he excitement of the London Olympics is over, summer vaca-
tions are fading into mere memories, and the kids are back in school. Our lives are slowly returning to ‘normal.’ Before everyone gets too busy with after school activities, sports and music lessons, make time for fun. The fall season in Florida has plenty to offer for fun in the sun. The sun is not quite so scorching hot, and the ocean waters are still warm and beautiful. Turn off the TVs and game consoles for a bit and get out there to enjoy the surf, go shelling, visit the Florida Keys, take a tour through the Everglades, get out on a boat and catch some fish, visit the nation’s oldest city, or enjoy the thrills of your favorite theme parks in Orlando and Tampa. Whatever your pick, just do it together. Our hectic lives force us to spend time separated from our loved ones for most of the day, so make sure you take the opportunity to enjoy each other’s company when you can.

to find the information I needed.” In December 2011, Arbitman and Nelson launched Imuneek.com, which caters to people with all types of medical conditions and disabilities—both mental and physical. The website already has more than 550 members. There is no cost to join and users can remain anonymous. The website instantly connects individuals to others who share their “uniqueness” and also links them to companies and organizations that speak to their specific needs through discussion forums, online support and event announcements. The site offers more than 40 general categories, including: aching bones, ADHD, AIDS, autism, blindness, cancer, Crohn’s disease, deafness, depression, diabetes, joint pain, insomnia, pregnancy, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and more. “If the website existed when I lost my vision, I could have created a profile saying that I was blind,” said Arbitman. “In an instant, I would have been connected to other blind people, as well as the companies that cater to us.” A year ago, Arbitman’s first daughter was born. He has been using the site to learn how to be a blind parent. “If I am going through it, so are other people,” he continued.
dition or disability, Michael Arbitman of Pembroke Pines turned to the Internet for help when he lost his vision. Frustrated with the lack of available resources, he teamed up with Lixon Nelson to create www.Imuneek.com. “The website connects people and lets them know that they are not alone,” said Arbitman. Several years ago, Arbitman, who is a lifelong diabetic, had an eye infection which left him legally blind. “I received my Ph.D. in computer science and computers were my life,” said Arbitman. “It was devastating not to be able to do my job or use a computer.” He typed “blind Broward County” on Google and began searching for help. With a lot of digging and phone calls, he was able to get free 411, special software for navigating the computer, disability, and more. He was easily able to connect with people in other cities, but found it harder to meet people who could help him locally. “I spent two years of my life trying to find information that should have been at my fingertips,” said Arbitman. “I needed answers to real life questions that doctors could not answer.” During that time, he met Lixon Nelson, who was affected by Crohn’s disease. “My experience was Caption: Michael Arbitman and Lixon Nelson similar to Michael’s,” said Nelson. “It was very difficult created www.Imuneek.com.

Look, Buy or Sell at the Stamp and Coin Show By Debby Teich
A
re you a collector or perhaps you inherited stamps and/or
coins? Do you want to begin a new hobby, or simply understand the value of your inheritance? If, so attend the next Pembroke Pines Stamp and Coin Show on September 9, from 10am to 3pm, at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center in Pembroke Pines. There will be 25 tables of dealers interested in buying, selling or appraising coins and stamps. There will also be venders selling jewelry. The public is invited to look, buy, sell, or simply ask questions. This is the third time the show will be held at the Center. “This is a tremendous event for us to host” said Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing for the City of Pembroke Pines. “The coin and stamp dealers all enjoy an outstanding reputation in their fields. Many of them began their collections of stamps or coins in their teens. They know the value of the items that are brought to them.” The study or collection of currency, coins, tokens, paper money, and related objects is called Numismatics. The term applies to collectors and coin dealers, as well as scholars using coins as source or studying coins. Harvey Bastacky, Bourse Chairman, has been collecting coins for nearly 50 years. His grandfather owned a liquor store in Miami. When customers paid for their liquor with old coins, he gave them to Harvey. One day Harvey found a penny worth $100 and he got hooked on numismatics. Now he specializes in collecting early half dollars, from 1800 to the 1830’s. He has over 600 of them, worth anywhere from $40 to $2,000, depending on the date and quantity produced. “It is a great hobby,” said Harvey. “I enjoy attending shows and clubs where I meet other people who have the same interests.”
The Southwest Focal Point Community Center is located at 301 NW 103rd Avenue, in Pembroke Pines. For information on the show, call 954-424-8776 or send an email to harveybastack@comcast.net. The last Pembroke Pines Coin and Stamp Show attracted a large crowd.

fter training for more than a year, members of the
Panther’s Taekwondo competition team recently had a chance to display their talents. In July, they competed at the national level and took home 14 medals, ranging from Bronze to Gold. The students qualified at States in Miami and AAU Taekwondo events in Orlando to become eligible to compete at the national level. They joined more than 1,900 State qualified competitors from across the country for the one week AAU Taekwondo national event. Twelve members of the Panther’s Taekwondo team competed, including Instructor Daniel Matarazzo. They represented a variety of belt colors, from white to black. The team won nine medals in Sparring and five in Forms. “The students have been training hard and are very dedicated to this Olympic sport,” said Matarazzo. “They have continued to up their game throughout the year and I am very proud of them.” Matarazzo says that the sport does wonders for the kids, by teaching them self-confidence, respect, balance, agility, coordination and more. They learn to focus, which often helps improve their grades in school. The students practice several days a week on the Somerset Academy Middle School campus in Pembroke Pines. They are taught by Head Master Nick Franchella, who holds high ranking black belts with over 50 years in Martial Arts experience, as well as Matarazzo, who has over 20 years in mixed martial arts. Pembroke Pines Children Get a Lesson from “Big Mouth” Artist By Debby Teich
A
ward-winning artist Jacklyn Laflamme loves what
she does and is eager to share her passion. This summer, she used her “Big Mouth” to teach children how to explore their own creativity. She met with several groups of kids at summer camps and libraries, as well as in her studio at Studio 18 in the Pines, to implement a project she calls The Voice. She provided the children with a real hands-on art education and an understanding of how to let their inner artistic voices out. Through September 28, their work will be on display at the City of Pembroke Pines Studio 18 in the Pines, as part of a larger art show titled “Serendipity.” Laflamme has sold hundreds of paintings through galleries and direct commissions. She has become well-known for her vibrant fun-filled art, such as the “Big Mouth” series, which includes four paintings and a sculpture. For The Voice, each group of children participated in a different project, based on the original acrylic painting in the series, which is 66 by 54 inches. One group cut out a mouth from paper and used markers, beads, pipe cleaners and other items to decorate it. Another group used water colors to create a mouth and wrote stories on the tongue. A different group made mouths from clay. “The children learned about the entire process of creating a work of art from start to finish,” said Laflamme. “They also had the opportunity to exhibit their work in a professional gallery setting.” With art programs being cut or eliminated in many schools, Laflamme feels it is even more important to introduce art to children in other ways. “As artists, we have a responsibility to give back,” said Laflamme. “Children have incredible imaginations. They are so uninhibited, and their minds overflow with creativity. The Voice is a unique opportunity for them to help find their “artistic voice”. It is also a chance for them to meet and work with a professional artist. I want them to understand that it is possible to make a living by selling art and doing something they love.” Laflamme applied for and received a grant to help pay for The Voice. She is also well-known for several other grant-funded projects. She illustrated “The Fairy Tale Project,” which is a series of children’s books that promotes literacy. She is a curator for “Doing Business As…Artist Entrepreneurs,” a yearly Exhibition at Gallery 6 at the Broward County Main Library, which helps emerging artists promote their work. She has also worked on a variety of vibrant murals around town. On Sept. 7, from 7 to 9pm, Laflamme will speak about her vision for The Voice. Refreshments will be served at the event, which is free and open to the public.

Funding for The Voice is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council. It is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. Studio 18 In The Pines is located at 1101 Poinciana Drive, in Pembroke Pines. Eleven Residents Join City of Pembroke Pines CERT Team By Debby Teich
H
urricanes, tornadoes, plane crashes
and building collapses, as well as other natural disasters and large scale tragic events, are often reminders that we are all vulnerable. If Pembroke Pines were to experience a true emergency, communication failures and road blockages might prevent people from accessing emergency services they have come to expect at a moment’s notice through 911. It could take hours or even days for emergency personnel to reach everyone in need. Eleven residents were recently trained to respond in an emergency to help themselves, as well as their friends, families and neighbors until the proper help arrives. The graduates are the newest members of the City of Pembroke Pines Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).
CERT is a FEMA program that educates citizens about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills. “The people who register for this class are interested in learning firsthand about fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations,” said Sergeant James Henry, facilitator of the CERT Program. The CERT course is delivered in the community by a team of first responders who have the requisite knowledge and skills to instruct the sessions. Through training, citizens can manage utilities and put out small fires; treat the three killers by opening airways, controlling Caption: Eleven residents recently graduated from bleeding, and treating for shock; provide basic medical the City of Pembroke Pines CERT program. area,” said Pembroke Pines Police Chief Dan Giustino. aid; search for and rescue victims safely; and organize themselves and The classroom and hands-on training is free and open to spontaneous volunteers to be effective. residents who are 18 years and older. Veterans’ Resource Center Opens in Pembroke Pines By Debby Teich
C
ity officials and other dis-
tinguished guests recently gathered for the Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening Celebration of the First Stop Veterans’ Resource Center –South in Pembroke Pines. Attendees included Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank Ortis, President/ CEO of Miramar Pembroke Pines Chamber Robert Goltz, Pembroke Pines City Commissioner Jay Schwartz and many more. The Center addresses the growing needs of homeless and at-risk veterans and their families. The Center is an extension of Home for American Heroes, a community-based organization formed two years ago to help returning veterans find safe, decent affordable housing. Many participated in the Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening Celebration of the First Stop Veterans’ Resource Center –South. Organizers quickly realized that the veterans needed much more than housing. “These veterans answered our countries’ call and ments and utilities: job readiness skills and assessments; job training; employment and served,” said George Medina, Center president. “Many came back with injuries and legal services; VA/SSA benefit registration information; peer-to-peer support groups; serious issues and they need our help getting their lives back in order. Our goal is to outreach services and referrals; and much more. The program provides them with a help them in any way that we can.” “helping hand” not a “hand out”. First Stop Veterans’ Resource Center –South partners with citizens, corporations, and local businesses to help veterans that are in need. It offers short-term/emergency The Center is located at 1152 N University Dr., Suite 202, in Pembroke Pines. Students Complete Conversational English Course By Debby Teich
A
group of 13 students is learning the English language and
settings. In Level 2, students expand their basic configuration and conversational patterns of Modern English. In higher levels, they study conversational techniques and practice these techniques through structured dialogs and pair practice conversations. “We have received an overwhelming response to this innovative program and are pleased to be able to offer these classes to our community,” said Helen Daniels, Recreation Supervisor at the Center. Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services for the City of Pembroke Pines, added “The great success of these classes is a reflection of our community. Each step forward reminds us that the basis for this community is diversity and that together, we make this a stronger and more productive society.” In addition to Conversational English classes, Ramirez also teaches several levels of computer classes in Spanish at the Center.
they have the Certificates of Achievement to prove it. They were the first class to graduate from the Conversational English classes that have been offered at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center for the past year. They received certificates for completing all seven levels of classes and mastering basic English skills. Most of the students in the class are seniors, who were always interested in learning English, but did not have the time to study. Some of the others need to learn English to find a job or to communicate with their children, who learn it school. “The students have lots of energy and a strong desire to learn,” said Instructor Jose Ramirez. “This is just the beginning for them. Their goal is to be totally fluent in English.” Each level of instruction is offered in six weeks sessions (24 hours per session) and there are seven levels required to receive a Basic Conversational English certificate, with a total of 168 course hours completed. In Level 1, beginners learn how to think, listen and eventually speak in English. They practice communicating in English Photo: Students from the City of Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Community in a variety of social and professional Center Conversational English class proudly hold their Certificates of Achievement.

Serendipity Features the Work of Resident Artists at Studio 18 By Debby Teich
T
hrough September 28, nine resident art-
ists will be featured in the Serendipity art exhibit at Studio 18 in the Pines. The artists include: Michael D. Harris, Dawn V., Debra Kasovitz, Jonathan Brender, Jacklyn Laflamme, John Antczak, Tom De Vita, Ruben Ubiera and Ana Aguerreverre. The public is invited to learn more about the creative process of the artists at a Studio Salon, on September 7, from 7 to 9 pm. Michael D. Harris’ work explores the Everglades’ waterways in three dimensions using laminated plywood as his medium. While finding the Everglades as inspiration for the last two years, his work in the Serendipity show has expanded its reach to include waterways from other parts of Florida. Portrait artist Dawn V. has created a series of famous actors in the roles that made them icons. From Breakfast at Tiffany’s to Harry Potter, each graphite portrait is a tribute to these wonderful movies and the actors who made them. Debra Kasovitz is interested in what persists, what is lost, and what can be recovered and made uniquely beautiful again. Her new work for the Serendipity show is inspired by domestic artifacts, such as wallpaper from the 1800s that repeat images of imagined faraway lands. Each of Jonathan Brender’s paintings is handmade (no software or printers). Each piece is one of a kind, containing
tens of thousands of different color oil points per each square meter, with some canvas measuring up to four square meters. Jacklyn Laflamme held a series of workshops to inspire children to realize their artistic voices. With the help of the children, she also created a photo project and video as part of the final exhibition. Her original artwork is displayed alongside the original artwork created by children. John Antczak has been working with clay for the last seven years, creating ceramic art by hand. He is a master ceramic artist who uses hand building techniques to create unbelievable sculptures.
The artwork of nine resident artists is featured in the Serendipity art exhibit at Studio 18 in the Pines.
Studio 18 in The Pines is located at 1101 Poinciana Drive, in Pembroke Pines. For information, visit www.ppines.com/ studio18, send an email to rvegas@ ppines.com or call 954-961-6067.

ipoabdominoplasty is an advanced technique,
which is bringing significant change to the traditional tummy tuck. The procedure involves a combination of traditional liposuction with an open skin and fat removal procedure, typically referred to as a tummy tuck. The combination of the two procedures enables the plastic surgeon to better contour and shape the abdomen and the adjacent areas more completely. Patients who have experienced increased skin laxity and excess fat deposition in the abdomen, hips, and waist can now transform their bodies into a more beautiful shape. This procedure is ideal for patients who have excess skin and fat with abdominal weakness, commonly seen after childbirth, weight loss, and with the alterations that are seen with the aging process. Lipoabdominoplasty safely combines suction-assisted lipectomy (liposuction) with abdominal muscle tightening and skin removal. The fat which is removed via lipoaspiration can be added to other areas of contour deficiency like the buttocks through fat grafting or transfer. This combination reshapes the entire midsection and buttock giving the individual the shapely body contour they desire. The technique should be used with caution in patients who have a history of smoking or previous abdominal surgery and should be performed only by experienced surgeons who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. There are a number of important variables that determine whether a patient is a candidate for a lipoabdominoplasty. For any plastic surgical procedure to be a complete success, medical and psychological fitness for surgery is a prereqActual patient — before and after uisite. The appropriate patient typically is close to their ideal body weight with anatomic features that may be improved surgically, including loose skin, excess fat, and weakened abdominal muscles. The distribution of fat is one determinant of the improvement a patient will have from a tummy tuck. Fat in the superficial tissue is the type that is possible to pinch. This superficial fat may be removed through excision (tummy tuck) or aspiration (liposuction). If skin laxity or looseness is significant, the skin and fat should be removed with a tummy tuck. If the skin elasticity is adequate; however, the superficial fat may be removed through liposuction alone. Liposuction may flatten the abdomen, but it will not tighten the skin significantly. Patients who have soft, distended abdomens frequently have lax muscles or a separation of rectus muscle in the midline known as diastasis. This is common after multiple pregnancies making it a great procedure for ‘Mommy Makeovers’ or significant weight loss patients. When patients have excess skin that extends to the lateral hips and lower back or buttocks, an extended or circumferential abdominoplasty may be necessary. For most patients the resultant incision is well hidden within underwear and bathing suit lines. The procedure usually takes 2 – 3 hours. Patients should prepare to rest for a minimum of one to two weeks after their procedure. Dr. Messa is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and also maintains a Black Diamond level with Allergan. As a Black Diamond Level Account, Dr. Messa is in the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Heel Pain (Plantar Fasciitis) By Michael A. Rivera DPM, FACFAS
H
eel pain is most often caused by plantar fas-
ciitis, a condition that is sometimes also called heel spur syndrome when a spur is present. Heel pain may also be due to other causes, such as a stress fracture, tendonitis, arthritis, nerve irritation, or, rarely, a cyst. Because there are several potential causes, it is important to have heel pain properly diagnosed. A foot and ankle surgeon is able to distinguish between all the possibilities and determine the underlying source of your heel pain. What Is Plantar Fasciitis?- Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the band of tissue (the plantar fascia) that extends from the heel to the toes. In this condition, the fascia first becomes irritated and then inflamed, resulting in heel pain. Causes- The most common cause of plantar fasciitis relates to faulty structure of the foot. For example, people who have problems with their arches, either overly flat feet or high-arched feet, are more prone to developing plantar fasciitis. Wearing non-supportive footwear on hard, flat surfaces puts abnormal strain on the plantar fascia and can also lead to plantar fasciitis. This is particularly evident when one’s job requires long hours on the feet. Obesity may also contribute to plantar fasciitis. Symptoms- The symptoms of plantar fasciitis are: ▸ Pain on the bottom of the heel ▸ Pain in the arch of the foot ▸ Pain that is usually worse upon arising ▸ Pain that increases over a period of months People with plantar fasciitis often describe the pain as worse when they get up in the morning or after they’ve been sitting for long periods of time. After a few minutes of walking the pain decreases, because walking stretches the fascia. For some people the pain subsides but returns after spending long periods of time on their feet. Diagnosis- To arrive at a diagnosis, the foot and ankle surgeon will obtain your medical history and examine your foot. Throughout this process the surgeon rules out all the possible causes for your heel pain other than plantar fasciitis. In addition, diagnostic imaging studies such as x-rays or other imaging modalities may be used to distinguish the different types of heel pain. Sometimes heel spurs are found in patients with plantar fasciitis, but these are rarely a source of pain. When they are present, the condition may be diagnosed as plantar fasciitis/heel spur syndrome. Non-Surgical Treatment- Treatment of plantar fasciitis begins with first-line strategies, which you can begin at home: ▸▸ Stretching exercises ▸ Avoid going barefoot. ▸▸ Use ice on your heal. ▸ Limit activities. ▸▸ Wear supportive shoes. ▸ Take medication. If you still have pain after several weeks, see your foot and ankle surgeon, who may add one or more of these treatment approaches: ▸ Padding and strapping ▸ Orthotic devices ▸ Injection therapy ▸ Removable walking cast ▸ Night splint ▸ Physical therapy When Is Surgery Needed?- Although most patients with plantar fasciitis respond to non-surgical treatment, a small percentage of patients may require surgery. If, after several months of non-surgical treatment, you continue to have heel pain, surgery will be considered. Your foot and ankle surgeon will discuss the surgical options with you and determine which approach would be most beneficial for you. Long-term Care - No matter what kind of treatment you undergo for plantar fasciitis, the underlying causes that led to this condition may remain. Therefore, you will need to continue with preventive measures. Wearing supportive shoes, stretching, and using custom orthotic devices are the mainstay of long-term treatment for plantar fasciitis. The Florida Foot @ Ankle Associates, LLC is located at the Memorial Hospital West Professional Bldg., 601 N. Flamingo Rd. Suite 414, in Pembroke Pines. Dr. Michael A. Rivera has been a South Florida foot and ankle surgeon for past 18 years. For more information on heel pain in children or adults, call 954-888-1444.

Pembroke Pines Update by Pembroke PInes Mayor Frank C. Ortis
I
am excited about the new construction in process
at City Center. Mill Creek “Modera” is building a beautiful complex consisting of garden apartments and town homes. This is a gated community that will have an egress and ingress over the canal on the eastern side to Palm Avenue. There are approximately 600 jobs connected with this property, which are core construction jobs rather than the ancillary feeder jobs. This is vital to our community and will help move our
economy forward. We are also in the process of looking at constructing a City Hall on the top of the new Civic Center, a unique concept and surely one that will save us money. Then, we will look at selling our valuable current city hall property.

The site is located in the heart of Pembroke Pines at the intersection of Pines Blvd and Palm Ave. The development consists of a mix of garden apartments and town homes in 3 and 4-story buildings with a mixture of direct access garages and surface parking. New Loan Modification Program for Homeowners By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
O
n June 1, 2012, new HAMP guidelines took effect that may give
financially pressed homeowners a fresh opportunity to qualify for a loan modification. HAMP stands for the Home Affordable Modification Program, a government initiative to encourage lenders to allow loan modifications with reduced mortgage payments. The new guidelines are known as HAMP Tier 2 and here is a summary of the benefits: Lower Debt-to-Income Limits The new guidelines allow borrowers to lower their monthly mortgage payment to as little as 25 percent of their gross monthly income. Previously, borrowers could not qualify for HAMP unless their total mortgage payment was more than 31 percent of their gross monthly income. Broader Debt Guidelines The new rules also take into account more types of debt in evaluating a borrower’s financial burden, such as such as second mortgages, medical bills, etc. The old guidelines focused solely on what a borrower was paying for their primary mortgage. Rental Properties Eligible One of the biggest changes is that the HAMP Tier 2 program is now open to landlords who are struggling to keep up with mortgage payments on rental properties. Properties need not be occupied to qualify, and a single borrower can qualify to obtain loan modifications on up to three properties under the program. Repeat Modifications Allowed It used to be that you only had one shot at a HAMP loan modification. If you couldn’t keep up with your payments, you could not reapply for a new modification. Under the new Tier 2 guidelines, borrowers who defaulted on a permanent or trial HAMP loan modification can apply for a new one, provided they’ve been out of the program for at least 12 months. Minimum 10 Percent Reduction Under the new rules, all loan modifications performed under HAMP must reduce a borrower’s monthly mortgage payments by at least 10 percent. Principal Reductions Encouraged New incentives are being provided to encourage lenders to allow principal reductions on mortgages where borrowers owe more than the home is worth. Navigating through the murky waters of this new HAMP Tier 2 program is frustrating, and even riskier when there is a pending mortgage foreclosure which could result in the loss of your home prior to completing the loan modification. If you would like an attorney from the Arcia Law Firm to review your case in detail to determine the best course of action, including a modification under the new HAMP Tier 2 guidelines, please call 1-800-770-7102 or visit us online at www.arcialawfirm.com to schedule your FREE initial consultation. The Arcia Law Firm recently released a consumer DVD entitled “Fight For Your Home,” which is available for purchase at www.arcialawfirm.com. Anyone that schedules a consultation with The Arcia Law Firm, will receive a FREE copy of this DVD during the appointment. The Arcia Law Firm has represented hundreds of homeowners in our community in foreclosure defense and bankruptcy protection matters over the last 15 years. Is Your Home Really Protected?
Legally Speaking CN
The Toughest Decision By Evan Baron
I
have been practicing law for over 33 years. I real-
ized many years ago that allowing a judge or jury to make a decision in a case is always a last resort. Cases that ultimately proceed to trial involve either issues that cannot be compromised or individuals who can be unreasonable in their expectations. If you proceed to trial, your ability to control your destiny is severely compromised. You are allowing a third party to dictate the terms and conditions of your future. I can assure you that Judges much prefer to approve a settlement reached by the parties than to decide the fate of individuals. Judges often tell the respective parties that they will always be better off deciding the case between themselves, rather that have he/she decide some of these issues. They are further informed that a judge’s job is to be fair and equitable, which means that after the trial is over both parties usually leave the courthouse unhappy, neither obtaining what they were seeking. that is not always true. There are obviously times when parties’ expectations are within reason and the results obtained at trial are satisfactory. So how do you know when you should settle versus the alternative of going to trial? That is sometimes a very difficult question to answer. A lawyer can never guarantee results. A lawyer can advise a client about the law as it applies to the facts of his/her case. Often times judges have a great deal of discretion in their decision making, which makes any kind of prediction that much more difficult. Lawyers also assume that a judge will interpret the law as the lawyer interprets it. That is not always the case. When offers or counter-offers are unreasonable and one-sided, it is somewhat easy to make a decision. If you have nothing to lose by going to trial, and your worst result in court is still better than the offer being made, it is an easy decision. The cases which present the more difficult decisions are the ones which result in offers which are perhaps fair but not quite what a person may envision as their end result. Perhaps the time sharing schedule with the minor children is not quite what was envisioned or the alimony amount is more than you expected to pay. Do you compromise or litigate? There is no easy answer. Each case needs to be looked at independently. A party must consider all possibilities. Cost and time are two important factors. A case which proceeds to trial will always take longer to conclude. The cost will always be greater. I suggest hiring an experienced trial attorney who can assist you in deciding the best way to conclude your case. There really is no substitute for experience. If you have any questions, contact my office for a free consultation at 954-385-9160.

Pines West Chiropractic Helps Patients Achieve a Healthy, Pain-Free Life By Debby Teich
A
for life. Just like your teeth need lifetime maintenance for good health and function, so does your spine. This helps to ensure that your spine and nervous system continue to function optimally for a lifetime.
re you suffering from headaches?
Have you been in a car accident? Do you have neck or back pain? Is a sports injury bothering you? Do you want to lead a happier and healthier life? The staff at Pines West Chiropractic has helped thousands of patients relieve pain, achieve lifelong good health, and improve their quality of life through a variety of physical, mental and spiritual strategies.
Dr. Joseph M Buckley answered some commonly asked questions about his practice.
What sets your practice apart from your competition? We love what we do!
Dr. Buckley
What are some of the main reasons people visit a chiropractor? Initially, many patients visit a chiropractor because they are experiencing lower back pain, headaches, neck pain, and other pains.
Is pain relief the only benefit of chiropractic care? No. The central
nervous system controls all other systems (immune, digestive, muscular, etc.). We help your brain’s healing energy flow clearly down though your spine, through your nerves, and back to your brain again. This allows your central nervous system to function optimally, so your entire body functions properly. This will give you improved energy and posture, as well as better sports and job performance. When the nerves and spine are less irritated, patients are happier and have better relationships.
What are the three main phases of chiropractic care? The three main phases of chiropractic care are pain relief, spinal correction and spinal maintenance.
Describe the pain relief phase.
Treatment visits are very frequent during the pain relief phase to quickly decrease inflammation and get you out of crisis as soon as possible.
Describe the spinal correction phase. The spinal correction phase
works on subluxations/postural distortions. Spinal bones shift out of place and put stress on your spine-nerves and discs. This can occur suddenly, from a car accident, or over time, from bad ergonomics. Subluxations/ postural distortions dangerously slow down the flow of healing energy that your brain sends down through your spinal cord through your nerves to all of your cells and organs, which depend on this vital life energy to stay alive and healthy. The solution is adjustments. We use our hands to re-align your spine. We also teach you spinal rehabilitation exercises and share proper ergonomic strategies (i.e. proper sleeping, sitting, computer use and flexibility improving exercises).
Describe the spinal maintenance phase. Spinal maintenance is the most important phase. It usually requires patients to visit twice a month
Dr. Buckley with a patient who received great results Our staff is experienced, after complaining about low back pain and headaches. knowledgeable, friendly and caring. By focusing on spinal correction, we help our patients relieve pain, achieve lifelong good health, and improve their quality of life. Dr. Martinez, Dr. Harkins and I have over 65 years of combined experience. There is no substitute for experience! We have been serving the Pembroke Pines community for over 15 years.
How can you help car accident victims? We have helped hundreds
recover from car accident injuries. We offer ongoing educational seminars to teach patients how to get pain relief and long lasting spinal correction. We have massage therapists that help with muscular spasms and increase circulation. We send patients for appropriate MRI’s and other diagnostic tests. We also have a good referral network for orthopedists, neurologists and other medical specialists.
Do you offer occupational injury prevention programs? Yes. I am
a certified back injury specialist and certified stress-free sitting specialist. I have consulted for many companies UPS, Wal-Mart, FPL, and Sysco to name a few. If your company wants a motivating and entertaining presentation to prevent injuries and improve job performance, contact my office.
Do you offer nutritional counseling? Yes Describe your facility. We use state-of-the-art chiropractic equipment
and digital x-rays. The office is clean and professional to promote healing.
What do you offer in addition to chiropractic services? We have male/
female massage therapists available six days a week. We also sell nutritional supplements. We also offer several free seminars, including Nutrition, The Good the Bad and the Very Ugly, Reversing Anxiety and Depression Naturally, and Blast Your Fat away in 24 Minutes a Week.
