t’s hard to believe that it’s February already. It

seems like just yesterday we were decorating the house for the holidays. Now it’s time to focus on another holiday – Valentine’s Day. This is the day we celebrate the special person, or people, in our lives – be that your spouse, partner or children. While we contemplate which gift we should purchase for them, we need to remember that the monetary value of a gift is a secondary notion. What’s most important is that the gift comes from the heart -- and there is no better gift than spending valuable time with the ones we love. This Valentine’s Day, be sure to give from your heart and enjoy each others company. Sincerely,

Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Plantation to Celebrate 60th Anniversary with Series of Events By Julie Levin

A

s part of the City’s upcoming Diamond

Jubilee, a new book chronicling Plantation’s first 60 years is about to make its debut. On February 7, residents will be able to get their first look at Images of America: Plantation, a brand new book which details through photos and images the distinctive stories that have shaped Plantation over the years. “It is a pictorial book which takes in everything from the very beginning up to today,” said Shirley Schuler, the Curator of the Plantation Historical Museum who authored the Plantation edition. “There are people, happenings and history by era.” The book will be launched February 7 at the Plantation Historical Museum. With its launch, it becomes part of the Images of America series, produced by Arcadia Publishing, which chronicles the history of small towns and downtowns across the country. Each title features more than 200 vintage images, which local authors and historians provide the background for. Schuler, who has lived in Plantation since 1964, led a team of volunteers that poured over thousands of photos that would best tell Plantation’s history. One section shows the foiled attempt to move the original home of Plantation’s founding father Frederick Peters, in hopes of making it the City’s first museum. “They got it in the middle of the road and it started falling apart,” recalls Schuler, who added that finding names to go with all of the photos also proved to be a major challenge.

Celebrating Plantation’s 60th-Images of America: Plantation will debut at a February 7 event, which will also include the opening of the “60 Years and Counting” exhibit marking Plantation’s Diamond Jubilee

In addition to a book signing by Schuler, who will be stepping down next year after leading the museum since 1991, the evening will also include the opening of the exhibit “60 Years and Counting” that celebrates Plantation’s history. f you love to shop for antiques, or even if you are simply look-

ing for a fun way to spend the weekend, make plans to visit one of Plantation’s longest running yearly events. The GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club will host their 30th Annual Antique Show and Sale this month continuing a decades old tradition. The show will be held February 16 and 17 at Volunteer Park and will feature antique and collectible vendors from throughout Florida. Each year, the show draws thousands of shoppers eager to browse the displays of dozens of vendors offering everything from antique furniture, jewelry, glass, clothing, pictures and more. The show will also feature an antique car display on the 16th, vintage clothing worn by many club members and a food court with homemade desserts on both days. The proceeds from the show are used for community improvements in the City, as well as the club’s many scholarship funds. Created in 1949, the GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club is the oldest civic organization in Plantation and works to foster a spirit of goodwill among the women of the city by forwarding charitable, educational and civic initiatives. The antique show was created 30 years ago and was originally held at both the City’s community center and Deicke Auditorium, but was moved west to Volunteer Park several years ago to accommodate a growing number of visitors.

The 30th Annual Antique Show and Sale will be held February 16 and 17 at Volunteer Park, located at 12050 West Sunrise Boulevard in Plantation. The show will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $4.50 at the door and are good for both days. Care-a-Little Program Helps Families in Need in Plantation By Julie Levin

A

group of Plantation firefighters recently

traded their firefighting gear for bright red Santa suits and elf attire. For a second year, the firefighters traveled to Plantation General Hospital, loaded with gifts, to brighten the holidays for children in the hospital. Firefighter Steve Cicione dressed as Santa to hand-deliver each of the gifts. “Being in the hospital is bad enough for a kid,” said Cicione, who came up with the idea. “But having to be there over the holidays is just miserable. Hopefully we made it a little better.” The December 20 visit is one of many events coordinated by Plantation Volunteer Firefighter’s Association’s CareA-Little program. Created several years ago, the program provides assistance to at risk children in the Plantation area. “Sponsored by Plantation’s Volunteer Fire Association, the group’s goal is to locate and assist school-aged children in the City of Plantation who need help with self-esteem and personal issues or are ‘at risk’ for trouble,” said Mary Cicione, Steve’s wife and the Care-a-Little Coordinator. The program raises money to provide children, as identified by the school system, with clothing, medical, dental or eye care, and if necessary, food or furniture. They also host back to school events, where they provide book bags loaded with basic school supplies, Thanksgiving baskets and gifts at holiday time. They are funded by a portion of the proceeds from the Fire Association’s Annual Barbecue,

which is held every November. This year, the Care-a-Little Program also had help from the community for their holiday gift drive. Toys and other gifts were supplied by five Plantation-area Walgreens, in an effort put together by Manager Charles Fratantoni of the Walgreens located at Broward and Nob Hill Boulevards. Limitless Martial Arts and Fitness in Plantation also held a toy drive at their location. Combined with donations from the Fire Department, Care-a-Little received so many toys that many will be donated to Women in Distress. Cicione said working on Care-a-Little initiatives is very much a family effort, for both her immediate family and their extended firefighting family. Son Vinnie is also a Plantation firefighter and daughter Melissa, 25, ran the Care-a-Little program last year. Daughter Serena, 19, also helps out. “We do it because it is very rewarding to help the kids and see their faces,” said Mary. If you’d like to help the Care-a-Little Program or know of a family in need, contact 954-797-2150 and ask for Mary Cicione.

hether you are planning an intimate dinner party for eight,

a wedding for 150 or anything in between, you want to enjoy your special occasion, not be stuck in the kitchen cooking and cleaning. That’s why the Plantation Publix is now offering a brand new service designed to make entertaining easier and your event a success. They are offering Publix Aprons Event Planning Catering, a unique service available exclusively in South Florida through the Plantation store. “Our catering program ranges from everything to a backyard barbeque to weddings or Bat Mitzvahs. We are a full service, professional catering company,” said Wes Bonner, the Resident Chef of Publix Aprons Cooking School in Plantation.

PUBLIX beverage service, bartenders, linens, servers and clean-up. “I think people see they don’t have to do it all themselves. We can do it all for them,” EVENT PLANNING said Bonner. The Publix Aprons Event Planning Catering combines the culinary expertise of Publix Aprons Cooking Schools with the creativity and organizational expertise of their Publix Aprons Event Planning service, which has been helping customers arrange their special occasions since 2001. Publix already offers wonderful deli platters, fresh fruit, bakery items and beautiful cakes, but Bonner said there was a taste to go beyond that. “Our customers were looking for more,” he said. “They wanted to really make the party their own.” The catered events are planned and prepared by the Publix Aprons Cooking School staff, which includes highly trained chefs and assistants. The Aprons team will sit down with customers and get an idea of what they are looking for. Customers can select from a variety of already prepared menus, or customize a meal specifically to their tastes and budget. Bonner says their pricing is competitive and all-inclusive,with no extra fees or gratuities tacked on at the last minute. Best of all he says, they are backed by the Publix reputation, which has been a mainstay in the Southeast for more than 80 years. “We offer premiere customer service to our consumers. One of the things we want to do through our catering program is offer that same service through a new venue,” Bonner said. The catering program is just the latest extension of the Publix Aprons Cooking Schools. The Plantation location is one of just eight stores in the Publix family to host an Aprons Cooking School, and one of only two in South Florida. They are designed to give customers a kitchen where they can learn to enjoy new culinary skills. “It’s really where people learn to have fun in the kitchen. That’s the Assistant Resident Chef Richard Wilson works on a dish whole idea behind what in the Plantation Aprons kitchen. All catering menus can be customized to the client’s taste and budget we do,” said Bonner. Each month, the Publix Apron Cooking Schools offer a variety of fun and educational cooking classes which cover everything from basic to exotic cuisines. Customers have a chance to get in the kitchen, work side-by-side with the chefs and enjoy what they’ve created. The schools also offer demonstrations and guest appearances by local and national celebrity chefs. Now offering Publix Aprons Event Planning Catering, Bonner says even more people will get a chance to see what Publix has to offer. Since unveiling the catering service just a few months ago, Bonner says customers have been happily surprised by the high quality, complete service that is provided. “They can’t believe that it was all done by Publix,” he said.

Plantation High Receives Grant To Promote Safe Teen Driving By Julie Levin

W

ith prom season and gradu-

ation celebrations just around the corner, one local high school will have a little extra help as they work to steer students into making the right decisions when they get behind the wheel. For the first time, Plantation High School received a $5,000 “Celebrate My Drive” grant from State Farm to support its efforts to promote safe teen driving. The school is one of 40 Florida community partners and schools sharing an estimated $120,000 in mini-grants to support “Celebrate My Drive”. “State Farm approached us before the school year to see if we were interested,” said Brougher Bass, an Assistant Principal at the school. “It is so important because in high school, the students are starting to transition into where they are independent drivers.” State Farm launched their on-going safe teen driving initiative in September. Events were held at locations throughout the state and the U.S, including Plantation High School. Bass said the school’s SGA organized their celebration around a car wash, which also offered entertainment, games, educational information, displays and demonstrations all designed to inform and empower teens drivers. “They invited the students that were just starting Drivers Ed over, so they could get the information

too,” said Bass. A key part of “Celebrate My Drive” focuses on the power of positive peer influences, and letting the students encourage each other to become safer drivers. Bass said that’s why the on-going campaign is run by students, who know how to get other students attention. Before the school break, the students prepared paper snowflakes with driver safety tips on them, reminding everyone not to drive under the influence, or text and drive. Other information was sent via text. “The kids know how to reach other kids,” he said. The students have also partnered with Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD). Now attention turns to planning safedriving events before prom, grad night and graduation season, to make sure young drivers get the message to resist the temptations that might arise before them. Bass has seen first-hand the toll a bad driving decision can take. 13 years ago, one of his students was critically injured and spent a year in rehab after an accident with an impaired driver. “I never want to be in that position again,” he said. “ It’s about driver awareness. It is about understanding that if you are dropping your date off at 2 a.m., the only other people on the road are coming from other events and may not be sober, so you have to be aware.”

Struggling Middle School Band Reaches Out to Help Others By Julie Levin

T

he Seminole Middle School Band hit a high note this past holi-

day season, using their generosity and skill to bring joy to troops stationed overseas. The Plantation school’s band led an effort recently to fill dozens of holiday stockings that were shipped to Afghanistan for the holidays. “The school and the community really got behind us for this and got involved,” said Heidi Hodes, the head of the band’s parent booster club. The band members and boosters got the word out through word-of-mouth and social media. They had so many donations, many of the items were slated for donation to the Salvation Army. Hodes said they ran the collection in gratitude of the sacrifice our troops make. In addition, a number of Seminole Middle students have family members on active duty. The effort is even more remarkable considering the band’s own economic struggles. Due to school budget cuts, the Seminole Middle School Band is one of only a small group of middle school marching bands in the area. It is a thriving program with 137 student-musicians, but many of the students at the Title 1 school have limited means to purchase or repair their instruments, uniforms or study with private tutors. Hodes says their instruments were purchased in 1971 and many are beyond repair. The Booster Club works through-out the year to provide bus transportation for field trips and parades, water for parades, repair kits for instruments, purchase paper for printing sheet music, pay fees and dues and subsidize those students who can’t afford to rent their equipment or books. The band is consistently awarded high ratings at district solo and ensemble and concert band events. They perform in many local parades, including Plantation’s “It’s a Wonderful Life in Plantation” Holiday Parade and take part in other instrumental ensembles offered at SMS, including Orchestra and Jazz Band. Hodes and the other SMS parents feel all are vital to the students’ growth and development. Last year, the

band boosters provided free sessions with local musicians, giving the students a chance to work in small groups in their specific section. Hodes said private study sessions like that would ordinarily cost each $30 per hour, money many of their students simply don’t have. The community is encouraged to help the band through either donations, or time. The band will be holding a fundraiser at Barnes and Noble Bookstore February 13. Just mention that you are a Seminole Band Booster, and a portion of the sales will go to the band. The fundraiser will run from 5 p.m.- 7 p.m. For more information on the band, visit their website at seminoleband.com.

ven though he only got into six games due to injury this year,

South Plantation Football Star Alex Collins apparently made a strong impression in each one of those games. The Paladin running back was recently named the Miami Dolphins High School Player of the Year award, presented by Under Armour. “The award really shocked me,” said Collins, a senior. “It really surprised me.” The honor is not much of a surprise to those who follow high school football in Broward. Collins helped lead his team to a 9-2 overall record this past season and a berth into the 2012 Florida High School Athletic Association playoffs. He handled 155 carries for the team, accumulating 1,275 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns. He also had two receptions for seven yards and was the Sun Sentinel Player of the Year last year. “He’s a rare athlete in terms of speed, size and quickness for a running back,” said Douglas Gatewood, the Head Football Coach at South Plantation High School

“If you look at his body of work from his junior and senior year, he is probably the best back in all of South Florida.” Collins received his trophy at Sun Life Stadium during a recent Miami Dolphins game. “It’s truly an honor to present this award to Alex,” said Twan Russell, the Dolphins Director of Youth & Community Programs. “Of course, there was numerous studentathletes worthy of receiving this award throughout South Florida and Southwest Florida. Again, congratulations to Alex on an outstanding season and exemplifying what a student athlete should represent on and off the field.” Collins also had the chance to compete in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl, a nationally televised high school All-American football competition. His coach says Collins is a rare talent on the field, not just in football, but in other endeavors he pursues. Collins will be off to college in the fall, but is still narrowing down where he wants to attend and play football.”Everything he wants to do, he is good at. He has a wonderful future ahead,” Gatewood said.

Legally speaking

The Key to a Successful Loan Modification By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

T

here are countless homeowners accepting loan modifications

in which their resulting payment is the same, and in some cases, actually higher than their original mortgage payment. Also, the resulting principal balance owed by these homeowners is far more than the home is worth, and even more than when they started the modification process. Still other homeowners end up losing their homes, because they are unable to complete a loan modification before the home is sold at public foreclosure auction. These homeowners were apparently unaware that the key to a successful loan modification is hiring an established law firm with an experienced loss mitigation department. First and foremost, every homeowner should know by now that just because you’ve applied for a loan modification does not mean that your lender will stop the foreclosure of your home. If you do not have proper representation in the foreclosure action, you risk losing your home before you can complete your loan modification. Despite what the bank representatives may tell you, the law firm representing the bank may have a different protocol to pursue the foreclosure of your home. We witness individuals in court lose their homes daily due to their refusal or inability to hire a qualified attorney to represent them. The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm have been representing consumers in foreclosure defense cases for over 17 years, are familiar with all the available legal defenses in a foreclosure case, and have established credibility through years of successful practice throughout the State of Florida. In addition, the Arcia Law Firm is one of only very few law firms with a local in house loss mitigation (“loss mit”) department that works hand in hand with our clients and our litigation department to ensure that the loan modification is completed before the foreclosure. When preparing a loan modification application, it is important that it contain everything the bank’s loan negotiators are looking for, and that it be organized in a certain specific order. If items are missing, your application is passed and sent to the back of the queue to start from the beginning. This process can continue for months, and then you must convince a loan negotiator that you qualify under the various government and/or the bank’s own in-house loan modification programs. This complex cycle is where most homeowners get stuck for months without success, or where they become so frustrated they accept the first modification offered despite the terms being worse than the original loan (higher principal, higher payments, etc.). The key to breaking the vicious cycle, and obtaining a viable loan modification is to be properly represented by a law firm that has both an established foreclosure defense as well as a knowledgeable and experienced loss mitigation department. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team.

If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information.

Hormone Replacement Therapy Helps Older Dogs Walk Again

M

y name is David Scott Bieber, DVM, P.A. I am a Veterinarian at Sheridan West Animal Clinic in Cooper City, Florida. I have an interesting story with a happy ending. My family and I had a Chocolate Labrador named Bruno, born 06/28/1997. Back in the end of 2008, Bruno was about 11 years old and started to have a hard time using his hind legs. He started having trouble getting up and trouble walking. We started anti-inflammatory therapy, pain management and adequan injections. By the end of December, Bruno was paralyzed in both hind legs. We took digital radiographs, and sent them to a Radiologist, which was concluded that he had chronic intervertebral disk disease in both cervical (neck) and lumbar (back) spines. This probably caused disk herniation with spinal cord compression at one or more sites. The prognosis was poor. To make a long story short, my family & I decided to put Bruno in a wheelchair on walks. Bruno was still very happy wagging his tail and eating. But nonetheless it was heart breaking watching him pull himself everywhere in the house. Bruno at this point was still on anti-inflammatories, glucosamine and adequan injections. Then, I began to think how will Bruno walk again if he has muscle weakness, muscle atrophy, and lack of bone density in his back legs and spine. I came up with the idea to give Bruno Testosterone injections once monthly, the idea being that testosterone maintains muscle mass and increases bone density. And, if you think about it, most dogs are neutered and have zero levels of testosterone to begin with. We were not giving body building doses, just enough to maintain muscle mass, so if his spinal cord damage ever healed he would be able to walk again. Five months went by in that wheelchair, and then Bruno started to walk again. Bruno died at 14 years old of chronic kidney disease which is their natural way of going. He walked until the end. I have been doing research since 2008 in the use of testosterone injections in the geriatric canine with incredible results. We are using it mainly on large breed dogs that are neutered, that are having a hard time getting up. These illnesses include arthritis, vertebral disk degeneration, hip dysplasia, muscle atrophy and degenerative joint disease. I have been using this treatment for the last 4 years, and it’s been and continue to be very successful with great results. 25% of all canines could profit from this treatment! These injections are not expensive to give, either.

Tax CN Talk

Tips for Choosing a Tax Preparer By Todd R. Bomser, CPA

B

other preparers. Also, beware of preparers who say they can get you a bigger return on last year’s taxes. ▸▸ Make sure the tax preparer is accessible. Make certain that you are able to contact the tax preparer after the return has been filed, even after the April due date, in case questions arise. Beware of pop-up tax filers who close up shop after tax season. ▸▸ Provide all records and receipts needed to prepare your return. Most reputable preparers will review your documents and will ask you multiple questions to determine your total income as well as your qualifications for expenses, deductions and other items. ▸▸ Review the entire tax return before signing it. Make sure you understand everything on your tax return and are comfortable with the accuracy of the return before you sign it. Never ever sign a blank return. The preparer must also give you a copy of the return. ▸▸ Make sure the preparer signs the form and includes their Preparer Tax Identification Number as required by law.

y now you should have received all of

your tax documents in the mail and gathered up all of your personal receipts in order to prepare your tax return. You can certainly elect to file your own taxes. However, because the tax code is so complicated, more than 60% of Americans elect to hire professionals. If you hire a tax preparer, be sure to choose wisely. As a taxpayer, you are legally responsible for what is on your tax return even if it is prepared by someone else. So, it is important to choose carefully when hiring an individual or firm to prepare your return. Here are a few points to keep in mind when hiring someone else to prepare your tax return: ▸▸ Check the person’s qualifications. Ask if the preparer is affiliated with a professional organization that provides its members with continuing education and resources and holds them to a code of ethics, such as the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants or state affiliates such as the Florida Institute of CPAs. ▸▸ Check the preparer’s history. See if the preparer has a questionable history with the Better Business Bureau and look for licensure statues or any disciplinary actions through the state boards of accountancy for CPAs; the state bar associations for attorneys; and the IRS Office of Professional Responsibility for enrolled agents. ▸▸ Find out about any service fees. Avoid preparers who base their fee on a percentage of your refund or those who claim they can obtain larger refunds than

Prevention of Skiing Injuries By Al DeSimone, M.D.

D

espite the lower incidence of skiing injuries

over the last several years, there are still more than 500,000 skiing injuries in the United States every year. Though foot and ankle injuries are becoming less common, knee ligament sprains and upper extremity injuries are extremely prevalent. We have also seen an elevated number of injuries involving the head and neck region, as well as the lower spine. After performing extensive research and giving multiple lectures on this topic, I think there are a number of pearls of wisdom to remember during skiing. Pre-season conditioning programs that include strength training focusing on flexibility and agility are recommended to all skiers to help reduce the incidence and severity of injuries. Though skiing instruction at the time of travel may lower the incidence of injuries, more specific injury prevention courses prior to going on a ski trip have been proven to lower the incidence of injuries.

INDOOR KART RACING Remember to acclimate yourself with rest, proper hydration and a high carbohydrate diet, as these elements will protect against fatigue. Most injuries occur within the first few days of skiing because most individuals progress very quickly to a high demand level of activity. To prevent injury progress slowly, avoid prolonged periods of rest and stop skiing prior to fatigue. Also keep in mind that late afternoon skiing has the highest incidence of injury mostly due to changes in skiing conditions. When looking for the appropriate equipment, consider age, height, weight and level of expertise, as beginner skiers should even consider a helmet. Assure proper binding adjustments, as failure to do so has been associated with a higher occurrence of skiing related injuries. Falling backwards (sitting on your skies) may often result in significant injury. Always try to keep your knees flexed and remain balanced on your skies. These are a few tips for all skiing enthusiasts of this season. Remember that safe skiing is always fun.

A “Perfect” Room

Former Miami Dolphins players Jim Kiick and Bob Kuechenberg from Dolphins ‘The Perfect Season’, along with former player Nat Moore, were on hand at Duffy’s Plantation as they unveiled its “Perfect Room,” a room dedicated to the Miami Dolphins’ perfect season in 1972.

The donation was courtesy of Plantation-based Setnor Byer Insurance & Risk, which has a long-standing tradition of charitable giving. Recently, they launched a Facebook campaign so that fans could help them pick which local Broward County charity would receive $5,000. Participation was so high that Setnor Byer increased the donation to $10,000 total. Voices for Children received $5,000. Hispanic Unity came in second, winning them $2,000. An additional $3,000 was split among the remaining charities.

The Santa Squad

If you were out on Plantation streets December 24th, chances are you ran into one of these guys. The City of Plantation sent more than one dozen “Santa Claus” lookalikes, along with dozens of elves through City streets to bring holiday cheer to youngsters and their families.

The non-profit raised more than $130,000 for seniors, families and individuals in need in the community at its “All that Glitters is Gold Masked Gala.” A sold-out crowd of 450 supporters celebrated 50 years of serving Broward County residents. Among the Plantation residents in attendance, Sharon Schwartz, JFS Past President, and Amy Stolberg, a 2012 Spirit of Family Honoree, David & Carrie Schulman, the auction winners of the Romero Britto original JFS mask and Howard Finkelstein, the event Master of Ceremonies and sister Laurie Finkelstein Reader, a 2012 Spirit of Family Honoree.
