T

he hot, sticky days of summer are here again. The sun is beat-

ing down upon us from above, cooling off ever so slightly with our daily afternoon rain shower. As the kids finish their last few days of school and the seniors celebrate at their graduation parties, it’s time to seriously think about summer activities and vacations. Regardless of whether you take short trips to the Keys, enjoy the magic of Orlando, fly off to far-away destinations, or if your kids simply enjoy the lazy summer days together with their friends in a local summer camp, this is the time when family memories – and pictures – are made. It is the million little things you do with your children, your family and your friends, which create memories that will last a lifetime. Never-ending work, studying for the next school year, or preparing for college can wait a tiny bit. Now is the time to enjoy life and each other. And don’t forget your dad on Father’s Day!

Libraries Offer Summer Full of Fun By Julie Levin

S

chool is out this month, and Plantation’s libraries are ready

to keep kids busy with a series of fun and free events all summer long. Both the Helen B. Hoffman Library and West Regional Library have a line-up of activities scheduled for children of almost of all ages. “We want kids to remember that reading can be for fun. If they are only reading for homework, they might not read books they might actually enjoy,” said Shari Wolf, the Assistant Head of Youth Services at the West Regional Library. This summer, all events and activities at the West Regional Library will fall under the theme “Dream Big!” “All of our story times will be related to dreams, or nighttime, even things that go bump in the night,” said Wolf. Organizers are expecting as many as 1,000 kids to take part in the activities, which will kick-off June 9, with Mr. Brian and the Boppets. Wolf says it is a wild musical rock and bop puppet show followed by sign up for the summer reading program. After they sign up, kids will get a game board, and as they read, they move along the board and get prizes. Kids can read any book they want and every Saturday there will be a new special program to entertain them. “If they love reading, it will improve their reading skills and encourage them to read on,” said Wolf. Programs will include The Dream Big Show with Holy Cow, and special guests Mr. Pig and Bully the Bull, Millennia, the Muse. Game Day, Drive in Movie, Ceramics Creation, Campfire Tales and Treats and a special puppet show. The library will also offer its “Own the Night” series of summer events for teens. There will be book club events, book chats, cooking demonstrations, movie parties, and their on-going chess club. The special summer programming will include an “Interactive Murder Mystery”, where teens will solve a murder mystery as they try to guess who the “killer” is. There will also be a program called Duct Tape Works of Art: Create Your

Own Wallet, where teen entrepreneur Devin Paul will shows how to make your own duct tape wallet & talk about how he started his thriving business. In July, teens are invited to learn about Steampunk Jewelry, and design one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces. There will also be a summer reading program at the Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library. The kick-off for their summer program, known as “Dive into Reading” will be held Monday, June 11. There will be activities, a DJ, face-painting and other fun. The events begin at 7:00 PM. The summer program is for all ages, but kids who want to take part in the projects have to be independent readers. The Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library is located at 501 N. Fig Tree Lane in Plantation. For more information, call 954-797-2145. The West Regional Library is located at 8601 W. Broward Boulevard in Plantation. Join the July 4th Parade! By Julie Levin

E

veryone loves a parade and now is your chance to be a part

of one. The City of Plantation is looking for participants for their annual Independence Day Parade, and they are encouraging everyone to get involved. “It can be individuals, it can be families, it can be businesses, non-profit groups. It’s just anything and everything,” said Cheryl Greenberg, the Publicity Coordinator for the City of Plantation. The parade will be held Wednesday, July 4th and Greenberg is anticipating as many as 50-60 entries to take part in the two-hour parade. While many of the entries are Plantation-based, many are also from the surrounding communities. Entries have to be in by June 15, and then it is simply a matter of coming up with a float idea. While some are elaborate, others can be nothing more than a sign on a car, or a family walking and holding their own sign. The city does not supply the signage or method of transportation. “Once you fill out the application, it is just a matter of deciding how to decorate and then showing up,” said Greenberg. The parade line-up begins at 7:30 a.m. on the 4th with the parade stepping off at 9:00 a.m. All entries will begin at the intersection of Broward Boulevard and N.W. 46th Avenue and then wind along the route which is approximately two-hours long. The parade will end at Plantation City Hall where awards will be given out in five different categories, including “Best Float”, “Best Motorized” and “Best Walking Unit”. In order to participate in the 2012 parade, participants must have their entry information to the city on or before June 15th. That will be followed up by correspondence from the city letting participants know where they have to go and at what time. Greenberg says it is a great way for everyone to show their patriotism and city pride, and it is free. “It is fun and everyone likes it, especially when they have children with them,” she said.

The city’s Independence Day festivities won’t end after the parade. There will also include a concert in Central Park with the group “Classic Rock” which will be followed by a beautiful fireworks display. To receive an entry form or for additional information, call 954-452-2506.

Landscaping Awards Show Off City’s Best Greenery By Julie Levin

t seemed only fitting that a recent

award ceremony honoring those who had done their part to help beautify Plantation’s landscape be held not indoors, but outside amongst the trees. That’s why organizers held the 28th Annual P.L.A.N.T. Awards at the Botanical II Arboretum along N. Bel Air Drive May 11. The Arboretum is a collective of different trees, each boasting its own flowers, leaves, level of shade and size. “For each of you coming to receive an award today, you have created much of the same with your businesses and in your communities and the groups you represent. We appreciate that as residents and employees of this city,” said Suzanne Newman, with Plantation’s Design, Landscape and Construction Management team. City Councilman Peter Tingom, Mayor Diane Veltri Bendekovic and Danny Ezzeddine read an Arbor Day Proclamation. P.L.A.N.T. is an acronym for “Plantation Landscaping Award for Nurturing Our Town.” The support they have lent, for the outcome they envision for awards were developed to show special appreciation to how perfect it is to be outside amongst these trees, where businesses, institutions, and properties for their outstanding there are no walls to confine, floors to separate or doors to landscape designs and maintenance programs. Heated Competition at 1st Annual Plantation Firematics Competition By Julie Levin

P

lantation’s firefighters recently put their skills to the test

during a first-of-its-kind city competition that is set to give at least three fire stations bragging rights for the year. The stations squared off for the city’s 1st Annual Firematics Competiton, which was held April 7th. The event was designed with the goal of honing the firefighters skills, while also providing a training day unlike any other. “It’s a way they can let their hair down, kick back, and still get our monthly training done,” said Fire Chief Joe Harris. To break the monotony of monthly training, Plantation’s fire chiefs created the Firematics Competition with an eye towards making at least one training day fun and exciting. Each station was asked to form a team, and even the chiefs and the rescue division formed teams. All eight teams competed in seven different events, all of which were timed. The events included a dry hose roll, deploying a charged hose line and knocking down a target, replacing a broken length of hose, changing one hose line into two, a barrel push, old fashioned bucket brigade, and a hoseline tug

of war. “Teams practiced for weeks to get ready for this,” said battalion chief Don Todd, who helped organize the competition. “Even firefighters who weren’t on the team practiced with the team. Everyone got involved at some level.” Firematics competitions are nothing new to the Plantation Fire Department. They are conducted throughout Florida and Plantation’s competition team has been State Champions eight times. The April 7th event was the first time the city’s firefighters competed against each other. More than 130 Plantation firefighters took part with friends and family invited to cheer them on. Afterwards, everyone was invited to attend a barbecue. “This was an experiment to see how it would be received,” added Chief Harris. “I think we’ll make it an annual event.” The top three stations were: 1st place: Station Three 2nd place: Station Four 3rd place: Station Six

New Sign for the Times By Julie Levin

P

lantation residents and City leaders came together recently

to celebrate a new program that could pave the way for new decorative streets signs in other City neighborhoods. The gathering was held at Jacaranda Cay on April 16th, where residents in the long-standing neighborhood formally dedicated close to 20 brand new decorative street signs on City streets servicing their neighborhood. “We wanted to do something to differentiate our community and add some value to it,” said Jeff Tieger, the President of the Jacaranda Cay Homeowners’ Association. The dedication was attended by residents, as well as a raft of City officials, marking the culmination of months of negotiations between the Jacaranda Cay HOA and the City. The residents had seen similar decorative street signs in the Historical District and wanted to replicate them in their neighborhood. They called the City to see if it was possible, but learned the signs in the Historical District had been part of a onetime grant. Continuing with similar signage in other neighborhoods was not considered at the time, which prompted the City and Jacaranda Cay to work together to find a solution. City staff researched a way for Jacaranda Cay and other qualifying neighborhoods to be able to install decorative street signs on City streets serving their neighborhood. Months of research and discussion led to the development of the City of Plantation Decorative Street Signage Program where the City and a neighborhood with a structured HOA The new street signs in Jacaranda Cay can enter into a formal agreement to intro-

duce decorative street signs in the neighborhood. The agreement authorizes the replacement of standard City stop signs and street name signs with new Plantation signature decorative street signage in return for the neighborhood’s agreement to pay for and install the new signage. The Agreement also requires the neighborhood to maintain the new signage. The Program is available exclusively for HOA-structured neighborhoods that are serviced by City roadways, not private neighborhoods with their own private roadways. “Because of the efforts of Jacaranda Residents, City officials and Cay and the city, we now have something that is representatives from the structured and is ready to go forward if another Beautiful Mailbox Company gathered together to qualified neighborhood comes to us. It is ready dedicate the new signage to go,” said Butler. According to Tieger, Jacaranda Cay paid an estimated $19,000 for the signs, which can also be customized for each neighborhood, as long as it is in line with the established signage design limitations already in place for the program. The signs were crafted by the Beautiful Mailbox Company. “If a neighborhood has a specific logo or theme, we can do custom castings or add the community name on a separate casting or blade,” said Sheri Corsetti, the Vice President of the company. Councilwoman Sharon Moody-Uria said the program is a win for all involved. “It is a beautiful project that they did. When neighborhoods come together and want to enhance their own community, that is a great thing for the City,” she said

Understanding Chest Pain

Dental Specialist Center of South Florida

By Wendy S. Levenson EdD, RN Director of Education, Westside regional Medical Center

T

his year, about 6 million American adults will come to an

emergency department with chest pain. Some of them will have full-blown heart attacks; a few will have life-threatening blood clots in their lungs. The majority will have acid reflux, muscle strain, or anxiety. If you are having severe pain, crushing, squeezing, or pressure in your chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or if the pain moves into your neck, left shoulder, arm, or jaw, go immediately to a hospital emergency department. Do not drive yourself. Call 911 for emergency transport. Any part of the chest can be the cause of the pain including the heart, lungs, esophagus, muscle, bone, and skin. The following is a description of some of the causes of chest pain. ▸▸ Heart attack: A heart attack occurs when blood flow to the arteries that supply the heart becomes blocked. With decreased blood flow, the muscle of the heart does not receive enough oxygen. This can cause damage, deterioration, and death of the heart muscle. ▸▸ Angina: Angina is caused by blockage or narrowing of the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart. ▸▸ Aortic dissection: The aorta is the main artery that supplies blood to the vital organs of the body. Dissection means a tear in the inner lining of the aorta. ▸▸ Pulmonary embolism: A pulmonary embolus is a blood clot in one of the major blood vessels that supplies the lungs. ▸▸ Spontaneous pneumothorax: Often called a collapsed lung, this condition occurs when air enters the saclike space between the chest wall and the lung tissue. ▸▸ Perforated viscus: A perforated viscus is a hole or tear in the wall of any area of the gastrointestinal tract. ▸▸ Acute pericarditis: This is an inflammation of the pericardium, which is the sac that covers the heart. ▸▸ Pneumonia: Pneumonia is an infection of the lung tissue. Chest pain occurs because of inflammation to the lining of the lungs. ▸▸ Disorders of the esophagus: Chest pain from esophageal disorders can be an alarming symptom because it often mimics chest pain from a heart attack. ▸▸ Acid reflux disease occurs when acidic digestive juices flow backward from the stomach into the esophagus. The resulting heartburn is sometimes experienced as chest pain. ▸▸ Esophagitis is an inflammation of the esophagus. ▸▸ Esophageal spasm is defined as excessive, intensified, or uncoordinated contractions of the smooth muscle of the esophagus. ▸▸ Costochondritis: This is an inflammation of the cartilage between the ribs. Pain is typically located in the mid-chest, with intermittently dull and sharp pain that may be increased with deep breaths, movement, and deep touch. ▸▸ Herpes zoster: Also known as shingles, this is a reactivation of the viral infection that causes chickenpox. The success of Westside Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Department is very dependent on the extremely talented, dedicated individuals that care for their patients, as well as the dedicated staff and administration who support our emergency department team. Westside Regional Medical Center appreciates the community’s support in trusting us with their care.

Woman’s Club Crafts Butterflies to Remember Children of the Holocaust By Julie Levin

T

hey are simple, colorful and creative, but the butterflies

hanging from a small tree displayed at a recent meeting of the GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club are rich in meaning. The butterflies, handcrafted in a variety of textures and styles, will all become part of a massive memorial to the 1.5 million Jewish children who were killed during the Holocaust. Club members and friends hand-decorated the butterflies in order to send them to Holocaust Museum Houston as part of its upcoming Memorial Butterfly Exhibit. The butterflies will eventually comprise a breath-taking exhibit currently scheduled to open in the Spring of 2014. The museum is attempting to collect 1.5 million handmade butterflies, in order to honor each of the children that died. An estimated 900,000 have already been sent in. To reach their goal, they have reached out to individuals and groups, urging everyone to create as many handmade butterflies as possible. The Plantation Woman’s Club learned of the project at a GFWC convention. A club member in Pinellas County had seen the project in a craft magazine

and brought it to the member’s attention. From there, clubs nationwide began taking on their own projects. The members of the Plantation club created 40 butterflies, and will keep half of them here for local Holocaust projects. “The Butterfly project is a continued memorial, especially to the children whose lives were taken due to those episodes in time when humans become insane,” said Helen Ackerman, the group’s Publicity Chairperson. Created in 1949, The Plantation Woman’s Club is the oldest civic organization in the City of Plantation. They are a non-profit service organization that supports a wide variety of charitable, educational and civic projects. All club proceeds from events and projects go to scholarships, education and community improvement. For more information go to:www.plantationwomansclubgfwc.com.

got allergies?

Live a normal, symptom-free life WITHOUT the use of avoidance, pills or shots

At the age of 5 years old, my son, Scottie, was unable to attend birthday parties, could not participate in sporting events, and felt left out of enjoying his childhood due to chronic illnesses of food and environmental factors. Since he began his treatments with Dr. Popkin he is enjoying a healthy asthmafree childhood and can participate in sports. The best news is, that for the first time, he can go to camp and enjoy foods without having allergic reactions. No longer needing to live on a special diet has allowed me and my family to finally enjoy life. To me, this is a miracle! I am so thankful for finding Dr. Popkin and to experience NAET, a natural method for eliminating allergy symptoms. - Susan G.

fun this summer, keep in mind that thieves and burglars don’t take vacations from criminal activity. Stay vigilant about protecting your home, your belongings and your identity. Don’t let crime ruin your summer fun. The best advice is to stay alert. Be aware of what’s going on in your neighborhood. Never hesitate to report suspicious activity to law enforcement. If you notice activity at your neighbors’ house when you know they are away on vacation, call 911 immediately. Your tip might be the one that helps BSO detectives catch up to an otherwise elusive burglar. If you notice someone lurking around cars in a parking lot, phone in that tip. If you recognize a suspect from a surveillance video, call Crime Stoppers of Broward County. You may remain anonymous, and Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest. Teaming up and keeping the lines of communication open between law enforcement and observant residents is the best defense against criminals.

At home, lock your doors and don’t forget to arm your alarm systems if you have them. When you are out and about, lock your car doors and never keep valuables in plain view. It only takes a few seconds for a car burglar to grab your purse, wallet or cell phone from your car while you step away to walk your dog, pay for gas or put flowers at a gravesite. Don’t make it easier for criminals by leaving a door unlocked. Thinking of making some repairs before a hurricane approaches? Be wary of unlicensed contractors. They might take your money and run, do sub-standard work or have a criminal history. To make sure the workers in your home are licensed, visit the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation’s website at www. myfloridalicense.com. Be suspicious of anyone who shows up uninvited at your door. Sometimes, criminals knock first, and they can be very charming. They might ask for a drink, for directions, to use the phone or say they were sent to do work at your house. These are common tactics of scam artists and thieves. If you weren’t expecting them, don’t let them in. Make your house look occupied when you are out. Leave a television or radio on, or set some lamps on timers. If you go away, stop your newspaper delivery and have someone collect your mail. You can even deter burglars with your landscaping. Plant some thorny bushes under windows that might make an illegal entry difficult. Trim back foliage that might block the view of your home from the street, and add some outdoor lighting so that criminals can’t operate unnoticed. Once you take the necessary precautions to protect yourself, your belongings and your family, you can relax and enjoy a fun and safe summer.

Plantation Girl Scouts Help Battle Childhood Hunger By Julie Levin

T

hree Plantation Girl Scouts Troops came together recently

to use their combined skills to help raise money to battle childhood hunger. Thanks to their remarkable success selling Girl Scout cookies, the troops from the South East Florida’s Great Earth Service Unit in Plantation were invited to take part in a local Great American Bake Sale event. “The 17 girls in our troop, number 10442, sold just over 10,000 boxes of cookies,” said Troop Leader Patty Kopleman. The incredible cookie success was noted by Plantation resident Plantation Troops 10442 and Troop 10963 Sharmila (Shar) Melwani whose get directions for Shar Melwani business is based on cookies. Melwani is the owner of Cookies by Shar, a renowned South Florida specialty cookie company based in Davie. For the past five years, she has also taken part in the Great American Bake Sale and this year co-chaired the local event at the Aventura Mall along with Chef Allen Susser and Chef Timon Balloo. The Great American Bake Sale is a national campaign that mobilizes Americans to end childhood hunger in America by holding bake sales in their communities. Proceeds go to Share Our Strength, a national organization that works to make sure no kid in America grows up hungry. At the May 6 event, local bakeries, restaurants, pastry chefs, marketplaces and hotels offered samples of their tasty treats, priced between $2 and $5. Guests were able to use tickets to pay for their items and also had the opportunity to vote for the best baked

good. The event also included chef demonstrations, live entertainment, raffles, and a cookie and cupcake decorating station for kids. That’s where the three Plantation troops came in. Each of the groups decorated a cake based on their interpretation of the theme of the event “No Kid Hungry”, which was judged by celebrity chefs. With their families cheering them on, Kopelman’s troop took first place, 2nd place went to Troop 10963 and 3rd place went to Troop 10893. “It was our first year and I would love to see the Girl Scouts get more involved Shar Melwani, Chef Allen Susser and Chef next year with more troops from all over Timon Balloo look over the cake entries pitching in. I think it was so great for the girls to understand about helping with the message of ending childhood hunger,” said Kopelman. The prizes included 1st place AMC movie party at the Aventura AMC theater, 2nd place tickets to the Museum of Discovery & Science, and 3rd place received a cupcake decorating party from Ready Set Cupcake. Three Reasons Why You Should Hire a Law Firm to Complete a Successful Short Sale By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

R

FREE DVD

ecently our law firm has been retained by numerous clients

who are being sued by their former lender after completing a short sale of their homes. This is called a deficiency judgment action. In other words, the lender sues the homeowner for the difference between the amount owed under the loan and the amount for which the short sale was approved. In every one of these cases, the homeowner was not represented by an attorney during the short sale process, but instead, chose to allow a realtor to manage the entire process, including the negotiation of the deficiency. Most realtors, however, are solely interested in “closing the deal” and receiving their commission, not in the most complete and favorable outcome for the seller. Here are three reasons why you should hire a law firm to complete a successful short sale. Avoid the Dreaded Deficiency Judgment. The principal reason to hire a law firm to handle a short sale is to avoid any deficiency judgment action by your lender after the short sale is completed. A qualified law firm, like the Arcia Law Firm, regularly negotiates “deficiency waivers” with lenders, and demands that the proper language and releases be included in the short sale approval letter in order to ensure that our clients do not have to contend with the costly defense of a deficiency action or have to file bankruptcy in the future. Lenders Negotiate Differently with a Law Firm. It is no secret that lenders behave differently when a law firm is involved in the short sale negotiation than when dealing with a realtor. Lender representatives know that an attorney understands the law and its implications for his/her client, and will not simply accept as true any unwritten promises or suggestions by the lender’s short sale negotiator. The end result of a short sale negotiation using a law firm is that the terms of the deal are more clearly outlined with no room by the lender to later change the terms. Quickly Identify and Clear Title Defects. The short sale process may be stalled or blocked altogether if issues arise with any liens or title defects on the property being sold. As a licensed title agent with Chicago Title, the Arcia Law Firm can quickly identify any title issues delaying a short sale, order a lien search, seek an underwriter title opinion, and clear any title defects in order to promptly complete most short sales. Our law firm also conducts the actual closing in order to ensure that our clients’ rights are fully protected from start to finish during the short sale process. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy when you make an appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our legal team. You may contact the Arcia Law Firm at 1-800-770-7102 to schedule your free consultation. You may also visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information about the Firm, our staff and credentials, detailed articles, informative videos, and to make your appointment online.

Today, gifted orthodontic specialists shape dazzling smiles creating optimal form and function. Orthodontics have come a long way in just a few thousand years. Children, teenagers, young adults, middle-aged men and women and seniors are all taking advantage of the simplicity that distinguishes today’s orthodontics. K-Kids Present Kiwanis Charter to Elementary School By Julie Levin

A

new project designed to instill the importance of community

service in elementary-aged children has taken an important new step. The Kiwanis Club of Plantation recently held its “Family Day” at Plantation Park Elementary School. The main goal; letting the school’s new K-Kids Club present their official Kiwanis Charter to the school’s administration. “This is a club for children who want to be involved in a community activity, where they get to decide the projects they’ll be doing to help out,” said Jim McGonigle, the Treasurer of the Kiwanis Club of Plantation. The K-Kids received their charter welcoming them into the Kiwanis family in February, but waited until the “Family Day” to formally present it to Plantation Park School Principal Julie Gittelman. They were supported by members of the Kiwanis Club of Plantation, as well as members of the Kiwanis Key Clubs at area high schools. K-Kids is a national Kiwanis program and is the largest student-led, communityservice organization for elementary school students nationwide. This is the first time it has been introduced in Plantation and this year 15 students in grades 3-5 at Plantation Park have signed up to be a part of it. They meet once a week, under the guidance of Kiwanis Club members and South Plantation High School Key Club members. One of the first projects launched was a school-wide cleanup of graffiti and foul words defacing school property. “We want to keep our school nice so people will want to come,” said Zane Hight, 11, a 5th grader who is the President of the K-Kids. Other projects have included making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the needy, writing letters to service men and women and writing letters to encourage their fellow students during the FCAT exams. McGonigle says K-Kids provides young students with the experience necessary to

go on to Kiwanis service clubs in middle school, known as Builders Clubs, and then to high school Key Clubs. The Kiwanis Club of Plantation has Key Clubs at Plantation High, South Plantation High, and the American Heritage School and McGonigle says interest is growing. “We’ve got three other elementary schools wanting us to start a club next year, and one middle school looking for a Builders Club,” he said.

between Palm Beach and Miami. Plantation was a small, growing community, a home community where I felt good about raising my children.

7)Please tell us about your training and background. I am a 1983 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. I studied at Penn as an undergraduate and received a BS in Physical Chemistry and Biochemistry, graduating cum laude. In addition, I have done a hospital-based residency that has enabled me to offer many specialty services that most general dentists refer to a specialist.

8) What do enjoy doing when you are not in the office? I am single and enjoy a wide variety of hobbies, including wind and kite surfing, skateboarding, tennis ( I played junior USLTA), riding my motorcycles, working out, martial arts, guitar and gourmet cooking.

9) What do you like most about what you do? I like helping people with my unique skills and creating happy patients. When I retire, I plan to join “Doctors Without Borders” and bring my skills to the less fortunate around the world.

1) Please tell us about Gentle Family Dentistry. Gentle Family Dentistry is an exclusive dental practice treating general dental problems, family dental issues (orthodontics and decay control), and a full-service dental treatment center for cosmetic dentistry and all other restorative needs that our patients require. We are here to treat routine procedures such as cleanings, emergency needs and infections of dental origin. Creating a Legacy

Plantation residents Wendy and Lewis Druss (top left) and Carrie and David Schulman (bottom left) were among those treated to a special reception recently by the Jewish Community Foundation of the Jewish Federation of Broward County. The organization treated its Legacy Society members to a presentation by Rabbi Elie Kaunfer, co-founder and executive director of Mechon Hadar. The Legacy Society includes more than 300 members representing approximately $50 million in current and deferred endowment gifts to the Jewish Community.

Ribbon Cutting

A grand opening ceremony was held recently for a new business in Plantation. Any Lab Test Now Plantation, located at 8367 W. Sunrise Boulevard, held a ribbon cutting which was attended by City Council members,as well as members of the Plantation Chamber of Commerce.

Rotary Family Day

The Rotary Club of Plantation continued its celebration of 50 years of service to the community with a Family Day April 22 at Heritage Park. Also on hand Scott and Dena Mangioneand children (bottom right). They are the son and daughter-in-law of Rotary member and past president Tom Mangione.

150 Years of Love

With their sixth World Series win in 1937, the New York Yankees started their record as the team with the most World Series wins. But two couples living at the Covenant Village of Florida retirement community in Plantation started winning streaks of their own that year—marriages that would last 75 years. Paul and Betty Schulhof (first and second from left) teamed up in Chicago on May 29, 1937. John and Georgiana Shaw (first and second from right) tied the knot in Westfield, N.J., May 8, 1937. In another streak, the two couples have lived at Covenant Village a total of 45 years.

Twilight Concert

Hundreds of people made themselves comfortable on the lawn at Midtown 24 just behind the Fountains Shoppes of Distinction for “The Celebrate Plantation-Twilight Free Concert & Expo” April 20. The Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce Event, sponsored by Plantation General Hospital and Westside Regional Medical Center, had food, demonstrations and featured the music of “Sekond Nature”.

40

Anniversary Walk

Members of Ramat Shalom Synagogue in Plantation gather at the starting line to take part in a 3.6 mile run/ walk through Plantation Acres recently. The event was just one part of the commemoration of the temple’s 36th anniversary. They also hosted a birthday party for members, a Cantorial Concert and more.

Dramatic Proposal

Local director/DP/FX artist Gary Cole got down on bended knee and surprised girlfriend Katrina Keller of Plantation with a marriage proposal before a performance of Florida Grand Opera’s Roméo et Juliette at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts recently. Using the ruse of arranging a backstage tour of the Amaturo Theater, Cole slipped away as Katrina continued the tour to the stage where she found Cole seated at a grand piano and serenading her. Keller brought down the house when she said yes!
