“We worried about taking care of her house, taking care of her bills and especially taking care of her needs…all the things every daughter has to face when Mom is a senior living alone. Moving to The Palace solved all of that.”

There are good reasons why The Palace has been voted the #1 senior community in America. But maybe the best one is the peace of mind everyone in the family can enjoy day in, day out.

Every detail and every resident is #1 to us. You’ll never have to worry. And hopefully, you’ll always look this happy.

Rob’s BBQ: Authentic

Slow-Cooked Barbecue in the Heart of Broward

You can tell the difference between an authentic barbecue restaurant and a pretender as soon as you walk in. Rob’s BBQ is as authentic as you can get. An incredibly wonderful smoky smell greets you before you even open the door. The fun, but no-frills decor assures you that this restaurant focuses on the food and it shows. It is no wonder they have been voted best of Davie and Plantation for five consecutive years!

Homemade Holiday Menus & Catering

If you are having family in for the holidays, Rob’s makes it easy to host parties of all sizes! Let them do the cooking while you focus on spending time together. Robs has multiple traditional holiday options for you to choose from, including sliced ham, sliced turkey, and even whole roasted or smoked turkeys! They offer affordable meal packages for groups as small as six all the way up to their “Family Feast” package for 20-25 people. The meal packages have sides, homemade rolls, and fresh-baked pies included!

Best BBQ in Broward

They will continue to offer their classic melt-in-your-mouth bar becue dishes like ribs, pulled pork, beef brisket, and chicken. The dishes are not only delectable but also affordable. Rob’s uses only the finest ingredients and age-old family recipes to ensure every item on the menu will leave you coming back for more.

A family’s favorite dish is the Baby Back Ribs. Rob’s imports their ribs all the way from Denmark. They select each portion by hand to ensure every diner gets exactly what they are expecting. The ribs are tender and sweet, with just the right amount of smokey flavor without overpowering. They also have a wonderfully stocked salad bar for family members who are a bit less carnivorous!

It Is All About Family

Rob and Mary Scruby opened Rob’s BBQ in 1995 and have been serving South Florida’s favorite barbecue ever since. Their restaurant is a true family business. You might see two or three generations of Scrubys when you visit. Next time you are heading out with the kids be sure to stop by and say hello. Try the Key Lime Pie! It is worth a trip all by itself.

■ Rob’s BBQ is located at 837 Nob Hill Road, Plantation. Stop by for lunch or dinner today. Order take-out by calling 954-429-7627 or visit their website at www.robsfamilybbq.com

■ OUR CITY EATS

Small acts of kindness can be contagious. A few years ago, when our kids were in Elementary School, Christy dropped them off at school and decided to go to the drive-through at a coffee shop. When she got to the window, with her credit card in hand, the barista told her that the driver of the car in front of her had already paid for her order. Christy looked up, but the other car had already sped off, having accomplished their covert act of goodwill. Christy decided to pay the kindness forward, as did the car behind her. A chain reaction of friendly gestures began as the next car carried on giving the gift of a cup of cof fee as well.

We visited Deerfield Beach this weekend. We saw a mother, who was busy with twin young girls while her older son played in the surf. The tide slowly carried the boy down the beach, as it tends to do. The mother tried to get his attention over the sound of the surf to no avail. Seeing the distress on the mom’s face, a couple offered to watch the girls while she went to retrieve her son. All was well when they returned. We were grateful the kind couple was there to help the mom.

These simple gestures of doing good remind us of President George H. W. Bush’s 1989 inaugural address. He spoke about a thousand points of light. Individuals across the country do “good deeds” for the betterment of all.

Let’s make this holiday season a time when we all look out for each other. Be one of those points of light with an act of kindness.

Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet OUR CITY MEDIA PUBLISHERS Be a Point of Light This Holiday Season ■ PUBLISHER’S PAGE 8 / Our City Plantation / December 2022 / OurCityMedia.com Dr. Scott Denny, PhD, AP, DOM | Dr. Justine Denny, DNP, FNP-BC INTEGRATIVE HOSPITAL ASSOCIATES THE ATRIUM CENTER | 4801 S. Authentic italian

Cuisine

IN PLANTATION

Salvatore “Toti” Granata was born in Catania, Italy, the second-largest city in Sicily. The city was a hotbed of the Mediterranean culinary tradition and was the source of a life-long passion for cooking. He went on to study at the Scuola Italian Pizzaioli in Venice, collaborating with world Pizza Champion Chef Graziano Bertuzzo.

After developing businesses and restau rants in Spain, Italy, and Latin America, Toti, along with his wife Paola and daughters Nicole and Martina, came to the United States in 2016. They opened Pizza Lovers Bistro in Weston with one thought in mind: offer authentic Italian meals with top-quality ingredients at affordable prices. Their

original restaurant was so successful that they went on to open another location in Plantation.

We sat down with Salvatore to learn more. Tell us about Pizza Lover’s Bistro.

Pizza Lover’s Bistro is a place where flavors and aromas tell stories. They take us to the happiest moments of our childhood. Pizza Lovers is an Italian restaurant with a simple and warm ambiance, it’s culinary offerings include the most authentic flavors of homemade Italian cuisine. Pizza Lovers is a true family business! We have love and passion for what we do. We only use the finest ingredients, imported from Italy.

Sounds Fascinating, what makes Pizza Lovers different from other Italian restaurants?

One key difference is how we prepare our dough. The two factors for making the best pizzas are time and temperature. It takes 48 hours for our dough to properly mature. This must be done at a very specific temperature. Properly prepared dough makes our pizza more digestible and, with greater flavor.

Do you offer other items, in addition to pizza?

Of course! We have many other authen tic Italian dishes in addition to pizza. Some highlights of our cuisine are authentic risotto alla milanese with ossobuco, spaghetti with clams, lasagna della Nonna, fettuccine al tartufo, swordfish alloa Siciliana and la pizza con la BURRATA. We also have a wonderful selection of authentic Italian beers and wines for our guests to choose from.

Do you offer take-out and delivery?

Yes, we offer dine-in, take-out and, deliv ery. People can make a reservation or place an order through Open Table, our website, www.PizzaLoversBistro.com or call 954-306-3297.

Joy to the Seniors

For over 36 years, Meals on Wheels South Florida has been serving more than 10,000 seniors and 5,000 children an estimated 1.5 million meals each year. As one of 5,000 Meals on Wheels programs across the country. Meals on Wheels South Florida works diligently every day to protect the multitude of seniors from the threats of isolation and hunger. However, the nonprofit organization could not do it without the generous donors and volunteers who help in communities across America just like Broward County.

“Meals on Wheels South Florida is powered every day by community partners, staff, and volunteers standing up to lend a caring hand to their aging neighbors,” said Mark Adler, Executive Director for Meals on Wheels South Florida. “During the holidays we want our clients to remember that they are not alone and that we are here to pro vide them with a special holiday surprise.”

This December, Meals on Wheels South Florida is hosting its 20th annual Holiday Gift Box Program, where they provide 150 of their home-bound seniors in Broward County with a special holiday surprise of personal care items. Each holiday season, the generous hunger-relief organization’s goal is to ensure their clients enjoy the holidays as much as possible.

In addition to the nutritious meals and safety checks they already receive; Meals on Wheels South Florida staff and volunteers visit clients during the week of Christmas and present them with a giftwrapped box filled with personal care items.

These boxes are delivered to clients who are generally alone and without family to visit them during the holidays. But much like everything else, it takes assistance from the local community to donate these personal care items such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, detergent, and more.

“It means the world to me that Meals on Wheels South Florida surprises me during the holidays with this gift box. Living on a fixed income, generous gifts like this make all the difference,” exclaimed Teresa F., 79, of Plantation.

▸ Members of the community can get involved with the Holiday Gift Box Program by donat ing personal care items or making financial gifts to help purchase items. Items are being received at the Meals on Wheels headquar ters located at 451 N. State Road 7 in Planta tion Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. until December 15th. Those wishing to donate or volunteer for this program can call 954-731-8770 or email vol unteer@mowsoflo.org for more information.

Local Sailor Selected for Elite Navy Honor Guard

Anative of Sunrise, Florida, recently com pleted an intensive 10-week training program to become a member of the elite U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard.

Airman Noah-Michael Criscella, a 2017 Piper High School graduate and a 2020 graduate of Broward Community College high school, joined the Navy six months ago. Today, Criscella

serves as a U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guardsman.

“I joined the Navy to serve my country and create a stable career for myself,” said Criscella.

Established in 1931, the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard is the official honor guard of the U.S. Navy and is based at Naval District Washington Anacostia Annex in Washington, D.C.

According to Navy officials, the U.S. Navy

Ceremonial Guard’s primary mission is to rep resent the service in Presidential, Joint Armed Forces, Navy, and public ceremonies in and around the nation’s capital. Members of the Navy Ceremonial Guard participate in some of our nation’s most prestigious ceremonies, including Presidential inaugurations and arrival ceremonies for foreign officials.

“I have learned in the Navy the importance of attention to detail and looking out for my shipmates,” said Criscella. “I also have learned how vital it is to take responsibility and account ability for my actions. Lastly, I learned to always give my all and to work hard in everything I do. That fills me with a deep sense of pride.”

Sailors of the Ceremonial Guard are hand selected while they are attending boot camp at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois. Strict military order and discipline, combined with teamwork, allow the Ceremonial Guard to fulfill their responsibilities with pride and determination. They are experts in the art of close order drill, coordination and timing.

The Ceremonial Guard is comprised of the drill team, color guard, casket bearers and firing party.

“I most enjoy seeing all the hard work and dedication that my fellow shipmates embody paired with the strong sense of camaraderie we have at this command,” said Criscella.

There are many opportunities for sailors to earn recognition in their command, community and careers.

“I am proud to have made it through boot camp and Alpha Company training,” said Criscella. “I’m also proud to have the opportunity and honor of joining the elite ranks of the Ceremonial Guard.”

As a member of the U.S. Navy, Criscella, as well as other sailors, know they are a part of a service tradition providing unforgettable experiences through leadership development, world affairs and humanitarian assistance. Their efforts will have a lasting effect around the globe and for generations of sailors who will follow.

“To me, serving in the Navy means creating stability in my life and giving my life a sense of order,” added Criscella. “Serving in the Navy means making my family proud and moving toward my dreams.”

COUNTDOWN TO A STRESS-FREE 2023

Estate planning can be an unsettling process, but it is a blueprint for "peace of mind." Everyone from Uber drivers to the Uber wealthy should have a plan in place. While many believe it is only for the elderly, your plan should be in place at any age. We want to protect our lives, our autonomy, and our future to enjoy the years to come worry-free. Here are 6 ways to enjoy a stress-free 2023!

6.- Complete Health Care Directives.

Unless your wishes are explicitly in writing and legally sufficient, doctors and hospitals are not required to follow your wishes. Medical personnel are not legally bound to listen to your loved ones, even if "they know what you would want." In fact, it is forbidden to speak to your loved ones without the necessary HIPAA Release in place. Ensure every required healthcare document, including a Health Care Surrogacy, is completed and readily available to your loved ones.

5.-

Appoint a Durable Power of Attorney.

This is potentially your most important document. Your POA "Agent" is someone you would trust your life with … literally. While deciding who should be your POA, you must be comfortable with them handling all financial matters. You should get the help of an attorney, as the laws are constantly evolving and state-specific. In Florida, it must be witnessed, notarized, and have specific provisions initialed.

4.- Review any Will or Trust Over 5 Years or Sign a New One

Surprisingly, most Americans do not have a will. Under Florida law, if you do not execute a will, your assets will be distributed in Probate Court according to the Laws of Intestacy, which may be pricey and overwhelming. 1,001 things can go wrong without a Will and/or Revocable Living Trust. It must be legally sufficient to allow your property to pass without concern. Most importantly, YOU need to be comfortable with it.

3.-Make sure your Beneficiaries are up to date.

The number one reason an estate lands in probate is for assets missing a beneficiary. Sometimes a named beneficiary will pass before the account owner or is no longer a loved one. Recently Suntrust merged with Truist. I had a client whose beneficiary designations on her investment accounts, now held by Truist, were missing! Check each of your accounts annually.

2.- Remember your furry friends.

For many of us, our pets are considered part of the family. If something were to happen to you, who would you trust to take care of your fur baby? How will they pay for their care? Florida Law allows you to create a pet trust- Problem solved!

1.- Keep control of Digital Assets and Accounts.

More frequently, we conduct business online. What happens to online assets and accounts after you die or lose capacity? Create a list of your online accounts and digital devices with access information for your family.

It will be spring before we know it, and another year will pass without accomplishing your goals. Contact an Estate Planning attorney to help you reach these goals without stress! Remember, as with anything, start small, and you can check off these to-dos step by step.

able for families. These options include Magnet Programs, Nova Schools, or a reassignment School. Parents can submit one application for each option per child. Applications must be submitted on BCPS’ website prior to February 3.

The Elusive Stress Fracture in the Runner

othing is more frustrating to a runner than an injury which occurs just when the training sched ule calls for ramping up mileage or intensity in time for competition. During my 35 years as a foot and ankle spe cialist treating runners in our community, I have personally witnessed not just the physical, but the emotional toll these injuries can inflict, and can truly empathize with them as I myself have fallen victim to these same unfortunate circumstances, and on multiple occasions. As runners we forget that our sport is not a passive but violent one, as each foot strike results in an impact equivalent to 3 or 4 times our body weight. To put it bluntly, training is a form of self-inflicted injury with the hopes that the ongoing cycle of injury and healing will ultimately lead to stronger muscles, tendons and bones after recovery. This is a positive and most desirable outcome which we refer to as “conditioning”. Unfortunately training exuberance tips the balance in favor of injury, sometimes with the best intentions of the coach, family or athlete and leads to the body’s inability to perform. This is when breakdown (injury) occurs resulting in a concept I call “reverse conditioning” secondary to overtraining.

One such common overuse running injury is referred to as a stress reaction which in later stages develops into a stress fracture. Most athletes with a stress reaction present with an insidious onset of pain in a focal area sometimes confused with muscle soreness or tendinitis. Stress reactions and stress fractures represent fatigue failure injuries and are secondary to overuse. A stress reaction precedes a stress fracture in the bone fatigue continuum and is hallmarked by microscopic failure without an actual visible break in the bone. X-rays are typically negative in this stage of injury and better imaged with bone scans or MRI. The MRI is a very sensitive imaging technique which depicts swelling in bone at this early stage. As the fracture continues to develop, heat, swelling and pain are noticed during everyday activities. In severe cases the pain eventually precludes comfortable weight bearing and physical exercise causing the athlete to limp.

Stress on bone creates constant remodeling affecting a balance between the cells which eliminate injured bone (like tiny vacuum cleaners) and cells which replace injured bone with newer healthier bone. Overtraining, either by adding mileage, speed or inclines will tilt the balance in favor of the cells evacuating injured bone. This ultimately results in a negative balance of healthy bone cells progressing to stress injury.

NAdding insult to injury, weak muscles in the thigh and leg supporting the bone structure by absorbing shock may further stress the physiologic capacity of bone to maintain its integrity causing it to fatigue. This is not unlike bending a paper clip back and forth until heat develops causing the metal wire to fatigue until it snaps into two segments. Stress fractures are very similar as the continued stress of training results in fatigue failure of bone, leading to microscopic cracks and subsequent true fracture if allowed to continue. It is during these late stages of the process that X-rays become a more reliable tool.

Not All Stress Fractures Are The Same

Stress fractures are generally classified into two types: low risk fractures- those that heal well and usually without long term sequelae and high-risk fractures - those which do not heal well and often require surgery. The designation of these two classification systems are essentially based on the location of these fractures. Bone stress injury treatment and return to play decision making is based on the site of injury, potential for healing and risk of significant complication. Proper treatment of the fracture is essential to avoid under -or over treating the condition. Clearly over treating the fracture may result in an unnecessary disruption of training and subsequent loss of physical conditioning referred to as “deconditioning”. Stress fractures deemed as high risk pose a significant risk for recurrence due to inadequate healing and at times may result in potentially devastating complications leading to career ending injuries. Prompt diagnosis and treatment is fundamental in allowing proper healing thereby minimizing the impact of the injury.

Treatment

Treatment for stress fractures should not focus on boney healing but should include an investigation of what we refer to as the intrin sic and extrinsic causes which resulted in the injury in the first place. Intrinsic factors include 1. Biomechanical- body type, foot type, inherent weakness and flexibility, and a factor many gloss over- running technique, 2. Nutritional specifically insufficient intake of protein, calcium and vitamin D 3. Hormonal factors- the most notable of which is estrogen. Female athletes with low bone mass have a higher predilection for certain stress fractures. This is especially noted in women at risk. This includes those with low body mass, or have stopped menstruating and/or have a history or family history of osteoporosis. This group will require a proper medical workup consisting of blood tests and a bone density scan often requiring a team approach with various specialists.

Extrinsic factors on the other hand consist of training errors and improper equipment. This includes but is not limited to the influences of

terrain, running form and improper running shoes. To be effective, an individualized developmental plan for an effective return to play schedule should take these factors into consideration. The strategy, particularly when dealing with low risk fractures, may require decreasing training volume and intensity, using proper equipment, changing running technique, and cross training. Using this tactic assures that the athlete does not suffer a substantial loss of conditioning while recovering from injury. Sports medicine physicians realize all too well that extended time off training may adversely affect the recovery. Recouping the body’s strength, flexibility and ability to balance is significantly hindered with overprotective measures and results in an extended loss of training time. So why create a problem in order to solve one? With a proper rehabilitation plan, the athlete is given the best chance for a faster recovery while resulting in a protective effect from future injury.

Alternatively, high risk stress fractures as previously mentioned have more frequent com plications such as poor healing, non-healing, and at times re-fracturing after healing is thought to have been completed. These are very frustrating scenarios which unfortunately often leads the athlete to abandon the sport. The treatment for high risk stress fractures should be based on the immediate goal of preventing any progression of the fracture and avoiding long-term complica tions. Because of the significant complications associated with this injury, it is suggested that athletes with evidence of a high-risk stress fracture immediately discontinue their activity. Unfortunately, with these fractures, prolonged immobilization with weight bearing restrictions or operative management are often the treatments of choice.

So, remember to listen to those nagging injuries and avoid reverse conditioning. Make sure that you heed the signs of injury before the injury heeds you.

I

’d like to take this opportunity to talk about this city I love. I was elected mayor of Plantation on Nov. 8, 2022, and sworn in on Nov. 18.

I am honored you picked me to lead the city for the next four years. I moved here in 1993, raised my children here, and in 2018 became a city council member. These past four years have given me an up-close view of our city’s needs.

I’ve also been studying other cities and keeping a computer file of ideas, both big and small. I’ll weigh when to explore each one but I’d like to use this space today to share my thoughts on three vital components that I think are important to residents:

SUBHED Public Safety

I ask residents to punch in their phones, 954-797-2100, and mark it “Plantation Police.” That’s the city’s non-emergency number. Our police department has been effective in reaching out to residents, but we need your help if you see something. Your call can help deter a crime.

There also has been a recent spike in vacation rental party homes. Granted, some owners are good people and are responsible. But too many homes are becoming nightmares to their neighbors. I want to better coordinate code enforcement, police, and Planning and Zoning to make for the tightest rules on party homes.

I’m very comfortable with how our fire department and our emergency medical services are formatted. I am especially impressed with how our fire department works on fire prevention. We have fewer fires now than we used to and they get a big chunk of the credit for that.

SUBHED Communication

I’m honest, open and communicate with residents. And I know how to listen.

When there is a challenge, I will step forward and tell the community what is happening. As a former journalist, I am trained to study all sides of an issue before making a decision. I have made acquaintances with other government leaders and we learn from each other. I will work with council members to get their priorities accomplished.

I will bring new energy and attitude to City Hall, and we will attract talented employees. This will provide our residents with very good customer service. We will keep working to improve the ways residents are informed, including how we deploy social media.

SUBHED Development

During the past year, and especially during the campaign, council members heard residents’ views that they want to slow down housing development. The message is clear. As mayor, I will vet the projects first. If I think a proposal is overreaching, I will ask it to be reworked before it gets pushed along to planning and zoning and then to the city council.

That said, when I do have a proposal I think is worthwhile, I will explain why.

I will put the brakes on development, but no one can say we will have zero development. We need to balance the affordable housing challenge, for example, with traffic and residents’ wishes. I’ll work to ensure any development is thoughtful, controlled, and in harmony with the city we love.
