Celebrate Local Culture
Ponce de Leon, the famed explorer, laid claim to Florida for Spain when he discovered it in 1513. Even after five centuries, Florida continues to be a home for settlers from Spanish-speaking nations. Broward County’s population is nearly 30% Hispanic, and in Miami Dade, the figure rises to almost 70%. This significant Hispanic presence lends a special resonance to National Hispanic Heritage Month in South Florida.
Observed from September 15th to October 15th, is a festive occasion that honors the history, culture, and contributions of American citizens with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The month is filled with various events and celebrations, such as the Festival de la Salsa 3 at Miramar Regional Park on September 9th, and the Hispanic Heritage Month Festival at the Pembroke Pines Branch Library on October 6th. These events will feature food, music, crafts, and storytelling, reflecting the rich cultural heritage.
For those looking to immerse themselves in the local culture, Our City magazine’s calendar section is an invaluable resource. Each month, the magazine includes a handpicked list of diverse community activities and events that cater to a broad spectrum of tastes and interests. By engaging with these events, you can truly experience the unique cultural offerings of the region.

SHOEBOXES OF HOPE:
South Florida’s Back-to-School Mission for the World
As the school year approaches, shoebox packers are making use of backto-school prices to purchase gifts and essential items for children in need around the world. Residents in Weston are collecting school supplies, along with personal care items and fun toys, to pack in shoeboxes. Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, will deliver these gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 100 countries.
For many children, access to these simple items is essential to an education. This was the case for Justin Thomas, a shoebox recipient in Southeast Asia whose parents could not afford the supplies needed for school. Thomas remembers the specific day he received a gift-filled shoebox from Operation Christmas Child and found it filled with toys and most exciting to him—school supplies!
Growing up with hand-me-down clothes and used items, Thomas used to write with a pencil so short that he held it using a pen cap. Having an entire packet of new pencils and a pencil sharpener all his own was a treasure to him. This simple gift made a life-changing impact for Thomas because it opened the doors for him to receive an education.
For more information, visit samaritanspurse.org/occ. National Collection Week is Nov. 13-20. Participants can donate $10 per shoebox gift online through “Follow Your Box” and receive a tracking label to discover its destination. Those who prefer the convenience of online shopping can browse samaritanspurse.org/buildonline to select gifts matched to a child’s specific age and gender, then finish packing the virtual shoebox by adding a photo and personal note of encouragement.
Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan's Purse, seeks to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to children in need around the world and, together with the local church worldwide, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has collected and delivered more than 209 million giftfilled shoeboxes to children in more than 170 countries and territories. This year, Operation Christmas Child will celebrate its 30th year of ministry!

Our City Plantation / September 2023 / OurCityMedia.com / 15 ■ FEATURE STORY
The Plantation Police Department collaborated with the Broward Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Customs and Border Protection for the annual National Night Out event. This campaign aims to foster stronger police-community partnerships and promote a sense of camaraderie within neighborhoods, ultimately creating safer and more supportive living environments.
National Night Out plays a pivotal role in enhancing the rapport between residents and law enforcement, rekindling a genuine community spirit. Additionally, it presents a valuable occasion for bringing together police officers and community members in positive settings.
Scheduled on the first Tuesday of August each year, National Night Out encountered unfavorable weather conditions this year. Nevertheless, the event featured a variety of attractions, including food, games, music, and activities suitable for all age groups.
The Plantation Police Department went the extra mile by arranging a booth and showcasing their patrol vehicles. This served as an excellent chance for locals to become acquainted with one another and gain insights into their local law enforcement agencies. An exciting highlight of the event was a helicopter fast-roping demonstration by the Customs and Border Protection team.
National Night Out offers an exceptional platform to connect with neighbors and expand knowledge about local law enforcement. Moreover, it provides an opportunity to partake in enjoyable festivities and commemorate the sense of community that thrives in your vicinity.

Advances Fuel Hope in Treating Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer was once a leading cause of cancer death for women in the United States, but that picture has shifted, with statistics reflecting a 33 percent decrease in deaths over the past three decades.
“Cervical cancer is preventable. It’s one of the few cancers we can eradicate,” says Dr. Diaz, who also heads the gynecological cancer team at the Baptist Health’s wellness and medical complex in Plantation. “With the screening programs available to women today — utilizing Pap smears and the human papillomavirus (HPV) test, in combination with the HPV vaccine — we should be able to completely eliminate this disease in the United States.”
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some 14,000 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer this year, and about 4,000 will die from the disease.
HPV is estimated to cause 93 percent of cervical cancers in the U.S. The HPV vaccine that was introduced in 2006 has helped reduce early-stage cervical cancer among younger women, he says, but middle-aged and older people who were never vaccinated are still at risk, Dr. Diaz says. Although it is most often diagnosed in women aged 35-44, more than 20 percent of cases occur in women over 65, according to the American Cancer Society. The prognosis has improved with such breakthroughs as robotic-assisted surgery with tumor containment, brachytherapy with implanted radioactive “seeds,” and immunotherapy for patients with recurrent disease to help their bodies outsmart cancer. John Paul Diaz, M.D., chief of gynecologic oncology at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute, has been involved — and continues to lead — clinical trials that push the boundaries of cancer care.
...a 33 percent decrease in deaths over the past three decades.
18 / Our City Plantation / September 2023 / OurCityMedia.com
John Paul Diaz, M.D.
While the decline in early-stage cervical cancer is good news, there has been an alarming spike in advanced, or metastatic, diagnoses in recent years. “Most cases of advanced cervical cancer are seen in patients who haven’t had a Pap smear for five years or more,” Dr. Diaz says. Because cervical cancer has few warning signs, regular checkups and screenings are important.
When detected early, cervical cancer is typically curable. Treatment options include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and immunotherapy, based on the kind of cancer, the patient’s age and how far it has spread.
As the only Florida partner of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Alliance, Miami Cancer Institute can provide access to clinical trials not widely available. Dr. Diaz is leading a number of studies, including one sponsored by the state of Florida to explore the efficacy of combining chemotherapy and immunotherapy to boost the body’s ability to fight recurrent cervical cancer cells. “We’ve had really encouraging results, and now we’re trying to see if we can make those results even better,” he says.
At an international meeting of surgeons, Dr. Diaz recently presented a modified surgical technique that better contains early-stage cervical cancer during minimally invasive robotic surgery. Miami Cancer Institute also is participating in a clinical trial comparing survival rates for patients who undergo robotic-assisted surgery versus open radical
hysterectomy for early-stage cervical cancer. Robotic-assisted procedures require only a few small incisions through which instruments and tiny cameras are inserted into the body. These procedures can lead to less pain, a quicker recovery and lower risk of infection.
The same groundbreaking care at Miami Cancer Institute’s main location is available at the medical complex in Plantation, Dr. Diaz notes. “Everything’s under one roof at the Plantation office from a gynecological cancer care perspective,” he says. “Patients can go there for their chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. We offer a multidisciplinary, coordinated treatment approach, all in one facility.”
At the same time, prevention is certainly a better alternative to a cure, says Alessandro Villa, DDS, Ph.D., chief of oral oncology and dentistry at Miami Cancer Institute. Dr. Villa runs a regular clinic at Baptist Health’s location in Plantation.
“The vaccine is an important cancer prevention tool. The push is to get this vaccine – the earlier the better – because adolescence is when we have the best antibody response,” Dr. Villa says. “But there’s still value for adults. That’s why the CDC encourages people to get the vaccine up to the age of 26, or even up to the age of 45 for some people.”
Progress in the prevention, detection and treatment of cancer makes this a hopeful time, Dr. Diaz says. “I look forward to a day when we can eradicate women’s cancers once and for all.”

DEDICATE SEPTEMBER TO REFLECTION AND RAISING AWARENESS OF SUICIDE PREVENTION
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and September 10 – 16, 2023 is National Suicide Prevention Week. Did you know… Suicide ranks as the 10th leading cause of death and is the second leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults aged 15-24. This is all in the face of increased attempts to die by suicide, incidents of self-harm, and increased levels of depression and anxiety. The impact of a death by suicide affects more than the individual who tragically dies including the family, friends, and even the first responders who respond to these calls.
When a person is experiencing challenges to their mental health, it is important they have the help, resources, and support necessary to guide them through. Please take a moment to reflect and know the warning signs of suicide. These signs include feelings of despair, hopelessness, loss of interest in things that used to give them joy, excessive drug/alcohol use, becomes withdrawn or isolates themselves, or recently experienced or sustained traumatic life events. The best way to find out if someone is experiencing suicidal thoughts is to ask them directly.
Mental health challenges can affect a person’s moods, behaviors, and even their cognitive functioning. The norm in some cultures may be to avoid talking about problems, feelings, or mental health concerns. While some individuals can have healthy coping mechanisms, many people often struggle to find proactive methods for their emotional turmoil or unresolved trauma. For any stressful situation, talk about the feelings you have, provide an open dialogue, and promote the fact that it is OK to talk about feelings of stress, isolation, and anxiety.
Help is here! United Way of Broward County partnered with the Broward Behavioral Health Coalition, and the Department of Children and Families to prioritize mental health struggles in its county-wide “It’s OK to not be OK” initiative and the 9-8-8 hotline. The goal
is to provide an outlet of support to the community facing challenges with mental health, or any feelings of stress, isolation, and anxiety.
Call the 9-8-8 hotline for support! Trained counselors provide each caller with guidance and free resources that will help in most situations.

Kicks, Bonds, and Legacy: THE LONG FAMILY'S MARTIAL ARTS JOURNEY
In our beautiful city of Plantation, the Long family has spent the past 12 years training together at the renowned John Wai Martial Arts Academy. Through their shared dedication to martial arts, they have not only forged stronger bonds but also cultivated discipline and skills that transcend generations.
The Long family's martial arts journey started with their children, Hunter and Coco, enrolling in John Wai’s Kids Martial Arts program. Witnessing their enthusiasm and dedication, Scott and Maureen Long decided to join their children on this transformative path. Little did they know that it would become an integral part of their lives.
At John Wai Martial Arts, the Longs have immersed themselves in various disciplines. Scott, Hunter, and Coco have dedicated themselves to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Kung Fu, and MMA, while Maureen has developed a passion for kickboxing.
Hunter and Coco have blossomed into
exceptional martial artists, going beyond mere training. They have become vital members of the academy's professional demo team and competition squad. Furthermore, their skills have led them to assist in instructing the kids' martial arts program and summer camp, inspiring and guiding the next generation of martial artists.
Scott Long initially stood on the sidelines, coaching his kids as they trained in class. However, a pivotal moment occurred when the head instructor, John Wai, urged Scott to experience the challenges firsthand. Intrigued, Scott joined a Jiu-Jitsu class and found himself captivated by the art. Since that day, he has dedicated himself to training and currently holds a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
The Long family's story epitomizes the transformative power of martial arts, fostering unity, discipline, and personal growth. Through their shared commitment, the Longs
have not only strengthened their familial bonds but also become integral parts of the John Wai Martial Arts community. As they continue to train, compete, and inspire others, the Long family exemplifies the resilience and excellence that martial arts instills. Their journey serves as a testament that martial arts is more than just a pastime—it is a way of life.

HOW TO SECURE THE WELLBEING OF OUR CHILDREN
By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.
Raising our children continues after the first 18 years! We want to ensure our values are instilled in them for their entire lives. Establishing an estate plan becomes of paramount importance when minor children or grandchildren are involved. While finding the time during our busy lives may be challenging, having a well-thought-out and carefully drafted plan is essential! Trusts offer a unique opportunity to leave a lasting impact on our children's lives. Here are three types of trusts designed to address different goals and priorities for safeguarding the future of minor children and grandchildren.
1. Education and Health Exclusion Trust:
Education is a crucial stepping stone to our children's success, and some funds stored away in a trust can make a significant difference. Grandparents can set aside funds specifically designated for their grandchildren's educational and healthcare needs.
According to the US Treasury Regulations, a trust can pay for tuition costs for a formal educational institution. Grandparents can avoid quite a bit of tax liability on funds transferred to the trust. Further, gift tax liability can be avoided on funds disbursed as qualified transfers directly to the educational institution or medical provider.
As a parent to two young adults, I can attest that a "529 Plan" also has distinct advantages for a parent to help with educational costs. A 529 plan is a tax-advantaged savings plan and comes in two types: prepaid tuition plans and education savings plans.
2. Incentive Trusts:
How likely are children to do the dishes, walk the dog, clean their room, or offer to cook dinner? How much does the likelihood increase when they are offered money to complete these tasks? Most parents would agree that incentivizing young children works like magic. How surprised would you be to learn that even if you are not around, you can continue to guide and motivate your children by incentivizing them from beyond the grave?
Incentive trusts provide parents with the flexibility to set goals and appropriate rewards through distributions once a child reaches the goal. Parents can set multiple and separate goals for each child.
There are a variety of goals that can be addressed with incentive trusts, such as higher education, receiving good grades, starting a business, and maintaining a paying job. As you can imagine, these goals are best defined by you; who knows your children's abilities and limitations.
3. Beneficiary-Controlled Trust:
A beneficiary-controlled trust offers an appealing option for those who believe their children are financially responsible and exercise good judgment. This trust structure minimizes the risks associated with outside control while allowing your children to have some influence over their inheritance.
The advantage of a beneficiary-controlled trust is that it grants the beneficiary significant control over their inheritance while still imposing certain restrictions on its usage with distributions based on a standard, such as health, education, maintenance, and support (HEMS). This safeguard prevents most creditors from reaching the beneficiary's interest in the trust. However, once a distribution is made, it becomes susceptible to the beneficiary's creditors.
When planning for the future of your family, it is essential to work with a qualified estate planning professional. They can analyze your unique situation, discuss your goals thoroughly, and craft a comprehensive plan that safeguards the future of both you and your loved ones.

CATS 101: A GUIDE FOR FIRST-TIME CAT OWNERS
By Dr. Jennifer Frione
Are you entering yo ur cat era?
Purr-ific! We know cats make wonderful companions and bring years of joy and love into our lives. However, before you bring your new furry friend home, it's important to learn a bit about the basics of cat care. Here are some tips to help you get started:
Choose the Right Cat for Your Lifestyle
There are so many different breeds of cats, and each one has their own unique personality. Some cats are more active and playful, while others are more laid-back and cuddly. It's important to choose a cat that will be a good fit for your lifestyle.
If you’re out of your home a lot, you might want to choose a cat that is content with spending time alone. If you’re a homebody, you might want to choose a cat that is more active and playful.
It's also important to consider your home environment. If you have a small apartment, you might want to choose a smaller cat breed. If you have children, you should likely choose a cat that is known for being patient and gentle with children.
Set Up a Safe and Comfortable Home For Your Cat
Once you have chosen your cat, you need to set up a safe and comfortable home for them. This includes providing them with a litter box, food and water bowls, a bed and plenty of toys and scratching posts.
You should also make sure your home is cat-proof. This means removing any potential hazards, such as poisonous plants, sharp objects and small objects that your cat could choke on.
Feed Your Cat a Healthy Diet
Cats are obligate carnivores, which means they need to eat meat to survive. A healthy cat diet should consist of high-quality cat food that is specifically formulated for your cat's age and activity level.
You should also avoid giving your cat table scraps, as these can be unhealthy for them. If you are unsure about what to feed your cat, you should talk to your veterinarian.
Groom Your Cat Regularly
A cat's coat health is important to ensure they are free of mats and potential skin irritations. The frequency of brushing or potentially grooming your cat will depend on its breed and coat type.
Short-haired cats may only need to be brushed a few times a week, while long-haired cats may need to be brushed daily. You should also trim your cat's nails regularly to prevent them from becoming too long.
Take Your Cat to the Vet for Regular Checkups
Just like humans, cats need to see the veterinarian for regular checkups. This is important to ensure that your cat is healthy and to catch any potential problems early on. Your veterinarian can also provide you with advice on cat care and answer any questions you may have.
Don’t Forget To Have Fun!
Cats need to play regularly to stay healthy and happy. Playing helps keep your cat's mind and body active. You can use toys or laser pointers but just yourself will do too! The most important thing is to find
activities that your cat enjoys. Have fun with your furry companion!
Be Patient and Loving
Cats are independent creatures, but they also need love and attention. Be patient with your cat as they adjust to their new home. Spend time with them, play with them and give them lots of love.
With a little patience and love, you and your cat will be best friends in no time!
Here are some additional tips for first time cat owners:
• Start training your cat early. This will help them learn good behavior and avoid bad habits.
• If you have other pets, introduce them to your cat slowly and carefully. This will help to prevent any problems.
• Be aware of your cat's body language. This will help you to understand how they are feeling.
• If you are ever unsure about something, talk to your veterinarian. They will be able to provide you with expert advice. Caring for a cat can be a lot of work, but it is also very rewarding. With a little bit of effort, you can provide your cat with a happy and healthy home!

By Nick Sortal
Kobs Green Market, an organic grocery store, has opened at Plantation Walk. Kobs brings a redefined corner-store concept to this mixed-use development. Many of the items have a Whole Foods-like feel. Among the most popular items is an organic vegetarian pizza fresh in a box to be cooked at home.
Meanwhile, the City Council on July 19 approved small sign changes for Crack’d Kitchen and Coffee. The breakfast specialty restaurant plans to be open by the time of this magazine’s publication.
Amazon Fresh halted: In 2022, the city approved an Amazon Fresh store in the space formerly occupied by H.H. Gregg, located at the southeast corner of Sunrise Boulevard and Flamingo Road. But it won’t be opening anytime soon, if at all. Amazon Fresh is the subject of a lawsuit filed by the store’s landlord seeking unpaid rent. Flamingo Plaza, which owns the property at 12300 W. Sunrise Blvd., says Amazon hasn’t been paying its rent. Amazon officials said they will “temporarily halt” expansions because of the business climate.
No change at the Seritage site: A recent executive order in Tallahassee means the unfinished building at the north side of Broward Mall may remain up even longer. Nationally, Seritage, the failed development endeavor at the former Sears site, is selling off all 250 of its properties. The city spoke on April 21 to Seritage representatives and, while no official commitment was made, we all agreed the right play is to knock down the half-built facility that Seritage had started. (Any new buyer is going to start over again anyway.)
Technically the permit for the site is still active. The governor issued an executive order after Tropical Storm Nicole struck, extending the timeframe for existing development permits. He has repeatedly issued 90-day extensions, most recently on June 29.
Bond Update: Most of the projects have been completed as part of the $59 million bond that voters approved in 2016, but a few are not. The expansion of Fire Station No. 2 with an additional bay will be forthcoming from the public safety silo. North Acres Park, enhancements at Pop Travers Park (restroom), Pine Island Park (storage), and the renovation of the Central Park Multipurpose Building are also planned.
Flooding on Cleary Boulevard: Many of you have noticed flooding on Cleary Boulevard just east of Pine Island Road, where Shalimar, a new housing project, is being built. It is replacing the prior occupant, American Express. We're fixing it.
There’s no drainage infrastructure on the south side of Cleary Boulevard between Pine Island Road and Northwest 82nd Avenue. Construction impacted the swale, which ruined what drainage we had. The developer will rebuild and regrade the swale, which will provide some retention. Small ponds just off the road are expected. The city is adding drainage facilities as a long-term solution.
Personal note: The “Best in Broward” awards were presented at an Aug. 5 dinner, and I am proud to share that I was chosen “Best Elected Official at the Local Level.” State Rep. Marie Woodson was selected “Best State Elected Official” and Property Appraiser Marty Kiar and County Commissioner Beam Furr shared “Best County Elected Official.” I love doing this job and I love Plantation, but, like everyone, it’s always nice to be recognized.

Student Leaders also traveled to Washington D.C. for a week-long, all expenses paid, national leadership summit focused on the power of cross-sector collaboration and community advocacy.
The Student Leaders program recognizes 300 community-focused juniors and seniors from across the U.S. annually. The Broward County-based Student Leaders are participating in programming that includes a collaborative, mentor-focused project with the YMCA of South Florida.

favorite activity is sitting by the back door and scouting out every Squirrel that passes by! She is so smart, we often say she went to “Doggy Harvard.” Her favorite trick is “hit the cup” and she will do anything for a “bye bye” (car ride). She enjoys dressing up and painting her nails pink. Shes a world traveler and has even visited exotic places like Niagara Falls, the movie theater, many restaurants and a Broadway Musical!—Mimi is simply the best!
