Library Offers Book Fair and Youth Chess Competition By Debby Teich
T
his month , area youth will have an
opportunity to play in a chess tournament and purchase some books at the same time. The Friends of Southwest Regional Library are sponsoring a Book Fair, as well as chess tournaments for beginner and advanced youth players. All of the money raised will benefit the Southwest Regional Library in Pembroke Pines.
Chris Stormont, Certified US Chess Federation Tournament Director, will be leading the free, timed tournaments for ages 6 to 18. Players will be grouped by their self-selected levels and play five rounds on regulation chess sets that are provided by the library. A computerized program will match players throughout the tournament. Since is it is not single elimination, participants will continue to play even after they lose. All players will receive a medal and the top three winners will receive a trophy. “The chess tournaments bring together kids with like interests,” said Teen Services Librarian Lynn Morrison, who runs the chess program. “Chess is a wonderful game that dates back thousands of years. It requires problem solving skills, concentration, planning, discipline, and more.” The beginner tournament will be held on March 8, with pre-registration required by March 6. Many of the players are new to chess and participating in a tournament for the first time. The advanced tournament will be held on March 15, with pre-registration required by March 13. Many of these kids are experienced chess players and belong to chess clubs. Approximately 70 players from throughout South Florida are expected to participate in each tournament. Players can participate in both tournaments, which begin at 10am and typically last until 4pm.
Mentors from the library’s Youth Chess Club will help run the tournaments. They will assist players with procedures, help time the events and more. The chess club contains players of all levels, who meet on the first and third Saturday of each month, from 10:30am to noon. Approximately 25 students participate during the school year and the number increases to 100 during the summer. On March 15, from 10am-4pm, the library will hold a Book Fair, with a wide variety of gently used books in several languages for children and adults. There will be classics, as well as books for reference, cooking, SAT preparation, and much more. The library is still collecting book donations, which can be dropped off at the circulation desk. “There will be some great bargains,” said Wanda Stalnaker, vice president of the Friends of the Southwest Regional Library. “Most of the books are in excellent condition.” The Southwest Regional Library is located at 16835 Sheridan Street in Pembroke Pines. For information on the chess tournament, call 954-357-6733. For information on the Book Fair, call 954-357-6580.

embroke Pines resident B ernie D udas was only 17 years old
when he enlisted in the Navy and served as a gunnery and crane operator in the Pacific. After nearly 70 years, he finally has the “World War II Victory Medal” he earned, while fighting for our country’s freedom. In October 2013, Dudas was one of sixteen WW II Veterans selected to participate in the inaugural flight of the Honor Flight South Florida chapter. The volunteer, non-profit organization was created solely to honor America’s World War II and terminally ill veterans for all their sacrifices. Since 2005, Honor Flight has flown more than 100,000 veterans to Washington, D.C. from cities all over the country. This was the first flight from South Florida.

Rich Woolf presents Bernie Dudas with all of the medals he earned in WW II.
Since most of the veterans were in the 80’s and 90’s, each one was assigned to a younger veteran to assist them on the trip. Dudas was paired with Rick Woolf, 69, of Cooper City, who served from 1967 to 1970, with two deployments on a Navy ship off the coast of Vietnam. “Spending time with this special group of people was a fascinating and emotional experience,” said Woolf. “Bernie and the rest of the veterans talked about many of their experiences in WW II. When you hear the stories, as if they happened yesterday, you really appreciated the sacrifices they made so that we could enjoy the freedom we have today. As these WW II Veterans age, we are losing them at a rate of 800 a day. This trip is our way of honoring them.” While Dudas and Woolf were touring the World War II Memorial, they learned about the World War II Victory Medal, which was first established as a service ribbon by Congress on July 6, 1945. By the time it was approved as a full medal in 1946, many eligible World War II veterans had already been discharged from the service and never received the medal. When Woolf realized that Dudas was one of them, he was determined to get him the medal he deserved. For many years, Woolf and his wife have held an annual barbeque, which typically includes several veterans. This year, they added a recognition ceremony for Dudas. After Dudas’ daughter, Cindy Wolf, pinned the medal on her father, Woolf presented him with a medal case that included all the medals he earned through his World War II service. After the ceremony, the crowd enjoyed cake topped with patriotic decorations. Following the Marine Corps tradition, Dudas, as the World War II guest of honor, was joined by Korean War veteran Jim Feldman, 87, of Miami, the oldest veteran. After they cut the first piece of cake using Woolf’s Navy sword, they presented it to the youngest veteran, popular local entertainer Spanky Pionegro, 65. Since the trip, Dudas and Woolf have continued to spend time together. “We have developed a very special relationship,” said Woolf. On May 10, the Honor Flight South Florida chapter will send another group of Veterans to Washington D.C. This time, the group has chartered an entire plane, with room for approximately 100 WW II Veterans and 100 guardians. The guardians will pay for their own expenses and there is no cost to the veterans. The chapter has been working hard to raise much needed funds. rlene Cohen is a mother , athlete , F t. L auderdale firefighter ,
and a below the knee amputee. She is also an inspiration to most people who know her, especially those trying to overcome challenges. In February, the Pembroke Pines resident narrowly missed the opportunity to qualify for the U.S. Para-Snowboard team and compete at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games on March 7. Instead of giving up, she has set her sights on 2018. “I have been through a lot, but many others have been through worse,” said Arlene. “It is important to pursue your dreams. When you fall down, you just have to get back up and keep going. Set a goal and go for it!” Arlene was always active. During the summer, she went running, mountain biking, mountain climbing, hiking, water skiing and scuba diving. During the winter, she enjoyed snowboarding, cross country skiing and snowshoeing. In 2006, Arlene had a snowboarding accident that shattered the distal end of her left tibia. Over the next three years, she endured 14 surgeries for her ankle, which no longer functioned properly and left her in constant pain. In May 2009, an infection forced her to make a difficult choice - to fuse her ankle or amputate her leg. “I immediately said amputate,” said Arlene. “I knew that with a fusion I would never work as a firefighter. I would never run, participate in adventure races, snowboard, cross country ski or snowshoe, ever again. And most importantly, they could not guarantee that I would not have pain. I did research and found that there were amputee firefighters, snowboarders and runners. I wanted my life back. I wanted to ski and run with my daughter. If that meant losing a leg, it was fine with me. I knew I would be fine.” Arlene’s leg was amputated in September of 2009, but that did not stop her. She was snowboarding again by March 2010 and back to full duty as a firefighter in August 2010, two months ahead of schedule. She completed two 20-mile bike rides in November 2010, as well as a Muddy Buddy Race at Miami Zoo. She continued with paddleboarding, snowboarding, TRX, Pilates, and yoga. “Once I got back on my ‘feet,’ I wanted to reach out to others and show them that life can be lived to the fullest with an amputation,” said Arlene. “Not only can you reach the level you were at before the amputation, but also surpass it. Of course there are challenges, but able body people have challenges too.” In May 2012, the International Paralympic Committee announced that snowboard cross would be included in the alpine skiing program for the first time at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games. She wanted to be on the U.S. team. At 44, Arlene would be the oldest athlete competing. She started an intensive training program and began competing. “I was ready to quit so many times,” said Arlene. “Each time, however, I refocused and trained smarter.” Although she came close, she could not overcome a rib injury that she received in the Copper World Cup in February 2014. She did not quality for Sochi. “Initially, I was very discouraged,” said Arlene. “I had worked hard. I had received so much support from friends, family, fire family and strangers and did not want to let them down. The next day, however, I realized that 2018 could be my year.” Arlene plans to compete in the regional races in Canada and the nationals in Copper Mountain in both boarder cross and giant slalom. She also wants to begin speaking publicly to help motivate children, as well as adults. To follow Arlene’s journey, visit www.gofiregirl.com or follow her on Facebook at “Go Fire Girl Arlene Cohen 2014 Paralympic Contender.”

Take the Kids for Fun, Indoor Entertainment at The Wow Factory By Julie Levin

W
hen the heat is on in South Florida, and you want to treat the kids to a day of fun, make sure you head to The Wow Factory in Coconut Creek. With 22,000 square feet of indoor fun, The Wow Factory is a play and entertainment destination, ideal for anyone from toddlers up to preteens. Recently Tom Head, the owner of “The Wow Factory” answered some frequently asked questions about his business.
What is The Wow Factory? The Wow Factory
is a 22,000 square-foot indoor family entertainment facility located right off the Sawgrass Expressway in Coconut Creek. The inspiration behind this concept was, and still is, my kids. My wife and I have twin 10-year old boys, a nineyear old boy, and a seven-year old daughter. My background was commercial construction, but after many years taking my kids to birthday places and other facilities on weekends, I decided to take the plunge a do something that I considered bigger and better. I realized that my family was the target market. I simply followed the vision that if we created something that my family enjoyed, then everything would work out. I am always trying to look at the overall experience from the eyes of a parent, and it is my hope that this will always allow us to get better.
What are some of the activities and attractions offered at The Wow Factory? Our
activities include a multi-level Ballocity system, which is essentially a 3-4 level obstacle course and arena with an elaborate air compressor system, that allows kids to use blasters to shoot foam balls; an elevated “Sky-Trail” Ropes Course; a 2-level Laser Tag Arena; a 28’ Rock Wall; and over 50 video / redemption games. For the little ones we also have the “Wow Gym” which caters to the kids 3 and under.

All of these programs have been written by Pat Fucci, who has over 16 years experience developing children’s fitness programs. We see the Wow Gym as a great way to bring in moms and kids during the week, when older kids and/or siblings are in school.
Tell us about the more unique attractions at The Wow Factory. We have
two very unique attractions with Ballocity and our Sky-Trail ropes Course. The ballocity system is essentially a 3-4 level obstacle course and arena that allows kids to use blasters to shoot foam balls. The obstacle course has all kinds of play elements and five integrated slides that will completely wear out your kids. The elevated ropes course is very unique because it has over 16 different challenging course elements, and it is elevated over our arcade area. Children 48” and over can go by themselves, and children under 48” can be accompanied by an adult or parent.
What sets The Wow Factory apart from other children’s play gyms? I think the main
thing that sets us apart, besides our attractions, is our staff. We are very diligent in our hiring process and we really try to find the employees that have the personality and passion for being around kids. Most of our staff members are either high school or college kids. First and foremost, they must have kindness in their hearts and smiles on their faces. They must know how to have a good time, but always understand that the kids and guests come first. We constantly

adding another dimension to our business. We will be launching “Wow Bounce” which will be an inflatable rental business. With The Wow Factory, we want to be known as the best indoor party place. However, if you want to have a party at your house, we want to be able to service you as well. The same quality, courtesy and professionalism that we bring to The Wow Factory, will extend to Wow Bounce.
What days and hours are you open? During
the school year we are open Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Eating Healthy By Janai Hernandez
M
any people ask why it is so important to be
in shape or to be the right weight. The reality is that in this new era more and more people want to feel good, have more energy and, of course, look healthier. Every day, we see more gyms and spas opening, even in places like apartment complexes, where we hardly saw them ten years ago. The main problem is that we are a fast pace society. We do not have enough time to cook or are too tired to check out what is healthy or unhealthy to eat. Most of the time, we end up eating fast food, which in most cases contains a really high percentage of salt, fat, carbohydrates, sugar, antibiotics and preservatives. This is also what we feed our children. This is a society in which 8 out 10 kids, 15 years old and younger, are overweight, and 3 out of the 10 are obese. Seventy-percent of all worldwide deaths are caused by heart attacks, cancer, diabetes and strokes and the same percentage is attributed to doctor visits related to a bad nutrition. Only 2% of the population has optimal health. It has become harder and harder to find a solution to become healthier. Many times we look for fast diets to lose weight and are not sure how to keep the weight off. Sometimes people start diets and lose the weight, but as soon as they stop dieting they go back to their original weight or more.

What is the best way to lose weight? Surely, the best way is to be able to follow a diet for life. You must understand what is healthy and sustainable for you, since everybody is different. To become healthier and therefore lose, gain or maintain a desired weight, you must incorporate healthy and easy meals, as well as a balanced amount of exercise. The process is really simple. With a little planning over the weekend, you can create your meals and have them ready for your week. Healthy food should contain more proteins, vitamins, minerals, herbs, healthy fats and fiber. We are becoming a more health conscious society. People want to feel good and prevent diabetes or heart disease due to a poor nutrition, but everything requires an effort. Sometimes it’s hard to follow a diet. Many times is hard to go to the doctor and get the advice necessary to lose the weight one more time. Wouldn’t it be easier to learn what to eat, when to eat, and how to make better choices? If we learn the bare minimum of the amount of fruits and vegetables we need to eat a day, as well as the correct portions, we will be able to manage our weight and keep it off in a healthy way. We must also help our children to make better food choices that will lead them to healthier more active lives. Janai Hernandez is an Herbalife Independent Distributor. f want to become fluent in the only interna-
tional universal language, then all you have to do is visit your dentist. Back before there was language, there was the smile. Everyone knows what the smile means. Everyone knows how important it is. And everyone knows that for our smile to remain attractive, we must brush our teeth to keep them clean. Today, people’s teeth are whiter than they were in the past. Back then, people just didn’t have the means to keep their teeth white like they do today. Let’s begin our discussion on tooth whitening by starting with toothpaste. In 2000 BC, ancient Egyptians actually used toothpaste made of pumice stone and vinegar, which they brushed on with a chew stick. As gross as that toothpaste sounds, it was nothing compared to the one the Romans used. Theirs was made from human urine! First century Roman physicians maintained that brushing teeth with urine, particularly Portuguese urine, whitened teeth. In the 1300s, the most requested dental service, other than extractions, was tooth whitening. After abrading the enamel with coarse metal files, barber-surgeons would apply
“aquafortis,” a nitric acid solution, to whiten the teeth. This common practice continued into the eighteenth century. Fortunately, today we have more advanced and conservative methods to whiten teeth, but the challenges we face are greater. Teeth have tiny pores and it’s these pores that get occupied by stain. The most common causes of stains on teeth are age, genetic, smoke and coffee, but also red wine, tea, soda, juice, and various foods and beverages. So, in effect, when we are not whitening, we’re staining. As we age, our teeth become smoother, darker and become more highly saturated with color. Restoring teeth to a lighter shade with less color saturation gives one a more youthful look. During tooth formation, the mineralization process can be interrupted by tetracycline antibiotics and by excessive fluoride ingestion casing yellow-brown to grey-brown stains and white spots on teeth, respectively. Trauma to teeth can cause the nerve in the tooth to die and thus the tooth takes a dark color. After root canal treatment and whitening, these teeth can be restored to brilliant luster. Depending on the needs of the patient, whitening can be accomplished either at home, over several applications with clear trays lined with carbide peroxide gel, or in the dental office in one hour with hydrogen peroxide gel in a process known as power whitening. Power whitening is an excellent service offered for those who have a big event to go to that night and want their teeth whitened that same day. Carbamide peroxide consists of approximately one-third of hydrogen peroxide. The peroxide penetrates the porosities in the tooth and breaks down the stain. In conclusion, today’s technology offers effective, conservative approaches to the removal of even the most severe unaesthetic discolorations, allowing people to attain the bright healthy smile they thought was beyond their reach. To determine if you are a candidate for whitening, call Dr. Robert Perlstein, DMD for your free consultation at 954-894-2121. Dr. Robert Perlstein received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine and his Master of Science degree in Nutrition from the University of Florida. New Juvéderm Voluma XC for the Face By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.
T
he aging process results in prominent nasola-
bial folds, jowls, sagging facial skin, and flattening of cheekbone region. These changes occur as a result of a progressive loss of collagen and elastin of the skin and soft tissue volume in the cheeks. Now, for the first time, a new product from Allergan medical is available to help restore and rejuvenate the midface. Juvéderm Voluma XC helps enhance contour and create a more youthful profile for the face for up to 2 years. This hyaluronic acid filler is the first and only FDA-Approved filler for the midface. Voluma XC contains a modified hyaluronic acid (HA) derived from a naturally occurring complex sugar. A special cross-linking process in the synthesis of this product makes it last longer than its Allergan counterpart, Juvéderm XC, and the other available HA products: Restylane, Perlane, and Belotero.

The typical youthful face has a high cheekbone and soft gentle curve from the cheekbone downward. This area of the midface follows the shape of a natural-looking ogee curve. As the face ages, there is a progressive flattening of the cheekbone and midface. This resultant loss of volume causes the skin to sag. Soft-tissue volume can be restored to the face by the nonsurgical injections of Juvéderm Voluma XC. This procedure involves subcutaneous injection of this filler with a small needle. The Voluma lifts the cheek and restores a more youthful curve to the cheek. The patient may experience mild swelling or bruising at the injection site, and results of a single treatment have lasted up to two years in 76% of patients studied. Juvéderm XC can be injected in the lips, nasolabial folds, and other areas of facial wrinkles where superficial injections are indicated. Juvéderm can last up to one year in these areas. The efficacy of Voluma XC injections in other areas of the face has not been assessed. HA fillers like Voluma XC and Juvéderm XC provide immediate results filling facial lines and wrinkles. Sculptra differs from Voluma XC in that the soft tissue enhancement that results from an inflammatory reaction the product causes after it is injected. This reaction can occur over a period of days to months with results lasting up to two years. Unfortunately, these results depend on the degree of inflammation and vary from patient to patient. As a result, soft tissue enhancement can be unpredictable. In clinical studies performed with Voluma XC, patients perceived themselves to look 5 years younger 6 months after treatment, and 3 years younger 24 months after the treatment. The aging process is complex. Optimal rejuvenation requires a proper assessment of each patient’s facial anatomy, individual appearance goals, and discussion of the treatment options available, both surgical and nonsurgical. Juvéderm Voluma XC is another excellent option available in the array of products available to refresh, rejuvenate, and restore a more youthful appearance to the face. Advanced Treatment for Cancer-causing Polyps Removing polyps from the colon is standard practice to reduce the chance of colorectal cancer. But for polyps that are large or hard to reach, their removal during a colonoscopy is a challenge. Though many patients have traditional surgery for these “complex polyps,” Cleveland Clinic gastroenterologists are using new tools and techniques that require no stitches or long recovery times. It’s a procedure called “endoscopic mucosal resection,” or EMR. An endoscope is a thin flexible tube with a tiny camera, to which small surgery tools are attached. “Mucosal” refers to the tissue of the colon, and “resection” means surgical removal.
Tolga Erim, DO Cleveland Clinic Florida Gastroenterologist
“Many patients and physicians may not be familiar with EMR or do not have access to it locally, so these polyps are often removed using traditional surgery,” says Cleveland Clinic gastroenterologist Tolga Erim, DO who specializes in advanced endoscopy techniques. “But EMR gives patients another choice. With experienced specialists performing it, there is less risk of bleeding, and a much shorter recovery time compared to surgery.” During the procedure, Cleveland Clinic physicians employ several standardized procedures to reach and remove the polyps. “For example, by injecting saline into the tissue, they can raise the polyp in order to resect it completely. In addition, newer snares, or metal loops, and tools to cauterize (seal) blood vessels make removal very efficient,” Dr. Erim says. After a follow-up visit, patients can return to their regular physicians. According to reports from the National Institutes of Health, patients with large or complex polyps should be referred for EMR to a specialty facility such as Cleveland Clinic Florida, so they can avoid unnecessary surgery. “We’ve treated patients from as far away as South America,” Dr. Erim says. “Because of our expertise and experience with EMR, this is the appropriate place to come for hard-to-treat polyps. We’ve become a referral center for it.”

What Homeowners Need to Know about Florida’s New Speedy Foreclosure Law By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
A
fter a two year effort, Florida legislators approved a new
foreclosure law that significantly affects the rights of homeowners struggling to pay their mortgages. Under the veil of “helping Florida’s economic recovery,” Governor Rick Scott signed House Bill 87 into law on June 7, 2013. Unless this new law is overturned by the courts, it is expected to have a profound impact on the foreclosure process in favor of the banks and homeowners’ associations. The new law permits a lender or its servicer to file a foreclosure action and, instead of being required to prove its right to foreclose, it unfairly shifts the burden on the homeowner to “prove” that the lender “does not have the right” to foreclose. This new procedure is time sensitive, and if the homeowner does not provide the necessary evidence, a final judgment of foreclosure is entered. In as quickly as 45 days, the property could be sold at a foreclosure auction. The new law also provides homeowners’ associations with same expanded rights to quickly evict non-paying homeowners through this new expedited foreclosure process. For homeowners that are behind on their mortgage or HOA payments (but not yet in foreclosure), it is imperative that you immediately consult with a legal professional about your case. There are a number of “pre-foreclosure” steps that must be taken in order to defend yourself and your family from this new speedy foreclosure law. Remember you will only have a limited amount of time (20 days) to prove that the party suing for foreclosure does not have the legal right to do so. This means that the evidence needs to be gathered before the foreclosure process starts, and there are critical requests for information that must be presented to lenders prior to a foreclosure to avoid losing your home. The new speedy foreclosure law also states that if your house is foreclosed on fraudulently, you cannot get it back. You will only be entitled to file an action for damages against the lender or other party that obtained the wrongful foreclosure. We all know that in foreclosure cases there are a disturbing number of mistakes being made by banks and their attorneys. For those homeowners currently in foreclosure, it is critically important that any mistakes in the process be identified and brought to the attention of the court BEFORE a final judgment. In short, this new speedy foreclosure law is wrong, and it clearly violates the due process rights of the good citizens of Florida. It will force many more homeowners into bankruptcy as the only reliable means of saving their home. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. L
ong before coming into public office, I experienced the benefits that social service organizations and churches provide to our community. Broward County has over 300 social service organizations that assist the County with providing care to infants, children, the elderly, medically needy and homeless residents. Non-profit organizations have traditionally been looked upon as optional organizations. Unfortunately, when times are tough these agencies are hurt the most by budget cuts. However, we are in a time where the economy and social issues dictate a severe need for these organizations. In addition, we have churches that cannot obtain lending from traditional sources due to their non-profit status even though they are some of the most profitable non-profit organizations that we have. You may be familiar with some of the larger organizations such as the United Way, Boys and Girls Club, Meals on Wheels, and 211-Broward. There are many others that are unable to fully service their clients because funding is limited. To show my support for non-profits, I will be partnering with FPL this month for their Power to Care project day at Children’s Harbor, a residential foster care center in West Pembroke Pines for sibling groups & pregnant or parenting foster teens and their babies. I toured this facility recently and I and other volunteers will help with painting the entire inside of one of the sibling homes and performing minor repairs that are needed.
port is the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center (SBARC). At the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center we allow the mother and her children to reside in our residences providing them a safe place to start again. We are the only center in Broward County that has this unique housing situation. This prevents the children from entering or returning to the foster care system. Families at our center benefit from comprehensive services that address complex issues affecting them. Our goals are to assist women in recovery to live an independent life, bond with their children and lead a healthy family lifestyle. Next month I will be honored at the JM Family Enterprises African American Achievers Award. As part of that honor, JM Family Enterprises will donate $10,000 to a local charity of my choice and I have chosen SBARC to receive these funds. This organization keeps the family together and strengthens it even further with their programs. Still, there are many organizations that need our help. Many families need access to affordable childcare and assistance for providing three healthy meals a day. Children cannot learn if they are hungry.

My role in public service has given me the opportunity to tour the many non-profit social services organizations that provide necessary services to those in need. We need to do a better job of showcasing the benefits of our non-profit organizations in Broward County. As Mayor, I want to advocate for dollars to fund services such as: housing assistance, education on preventative healthcare, substance abuse and recovery programs, as well as adult education to retrain those who need to re-enter the workforce. Broward County’s Office of Economic and Small Business Development Division has committed to help register, certify, and appropriately classify these businesses. I have also been fortunate enough to talk with the Governor’s office to work on programs to provide lending support for small non-profits. These initiatives will complete the holistic approach we have been looking for in Broward County and hopefully gets us even closer to ending homelessness and put the focus on non-profits that have helped the community through tough times and to give them the ability to continue to do so for years to come. Dissolution and Financial Disclosure By Evan Baron

of Marriage are often surprised to learn how much personal financial information they must reveal. The laws of this state require complete financial disclosure. Most people get overwhelmed with this requirement, since it can be very time consuming. Since Florida is a “No Fault” state, the primary area of dispute between a husband and wife is usually financial. The following is a list of the financial information required pursuant to Florida law. All parties MUST complete a Financial Affidavit. This Affidavit list a party’s income, expenses, assets and liabilities. It is a sworn document, signed under oath by the client, swearing to its truthfulness. A financial affidavit must be filed in all dissolution proceedings, even in the most simplified uncontested matter.

In addition to the financial affidavit, certain documentation must also be exchanged between the parties within approximately six weeks from the date of filing. If it is a simplified divorce this requirement can be waived by both parties. The Financial Affidavits must be produced however. The documents that are required include: ▸▸ Income tax returns ▸▸ Pay stubs for the past three months ▸▸ Statement of income ▸▸ Loan applications and financial statements prepared during the preceding 12 months ▸▸ Deeds, leases and promissory notes executed during the past 12 months ▸▸ Checking account statements for the past three months ▸▸ Bank statements (other than checking) for the past 12 months ▸▸ Brokerage account statements for the last 12 months ▸▸ The most recent statements showing value of retirement accounts, profit sharing or deferred compensation accounts ▸▸ Life insurance documentation ▸▸ Credit card statements for the past three months The above list is just a partial list of what might be required. Requests often require documents dating back three years. It is not unusual that clients often become quite anxious when assigned the task of gathering this information. Here are a few words of advice: ▸▸ Do not wait for the last minute to gather these items. Time deadlines are extremely important and any delays could result in sanctions. ▸▸ Don’t try and do everything at once. Give yourself enough time to “pace yourself”. ▸▸ Be as accurate as possible in filling out all Financial Affidavits. Please remember that it is a sworn document and your answers (if incorrect) can be used against you. ▸▸ Do not ignore items or questions you feel are not relevant. If you have an attorney, don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek his/her advise. It can make this task a lot less stressful for all concerned. The law firm of Evan H. I-75 Overpass Project Begins By Mayor Frank C. Ortis
C
urrently, Pembroke Road dead - ends east of
I-75 at Southwest 145 Ave. and starts again on the west side of I-75 at Silver Shores Blvd, continuing approximately two miles to SW 184 Ave. However, to the relief of many residents and the City Commission, that’s about to change. After years of working with City, County, State and Federal officials, Pembroke Pines got the good news they were waiting for. The I-75 improvements and Pembroke Road bridge construction project is scheduled to start the first quarter of this year. According to Acting City Engineer Karl Kennedy, the project will be completed under two contracts. The first contract includes the approaches to the bridge, and the second contract is construction of the bridge itself with I-75 improvements. The first phase of the project is being managed by Broward County. It includes the western approach to the bridge from Silver Shores Blvd east to I-75 and includes a sound barrier wall. It also includes the eastern approach from SW 145 Avenue west to I-75. Construction of this phase is expected to be completed in May 2015. The second phase is being managed by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and includes the I-75 Express Lanes and the Pembroke Road overpass bridge. The express lane improvements generally consist of a barrier wall with a divided four-lane tolled roadway (two 12-foot travel lanes in each direction). This phase/contract also includes reconstruction of the Miramar Parkway Interchange. At the request of FDOT, flexibility has been incorporated into the design so that if FDOT proposes an interchange in the future, the overpass can be retrofitted to accommodate entrance and exit ramps from I-75. Bids were received by the City for the first contract on November 13, 2013 for the approaches to the bridge. FDOT received price proposals for the I-75 bridge on January 14, 2014. The completion date for the bridge itself will be known when the second contract is awarded; however, the estimate is some time in 2016.

he process of getting your home ready to be
listed for sale on the market goes beyond the two most important aspects of simply finding the correct Realtor to sell your home and setting the price right. Sellers generally want their home to sell quickly and, in the process, maximize the amount they receive for the property. However, very few of these sellers even think about prepping their home for that “easy sale.” Sellers have a great deal of control over how their property is perceived. There are quite a number of things that you as a seller can do to prepare your home for sale and to maximize its value in the eyes of prospective buyers. Below are just a few tips on preparing to sell your home. Before preparing your home for sale, prepare yourself first. Learn to separate your emotions from the selling process. I admit this is very difficult to do; however, it is best if you totally disconnect. You should not look at this as your home, but as a product that you need to market and sell for the highest possible price. Do not take Realtor and prospective buyer opinions of the home personally. While getting accustomed with the mindset of detaching your emotions from the sale, it is also best to start thinking of de-personalizing the property. This may seem harsh, but a buyer tends to visualize the property as his or hers, and not yours. This can be accomplished by removing family portraits, personal photos and other personal items that could distract the buyer that is viewing the property.

Another selling advantage is to totally de-clutter. Buyers want to get a good feel for the layout and space within the house. Cluttered closets and garages are a big turn-off to buyers. Beating your competition with condition is another important factor. Anterior Cruciate Ligament Rupture in the Young Athlete By Dr. Al DeSimone
A
nterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) ruptures
remain one of the most devastating injuries to the young competitive athlete. The ACL is the major supporting ligament within the knee joint providing stability to the knee during running, cutting and twisting sports. Though a traumatic collision with another athlete can cause a rupture to the ACL, a sudden alteration in speed and/or change in direction can also predispose an athlete to this injury. The athlete will often describe a loud popping sensation within the knee joint and experience severe pain, swelling and weakness combined with an inability to ambulate. Diagnosis is usually made by obtaining a proper history of injury and by performing a thorough clinical examination of the involved knee. X-rays and MRIs are extremely beneficial during this evaluation and will often help rule-out concomitant injuries to the adjacent ligaments, menisci and/or cartilage.
The goal of treatment is to return the athlete back to his or her prior level of activity, including competitive sports. Rarely, one may consider conservative/nonoperative treatment for those patients that are extremely sedentary and inactive in athletics. In this incidence, treatment may include rehabilitation, bracing and restriction to certain activities. For those individuals who are competitive athletes and participate in high-demand twisting sports, surgical ACL reconstruction is the treatment of choice. Over the last several years, I have seen numerous patients with surgical failures from prior ACL reconstructions that have been referred to my office for further consultation and revision surgery. Having performed over 1,700 Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstructions and over 200 revision surgical procedures, I remain convinced that this procedure is extremely technical and should be treated with state-of-the-art surgical technique and attention to detail. Though re-injury may be a common cause of failure subsequent to ACL reconstruction, technique related failures are commonly seen and can often occur from improper graft selection, tunnel placement, graft tensioning, and/or methods of fixation. Timing of surgery and proper postoperative instructions, including return to athletics, also play a significant role in prevention of re-injury. In concordance with the literature barring any anatomical or growth related considerations, I prefer to utilize bone-patella tendon-bone autograft for the young, high-demand athlete. Treatment of an Anterior Cruciate Ligament rupture continues to be a challenging problem for the high school, collegiate and community athletes. It is imperative that young individuals (and parents) understand the importance of pursuing treatment by an experienced surgeon, preferably with a subspecialty interest in knee ligament reconstruction. Failure to do so may predispose an athlete to additional surgery and prevent return to sports in a timely manner. Al DeSimone, MD, is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon, Fellowship Trained in Sports Medicine. He specializes in Complex Knee Ligament and Shoulder Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. DeSimone is the Director of Sports Medicine at Sports Medicine Associates of South Florida P.A. He practices at the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, Weston, FL 33326. To schedule an appointment, please call (954) 389-9178. Slender Fit U Makes Dieting Easy By Debby Teich
S
lender Fit U is helping clients turn their
bodies into fat burning machines. They are losing 1/2 to 2 pounds of fat per day without exercise, diet pills or packaged foods, and they are keeping it off. The medically supervised program helps dieters modify their relationship with food and eating, resulting in an easily maintained, longterm weight loss. It is the last diet they will ever need to do. Geri Kelleher, Owner and Program Director, answered some commonly asked questions about the program. Why do people call you the “HCG Guru”? Seven years ago, I lost 25 lbs. on the diet and it changed my life. For the past six years, I have helped thousands of people achieve their weight loss goals with this program. The best part of my job is seeing people change before my eyes and watching them get their confidence back. Geri Kelleher, Owner and How does Slender Program Director Fit U differ from similar programs? My clients tell me that the difference is the way we treat people. We stay involved with all of our clients; they are not just a number. If they miss an appointment, we call them. We make sure that every client gets the proper guidance and support throughout the program and achieves their weight loss goals. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest dosage for weight loss. We also give injectable prescription B12. How much can clients expect to lose? Clients can choose a 23-day program or a 46-day program. Women typically lose 15 lbs. in the 23-day program
and up to 30 lbs. in the 46-day program. Men typically lose more - 20 to 25 lbs. in 23 days and 40 to 50 lbs. in 46 days. What is HCG? HCG (Human Chronic Gonadotropin) is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists in men and women. During pregnancy, it is produced in very high levels and almost completely controls the metabolic function. In non-pregnant individuals, research suggests HCG similarly increases the metabolism. Does the HCG have side effects? There are no side effects reported while using HCG for weight loss. The amount of HCG used in the diet protocol is a very tiny dose. Because it is a natural substance, this program is completely safe. What makes the diet so effective? Unlike other “diets,” this program reshapes and re-sculpts the body by releasing abnormal fat deposits. Every pound you lose is a pound of FAT, which is very different from losing a pound of weight. You are not losing muscle mass, or water. You also lose multiple inches and dress sizes and your shape changes. Do clients keep the weight off? Ninety percent of Slender Fit U clients keep the weight off. After completing the program successfully, they support and rebalance their metabolisms. In addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat, they modify their relationship with food and eating, resulting in easily maintained, long-term weight loss. Are clients medically supervised? Yes. Every patient has a comprehensive physical with the medical doctor before starting the program, as well as one-on-one counseling throughout the program. This is included in the price.
A
pril Claxton recently
lost 40 pounds in only six weeks at Slender Fit U. She was anxious to share her story to motivate others to do the same. Why did you decide to lose weight? I have always been chunky. When I turned 35, my body started responding differently and I gained a lot of weight. I had difficulty breathing, walking and sleeping. I always felt swollen and tired, and spent most of my time at home on the couch. I have tried every diet out there. I was contemplating surgery, but decided April Claxton lost 40 lbs. in six weeks. to try Slender Fit U first. What were your results? I am 5’6. I started the program at 296 lbs. and lost 40 of them in only six weeks. I am excited to lose the rest. How do you feel now? In only six weeks, I am like a different person. I am now exercising and have gotten rid of several medications, including one for high blood pressure. I feel empowered, more confident and very sexy. People are looking at me instead of past me. I feel pretty and alive! Why were you more successful with Slender Fit U than other diets? I never had a real coach who supported me throughout the process. Geri answered all of my questions and helped me stay on track. She wanted me to succeed as much as I did. In addition, I saw instant results, with a 10 lb. loss in only ten days. When I saw how well my body responded, I knew I had found the right program.
Does the diet involve exercise? Exercise is not required and does not improve your end result. It is a scientific program and it is the combination of the HCG and the low calorie diet that produces the weight/fat loss. However, exercise is allowed.
Can you purchase HCG over the counter? No. Real HCG cannot be purchased over the counter. The HCG comes in both an injectable and an oral form from the pharmacy. Consultations are free and by appointment. For information and to see more before and after photos, visit www.SlenderFitU.com or call 954-423-1376.
Is the diet easy? To quote one of my clients, “Besides being the most effective diet I have ever gone on, this was the easiest diet I have ever been on. Almost every morning when I got on the scale, my weight would be down. No long workouts, no agonizing hunger pains. That’s how great this diet is.” What foods are on the diet? There are no packaged meals. You are eating real food from the grocery store that includes protein, fruit and vegetables. This makes it an easy transition onto stabilization, as well as regular eating and regular life.
Lost 30 lbs. in six weeks.
48
Are patients hungry on the diet? Eighty percent of people experience no hunger on the Slender Fit U program. They even find very tiny servings to be completely satisfying. HCG dieters usually feel as though they are stuffing themselves in order to reach that 800 calorie limit!
