When you fly now, you know it’s extra for everything — that airfare only pretends to be low.
But when a Senior Community offers luxury living for a seemingly-attractive monthly rent, you don’t expect to be Nickel-and-Dimed.
That’s why you’ll never see Nickel-and-Diming at The Palace. Here your monthly rent covers almost everything. Including all your meals, housekeeping, personal trainers, maintenance, and even Happy Hours with drinks and hors d’oeuvres.
You won’t see a long list of extra charges. At The Palace, the price is the price.
Remember when everything about flying was to make you feel special?
That’s how living at The Palace feels today. Call or visit soon to see for yourself.

A Fresh Start to the New School Year
As summer draws to a close, it’s astonishing how quickly the new school year approaches. This year, Broward County students head back to school earlier than ever, with the first day set for August 12th. As we transition from beach days to school days, it’s time to gather supplies, pick out new lunch boxes, and finish those last-minute summer reading projects. Preparing for school has certainly evolved over the years, becoming more complex with the rise of technology and diverse educational choices.
The era of covering textbooks in brown paper bags is long gone. Today’s students are immersed in a digital world where learning materials are accessed through smartphones, tablets, and Chromebooks. With countless educational apps and online resources, students can explore a wealth of information right at their fingertips.
After-school activities have expanded far beyond traditional sports and music programs. Now, students can delve into coding classes, dual language programs, and much more. Parents, too, have a plethora of educational paths to consider. Alongside conventional public and private schools, options like charter schools, homeschooling, and virtual learning provide families with the flexibility to choose what best fits their needs.
Feeling overwhelmed by back-to-school preparations? Don’t worry—Our City has got you covered. This issue features our extensive Back-to-School Guide, filled with information on the best preschools, private schools, and educational programs in the area. Additionally, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of after-school activities, from arts and crafts to YMCA programs, designed to help you plan a successful school year.
While preparing for the upcoming school year, don’t forget to savor the final weeks of summer. Enjoy the sun, create lasting memories, and embrace the freedom of the season. Soon enough, school will be back in session, and a new chapter of learning and growth will begin.
So, take a moment to relax, enjoy the remaining days of summer, and know that you have everything you need to start the school year off right. Here’s to a fantastic and successful new school year!

Empowering Employees PLANTATION MAYOR CHAMPIONS MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT
By E.F. Israel
Bubbles, mental health tips and even therapy dogs were among the buffet of items Plantation Mayor Nick Sortal arranged as the city marked the first statewide “Hands Across the State” event.
In order to increase the focus on mental health, The Florida League of Mayors asked mayors to arrange a related activity at noon on Friday, July 12.
In Plantation, employees gathered in council chambers to participate in a carefully planned event.
“Mental health is not only a good policy, but it’s also just good business,” Sortal said. “If we can reduce anxiety and depression among our employees, they’re better off and that transfers to the job they do for the city.”
To that end, a year ago Sortal and the Human Resources Department contracted a permanent mental health counselor at the City Hall complex. Employees can arrange for a visit and easily fit it into their schedule.
“People work on their aches and pains,
they take lessons to play sports better, so why shouldn’t we take time to work on our brains?” Sortal said.
Friday’s event was a mix of fun, relaxation and education. Becky Case explained the city’s Employee Assistance Program, a confidential service. Yoga instructor/nutritionist Fabienne Grossman provided small bottles of bubble juice and encouraged guests to attach unwanted thoughts to bubbles they blew and watch them drift away. And the ever-popular therapy dogs and their handlers roamed the council chambers, interacting with attendees.
Rick Braswell, the chaplain for the Plantation Police Department, closed the event with “50 Ways to Take a Break” and a reading about sharing kindness by Nikkia Banas of TheMindsJournal.
It included:
“You never know how much someone needed that long hug or deep talk. So don’t wait to be kind.”
“I applaud the League of Mayors for coming up with this idea,” Sortal said. “And we jumped all-in with both feet.”

It's important to take care of yourself during this emotional time. Here's a checklist of crucial details to help you handle the “business” end of things and make the trip to an attorney’s office easier. Some of these tasks have deadlines, so reach out sooner rather than later.
Immediate Actions

• Notify Social Security: Inform them about the death immediately to avoid overpayments and legal issues.

• Cancel Identifications: Cancel the deceased's driver's license, passport, voter's registration, and club memberships.
• Close Online Accounts: Close email and social media accounts. Shut down any websites.
• Contact Your CPA.
What NOT To Do After a Loved One Dies
Handling the estate improperly can lead to significant problems. Here are things you should avoid and should consult with an attorney before handling any of the items below:
1. Do Not Tell the Bank Right Away or Close Accounts Prematurely: Wait until you understand the estate fully.
2. Do Not Notify Utility Companies: Avoid having services shut off;
3. Do Not Give Away or Promise Items or Sell Personal Assets
4. Do Not Drive Their Vehicles: Insurance may not cover you after their death.
5. Do Not Let Others Move Into Their House.
6. Do Not Let Homeowner’s Insurance Lapse: Ensure the house remains insured.
7. Do Not Neglect Digital Assets: Manage online accounts, social media profiles, and digital currencies.
8. Do Not Forget to Notify Creditors: Prevent further charges by informing creditors of the death.
9. Do Not Overlook Pets: Ensure pets are cared for according to the estate plan.
10. Do Not Neglect Filing for Life Insurance or Death Benefits: File for any life insurance or death benefits.
11. Do Not Forget About Personal Notifications: Notify friends, family, and acquaintances about the death.
Preparing for Probate
Depending on the circumstances, probate may be necessary. Gather the following: Will and Trust: Ensure you have the original or a good copy.
List of Bills and Debts: Compile all outstanding bills and debts. Professional Advisors: List financial advisors, insurance agents, and other professional advisors.
Surviving Family Members: Create a list of family members with their contact information. My final “DO NOT”
Do Not Delay Handling Things: Consult an attorney within 1-2 months to develop a plan. Gather important documents like estate plans, life insurance, bank statements, and bills. A qualified attorney will help you manage the estate efficiently, saving you time, money, and stress. As always, my firm and I are here to help you through this difficult time.

How Martial Arts Can Be AN EXCITING ALTERNATIVE TO THE GYM
By John Wai
Looking for a fun and engaging way to stay fit? Martial arts might be the perfect alternative to the traditional gym workout. While gyms offer a familiar routine with treadmills, weights, and machines, martial arts provide a dynamic and interactive approach to fitness.
One of the standout benefits of martial arts is the personalized attention from experienced professionals. In a martial arts academy, instructors are not just coaches; they are mentors dedicated to your growth. This personalized approach ensures that techniques are learned correctly and safely, which can sometimes be lacking in a crowded gym environment.
Martial arts also foster a unique culture and community. Unlike the individual-focused environment of a gym, martial arts academies promote camaraderie and mutual respect. Training with others who share your goals creates a supportive network, making the journey more enjoyable and motivating. This sense of belonging can
significantly enhance your commitment to your fitness goals.
Additionally, martial arts offer the invaluable skill of self-defense. While gyms focus on physical fitness, martial arts training equips you with techniques that could one day protect you or your loved ones. This practical knowledge adds a layer of confidence and security that goes beyond physical appearance.
Another advantage of martial arts is the holistic workout it provides. Movements in disciplines like Muay Thai, Brazilian JiuJitsu, and MMA engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously, improving strength, flexibility, and endurance all at once. This full-body workout can often lead to faster and more balanced fitness results compared to traditional gym routines.
In conclusion, while the gym is an excellent place to achieve fitness goals, martial arts offer a refreshing and enriching alternative. With personalized instruction, a
supportive community, self-defense skills, and comprehensive workouts, martial arts can turn your fitness journey into an exciting adventure. So, if you're seeking something new and invigorating, consider stepping onto the mats—you might just find your passion there.

Understanding the Risks
Florida's hurricane season, spanning from June to November, brings potential dangers such as strong winds, flooding, and power outages. These conditions can be stressful and hazardous for pets too. Planning ahead is key to minimizing risks.
Creating an Emergency Plan
Start by developing a pet-specific emergency plan:
• Identify evacuation routes and nearby pet-friendly shelters.
• Keep a list of hotels that accept pets in case of evacuation.
• Ensure all family members know their roles and responsibilities.
Assembling a Pet Emergency Kit
Prepare a pet emergency kit well in advance, include:
• At least one week's supply of food and water.
• Medications and medical records in a waterproof container.
• Comfort items such as blankets, toys, and a familiar bed.
• Litter, litter box, and plastic bags for waste disposal. Store your kit in a designated place that is easily accessible during emergencies.
Ensuring Identification & Records
Make sure your pet can be easily identified:
• Ensure your pet’s microchip information is up-to-date.
• Attach a secure collar with identification tags including your current contact information.
• Keep physical and digital copies of medical records, vaccinations, and a recent photo of your pet.
Preparing for Evacuation
If evacuation becomes necessary:
• Have a sturdy carrier or crate for each pet.
• Keep leashes, harnesses, and any necessary medications readily available.
• Plan transportation ahead of time, considering your pet's comfort and safety.
Securing Your Home
Before a hurricane hits:
• Bring outdoor pets indoors to keep them safe from flying debris.
• Close windows and curtains, and secure any loose objects that could become projectiles.
• Ensure your pet has a safe space within your home.
Post-Hurricane Safety
After the storm passes:
• Assess your home and surroundings for safety hazards before allowing pets outside.
• Look out for signs of stress or injury in your pets and seek veterinary care if needed.
• Maintain a routine as much as possible to help your pets feel secure.

“Goose”
Goosie Boy is one year old and the most gentle, sweet pup. He loves digging in the yard and stealing Daddy's things! He runs like a gazelle and even opens the zipper to the trampoline to enjoy a good jump. He's a lizard chaser but gets scared when they chase him back. He adores children of all ages and gets along well with other dogs. Goosie Boy loves swimming in our pond— we can hardly keep him out of it! With a name like Silly Goose, he's truly completed our little family. We hope you feature him in Plantation Magazine so we can share our MVP with everyone!
