Spring has Sprung

iving in South Florida, we do not get to experience the chang-
ing seasons, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate them. As we usher in spring this month, let us take a moment to appreciate the new buds on the trees and warmer weather. With Spring Break almost here, why not spend some time as a family enjoying the many splendors of our sunshine state. Why shouldn’t we enjoy all the benefits of living in the so-called “Spring Break Capital of the World.” Where else can you see alligators in their natural habitat and Mickey and friends in their not-so-natural habitat – all in the same day? Where else can you get a sunburn at the beach during the day and endless entertainment all night? Where else can you go flats fishing on a secluded sandbar and cruising the intracoastal dining scene -- all on the same boat trip? Only in South Florida! On this happy note, let’s enjoy all that our state has to offer and let’s have some FUN.

Seniors Hone Pottery Skills in Teapot Competition By Debby Teich
P
ottery is one of the many classes offered at the Southwest
Focal Point Community Center in Pembroke Pines. Students in the class have the opportunity to hone their pottery skills and explore their creativity, as they learn how to work with clay and throw pottery. Recently, they also had the chance to participate in a friendly competition to develop an original teapot. Leroy Daniels, pottery instructor, came up with the idea for the contest when he realized that many of his students had never attempted to make a teapot. He thought that the contest would help motivate the students and offered the winner a piece of his original pottery. Some of the students drew inspiration from the childhood rhyme “I’m a Little Teapot,” while others relied on their imaginations and international backgrounds to design and create their own version of a clay teapot. Once all of the students completed Pottery students proudly display their handmade teapots. their teapots, the judges
voted to determine which one was the most original. Buck Horvath was declared the winner. His winning teapot was built entirely by hand with meticulously shaped coils of clay. Horvath, along with his wife Joan, plan to showcase their treasure while pouring tea. Daniels holds a Masters Degree in Art Education from Penn State University. In the last 40 years, he has been an art teacher and art department head at several Dade County Public High Schools. Although Daniels teaches all areas of art, most consider him to be an expert in ceramic arts. Daniels has already issued the next challenge for his students – clay whistles. As his students began making sketches of possible clay whistles and experimenting with balls of clay, he gazed around the classroom and said, “To enrich the lives of others and be enriched Buck Horvath with his winning teapot. – who could ask for anything more out of life?” Judy Thal of Pembroke Pines loves attending the class. “This pottery class is the most wonderful, creative and diversified class I have ever taken,” said Thal. “Mr. Daniels is an outstanding teacher. He provides us with a great amount of resources and examples. He also presents many demonstrations to help us learn this beautiful art form.” For information, call 954-450-6888 or visit www.ppines.com.

T
he City of Pembroke Pines is dedicated to providing programs
and services that enhance the quality of life for its senior population. On January 19, the City was honored three times for its efforts at the Aging & Disability Resource Center of Broward County 32nd Annual Board/Advisory Council Installation Dinner. The Aging & Disability Resource Center (ADRC) is known as the “One-Stop Shop” for finding information regarding services in Broward County available for seniors, persons with severe and persistent mental illness, ages 18 and over, their families, and caregivers. The City of Pembroke Pines received the Fair Share Award for contributing its full fair share in requested matching funds for 30 consecutive years. “The City of Pembroke Pines has a long history with the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Broward County,” said Edith Lederberg, ADRC’s Executive Director. “Pembroke Pines City Manager Charlie Dodge began his career as the Director of the Senior Services Division and the City continues to be supportive for the seniors of Pembroke Pines and Broward County.” City Attorney Samuel S. Goren was named the Pembroke Pines Volunteer of the Year. Goren Commissioner Jack McCluskey, City was president of ADRC in Manager Charles F. Dodge and the 80’s, when he was only Commissioner Carl 28 years old. At the time, Shechter with the Fair Share award. he was asked why he was
so committed at such a young age. He replied, “Someday I will mature and I hope that someone will care about me as much as I care about them.” Goren has been ADRC’s pro bono attorney for more than 30 years. “The ADRC does a tremendous amount of good for the elderly community.” Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing, was awarded the Project Personality of the Year. As Community Services Director of the City of Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Senior Center, Shechter oversees its Adult Day Care Services, Health Support Services, Social Services, Transportation, Counseling, Recreational Activities, Nutrition Programs and much more. He meets with leaders of other senior centers on a regular basis to share ideas. “We cherish all of the people who come to the Senior Center and do our best to offer them the most innovative programming possible,” said Schecter. “Although I received the award, it actually belongs to everyone who works at the Center. Our success is a function of everything we do collectively.” For information, visit www.ppines.com.

Studio 18 Presents Symbolic Visions by debby teich
S
tudio 18 in the Pines’ latest exhi-
bition, “Symbolic Visions,” has been attracting visitors from all over South Florida. It features the work of Claudio PerezLeon, Judy Polstra, Ernesto Kunde and Marilyn Garcia. The free show will remain on display through March 30. Studio 18 is dedicated to promoting the arts and introducing the community to working artists in Pembroke Pines. The 11,000 sq. ft. studio provides affordable space for emerging and midcareer juried artists. Studio 18 also hosts exhibitions, workshops, lectures and classes. Studio 18 welcomes groups and organizations who want to tour the facility. The main gallery and classrooms are available to rent for private functions. Studio 18 in the Pines is located at 1101 Poinciana Dr., in Pembroke Pines. Regular gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mon. to Fri. and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sat. For information or a class schedule, visit www.ppines.com/studio18; call 954-961-6067 or send an email to rvegas@ ppines.com.
Claudio Perez - Leon’s wall sized paintings mix ancestral references and his Peruvian roots with literature and religious icons. His thoughtful use of patterns, colors and symbolic figures seize the viewer’s attention and captivate the senses.
Judy Postra, a self taught artist, is well known for her bejeweled and buttoned figures and furniture. Her sculptural assemblages are truly one-of-a-kind creations that are born from her vivid imagination. Each “twisted mosaic” is embellished with assorted found objects and relics and speak of private feelings, dreams or abstract thoughts.
Marilyn Garcia’s black and white photography series Homeless portrays a glimpse into life on the streets of Fort Lauderdale. These portraits convey raw emotions of young and old less fortunate souls. Her passion for this forgotten segment of our population unfolds into a story we all need to hear.
Ernesto Kunde, a native of Brazil, likes to experiment with a variety of media, techniques and subjects. His inspiration comes from what he sees around him. His current work features vibrant paintings that are a tribute to Miami. He captures historic and iconic landmarks in black and white with a touch of color. Another series focuses on political events and darker themes using charcoal on found wood.

This 11,000 square-foot creative re-use facility was transformed from a dilapidated state hospital laundry into an arts center that offers arts classes and showcases contemporary art. The Glass Gallery, on the ground floor lobby of Pembroke Pines City Hall, is also a magnet that draws art lovers to view numerous exhibits of art collections that rotate. An exhibition of artwork by extremely talented students from our local schools recently received wide acclaim. Pembroke Pines is now nationally recognized as a city with a strong arts and culture commitment, because of our arts venues such as the City hall Glass Gallery, the Fletcher Center for the Arts, the Susan B. Katz Theater of the Performing Arts at the River of Grass ArtsPark, the artists’ studios at Studio 18 and the 9-11 Memorial sculptures at City Center. Each year, the City underwrites nine free outdoor jazz performances that feature local jazz musicians. It also hosts the Pembroke Pines Arts Festival, an annual, two-day, outdoor arts celebration that features the work of nearly 100 artists and attracts more than 15,000 visitors each year. I would like to offer a special thanks to the Chair of the Arts and Culture Board Rosemarie Colombo, and to the Cultural Arts Coordinator Robyn Vegas, as well as our Director of Parks & Recreations Dean Combs. I can’t emphasize enough the benefits of having an active arts community here in Pembroke Pines. In the midst of a cloudy economic outlook that we hear about daily, this accolade is a silver lining that our community can be proud of. As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to contact me at fortis@ppines.com or call my office at 954-435-6505.

Silver Lakes Students Visit with the City of Miramar By Debby Teich
S
tudents from Silver Lakes Elementary in Miramar now have a
better idea of how the City of Miramar operates. Last month, the students had an opportunity to visit several City departments for some on-the-job training. They met the people who work there, learned about their jobs, and gained a better understanding of what they need to learn in school to do those jobs. The five 4th grade classes have been participating in Kids and the Power of Work (KAPOW), a program designed to connect a student’s classroom learning to their future in the work place. Throughout the school year, volunteers from the City of Miramar have been meeting with the students to teach them about the importance of community involvement, leadership, communication and teamwork. The program culminated with a visit to the workplace. The Silver Lakes students were split into four groups and each one visited a different City department. At the end of the day, all of the students gathered at Miramar Regional Park, where they enjoyed lunch together and had a chance to share what they had learned. “Each City service represents hundreds of different jobs and careers that these students never knew existed,” said John Casbarro, KAPOW program coordinator in South Florida. “They are now career possibilities for these young people as they progress toward graduation.” One group of students visited the Youth Enrichment Center, where they talked about reading, learning and athletic programs. They discussed what it takes to develop these programs and had a chance to participate in a variety of sports activities. At the Police Department, students were involved in a simulated crime scene. They entered a roped off area to take photos and record information that would help them solve as crime. Students who visited the Waste Water Treatment Plant learned where the water goes when they flush the toilet and how waste water is converted to reusable water. Students who went to the Human Resources Department discovered what it means to be a City Commissioner, Mayor and City Clerk. They also got a lesson in bullying and how it is handled in the adult work place. “Bullying in school can have lasting effects on a student’s ability to learn and cope on a daily basis,” said Natasha N. Hampton, Human Resources Director for the City of Miramar. “If we do not correct this problem when the kids are young, it will recur in the work place when they are adults.” The City of Miramar has participated in the KAPOW program for the past 14 years. It currently partners with four Miramar elementary schools. “It is a great way for the kids to see the government in action,” said Hampton. “We look forward to continuing the partnership.” For information on KAPOW, visit www.kapowlfs.org; send an email to john.casbarro@gmail.com or call 954-680-3916. Chapel Trail Students Are Counting Their Change By Debby Teich
S
tudents at C hapel T rail
Elementary in Pembroke Pines recently got a lesson in dollars and cents. Last month, executives from the Power Financial Credit Union met with students in seven 5th grade math classes to teach them about money management and financial responsibility. The students talked about things that they need to save for, such as movie tickets, cars and college. They discussed piggy banks, savings accounts, CD’s, investments and other savings vehicles. The students completed hands-on math problems relating to percentages, interest rates and dividends. They learned how to add and subtract in a check register. They also talked about how easy it is to deplete your savings if you are not careful how you spend your money. “I was very impressed that most of the students said they had already been saving their money,” said Christine Marino, Director of Training, who spoke to the students. “It is important for kids to learn financial responsibility at a young age.” Although this is the first time that Power
Financial has implemented the math lesson, it has had a partnership with the school for the past three years. Every month, representatives visit the school during lunchtime for Gator Teller Days. Students with accounts at the credit union bring in their pennies, nickels, dimes and dollars to the mock teller to be counted in the cafeteria. A student teller, assisted by a Power Financial Credit Union employee, counts the deposit and issues a deposit slip. The student not only saves his money, but earns tokens redeemable for prizes from the credit union. “The kids get so excited for Gator Teller Days,” said Marlene Warheit, 3rd grade teacher. “They bring Ziploc bags filled with money that they received for their birthdays or for doing chores. They see how their balance increases each time they make a deposit. It is a wonderful way to teach them about the importance of saving.” For information on Power Financial Credit Union, visit www.powerfi.org. or many years I have lived, worked, raised a
family and have been your Mayor in Miramar. During this time, I have had the unique perspective of watching our City grow through many phases. In fact, according to the U.S. Census, Miramar grew by a greater percentage than any other South Florida community. And much like a child growing into adulthood, I am in awe of how well our City has grown and prospered as a result of making sound budgetary decisions with a pragmatic approach to growth. We knew that these types of Miramar Mayor Lori C. Moseley actions were necessary for each phase of growth in order for the next phase to build successfully upon it. We, like many other cities, will continually face new rules, new economic circumstances, and a world that is ever changing. In essence, we are all now working in a “new normal” environment; one where we must constantly adapt. But unlike other cities, our great diversity is the strength that allows us to adapt. It unites us all, for a better quality of life, and a better tomorrow. Our diversity has made our City a shining example of how people can come together, work toward a common goal, and provide a variety of perspectives for dealing with issues. It is this team effort that has brought us to where we are today. It will especially be important during the next few months, as we attempt to balance our budget. As we head into the budget cycle, we will be tasked again with making tough decisions. Regardless of the numbers, you can be assured that the Commission and City staff are exploring unique and different ways to maintain and improve the City’s quality of life. I hope that you will take the time to let your thoughts be known to your Commission on what types of services are most important to you. I also hope that you are able to share any cost saving and/or revenue enhancing measures the City can implement. We rely heavily on what our residents say, and most importantly, what they believe in. Please go to the Budget Citizen Input Form on our city website at http://www.ci.miramar. fl.us/budget/form/submit.asp and let us know what you think. Miramar is more than a city that just grew in population. Miramar is a city that grew united in the belief that differences did not matter, and what mattered was that we all believed in our community. For information on the City of Miramar, visit www.ci.miramar.fl.us.

Fairway Elementary Students Plant Their Own Garden By Debby Teich
F
or nearly two years, students at Fairway Elementary in Miramar
have been watching the Miramar Community Garden grow. Now, with the help of the “Fairway Farmers,” they are reaping the benefits of their own garden and enjoying fresh fruits, vegetable and herbs. Fairway Elementary and the Miramar Community Garden are located just a short distance apart. Last year they formed a partnership and several classes visited the garden and participated in a variety of activities. “It is important for students to understand where food comes from and to see that it is fun to grow their own,” said Scott Lewis, who has been volunteering at the Miramar Community Garden since it opened nearly two years ago. For Earth Day, the students made posters to hang on the fence of the
Community Garden. Garden volunteers also brought caterpillars to the school, so the students could watch them turn into butterflies. The program was so successful that the school decided to plant their own garden. Assistant Principal Thomas Nordstrom bought and built two planting beds. The Miramar Community Garden donated cilantro and native squash seeds. The school recently decided to expand the garden to seven beds and many were eager to help with the effort. Principal Josetta Campbell allocated a portion of the school’s beautification budget to help purchase the additional beds and soil. Students, teachers, faculty and volunteers from the Miramar Community Garden joined forces to plant the new beds. They planted carrots, cabbage, okra, beans, cucumbers, collard greens, sunflowers, basil, rosemary, cilantro and more. Each grade level is responsible for watering and taking care of different plants. “We are hoping that the kids will learn to make healthier choices,” said Pamela Haffner, teacher. “Ultimately, we plan to make soups, salads and salsas, so the kids can taste what they have grown.” Erika Bergstedt’s class has been helping in the garden. “We want to grow our garden even bigger next year,” said Bergstedt. “We are in the process of writing grants to help, but it is difficult to find funding these days.” The school is hoping to get donations from the community in the form of soil, seeds, seedlings, and garden furniture. For information or to make a donation, call 754-323-5650.

Developmental Delay from the Teacher’s Point of View By Brian D. Udell, MD FAAP
I
recently had the pleasure of observing my son,
who is a Special Education Teacher for 6th and 7th grade students in Denver, CO. That situation is similar to the school experience for many special students from all across the nation. By observing this group of Special Ed kids, the main medical diagnosis that I could ascertain was hyperactivity, with only a few who were actually autistic. The students had significant learning difficulties and severely disruptive behaviors. Some were on some type of medication, but most were not. As a result, the children, the student body and the staff have had to deal with a great deal of ‘acting out’ behaviors that required attention, time, mitigation and prevention strategies.

In spite of all of these preoccupations, what I found most interesting was the belief and effort that the teachers displayed that they would accomplish their goals and help the students learn skills to become successful adults. I was struck by the amount of time that the teachers spent coordinating their activities so that the more challenged kids moved pretty seamlessly in and out of the typical population. The staff was all fairly young, enthusiastic and bright young men and women who are obviously dedicated to their profession and their students. They worked as a team and they all appeared to be on the same page about which students required what intervention(s) in order to better their educational experience, rather than simply ‘house’ them until the day was over. The teachers were hard at work in their lounge from very early in the morning until long after the children had gone home. Then, there was the homework – lessons for the next day, calling the parents of the most troubled children and learning strategies to improve their performance. The teachers were very interested in my view about how the school was performing. “What do you think about Calvin (a particularly interesting but disruptive 11 year-old), Dr. Udell?” they would ask. “Did you have an interesting experience today?” Well, my main reaction was, “Geez, I really didn’t appreciate all of the difficulties that you guys face.” The experience certainly didn’t fit my recollection of elementary and middle school days in the last century. And, frankly, as part of my medical practice, I spend a great deal of time listening to parents talk about the school’s failure to address their particular child’s needs. So, what I have learned is this: It can be very instructive if parents take the time to observe what is really going on at school, rather than accept or even complain that, “It’s not enough.” I think that, if you (the parent) could possibly look through a one-way mirror, you might find it amazing that anything gets done at all. You might witness how much work it takes when even one child is unfocused and disruptive or acts out behaviorally. You might wonder how the teacher is able to re-focus the rest of the class and go on with lessons. It can’t all be put on the schools’ shoulders. More support, volunteerism, and/or assistance is in order. Teachers need your help, understanding and support. he shape and size of breasts, as well as the
breast tissue, changes over time like skin on other areas of the body. Weight loss, pregnancy, breast feeding, and the aging process can result in increased skin laxity and sagging of the breasts. A mastopexy, or breast lift procedure, can restore the contour of the breasts to a more youthful, attractive appearance, erasing years off a woman’s body by lifting and tightening the breasts. The natural development of breast tissue in young women can also result in breast ptosis or sagging. This is particularly true with a tuberous or tubular breast shape. This occurs when the breast develops with a normal base and restricted inframammary crease causing the breast tissue to herniate through the nipple and areola leaving the breast with a “tubular” shape. In cases where breasts are loose and sagging, a breast lift or mastopexy procedure can be performed. This procedure involves removing excess or redundant breast skin and then tightening the breast tissue and skin to raise the nipple and areola and “lift” the breast. How do I know if my breasts need to be lifted? Typically, a breast lift is indicated in patients whose nipple and areola are below the inframammary crease or fold beneath the breast. There are degrees of breast ptosis – first, second and third degree being the most severe with the nipple pointing downward. Depending on the severity of sagging, the surgical procedure involves removing skin from around the areola only (periareolar or Benelli lift), around the areola and then vertically along the midline of the breast (circumvertical or “lollipop” lift), and lastly all of the above incisions and a horizontal incision along the inframammary fold (inverted “T” or anchor). The procedure that is ideally suited for a particular patient depends on the degree of laxity, amount of breast tissue, and appearance goals of the individual patient. Breast lift surgery helps patients achieve a more attractive, youthful shape and contour, and better proportioned areolas. A mastopexy is often performed with breast augmentation when the patient desires an increase in breast size or a fuller appearance of the upper pole of the breast. Often times with aging, weight loss, and after breastfeeding, there is a loss of breast tissue volume or size as well as skin laxity. In these cases, a breast augmentation with a mastopexy is indicated. The addition of a breast implant doesn’t necessarily make the breast lift “last” longer – it provides an increase in size and fullness. Mastopexy surgery is most commonly done as an outpatient procedure. It takes 1 – 3 hours and requires 5 – 7 days of downtime prior to returning to typical daily activities with the exception of strenuous exercise and activity, which may take 4 – 6 weeks to resume. If a woman is considering a breast lift, she should have a consultation with a plastic surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and who has experience with breast enhancement surgery. Dr. Messa’s office is located at 2823 Executive Park Drive, in Weston. To schedule your complimentary consultation with Dr. Messa, call 954-659-7760.

Substance Abuse: Just Because It’s Common Doesn’t Make It Normal By Alina Gastesi-de Armas, MA, MEd, LMHC
I
n recent months I have heard countless accounts
of teenagers and young adults making life altering mistakes because of or in conjunction with substance abuse. What is most alarming to me, however, is the parent’s nonchalant attitude towards underage drinking and marijuana use. The most apparent issue needing attention is a lack of responsibility for personal behavior with regards to the parents and teenagers. A recent survey conducted by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University should serve as a serious wake-up call for all parents. The resulting statistics and figures quantify the behaviors of teens based upon the example and attitudes of their parents: ▸ 17-year-olds surveyed have witnessed one or both of their parents drunk and about a third of 12 to 17-year-olds have witnessed one or both of their parents drunk. ▸ Compared to young people who have not seen their parents drunk, teenagers who have are more than twice as likely to get drunk themselves in a typical month. ▸ Teens who get drunk regularly are three times more likely to use cannabis (marijuana) and smoke cigarettes. ▸ The use of marijuana and alcohol often leads to even more risky behavior involving alcohol, drugs and sex, and associating with others who are involved in harmful behavior including lawlessness. ▸ The drinking teens were 18 times more likely to have tried marijuana, three times more likely to have friends who use marijuana, and four times more likely to be able to get marijuana in an hour. ▸ These teens are nearly four times more likely to know peers who abuse prescription drugs and more than twice as likely to know peers who use illegal drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamines, heroin, ecstasy or LSD. The results that were most significant from this study are that teens’ behavior is strongly associated with their parents’ behavior and expectations, so parents who expect their children to drink and use drugs will have children who drink and use drugs. Parents are throwing their hands up in defeat with the statement, “Everybody is doing it. It’s normal.” Unfortunately, it is common but it is not normal for your child to drink and/or experiment with drugs. The importance of the role of fathers in the attitude of teens toward drinking is made very clear in the CASA survey. Those young people who believe their father secretly approves of their drinking are two and a half times more likely to get drunk in a typical month than teens who believe their father disapproves of their drinking. The message for parents is loud and clear. If your teen is drinking, the odds are your teen is getting drunk. Teens who get drunk are much likelier to try marijuana and hang out with friends who are abusing prescription as well as illegal drugs like cocaine and heroin. ur pets are now living longer, healthier lives
thanks to advances in medicine and preventative care, which includes vaccinations. Many people are concerned, however, about the possible risks associated with vaccinating their pet. Allergic reactions to vaccination and local injection-site irritation can occur, but are uncommon. Fortunately, the benefits far outweigh the risks. Vaccinations protect pets from potentially deadly infectious diseases such as parvovirus and distemper virus. They also help protect the public from diseases, such as rabies and leptospirosis, both of which can cause serious illness and death. Puppies and kittens usually receive their first vaccines at around 6-8 weeks of age and need to be repeated (booster vaccines) several more times. The booster vaccines are necessary because of antibodies that they have received from nursing that can neutralize the vaccines. These maternal antibodies decline during the first 3-4 months of life and eventually disappear. After the puppy/kitten series, the vaccines are repeated a year later. The vaccination schedule afterwards depends on the pet’s lifestyle and should be an individual choice made by you and your veterinarian. Pets that are primarily indoors still need to be vaccinated. Some diseases can be transmitted indirectly. For example, parvovirus is spread through contact with feces from an infected dog. Your dog can contract the virus without ever coming into contact with an infected dog. Exposure to the virus can occur through contact with feces found in a park or at the beach. Panleukopenia, a potentially fatal cat disease, is spread through contact with body fluids from an infected cat and can live in the environment for a very long time. The following is a list of the common vaccinations given to pets: ▸▸ Rabies: viral disease that affects all warm-blooded mammals and infects cells of the nervous system. Once the signs appear, it is always fatal. ▸▸ Canine distemper: virus that infects various tissues in the body causing diarrhea, fever, nasal and ocular discharge, respiratory disease, appetite and neurologic signs such as muscle spasms and paralysis. It is easily transmitted and often fatal. ▸▸ Infectious canine hepatitis: virus that infects the liver, kidneys, spleen and lungs. It can lead to death, chronic hepatitis or severe illness. ▸▸ Canine parvovirus: virus that causes diarrhea and vomiting, depression and loss of appetite. Many cases are fatal due to dehydration and malnutrition. ▸▸ Leptospirosis: bacterial infection that causes liver and kidney failure. It can also be transmitted to humans. ▸▸ Canine parainfluenza and bordetella: both common causes of respiratory infections, some which can progress to pneumonia. ▸▸ Feline Panleukopenia (aka feline distemper): virus that is highly contagious and often fatal. It causes fever, anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration and abdominal pain. ▸▸ Feline viral rhinotracheitis and calicivirus: highly contagious viruses that cause respiratory disease in cats. Signs often include nasal and ocular discharge, conjunctivitis, ulcers in the oral cavity, anorexia, depression and inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. There are other vaccinations available which may be necessary depending on your pet’s lifestyle. Your veterinarian can guide you on which vaccines are recommended for your pet. Vaccination is key for disease prevention. It is one of the most reliable and cost-effective methods of health care available. It also allows an opportunity for your veterinarian to examine your pet regularly. For more information on specific vaccines or vaccination guidelines, contact your veterinarian. ury is a two-year-old Jendaya Conure parrot. Her favorite
person is Joseph, her “daddy.” She loves anything that her beak can tear, poke, bend or break. She also loves to take baths, dance to her daddy playing the keyboard, and hang out on someone’s shoulder or hand. She does not like being ignored and always seeks attention. When anyone arrives at the house, she will yell and scream until that person says “hello” to her first. She was last seen climbing on her new toy and taking apart the bell.

Three Keys to an Effective Loan Modification By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
T
here are countless homeowners accepting loan modifications
in which their resulting payment is actually higher than their original mortgage payment, and the resulting principal balance owed is far greater than the home is worth. Still other homeowners end up losing their homes because they are unable to complete a loan modification before the home is sold at public auction. These homeowners were apparently unaware of the following three keys to an effective and sustainable loan modification.
Principal Reduction Alternative
If your home is worth significantly less than you owe on it, you may be eligible for a Principal Reduction Alternative (PRA) under a Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP). To be eligible for PRA, the home must also be occupied as your primary residence, you must be either delinquent or in danger of falling behind on your payments, and your mortgage payment must be more than 31% of your gross monthly income. If you qualify for PRA, the principal balance on your home loan is reduced to the current market value of your home. This allows you to continue making affordable mortgage payments on a long term basis. Other eligibility criteria may apply for PRA, and we encourage you to seek legal advice before submitting a PRA request to your lender.
Second Lien Modification Program
If your first mortgage was permanently modified under HAMP, and you have a second mortgage on the same property, you may be eligible for a modification or principal reduction on your second mortgage under the Second Lien Modification Program (2MP). In order to qualify for 2MP, your lender must also participate in the program, and you must be current on your HAMP modification.
Defend While You Modify
The third key is ensuring that the lender does not foreclose on your home before you loan modification is finalized. As explained in previous articles, just because you’ve applied for a loan modification does not mean that your lender will stop the foreclosure of your home. Unless you hire a qualified and experienced law firm to defend your interests in the foreclosure, all the time and energy spent attempting to modify your home loan may be wasted. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy when you make an appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm at 1-800-770-7102 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information.

O
ne of the most significant results of the new
laws concerning time sharing with minor children is the increase of 50-50 or equal time sharing. It is not uncommon for Moms and Dads to share equally in the time they spend with the children. In most instances, this schedule is looked upon favorably. It allows the child(ren) to develop a close relationship with both parents and have both parents be an active part of the child’s life. This schedule can produce conflicts however if the parents are not on “the same page” in their attempts to co-parent. The equal time sharing seems to work best when both parents reside within close proximity to one another. Since this is no longer a weekend only event, both parents will be responsible for getting the children off to school in a timely manner. If both parents reside within the same school district, this is generally not a problem. But what if the parents live a considerable distance from one another? How easy will it be to get the children to their school? More importantly, how fair will it be to the children if they are now required to travel a considerable distance early in the morning from one parent’s home to their school in another part of town?

Recently, I have been faced with several situations concerning where the children will attend school. The parents live a considerable distance from one another and in each instance a minor child is starting high school in August. Since in both instances the child goes to a private school, the neighborhood public school is not acceptable to either one or both of the parents. In neither instance does their Marital Settlement Agreement address this particular issue. Instead of considering what is best for the child, the parents are now in a power struggle, each wanting to register the child in a school close to their home, but distant from their former spouse’s address. In each instance, court intervention will probably be necessary. In neither case are the parent’s considering what is best for the child. Equal time sharing can only work if the parents co-parent for the good of the child. Remember, it is not about you; it is always about the child! If you have any questions please feel free to contact my office for a free consultation at 954 385-9160.

caring for my children and caring for my parents. If you find yourself in this situation, I can help when it comes to assisting your parents, if they have reached the point where they cannot manage their personal and financial affairs. One of the areas of my practice focuses on is avoiding guardianship. While there are different aspects to guardianship law, I would like to discuss the imposition of a legal guardianship upon an elderly parent or loved one. The question many of us will face is what happens when an aging parent can no longer manage their personal or financial affairs? What if the person can no longer remember who their doctor is, where their doctor’s office is located or what bank holds their money?

Florida law provides for a legal procedure whereby a person’s legal rights, such as the right to manage and dispose of property and make medical and health care decisions, can be delegated to a court appointed guardian. The appointment of a guardian should be, however, a measure of last resort. If a proper plan is put in place, should an individual become incapacitated, a guardianship will not be required. However, planning to avoid a guardianship must be done while a person is still capable of doing so. I met with a gentleman who brought in his mother. He had been told that he could not access his mother’s bank account to pay her bills, because he did not have legal authority to do so. Furthermore, he was not permitted to access his mother’s medical records due to patient confidentiality laws. He asked if I could help. Normally, I would prepare a durable power of attorney and a health care surrogate. These documents would have permitted this gentleman to manage his mother’s financial and personal affairs. However, his mother no longer had the requisite capacity to understand the impact of and the authority conveyed in a durable power of attorney or health care surrogate. These documents cannot be put into place if a person lacks the capacity to understand and properly execute the documents. The gentleman said that a few months prior, his mother was doing well, but had rapidly deteriorated. It was too late to do a durable power of attorney and so the result: a guardianship was required at great expense, time and court intrusion. The guardianship could have been avoided if they had only come to see me sooner. If you find yourself in the position of caring for aging parents or loved ones, don’t wait. Talk about things now, so that an already difficult situation is not further complicated by a guardianship. Heel Pain Has Become Part of the Game

ndoors and outdoors, youth athletes stay active
year-round in competitive sports, and for many of them heel pain has become “just another part of the game.” When a child complains of heel pain, it should be diagnosed promptly because it may be a warning sign of a serious foot problem. Heel pain occurs frequently in children, ages 6 to 14, as their feet grow and the heel bones develop. As children become more active in sports, they increase their risk for growth-plate injuries and subsequent heel pain. This is especially true at back-to-school time, when we see an increase in middle and high school athletes experiencing heel pain with football and soccer seasons simultaneously underway. New bone forms in an area behind the heel, known as the growth plate, and cartilage is vulnerable to severe inflammation from strain or stress. With repeated stresses and strains from over activity, the heel becomes very painful.
Jill Athenour brought the Pines Miramar Town Times with her while she was skating outdoors in the Colorado mountains.
We Want Your Photo! Take your latest copy of Pines Miramar Even though growth-plate trauma is the leading cause of heel pain in young people, the condition can be difficult to diagnose. Parents should be concerned if a child has pain in the back or bottom of the heel, limps, walks on the toes, or seems to have difficulty participating in normal recreational activities. To diagnose the condition, we examine the child’s foot and leg and often take imaging tests to rule out other serious causes of heel pain, such as bursitis, tendonitis and fractures. In most cases, mild or moderate heel pain can be treated successfully with shoe inserts to soften the impact on the heel, anti-inflammatory medications, stretching and physical therapy. In severe cases, the foot and ankle will be immobilized in a cast and, in some instances, surgery may be necessary. Heel pain in young people often returns after treatment because the growth plate is still forming until the age of 14 or 15. However, the risk for recurrence can be lowered by choosing well-constructed shoes with good support and restricting use of spiked athletic shoes, especially on hard fields. Young athletes should avoid competition that exceeds their physical abilities. The Florida Foot @ Ankle Associates, LLC is located at the Memorial Hospital West Professional Bldg., 601 N. Flamingo Rd. Suite 414, in Pembroke Pines. Dr. Michael A. Rivera has been a South Florida foot and ankle surgeon for past 18 years. he following are some ways to keep patients
with Alzheimer’s disease safe:
DRIVING
Weston Hills- Edgewater

As Alzheimer’s progresses, people may get lost easily or forget to get into the correct lane for a turn. Eventually, they are unable to watch the road and listen to the radio at the same time, or they will be unable to stop suddenly. This is the point when driving becomes dangerous. If this happens, talk to your doctor. When someone is deemed unsafe to drive, he or she must stop. However, it is important to help this person find other ways to get around. Older people can become depressed when they stop driving.
PERSONALITY AND BEHAVIOR CHANGES
Some people become confused and might see things that are not there. Others might withdraw, talk less, cry easily or have difficulty sleeping. In more advanced stages, a patient can become psychotic, argumentative and even aggressive. As a caregiver, it is important to watch for things that trigger the problem, and avoid them. It is also important to compromise and simplify things at home. Having a set routine can also help. For those who suffer with hallucinations, it is better not to confront them. When the hallucinations are scary or upsetting to them, try to distract them with something pleasant.
INSOMNIA
When this becomes a problem, limit caffeine intake, increase the amount of daily exercise, and limit naptime. Make sure there is a nightlight in the room, as darkness can lead to confusion. It is also helpful to keep clocks throughout the home and remind them of the time of day.

It is okay to wander in a safe space, such as a fenced yard. When this is not possible, place large stop signs or furniture in front of the front door. A formal or simple alarm system can also help. One example is to tie a few empty cans to a string on the doorknob. If you choose to put special locks, make sure your loved one is not left alone in case of a fire or emergency. When it is not possible to keep the environment safe, a 24-hour aide or nursing home placement may become necessary. Fortunately, there are many community resources available to patients and family members suffering with Alzheimer’s. Please contact us for more information.
This month’s trivia question: Which is a better food option for diabetic patients: regular or sweet potatoes? Answer: Sweet Potatoes. These are considered a diabetic “superfood” and do not raise your blood sugar as much.

Fit and Trim Helps Patients Look and Feel Their Best By Debby Teich
O
What can patients expect on their first visit?
besity can negatively affect your
health, your self-esteem, the way you feel and the way you look. At Fit and Trim in Pembroke Pines, patients are changing their lives by losing weight and keeping it off. The staff is enthusiastic, friendly and always ready to help you stay on the path to a happier, healthier, thinner you.
Lucy Linares, president, answered some commonly asked questions about Fit and Trim.
What services do you offer? We specialize exclusively in the HCG diet. We help our patients reach their weight loss goals as quickly as possible by monitoring their progress weekly, guiding them and offering encouragement. We provide them with the information and resources they need to be successful.
Patients are greeted by one of our friendly and professional HCG specialists. After they fill out a comprehensive medical history form, we measure their key body composition readings, weigh them and perform a blood pressure test. Once we have all of the information, we sit down with patients to determine weight loss goals and to talk about why they want to lose weight. We thoroughly explain the HCG diet protocol, because informed patients are more successful patients. We encourage them to ask questions and let them know that we are always here to guide them and support them. We also provide them with any products they need to start the protocol at no charge.
Is the diet medically supervised? Dr. Ausberto
The HCG specialists are friendly and professional.

to burn more fat. We caution against high intensity exercise.
Is this a new diet? No. The HCG Diet Protocol was written and discovered by Dr. A.T.W Simeons, who dedicated his life to the study of obesity and how to cure it. The first reported use of HCG was published in 1954 by Dr. A.T.W Simeons.
before
after
Raul lost 60 pounds on Fit and Trim’s HCG diet.
How much weight do patients lose on the HCG diet? Our patients lose 1/2 to 2 pounds per day. On average, 70% of people that have participated in the HCG diet claim they have had no difficulty keeping the weight off.
What are some of the benefits of losing weight? More than 60% of Americans are classified as overweight or obese and could benefit from trimming down. Being overweight or obese is often associated with an increased risk for the development of a multitude of diseases, including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and more. These are often preventable with healthier lifestyles and normal body weights.
Why is this diet different from other diets? This diet shows you how to appreciate healthy, natural food, and how to consume it in the correct combinations. You eat food that gives you natural energy, without chemicals or additives. You can purchase the food in any grocery store. We even provide a spray that makes the vegetables taste better.
54
How Does the HCG diet work? HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is a natural hormone produced in large quantities during pregnancy. The body produces HCG to metabolize fat as an energy source for the growth and nourishment of the baby. Although HCG is naturally produced only in pregnant women, as a diet aid it works the same for men and women. The focus of the Fit and Trim HCG is to dissolve the unhealthy, abnormal fat. Many other diet programs fail to convert abnormal fat into calories, as they can only burn the structural and normal brown fat. As a result, the body does not lose the abnormal fat, no matter how much less patients consume and workout. What should patients expect while on the diet? This is a very balanced diet that incorporates lean protein, colorful fresh vegetables, and low glycemic fruits. The Fit and Trim protocol teaches healthy eating habits. The diet that you will follow initially includes the building blocks for the new, healthy habits you will keep after finishing the program.
Does the protocol include exercise? There is no need to exercise while on the program, but we recommend a 10-15 minute walk daily
Is there a maintenance plan? Yes, it is 21 days long. During the last period of the protocol, the body’s metabolic rate has to be stabilized and a new set point weight has to be created. Do you offer any discounts? The first 30 customers that call will receive our highly successful 40-day protocol at half price. Are drops the most effective way to take HCG? Homeopathic HCG drops are just as effective as HCG injections. Homeopathy is the second most widely used system of medicine in the world. It has been the primary medical system of choice for a great number of people in other countries for many years, with the allopathic methods being their secondary choice.
How does your program differ from your competitors? The staff at Fit and Trim is enthusiastic, friendly and professional. We measure weight, body fat, water %, muscle mass, physique rating, DCI/BMR, metabolic age, bone mass and visceral fat. These key factors tell us how well the patient is following the protocol and help us optimize the diet. We also provide our patients with recipes to help them stay on track.
How often do patients visit the office? Patients have the option to visit the office every week or every 10 days. We encourage them to visit every week so we can closely monitor their progress. Fit and Trim is located at 17901 NW 5th St., Suite 101B, Silver Lakes Village in Pembroke Pines (Just off Pines Blvd. & 178th Ave. on NW corner of 5th Street). For information, call 954-200-7744. Dry, Burning Eyes? It Could Be Dry Eye Syndrome
MiraMar The Fountains of Miramar (Next to El Fogon) Dr. Michael Chesen 2909 Dykes Rd., Miramar, FL • 954-437-9733 www.mirvision.net
By Dr. Michael Chesen
D
ry eyes can be common during the cold season
due to cold and dry air conditions. Tears are a necessary part of eye health. They flush out any small particles caught in the eye and keep the eyes moist and comfortable. They also contain enzymes that eliminate bacteria that can be found in the eye. For individuals whose eyes do not produce enough tears, symptoms can result such as persistent dryness, burning, itching or the feeling of a foreign body in your eye. Ironically, sometimes dry eyes cause eyes to water excessively if the eyes over-stimulate tear production to make up for inadequate tearing.

There are several causes of dry eyes. Dry eyes are often age related, since it is usually adults that complain of dry eye syndrome, particularly women during menopause. Reduction in tear production can also result from certain medications such as antihistamines, beta blockers, blood pressure pills as well as others. Dry or dusty air, and dry heat or air circulation can also be the cause. Additionally, some diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis or others; continual sitting in front of a computer screen; or usage of contact lenses can cause dry eye syndrome. Dry eye symptoms can often be alleviated by using lubricating eye drops to put moisture back into the eye. Dr. Chesen can instruct you as to which eye drops to get and how to use them. If over the counter drops don’t help, you may need prescription drops that stimulate your eyes to produce more tears. If artificial tears aren’t helpful, another option could be lacrimal plugs which help keep the eye moist by slowing the drainage of tears. Some optometrists may suggest that you try ways to modify your environment or your diet to reduce the symptoms as well. For most individuals, dry eyes do not affect your vision permanently, but they can be a nuisance. Although, very serious dry eyes have a chance of making you more vulnerable to infection, so it is advised to speak to your eye doctor. It is not necessary to live with dry, itchy, burning eyes - contact Dr. Chesen today!
