ummer and sports seem to go hand in hand. The ballparks

and pools are filled with children practicing and playing as they enjoy the joys of childhood. Meantime, across the pond in London, young athletes from all around the globe are getting ready to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games. Every four years the top athletes in the different summer Olympic sports meet to compete. While each of these athletes has trained hard for years to prepare for this pinnacle of international competition, winning their individual discipline is not the only thing on their mind. The Olympic Games stand for uniting the youth of the world for a better, global society. While there will always be differences in opinions and priorities, the young competitors from all over the world demonstrate to us that by working together with patience and tolerance we can overcome any obstacle. We will do well to remember that lesson in our daily lives. It may help us to be more tolerant towards each other and overcome disagreements with spouses, coworkers and neighbors. When watching the competitions of the 2012 Olympic Games unfold with your loved ones, rejoice in the spirit of the game and the spirit of togetherness. Cherish these quality moments!

Community NEWS

One Thousand Residents Invited to Participate in Mural Project By Debby Teich

W

hat would happen if

you gave identical 5-inch squares to “artists” in the community who work in a variety of styles and mediums and then displayed them in a single exhibit? Pembroke Pines is about to find out. Pembroke Pines residents of all ages are invited to participate in the Imagination Squared Project. They will have an opportunity to express their creativity and contribute to the first ever Pembroke Pines community art project. It is open to anyone who has the imagination to design a square and the courage to have it hang with hundreds of others in a public place. Sponsored by the City of Pembroke Pines and Studio 18 in the Pines, Imagination Squared is a creative response art project Robyn Vegas shows some of the which showcases the importance of arts wooden squares that will be used for the Pembroke Pines mural. and artistic expression in our lives. “It is a great way for people in the community to get involved in the arts,” said Robyn Vegas, Cultural Arts Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. “Anyone can participate and create something, even if they are not a true artist.” This month, organizers will distribute 1,000 five-inch wooden squares on a first-come,

first-served basis at several locations in Pembroke Pines. A small $1 donation to the project is requested. Once the squares are decorated, they will be assembled into a mural which will hang permanently at Studio 18 in the Pines. The mural will be unveiled at a public reception on September 7, at Studio 18. Participants can take their inspiration from the world around them, Mural from the Jacksonville from within their imagination – or project completed in 2010. anywhere in between. They can use any arts and crafts supplies they like, even photographs or found objects. They are only limited by their imagination and a few simple guidelines. Anyone who needs help can attend the Imagination Squared Day presentation at the Southwest Regional Library on July 14, from 11am to 1pm. Local artists will demonstrate how to use a variety of materials and techniques to get started. The project was originally implemented in Jacksonville, Florida in 2010. As the definition of “artist” grew, over 900 people submitted entries which became a snapshot of the community’s imagination in Jacksonville. The mural was exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art in September, 2010 and later became part of the permanent collection on exhibit at the main branch of the Jacksonville Public Library. Studio 18 in the Pines is located at 1101 Poinciana Drive. For more information, visit www.ppines.com/studio18 or call 954-961-6067.

I

n March, students, residents and businesses brought over 1,000

cans to the City of Pembroke Pines 52nd Birthday Celebration and Fair in an effort to support the City’s participation in the 2012 Cans for Cash City Recycling Challenge. Last month, the United States Conference of Mayors and Novelis Inc., the global leader in rolled aluminum products and aluminum can recycling, awarded Pembroke Pines first place in the “Most Innovative Campaign” category of the Challenge. The City received a $25,000 grant as part of the award. “The plaque will be on display in City Hall and the check will be deposited into the General Fund,” said Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis. employ the most creative strategies to promote aluminum beverage can recycling. “The Challenge provides municipalities with a platform to engage their citizens in a conversation about the importance of recycling and to help build greener, more sustainable communities,” said Tom Walpole, senior vice president of Novelis and president, Novelis North America. Francie Novo, Pembroke Pines Special Events Coordinator, came up with the idea to use the collected cans to build a five-foot birthday cake. Mayor Ortis assisted residents, co-workers and students from the Pembroke Pines Charter Schools with the effort. Novo’s unique idea helped Pembroke Pines win first place. The cake was unveiled during the City’s 52nd Birthday Celebration and remained on display for Five-foot birthday several days. “We made every can count,” said Mayor Ortis. cake created out of aluminum cans. Combined, cities that participated in the 2012 Challenge collected 114,284,354 aluminum beverage cans during the challenge period. The amount of energy saved by recycling these cans could supply enough energy to power 10,884 U.S. homes for an entire day. The Cans for Cash City Recycling Challenge has collected and recycled more than 902 million aluminum cans since the challenge started in 2004. “Money for future recycling initiatives is so important for our city,” said Mayor Ortis. “Florida must reach a 75 percent reduction in our carbon footprint by the year 2025 and recycling is one way of accomplishing this. We encourage all cities to follow our lead.” For information about Cash for Cans, call 954-435-6525.

Pembroke Pines Resident Celebrates 100th Birthday By Debby Teich

G

urine Anglin of Pembroke Pines has something big to

celebrate. On June 4, she turned 100 years young. The Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Community Center hosted a birthday party in her honor. She has celebrated her birthday at the Center for the past 20 years. Gurine wanted a big “hoop la” for her 100th birthday and she got it. There were balloons, a big sign and a large birthday cake. Several local celebrities joined birthday girl Gurine at her celebration, including Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis; Angela Aracena, Vice President of Easter Seals; Martha Castilleja, Center Director of Easter Seals in Pembroke Pines; Sandra Suarez-Rinaldi, SWFP Human Services Administrator, and Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing for the City of Pembroke Pines. Everyone sang “Happy Birthday” to Gurine. “It was a great time,” said Mayor Ortis. “Gurine was overwhelmed and enjoyed her day immensely.” Gurine, a native of Jamaica, was a teacher and married to husband Hugh for 34 years. Gurine was a teacher in Jamaica and has four children, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is a very active member of the Easter Seals Adult Day Care program. She is currently taking a Spanish class and teaches a yarn class to other members of the Adult Day Care. She enjoys discussing politics and world affairs.

The Southwest Focal Point Community Center is located at 301 NW 103rd Avenue in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954-450-6888 or visit www. ppines.com, click on Departments and select Community Services.

Mayor Challenges Residents to Donate $1 for Cancer By Debby Teich

T

his year 1.5 million people will hear

the dreaded words, “You have cancer.” For 15 years, the American Cancer Society has held a Relay for Life event in Pembroke Pines for people who have been touched by cancer. The 18-hour overnight event typically begins at 6 p.m. and lasts all night, because cancer never sleeps. This year’s April event was rained out and rescheduled for May 26. Over 500 people attended the “Encore” event and the weather was ideal. Relay for Life is the nationwide signature event of the American Cancer Society. It is NOT just a race or walk. Teams of people and individuals have fun while raising funds to fight cancer and increase awareness of cancer prevention and treatment. The event gives participants a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Although the Encore Relay was pared down to six hours, it still included the traditional Survivor Walk, Care Giver Walk, Team Walks, Luminary Ceremony, entertainment, raffles, 50/50 drawings and much more. There was also a new fun event, “Miz Relay,” where men dressed up as women and the donations

they received counted as a vote. The goal for the Relay was $165,000; however, the abbreviated event left a shortfall of $43,328. Frank C. Ortis, Mayor of Pembroke Pines, encouraged residents to donate a dollar to help meet the fundraising goal. “If 43,328 people would donate just a dollar, we can meet our goal to help fight cancer,” said Mayor Ortis. “Our City continues to be one of the most successful Relay events in the state of Florida and I am proud to support the American Cancer Society. With everyone’s help, a cure will be found.” To help Mayor Ortis reach the 15th Annual Relay for Life fundraising goal, make a donation at: http://main.acsevents.org/ site/R?pg=team&fr_id=37601&team_ id=1142180. Lakeside Elementary Wins First Place at Math Competition By Debby Teich

T

he 5th grade math team at Lakeside

Elementary has proven that they know how to crunch numbers. They recently entered the Broward County Council Teachers of Mathematics annual competition and were named 1st place Overall Champions for the South Area of Broward County. Team captain Luis Garcia, who got a perfect score, also won the 1st place individual award. Lakeside students are required to take a test to earn a spot on the team. “The real challenge for the students is to answer the questions in the time allotted,” said team advisor Sharon Budd. “The students on the team must be fast, accurate, and able to perform under pressure.” This year, more than 50 kids applied and five were selected. They were Luis Garcia, Jennifer Barroso, Dylan Kahn and Nicholas Tsung. Stephen Schissler was chosen as the alternate. To prepare for the tournament, the math team practices against the other high level math students at the school. This is the third year that the school has place in the top three at the competition. The students were recognized at an awards ceremony. “It is so nice to see the kids get excited about winning an

academic challenge,” said Budd. Budd says that the school desperately needs a new set of competition level calculators. “We need to replace our 14 year old calculators, which are outdated and dying daily,” said Budd. “There is no money in the school budget to purchase new calculators and our high level math students will be at a disadvantage in future competitions without the latest technology.” While Budd often spends her own money on supplies, she decided to turn to the Miramar Pembroke Pines Chamber of Commerce for help. She applied for a Classroom Mini-Grant and titled her application “Competition Contestants Crave Current Calculators.” She was awarded $250, which she says will allow her to purchase at least 12 competition level TI-15 Explorer calculators. “I am grateful to the Chamber for helping us keep up with the latest technology,” said Budd. “All of the fifth grade students will use the new calculators during math competition practice sessions. The math team will also use them at the competitions. The new set of calculators will benefit hundreds of students for years to come.”

PPCES-FSU Students Take a Trip to the Hospital By Debby Teich

S

tudents in Marjorie Lasnetski’s second-grade class at Pembroke

Pines Charter Elementary FSU campus will have a good idea of what to expect if they are ever in need of medical attention at a hospital. They recently took a field trip to Memorial Hospital Miramar as part of Kids and the Power of Work (KAPOW), a program designed to connect a student’s classroom learning to their future in the work place. KAPOW’s lessons help students discover different jobs, what it takes to do them, and how to be successful in work and life. The KAPOW program has been educating the children of Pembroke Pines with real life, hands-on experiences since 2001. The program introduces students to career awareness through seven one-hour professionally developed lessons taught by business volunteers in the classroom and culminates with a visit to the workplace. Volunteers reinforce the relevance of subjects like reading and math by explaining how they play a role in their jobs every day. “When students hear about the importance of school from someone special, it takes on a whole new meaning,” said John Casbarro, President of Learning for Success, Inc. who coordinates the KAPOW program in South Florida. “It gives them a better understanding of why they need to learn and motivates them to want to work harder. Volunteers have the ability to change a young person’s life forever in only seven hours.” Throughout the school year, volunteer and retired chemistry teacher Marie Shotland (aka Grand Ma Marie) met with the 2nd grade class to teach them about the importance of community involvement, leadership, communication and teamwork. She donated lesson-related books to the classroom library and often brought surprise treats for

26

the children. “She was always prepared and introduced the children to work-related concepts and experiences through hands-on, engaging, and age appropriate activities,” said Lasnetski. “The kids always looked forward to seeing her and anticipated her next lesson. The impression she made will be long lasting.” Shotland says that she got just as much out of it as the children did. “I had so much fun with the children,” said Shotland. “I loved listening to their questions and answering them. I also loved seeing their eyes light up.” At the end of the year, she asked the students to write a letter telling her what they wanted to be when they grow up. “They listed all of the qualities that they learned during the year,” said Shotland. “It was nice to see how much they enjoyed the class.” For the last KAPOW lesson, students from Lasnetski’s class, along with Shotland, took a field trip to Memorial Hospital Miramar. The children toured the lab, where they looked at red and white blood cells under a microscope. In the pediatric emergency room, they discussed what they can expect if they ever have to visit, from arrival to release. In the x-ray room, a technician explained how an x-ray machine works. They also participated in a hands-on “Teddy Bear Clinic,” where they learned how to care for their sick bears. “The children saw how the people who work at the hospital use math, reading and writing every day,” said Lasnetski. “It helped them understand that the things they learn in school are important.” KAPOW is always looking for business or individual volunteers, as well as schools interested in participating in the program. For information, visit www.kapowlfs.org; send an email to john.casbarro@gmail.com or call 954-680-3916.

Jacqueline Binns is thrilled with her new commute. “The 595 Express Bus is beyond what I expected,” said Binns, who lives in Weston and works in downtown Fort Lauderdale. “Driving more than 50 miles a day adds up. With the 595 Express Bus I not only save money on gas, parking, and car expenses, but I can also get a jumpstart on my work day using the free Wi-Fi.” Funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) with services provided by Broward County Transit (BCT), the 595 Express Bus runs every 30 minutes on weekday mornings and afternoons. The fleet is comprised of new 42-foot hybrid buses equipped with free WiFi and 12-volt power outlets for charging electronic communication equipment. “Think of the 595 Express Bus as the ultimate hands-free device,” said Jeremy Mullings, FDOT Project Manager. “Instead of fighting traffic, commuters can now spend their time how they’d like: surfing the net, catching up on emails or simply relaxing. And, with the cost of commuting as high as it is, riding the 595 Express Bus has never made more sense for residents commuting from Western Broward.” 595 Express Bus fares are $2.35 for a one-way adult fare to downtown Miami and downtown Fort Lauderdale. BCT is also offering a Premium 31-Day Bus Pass for $85 that includes unlimited rides on both express and regular bus service and a Premium 10-Ride Bus Pass at a cost of $23.50. For details on the service, including route maps and schedules, visit www.595ExpressBus.com or call BCT Customer Service at 954-357-8400 (TTY: 954-357-8302).

Economics, however, is always her favorite. “Every day, the kids have to decide how to spend their money,” said Sakowitz. “I want to make sure they have the tools they need to help them make good choices.” Sakowitz was recently awarded a grant from the Miramar Pembroke Pines Regional Chamber Education Fund to use on materials that will help her teach the subject. Sakowitz combines text book learning with literature and hands-on activities to convey economic concepts that are typically taught at higher levels of social studies. ennifer Lopez and Beyonce started a craze for

an enhanced buttock as more flat or bulky rear ends everywhere are being surgically enhanced into more shapely curves and feminine fullness. Besides this major attention focused on only a few Hollywood leading ladies, more women everywhere are considering, or getting buttock enhancements – lifted, sculpted, or augmented. For one, more women are wearing tighter fitting clothing, such as low-cut sweats, workout pants and leotards, in public more often. Plus, thong bathing suits leave absolutely nothing to the imagination. The popularity of the butt lift is not just a U.S. fashion fad. Experts say there are strong reasons why people everywhere are wild about beautiful rears on females and the very feminine inward sweep of the lower back, hips and waist. Why is there such a craze about buttock augmentation? The latest trend in plastic surgery is no longer lipo-zap, Botox, or laser plastic surgery. Now, more than ever before, one of the most popular cosmetic plastic surgery procedures is buttock augmentation or the Brazilian butt lift. The reason is that women are unhappy with their buttocks. Their butt is too flat, too wide, or sagging. Designer jeans don’t fit or look good on them. They were either born like this, or lost the form and shape of their buttocks after losing or gaining weight. Pregnancy, or just aging alone, can also affect the size, projection, and profile of the buttocks. Inability to achieve perky buttocks and sexy curves through exercise and muscle toning has frustrated health-conscious women. There is an assortment of cosmetic surgery procedures available for those who desire youthful, fuller, and perky buttocks, with a more sensual body profile. These techniques for buttock augmentation or enhancement vary depending on what is actually missing and what is the overall body frame and form. For example, there are many who are either genetically or by weight gain have developed “fat and wide” buttocks. Liposculpture can shape their buttocks and the surrounding tissues to make the buttocks rounder and more proportional to the rest of the figure. On the other hand, there are those who have “flat and wide” buttocks. In addition to utilizing liposculpture to shape their waist, hips and buttocks, fat injection or grafting is used to augment the buttocks and to provide fullness and projection. Because it also helps to lift sagging butts, this procedure is also referred to as a Brazilian Buttock Lift. On the contrary, there are some with sagging buttocks who are not a candidate for Brazilian Buttock Augmentation. These are people whose buttocks sag as a result of massive weight loss after gastric bypass surgery. These people would rather benefit from a body lift procedure which removes excess skin and helps to lift their thighs and buttocks. During your consultation, Dr. Messa will review your treatment options for buttock contouring, augmentation and enlargement. He will discuss if you are a good candidate, surgical options and techniques, potential risks and complications of surgery, pre and post-operative instructions, and recovery course, as well as what to expect after surgery. To learn more about plastic surgery, schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Charles A. Messa, III. We are conveniently located at 2823 Executive Park Drive, in Weston. message from the mayor

Pembroke Pines Update by Pembroke PInes Mayor Frank C. Ortis

R

ecently there has been much discussion in the

community and in the media regarding the accessibility of synthetic marijuana and other drugs. I am on the United Way Substance Abuse Committee and found that synthetic marijuana, while on the federal registry which recognizes synthetic marijuana as a controlled substance, was not on the Florida registry which did not recognize synthetic marijuana as a controlled substance. Synthetic marijuana — sold as incense under brands such as Mr. Nice Guy and Spice - was not listed as a controlled substance in Florida. With the help of Assistant City Attorney Julie Klahr, the City of Pembroke Pines drafted language for the State Legislature’s approval, and Representative Matt Hudson, during the last session, passed legislation to put synthetic marijuana on the Florida Registry. In addition to illicit substances, we also have a serious problem with underage drinking. I am going to bring an issue before the Pembroke Pines Commissioners for their approval to make sure that all businesses in our jurisdiction that serve alcohol after midnight, educate their employees about the dangers of underage drinking. We will honor those businesses that follow our Responsible Vendor Ordinance. Each business must receive a permit from the City to ensure compliance. The ordinance will also relate to the issue of the sale of synthetic marijuana and related drugs that are affecting our youth. The following are some details that parents can use when discuss controlled substances and alcohol with their children. ▸▸ Establishing continuous and open dialogue/conversations with your children from the early childhood years increases the likelihood that they will seek you out when a problem related to alcohol or other drug use arises. It also decreases, by over 30%, the likelihood that they will engage in unhealthy lifestyle behaviors such as drinking and drugging. MESSAGE: Make the commitment to sitting around the dinner table at least four times per week to enhance family conversation and be able to note early on when issues arise with your children and teens. Conversations at the dinner table are an effective prevention tool. ▸▸ The adolescent’s developing brain continues to develop until about 23 – 25 years old. Introducing alcohol or other drugs to this still developing brain adversely impacts development and dramatically increases the likelihood of substance abuse and addiction in the child’s adult life. MESSAGE: Do your best as a parent to prolong the age of onset. ▸▸ Too many parents allow or are permissive or look the other way when it comes to children and teens drinking alcohol or consuming other drugs in their homes. MESSAGE: Most children and teens consume alcohol and other drugs in a home. Is your home the “yes” home? ▸▸ The laws for social hosting have increased. MESSAGE: The legal repercussions of children and teens drinking and drugging can be numerous. ▸▸ Parents who come home and relax with a drink or more may be unknowingly sending their children and teens a mixed message. MESSAGE: It is important to model the behavior you want your children and teens to replicate. Kids tell us time & time again that you are the #1 influence in their life. ▸▸ Texting and social media are a part of children and teen’s lives and will remain that way for their lifetime. MESSAGE: Learn to text, get on FB and other social media and stay connected. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me at fortis@ppines.com or 954-435-6505.

electing a competent divorce attorney to

handle your family law case is a very important decision. Unless you and your spouse arrange an amicable divorce, you will want an advocate who can convince the court to give you what you need and deserve. The choice of attorney becomes especially important if there is a dispute over the children. The following are a few important criteria to help in finding the right divorce attorney. Probably the best way to find an attorney is to ask friends, coworkers, or relatives who have gone through a divorce if they would recommend their divorce attorney. Since divorce is fairly common, chances are you know several people who have been divorced. Ask these people if they would use their attorney again. If they would, then add that attorney’s name to the list. If you don’t know anyone who has been divorced or don’t want to let anyone know that you are considering a divorce, then you can call a lawyer referral service in your city or county or lastly, you may search online for divorce attorneys who appear on the results pages.

No Phone Calls Please! E-mail resume to: publisher@ourcityweston.com

Any lawyer you consider should have substantial experience in handling divorce cases. Additionally, that lawyer should practice primarily in the field of divorce law. Often people will hire a lawyer who practices primarily in some other area, thinking that any lawyer will do. However, divorce law is a specialized field that requires particular skills and experience in order to have a likelihood of reaching a successful conclusion. It is vitally important that you have a candid discussion with any prospective divorce lawyer about fees and what you can expect. Typically, an experienced divorce attorney will require the payment of a substantial retainer up front, against which that lawyer’s hourly rate and expenses will be charged. You should find out what the lawyer’s hourly rate is, what the upfront retainer will be, whether any portion of the retainer is refundable if it is not exhausted, and how often you can expect to receive invoices that detail the hourly charges and expenses. When it comes down to choosing an attorney out of several you have interviewed, be more intuitive than scientific Even if the attorneys you interviewed are all acceptable on paper, there is no guarantee each one will be a good fit. Go with your gut and choose the attorney you click with. Remember that divorce is a highly personal and emotionally charged process, so choose an attorney with whom you will feel comfortable sharing some of the more intimate details of your life. If you have received strong recommendations, done your research and interviewed several candidates, you should find a lawyer who will advocate for you, patiently answer your questions and guide you through a difficult process. For a free initial consultation to learn more about the divorce process, please contact the law office of Maritza Gonzalez, P.A. located in Weston at (954) 389-2221 or visit us at www.mgfamilylaw.com.

Tips for Beating the Bank in Foreclosure Proceedings By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

F

rom December 2007 to present, South Florida has experienced

a 400 percent increase in foreclosure filings, and more than one fourth of all mortgages in the United States right now are at least 60 days past due. In view of these staggering statistics, most homeowners simply give up the fight for their home before it even begins. However, a foreclosure lawsuit is just like any other lawsuit – the lender must prove its entire case before it can obtain a judgment. Just because you’ve been served with foreclosure papers does not mean you have to leave your home! The legal foreclosure process can take two years or more if the borrower is able to identify and present valid defenses to the foreclosure. Here are some suggestions on how to use foreclosure proceedings to your advantage, and possibly “beat the bank.”

Conduct a Forensic Audit of Your Loan First of all, perform a detailed audit of your loan transaction through a qualified mortgage auditing firm. A forensic audit often reveals serious violations of Federal and State laws committed by the same lenders that initiate foreclosure proceedings. An audit may also reveal fatal flaws in the transfer of your mortgage. If you don’t know a reputable mortgage audit firm in your area, please contact the Arcia Law Firm at 1-800-770-7102 or www.arcialawfirm.com, and we will gladly point you in the right direction. File a Counterclaim Against Your Lender Using the results of your forensic audit, and assuming you have identified violations of law in connection with your loan, you should file a counterclaim against your lender for those same violations. In other words, sue your lender within the same proceedings as a means to gain negotiating leverage and improve your mortgage terms. In some cases, borrowers have been able to obtain a cancellation of the mortgage altogether by taking the offensive in a foreclosure proceeding.

FREE DVD

Demand the Original Note Most foreclosure proceedings are not initiated by the original lender, but rather by a party who claims to “own and hold” the Note securing payment of the loan. Surprisingly, many of these third parties don’t actually have possession of the original note, or the right to enforce the obligation. The Note is a negotiable instrument, like a bank check. Do you know any bank that will cash a “copy” of any check? Likewise, no Court will decide a foreclosure proceeding based upon a “copy” of your Note. If you demand the original Note, and the lender is unable to produce it, a foreclosure judgment cannot legally be obtained. Challenge Your Lender’s Right to Bring the Foreclosure Proceeding In most cases, your original lender did not formally assign or endorse the Note to the new entity. Florida law only permits an action to be presented by the “real party in interest.” If you never signed an agreement with the party that filed the foreclosure, you can challenge their right to file the foreclosure proceedings altogether. Judges will not hesitate to dismiss a foreclosure proceeding initiated by a company that has no legal right to bring the action. The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to successfully represent dozens of homeowners in our community with mortgage fraud, foreclosure defense and bankruptcy cases. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 1-800-770-7102 for a free consultation, or at www.arcialawfirm.com. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team.

uch! Nothing ruins a summer vacation faster

than a painful or injured foot. From the airport to your hotel room, there are steps you can take to prevent foot and ankle pain and injury. The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons offers 10 tips for keeping your feet safe this summer: ▸▸ Wear comfortable shoes to the airport. You never know how long you will wait in line, how far you will walk to the terminal, or if you will have to make a mad dash to make a connecting flight. Loose-fitting flip-flops and sandals increase your risk of tripping, falling and spraining your ankle. Sprains should be evaluated by a foot and ankle surgeon within 24-hours to ensure proper healing. Many people suffer repeated sprains because they didn’t see a doctor for previous injuries. Wear socks with those comfortable shoes. Not only do socks protect your feet’s skin from shoe friction that can cause blisters and calluses, but they can also keep you healthy. You’re required to remove your shoes before you enter the walk-through metal detectors at airports. Walking barefoot through an airport exposes your feet to bacteria and viruses that could cause plantar warts and athlete’s foot. Avoid bringing new shoes on vacation. They can be stiff and unforgiving. If you plan to dance the night away or do a lot of walking, wear shoes that will make your feet as happy as you are. Check your children’s shoes for fit and comfort, too. Bring flip-flops or sandals. Avoid walking barefoot in locker rooms and around pools, where you may pick up athlete’s foot, a plantar wart infection or toenail fungus. Pack an antifungal cream or powder. If you’re staying in a hotel or using public pools, using an antifungal product can help prevent athlete’s foot. Place a towel on the floor before entering the shower or bathtub. This can prevent slipping when you exit. The towel will also help dry toes and protect them from infections. If you are traveling more than two hours, be sure to stretch your legs and pump your feet. This will help circulate the blood to prevent deep vein thrombosis, or dangerous blood clots in the legs. Consider wearing compression socks on the plane to help prevent blood clots and deep vein thrombosis by pushing the blood through the legs and back to the lungs and heart. Pack a small first aid kit. Chances are you’ll develop a blister from that long walk through the shopping village or scrape your foot on a piece of coral at the beach. Clean your feet with saline (eye solution), apply a small amount of antibiotic cream and cover with a Band-Aid or gauze. But if you suffer a puncture wound, see a foot and ankle surgeon within 24-hours for professional cleaning of the wound to prevent infections and other complications.

hen couples who have minor children are

divorced, summer vacation can present new problems. Because school is not in session, the normal time sharing arrangement that has been working all year (hopefully), may no longer be viable. For instance, a couple who during the school year picks up and drops of the children at school can no longer follow that schedule. Will the schedule remain the same or do the parties follow a different plan for the summer? Is their a provision for extended time so each of the parents can take the children on a vacation for a week or more? Are the parents both living locally or is there a provision which requires the children to spend part or all of the summer with the parent who is living in another part of the country? Can the children leave the area and visit family such as aunts, uncles or grandparents? Can the parents agree on a camp program and who will pay for it? The above are just some of the issues which seem to surface each summer. The best way to avoid these issues is to make sure they are addressed in any marital settlement agreement or Parenting Plan that is being entered into. It is much easier to agree on these issues during the negotiations rather than have to petition the court after the divorce is final and request a change or a modification. Think ahead and more importantly think of what’s best for the children. I have known parents to try and prevent a child from taking a trip, whether it is Disney World or Europe, for what I would consider to be selfish reasons. If it’s a trip which will benefit the children, shouldn’t that be the primary concern of any decision. It is also important to be flexible. Don’t try and punish your former spouse by, in essence, punishing the children. If you want some flexibility in your schedule, be receptive to the other parent’s request. Make sure to communicate your plans to the other parent. Include dates and methods of travel, destinations and places where you will be staying. When entering into a settlement, include a date when each parent will be required to advise the other parent about their intended travel. Don’t wait for the last minute or there may be a scheduling conflict. If the agreement requires written permission from the other parent to travel out of the country (a somewhat common provision), don’t wait until the trip is imminent to request this permission. If court intervention is necessary, it could take several weeks or months to schedule a hearing. Remember, summer is a popular time for court personnel and attorneys to plan vacations as well. If your judge is away or if opposing counsel is out of town it will be difficult to schedule a hearing. Unfortunately, an emergency to you may not be an emergency to the court. The most important thing to consider is that your kids have worked hard all year and look forward to a summer vacation. Don’t cause them unnecessary stress. Let them enjoy themselves. They won’t get to enjoy a summer vacation for long. If you have any questions, contact my office for a free consultation at 954-385-9160.

WHEN TO USE AN URGENT CARE CENTER? Many people are still unfamiliar with the unique service that Urgent Care Centers provide in their communities. Urgent Care Centers address the growing demand for quick access to healthcare, after-hours and weekend availability, as well as affordable prices. For sure it’s considerably less expensive to go to an Urgent Care Center than a hospital emergency room. And most times the wait times are much shorter. In fact, Urgent Care Centers are contributing to communities’ health care systems by providing immediate care for non-life threatening illnesses and freeing up emergency rooms in local hospitals. Urgent Care Centers also provide a broader scope of services than your typical primary care practice or retail pharmacy clinic. Those services include X-Ray, Laboratory, and Board certified physicians, which are not always available at some retail clinics.

For many patients, lower costs and more convenience are critical factors on deciding where to go. So how much does it cost to go to an Urgent Care Center? At Doctors Express in Pembroke Pines visits are covered by most major insurance plans, and patients typically pay a copay of $10, $30 or $50, depending on your insurance plan. For those people without insurance, a visit with a doctor costs $99, with additional discounted fees for XRays and lab work. The good news is that several major insurance companies have already negotiated a discounted “Global Fee” for their members, which is a single fee that includes all services available at a center for your initial visit. But Urgent care has its limits as well. A person suffering from any kind of life threatening illness or serious trauma, such as a heart attack, stroke, or serious accident, need to go to a hospital emergency room.

So what do we use Urgent Care for? For acute illnesses or minor accidents, such as: allergies, colds flu, fever, coughs, insect bites, nausea, minor burns, pink eye, rash, sore throat, minor fractures and cuts & lacerations. Be sure to pick a reputable Urgent Care Center with a modern and clean facility. That will make your visit more pleasant. Doctors Express in Pembroke Pines has a brand-new Urgent Care Center on the corner of Flamingo Rd and Sheridan St, and is part of a national company with very high standards and quality controls, as well as a very selective hiring process. Dr. Avraham Uncyk is Medical Director of Doctors Express Pembroke Pines and is Board Certified in Family Practice as well as Pediatrics. He completed his Family Practice Residency at the University of Southern California, and his Pediatric residency at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital in Long Island, New York.

Dr. Messa makes every patient feel special and unique.

Patients can feel confident that they are in good hands. As Medical Director of the Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center, Dr. Messa has achieved Black Diamond status with Allergan Medical, placing him in the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Because of his recognized excellence in aesthetic breast surgery, he serves as a consultant for Allergan Medical Breast Aesthetics and has participated in Allergan Medical’s Executive Council and the National Council for leaders in Breast Aesthetics. He has been distinguished multiple times as one of “America’s Top Surgeons” by the Consumer’s Research Council of America. Dr. Messa provided answers to some commonly asked questions about his practice at the Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center. What can patients expect when they come to see you? My patients chose my practice, because they want exceptional results. I have extensive, specialized training and years of experience in the field of cosmetic plastic surgery. I am committed to every patient’s utmost satisfaction and I provide the highest quality of patient care to achieve each person’s individual appearance goals. I treat each patient as if he or she were going to be my first, only and last patient. My staff and I are dedicated to ensuring that each patient is treated with compassionate, attentive care that ensures their safety, well-being, and ultimate satisfaction with their results. We make sure that each patient feels special and unique.

Describe your facility. The 7,200 square foot facility was carefully designed under my direction to promote a clear reflection of aesthetic beauty, with the look and feel of peaceful ambiance in its architectural and interior design. We offer a comfortable and relaxed setting with advanced technology in cosmetic plastic surgery. While beauty and confidence is our ultimate goal, the patient’s safety is of the utmost importance to me and my staff. That’s why I perform all surgical procedures in an accredited hospital facility or in our state-of-the-art, AAAASF certified surgical facility.

Do you offer any advanced techniques or equipment that others may not? I practice the latest techniques in surgical procedures. I caution patients on trying “new techniques” until they have been approved by the FDA and have documented benefits in controlled medical research trials. Some so-called ‘new techniques’ are not more advanced and therefore, not beneficial. They are only gimmicks that practitioners use to sell to patients. It is very important for my practice to

promote treatments that I know will benefit the patient that are safe and effective. What is your background? I have been in practice for almost 16 years. I was trained at two outstanding universities--the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Massachusetts. The physicians I trained under were excellent teachers and highly skilled surgeons. I had very comprehensive training in all aspects of plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as general surgery, with extensive experience in cosmetic plastic surgery. I am certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, American Board of Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
