I’m thrilled to announce that with this issue we are expanding our local community news coverage to the City of Sunrise. Sunrise Town Times is the newest addition to our family of publications which have been serving readers in West Broward for over ten years. Each month Our City Weston and our Town Times magazines deliver award-winning, family-related, local news editorials to keep you informed on everything that is going on in your hometown. The pages are packed with interesting and informative articles about community events, school programs, new businesses and much more. Local Performer Hits the Billboard Charts By Julie Levin
F
or A sha S ing’ s most recent birthday, she landed a gift she ’ s
not likely to ever forget. The Plantation-bred singer/songwriter watched as her new single, Mercy, landed on the Billboard Hot Singles Chart. Seeing her song sitting at #7 on the charts was the sweetest moment yet in her career. “It was a very surreal and humbling moment for me,” said the 22-year old Sing. Sing has been gaining steam in the music world for the past three years. The multi-talented young artist, who is of Indian descent, is part of the BMI family along with fellow South Asian Artists A.R Rehman and Jay Sean. She calls her music a blend of American pop, mixed with Indian flare, a blend of Bollywood meets Hollywood. She says her heritage plays a big part in her style. “Especially when it comes to my imaging, it truly makes me unique. Sometimes it can get a bit tricky incorporating into my songwriting, but it always shines through in production. The best part has to be the fashion though. I love putting together pieces that showcase both Eastern and Western design,” she said. Sing has been singing and dancing since she was three years old, but her career began
to blossom several years ago when she competed at the world famous Apollo Theater Amateur Talent Competition in Harlem, NY and placed second by belting out Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.” In 2010, Sing had the chance to be a back-up dancer and singer for Shakira at the Premios Juventud 2010 in Miami performing the World Cup song Waka Waka. Working with Paul Ebersold, a Grammy winning producer, they released Mercy in August, along with a music video to “Mercy (Daniel Simmons Remix).” Sing graduated last year from the prestigious Frost School of Music at the University of Miami and is now pursuing music as a full time career. Another big step recently; working with Daddy Yankee to write his recently released single “Lose Control.” The song was featured on MTV’s new show Washington Heights as well as on VH1’s Hit The Floor. When she’s not in a studio, Asha says she is usually working on an arrangement, writing a song to be recorded in a studio or in rehearsal for an upcoming show. She plans to release a new single soon, in advance of her upcoming album. For more, visit her website at www.ashasing.com
Directors Looking for Variety of Performers for Yearly Talent Show By Julie Levin
I
t ’ s not American I dol or the X-Factor , but it is a chance to
make it to the local spotlight. Auditions will be held this month for the yearly Tinsel Town Cabaret, and the show’s directors are looking for entertainers who can steal the show. “We are looking for great acts to put together a good variety show,” said Wes Lockard, the Special Events Coordinator for the city. Two audition dates- March 15 and 19-are planned for the annual City-wide show. They will be held at the Volunteer Park Community Center, with one session in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Open to all ages, organizers are looking for anywhere from 18-20 acts to perform in one of three categories: Music: vocal, instrumental or combination; Dance: tap, jazz, ballet, folk, or interpretative; Theater: dramatic or comic presentation and an open category for any combination of the three. Those selected for the show will perform at the Tinsel Town Cabaret, which will be held May 2. Lockard says auditions have become so popular that they often have to turn away as many as 20-25 acts. This year, they are putting a priority on broadening the variety of the acts they pick. There’s usually a big number of singers looking to audition, but directors also hope to see some comedians, bands, or other unique performers come forward. “We are looking for bigger and better talent,
10
March 2014 | plantation town times
and maybe more variety. Something a little out of the ordinary,” Lockhard said. While the idea is to showcase local talent in Plantation, the auditions are open to entertainers throughout the area. Even those not selected gain both exposure and experience. “It’s a good way for them to get their feet wet and see if it’s really what they want to do,” said Lockard, who Impress them and land a spot in the Tinsel Town directs the show with Cabaret! Directors Jack Takacs and Wes Lockard Jack Takacs. Over the years, the event has become a popular family-friendly event where performers are cheered on by the audience, and also have a chance to compete for prizes. Auditions will be held at Volunteer Park, 12050 W. Sunrise Boulevard, on Saturday, March 15 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Wednesday, March 19 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. All ages, groups or individuals are welcome. If you are trying out, make sure you come prepared with props, costumes, etc. Acts should not exceed 3 minutes. A CD/tape player and a piano are available, but no accompanist. Please have all music cued. Selected contestants will perform on Friday, May 2, 7:30 p.m. at Volunteer Park. For more information, call 954-452-2510 or 954-452-2506.

Curtain To Rise on Unique Cultural Performance By Julie Levin
cultures and races who live in South Florida.” The show, Many Cultures, One People-sponsored by Comforts of Home, will be held March 23 at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. Organizers selected the large venue in hopes the show, which will feature the dance and music of different cultures, will draw upwards of 1400 guests. “My dearest hope is that we sell-out,” said Smith. Created in 1962, JFS of Broward County is dedicated to empowering individuals, strengthening families and protecting the vulnerable by providing exceptional human services. While the values they express through caring, individual dignity and social justice are rooted in their Jewish heritage, JFS provides services to people of all ages, ethnicities and religions. “We are trying to make everyone know we are here for everyone,” said Smith. “That’s part of the idea behind the Many Cultures, One People event.” The event will cover an eclectic and colorful range, including performances by Women in Jazz, Fushu Daiku Japanese Taiko Drummers, Silver Stars USA Steel Orchestra, Simon Salz Klezmer Band, Nritya Surabhi Indian Dance School and more. Organizers say proceeds will help JFS of Broward bring its services to more people in need throughout the county, as well as provide something for nearly everyone in the audience. “It’s not very often you get multi-cultural

Scaling New Heights to Battle Cancer By Julie Levin
H
oward Jacoby rappelled down a 13- story building last year ,
and had only one regret about his bird’s eye view adventure. “It wasn’t high enough,” the Plantation man said. “I wish the building was higher.” Jacoby was one of 60 people who rappelled down a Fort Lauderdale hi-rise last year, and is getting ready to do it again. The event, called Over the Edge for Gilda’s, encourages participants to rappel down the side of a building, supported by friends and family who sponsor the effort. “I loved it so much I’ve got to do it again,” Jacoby said. The second annual Over the Edge for Gilda’s event will be held April 5 at the B Ocean Fort Lauderdale Hotel, at the corner of Sunrise Boulevard and A1A. The event is a fundraiser for Gilda’s Club South Florida, which has been providing programs to those living with cancer and their family and friends since 1997. The mission will be a personal one for the 61-year old Jacoby, who has been battling Non Hodgkins Lymphoma since 2001. He has gone through extensive chemotherapy three different times, and says Gilda’s Club was a beacon of hope when it came to providing the first-hand support he needed. “Your friends can do a lot of things to help you, but it gets to a certain point that they really don’t know what to do. Gilda’s Club gave me that extra bit that I Howard Jacoby
needed,” he said. Organizers say all of the proceeds raised from the event will support Gilda’s Club South Florida by ensuring that the support groups, lectures, workshops, specialized children’s and teen programs, and social events offered remain available to its members free of charge. “Gilda’s Club is thrilled to host this event for a second year,” said Gilda’s Club CEO, Shelley Goren. “We received tremendous support from fundraisers, donors and media last year. We knew we couldn’t miss the opportunity to generate so much enthusiasm and attention to a great cause.” Jacoby says his wife Marlene and three grown children were initially surprised he wanted to Jacoby going “Over the attempt the feat. Plantation Sisters Honored for Animal Advocacy Efforts By Julie Levin
F
ollowing a humane animal education program at their
school, two Plantation sisters unexpectedly found themselves the focus of attention. Twin sisters Sydney Cohen and Alexandria Cohen were surprised with an honor for their own on-going animal advocacy efforts. The girls were presented with the “Kind to All” award from the Stuart-based Animal Hero Kids, Inc group. “The Animal Hero Kids “Kind to All” award goes to those who assist all species of animals in crisis, companion animals, wild animals and factory farmed animals,” said Susan Hargreaves, founder of Animal Hero Kids. “Ronnie V. Cow loves to assist in recognizing youth who “walk the walk” making compassionate decisions. The Cohen twins advocate not going to circuses or aquariums where wild animals are held captive, add this to their cruelty-free food choices and volunteer work for homeless dogs and cats and we have a consistently humane example of Animal Hero Kids.” Hargreaves made the presentation, along with her rescue poodle “Lovey” and a costumed cow named “Ronnie,” January 31st at the David Posnack Jewish Day School in Davie, where the girls are in the fifth grade. The award was presented as a surprise to the twins after an animal rights assembly for students. The soonto-be 11 year olds shared some advice with their classmates.”Always rescue a dog, and never go to a breeder, because there’s already enough dogs and cats in the shelters, and we don’t want (l-r) Sydney Cohen and them to be killed,” explained Alexandria. “Also, Alexandria Cohen with the “Kind to All” award they received spay and neuter,” added Sydney. “Because from Animal Hero Kids.
there’s so many animals, dogs and cats, being killed every year.” The Cohen twins have been rescuing animals for most of their young lives. Along with their parents, animal activists Jennifer and Brian Cohen, Sydney and Alexandria have fostered numerous dogs and cats for Broward County Animal Care and Adoption. Their efforts landed them on the cover of South Florida Pets Magazine. They’ve also held bake sales raising money for homeless animals and will be spearheading a collection for the South Florida Wildlife Center, from which they’ve adopted an orphaned hamster. Their goal is to raise money to buy and donate an avian Animal Hero Kids Founder Susan incubator to the nonprofit organization. Interest Soaring in School’s Rocket Building Outreach Program By Julie Levin

dozens of Peters Elementary students who traded an evening at home recently to learn how to design and build their own rockets. Their instructors: students in Plantation High School’s renowned Aerospace Engineering Design & Technology program who created an “open lab night” outreach program for Peters Elementary students. “Eventually, we will fly their rockets with them,” said Joseph Vallone, Plantation High’s Aerospace Instructor. The educational partnership, fostered by Plantation High School Principal Alona DiPaolo and Peters Elementary Principal Kathy Sedlack, was designed as an opportunity to improve the technological literacy of young students and let them get excited about STEM careers at an early age. Once a week, students in grade 2-5 are invited to Plantation High to design, build, and launch real rockets. “If we don’t foster that kind of interest in our generations moving forward, we are not going to be a world leader anymore,” Vallone said. The 2nd and 3rd grade students gathered in the school’s cafeteria where they created small solid fuel rockets and learned the basic physics of rocketry, flight dynamics, and construction. “I want to see them fly,” said 3rd grader Kaitlyn Buckler. Carol Kedzierski, a 2nd grade teacher at Peters Elementary who has been building rockets with her students for years and helped develop the outreach program, said the benefits are enormous. “They develop math skills, reading, they have to follow directions, they have to work as a team, plus it is team building,” she said. Students in the older grades had the chance to build their rockets from scratch using simulation software to design custom rocket components and the use high school’s 2D Laser Cutter and 3D Printer to manufacture their designs. “Instead of just flying a rocket, they have to design how to cushion an egg in flight without breaking it,” said Vallone. The Plantation High School Aerospace Engineering Technology & Design program is a 4-year program that teaches students the entire engineering process: coding of hardware and software, electronics, materials, propulsion and more. Students have the opportunity to earn State of Florida Industry Certifications in Adobe Photoshop, 2D AutoCAD, 3D AutoCAD, Mechanical Drafter, and the 12th grade course affords students the opportunity to earn college credit. It was created by Vallone, who started teaching rocket building in his physics class ten years ago. From there, he says it has grown into the only full scale program in the county, and the state, and is nationally renowned. His students have applied for and been awarded 13 NASA grants in seven years, receiving funding to build large rockets that fly to a one-mile altitude.

Gator is Guest of Honor at School’s New Environmental Center By Julie Levin Left: The Gator Boys, Paul Bedard and Jimmy Riffle, introduce a five-foot gator to students Center: Red ribbon effort: The gator taking a few bites at the ceremonial red ribbon Right: The gator and his handlers left their mark on the center by putting hand and footprints in freshly poured concrete

mental habitat, a Plantation school recently called upon one of the area’s best known wildlife inhabitants. Looking for a fitting guest of honor to help dedicate their new environmental education center, the American Heritage School laid out the red ribbon for a five-foot gator. The “spokes-animal” came courtesy of the Gator Boys, the well-known alligator trappers made famous on Discovery Channel’s Animal Planet. The grand opening of the school’s new Environmental Education Center took place January 16. The Gator Boys, Paul Bedard and Jimmy Riffle, introduced the gator to 50 students who gathered in the center’s outdoor amphitheater. The duo fielded questions about their profession, and tried to put a different twist on the cutting of the ceremonial red ribbon by having the gator tear it open with its teeth. After two bites, the plan was scrapped but the gator was able to leave its mark by leaving his footprints into a freshly-poured concrete slab.
The one-acre environmental education center was designed to replicate the natural habitat of plants and animals indigenous to Florida, and is certified as a national wildlife sanctuary. Students in grades PK through 12 will use it for handson environmental learning and experiences with turtles, tropical birds, butterflies, archaeological digs and even gardens they plant themselves. “We are proud of the Certified Wildlife Habitat we have created at our school not just for our students and faculty to enjoy but also for so many animals to thrive, as well,” said Dr. Douglas Laurie, Vice President of American Heritage School. The appearance was one of the last public appearances the Gator Boys planned to make before they began production on another season of their show. Filmed in Broward County, the show focuses on Jimmy Riffle and co-star Paul Bedard, who rescue alligators that have invaded the back yards, swimming pools, garages and bedrooms of Florida residents.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Rupture in the Young Athlete By Dr. Al DeSimone
A
nterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) ruptures
remain one of the most devastating injuries to the young competitive athlete. The ACL is the major supporting ligament within the knee joint providing stability to the knee during running, cutting and twisting sports. Though a traumatic collision with another athlete can cause a rupture to the ACL, a sudden alteration in speed and/or change in direction can also predispose an athlete to this injury. The athlete will often describe a loud popping sensation within the knee joint and experience severe pain, swelling and weakness combined with an inability to ambulate. Diagnosis is usually made by obtaining a proper history of injury and by performing a thorough clinical examination of the involved knee. X-rays and MRIs are extremely beneficial during this evaluation and will often help rule-out concomitant injuries to the adjacent ligaments, menisci and/or cartilage.
The goal of treatment is to return the athlete back to his or her prior level of activity, including competitive sports. Rarely, one may consider conservative/nonoperative treatment for those patients that are extremely sedentary and inactive in athletics. In this incidence, treatment may include rehabilitation, bracing and restriction to certain activities. For those individuals who are competitive athletes and participate in high-demand twisting sports, surgical ACL reconstruction is the treatment of choice. Over the last several years, I have seen numerous patients with surgical failures from prior ACL reconstructions that have been referred to my office for further consultation and revision surgery. Having performed over 1,700 Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstructions and over 200 revision surgical procedures, I remain convinced that this procedure is extremely technical and should be treated with state-of-the-art surgical technique and attention to detail. Though re-injury may be a common cause of failure subsequent to ACL reconstruction, technique related failures are commonly seen and can often occur from improper graft selection, tunnel placement, graft tensioning, and/or methods of fixation. Timing of surgery and proper postoperative instructions, including return to athletics, also play a significant role in prevention of re-injury. In concordance with the literature barring any anatomical or growth related considerations, I prefer to utilize bone-patella tendon-bone autograft for the young, high-demand athlete. Treatment of an Anterior Cruciate Ligament rupture continues to be a challenging problem for the high school, collegiate and community athletes. It is imperative that young individuals (and parents) understand the importance of pursuing treatment by an experienced surgeon, preferably with a subspecialty interest in knee ligament reconstruction. Failure to do so may predispose an athlete to additional surgery and prevent return to sports in a timely manner. Al DeSimone, MD, is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon, Fellowship Trained in Sports Medicine. He specializes in Complex Knee Ligament and Shoulder Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. DeSimone is the Director of Sports Medicine at Sports Medicine Associates of South Florida P.A. He practices at the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, Weston, FL 33326. To schedule an appointment, please call (954) 389-9178. Protecting Yourself from Identity Theft By Nancy Rappaport, President and CEO of PriorityONE Credit Union of Florida
R
ecent breach of personal data at local
stores has placed us all on high alert as identity theft rises. Let’s power-up our day with a strong cup of coffee and review some key information about Identity Theft.
What is Identity theft?
Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information without your knowledge to commit fraud or other crimes. In many cases, the victim is unaware of the activity until months after the incident.
Identity Theft can happen in various ways:
▸▸ Stealing your purse/wallet ▸▸ Stealing financial statements from the mail ▸▸ Diverting mail from its intended recipients by submitting a change of address form. ▸▸ Rummaging through trash for personal data. ▸▸ Obtaining information transmitted electronically. ▸▸ Skimming or electronic device theft of card numbers.
What can you do to prevent identity thieves from accessing your information?
Here are a few practices that will minimize unauthorized access to your personal information: ▸▸ Contact your financial institution if you do not receive a monthly statement/bill. ▸▸ Review account statements carefully to ensure all transactions were authorized by you. ▸▸ Do not leave bill payment envelopes in your mailbox. Deposit them in a post
office collection box or at the local post office. Promptly remove incoming mail. ▸▸ Review your free annual credit reports at www.annualcreditreport.com ▸▸ Don’t leave your Social Security Card in your wallet/purse and ask why when someone requests your social security number. ▸▸ Never click on links sent to you by an unsolicited email. ▸▸ Don’t give your account number to anyone on the phone unless you’ve made the call to a company you know to be reputable. ▸▸ Shred personal and financial documents when you no longer need them. ▸▸ Don’t write your account number on the outside of an envelope.
What should I do if it happens to me?
If you’ve detected fraudulent activities on your account contact your financial institution immediately. Make a note for your file of what institution was contacted, who you talked to and the date/time your call was made. Determine whether you will need a police report or take further action. In response to concerns over identity theft, numerous companies and financial institutions have stepped in with identity theft protection services that can help you monitor your accounts. These services may also include fraud alerts and freezes on your credit reports. Many people find it valuable and convenient to pay a company to keep track of their financial accounts, credit reports, and personal information. Others choose to do this on their own. Ask your financial institution about their identity theft program and see if it’s right for you. Nancy Rapport is the CEO and President of PriorityONE Credit Union of Florida. Legally Speaking
What Homeowners Need to Know about Florida’s New Speedy Foreclosure Law By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
A
fter a two year effort, Florida legislators approved a new
foreclosure law that significantly affects the rights of homeowners struggling to pay their mortgages. Under the veil of “helping Florida’s economic recovery,” Governor Rick Scott signed House Bill 87 into law on June 7, 2013. Unless this new law is overturned by the courts, it is expected to have a profound impact on the foreclosure process in favor of the banks and homeowners’ associations. The new law permits a lender or its servicer to file a foreclosure action and, instead of being required to prove its right to foreclose, it unfairly shifts the burden on the homeowner to “prove” that the lender “does not have the right” to foreclose. This new procedure is time sensitive, and if the homeowner does not provide the necessary evidence, a final judgment of foreclosure is entered. In as quickly as 45 days, the property could be sold at a foreclosure auction. The new law also provides homeowners’ associations with same expanded rights to quickly evict non-paying homeowners through this new expedited foreclosure process. For homeowners that are behind on their mortgage or HOA payments (but not yet in foreclosure), it is imperative that you immediately consult with a legal professional about your case. There are a number of “pre-foreclosure” steps that must be taken in order to defend yourself and your family from this new speedy foreclosure law. Remember you will only have a limited amount of time (20 days) to prove that the party suing for foreclosure does not have the legal right to do so. This means that the evidence needs to be gathered before the foreclosure process starts, and there are critical requests for information that must be presented to lenders prior to a foreclosure to avoid losing your home. The new speedy foreclosure law also states that if your house is foreclosed on fraudulently, you cannot get it back. You will only be entitled to file an action for damages against the lender or other party that obtained the wrongful foreclosure. We all know that in foreclosure cases there are a disturbing number of mistakes being made by banks and their attorneys. For those homeowners currently in foreclosure, it is critically important that any mistakes in the process be identified and brought to the attention of the court BEFORE a final judgment. In short, this new speedy foreclosure law is wrong, and it clearly violates the due process rights of the good citizens of Florida. It will force many more homeowners into bankruptcy as the only reliable means of saving their home. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. t ’ s that time of year again , the tax season is
upon us. As you gather your tax documents to deliver to your tax preparer, be aware of tax fraud & identify theft.
How big is this problem?
According to the IRS.gov website, as of May 16, 2012, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) pulled 2.6 million returns for possible identity theft, and that trend is continuing to increase. The IRS recently reported an inventory of more than 450,000 identity theft cases.
What is the IRS doing about it?
You might not think it can happen to you, but it’s such a big problem that stopping identity theft is a top priority for the IRS. For the 2014 filing season, the IRS assigned more than 3,000 IRS employees to work on identity theft-related issues. In addition, they are training more than 35,000 employees to work with taxpayers to recognize identity theft indicators and help people victimized by identity theft.
How does this happen?
Tax return identity theft occurs when someone uses a taxpayer’s personal information, such as name and Social Security number, without permission to commit fraud on tax returns to claim refunds or other credits to which a taxpayer is not entitled.
Tips to protect you from becoming a victim of identity theft ▸▸ Use a trusted tax preparer to prepare your income tax returns. Documents given to a tax preparer have sensitive information such as Social Security number, drivers licenses’, banking and other personal information.

▸▸ Research your tax preparer and avoid claims of refunds that sounds too good to be true.
Your Tax
Preparation
▸▸ Don’t carry your Social Security card or any documents with your SSN or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. ▸▸ Protect and secure your financial information.
Why should I use a certified tax preparer? The grueling requirements to become a CPA include:
▸▸ Education – a minimum of 150 hours of college education; ▸▸ Examination – the Uniform CPA Exam, one of the hardest among all professions; ▸▸ Ethics – a college requirement, and on the exam;

Doggie-Palooza
Canines in costume and dogs doing Frisbee tricks were the order of the day during the City of Plantation’s recent Doggie-Palooza. More than 2,500 hundred people turned out for the yearly dog expo at the Happy Trails Dog Park for a chance to meet with local vendors, pet rescue groups and a day of fun for the dogs.
Lions & Dragons Dance
A colorful Lion and Dragon Dance helped usher in the Chinese New Year in Plantation recently. The beautifully decorated lions were brought to life by Kung Fu practitioners from the John Wai Kung Fu Academy, and were joined by nine performers operating a vibrant 50-foot dragon. The celebration to welcome the Year of the Horse began January 31.
