ast year more than 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer and 685,000 died, according to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (ABCF). Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. It accounts for about ¼ of all cancers in women and 12 percent of all new cancer cases across all sexes. In the United States, there will be about 280,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed. Despite massive progress in diagnosis and treatment, about 15% of those diagnosed will eventually succumb to the disease. But, there is hope. Over the past 45 years, the five-year survival rate has significantly increased for breast cancer patients. In fact, people with localized disease at the time of diagnosis now have a 99% five-year survival rate, while the survival rate for women with metastatic breast cancer, that has spread beyond her breast, is just 28%. Early detection is perhaps the most important thing. The ABCF recommends women should regularly conduct self-examinations beginning in their 20s and receive annual mammograms beginning in their 40s. There are many new promising therapies being tested and developed. More important than a new miracle drug, however, is identifying a lump or change in your body. And, if you do detect something, seek medical help. It could make all the difference.

Healing With a Touch of Ink Brazilian Touch Aesthetics Gives Breast Cancer Survivors The Confidence They Deserve By Terry Jaillet
P
Pauline Marinho
auline Marinho has been helping women feel more beautiful since she was a little girl. At just 12 years old, she fixed the eyebrows of her mother’s esthetics clients in Brazil. Seven years later, Pauline immigrated to Miami at 19 despite not speaking English or even Spanish. After her young marriage fell apart, Pauline supported herself any way she could, working as a house cleaner, babysitter, and bartender. Then, tragedy struck her family. Her aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer and needed a mastectomy. Her surgery resulted in the loss of her nipples. Pauline felt a calling and began researching nipple reconstruction using tattoos. Her passion to help
people and skills honed since she was a young girl enabled her to help women like her aunt. She found her calling!
Medical Tattoos
Plastic surgery helps women reconstruct their breasts to a size and shape that they are comfortable with. Unfortunately, the surgeons can only give you the shape, not the color. Pauline and the team at Brazilian Touch Aesthetics use state-of-the-art technology to create a remarkably accurate nipple for their clients. Their work helps breast cancer survivors feel like themselves again. Using the same techniques, Pauline can also camouflage a scar to reduce the visual impacts of surgery. She and her highly skilled team are trained to work with oncology patients. They have a tremendous amount of experience working on people’s skin and take pride in helping every client recapture the confidence they deserve. “After I help a survivor reconstruct her nipple after mastectomy surgery, it makes me so happy,” said Pauline, “those smiles have no price for me. I feel so happy in my Beautiful Clinic. This is not a job anymore, it is a Passion, a dream comes true.”

Permanent Makeup
The team at Brazilian Touch Aesthetics uses the same techniques that they perfected for medical tattoos to give clients permanent makeup that never goes away. They offer stylized permanent eyebrow makeup, lip color correction, and eyeliner treatments to help clients feel more confident and happier in their own skin. Permanent makeup also saves women hours every on their makeup. They work closely with each client to make sure their goals are attained.

Broward County Public Schools Launches
Coronavirus (COVID-19) Dashboard By Terry Jaillet
B
roward County Public Schools (BCPS) launched a webbased dashboard to give parents up-to-date information on the number of within their school community who have tested positive for COVID-19. The dashboard, which is updated daily, can be broken down by students and faculty and is sortable by school.
The data are reported based on the day the positive test is reported to the school. Confirmed cases are as reported to the school system’s Risk Management and Coordinated Student Health Services, based on the date tested as reported to the District. Parents are cautioned that there could be delays in the reporting.
BCPS created the dashboard to give as much transparency as possible to families with children in school. The district reopened with mask mandates at all schools. The school board has been in a public battle with Governor Ron Desantis over the board’s decision to require masks. According to the New Your Times’ Coronavirus Case Count, Broward County has seen an increasing number of new cases since June. The county as a whole is currently averaging more than 2,000 new cases a day, which is the highest level of new cases since the epidemic began. The Broward County Commission has also created several dashboards to help residents get up-to-date information. These include a map showing the percent of residents who are vaccinated and a report on hospital utilization.

SCHOOL NEWS
Westpine Middle School
Chosen for Innovative Learning Schools Program
B
roward County Public Schools (BCPS) expands participation in the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools program. In partnership with Digital Promise, the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools program provides free tech education and devices to students at four middle schools for the 2021/22 school year. Students and teachers at Gulfstream Academy of Hallandale Beach, Olsen Middle School, Pines Middle School, and Westpine Middle School will receive free devices, internet access, and innovative learning programs. The four middle schools join this award-winning education initiative, which addresses barriers to digital inclusion. This Innovative Learning Schools program provides free devices, internet access, and innovative learning programs to help give under-resourced students the technology, education, and opportunity they deserve. Being part of the program will keep students connected, helping to facilitate learning from anywhere – in the classroom, at home, or in hybrid learning environments. Powered by a next-gen, technology-infused education model, Verizon Innovative Learning also equips each school with a technology coach and provides professional development support for teachers to effectively integrate technology into the classroom. Teachers in the program have reported that the initiative helped prepare them for remote learning, allows for more individualized instruction, and elevates student engagement. Students have reported that assignments are easier with the use of technology, and having it improves their confidence in the things they are able to accomplish.* “So many students across the nation lack the access to technology and resources they need to be successful in today’s digital world,” said Merdochey LaFrance, Government Affairs, Verizon. “On behalf of Verizon, we are excited to help enable students in Broward County Public Schools to develop the skills, knowledge and capabilities for a more promising future,” said Giovanni Castro, Government Affairs, Verizon. Gulfstream Academy of Hallandale Beach, Olsen Middle, Pines Middle, and Westpine Middle are among 246 new schools joining Verizon Innovative Learning Schools for the 2021/22 school year, equipping nearly 183,000 new students with technology resources and bringing the program’s impact to more than 500 schools nationwide. A total of 3,307 devices will be provided to the four BCPS middle schools as part of the program.

ASK THE EXPERT
Debunking Myths about Breast Cancer By Alia Abdulla DO
Myth 1: Wearing a bra (with or without underwire) can cause breast cancer.
A study, published in 2014, looked at the correlation between breast cancer and bras. It found that the patients diagnosed with breast cancer were NOT RELATED TO BRAS. They did find that people who take hormone replacement therapy, have a first-degree family history of breast cancer, or who have not had children all are at higher risk for breast cancer, however.
Myth 2: Wearing antiperspirant or deodorant can cause breast cancer.
Some rumors say that underarm deodorants and antiperspirants, especially those containing aluminum and other chemicals, are absorbed into the lymph nodes and make their way into breast cells, increasing cancer risk. Shaving the underarms is said to make this worse by creating tiny nicks that allow more of the chemicals to enter the body. Some think that antiperspirants, by stopping underarm sweating, can prevent
the release of toxic substances from the underarm lymph nodes, also increasing cancer risk. There is no evidence of a link between antiperspirant use and breast cancer. Some studies have found that women who use aluminum products under their arms are more likely to have higher concentrations of aluminum in breast tissue.
Myth 3: Carrying your cell phone in your bra can cause breast cancer.
There is no evidence of a connection between cell phones and breast cancer, but the safety of cell phones is still being studied. The research isn’t there to support this claim but cell phone manufacturers often do recommend keeping your device away from your body as much as possible.
Myth 4: Consuming too much sugar causes breast cancer.
There is no evidence that sugar in the diet causes breast cancer. There’s a common myth that sugar can feed the cancer and speed up its growth. All cells, whether cancerous or healthy, use the sugar in the
22 / Our City Plantation / October 2021 / OurCityMedia.com
blood (called glucose) as fuel. While it’s true that cancer cells consume sugar more quickly than normal cells, there isn’t any evidence that excessive sugar consumption causes cancer. Eating too much sugar can lead to weight gain and being overweight is an established risk factor for breast cancer. In addition, some studies have linked diabetes with a higher risk of breast cancer — especially more aggressive, later-stage cancers.
Myth 5: All breast cancer is treated pretty much the same way.
Treatment plans vary widely depending on the characteristics of the cancer and patient preferences. Many people have a vague idea that breast cancer requires some combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and maybe chemotherapy, but they don't know much beyond that. Each person’s treatment plan is tailored to his or her needs.

However, he doesn’t do it alone, his wife Cinthya is right by his side to round up those with a love of the game and a philanthropic spirit. In the past few months, the couple has raised tens of thousands of dollars for various military foundations. The next tournament will be held November 5th – 7th at Plantation Central Park. For the second time, they will be raising funds for The Wounded Warrior Project Foundation. The ambitious couple’s goal is to empower these warriors by participating, donat-
ing, and giving a voice to those on their journey to recovery. “I choose military charities because I served in the military and like to give back,” exclaimed Andy Rubenstein. “However, none of this could be done without the partnership with the city leaders, volunteers, and sponsors.” The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) was founded in 2003 and serves veterans and service members who have suffered a physical, mental injury, illness, or wound while serving in the military from Sept. 11, 2001, or after. The mission is to honor and empower Wounded Warriors with a vision to foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service
members in our nation’s history. According to Wounded Warrior Project Community Fundraising Resource Development Coordinator Julian Willis, more than 52,000 servicemen and women were injured in recent military conflicts, another 500,000 are living with “invisible wounds,” from depression to post-traumatic stress disorder, and 320,000 have experienced debilitating brain trauma. The 3-day event will include both Singles, Mixed Open, Mixed Doubles, and Doubles Skill for both men and women. Players from all over the state are invited to participate. Food trucks and vendors will also be on-site. “I just started playing about 6 years ago and trained in

Plantation Fire Department
Will Never Forget By Beverly Perkins ust last month as a nation, all of us honored and mourned those fallen two decades ago in New York City. September 11, 2001, changed lives forever. Each year since the tragic day, memorial ceremonies and moments of silence commence across the nation so that we always remember and never forget.

PFD Crew Chief Jesse Penate (center)
Many members of the Plantation Fire Department (PFD) attend the 9/11 Memorial each year and this year they were joined in NYC by over 150 members from all South Florida fire departments to commemorate the 20th anniversary. Some attended for the very first time, including Plantation’s Crew Chief Jesse Penate who has been with the PFD since 2008. “It’s one thing to watch it on TV, but to be there in person truly makes it very real about what happened on that horrible day. We are truly humbled and grateful to be able to represent Plantation and be among the other departments representing South Florida,” expressed Penate. Today the Plantation Fire Department is the largest volunteer fire department in Florida. It is a multi-faceted community service agency providing a variety of services including fire suppression, emergency medical
services, fire prevention, public education, and emergency management. “It has been an honor and a privilege to attend the 20th Anniversary of 9/11 in NYC alongside my fellow brothers and sisters. Some who I’ve known for more than 20 years since childhood. Hearing each name of the 343 brave heroes lost on 9/11 as well as 250 plus others that passed away from complications since then was chilling, to say the least,” said Penate. “It’s humbling and moving that members of the FDNY are thanking us for coming and showing their appreciation for us being here.” “It was nice to see the brotherhood come together for the 20th anniversary of 9/11. I’m proud of our members for making the trip to NYC to pay their respects and represent the Plantation Fire Department.,” added Plantation Fire Chief Don Todd.

About Winterfest
Winterfest, best known for its one-of-a-kind Boat Parade, brings together our community and visitors from around the world. In 1988, community leaders decided to build upon the popularity of the Boat Parade and create a Not For Profit organization that would make the Parade and all of its surrounding events into a worldclass community extravaganza. Winterfest encourages and promotes diversity among all Fort Lauderdale cultures, races, and religions. Winterfest has a huge base of 300+ volunteers, supporters, and sponsors led by its Board of Directors. ig things are on the horizon for 16-year-old International Dance Academy (IDA) student Paula Zapata. The aspiring ballerina will be packing her slippers and moving to New York City to join the Jackie Kennedy Onassis School at the American Ballet Theater (ABT). The prestigious pre-professional ballet training program is available, by invitation only, to a limited number of student dancers, ages 12-17, from The United States and around the world. “It is a dream come true for a dancer who sets her goals at dancing professionally on the world’s finest stages,” exclaimed Mary Buttner, Director of International Dance Academy. “Since Paula walked through our doors, we immediately knew that she was special. We just knew we had someone so special and quite phenomenal. It is an honor of breathtaking proportions, and we are so proud!” Ten years ago, Paula’s parents never expected the “tutu” cute six-year-old to follow her dream and excel and achieve an honor of such magnitude. Like all great parents, they just wanted to give their daughter the very best opportunity to learn what she desired at that stage in her life. Fortunately, they found International Dance Academy and Paula found her second home. “The environment at IDA is amazing. It has been the best place for Paula to learn and train. She knew what she wanted at such a young age, and I watched her passion grow along with her love of the art here at the Academy,” explained Paula’s mother, Diana Zapata. The ambitious dancer was encouraged by her teacher, Deborah Buttner, Artistic Director of the International Dance Academy in Weston to audition for the ABT

Summer Program. She impressed the ABT talent scouts and teachers at the distinguished program so much that they invited her to join their program this fall at their impressive school in New York City. Paula has excelled in all aspects and gives 110% in every class. She also performs major roles on stage in IDA’s professional IBC productions such as Nutcracker, Little Red Riding Hood, and so many more. Additionally, throughout the years she has assisted Mary Buttner by demonstrating techniques to the younger pupils. The eager ballerina also attained the esteemed Advanced I Diploma in the Royal Academy of Dance examinations “We realized at that young age that Paula was going to shine, and she sure has!” said Deborah Buttner. “All these years she has shown her dedication, work ethic, and ability to focus and work extra work. Paula is a humble, kind, and beautiful young lady with a huge future ahead of her. She leaves for New York City with the love and best wishes of her teachers and friends at the International Dance Academy.”

Achilles Tendon Injuries By Dr. Warren Windram D.P.M. Dealing with a sudden or constant pain to the back of your leg? Achilles tendonitis is a condition revolving around inflammation to the biggest tendon in your body. Constant over use is seen in the elite to recreational athlete through activities that stress the tendon (tennis, basketball, running). Even the “weekend warrior” that places increased demand to the tendon during participation of extra curricular activities can aggravate this condition. People have a tendency to ignore this short-lived pain since the inflammation usually resolves, but if not resolved, it may lead to degeneration of the tendon and possibly small tears (tendinosis). (Figure 1) The pain associated with
Achilles tendinitis typically begins as a mild ache in the back of the leg or above the heel after running or other sports activity. Episodes of more-severe pain may occur after prolonged running, stair climbing, or sprinting. You might also experience tenderness or stiffness, especially in the morning, which usually improves with mild activity. It is common to see sudden ruptures of the Achilles tendon in the adult population from repeated over-use and neglect of the initial symptoms. Symptoms of a rupture include the feeling of having been kicked in the calf, pain and swelling near the heel, inability to bend the foot downward or “push off” the injured leg when walking, inability to stand on the toes of the injured leg, and even hearing a popping or snapping sound when
the injury occurs. Treatment for Achilles tendonitis can be directed by a foot and ankle surgeon after diagnosing the condition with simple immobilization, ice, oral medication, orthotics (custom device to treat gait abnormalities), night splints, stretching, and even physical therapy. Prolonged symptoms and sudden ruptures require a MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) for early identification of Achilles tendinopathy and detailed evaluation of the tendon itself. Surgical intervention will be determined based on the extent of the injury (mostly tendon ruptures and advanced tendon degeneration), which may include direct tendon repair with biocompatible, abrasion resistant suture (Fiber-wire/Fiber-tape) with associated hardware (anchors),
and augmentation with even applied biologics (platelet rich plasma, amniotic stem cells/grafts).

THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer
Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is
FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Q & A: Estate Planning & Home Ownership
I
By Bruce Iden, Esquire
have a will and it states that my home is being left to my children. Should I be concerned about probate? Yes. The reality is that your home, even if left to heirs in a will, cannot be legally sold without permission of the court, which means that your property must go through a probate administration. It is common knowledge that probate administration is costly and time consuming. Unfortunately, the process only moves as fast as the court dictates. My partner and I own our home together but we have not executed wills. What will happen to my home after I am gone? Most married couples own their home via ” tenants by the entireties,” and ownership transfers automatically to the surviving spouse. Once the surviving spouse passes, the home is subject to probate with ownership determined by the surviving spouse’s will, or if none, by the court. If a home is owned via “joint tenants with rights of survivorship” the deceased’s share will pass to the other joint owner, who may not be their spouse. Your situation can be addressed by consulting with an estate planning attorney who is also familiar with real estate matters. My spouse and I created a trust, but our attorney did not discuss our home ownership. Why? Addressing a client’s assets and assuring that they are not subject to probate is part of estate planning, often referred to as funding. In my practice, offering a blueprint for funding, including home ownership, is part of the process. Unfortunately, there are attorneys that create trusts and do not provide funding assistance. I recommend that you reach out to your estate planning attorney to ask about funding, addressing all of your assets including any real property you may own. So, how do I guarantee that my home is not subject to probate? There are several types of deeds that assure a home transfers to a new owner without the participation of the probate court. This is certainly not a do it yourself project, and should be done by someone who not only has experience with real property but understands the estate planning process. Your goal is to prevent problems down the road. My cousin sold his mom’s house after she died. She didn’t have a special deed, and he did not go through probate. How was he able to do this? Your cousin may have owned the house jointly with his mom, or she may have created a life estate deed naming your cousin as the remainderman. My spouse and I each have children from previous marriages. I’d like my home to eventually go to all our children. After I am gone, can my spouse change the deed so it only goes to her children? Yes, she can. With so many blended families, this is a common concern. But with creative planning, you can be assured that all children ultimately receive the house as an inheritance, regardless of which spouse passes first. versity of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years.
