Let’s Celebrate Earth Day
E
very year, on April 22nd, people around the world recognize the importance of preserving and protecting our natural environment. Earth Day, as we call it today, was proposed by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson and founded in 1970. Since then, it has evolved from a day for teachers to focus on nature to a global rally day for environmentalists. Locally, Earth Day is a great day to celebrate the wonders of South Florida. Some of the best beaches in the world are just a few miles away. The Everglades, which is both an exciting natural refuge to visit and a critically important ecosystem, is right in our back yard. Just off shore, there are miles of coral reefs full of fish and wildlife. Preserving the beauty and splendor of our natural environment is critical for the continued enjoyment of this wonderful community. This year, let’s celebrate Earth Day by taking a step back from our fast-paced digital world and recognizing the splendor of the environment around us. You could visit the Long Key Nature Center in Davie, take an airboat ride through the Everglades, dip your toes in the surf, or simply spend a few hours at one our wonderful local parks. Whatever you do, feel fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Sincerely,

The “Coaches Slam” poetry competition will showcase the talent among local middle and high school teachers from South Florida. The Block Party will showcase performances by up-and-coming artists, a live band and DJ, dance performances, and interactive games for the entire family. Attendees may participate in a silent auction to also benefit the Jason Taylor Foundation. This event is part of the 13-day Louder Than A Bomb Florida festival which began last month and will run through April 8th. During the event, poetry bouts, workshops and exhibits will be featured culminating in the crowning of Florida’s top youth poetry team recognizing National Poetry Month. LIME Fresh Mexican Grill will also make a monetary donation. Louder than a Bomb Florida (#LTABFLA) is a Jason Taylor Foundation arts and education project that is part
of the Omari Hardwick bluapple Poetry Network and features friendly spoken-word competitions between schoolbased poetry teams across the state. The former Miami Dolphin legendary Defensive End and recent Pro Football Hall of Fame class member, Jason Taylor, established the Jason Taylor Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) organization. The Foundation’s mission is to support and create programs that facilitate the personal growth and empowerment of South Florida’s children in need by focusing on improved health care, education and quality of life. Taylor along with several partners then created the Omari Hardwick bluapple Poetry Network. This organization provides after-school spoken word poetry programs to students attending Dade, Broward and Palm Beach county public schools through the Jason Taylor Foundation. Since opening its doors, the Jason Taylor Foundation has impacted tens of thousands of children through innovative programming including The Jason Taylor Reading Room, The Omari Hardwick bluapple Poetry Network, Louder Than A Bomb Florida, Cool Gear for the School Year, the Jason Taylor Children’s Learning Center and Jason Taylor Scholars, among others. Plantation Residents Can Join the Family Citizen Police ‘Academy’ COMMUNITY NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
M
any little ones, especially boys, when asked what they want to be when they grow up most often say, “A policeman”. According to most internet findings, being a police officer is always in the top ten between astronauts, doctors, athletes and firefighters. It’s most likely children make the correlation that police officers are like their favorite superheroes. They fight crime, protect the community, and help citizens. The Plantation Police Department recognizes the fascination many have, and will be offering a Family Citizen Police Academy. The 9-week course is free of charge and gives those interested a behind-thescenes look at how the department operates. The course is open to adults and children over 13 years of age who live, work, or have an affiliation with the City of Plantation. Classes are scheduled every Monday beginning on April 24th and run through June 26th, 2017 from 6:00pm-8:15pm at the Plantation Police Department, 451 NW 70th Terrace, Plantation. However, there will be no class on Memorial Day, May 29th. Attendance is not mandatory, but may be made up in a future session. Sessions will be held in the Plantation Police Department’s Community Media Room. Participants who complete the program will receive a certificate of completion. Those that do attend will be exposed to many every day examples of what police officers do in the community. The course includes a K-9 demonstra-
tion, firearms safety, a tour of the range, information on the Explorer program, gangs and organized crime, crime scene investigation and forensics. There will be participation in a D.U.I. scenario, viewing a robbery scenario, and much more. Not only does this program create a partnership between the public and the police department and its operations, but promotes an interest in children who are looking to possibly pursue a career in law enforcement. “We want people to know that the police are on their side, and we are here to protect and serve. This citizen police academy bridges the gap between the public and the department. If someone has always considered a career in law enforcement, this is the best way to get first-hand knowledge of what goes on and what it takes,” says Lynn Braden, Crime Prevention and Community Relations. “I believe the police are a lot more than just pulling people over and writing tickets. Our chief, Chief Harrison is very pro-active when it comes to police-public relations. It is completely different than what you see on TV, and it covers all the different departments, like K-9, crime scene investigation, and the detective bureau.”
Space is limited. Refreshments will be served. To register, or for more information, please call the Plantation Police Department Outreach, at (954) 916-5601 or visit www.plantation.org.
Blaze of Glory – Plantation Firefighters Climb for a Cause BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he inaugural Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Miami Firefighter Stair Climb was held earlier this year at the Miami Tower. Two Plantation firefighters were among many who participated in the first annual event. Marshall Newell and Alejandro Castillo climbed the 647 ft. tall, skyscraper, covering 47 stories for a total of 1,000 steps. They both completed the climb in approximately 45 minutes while wearing their full firefighting bunker gear and air packs. Newell has been a volunteer firefighter with Plantation since November of 2014. He is always

searching for fire related causes to become involved in so when he saw the flyer posted at the station, he immediately wanted to participate. Not knowing much about it, he solicited another friend and fellow firefighter Alejandro “Alex” Castillo to join him. “At first I didn’t even know what it was for,” declared Castillo. “Just climbing the Miami Tower sounded like fun.” The two had no idea that this event was actually a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and that firefighters from all over South Florida were becoming involved. They then got in high gear and started to obtain sponsors to raise money for the cause. Together their efforts raised approximately $1,000. Included in the sponsorships was a $200 donation from the Plantation Volunteer Fire Association, the member organization for the Fire Department. Family and friends came to cheer these brave men on including fellow firefighter David Gaskell. Gaskell carried the equipment and made sure the two had all they needed. However, the highlight for firefighter Newell was his daughter Ellie cheering him on. “Having her there to support me was very special,” Newell explained. “She always sees me running out the door for fire calls, but never really knows what I do. Finally, she got to see me all dressed out.” A highlight for Castillo was meeting firefighters

from Chile. He stated, “It’s great to participate in something like this with so many other firefighters, especially from around the world. Although they did not finish first in the group, these Plantation firemen were proud of their accomplishment. “Those last few floors were painful,” said Castillo. “But knowing it was for a good cause made it worth it.” Firefighters from West Palm Beach, City of Miami, Miami Dade, Miami Beach, and Davie Fire Rescues as well as a contingent of firefighters from Chile also participated in the climb making it an international event. According to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the climb was the first event of its kind in the Southeast United States designed to help raise funds for the organization through sponsorships, donations and fundraising. The Society noted that more than $12,000 was raised. A second event is scheduled for November 4th.

cer, we are not alone and stand together in this battle to fight cancer!” Unlike any other walkathon or fundraiser, teams are formed. These can be groups of families, friends, co-workers and other organizations. If you cannot
form your own team and want to participate, a Relay for Life Specialist can help you. Teams gather on site at sundown and spend the night walking, running and cheering each other on. Because cancer never sleeps, a member of each team must have at least one participant representing themselves on the track at all times.
COMMUNITY NEWS
I
t’s that time of year again when many communities gather all over the globe with one common goal: to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost and to raise funds to find a cure for cancer. This monumental fundraiser, and the single largest non-profit event in the world, is The American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life”. Last year over 4,850 communities participated in relay events across the United States. The American Cancer Society helps people with cancer right here in our own community. The following are just a few of the programs that the American Cancer Society funds: Lodging to thousands of patients at Florida’s Hope Lodges, “Look Good Feel Better” (a program to help cancer patients cope with the physical effects of cancer), and Road to Recovery (a program to help transport patients to life-saving treatments). This year the Plantation chapter will hold its’ event on Friday, April 21st at Central Park’s football track located at 9151 NW 2nd Street, Plantation at 6:30pm and it continues until Saturday, April 22nd. At the helm of the signature event will be Cindy Gress for the second time. “This will be my 18th year participating in Relay for Life. Being at a relay event is knowing that you are not alone”, says Gress. “Whether you are a survivor or a caregiver or know someone going through can-
Even though cancer is not fun, this event certainly is. Teams are encouraged to show their spirit by decorating their tents and tees, playing games, listening to live entertainment, eating great food and of course, making new lifelong friends. The overall goal is that by doing so, funds are being raised and awareness is made against the battle against cancer. The Relay for Life remains consistent in formalities no matter what part of the world it is in. One can expect seven parts where ever they are participating. Everyone receives a great big welcome at the Opening Ceremony (6:30pm). After that, the relay starts with the symbolic Survivor Lap. This honors survivors by allowing them to celebrate life and their victory over cancer. The next lap is the Caregiver Lap, which recognizes those who have
given care to cancer patients. After those two important tributes, everyone is invited to walk together during the Opening Lap. Next is the touching Luminaria Ceremony (9:30pm) where luminaria bags and candles are lit to honor loved ones who have passed on or are fighting the disease. These bags may be purchased at the Luminaria Tent, and candles will be provided. The following segment is Individual Walking which is observed throughout the night along with games, entertainment and activities. Finally, the relay concludes with the Fight Back Ceremony. Participants take a final lap and pledge to continue to take action and spread awareness of cancer research, treatments and prevention. “Save Lives, Celebrate Lives, and Lead the Fight for a World Without Cancer” – American Cancer Society’s Mission For more information about the Plantation Relay for Life and how to get involved, contact: Cindy Gress at plantationrelayforlife@gmailcom. Plantation Family Shows their Support at the 8th Annual Tour de Broward COMMUNITY NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he 8th annual ANF Group Tour de Broward raised more than $500,000 for Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital in Hollywood. An estimated crowd of 7,500 attended the anticipated event at Miramar Regional Park including Kelly Hickman and her five-year-old daughter, Za’Niyak of Plantation. These two led a team of more than 30 family and friends wearing purple “Team Za’Niyak” shirts in the 3K walk. The five-year-old already had two surgeries to correct congenital heart defects. “This is our 5th year taking part in the walk and we do it to thank the doctors for Za’Niyak’s well-being and to bring attention to the great work they do,” said Hickman. “It’s a great day and a great cause.” Almost everyone attending had a health-related story to share which was an inspiration for their participation. Attendees of all levels of fitness were able to cycle, run, or walk to support Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital at its annual fundraiser. A total of $503,218 was generated to expand facilities and enhance programs and services for kids and families at the children’s hospital in Hollywood. The event has now raised more than $3 million for pediatric healthcare in its eight-year history. “Through their ongoing support of Tour de Broward and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, the South Florida community once again made a loud statement about the quality of care it wants for children and the importance of having a local, world-class facility providing it,” said Memorial Healthcare System President & CEO Aurelio M. Fernandez, III, FACHE. Fernandez was one of the many that participated in the 5K timed run, while others chose to cycle in 50 or 100K rides, walk a 3K, or exercise in the United Healthcare “Power of Play Kid Zone,” a sports-themed, fun area for children 13 or
younger that featured ice skating, tennis, inflatables, arts & crafts, and kid-friendly activities. More than 150 teams raised money for the nonprofit Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation (www.jdchfoundation.org), with the group representing Memorial Hospital West donating the most. Many others - like Nina’s Trailblazers, Kidney Keepers, Palm Springs North Elementary, and Team Amelia - wore matching t-shirts and festive clothing while raising awareness of a specific person and illness. The nonprofit Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation provides philanthropic funding, in part through events like Tour de Broward, to support the children’s hospital’s mission. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (www.jdch.com) -- the largest pediatric hospital serving Broward, Palm Beach, and northern Miami-Dade counties -- has 224 licensed beds, seven operating rooms, and an entire floor dedicated to pediatric oncology. The stand-alone facility, part of the Memorial Healthcare System, combines advanced technology, the expertise of some of South Florida’s most diverse, board-certified specialists, and a patient and family-centered focus to heal the body, mind, and spirit of those it touches, regardless of their ability to pay.

Plantation High School Students Participate in MLK Day of Service
SCHOOL NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
P
lantation High School was one of the many organizations to participate in a partnership with Broward College and the 2017 MLK Day of Service Advisory Board to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. Funding from the Florida Legislature supported 36 community organizations that hosted volunteer projects in Broward County on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Among the participating organizations were YMCA of South Florida in Weston, Deerfield Beach Middle School, Sunshine Heart Mentoring Program and Broward College South Campus Service Learning. More than 3,100 volunteers registered for projects, a 15 percent increase from 2016, and logged 16,045 hours of service. Volunteers included community members, Broward College students, faculty and staff. Participants volunteered at events focusing on support for veterans, neighborhood improvement projects, health promotion, environmental initiatives, education, economic opportunity, and more. This year, volunteer projects were open to the public for participation. On February 23rd, Broward College honored the participating organizations with an awards ceremony and a celebration luncheon. Each organization was recognized for their efforts, and Dillard High School was honored for the most volunteers registered and the most hours logged. Plantation High School was awarded second place for “Most Hours Logged”, as they performed 2100 hours. These Colonels also received third place for “Most Volunteers” with 200 volunteers. Plantation High School’s project was the “Woodlawn Cemetery Historic Preservation Project”. Approximately 50 student volunteers participated and learned a bit about local history while contributing to the

preservation of one of the oldest cemeteries in South Florida. “This is service learning at its best, said Plantation High School History Teacher, Roberto Fernandez III. “This is what teaching should be.” Woodlawn Cemetery Dr. Rolando Garcia, Broward College Campus President, was established in the Judson A. After being David Shulman, Broward College Campus President, Broward College Online & Willis Holcombe Center owned by several people the cemetery began to deteriorate until the City of Ft. Lauderdale obtained it many years later. The City finally invested and made renovations and necessary improvements. However, volunteer projects such as Plantation High School’s help maintain the City’s endeavor. Students were able to identify, restore and preserve a part of history. Their preservation efforts focused on clearing debris from cemetery plot and cleaning the headstones and markers to preserve them. “This was our second year participating in the MLK Day of Service and working at Woodlawn Cemetery. Our students really enjoy participating in the service project and learning about local history in such a hands-on way,” added Fernandez III. “We were thrilled to be one of the top organizations for most volunteers and hours logged and hope to continue with that success next year.” Since 2015, the Broward College MLK Day of Service has funded 96 service projects and logged more than 34,801 volunteer hours in Broward County.

Sushi Chef Guo Li shares more about this popular restaurant that has been a favorite in the Weston community since 2005.
What distinguishes POC from other sushi buffets? Our style of food is called American-fusion. Think American-Asian culinary artists who really care about creating an unforgettable dining experience for you. Some of our sushi chefs, including myself, have worked in New York City.
How many types of sushi do you offer? The sushi buffet features over
30 selections of sushi, sashimi and skillfully prepared rolls. The selection varies daily, depending upon what types of fresh fish are available.
What if someone doesn’t eat sushi? No worries, POC has over 100
items on the buffet. There are about 25 entrees on the hot bar including POC’s infamous Grand Marnier Shrimp, as well as other Asian-inspired items including sesame chicken, chicken and steak teriyaki, tempura, dumplings and even fried rice. The cold bar features fresh seafood selections including Alaskan Snow Crab legs, cocktail shrimp, oysters and mussels, as well as a small salad bar. We also offer a delicious dessert buffet.
Do you offer made-to-order items? While all of our food is
made fresh, POC offers cookedto-order Japanese-style hibachi.
Choices include chicken, shrimp, New York strip steak, and scallops at night. We have lobsters for holidays.

t’s the time of year when many people will be enjoying pools, beaches, and boating. Nowhere is this truer than in South Florida – where aquatic recreation is really available year-round. With all of the easy-access to water here, it’s especially important for residents and visitors to practice water-safe habits. In Broward County, drowning is the leading cause of death in children before the age of four. These tragedies almost invariably result from a lack of adult supervision – sometimes just for the briefest moment. Infants face the greatest risk around the home: bathtubs, toilets, buckets, decorative ponds, and kiddie pools. Babies can never be left alone in the tub – not even for a second. Toddlers are especially vulnerable wherever pools, lakes, and canals are nearby. Again, it only takes a moment for a small child to wander away from a distracted caretaker and into an unsupervised area with water. Parents and all other caretakers must be committed to keeping a constant line of sight with the children they are watching, to having children within arms-reach whenever they are in or around the water, and to maintaining focused attention on the task. There is no substitute for active adult supervision. Too-often, parents mistakenly assume it is ok to step away for a minute. They think they will hear something if their child needs help, and that they will have enough time to react. But drowning is usually silent, and it happens quickly. While parents and caretakers must strive for impeccable vigilance, they should also take a ‘wholistic’ approach to drowning prevention, using multiple layers of protection: ▸▸ Supervision - Always have a designated, responsible adult whose undivided attention is on the children – not only when swimming, but whenever access to water is a possibility. Children must be taught from an early age never to go near the water without an adult. ▸▸ Barriers – Use child-proof locks on all doors, door alarms, pool fences, and self-closing and self-latching gates. Use them consistently, with routine checks throughout the day. ▸▸ Preparation - Learn CPR and keep proper safety gear, including a phone, life-vests, hook, & ring buoy, near the pool. If a child is missing, always check the pool first. ▸▸ Swimming and Water Safety Lessons – Even the youngest children can learn skills to help them to be safer in and around the water. Caregivers should learn to swim as well. Numerous, inexpensive options for swimming and water-safety lessons are now available locally. The City of Sunrise offers free and low-cost swim lessons to residents; visit www.sunrisefl.gov or call 954-747-4600 for more information. Free swim lessons are also available through the YMCA of Broward County SPLASH program; visit www.ymcabroward.org or call 954-334-9622. Additionally, Broward County’s SWIM Central program offers $40 vouchers towards swim lessons for children four years of age and under, and vouchers for adult lessons are available through the SWIMS Foundation. Go to www.watersmartbroward.org to request a voucher, where you will also find a wealth of information and resources for all things related to water-safety. For information about CPR training, please call 954-746-3465.

Skittles is a 6-year-old Tabby. Her favorite person is her human mommy, Susan. Her favorite toy is a little moose. The frisky feline likes reusable shopping bags, but definitely dislikes the exterminator. She loves being combed, and was last seen sleeping on the reusable bags that she loves so much.

ASK THE EXPERT
BY DR. FABIENNE ACHILLE
E
ven with the passage of time, many women still retain their youthful energy and enthusiasm, but post-menopausal changes can affect a woman’s quality of life in unexpected ways. Now, there is a gentle laser therapy that can help millions of women who are silently suffering. What is the MonaLisa Touch? The MonaLisa Touch is a gentle laser therapy that delivers controlled energy to the vaginal wall tissue. It restores vaginal health by generating new collagen, elastin and vascularization. The MonaLisa Touch was first available outside the U.S. where thousands of patients have been treated worldwide. How does it work? The MonaLisa Touch uses gentle laser energy that is delivered via a side-firing probe inserted into the vaginal canal. A two-part pulse targets surface (epithelial) tissue and deep (lamina propria) tissue to promote vaginal mucosal revitalization. What clinical trials have been conducted on the MonaLisa Touch? A multisite study was conducted by Dr. Mickey Karram, Director of Fellowship Program on Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Dr. Eric Sokol, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Stanford University Medical Center. The trial assessed the use of CO2 fractional laser therapy on 30 women with vaginal health issues due to natural or induced menopause. All of the patients in the trial were treated with the MonaLisa Touch laser therapy. The results were: ▸▸ Overwhelmingly positive and immediate results ▸▸ ·Highly statistically significant improvement in symptoms after first treatment ▸▸ Escalation of progress with each subsequent treatment In addition to the multisite study, there are currently eight published studies with six ongoing studies. Does the procedure hurt? The procedure requires no anesthesia. Some patients may experience some discomfort the first time the probe is inserted, but the actual treatment is not painful. Many patients report that it feels like a gentle vibration. How long does it take? Patients receive three treatments, spaced six weeks apart, which each take less than five minutes to perform. When will I see results? Most patients feel improvement after the very first treatment, although the procedure calls for three treatments that are generally spaced over an 18-week period. How long does it last? Patients should expect to come back annually for a maintenance treatment. The doctor will determine if follow up treatments are required. What are my limitations after the procedure is done? Patients should refrain from sexual activity for two to three days. Your doctor will determine a post-procedure regimen that is right for you. For which patients is this treatment appropriate? The MonaLisa Touch is appropriate for any female suffering from issues from a decline in estrogen, as well as those who are experiencing symptoms as a result of a hysterectomy or breast cancer treatments. Is this procedure safe for women with breast cancer? Yes, the MonaLisa Touch therapy is particularly well suited for patients who cannot, or prefer not to receive estrogen therapy. Will the procedure be covered by insurance? No processing code has been established.
