It’s Back-to-School Time, Again!
T
here’s an old adage, “Time flies when you’re having fun.”
That’s certainly the case this summer. As hard as it is to believe, it’s time to start planning for back-to-school. That means stocking up on school supplies, scheduling school physicals, and, for kids, enjoying the last few days of staying up late and sleeping in. Soon we will be busy with our school-time routines, juggling carpool, sports practice, and after-school activities. With that also comes the daily rush to get everything, including homework and dinner, done in time. So until that first day of school arrives, let’s take an extra moment to enjoy the last few weeks of summer with our loved ones. Plan a family outing to the beach, or even the backyard pool, or invite some friends over for a backyard barbecue. Before you know it, we’ll be back-toschool and back to our busy lives. Relish these final days of summer! Sincerely,

Girl Scouts Collect Used School Supplies By Debby Teich
At the end of the school year, most students throw out their old supplies to make room for new things. When the members of Girl Scout Troop 11031 realized that much of it was still usable, they decided to take action. They started D.E.C.O. (Desk/Educational Cleanout Opportunity) and began collecting gently used school supplies to distribute to
Troop 11031 donated school supplies to the Haitian community. Ella McLaughlin, Kiara Guillen, Valeria Amortegui, Isabella Barr, Alexa Robles, Lara Ramirez, Natalia Schurr, Lauren DeVarona, Kiara Cardeno and Victoria Egues Not pictured: Kristina Martinez, Kyla Tavormina, Sophia Valdivieso
those who are less fortunate. This was the second year that they set up collection boxes at Saint Mark Catholic School, where all of the girls will be entering third grade in the fall. The students donated composition books, binders, crayons, markers and much more. As the teachers cleaned out their rooms, they donated borders from their bulletin boards and other items they would not be using for the following year. At the end of the collection, the girls met for the annual “Deco Drive Sorting Party.” They tested the magic markers to make sure they still worked, arranged crayons in boxes, and tore out used pages from composition books. The girls celebrated their efforts with a pool party. The girls delivered all of the items to the Haitian Community Center, where they will be distributed locally or sent to Haiti. The troop is planning to visit the Community Center to help with the effort before school starts. “The girls are learning that they have the ability to give back and help those in need,” said troop leader Linda DeVarona. “It is important to learn this lesson at a young age.”

PAL Latin Night Offers Dancing, Good Food and Fun By Debby Teich
T
he Pembroke Pines Police Athletic League
(PAL) is hosting its first “Latin Night” and it promises to be an evening filled with dancing, traditional Latin food and lots of fun. And it is all for a good cause. Proceeds will benefit the Pembroke Pines PAL, which is funded through donations, grants and fundraisers. More than 150 people are expected to attend the event, which will be held on August 10, from 6:30 to 9pm, at the Southwest Focal Point Senior Center. “It is a great opportunity to sample some Latin culture and cuisine,” said Joe Williams, PAL Executive Director There will be a variety of traditional Latin dishes representing the countries of Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Colombia and Ecuador. Some of the items include roasted pork, chicken, plantains, rice and beans, picadillo, tacos and more. For an additional fee, guests can purchase margaritas, beer and espresso. The entertainment includes mariachi music, dance demonstrations and a salsa contest, with a cash prize of $100 for the winning couple. Pembroke Pines PAL is recreational and educational oriented juvenile crime prevention program that relies on athletics and educational activities to create better relations between police officers and the youth in the community.
There are currently 190 kids enrolled who participate in leadership training, boxing, tae kwon do, basketball and computer learning, as well as summer and spring camps. “We need to keep our doors open so the youth in the community have a place to go,” said Williams. “Without PAL, many of these kids would be on the street.” PAL has several other fundraisers planned for 2012, including Italian Night (Oct. 19) and a Ghouls and Goblins 5K at Pembroke Gardens (Oct. 28). In early 2012, there will also be an International Foods Night, Valentine’s Day Breakfast and another 5K. Tickets for the Latin Night are $8 for adults and $6 for Seniors/children under 12 years. The Southwest Focal Point Senior Center is located at 301 NW103 Ave., in Pembroke Pines. For tickets, call the PAL office at 954-986-5044 after 4pm or throughout the day at 954-437-8864. The Pembroke Pines PAL is located at 7900 Johnson St. in Pembroke Pines. For information, visit www.ppines.com/police/pal or call 954-986-5044.

“He has shared a lot of wonderful experiences with the people he has met.” At camp, Tyler participates in archery, swimming, boating, hiking, arts and crafts, woodworking and more. He attends dinner dances and other night time activities. Throughout the year, Tyler uses Facebook to keep in touch with his camp friends. Although this was his last summer as a camper, he plans to return to Boggy Creek next year as a Leader in Training. “Many of the kids and counselors have been role models for me in the past eight years,” said Tyler. “Now it is my turn to be a role model for some of the campers and help ease their minds.” Tyler is able to attend Camp Boggy Creek at no cost due to the generosity of American Heart Heroes, a unique program of the American Heart Association in Florida that provides opportunities for children born with congenital heart defects and their families to come together to help build support, confidence and spirit. The program offers families free local and regional activities, such as Camp Boggy Creek, that provide exciting fun times in a safe and healthy environment.
In most ways, Tyler Land of Pembroke Pines is just like any other 16-year-old boy his age. The scar across his chest, however, is a reminder of one important difference. Tyler was born with a congenital heart defect and had his first surgery when he was only 2 months old. He has had two open heart surgeries, five pacemaker replacements, two valve replacements and much more. With all that he has been through, he recently had a chance to concentrate on just being a kid. He spent a week at Camp Boggy Creek, along with approximately 100 local children who were also born with heart defects. This was Tyler’s eighth summer at Boggy Creek, located outside of Orlando. The year-round camp is dedicated to enriching the lives of seriously ill children and their families by creating a life-enhancing camp experience that is exciting, empowering, memorable, safe, and medically sound. It is an opportunity for the children to forget their health issues for a week and spend time with other kids in a similar situation. “Tyler really looks forward to going every summer,” said his mother Tracey Land. Local Family Receives Appliance Donation By Debby Teich

Pamella Smith of Pembroke Pines is used to helping others. Last month, the struggling parent of three was on the receiving end. Cross Country Home Services, Inc. and United Way of Broward County recently joined together in a local initiative to donate new appliances to veterans and military families in need throughout Broward County. Pamella was the first recipient. “Many of the Veterans who return from deployment are facing higher debt, unemployment, divorce rates, and suicide rates than civilians,” said Kathleen Cannon, CEO of United Way. “They have sacrificed so much to protect our freedom and they need our help.” The United Way of Broward County established a Military Families Advisory Committee in order to bring the community together in Staff Sergeant Pamella Smith, along with her twins Joshua and Christian, show off their new appliances.

Over the next year, CCHS plans to donate $30,000 in new appliances. Pamella has been a member of the United States Army since 1991. She injured her back in the line of duty and is now getting help from the Wounded Warrior Project. She Pamella Smith was the recipient of new appliances. Pamella was excited when she thought she was receiving a refrigerator. When she learned that she would also get a range, stove, washer and dryer, she was elated. “None of my appliances were working,” said Pamella. “It is still so hard to believe that I have new ones. Pembroke Pines Baseball Player Has a Golden Arm By Debby Teich
T
welve-year-old Ryan Langford
of Pembroke Pines has been playing baseball since he could walk. He hopes to play baseball in high school and college and eventually become a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. After his performance this summer at the Cooperstown Dreams Park, he is well on his way to achieving his dream. Ryan is the starting pitcher for the Weston Rattlers 12U travel baseball team. He also plays center and right field. This summer, his team had the opportunity to play in the national invitational youth baseball tournament at the Cooperstown Dreams Park in New York. During the opening ceremonies, he represented his team in the Golden Arm skills competition, which measures throwing accuracy and distance. Ryan threw to a target located behind home plate from center field, approximately 125 feet. He competed against 103 other players from around the nation and won. After running a victory lap around the field, he was awarded a trophy that is nearly three feet tall. “It felt so awesome to win,” said Ryan. The Rattlers played against six other teams before they were knocked out of the competition. Ryan had a two-run home run in one of the games. All of the players received a Cooperstown Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Ring and were inducted into the
Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame. “I just love watching Ryan play,” said his mother, Carisse Langford. “He makes it all look so easy, but he works really hard at it. He dedicates most of his spare time to practicing baseball.” Ryan collects signed baseballs and trading cards and his mother says that his room resembles a museum. He has a Babe Ruth signed baseball and a Derek Jeter signed bat. He also has a signed ball from his favorite player, Dustin Pedroia. “Ryan is often compared to Dustin Pedroia,” said Carisse. “He is one of the smallest kids on the team, but very tough.” Ryan also excels off the field. In the fall, he will enter 8th grade at Silver Trail Middle School, where he is an honors student. He will serve as president of the National Junior Honor Society.
Ryan Langford proudly displays the trophy he was awarded for winning the Golden Arm completion at the Cooperstown Dream Park.

Mayor’s Kids’ Day Is a Success By Debby Teich
M
others and fathers have their own special day. In Pembroke
Pines, so do the children. On June 22, more than 1,000 children joined in the fun at the 3rd Annual Mayor’s Kids’ Day. They had an opportunity to eat lunch with Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis and attend a variety of free events throughout the city. “Our Mayor wanted to make June 22nd the best day of the summer for our young residents,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. “The event was even bigger than last year and the kids had a great day jammed with free treats and fun!” Green Bay, Wisconsin Mayor Jim Schmit came up with the idea for Mayor’s Kids’ Day and it was adopted as policy by The United Conference of Mayors in 2009. When Mayor Ortis heard about it at a U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting, he decided to implement the special day in Pembroke Pines. “Children work hard all school year and deserve plenty of summer activities,” said Mayor Ortis. The Third Annual Mayor’s Kids’ Day was sponsored by Baptist Health Plaza. During the event, the kids visited over 80 locations to get free items. Some of them included: free samples at Starbucks, free swimming at the YMCA, free toothbrush and toothpaste at Salgra Dental Group, free bowling at AMF, free golf clinics at Pembroke Lakes Golf, free samples at Menchie’s west and east locations, free popcorn at Wal-mart (West), free tokens at Chuck E. Cheese, free samples and prizes at Whole Foods, free skate rentals at Pines Ice Arena, free pancakes at IHOP and much more. For many of the kids, the highlight of the day was eating lunch with Mayor Ortis at the Pembroke Pines Charter High School. They enjoyed hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hotdogs, watermelon, chips, cookies, cake and drinks, as well as two bounce houses, a DJ, and mascots from Publix, BrightStar, Chick-Fil-A and Monkey Joes. There was also a BrightStar money machine, which was filled with valuable prizes. “Mayor’s Kids’ Day is a win-win for everyone,” said Novo. “The kids have fun all day and get to meet the Mayor. The parents don’t have to pay anything. The businesses increase foot traffic and get some great exposure.”

Pembroke Pines Teen Donates Hair for Locks of Love By Debby Teich
T
hirteen-year-old Gabriella Matarazzo of Pembroke Pines has
always had a passion for helping others. When her middle school announced an opportunity to donate hair for Locks of Love, most of the girls her age were reluctant to participate. Gabriella immediately knew it was something she wanted to do – for the second time. Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children, under age 21, who are suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. It uses donated hair to create high quality hair prosthetics, which help restore the children’s self-esteem and confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers. Gabriella’s first encounter with Locks of Love was as a 4th grader at the City of Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School – FSU campus, where she met another student who started wearing a bandana to school. “I was so sad when I learned that she was battling cancer and had lost her hair during treatments,” said Gabriella. “I wanted to help her get a wig.” Gabriella organized a Locks of Love Cut-a-thon at the school. The event was ultimately initiated at several other Charter School campuses. Gabriella is now a student at Somerset Academy in Pembroke Pines, where she recently learned that a student’s mother had cancer. Although it had taken Gabriella three years to grow her hair long again, she did not hesitate when she saw the flyer about the Locks of Love event. “The more hair I donate, the more kids I can help,” said Gabriella. She donated a 14” pony tail, 4” longer than the requirement. She also visited several classrooms at the school to try to convince other students to donate their hair. Approximately 25 students, teachers and staff from the elementary and middle schools participated in the event.

TAG USA Gymnastics Creates Champions
T
AG USA Gymnastics had a stellar season, with championship trophies stacked up taller than most of its gymnasts. In the three short years since Marissa and Michael Zoldan became owners, they have built the gym into the most successful gymnastics program in Broward County. The couple shared TAG USA’s season highlights and the secrets to their success.
TAG USA Gymnastics had an incredible season. What were your greatest accomplishments? Marissa: It has been another great year
for TAG USA Gymnastics. This past season, our Level 3, Level 4 and Prep-Optional Girls teams all earned State Championships and many of our gymnasts were individual event State Champions. Five TAG USA gymnasts earned coveted spots on the Florida State Team. To qualify, the girls had to be the top scoring gymnasts in the State Meet in their age divisions. Our Boys Gymnastics team had a phenomenal year as well with nine individual State Champions, two Regional Champions and our Elite athlete won seven gold medals at the Mexican Nationals. Our Trampoline team won at each meet, finished first at the State Championships and qualified 26 athletes for the National Championships. Even our new Cheer team won their competitions to become State Champions. Michael: In the three short years that we have owned the gym, TAG USA has definitely become the premier gymnastics program in Fort Lauderdale. We have transformed and can compare ourselves to the top state gymnastics programs.
What are people saying about TAG USA Gymnastics? Michael: What the community hears most about TAG USA is that we are very different from the other local gyms. Our state-of-the-art facility and the amount of new equipment is amazing. Our classes are very structured with lesson plans and our coaches are fingerprinted and certified. All of our classes and team levels train by USAG standards and it makes a big difference. Mostly, parents hear about our gym’s growth and many championships and want their children to experience TAG USA’s unique gymnastics and trampoline programs. What is the secret to your program’s success? Marissa: The TAG
TAG USA Gymnastics Elite Team Scholarship Program All Level 9, 10 and Elite Girl Gymnasts are eligible for a Tuition Scholarship for the 2012-2013 Season. Application deadline is August 28th For more information contact Silvana at (954) 384-9393 our class or team athletes have to wait in lines or share equipment with groups. There is a lot of space and new equipment for all recreational classes and also separate equipment for our boys, girls, optionals and tramp teams. Our programs have more training and less waiting which allows for better workouts and success.
You have made customer service a top priority. Why is this so important? Marissa: When we first bought TAG we needed to change
TAG’s image. We immediately upgraded the coaching staff and created a serious gymnastics program, but we also made a commitment to customer service. One major difference between TAG USA and other gyms is the individual attention that every family receives from Michael and I. Our staff will get to know your family and make every effort to satisfy your child’s needs. Michael: At TAG USA, a parent can actually speak with an owner who will address their questions or concerns.
You recently added new air conditioning to the 38,000 squarefoot gym, what other changes have you made? Marissa: Everyone
knows that there are always changes and something new at TAG and we continue to add and improve our Weston facility. We opened a large bar pit for our optional athletes and added a second trampoline for our Tramp and Tumbling Team. We just completed an indoor basketball/soccer court for summer camp and classes, as well as a new Trampoline Jump Zone for moms and their younger kids to enjoy. We also opened a game room that will be used for birthday parties and Saturday Night Open Gym.
USA program pushes technique and trains for higher skills. As a former Elite gymnast, I know that in order to build a rock solid program you need to have an unparalleled coaching staff dedicated to teaching new skills and encouraging gymnasts to progress at their own pace. Other gyms hold back their gymnasts to repeat classes over and over or repeat team levels. Our gym encourages 2011 Level 4 Girls Gymnastics Champions athletes to progress. Here, a gymnast who masters skills can move up in levels at any point in the session. Before we bought TAG USA, our daughter Maia was a Level 5 gymnast at another gym, but after three years of training with our program, she is now on Level 10. We train at a very high level which is one of the reasons our athletes out-perform other gyms.
What else differentiates TAG USA Gymnastics from other gyms? Michael: When we bought TAG three
years ago, we determined that our gym needed to be completely different than other established gymnastic centers. Our children were members at another local gym and we knew that we wanted the “new” TAG to run differently in program content and customer service. Marissa: What’s most unique about TAG USA is the amount of training space within the gym. Neither

TAG USA Gymnastics is located at 1951 North Commerce Parkway in Weston. TAG USA offers recreational gymnastics classes for children from ages 12 months and up. With the Olympics taking place this summer, there’s been a lot of excitement around the gym. What is TAG USA’s connection to the Olympics? Michael: We are proud to have a former Olympic
coach on our staff. Our Optional Team coach, Alan Hatch, was one of the women’s coaches at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. His wife, Annia, won the silver medal. Coach Hatch helps our athletes in their passion for gymnastics by talking about his Olympic experiences and what it takes to train and compete at a high level. With Coach Hatch here, TAG USA is considered an Olympic Training Center and we have had many gymnasts, who have trained for the Olympics, come to train

Pembroke Pines Residents Celebrate Independence Day By Debby Teich
F
amilies and friends gathered throughout
Pembroke Pines to honor the nation’s birthday and celebrate Independence Day. Over 15,000 people enjoyed the celebration at the Pines Recreation Center Festival Grounds, sponsored by the City of Pembroke Pines. “The Annual Independence Day Celebration in the City of Pembroke Pines is always a big event,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the Pembroke Pines. “Residents enjoyed the Brass Evolution Top Forty Band, rides, Food Truck Roundups, games and our fabulous fireworks show.” Over 500 people attended the Annual 4th of July Barbecue and Celebration at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center. “The afternoon was packed with great food and music,” said Vice Mayor Shechter, who greeted guests along with Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis. Members of Saint Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church Knights of Columbus Council # 11410 grilled hamburgers and hotdogs in the Center’s garden. Residents of Hollybrook and the Center’s teen volunteers served the food, which also included over 600 pieces of watermelon. There was a DJ and prizes were awarded for the most patriotic outfit.

Find a Bargain at the Flea Market and Bazaar By Debby Teich
T
housands of bargain hunters from near and far are expected
to meet at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center in Pembroke Pines for the Flea Market and Bazaar. They will have an opportunity to search through tables of treasures from over 100 venders in an indoor, air conditioned room. The event will be held on August 25, from 8am to 3pm, and August 26, from 9am to 3pm. Admission and parking are free. There will be household items, toys, clothing, jewelry, record albums, baseball cards, tea pots, baby blankets and much more. There will also be food available in the Paradise Café. “A large crowd of people always gathers before the doors open,” said Helen Daniels, Recreation Supervisor for the SWFP Community Center. “They know what they are looking for and want to be the first to find it.” Daniels says that there are also plenty of kids shopping for toys, sports related items and other things. Doris Crinsky of Pembroke Pines recalls the time that she was searching for some pieces to match an old set of china. “I could not believe it when I found cups and plates to match,” said Doris. “They
were so inexpensive. I just love hunting for bargains.” The Flea Market and Bazaar is held four times a year and raises funds for programs at the SWFP Community Center. The Center offers trips and special events on a regular basis including the quarterly Pill Box Breakfast, self-improvement classes, educational classes, health classes and support programs presented by area professionals. It is a place to meet people, build a support network, find information, or simply read a book and shoot pool. Membership for adults 18 and older is free, but required. The Southwest Focal Point Community Center is located at 301 NW 103rd Avenue, in Pembroke Pines. CN the expert Ask
am often asked by patients who have had body
contouring procedures what they can do to maintain the results and continue to keep weight off to look good. The obvious answer as they know, but may not want to believe, is to exercise and eat less. But short of going through a severe calorie restriction that is required in the HCG diet, I recommend certain supplements to improve glucose and fat metabolism and help to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight, without severe caloric restriction. As we age, our metabolism changes and hormone levels decrease and the effects of years of cellular damage from poor dietary habits and lack of proper nutrition become more evident. One such supplement is green coffee bean extract. This substance works by blocking the destructive elevation of blood sugar that occurs after meals. The compound that is present in raw coffee beans that controls excess blood sugar is chlorogenic acid. It brings blood sugar under control by reducing the release of stored glucose into our bloodstreams and stopping the creation of excess glucose within our bodies. Taking 350 mg. three times a day resulted in an average weight loss of eleven pounds over twelve weeks, with a fat loss of 92 percent of the weight. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has been shown in studies to reduce fat and preserve muscle tissue. CLA helps you lose weight faster by reducing fat storage introduced by your daily diet and accelerating fat metabolism within the existing adipose (fat) tissue. Similarly, L-carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid which plays a vital role in the metabolism of fat. It functions as a transporter of fatty acids into the mitochondria, the metabolic furnace of the cell. Carnitine boosts energy by stimulating the body’s burning of triglycerides as fuel. L-carnitine allows the body to burn more fat. Another factor for patients who are unable keep the weight off once they have lost it, is the powerful effects of emotional stress and depression on the brain. This chemically triggers strong cravings for comfort foods and snacks. This is known as reactional hyperphagia. Emotional stress causes brain, chemical, and hormonal changes that decrease feelings of satiety (fullness) and promote the compulsion to snack. A saffron extract targets appetite dysregulation at the neurotransmitter level, inhibiting the compulsion – reward cycle. Research has shown that 176 mg. a day of a proprietary saffron extract decreased snacking events by an average of 55% with a resultant weight loss in patients as well. Constituents in saffron extract are believed to increase serotonin activity in the brain, which normalizes the biochemistry of appetite regulation. The pharmacologically active compounds in saffron are crocin and safranal. A proprietary extract containing these compounds uniquely targets appetite dysregulation to improve mood, reduce food cravings, and the urge to snack between meals. As with all supplements, there is no one “miracle” diet pill or weight loss remedy. No pill or supplement is a substitute for a balanced, healthy diet, including some degree of calorie restriction, low-glycemic foods, coupled with both cardiovascular and weight-bearing exercise. Patients should know that not all supplements affect each individual in the same manner. If you are uncertain whether you should be taking a specific supplement because of health conditions or medications you are taking, consult with your physician first. Dr. Messa is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. His office is located at 2823 Executive Park Drive, in Weston. Soma Intimates Is Making a Difference – One Bra at a Time By Debby Teich
A
bra is one of the least donated, but most in-demand items for
women in need. Through August 12, Soma Intimates at The Shops at Pembroke Gardens will be collecting new and gently worn bras as part of “Giving is Beautiful.” Since the program’s inception in 2010, the company has collected over 265,000 bras. Although Soma’s bra donation initiative is national in scope, it is local in nature – directly impacting the communities where the bras are donated. Each of the Soma Intimates’ 192 boutiques and outlets will work with a local women’s shelter to help women in need in that area. The bras from the Pembroke Pines location will be donated to the MiamiDade County Advocates for Victims, as well as Safespace North and Safespace South. An estimated 4 million women in the U.S. need the assistance of a shelter annually and many come with only the clothes on their backs. “When we learned that there are thousands of women going without an item that most of us consider part of our daily routine, we knew we had to do something,” said
Laurie Van Brunt, Soma Intimates’ Brand President. “At Soma, we believe that no woman should have to make the decision between putting food on the table and buying a bra. The simple act of donating a bra helps these women to focus on rebuilding and recovering from the hardships of domestic violence.” This year, to help raise awareness about domestic violence, Soma will once again partner with the National Network to End Domestic Violence. The NNEDV is the leading voice for survivors of domestic violence. It represents over 2,000 shelter programs throughout the United States. “NNEDV is thrilled to partner with Soma Intimates on its next ‘Giving is Beautiful’ Bra Donation,” said Sue Else, president of NNEDV. “Together we can make a difference in women’s lives, help close the gap on the lack of bras available in shelters and raise awareness to work toward ending domestic violence.” Soma Intimates is located at 331 Southwest 145th Terrace, at the Shops at Pembroke Gardens, in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954-538-9580 or visit www.soma.com/givebras.

message from the mayor
Pembroke Pines Update by Pembroke PInes Mayor Frank C. Ortis
T
his year is the 15th Anniversary of the Relay
for Life Pembroke Pines. WPLG Channel 10 Anchor Kristi Kruger and American Cancer Society’s Jules Meyers are the Co-Chairs for 2013 Relay for Life. I am the Honorary Chair of the event. The Mayor’s Relay Team has participated in the event since 2004, and the Pembroke Pines Parks and Recreations Department has assisted since the very first relay took place. I want to tell you about this year’s Relay for Life efforts to reach the fundraising goal of $165,000, in support of cancer survivors and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Cancer Survivors programs. Unfortunately, the earlier planned events were washed out by rain, but a new day was set and the community joined cancer survivors in the Relay for Life Walk at the 15th Annual City of Pembroke Pines Relay for Life at Pembroke Pines City Center on May 26th. Although the Encore Relay was pared down to four hours, the Relay still included the Survivor Walk, Care Giver Walk, Team Walks, and a “New Fun WALK titled “Miz Relay,” where guys dressed up as women and the donations they received counted as votes. Because of the bad storm in April and the shortened Relay weekend in May, we are $43,328 shy of our goal. If 43,328 people would donate just one dollar, we can meet our goal for this year to help fight cancer. Our City continues to be one of the most successful Relay events in the state of Florida and I am proud to support the American Cancer Society. With everyone’s help, a cure will be found. The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service. With more than two million volunteers nationwide, the American Cancer Society is one of the oldest and largest voluntary health agencies in the United States. My experience in participating in the Relay for Life is a special one, because I have an opportunity to talk with cancer survivors and listen to their personal stories of perseverance and strength. This event helps raise awareness about much-needed resources in the fight against cancer, as well as support for cancer survivors. The Relay for Life experience reminds us why the community must get involved in efforts to raise funds to support this cause. So many people in our community are touched one way or another by cancer; whether it is a family member, friend, co-worker or child, or any of us individually. The people who actually participate in the walk have reasons for walking in Relay For Life that are as unique and special as the story that motivates them to continue the fight for a cure. The fight is on-going, so there is still an opportunity to contribute to the cause. To help my Mayor’s Relay Team reach the $165,000 goal in support of a cure for cancer, please go on-line to make a donation at: http://main.acsevents.org/ site/TR?pg=team&fr_id=37601&team_id=1142180. Your contribution to the Relay for Life is an opportunity to not only honor cancer survivors and remember people we have lost, but also to raise funds and awareness to help save lives. Because of your support, we are creating a world where cancer can’t claim another year of anyone’s life. You are helping create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at fortis@ppines.com or call my office at 954-435-6505.

Legally Speaking
Are You a Victim of Predatory Lending Practices? By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
P
FREE DVD
redatory lending is when a lender imposes abusive, unfair and
sometimes illegal loan terms on borrowers, without regard for the borrowers’ ability to repay the loan. When two or more of the following factors are present in a mortgage transaction, the subsequent forensic audit performed on that loan has revealed serious violations of federal and state lending laws. Property Purchased or Refinanced Between 2003 and 2007. This four year period marked the peak of the real estate boom in South Florida. Just about anyone, including foreign nationals without regard for past credit history or current ability to pay, could obtain a “sub-prime” loan for up to 115% of the value of the mortgaged property. The sub-prime mortgage market thrived during this time, allowing borrowers to encumber their properties well beyond their true market values. Mortgage Loan Contains an Adjustable Rate or “ARM” Feature. These types of loans are initially set at an artificially low interest rate for a brief period of time. They then switch to an adjustable rate for the remaining term of the loan, and the rate can increase as often as every six months. Even if the U.S. interest rate index remains unchanged, the monthly payments on these loans could increase by up to 50%. Mortgage Loan Suffers From Negative Amortization. Negative amortization occurs when the monthly mortgage payment is not sufficient to even cover the interest due, and therefore, the balance of the loan increases over time even though payments have been made. If you owe more today on your home loan than when you originally purchased or refinanced, your loan is negatively amortized. Mortgage Loan is Interest-Only or Pick-a-Payment. Under these types of loans, the borrower is only required to pay the interest due on the loan, or a minimum payment that does not cover the interest on the loan. After a few years, the required monthly payment is usually increased to cover the outstanding principal balance. Once the loan payment increases, so does the likelihood that the borrower will default. Mortgage Loan Approval Was Based Only on Stated Income. Many borrowers from 2003-2007 were given “stated income” loans, in which they were qualified based on statements in the loan application as to their income. These statements of income were largely unverified, and often the “stated income” required for the loan to be approved was the exact amount included in the application by the mortgage broker. If two or more of these factors apply to your current loan, you should have a forensic audit of your loan performed to find out whether you have been a victim of predatory lending. If you possess these claims, and they are timely raised against your lender, you may be entitled to actual damages and/or a reduction of the amount you owe on your loan. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” Mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, and you will receive a free copy during your consultation with a member of our legal team.
The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to represent dozens of homeowners in our community with mortgage fraud, foreclosure defense and bankruptcy cases. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 1-800-770-7102 for a free consultation, or visit us at www.arcialawfirm.com.

The Era of the Gray Divorce By Evan Baron
T
he Baby Boomer generation has had a huge
impact on many categories of American life, from music to art to technology. Those same boomers are now impacting family law as well. Statistics have shown that the overall divorce rate over the past 20 plus years has actually declined. This could be because the marriage rate has decreased as well. In spite of this overall decline in divorce, the rate for those couples over 50 has doubled over the same span of time. This increase in the divorce rate of these boomers has led to the term “Gray Divorce”. There are probably many factors which have led to this increase. More and more people are celebrating their 50th birthdays and, as such, the over 50 population has increased. The greater the number of people, the greater the number of divorces. There are, however, other factors to be considered as well. People are generally living longer, which results in potentially very long marital relationships. As people age,

their prospective on life sometimes changes as well. Their mortality comes into issue and couples who are not happy in their marriage no longer wish to remain together for the later part of their lives. Some couples wait until their children are grown and have established their own lives. Parents feel that after raising their children it is now “their time” to explore and enjoy life. Unfortunately, in many instances their spouse is not who they wish to share this experience with. Finances are the most significant issues that accompany divorces for individuals in the later years of life. After years and years of working, owning a home and placing funds in retirement, the plans that were shared in the past disappear with the signing of a Final Judgment granting the divorce. In Florida, equitable distribution of assets almost always results in an equal division between the parties. As a result, each will have only half of what they owned together. Expenses will increase as there will be the necessity of funding two residences. This often times leads to parents moving in with their children or taking in a roommate. In addition, because of the fact that the majority of their working years are behind them, they have less time to try and re-coup their losses. Homes, which are usually a couple’s largest asset, will often have to be sold. Monthly pension checks that are divided between the parties often times result in a party having to continue working beyond the normal retirement age. There may be an alimony component which could cause additional financial complications. Although divorce proceedings for more mature adults can be less complicated due to the avoidance of child related issues, there are financial issues which less mature couples do not have to address. I strongly suggest that before decisions are made it would be best to discuss your concerns with an experienced family law attorney. If you have any questions, contact my office for a free consultation at 954-385-9160.

ance and music can provide a creative
outlet for both the physical and emotional spirit of children. Academy of Arts offers a warm, caring, family environment where students have an opportunity to nurture their love of the arts. All of the classes cost $45 per month and are offered for ages 3 to professional. The students learn from highly qualified instructors who have had professional careers. Academy of Arts offers instruction in: Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Tap, Flamenco, Modern, Belly Dancing, Musical Theatre, Voice, Piano, and Guitar. There are a variety of dance styles available for more serious students or others wishing to pursue a professional career. In Ballet alone, the Academy has five instructors and offers different styles used worldwide, including Vaganova and Chechetti. Students are taught by teachers from the Boston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Ballet Nacional, Royal Winnipeg Ballet and several of them are accepted each year in July. The staff brings their passion for the arts, knowledge, and experience to each and every student enrolled at the Academy. The focus at the Academy is not on dance recitals or competitions, but rather the training offered by an excellent dance education. Students participate in fundraisers, so there are no recital fees, no rehearsal fees, no minimum ticket purchases for performances, and no high-priced tickets to purchase. The Academy’s Performing Group is made up of students that have volunteered their time to be a part of many of the shows performed throughout the year. This year, students had the opportunity to perform at Disney, Century Village, Senior Focal Point, Miramar Cultural Center, and Bailey Concert Hall. The children are not auditioned, but rather given a chance to enjoy the art of dance.
50
The Academy’s Dance Company is comprised of very talented young dancers that have been auditioned to be a part of the special program. The Company represents a dancing group of the community and for the community. It is an intense program which includes training in all areas of dance needed to prepare the students for a professional career. These dancers are not only taught by the staff at the Academy, but are also given the opportunity to work with guest artists, and are encouraged to receive training in all areas to help them reach their full potential. In the past, many of the Academy’s graduating students had to choose between obtaining a college degree and pursuing a career in dance. The Academy of Arts Professional Company, Metropolitan Ballet of Florida, gives local professionals and talented artists the opportunity for employment. M.B.F. also gives former students employment opportunities, while they continue to train and receive compensation. Director Rebeca Russo-Columna is involved in the enhancement of each and every student at the Academy. Since she is at the school from opening to closing, all of the students benefit from her extensive training and experience. At an early age, she resolved to be a dancer and trained with a local dance studio. She was on scholarship with the Miami Ballet Company and the Opera Guild. At the age of 13, Rebeca was awarded a full merit scholarship from the
Ford Foundation to attend the National Academy of Dance in Champaign, Illinois and attended boarding school there. She was awarded first place in the U.S. National Merit Scholarship Competition for three consecutive years. Rebeca also received a full scholarship to the Banff Centre School of Fine Arts in Banff, Alberta, Canada. While in Canada, she was spotted by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet director, and later went on to dance and tour with the company. Rebeca has danced many soloist roles, and has performed in music videos, commercials, and many televised events with well-known entertainers. Rebeca is a certified teacher and has been teaching professionally since 1979. She opened Academy of Arts in 1994, and her hard work and dedication are reflected in the quality of her dancers and the success of the school. Her students have been accepted to some of the most prestigious schools in the country, including the Boston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Orlando Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Houston Ballet, Washington Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, Nutmeg Conservatory, Walnut Hill, and the Rock. They have also earned scholarships to the Chicago College for the Performing Arts, Hartt School of Music, Florida State University, New World School of the Arts, University of Central Florida and more. The Academy of Arts offers free trial classes for placement. It is open Monday to Saturday. It is located at Chapel Trail Trade Center, 20841 Johnson Street, Suite #113, in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954-704-0068 or visit www.academyofartsinc.com.
