Don’t Forget Father’s Day!
I
t is hard to believe that J une
is already here! The school year flew by and now it’s time to enjoy summer vacation. That means no more homework, no getting up early to rush to class, and no running around to afterschool activities. Summer is the time to relax and enjoy unscheduled time together with family and friends. While mothers worldwide had their recognition last month, fathers, who also play an integral role in bringing up a child, are often a bit forgotten. This month, as we celebrate Father’s Day, it is time to show our fathers how much we appreciate all their hard work, their dedication and their sacrifices over the years. More than likely it was your dad who taught you to play catch, ride a two-wheeler, maybe even drive a car. Today’s dads are active dads, who are building close-knit relationships with their sons and daughters. Now is the time to show your gratitude. Don’t forget to say “Thank you, Dad” from your heart. Sincerely,
Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Library to Kick-Off Summer Reading Program This Month By Julie Levin
S
chool’ s out, and if your children are looking for something
to do, why not get them interested in a few great books? The Helen B. Hoffman Library in Plantation can help make that easy with its annual Summer Reading Program. Library organizers are going to kick-off their program June 10 with an event for children from 7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. “It’s just a night to get everyone excited about all of the different events that we have over the summer,” said Jessica White, Assistant Children’s Librarian with the Helen B. Hoffman Library. All ages are welcome at the event, which will include a chance to sign up for different programs, a DJ and a photo booth to help drive home the theme of “Picture Yourself at the Library This Summer.” Kids will also have a chance to learn about the many different activities planned through the summer; puppet shows, game night, craft night, summer science activity, and the popular library lock-in. “Throughout the summer, kids are invited to come to the library, check out books and come see the events that we have,” said White.
Many of the activities throughout the summer will be geared towards children who are reading independently. White says it is a great way for them to avoid falling behind in their reading skills, while also enjoying themselves.”After school ends, there’s not a connection from what you did over the school year to the next school year. A lot of time, reading levels can drop over the summer if they are not keeping up with the level they achieved over the last school year,” she said. The Summer Reading Program Kick-off will be held June 10 at the Helen B. Hoffman Library, located at 501 N. Fig Tree Lane from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Weather permitting, look for the festivities outdoors on their front lawn. For more information, call the library at 954-797-2140. The West Regional Library in Plantation also has a full slate of activities planned for children and teens from June 8 to August 3rd. Their Summer Kickoff is set for June 8 for all ages from 2 to 3 p.m. There will be a “Fantastic Magic Show,” as well as a chance to sign up for the summer reading program. You can sign up even if you miss the kick-off event. The West Regional Library is located at 8601 W Broward Blvd. For more information, phone them at (954) 765-1560.

undreds of residents spent
the night at Central Park recently to take part in Plantation’s annual Relay for Life. An estimated 52 teams took part in the yearly cancer-fighting event, which was held April 26-27. The overnight Relay began with an opening ceremony, which included the Survivors Lap where cancer survivors are invited to take the first lap around the track. “We had Plantation Fire Chief Laney Stearns, Reverend Robert more than 100 survivors participating in our Deshaies from St. Benedicts opening ceremonies,” said Wendy Robbin, Episcopal Church, Plantation Police Chief W. Howard Harrison the Plantation event chairperson. There was also a Luminaria Ceremony which honored those who have been lost to the disease, or those whose fight continues. Throughout the night, members of teams from local schools, businesses, clubs, churches and synagogues took turns walking the track, helping to raise at least $164,000. According to Robbin, the local Relay raised $149,000 last year, making the Plantation Relay for life the 3rd most successful in Broward and 25th in the state. “Everyone has been touched my cancer in some way, through a relative, a friend or a co-worker,” said Robbin. “I think it is really important that all of us strive to give what we can and educate as many people as we can about prevention, help people who are going through cancer and try to find more cures.” Teams Captains were due to have a wrap-up party early this month. Organizers say the fundraising will continue through the summer, before thoughts turn to the 2014 Plantation Relay for Life.

What sets your office apart from other local dental practices?
What sets us apart from others is we can perform your treatment under IV sedation as you basically sleep through your procedure. We also perform most of our own treatments and rarely need to refer a patient out of our office as we have a periodontist and orthodontist on staff.
What can clients expect when they visit your office? Our clients can expect honesty, integrity and friendliness in a clean, state-of-the-art environment. Our patients feel like they are visiting friends when they return.
Please tell us about Dr. Vallejo’s background? I grew up in South
Florida, went to Barry University for my Bachelors in Science Degree. I then moved to Chicago to attend Northwestern University Dental School where I was among the top clinical students in my class. During the summer of my junior year, I was chosen to work with the Colorado Public Health Department helping migrant farm workers and their families with their dental needs. I then moved to Los Angeles and attended UCLA for my residency in Hospital Dentistry, where I studied under one of the most prominent cosmetic dentists in the country. I have been practicing in Plantation for more than 15 years.
Why do enjoy what you do? I enjoy what I do because I get the chance to change someone’s life with cosmetic dentistry, or help someone feel better and also change their perspective of the dentist by performing painless procedures through IV sedation.
Please tell us about your staff. My staff is second to none. They are well-trained and are willing to help our patients in whatever way they can, clinically and financially. I get compliments on my staff all the time. What do you like to do when you are not working? Married for 23 years, my wife and I have three boys ranging from 7 to 15 years old. Local Performers Steal the Show at Tinsel Town Cabaret By Julie Levin
W
Performer Rachel Thompson
hile it ’ s not as well known as American I dol or the X-Factor ,
Plantation’s yearly talent show is a chance to make it to the local spotlight, and nearly two dozen local entertainers did just that recently. The Tinsel Town Cabaret 2013 was held at Volunteer Park May 10th, bringing together some of the city’s most dedicated singers, dancers and musicians who are among the top rated talent in our area. More than 200 people turned out for the fun-filled evening of family entertainment to cheer on family members, friends and others from the community who have a song in their heart, and the talent to bring it to the spotlight. Each year, organizers from the City’s Parks and Recreation Department select anywhere from 18-20 acts who can perform in one of three categories: Music(vocal, instrumental or combination); Dance- (tap, jazz, ballet, folk, or interpretative); Theater- (dramatic or comic presentation) and an open category for any combination of the three. In past years, the talent has been some deep that some of those who performed have gone on to appear in commercials, films and television shows. Simply making it to the stage for Tinsel Town Cabaret 2013 is an achievement in itself. Each year, the show’s producers host two audition dates for the annual City-wide talent show, and performers of all ages and talents come to show what they’ve got. It’s up to the show’s producers to put on the best show possible that residents will enjoy.”We just look for variety and entertainment,” said Wes Lockard, the Special Events Coordinator for the city. The show began several years ago as a competition with prizes awarded, but has now turned into more of showcase to spotlight local talPerformer Jessica Ramirez ent. Though many of the performers are from Plantation, the auditions also draw entertainers from throughout the area. Lockard says it has become so popular they often have to turn away as many as 20-25 audition acts. Even so, he says trying-out is a great way for would-be performers to gain both exposure and experience, even if they aren’t selected. “It’s a good way for them to get their feet wet and see if it’s really what they want to do,” he said.

Not Just Puppy Love By Julie Levin
C
had M oreau wanted to come up with a special way to pro -
pose to longtime girlfriend Tiffany Galpern. So the 30-year old Plantation man turned to the four-legged love of his life, a Boston Terrier named Molly, to help pop the question. Ever since Tiffany had come into his life, Moreau loved the way they blended together as a family. “Tiffany and my dog fell in love right away when they met, so I knew that if I was going to propose, it had to involve Molly in some manner,” Moreau explained.
She said Yes! Chad Moreau, Molly and fiancé Tiffany Galpern (photo credit: Green Paws Pet Market)
In fact, Molly played a key role in the proposal, which took place May 11 at the Green Paws Pet Market in Plantation. Moreau worked out a plan with co-owner Hugh Graf to drop Molly off early in the morning for grooming, and then have Galpern pick up the pampered pup when she was done. When the staff brought Molly out, the terrier was not only clean, but wearing a shirt with a special message that said “Will you Marry My Daddy?” Moreau, who was be hiding in the back of the spa, snuck in behind her and took it from there. “She read the shirt and as she turned around, I was already behind her and dropping to one knee,” he said. Moreau admits he was nervous at first, but knew Molly would help close the deal for him. He even recruited his mother and sister into the scheme. They took Galpern out to have her nails done, to make sure she arrived at the pet market right on time. “The best thing about it is that I know she loves surprises,” Moreau said. “So I knew the best way to do it was at the store where it would be completely unexpected,” The happy couple hasn’t set a date yet, but hope to plan their nuptials for sometime next year. Galpern, 28, is a school psychologist finishing an internship. Of course, Molly may be a part of the wedding too. “We’ve been discussing it,” said Moreau. “We think she has to be but we are still trying to work out the logistics. Either way, I couldn’t be happier.”

Should I Play in Pain?
Plantation Woman Leads Local Effort to Stop Drunk Driving
By Dr. Tony Moya
T
he ability to exercise and compete effectively
and at the highest performance possible will depend on how healthy your body is, how strong your muscles are and how well trained you are. So avoid injuries by strengthening and stretching your muscles before you exercise. What are the parameters used by doctors and professional athletes to decide whether it is safe to play or not? How do you determine whether you are able to play or not? If you decide to exercise and play with pain you must monitor the intensity of the pain during the game. If your pain allows you to run, jump or exercise without limitations and if the pain does not increase in intensity, the injury is considered in most cases stable. Most athletes can continue to exercise with caution.
Avoid injuries by strengthening and stretching your muscles before you exercise.
If your pain is something that came slowly with the aging process then it is most likely arthritic in nature and you should change the types of exercises you do. Avoid loading, high impact exercises and do none-loading, low impact exercises such as cycling or swimming. If the pain showed up suddenly it is usually something that will not allow you to exercise. If you are playing and the pain increases in intensity you should stop playing. If the pain is gone by the time you wake up the next day then it is okay to exercise and compete on that day. This indicates that the amount of tissue injury is not and has not exceeded tissue healing. If the pain is present the next morning after you exercise you should then consult your physician to take X-rays and even a MRI Scan to find out in detail what is causing your pain. If your X-ray and MRI Scan are negative then ice, rest and anti-inflammatory medications are enough to let you return to sports. In other more serious injuries such as fractures, rotator cuff tears, meniscus tear and ACL tears, the decision to return to sports activities can be complicated. In those cases surgery may be required and the return to play may be between two to six months after surgery. This is a decision your physician will have to make with you. In conclusion, strengthening and stretching your muscles and joints will keep you playing without pain. Dr. Moya is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in knee and shoulder surgery. He completed his doctoral fellowship at Harvard University, receiving his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Robert Wood Johnson Medical School). Dr. Moya completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Puerto Rico. He practices at the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine located in Weston at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, (954) 389-5900, and in Pembroke Pines at 17842 NW 2nd Street, (954) 430-9901.

personal tragedy nearly four years ago, Plantation resident Heather Geronemus has made it her mission to end drunk and drugged driving in Broward County. Recently, the 33-year old woman brought together more than 1,000 people dedicated to the same goal. They all turned out for the 2013 Walk Like MADD & MADD Kari Miller and Plantation resident Heather Geronemus (photo credit: Jarret Streiner) Dash presented by Ultimate Software and AutoNation. “When I looked out over the crowd, I was overwhelmed the community’s response,” said Geronemus, the Chairwoman of the event. “I think MADD is an organization people don’t feel attached to until they have something happen to them, like I did.” The mission began for Geronemus four years ago, when she lost her father, Dr. Robert Geronemus, to a drunk driver. Since then, she has helped MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) Broward raise more than $200,000 in the fight against drunk driving. This year’s 5K event was held April 28 at Huizenga Park in Fort Lauderdale and drew a record number of participants. Geronemus said each year they see more and more people from the community, and not just those who have been affected by drunk drivers. “I am passionate about opening MADD up so we include everyone before they have a tragic loss,” said Geronemus, who works for Ultimate Software. This year, participants were encouraged by two-time Paralympic silver medalist Kari Miller, who lost both her legs to a drunk driver in 1999. Miller joined the U.S. Paralympics Women’s Sitting Volleyball National Team in 2006, and two years later helped the team earn a silver medal in the Beijing Games. She The starting line at the 2013 Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash also served as a starter for Team USA when they took the silver medal at the 2010 Sitting Volleyball World Championships. “Having her there, telling her story, and just seeing her on stage, I think makes it real for the people who see her,” Geronemus said. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is the nation’s largest nonprofit working to protect families from drunk driving and underage drinking. MADD also supports drunk and drugged driving victims and survivors at no charge, serving one person every nine minutes. The proceeds from the 5K will benefit MADD Broward’s community education, victim support services and youth programs. “If my event can reach one person and encourage them to make a better decision, or plan ahead, or not drink and drive in anyway, then I’ve accomplished a major goal,” Geronemus said. If you’d like to help, donations will be accepted through June at www.walklikemadd.org/fortlauderdale. You can also call the group’s Weston office at 850-983-6775. New Accolades for History Making Student-Athlete By Julie Levin

sity football at South Plantation High School last year, she wasn’t expecting the spotlight that came with being first female high school quarterback in the state, nor the accolades that have followed all year long. “I didn’t think anyone would care. I just wanted to play,” said the 18-year old. But Erin’s exploits drew not only local, but national attention, and just before graduation, Erin received yet two more accolades for her all around success. On April 25, the 18-year old, who maintained a 4.35 cumulative grade point average, was honored by the South Florida High School Sports as their Scholar-Athlete of the Month for basketball, as well as the National High School Coaches Association/GTM Sportswear Athlete of the Month Honor. Both awards were presented in the South Plantation High auditorium before hundreds of
“I didn’t think anyone would care. I just wanted to play.” Erin DiMeglio family, friends and staff members. “Our honorees are usually great students, well-rounded kids and have excelled in a particular sport in that month,” said Jaime Ferraro, the Director of for the National High School Coaches Association.
DiMeglio has done all that, and more. She lettered all four years in basketball and was the first female high school quarterback in Florida. Erin played in four games for the varsity boys Paladins football squad this past season, running the offense and even completing a pass. In the classroom, Erin was a student in South Plantation’s Magnet Program and was dual enrolled at Broward College. Through it all, she maintained a 4.35 cumulative grade point average.”The fact that she can balance all of that, play three varsity sports, makes us so proud,” said mom Kathleen DiMeglio. Erin also recently received a $20,000 scholarship from Foot Locker Scholar Athlete Program and Do Something.Org. DiMeglio has been accepted into the University of Central Florida, where sister Amy attends, and plans to major in biology and try out for their Division One basketball program. She takes with her a host of honors: the Florida Achievement Award from the National Commission on the Status of Women and features on the Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS Morning Show, ESPN.com, as well as the November 2012 Sports Illustrated Kids Magazine. While never expecting to become a role model, she knows her actions send an important message to young girls: that they can’t let traditional barriers stop them from doing what they want to do. “It gives people hope that they can go out and play a sport that most guys play,” she said.

Attention Homeowners – South Florida Foreclosure “Rocket Docket” in Full Swing By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
F
lorida has some of the highest foreclosure numbers in the
U.S., and Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties have the largest backlog of foreclosure cases in the State. In response to this backlog, all three counties have now instituted their own system to expedite review and resolution of foreclosure cases, which many have referred to as a “rocket docket.” If you are at risk of foreclosure or in foreclosure proceedings, you must read this article closely or you may lose your home. Consistent with its nickname, the new “rocket docket” system reduces the time it takes for a foreclosure case to be brought to trial. Some foreclosure cases are being set for trial by the court within 6 months of the court filing date, sometimes over the objection of the parties. From 40 to more than 100 cases are currently being scheduled for trial before the same judge, during the same trial calendar in just one day. A trial in some cases is concluded within just a few minutes without any meaningful opportunity for the homeowner to present defenses to the foreclosure case. In fact, many cases are being set for trial before the homeowner is permitted to conduct an investigation into the validity of the mortgage documents and proper transfer of foreclosure rights.
As part of the “rocket docket” initiative, retired judges have also been hired on a temporary basis solely to preside over these massive foreclosure trial calendars. While these retired judges are all very competent, they cannot possibly be as familiar with the facts or the law of the case as the actual division judge assigned to each foreclosure case. Attempts to postpone trial dates are routinely denied as part of the “rocket docket” initiative, even if all the attorneys agree that trial should be postponed. In short, Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties have adopted a “trial at all costs” policy that is not only detrimental to the homeowner who stands to lose their home without sufficient due process, but also to the bank’s attorneys who may not have all the necessary documents to proceed with trial. If there was ever a time for South Florida homeowners to hire an experienced and competent law firm to defend a foreclosure, the time is right now in view of the “rocket docket” system. There are fewer defenses being seriously considered by judges during foreclosure trials, and only limited grounds upon which a trial date will be postponed. More importantly, homeowners need to have a clear and defined plan of action in order to save their homes. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www. arcialawfirm.com for more information.

Packing Financial Sense For Your Summer Vacation By Nancy Rappaport, President and CEO of PriorityONE Credit Union of Florida
S
ummer is almost here! As you leisurely sip your morning coffee, with sand and sun on your mind, take a look at some ideas we have to keep your vacation plans on track. Whether your plans include sandy beaches, road trips, airplane rides or backyard parties, being financially prepared for your vacation adds to the fun. Here are some financial tips that will help you stay within your vacation budget and take away the worry: Credit Cards-If you plan on using your credit card to pay for your vacation, do some research first. Confirm that you are paying the lowest rate possible. If not, try to get the rate lowered through your current lender. Explore your options, financial institutions such as Credit Unions offer low fixed rate credit cards. Look for credit cards that truly enhance your lifestyle with benefits such as, reward points for free travel and merchandise, no annual fees, interest-free grace periods on purchases and so much more. Vacation Loans-Many financial institutions offer vacation loans so you can have the cash you need for that great vacation. Ask your bank or credit union about a low fixed rate vacation loan with no prepayment penalty. This loan can also be used to consolidate higher interest rate loans and lower your monthly payments. Vacation Club Account-A Vacation Club account provides you with an easy and systematic way to save money all year long for your vacation. You can autho-
rize a set dollar amount to be deposited into this account each pay period. Many financial institutions pay interest on this account. After all the hard work of saving, you need to protect what’s yours. Use these simple safety tips to protect your money as well as your identity: ▸▸ Clear out your wallet/purse before you go on vacation. Remove extra credit cards, anything with your social security number and your checkbook. Take only two credit cards. Use one for major purchases and keep the other as a back-up. ▸▸ Make a list of your credit card numbers and the 800 numbers listed on the back of the cards or photocopy the front and back. Leave this information with a friend or relative at home. Credit cards have limited liability and can easily be replaced. ▸▸ Consider using the traditional travelers’ checks or traveler’s check cards. If lost or stolen they can easily be replaced. ▸▸ Use ATMs located near banks, credit unions, in airports or hotels. ▸▸ When you use your credit or debit card, make sure the correct card was returned to you before you put it back in your wallet. Follow these simple tips and enjoy the great vacation you deserve… For additional information about vacation loans, please call 954-335-5100, visit our website at www.priorityonefl.org or stop by one of our offices located at 3000 N. y name is David Scott Bieber, DVM, P.A. I am a Veterinarian at Sheridan West Animal Clinic in Cooper City, Florida. I have an interesting story with a happy ending. My family and I had a Chocolate Labrador named Bruno, born 06/28/1997. Back in the end of 2008, Bruno was about 11 years old and started to have a hard time using his hind legs. He started having trouble getting up and trouble walking. We started anti-inflammatory therapy, pain management and adequan injections. By the end of December, Bruno was paralyzed in both hind legs. We took digital radiographs, and sent them to a Radiologist, which was concluded that he had chronic intervertebral disk disease in both cervical (neck) and lumbar (back) spines. This probably caused disk herniation with spinal cord compression at one or more sites. The prognosis was poor. To make a long story short, my family & I decided to put Bruno in a wheelchair on walks. Bruno was still very happy wagging his tail and eating. But nonetheless it was heart breaking watching him pull himself everywhere in the house. Bruno at this point was still on anti-inflammatories, glucosamine and adequan injections. Then, I began to think how will Bruno walk again if he has muscle weakness, muscle atrophy, and lack of bone density in his back legs and spine. I came up with the idea to give Bruno Testosterone injections once monthly, the idea being that testosterone maintains muscle mass and increases bone density. And, if you think about it, most dogs are neutered and have zero levels of testosterone to begin with. We were not giving body building doses, just enough to maintain muscle mass, so if his spinal cord damage ever healed he would be able to walk again. Five months went by in that wheelchair, and then Bruno started to walk again. Bruno died at 14 years old of chronic kidney disease which is their natural way of going. He walked until the end. I have been doing research since 2008 in the use of testosterone injections in the geriatric canine with incredible results. We are using it mainly on large breed dogs that are neutered, that are having a hard time getting up. These illnesses include arthritis, vertebral disk degeneration, hip dysplasia, muscle atrophy and degenerative joint disease. I have been using this treatment for the last 4 years, and it’s been and continue to be very successful with great results. 25% of all canines could benefit from this treatment! These injections are not expensive to give, either.

Firefighters never know what kind of rescue they’ll be called on to make. Look closely (top left) – you’ll see a kitty trapped underneath a car. Firefighter Roger James immediately crawled under the vehicle and saved the day. The kitten was uninjured but taken to a nearby Veterinarian’s office anyway for a quick check-up.
