He went on to study at the Scuola Italian Pizzaioli in Venice, collaborating with world Pizza Champion Chef Graziano Bertuzzo. After developing businesses and restaurants in Spain, Italy, and Latin America, Toti, along with his wife Paola and daughters Nicole and Martina, came to the United States in 2016. They opened Pizza Lovers Bistro in Weston with one thought in mind: offer authentic Italian meals with top-quality ingredients at affordable prices. Their original restaurant was so successful that they went on to open another location in Plantation. We sat down with Salvatore to learn more. Tell us about Pizza Lover’s Bistro. T
his year Independence Day was even more significant for the residents of Lauderdale West. The seniors living in the Plantation community have felt isolated during the pandemic especially since all their activities and celebrations were canceled due to COVID-19. Earlier this year, The Lauderdale West board of directors worked with the city and state representatives to set up a “pod” to vaccinate its residents. In February, the community clubhouse was transformed into a vaccination site and fortunately, a large majority of residents were able to receive their shots.
“As soon as people were getting their shots they started asking about July 4th,” said Lauderdale West’s Steve Taylor. “We have a long tradition of celebrating the holidays together here.” So just last month, Taylor was thrilled to organize and announce the highly anticipated annual July 4th luncheon. About 150 residents donned their festive red, white, and blue garb and headed to the community’s main ballroom for a patriotic celebration featuring music, dancing, and plenty of food. Hamburgers and hot dogs with all the trimmings filled their tummies and conversations and laughter with friends and neighbors once again filled their hearts. “I’ve known a lot of these people for years,” added Taylor. “It’s just great to see them out and about again.” As much as the 55+ community was celebrating the nation’s Independence Day, they were celebrating their freedom as well after being in lockdown for so long. No one will take life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for granted.

argie Purtic says that when Guardian ad Litem volunteer Chuck Davidson came to visit the little boy she was fostering, her four biological children would come downstairs, too. “He doesn’t just tend to our little foster guy,” Margie says. “He’s like everyone’s grandpa…I’m sure he’s like this with everyone.” Absolutely he is. Chuck carries a ball in his bag and is always ready to play. He invented the “secret Guardian ad Litem handshake” for a little boy who’d been shaken as a baby and lived in a therapeutic foster home. In his 25 years as a GAL, he’s represented well over 100 abused, abandoned and neglected children in dependency court, specializing in older youths. “I asked for older kids because those are the kids I could do the

ypress Bay Senior Raisa Ali, along with fellow classmates, Valeria Parra Nogueiras and Ashley Valent received Honorable Mention recognition at the Miami Herald’s Silver Knights awards at the end of May. The honorees were selected from more than 619 students representing 65 Miami-Dade schools and 34 Broward schools, both public and private, were nominated by their schools. Raisa was honored for work founding The One World Project. She created the charity at the height of the pandemic. She quickly realized that personal protective equipment (PPE) was in short supply at local hospitals, for first responders, and for frontline workers. Raisa partnered with local Drapery design studio Beautiful Windows to design and manufacture masks to provide to frontline workers. Within weeks of its founding, hospitals across the United States
were asking for masks from One World. This was the start of her project and the start of an entire community, youths, and elders coming together on one important message, giving back to the superheroes of our community that saved lives. As the organization Raisa built grew, she never lost sight of her original purpose, to be the inspiring change for her fellow peers. She wanted to show others her age that they didn't need any big organization to work with nor have a major following to be a part of the change. The One World Project has broadened its focus, beyond just masks, and provided food baskets to poor families adversely affected by COVID-19, and held food distributions/ hygiene kit distributions for the homeless. We can’t wait to hear about Raisa’s incredible contributions to the world when she moves on to college next year.

few years ago during his campaign, Plantation City Councilmember Nick Sortal discovered a major concern for voters was a need for improved schools. His immediate thought was to increase community involvement. After discussing the issue with other city officials fellow councilmember Denise Horland suggested tapping into senior communities to recruit these volunteers. Sortal loved the idea so much that he “borrowed” it from his esteemed colleague. He expressed that the seniors have a do-whatit-takes attitude and his focus has been on placing them at Mirror Lake, Peters, and Plantation Elementary Schools, as well as Plantation Middle School. The determined councilman went over to Five Star Premier Residences in Plantation to explain his mission and recruit his first batch of volunteers for the local public schools. The upscale senior living community graciously welcomed him and was eager to learn more about how they could help. Without hesitation, about a dozen residents signed up right away.
Once the paperwork was in order and background checks complete these ambitious seniors hopped on the center’s bus where they went to Mirror Lake Elementary every Monday until the pandemic hit. At the Plantation school, these big-hearted seniors took on various tasks in their assigned classrooms. Now that the world is adjusting back, they look forward to going back for the 2021-2022 academic year. “I love them,” exclaimed Mirror Lake Principal Marlin Veliz. “And you can tell they love being here! It is evident that the volunteers and the students have bonded.” However, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) still needs more community support. They need a multitude of individuals and now is the time to sign up to volunteer at any school in Broward County. The registration portal is already open for volunteers this fall. The school system conducts a background check and current required health protocols include a face covering. “I don’t want to get in the way of principals planning curriculum and the school board is
the entity in charge of education,” explained Sortal “But, I can certainly use my position as a councilmember to encourage people to develop a sense of community.”

Stroke Myths By Dr. Shaye Moskowitz
Myth 1: There was a warning sign, I was having a stroke. A stroke is the sudden loss of blood supply to a part of the brain. Typically, a clot blocks flow and the brain down stream of that vessel stops working. What we see clinically is what the brain is not able to do. Since this is sudden, they rarely are warning signs to the stroke itself. There are circumstances where mini strokes (TIAs) happen and warn that there may be a bigger future stroke that could happen, but those are exceptions. The best approach is to know what the signs of a stroke are so when it happens, it quickly recognized. Myth 2: I cannot have atrial fibrillation because I don’t feel anything so why do I need a blood thinner? Atrial fibrillation, particularly the kind that comes and goes, increases the risk of having a stroke. In fact, the overall risk is estimated at 5% per year and approximately 5 times the rate of the average population. Blood
thinners are important to reduce that risk. Unfortunately, many people have fibrillation without any sensation that there is a problem, and many people feel their heart racing even when they are not in atrial fibrillation. How someone feels is a poor predictor of whether they have atrial fibrillation and whether they need a blood thinner to reduce their stroke risk. Myth 3: There’s nothing to do about a stroke. Historically, there were few treatment options for stroke and hopeful recovery, rehabilitation and prevention were all the health care field could offer. This could not be further from the truth. Treatment options include medications to dissolve the clot, procedures to physically remove larger blockage or surgeries to address pressure from a brain bleed, and are options for select patients. Of course, recovery, rehabilitation and prevention are still important! Myth 4: An aneurysm is an instant death sentence.
An aneurysm is a weak spot on the wall a blood vessel that is feeding the brain. While the rupture of that aneurysm overall carries high mortality, it is an infrequent event and the risk only accumulates over years. In fact, aneurysms are fairly common and are seen in approximately 5% of the population. The vast majority, however, do nothing. Since some do unfortunately, we have to make decisions individually considering not just the aneurysm but the other risk factors someone might have to justify a repair. Broward Health Medical Center received certification from The Joint Commission as an Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center, reflecting the highest level of expertise for the treatment of serious stroke events. This certification signifies that the hospitals’ stroke program meets rigorous standards for providing care to all stroke patients including endovascular embolization and surgical clipping of brain aneurysms, tPA administration and mechanical endovascular thrombectomy (EVT), a minimally invasive procedure used to remove a blood clot from the brain during an ischemic stroke.

here are angels among us. It may not seem like it. But there are. People with such a strong sense of empathy that they change their lives in service of the less fortunate. Jeanne Albaugh is one of these people. In 2016 Jean and a small group of friends founded Showering Love. Showering Love is a non-profit that provides mobile showers, new undergarments, socks, hygiene kits, and other supportive services for the homeless. The organization provides these services by using a novel idea: a bus named “Grace.”

“Grace” is a 44 foot former Miami City Bus that has been converted into a self-contained mobile shower platform equipped with 2 handicap-accessible private showers and restroom facilities. Showering Love meets Guests where they are, and partners with churches, universities, government agencies, law enforcement, hairstylists & barbers, meal-sharing programs, and other non-profits. Jeanne knows a thing or two about being homeless. She spent ten years on the streets of Broward County without a home. After some unfortunate events in her life, Jeanne went from living on Park Avenue to a park bench. “I scurried around from place to place and slept wherever I could,” said Jeanne, “I begged for money, holding a sign under a bridge. People graciously gave me food and money, but, without a place to shower, my hygiene and personal appearance deteriorated.”
Jeanne took advantage of numerous programs to help the homeless addressed her issues and became self-sufficient. She, however, will never forget those dark desolate nights and decided to dedicate herself to helping homeless people regain their dignity. In addition to personal hygiene, Showering Love offers haircuts, backpacks, wellness checks, hot meals, and non-perishable food. They also connect homeless people with health care programs. Most importantly, Grace provides opportunities for guests and volunteers to break down barriers, and form relationships within the community.

It’s Time to Review Your Estate Plan! By Bruce Iden, Esquire

hings change. Despite all the time and thought that went into creating your will or trust, life happens. Often these changes affect your estate planning. If you don’t regularly review and adjust your plan it may not achieve your desired results when you need it most.
How often should I review my documents?
We recommend reviewing your revocable living trust or will, along with your advance legal (health) directives, at least every three years. This review is especially important if you experienced any major life changes since your documents were executed, including: New family members, or a loss of a loved one Child that has turned 18 or 21 A recently married or divorced beneficiary Beneficiary concerns, such as financial issues, substance abuse problems or disabilities Creation, sale, or closing of a business Purchase of a new or second home, or acquiring an investment property Changes to your beneficiary or successor trustee designations Changes in your relationships with your beneficiaries and/or successor trustees

Can a change in the law affect my documents?
Yes, very definitely. Let’s look at a common estate planning document, a durable power of attorney. Several years ago financial institutions lobbied the Florida legislature to change the applicable law to protect banks and brokerage firms from liability if a durable power of attorney is misused or forged. The new law suggests certain “magic” language which, if included in the durable power of attorney, provides this protection, which makes financial institutions much more likely to honor the document. If your document was drafted before 2011, it won’t contain this magic language. Another change to the law which took effect on October 1, 2015, affects your health care power of attorney. The Florida legislature has revised the law to clarify confusion surrounding when a health care power of attorney becomes effective. Your health care power of attorney can be effective immediately, but only if you so designate. If not, your treating physician must first determine that you are unable to manage your own care before they will take instruction from your designated agent. The new law also offers new choices in terms of designating a health care surrogate for a minor child. Because of this change in the law, there is new language that should be part of your health care power of attorney. If your health care power of attorney was executed before October of 2015, it should be updated.
How do I know if laws have changed that may affect my estate planning documents?
The best way to is to contact your estate planning attorney for a periodic review of your plan. Many attorneys will also affirmatively contact their clients if relevant laws change.
