbecues. Although a cookout may be casual, good planning is crucial. This is true for estate planning, too. A little planning goes a long way to prevent leaving you and your loved ones in a pickle:

The Menu - What Do You Own?

When you plan a barbecue, one of the first steps is to decide what foods to include on the menu. If you buy the burgers and hot dogs but forget the buns, the menu and party may be ruined.

Similarly, in estate planning, you first need to determine what you own. Estate Planning Attorneys usually provide a checklist to inventory all assets, from property to bank accounts, noting if they are owned individually or jointly with your spouse or another person. Strategies can then be suggested to provide for your loved ones and achieve any other goals you may have, such as gifting, minimizing taxes and distributing assets.

The Invitations - Who Are Your Beneficiaries?

Just like you choose your barbecue guests, you'll need to decide who inherits your assets. It's not just about family; it could include friends or charities. You may wish to provide grandchildren with incentives to attend college or start a business. If a child has an addiction, you may decide not to provide them with an outright inheritance, and instead, create a trust designed to prevent them from using your hard-earned money to support their habit.

Serving Sizes - How Much Does Each Person Get?

At your cookout, you don't serve the same portions to everyone. Your six-foot-tall adult son will likely need a bigger portion than your two-year-old granddaughter. Similarly, in estate planning, you might not want to divide your assets equally among beneficiaries. We can help you tailor distributions based on individual needs and circumstances, avoiding potential conflicts down the line.

Depending on what you own, it may also be important to give certain accounts or property to one beneficiary and not the others. For example, if you have a property or business in which only one child is actively engaged, splitting ownership among multiple siblings may set them up for fights and destroy relationships.

Extra Touches - Personalizing Your Plan

Just as you add extra touches such as umbrellas, tablecloths, or strings of lights to make your barbecue special, you can personalize your estate plan, such as writing letters to loved ones and specifying who gets sentimental items, such as jewelry or artwork. These gestures can make your plan more meaningful and help prevent family disputes.

Lettuce help you plan: call us so we can ketchup!

Don't wait until you're in hot water to plan your estate. Just like a well-prepared barbecue, a thoughtfully crafted estate plan ensures everyone's satisfaction. Call us today to spill the beans about your estate planning goals, and we will help you create an estate plan that will satisfy your craving to provide a secure future for yourself and your family.

BEATING THE HEAT: PREVENTING HEAT STROKES IN PETS

As the temperature rises, so does the risk of heat strokes in our furry companions. As responsible pet owners, it's crucial to be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and take proactive measures to keep our pets safe during the scorching summer months.

1. Know the Signs:

Recognizing the symptoms of heat stroke is the first step in preventing a potentially life-threatening situation. Watch out for excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, and collapse. If you notice any of these signs, it's essential to act quickly to cool your pet down and seek veterinary care immediately.

2. Provide Ample Water and Shade:

Ensure that your pets have access to plenty of fresh water and shaded areas, especially when outdoors. Hydration is

key in preventing heat-related illnesses, so always carry water for your pet during walks or outings.

3. Avoid Peak Heat:

Try to schedule outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening. Asphalt and concrete can become extremely hot and burn your pet's paw pads, so opt for grassy areas whenever possible.

4. Never Leave Pets in Vehicles:

Even with the windows cracked open, the inside of a car can quickly reach dangerous temperatures, posing a significant risk of heat stroke for pets left inside. On hot days, it's best to leave your pet at home rather than taking them along for errands.

5. Limit Exercise Intensity:

While regular exercise is essential

for your pet's health, be mindful of the intensity and duration of outdoor activities during hot weather. Consider shorter walks and opt for indoor play or mental stimulation games instead.

6. Provide Cooling Options:

Offer your pet cooling options such as damp towels, cooling mats, or frozen treats to help them beat the heat. Additionally, consider using fans or air conditioning to keep indoor environments cool and comfortable for your furry friends.

By staying vigilant and taking proactive steps to prevent heat strokes, we can ensure that our pets stay happy, healthy, and safe throughout the summer months. Remember, a little extra care and attention can go a long way in protecting our beloved companions from the dangers of extreme heat.

The borrower pays mortgage points at closing to cover the difference between the standard rate & the lowered rate. Buydowns are most beneficial when a seller or builder offers to pay the discount points on behalf of the buyer without significantly increasing the purchase price of the home. However, if the buyer intends to pay the points themselves, there are certain circumstances in which mortgage buydowns are more suitable. Certain limitations apply, call for details.
