Wishing You a Happy New Year!

A

s the holiday season comes to a close and

we return to our daily work routines, the Happy New Year toasts slowly fade away. We are trying to recover from all the festivities of the season, the get-togethers with friends and families, and the holiday feasts. Now we wonder what the year 2014 has in store for us. On behalf of my staff, I am happy to announce that we are once again growing our family of publications. Starting in March, we will be expanding our local community new magazines to reach an additional 20,000 homes and businesses in the City of Sunrise. The new Sunrise Town Times will provide our readers with truly local school and community news while allowing local and regional businesses to reach the residents of that community. While we are making resolutions to better ourselves, we should remember that the most important improvement to our daily lives is to spend more quality time with our family and friends. To enjoy each other’s company and companionship, to truly listen to each other’s concerns, and to offer understanding and a helping hand are resolutions all of us can achieve. Have a Happy New Year from all of us at Our City Weston and the Town Times magazines. Sincerely, Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Longtime “Journey” Lead Vocalist to Perform in Plantation By Julie Levin

F

or a third

year in a row, Plantation residents will have the opportunity to enjoy a great concert, while also helping to care for at-risk dogs in our community. Steve Augeri, a former lead vocalist with the rock band “Journey” will be performing in a one-night concert in Plantation February 8th. The net proceeds from the concert are earmarked to benefit Have a Heart Inc., a non-profit volunteer canine rescue in South Florida that rescues unloved, unwanted and homeless dogs. “We are looking to raise the funds that will help keep the shelter facility operational so that we can help house pets until they are found new homes,” said Susan Fischer, a Plantation resident and chairperson of the event. For a third year, Fischer is partnering with Have a Heart to host the concert at the clubhouse in the Hawks Landing community. In its first year, close to 250 people packed the clubhouse for a performance by three members of the Little River Band, as well as Bad Company’s lead singer Brian Howe. Last year, music lovers danced to the tunes of the Stray Cat’s Lee Rocker. This year, the spotlight falls on Augeri, the former front man and lead vocalist with Journey from 1998-2006. During his eight-year tenure, he recorded three albums with Journey and helped keep alive classics like “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Separate Ways”, “Wheel in the Sky,” “Anyway You Want it,” “Open Arms,” “Who’s Cryin’ Now” and more. Augeri is now on tour as a solo act. The proceeds will go towards Have a Heart, which rescues homeless dogs and

keeps them safe, healthy and socialized until new homes can be found. In addition to needing homes, many of the rescues are also in need of medical attention. Because Have a Heart does not receive public funding, they stay afloat primarily through private donations. The proceeds from the first two concerts helped the group expand to a five-acre rental property that provides space to comfortably house the dogs. “We take dogs from shelters, make them healthy and we don’t give up on them. We are particular about where they go and try to find them the perfect home,” said Janice Green, the founder of Have a Heart, Inc. Fischer encourages music lovers to come out to help support a local, private pet rescue, and keep the facility going. “What they are basically getting is the knowledge that they are helping to rescue a pet in need, as well as enjoying a wonderful evening among friends,” she said. The 3rd Annual Have a Heart Charity Concert will be held February 8 at the Hawks Landing Clubhouse, located at 500 Hawks Landing Circle in Plantation, beginning at 7 p.m. The $150 event price includes the concert, drink tickets, food, live auction and pre-show with Bushwood, a local rock band. Reservations must be made in advance and are limited to the first 230 people. Payment will not be accepted at the door. For more information, call Susan Fischer at 954-465-0923. and joy of the holiday season, Plantation proved once again that “everyone loves a parade.” One of our areas most beloved holiday traditions once again rolled through the city November 23, helping to get residents in the holiday spirit. Thousands of people packed the streets for the 45th Annual “It’s a Wonderful Life in Plantation” Holiday Parade. Put on by the Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce and the City of Plantation Parks and Recreation Department, the annual parade Santa Claus made an appearance to help kick-off the holiday season moved westbound from the intersection of Broward Boulevard and 441/State Road 7, turned north on NW 69th Avenue, then west on 4th Street to City Hall. Thousands of people lined the route cheering on friends, children, and co-workers representing all walks of life in Plantation. There were City leaders, businesses, civic and school groups, marching bands and plenty of entertainment. As always, the parade ended with a visit from Santa Claus who met with youngsters at the Fountains Shopping Center. Chamber organizers say the parade is not only a wonderful holiday tradition, but also a great way to support small local businesses.

the GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club hosted its 4th annual Fashion Show. More than 100 people attended the yearly luncheon and show November 9 at the Deicke Auditorium, located at 5701 Cypress Road. Six fashion-forward club members took on the role of models for the show, wearing fashions and accessories provided by Chico’s on Las Olas Boulevard. Guests contributed $25 for the show, which also included raffles and a buffet lunch provided by Kristof’s Kafe of Davie. Those that liked what they saw on the fashion runway also had a chance to purchase the clothes, with Chico’s contributing 10 percent of all sales to the Club. Westfield Broward Set to Reveal New Look and State-of-the-Art Entertainment Complex By Julie Levin

L

ong a familiar fixture as a

shopping destination in Central Broward County, Westfield Broward is set to show off a whole new look. After months of renovation, the mall is scheduled to reveal plenty of new amenities January 17, including a brand new entertainment center. With a new theater, restaurants and more, the center is designed to be a fun and welcoming environment for everyone who visits. Recently Andrew Martineau, a Marketing Representative with Westfield Broward, answered a few commonly asked questions about the center.

Westfield Broward has just undergone a major transformation. Can you tell us what’s new at the mall? With an updated transformation of the existing center, Westfield is evolving the mall into a neighborhood entertainment-focused shopping destination, where cultures from around the world can shop, dine, play, enjoy and be celebrated in a fun and interactive environment that reflects the ethnic and economic diversity that Central Broward is best known for. The more than $39 million dollar revitalization includes a state-of-the-art Regal Cinema, new Play Space, Wall Shops, new restrooms with a family lounge, updated Dining Court and several new sit-down dining options. Please tell us more about the new entertainment complex. The new theatre facility is modern in every way, and will be equipped with Regal Premium Experience (RPX) which is state-of-theart in terms of digital sound and projection, with larger screens and upgraded seating, as well as the ability to show RealD® 3D - a new generation of digital 3D, giving moviegoers a stunningly realistic movie experience that engages the imagination, activates the senses and invites the audience not only to watch a film, but also step inside the story. Some of the unparalleled amenities movie fans will enjoy include:

▶▶ Twelve auditoriums with more than 2,400 seats. ▶▶ Regal Premium Experience

(RPX) for an unsurpassed giant screen presentation.

▶▶ Digital projection in every auditorium ensuring crystal-clear images.

▶▶ Real D 3D projection systems

for 3D enhanced presentations.

▶▶ Stadium seating providing each moviegoer an unobstructed view of the screen.

▶▶ Retractable cup holders that can move out of the way to form seats for two.

18

▶▶ Concession stands offering name-brand, highquality snacks.

▶▶ Regal Express kiosks offering customers fullyautomated ticket purchases.

▶▶ Tickets also available through the Regal Mobile App and REGmovies.com.

▶▶ Industry-leading Regal

Crown Club loyalty program with rewards for frequent moviegoers

Are there restaurants in addition to the new theater? We will have four-five new restaurants including Red Robin and The Whole Enchilada. There have been renovations to the rest of Westfield Broward too. Please tell us about some of the changes shoppers will notice. In addition to the Regal Cinema, new Play Space, family lounge, Wall Shops, new restrooms, updated Dining Court with new modern seating and several new sit-down dining options, the center has added new soft seating and interior landscaping throughout the center. Westfield Broward has been a mainstay in central Broward County for decades. Please tell us a bit about its history. Westfield Broward (previously known as the Broward Mall) is a one-level 1,000,000-squarefoot shopping mall built on what was once an empty cow pasture in the center of Broward County. It is one of the first malls to be built in Broward County and is currently owned and managed by the Westfield Group. Westfield has one of the world’s largest shopping center portfolios with 91 centers in Australia, New Zealand, United States, and the United Kingdom.

Why was it time for a renovation? The 35-year old center, although kept in immaculate condition over the years, still had some features that harkened back to when it was built in the late 70’s and the competition in the surrounding area has grown as rapidly as the area has diversified. The City of Plantation is also growing at a rapid rate and adding more amenities and areas for residents to live, work and play. It was time for the mall to evolve with the times and add amenities that would add to the lives of the residents and visitors it serves, whether it is through shopping at its blend of national & regional retailers, dining at one of its diverse restaurant selections, enjoying a movie or playing in its play space. There are often lots of local community-oriented events and performances at the mall. Is that a priority for Westfield Broward? Yes, community-oriented events are a focus for the center as we strive to become a retail locale where a multitude of cultures converge, creating an energetic atmosphere and a solid sense of community. The communal engagement of hanging out with family and friends from various cultures in a fun and safe environment that incorporates important family functions alongside quality retail stores is what differentiates Westfield Broward from its competition and creates a unique sense of place that celebrates the diversity of the community in which it resides. How many shops, department stores, specialty stores and restaurants call Westfield Broward home? Westfield Broward has four department stores, 110 specialty stores and two restaurants, with more to come. What days and hours are you open? The mall is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Department store and holiday hours vary. Is there anything else you would like to add about Westfield Broward? This renovation for the center will go a long way in evolving Westfield Broward into a neighborhood entertainment focused shopping destination, and assist with adding more of those national brands that its current and future customer base is looking for. How can shoppers find the Westfield Broward Mall? They can find us at 8000 W. Broward Blvd. Plantation FL. 33388 or phone us at 954-473-8101. Hundreds of Students, Volunteers Pitch in to Help Families in Need By Julie Levin

D

Megan Tayar works piles of donated food in the Plantation High School cafeteria at an earlier Harvest Drive. Thanks to the collection efforts of students and its feeder schools for this year’s drive, Plantation High helped to feed 161 families

espite a steady rain , the wet weather

couldn’t dampen the spirits of hundreds of volunteers helping to make sure needy families in our community were not forgotten this holiday season. More than 100 students and 50 adults came together recently to help make the Harvest Drive at Plantation High School a success. The school was again one of 12 distribution sites for this year’s Harvest Drive, the annual food drive that takes place at many schools each Thanksgiving. “I’m just so grateful for how the community comes together to help others,” said Shawn Howell, a social worker at Plantation High who oversees the local effort. The volunteers at Plantation High School put together enough bags to feed 161 local families. The goal of Harvest Drive is to provide families with a complete Thanksgiving meal and a week’s worth of grocery staples, as well as personal and household necessities. Last year, an estimated 2,000 families received supplies from Harvest Drive’s 12 different distribution sites. Just before the Thanksgiving holiday, Plantation High’s feeder schools that held food drives began dropping off their donations of non-perishable food and goods, so that students and volunteers could begin sorting the items. They converted the cafeteria into a massive grocery store, organizing hundreds of cans, bags and boxes of donated food before placing them into shopping bags for each family to bring home November 21. Powell said it was very much a community-wide effort. Even the area’s youngest kids

provided cards and napkin rings that were included in the packages. “The kids worked hard and did a great job with their collections,” she said. “The other participating schools really came through with wonderful donations as well. We had some kids from other schools come and help us with the sorting, as well as some of our special education students.” Harvest Drive began at Country Isles Elementary School in Weston in 1992. The project, led by organizers Renee Herman, Kim O’Neil and Patti Bradley, helped 35-40 families their first year. Now students from more than 150 public and private schools, churches, temples and neighborhoods have held drives and supplied the Harvest Drive with the nonperishable food that is distributed to the families just before Thanksgiving. The other distribution sites include Western High School, Pompano Beach High School, Cypress Bay High, Stranahan High, McArthur High, South Broward High, Taravella High, Glades Middle, Westglades Middle, Sunrise Middle and the Lanier James Education Center. Powell also credited members of the Plantation Rotary club and other volunteers for coming out and lending their support. She said the hard work of every student and volunteer is appreciated by the families they help. “The families we have served have been so appreciative to be recipients and I’ve been blessed to have received their hugs and thanks. I’m very proud of my Colonel family in helping me to make the Harvest Drive successful once again,” she said. For more information, visit www.HarvestdriveFlorida.com.

Plantation Skater Wins Spot on National Roller Derby Squad By Julie Levin

A

Plantation resident is about to roll into the national spotlight, playing a sport that’s is rapidly making a new name for itself. Just three years after she first took on Roller Derby, Tess Harrison is now at the top of the sport. The 26-year old is one of just 32 skaters named to Team USA. the roller derby squad that represents the U.S. in international competition. Harrison competed against 600 skaters for a spot on the squad, which will represent the USA in the 2104 World Cup. “Just to be a part of that really is awesome,” she said. “It was like a dream come true.” Since 2010, Harrison has skated for Plantation resident Tess Harrison was recently named to Team USA, the roller the Gold Coast Derby Grrls, which hosts derby team that represents the U.S. in international competition (photos its bouts at the War Memorial in Fort courtesy of Michael Hopkins Photography) Lauderdale. Harrison, who skates under the colorful name of “Baller Shot Caller” has captained the team for the past two years, a remarkably strong showing for a competitor who came to the sport in 2010 at the suggestion of a friend. While the friend didn’t stay with the sport, Harrison did and will now skate for the national squad. “I felt it was one of the biggest accomplishments I ever made because I only started training a year before the try-outs. I was determined to make it once I found out there was a Team USA,” she said. According to the Gold Coast Derby Grrls website, Roller Derby has been mak-

ing a strong comeback since 2005. Their bouts routinely drew hundreds of fans. A full-contact woman’s sport on skates that happens on an oval track, Harrison says the action is fast-paced as “jammers” try to move past the other teams blockers. “When I say full contact, it is an all-out brawl on the track,” she said. Harrison says she loves Roller Derby’s competitive nature, and despite the contact, compares the sport to a sisterhood.”After we beat each other up on a track, we all got out afterwards and get to know each other. There are no hard feelings,” she said. For those that picture the Roller Derby that used to be televised in the 70’s and featured more theatrics, than sport, Harrison says while the colorful nicknames remain, the amateur sport is serious business that requires discipline, training, and dedication. Sanctioned by a governing body--Women’s Flat Track Derby Association-- there are more than 190 national and 100 international leagues. Harrison says the sport is also under consideration for the 2020 Olympic games. If it happens, Harrison plants to be a part of it. I’m trying to keep me legs fresh and my body healthy until then, because I do want to go to the Olympics,” she said. To learn more about the team and league, visit www.goldcoastderbygrrls.com.

appy N ew Year!! Would you like to save more

money this year? Maybe earn more interest on your free checking account? How about lowering your car payment? This is a great time to get to know your local credit union. Let’s get a fresh cup of coffee and discuss the credit union difference.

What makes a credit union different from other financial institutions?

Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives, owned and operated by their members. Earnings are returned to the members in the form of lower loan rates, higher interest rates on deposits and lower fees. Credit unions are also governed by a volunteer Board of Directors elected by and from the credit union’s membership. Recent changes in federal laws and regulations have made credit unions even stronger. Research shows that credit unions remain extremely popular for over 85 million Americans. An annual consumer survey completed by The American Banker, an independent publisher, confirmed that credit unions have been the favorite among consumers since 1983.

How can I become a credit union member?

Many people believe they are not eligible to join a credit union…..not so! By current federal statute, credit unions cannot serve the general public. However, many credit unions allow you to become a member based on qualifications such as, live or work in Broward County, your employer, Professional, Postal or Federal Employee. Please call your local credit union to find out how you can qualify to become a member. Once you become a member you will always be a member, even if you move away.

Is my money safe in a credit union?

Credit unions like other financial institutions are closely regulated. The National Credit Union Administration, an agency of the federal government, insures deposits of credit union members up to $250,000.00.

Credit Unions seem to have limited locations.

Over 5,000 credit unions around the country share locations to give members convenient access to their accounts. This service is called Shared Services. Just go to the website, locate shared services, enter the zip code of where you are and the addresses of the locations closest to you will appear.

What about Technology?

Credit Union members can manage their accounts anytime and anywhere through Mobile Banking, Bill Pay, Online Banking, Direct Deposit and Zip-24, an audio response system. If you prefer personal assistance with your finances, credit unions continue to offer professional and knowledgeable staff that will be happy to assist you. Legally Speaking

Using a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Plan to Keep Your Home and Investment Properties for Much Less Than You Owe By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

M

ost consumers are familiar with a simple Chapter 7 bank-

ruptcy in which all of the debtor’s assets are liquidated and all unsecured debt (credit cards, medical debt, etc.) is wiped out. However, within a Chapter 7 bankruptcy you will not be able to modify your home loan or any other amounts owed on any investment properties. In fact, your lender has the right to continue a foreclosure process on your home during a Chapter 7 bankruptcy with permission from the court, which is always granted when the homeowner owes more than the market value of the home. Yet many consumers are unaware of the far reaching benefits of a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Unlike a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, under a Chapter 13 a debtor restructures instead of liquidating debts. Over a period of 3-5 years, a Chapter 13 debtor has the ability to repay all mortgage arrearages, late fees, escrow shortages, credit card and other unsecured debt negotiated down to about one percent (1%) of the amount owed, reduced student loan payments, IRS liens, reduced car payments. Even attorneys’ fees are paid over time as part of the Chapter 13 plan. Perhaps the most beneficial part of a Chapter 13 plan is the ability to remove all second mortgages, lines of credit and other liens (including homeowners’ association liens) from your principal residence, and to significantly reduce principal balances on investment properties. In order to qualify, the debtor must be employed, or have a regular source of income, and the amount owed for the first mortgage on your principal residence must exceed the market value of that home. As it relates to the debtor’s investment properties, under a Chapter 13 plan you are able to wipe out any second mortgages or credit lines, and reduce the principal balance of the first mortgage on each property to the current fair market value, payable at a low fixed interest rate, amortized over 15 years, through an affordable monthly payment. Once a debtor submits a Chapter 13 plan and begins to make payments, the lender cannot proceed with a foreclosure. If you owe more on your first mortgage than the fair market value of your home, have one or more additional mortgages, lines of credit or other liens on that property, and are currently employed, you may be a perfect candidate to file a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. If you also have investment properties which are upside down in value, and would like to keep them because they are generating rental income, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy is the ideal solution to resolve your mortgage crisis, instead of wasting countless hours attempting to modify your loans directly with lenders. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy when you make an appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our legal team. Rotator Cuff Repair

Arthroscopic surgery is indicated when the patient is unresponsive to conservative management protocol and has an MRI scan with findings consistent with a rotator cuff tear. Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which an examination and sometimes treatment of damage of the interior of a joint is performed using an arthroscope, a type of endoscope that is inserted into the joint through a small incision. The rehabilitation of this type of surgery is divided into a healing phase followed by a regain motion phase and strengthening phase under the supervision of a trained, licensed physical therapist. Most patients can return to unrestricted sports activities in about three to six months. Dr. Moya is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in knee and shoulder surgery. Sorting our Way Through the “Menopause Maze.” By Dr. Michele Lapayowker D.O., FACOOG

F

orties and Fabulous! We are all starting to

experience the wonders of the infamous “change of life”. What is menopause vs. post menopause vs. peri menopause? I am asked this question several times a day. Women begin to have changes in their menstrual cycle as early as in their late 30’s through their mid fifties. It is important to remember that this is different for every woman, and most importantly, a natural process. Women will frequently experience changes in their menstruation pattern, skipping cycles, bleeding more frequently, heavier or longer, and “hot flashes” or some type of temperature change. I often hear complaints of difficulty sleeping, maintaining their weight, an increase in premenstrual irritability and bloating. Many women also have questions regarding a decreased libido or desire for sex despite being in a loving and stable relationship. They complain of vaginal dryness, dry skin and thinning hair. The good news is, there are many options for women to regain their balance and improve these symptoms. While we cannot always reverse all of these symptoms, many of them can be improved and truly benefit a changing woman’s quality of life. The terms used to describe this period of change that women go through are defined generally as the transition or the menopause. The definition of menopause is a label used for a woman who has had no cycles for 12 months barring other medical issues. The average age of the menopausal woman is 51 years old. The term perimenopause refers to the 10 years prior to this point when a woman experiences many signs and symptoms. The most important part of my conversation with a woman who falls into this category is to reassure them that this is both a normal and natural process and they are likely not exaggerating their complaints. Every woman experiences this period of their lives differently. Some women may feel extreme symptoms and others may breeze through this time without noticing much change. Our ovaries are simply not producing the same levels of hormone that they did in our twenties and thirties. At the same time, women must understand that many but not all symptoms can be improved or eliminated and it takes time to see if the interventions will be effective. Believe it or not, adopting a healthy lifestyle with good nutrition, exercise and stress management is truly the first line for every woman’s defense. We then discuss proper supplementation, and the topic of hormone replacement therapy. Hormone Replacement Therapy refers to giving a synthetically or bio-identical version of the hormones that our body is no longer producing regularly. HRT deserves a formal conversation with the details of all the risks and benefits. The first step every woman should take is to have her full annual exam including a detailed medical history, physical exam, pap screening, mammogram and if indicated, a bone density exam. I then recommend baseline hormone screening with any other pertinent lab work and a visit to review all. We can then address each patient’s concerns and together create a plan to make our way through the “ menopause maze.” Dr. Michele Lapayowker is a Board certified Gynecologist serving women in Broward since 1995. What are the benefits of natural BHRT? Bio identical hormone

r. Val Manocchio and the staff at Doctors Best Weight Loss and Wellness Center help patients lose weight, live longer and enjoy healthier lives. Unlike one plan fits all clinics, they determine the cause of your weight gain and then offer you an individualized weight loss program. Many weight loss patients also take advantage of hormone balancing, testosterone replacement and cosmetic procedures.

replacement therapy (BHRT) helps patients live better, healthier and longer. Clinical studies demonstrate that natural BHRT can mitigate many of the symptoms of PMS, menopause, perimenopause and andropause. It can also lead to weight loss, improved cardiovascular function, bone health, lower cholesterol, improved sex drive, concentration, and can dramatically increase overall health and well-being.

Dr. Val Manocchio answered some commonly asked questions about Doctors Best.

“Bags N’ Stuff”

Adam Azan, a student at St. Gregory Catholic School in Plantation, created an effort called “Bags N’ Stuff” to deliver duffel bags loaded with toys, clothes, blankets and toiletries to foster children of all ages. Azan and a team of volunteers delivered 150 packed duffel bags recently to ChildNet’s Safe Place. The bags were collected and filled by 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students at the school in an effort to provide “luggage filled with love.” Photo 2: Armando Bringuier of ChildNet, and St. Gregory Catholic School student volunteers.
