Christmas Tree Exhibit Delights With Sight and Sound By Julie Levin
A
n exhibit that began as a small summertime
fundraiser, and is now one of the City’s best known winter traditions, is once again ready to entertain anyone with a touch of the holiday spirit. Winter Wonderland at Plantation Historical Museum, an annual exhibit featuring Christmas trees decorated in dozens of different themes, opened its doors to visitors December 5 and organizers are promising an impressive display. “We have 42 trees this year,” said Shirley Schuler, the recently-retired Curator of the Museum. “Most of our favorites are here and some new ones.” As many as 6,000 people are expected to visit the annual exhibit which will run through January 4th at the museum, located at 511 North Fig Tree Lane in Plantation. Inside, guests will find 42 beautifully themed trees and cultural displays, a Hanukkah Exhibit, Victorian Dollhouse, Porcelain Village with miniature train, as well as animated & musical figurines. everywhere, Santa Claus will first make an early Christmas Eve visit to the children of Plantation, not by sleigh, but by police and fire escort. As they have for nearly five decades, the City is once again organizing its annual “Santa’s Visit” to bring some early holiday cheer to residents. “It is basically something that the residents and their families look forward to every year,” said Cheryl Greenberg, Publicity Coordinator for the City. “Santa’s Visit” will take place throughout the City in the early evening hours of December 24. 17 teams of Santa and his elves will ride down Plantation’s streets, preceded by a police car with sirens blaring announcing their arrival. Santa will wave to the children, and hand out candy canes. The annual Christmas Eve event began in the early 1960s. On Christmas Eve each year, Mayor Jim Ward would dress as Santa and travel Plantation’s streets wishing children and adults a Merry Christmas. In 1966, Plantation was growing so the City Council agreed to let the tradition grow with it. The event grew to three motorcades so all of the Plantation children would get to see Santa. Now the mission takes on an even bigger scope thanks to the City’s tremendous growth over the years. Greenberg says it takes a small army of volunteers, City staff members and their family members to make up the 17 different Santa teams, complete with elves, sleighs and police escort. All come together to help give the children an early visit with St.Nick. “We thank all of the volunteers and City employees who continue to make this unique Plantation tradition possible,” she said. Santa’s Visit will happen on Tuesday, December 24 between 5 and 10 p.m. Children and their parents simply need to listen for the sirens announcing his arrival and then head outside to wait curbside. Santa will be giving out candy canes to all the boys and girls waiting for him. For more information, call 954-452-2510.

Installation and Gala Formally Welcomes New Rabbi By Julie Levin

Kol Ami Emanu-El formally moved into a new phase of its history. The Plantation synagogue recently held a weekend’s worth of events to welcome its new spiritual leader. Though Rabbi Howard Needleman assumed the post in July, the November 1st and 2nd Installation and Gala was his official welcome. “The excitement of moving forward into the 21st century and building a strong Jewish identity for Temple Kol Ami Emanu-el was never as apparent as this past weekend’s Installation Gala for Rabbi Howard Needleman,” said Calvin Helitzer, Temple President. “The overwhelming joy that ebbed from all in attendance, young and old, was obvious. We have truly ‘Passed the Torch’ from one generation to another, building on the strength of our past to the greatness of the future.” The synagogue held a Shabbat Installation service on November 1 which was open to the community. The next night, close to 250 people came out to welcome Rabbi Needleman with dinner and dancing at the Welcome Gala. Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El began the search for a new spiritual leader following the retirement of longtime senior Rabbi Sheldon Harr, who now serves as the “Founding Senior Rabbi Emeritus.” Rabbi Needleman comes to South Florida from Temple Beth David in New York. One of his goals is to inspire a love of Judaism in others by creating a modern house of worship where spirituality and interactive programming is available for all generations. He and temple leaders bill it as a “new beginning” in keeping with today’s times. “Part of my vision is to create a modern reform temple that is both engaged in how we are within the Synagogue walls, with our worship, our learning and outreach to all that seek to make Kol Ami Emanu-El their spiritual home,” he said.

Plantation Battalion Chief Honored by Lifesaving Organization By Julie Levin

Department’s Public Information Officer, was recently recognized for his efforts in helping to protect some of our communities most vulnerable citizens. Gordon, a Battalion Chief, was honored for helping to make sure fire stations throughout the state are designated as Safe Havens for newborn babies. The honor was handed down by A Safe Haven For Newborns organization at their recent annual gala. “I am humbled and honored to be recognized by such a hard working and committed group of people,” said Gordon. “The passion and dedication that all the Safe Haven people put forward every day to help saving young lives, is unmatched. I am thrilled to be able to contribute even the smallest portion to that great effort.” The organization honored three local professionals at their 3rd annual gala, “A Wonderland in Safe Haven,” which was held November 9th at the Trump National in Doral. In addition to honoring Gordon and Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of Miami Children’s Hospital, Deise Granado-Villar, the organization presented its coveted Monarch Award to Kathie Sigler, retired Provost and President of the Miami Dade College Medical Center Campus. Established in 2001, A Safe Haven for Newborns was created to save the lives of newborns in danger of being abandoned and to help preserve the health and future of their mothers thru education, prevention and community
involvement. In September, they reached a critical milestone; the saving of its 200 baby when a child was left at a hospital in Escambia County. The organization honored Gordon for his work in helping secure fire stations, throughout Florida, as Safe Havens for newborn babies. Through a conversation in 2001 with then Sunrise Assistant Fire Chief Kingman Schuldt, Gordon learned about a man who was looking to provide anonymous alternatives for mothers in crisis, who were considering abandoning their newborn babies. “After a conversation with Nick Silverio, the founder of Safe Haven, we discussed the possibility of being able to leave babies at local fire stations. We discussed how distressed mothers might know which fire stations to leave them at. We decided on big signs similar to the “Safe Place” signs already in place. I then approached the Florida Fire Chiefs Association (FFCA) as a method of endorsing the program statewide. They did so and the rest is history,” said Gordon. The Safe Haven statute allows a mother to leave her newborn child, up to seven days old, in the custody of hospital staff or at a fire station, without fear of legal actions. All newborns are placed for adoption by private licensed adoption agencies. A Safe Haven for Newborns is dedicated to reaching and assisting pregnant girls/women before they reach the crisis stage. The lifeline of the organization is their statewide 24/7 multilingual helpline.

Nob Hill Road in Plantation, held its Red Ribbon Week October 28-November 1 to take a visible stand against drugs. The school hosted a week’s worth of activities for the students and staff to take part in. Monday, everyone wore sunglasses and their CPE shirt to “Shade Out Drugs.” Tuesday, they “Put a Cap on Drugs” by wearing crazy hats. Later in the

week, they wore tie dye to “Say Peace Out to Drugs,” wore sports jerseys to “Team Up Against Drugs” and wore red to signify “It’s Up to Me to Be Drug Free.” Created in 1985, the Red Ribbon Campaign is now the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation reaching millions of young people. The Red Ribbon is seen as a symbol of intolerance towards the use of drugs.

South Plantation Staffers Pick Nominees for County Recognition By Julie Levin
W
hen picking its nominees
for the Broward County School District’s employee recognition programs, the staff at South Plantation High School relied a little bit on history. For the second time in a decade, the staff selected two familiar names: Jennifer Collins for Teacher of the Year and Nancy Blackman for non-instructional employee of the year. It’s the same duo that was nominated ten years ago, making it all the way to the final round. “I am amazed and proud that my staff has such a high opinion of me,” said Collins, a 1990 South Plantation graduate. “When I go to work every day, I set out to do what is right. I am not looking for praise or awards. I am an alumnus of South Plantation. so I Teacher of the Year nominee guess it’s in my blood.” Jennifer Collins Collins has been at the school since 1997, where she juggles many different roles. She teaches seven periods, including American Sign Language, Peer Counseling and Leadership. She’s also the Student Government, Key Club and Peer Counseling Club advisor, responsibilities that mean plenty of afterschool, nighttime and weekend events. Though she has two children of her own, Collins is passionate about getting her students involved in school, believing that with involvement comes motivation and desire to stay in school. Proof of that--students and staff have selected her as
the school’s Teacher of the Year three times. “On graduation day, watching my seniors walk across the stage knowing I had a positive effect on help shaping them into young adults, I think that’s my greatest achievement,” she said. The South Plantation staff also selected Secretary Nancy Blackman as the school’s 2013-14 Non-Instructional Staffer of the Year. She has been at the school since 1994 and plays a vital role handling many issues. Among them bus problems, parent phone calls to the assistant principals, the clinic and tracking discipline issues with all students. “She does everything and any document that goes home to the parents goes through Nancy,” said Non-instructional Employee of the Assistant Principal Ron Reed, who Year nominee Nancy Blackman added that Blackman has been “in charge of the AP office” for the entire time she has been a Paladin. Blackman makes it a priority to stay current with today’s changing technology. She has attended training programs for non-instructional school personnel to learn different software programs, new technology, and classes that help clerical staff stay up-to-date with district policy changes, and their jobs. “I try to help everyone who calls or comes by,” she said. “However, sometimes I have to tell myself to stay calm and bite my tongue before responding to their outlandish requests.”

Protect Your Health by Maintaining a Neutral Spine By Wendy Urso, P.T., C.L.T.
D
id you know that there is a way to get up
from your chair and even from your bed with a neutral spine? Typical, everyday activities such as sleeping, standing in a line, chopping your food at the kitchen counter and washing dishes run the risk of injuring one’s low back. However, there are ways to position yourself when doing daily activities that will protect your low back. The key to preventing a low back injury, and in healing a lumbar injury that has already occurred, is maintaining a neutral spine. Neutral spine refers to the position of your spine being in proper alignment where there is the least amount of stress placed upon the structures. The two muscle groups that protect your low back are the transverse abdominis, also known as abdominals, and the glutes, your buttocks. These two muscle groups must work synergistically, or together, to dynamically stabilize the lumbar spine. Contracting these muscle groups before movements like reaching, pushing, pulling or lifting will take the strain off of the lumbar spine structures and allow for healing and prevention of injury. There are a few ways to pick up items from the floor with a neutral spine: ▸▸ Lunge lift- “take a knee,” bring the object that you want to pick up as close to your body as possible, pick it up to your waist and then stand up. This is a good approach to lifting heavier objects, but you must have enough leg strength to do it effectively and
safely. ▸▸ Squat lift- this is the appropriate lift for taller objects that need to be lifted from the ground. This lift is good for picking up small children with neutral spine. ▸▸ “Golfers Lift”- this lift is named after the movement a golfer performs when removing his golf ball from the hole. There is a bend forward at the hip on one leg while the other leg comes up in the back. This allows most of the movement to come from the hips instead of the spine. This is also a good lift to use when reaching in to the washing machine. If you have ever had low back pain, you know you will do anything to avoid its return. Therefore, the key is to avoid causing injury from your daily activities. The techniques discussed here, when performed consistently, will help prevent low back pain. New Loan Modification Program Is 85% Successful By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
A
fter much anticipation , on April 1, 2013, the new Loss
Mitigation Mediation Program (“LMM”) was launched in all South Florida Bankruptcy Courts. This new program is in direct response to the frustration experienced by many homeowners who have tried to modify their home loans time and time again without success. The success rate for traditional loan modifications outside of bankruptcy is less than 20%. So far, however, about 85% of the eligible homeowners that have completed the LMM program have obtained permanent loan modifications with significantly better loan terms. Here are some of the other benefits of the LMM Program that you need to consider: ▸▸ Under the LMM program, the foreclosure process stops immediately and any foreclosure sale date is automatically cancelled. ▸▸ The entire program is court supervised. A mediator will be appointed to your case. All negotiations must be concluded and a decision rendered within 150 days of the date a mediation Order is signed by the Court. ▸▸ The other frustrating feature for homeowners about conventional loan modification applications is the fact that lenders continuously misplace documents or require updated documents. Under the LMM program, there are no more “lost documents” by the bank, since all documents are uploaded to a single website to which all parties have immediate access. ▸▸ If the lender refuses to provide a timely response to a completed loan modification application, or even refuses to participate in the program, the homeowner now has the right to seek assistance from a federal judge to ensure that the lender complies with its obligations. This enforcement component is simply not available to homeowners trying to do a loan modification on their own. ▸▸ The program applies to both Chapter 7 and 13 if you are surrendering a property, but loan modifications under the LMM are only available under a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. ▸▸ There is an increased likelihood that your Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Plan will be confirmed by the Trustee given that once the mortgage loan is modified under LMM, the homeowner’s future financial picture is more clearly defined. While these are exciting new benefits for any homeowner struggling with a loan modification of their mortgage, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy petition is NOT a do it yourself proposition. In fact, many consumers attempt to file their own and their cases are dismissed with prejudice for 180 days for failure to comply with the Bankruptcy Code. This means that you cannot refile for bankruptcy during that time. Any homeowner even considering this alternative must seek sound legal advice from attorneys with Chapter 13 bankruptcy experience, like the knowledgeable staff at the Arcia Law Firm. Certain foot types are more predisposed to twisting and overuse injuries. Dancers are prone to different types of injuries including: 1. Achilles Tendon – Injuries are due to inflexibility and overuse of the tendon. They are more common in dancers who are flatfooted and go barefoot. Stiffness and soreness are present after getting up from sitting. The pain usually starts to feel better with activity but recurs later. Rest, ice, therapy and occasionally a short period of immobilization may be necessary to allow the area to heal. 2. Impingement Syndromes – Pain in the front or back of the ankle can occur from a dancer standing “on point” or “demi point”. The pain in the back of the ankle is made worse by the foot pointing down and may be caused by a small fracture to the cartilage in the back of the ankle (“painful os trigonum”). Pain in the front of the ankle is usually caused by thickening of the ankle joint lining and can cause pain while moving the leg forward on the foot. Immediate treatment with temporary immobilization followed by physical therapy may be necessary to allow the injury to heal. Surgery may be necessary if unresponsive to conservative care. This can include an arthroscopy to the ankle, which will allow a dancer to resume activities in most cases within a week. An impingement on the back of the ankle may require an open or arthroscopic procedure that will allow the dancer to resume activities in approximately two to four weeks. 3. Fractures – Overuse bone injuries are common and can cause stress fractures to the foot or leg. Pinpoint pain and low-grade swelling usually are present on the bone. These injuries need to be immobilized in a cast or walking boot. During this time cross training is allowed to keep the dancer fit. Cartilage injuries to the ankle joint (“osteochondral fractures”) may also be present which would cause chronic pain and low-grade swelling to the ankle. 4. Ankle ligaments – Can be injured due to twisting the foot down and under. Pain, swelling and discoloration may be present. Immediate treatment with temporary immobilization followed by physical therapy may be necessary to allow the injury to heal. If chronic instability develops, surgery may be necessary to completely restore mobility to the ankle and allow the dancer to resume all activities. Prognosis is usually excellent. 5. Sesamoid injuries – The sesamoids are small bones on the ball of the foot near the big toe that bear weight. Frequent jumping or overloading may cause the bone to break or injure the cartilage that covers them. Tenderness is felt directly on the bone and the dancer will be unable to participate. Temporary immobilization in a boot usually allows them to heal. Surgery may be necessary if conservative treatment fails. location in 1991. As a second generation family business, the company wanted to offer a broader range of lighting and energy saving products to its commercial customer base. We could also see the need for more choices in residential lighting as a major trend of new home construction and development was taking place in South Florida. We opened our facility at Nob Hill Rd & (the newly opened) I-595 to cater to this need. Imperial was the only business developed in the area and for the first couple years stood alone as a pioneer to this “new area”.

hundreds of years experience selecting energy saving lighting products and systems. Today, the market is moving swiftly to embrace the opportunities offered with the new wave of LED energy products. A few years back the company developed an “outdoor lighting park” to help its customers to see product choices, rather than merely choose from catalogs. There were plenty of tiny superheroes, pirates and princesses when the City of Plantation’s Parks & Recreation Department and the Plantation Police Department held their annual A Family Halloween & Safety Festival. Thousands of kids in costume stopped by Volunteer Park October 26 for the annual festival, which featured free Halloween bags and candy. There was also a children’s carnival, games and activities, a puppet show, inflatable’s, hayrides, and a spooky “Zombie Diner” for the older kids.
