Adopt a Pet Transform Their Life & Yours
Owning a pet can bring a wealth of benefits to your life, both physically and mentally. Research consistently shows that pet ownership can improve cardiovascular health, particularly of dogs and cats. Pet owners often have lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, reducing heart disease risk. Studies have also highlighted that dog owners tend to live longer after a heart attack than those without pets.
Beyond physical health, pets play a vital role in mental well-being. The companionship they offer helps alleviate feelings of loneliness and anxiety. Simply petting a dog or cat can trigger the release of endorphins, lifting your mood and reducing stress. This is especially important for older adults, as pets can provide a sense of purpose and structure, helping maintain cognitive function and mental sharpness.
Pets are also catalysts for a more active lifestyle. Dog owners, in particular, tend to lead more active lives through regular walks and playtime, which in turn contributes to better overall health. For children, growing up with pets has been linked to stronger immune systems and a reduced risk of developing allergies, owing to early exposure to a variety of microbes.
However, despite these numerous benefits, many animals still need a loving home. In the United States alone, an estimated 670,000 dogs are euthanized each year due to overcrowded shelters. Globally, millions of pets face similar fates.
Adopting a pet is not just a life-changing decision for you, but also a life-saving one for them. By opening your home to a pet, you’re not only gaining a loyal companion but also giving an animal the chance for a happy, fulfilling life. Consider adoption today—for their sake, and for yours. PLANTATION PD RELEASES 2023 ANNUAL REPORT
The Plantation Police Department released its 2023 Annual Report last month. The report highlights the department's efforts in crime reduction and community engagement. It provides a comprehensive overview of the department's activities, focusing on crime trends, community outreach programs, and improvements in policing strategies and technologies.
Crime Trends
Over the last decade, the City of Plantation has seen significant fluctuations in crime rates, with a general trend towards stabilization in recent years. The report details crime statistics across various categories, including homicide, robbery, aggravated assault, sex offenses, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft.
Homicide: The number of homicides has remained relatively low and stable, with only slight variations. The city recorded three homicides in both 2020 and 2023, which is consistent with the low homicide rates seen throughout the decade. Robbery and Aggravated Assault: These categories saw a marked decrease over the years. Robberies declined from a high of 117 in 2015 to 62 in both 2022 and 2023. Similarly, aggravated assaults fluctuated, with a peak in 2021 (125 incidents), but showed a slight decrease in 2023 with 114 incidents.
Property Crimes: There was a noticeable reduction in property crimes, particularly in burglary and larceny. For example, burglaries decreased significantly from 1,734 in 2016 to 630 in 2023. Larceny, however, displayed a more complex pattern, with a decline in the mid-2010s, followed by an increase, peaking at 1,504 incidents in 2023.
Motor Vehicle Theft: This crime category has shown relative stability, with some annual fluctuations. In 2023, the number of motor vehicle thefts stood at 258, reflecting a slight increase compared to previous years.
Overall, the total number of reported crimes has seen a general decline from the early 2010s, with a total of 2,582 reported crimes in 2023, down from a peak of 3,443 in 2015. This trend suggests a positive impact of the department's crime reduction strategies.
Community Engagement
The Plantation Police Department has placed significant emphasis on community engagement as a core aspect of its policing strategy. The Community Engagement Unit (CEU) played a vital role in fostering relationships between the police and the community, participating in a wide range of events and programs aimed at enhancing trust and cooperation.
National Night Out: This annual event continued to be a major success, drawing over 2,000 attendees in 2023. The event featured numerous activities, including vendor booths, live music, and demonstrations by the police and other first responders. It served as a key platform for strengthening community ties.
Citizens Police Academy: The department’s Citizens Police Academy is a ten-week program designed to educate residents about police operations. This initiative has been instrumental in promoting understanding and collaboration between the police force and the community.
SALT
(Seniors and Law Enforcement Together): This program focused on building relationships with the senior population, offering monthly meetings where safety presentations and other relevant topics were discussed.
Other Community Programs: The CEU also engaged in various charitable activities, such as the Thanksgiving Meal Giveaway and the Santa Run, which not only provided assistance to those in need but also helped humanize the police force in the eyes of the community. In recognition of its efforts, the CEU was awarded the Crime Prevention Unit of the Year by the Southeast Florida Crime Prevention Association and received a National Night Out award, placing in the top 20 for cities of similar size.
The Plantation Police Department's 2023 Annual Report reflects concerted efforts to reduce crime and enhance community relations. While the city has experienced fluctuations in crime rates, the overall trend points to a safer community, supported by proactive policing and robust community engagement initiatives. The department's ongoing commitment to improving its relationship with the community through various outreach programs has been instrumental in building trust and fostering a collaborative environment, which is essential for effective policing.

SURVEY RESULTS Numbers Show Residents are Pleased
By Mayor Nick Sortal
If you’ve eaten at any restaurant recently or made a doctor’s visit, you often receive a follow-up questionnaire, asking, basically, “How are we doing?”
The city of Plantation recently asked an independent company to do the same for city services. We wanted to know what you like, how we compare with other cities and what we can do better.
I can easily say we are all very happy with the responses.
People love living here and they may never move. They like that our city is kept clean and neat. They love our parks, our police, fire departments and more. They worry about traffic and development.
ETC Institute surveyed 659 residents via mail and digital platforms and made sure all ages, races and portions of the city were fairly represented.
Here are the highlights:
The 49 questions were “benchmarked” against the averages of other municipalities nationwide, then also against those in Florida only. We beat the norm in 47 categories against municipalities, 48 against cities in our state.
We confirmed the hypothesis that people who live here stay here; 47 percent reported being Plantation residents for at least 21 years.
We like it here: 92 percent rate Plantation as an “excellent” or “good” place to live. That beats the national average by 40 points.
We also scored high on image: 86 percent say they are either “very satisfied” or “satisfied” with the quality of life in our city; 87 percent for the same categories on “overall appearance,” 82 percent on “overall image,” and
82 percent on “overall quality” of their neighborhood.
Satisfaction with police, fire and emergency services response times was over 80 percent in each category, running about 20 percent higher than national averages.
Residents appreciate that trees are trimmed and grass is mowed (82 percent), public buildings are maintained (82
percent), street signs and traffic signals (78 percent) and streets and public areas (76 percent).
Overall satisfaction with city parks scored 91 percent, with playgrounds, athletic fields and special events all at approval ratings of 85 percent or higher.
We will be using this data to make the best decisions possible as we govern. To see the entire survey, go to Plantation.org.
Perceptions of the City: Benchmarking
• Plantation rated higher than the regional and national average in almost all service areas that were assessed.
• Plantation is not alone in that managing growth is an area of concern among residents as communities nation wide are struggling in this area as well.

Broward County has reached a remarkable milestone, earning an "A" school rating—a clear reflection of the collective efforts of the entire community. This success underscores the county’s dedication to education and promises a brighter future for its residents, with enhanced real estate values and a robust local economy.
The leadership of the recently retired Superintendent Dr. Peter Licata was pivotal in achieving this success. Together with Deputy Superintendent Hepburn, now the new superintendent, they laid the groundwork for an environment where both students and educators could excel
School Rating Success
through their strategic vision and hard work.
In light of this accomplishment, Mr. Hepburn, now the Superintendent, praised the unwavering commitment of the dedicated staff who made this achievement possible. “This is a proud moment for all of us,” Hepburn remarked.
“Amazing work by our staff, amazing work by our teachers, our principals, our custodians, our bus drivers, our cafeteria workers, our clerical staff. I can go on and on and on,” he said.
He also thanked the nearly 260,000 students who attend the district’s
public schools every day.
“Thanks to our students and our families. They really took charge of their kids’ education. Our students took charge of their own education,” said Hepburn.
Hepburn also highlighted the broader implications of this achievement, particularly its impact on the community at large. He pointed out that a high-performing school district significantly boosts real estate values and attracts families seeking quality education and a vibrant community.
“This 'A' rating enhances Broward County’s appeal as a destination for families looking for a great place to raise their children. It’s a
testament to our collective efforts and a foundation for future growth,” Hepburn noted.
Broward County’s success story is one of community collaboration, where teachers, parents, and local leaders unite to prioritize education. This joint effort has positioned the county as a leader in educational excellence, setting a benchmark for other districts.
As Broward County basks in this achievement, the community looks forward to continued progress under Hepburn’s leadership, ensuring that the county remains a great place to live, learn, and grow.

METAL DETECTORS ROLLED OUT AT BCPS HIGH SCHOOLS
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) experienced some growing pains after metal detectors were installed at BCPS high schools for the 2024 school year. Students and visitors entering BCPS high schools must pass through metal detectors monitored by security personnel and school staff. The program's launch on the first day of school led to TSA-like lines and anxious teens. Reports from local schools suggest some of the challenges have been mitigated.
The metal detector initiative is part of a broader system-wide security initiative implemented by the county’s revamped school board.
School Entry Process
Students can carry their backpacks or bags and will not need to empty pockets or remove shoes, cellphones, keys, metal on clothes, or belts, as those items will not alert the system. Some items will result in an alert and must be placed on adjacent tables to be screened by security staff. These include laptops, large eyeglass cases, musical instruments, umbrellas, and 3-ring binders. Once students are cleared for entry, these items can
be collected.
Students who alert the system when passing through the metal detectors will be screened separately. School staff will be available to support them during this process. Special accommodations will be available for students with disabilities. Parents and guardians should contact the school’s administration for details.
Questionable Impact on Safety
Research on the use of metal detectors in U.S. high schools reveals mixed findings regarding their effectiveness and impact on school safety and student well-being.
Metal detectors can indeed help confiscate weapons, thereby potentially reducing the immediate risk of violence. For instance, in New York City schools, a significant number of weapons, including firearms, stun guns, and knives , have been confiscated using metal detectors. However, according to a RAND Corporation analysis, metal detectors alone do not guarantee reduced violence or threats
The implementation of metal detectors can affect students' perceptions of safety. Some studies indicate that
metal detectors might contribute to a heightened sense of fear and a feeling of being criminalized among students. This is particularly pronounced in urban schools, although the negative impact on students' sense of safety is somewhat less than in suburban or rural schools (IES.gov)
A study from the Education Trust suggests constant exposure to security measures like metal detectors may contribute to an environment of distrust and anxiety. This can potentially undermine the relationship between students and school staff, negatively impacting the overall school climate.
The Education Trust argues that resources might be better allocated towards other safety measures and supportive services that foster a positive school environment. These include improved mental health services, equitable discipline policies, and enhanced teacher-student relationships.

PLANTATION UPDATE
By Nick Sortal
School has begun and our city is bustling. Here are some updates: Plantation School Progress: The State’s annual list of school grades came out and there’s good news for Plantation: Our GPA is improving. Five of our 10 schools improved at least a letter grade.
This year Peters Elementary jumped to an A from a C, joining Central Park and Tropical as elementary schools earning As. Mirror Lake, Plantation Park and Plantation Elementary all received Bs. Seminole Middle improved to a B this year, while Plantation Middle maintained its C status.
Our two high schools, Plantation High and South Plantation High, each improved a letter grade, earning Bs.
North Acres Park: At its July 24 meeting, the City Council approved an agreement with the construction company that will build North Acres Park. Once the notice to proceed is issued, construction is planned to take about eight months. But the rainy season may cause delays.
The City Council, our City Engineer and I are excited to deliver on this promise to the community.
Parks & Recreation Month: July was Parks and Recreation Month and more than two dozen employees turned up to accept a proclamation from the city. With 42 parks and programs for all ages and interests, our Parks and Recreation Department is one of the major contributors to the unparalleled quality of life in Plantation. Water Meter Upgrades: We have begun the last phase of our water meter upgrades, so you may soon see our contractor National Metering Services, Inc. in your neighborhood. They will need access to the meter box, but not inside anyone’s home or business. National Metering Service Inc. technicians, wearing highly visible safety gear and uniforms, are expected to perform meter box replacements in various areas of the City over the next seven months.
Once the project is complete, all our water customer accounts will have access to EyeOnWater, which allows you to monitor your consumption and set up notifications for leak alerts.
Capriotti's Opening: Capriotti's, known for its “Thanksgiving on a roll,” has opened in Plantation. The sandwich chain is popular in the Northeast, but this will be only the second South Florida location.
”The Bobbie“ sandwich is their most popular, consisting of slowroasted turkey, cranberry sauce and stuffing.
Capriotti's is at 1023 S. University Drive, at Market on University.
ARE YOU A MILLENNIAL OR A PARENT OF A MILLENNIAL?
By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.
Not having an estate plan is a failure to launch. The time to plan is now!
Here’s a quick guide to key estate planning steps tailored to all millennials out there.
As a millennial, you're shaping the future. It's time to protect your own—because adulting is hard enough without worrying about what happens next.
1. Pick Your Decision-Makers If you become unable to make decisions due to illness or injury, no one can step in without legal authorization. Choose who will handle your finances and healthcare by setting up a financial power of attorney and a medical power of attorney. You wouldn’t let just anyone pick your Netflix queue—don’t let them pick your life choices either.
2. Review Your Employment Forms Make sure your beneficiary designations for life insurance and retirement accounts are up-to-date. Incorrect or missing information could lead to your assets going through probate, delaying and complicating matters for your loved ones. Think of it like filling out your online dating profile—details matter!
3. Decide on Life Insurance Beneficiaries
• Individuals: A lump sum can be vulnerable to creditors or mismanagement. Imagine someone blowing it all on avocado toast or a girls’ trip to Vegas.
• Trust: Provides protection and control over how funds are used. It’s like setting up parental controls for your money.
• Charity: A meaningful way to leave a legacy. Plus, you can finally prove that you’re as philanthropic as you claimed on Instagram.
4. Name Your Retirement Beneficiaries
• Spouse: They may roll the account into their own for better asset protection. The ultimate “what’s yours is mine.”
• Minor Children: Consider setting up protections for when they reach adulthood. You don’t want them cashing out to buy the next viral gadget.
• Trust: Helps manage distributions and protect funds from creditors. Because sometimes, your money needs a babysitter.
• Charity: Reduces potential estate taxes. Giving back while keeping Uncle Sam at bay.
5. Have a Plan If You’re Unmarried Without a plan, state laws decide who inherits your assets, often leaving out significant others. Ensure your estate plan reflects your wishes. Don’t leave it to an accidental disaster like your last Hinge, eHarmony or Tinder date.
6. Don’t Forget Your Pets Appoint a caregiver and consider setting aside funds for your pet's care. You can even establish a trust to manage these funds and ensure your pet’s well-being. Because let’s face it, your fur baby is your real soul mate.
Start Planning Today. Thinking about the future can be tough, but planning now ensures peace of mind. Call us today, and let’s adult together—without the stress.
Steps to Take If Your Child IS BEING BULLIED IN SCHOOL
By John Wai
As kids head back to school, it’s important to recognize that bullying, unfortunately, remains a common issue. To help your child navigate this, start by having an open conversation about what bullying is so they can recognize it. Whether it’s verbal harassment or physical aggression, understanding what constitutes bullying is the first step.
If your child has been bullied, it's crucial to communicate this to the teacher or school officials promptly. I recommend doing this in writing so that the incident is documented. Documentation is key; it ensures that each case is taken seriously and followed up on. If necessary, request a meeting with school officials to discuss the matter in detail.
Every incident of bullying should be reported, and the school should be notified each time. Keeping a record of these events will help create a clear picture of the situation and hopefully get the bully to stop the bullying in school.
Beyond communication, educating your child on how to defend themselves is essential.
This is where martial arts training comes in. Enrolling your child in martial arts, such as Muay Thai or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, equips them with practical self-defense skills. These martial arts teach kids how to defend themselves under pressure, making them more confident and less likely to be targeted by bullies. It is important for kids to learn a systematic approach to handling a bullying situation.
At our academy, we teach the “3 T’s” of bullying prevention:
1. Talk: Encourage your child to speak up the first time they are bullied. Let the bully know that their actions are hurtful.
2. Tell: If the bullying continues, your child should tell a trusted adult, like a teacher, principal, or school official.
3. Takedown: If the situation escalates to physical bullying, your child should use Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques to take down and control the bully on the ground. This approach is more effective than punching or kicking back, which may cause harm, and teaches self-control.
Proper training and education are key to empowering your child to handle bullying effectively. By taking these steps, you can help your child build the confidence and skills they need to stand up to bullies and be a happy, confident kid.

Meet Jocko! We had been searching for a pup for a while when we came across him online and instantly fell in love. As a rescue, he was close to being euthanized, and that’s when we knew he had to join our family. At 10 months old, we adopted him, and he’s been a daddy’s boy ever since. Jocko, a blue-nosed pitty, loves playing with soccer balls and is incredibly loyal. His gratitude for his new family shines through every day. Jocko’s favorite activity is playing fetch, and our favorite thing about him is his unwavering loyalty and those sweet kisses.
