The Season to Say Thanks!

E

very year around this time we take a deep

breath and wonder where the time went. The summer heat is receding, the vacation memories have moved to the back of our minds, and the kids have settled back into their school routine. As the Halloween sugar rush wears off, we now move into full preparation mode for the Thanksgiving holiday. What? Thanksgiving already? In the blink of an eye, the entire year seems to have gone by. Another year of family, friends and togetherness, of being there for each other and enjoying each other’s companionship. While we sit down this year with our loved ones from near and far to indulge in a fancy turkey feast, let us give thanks for all the little blessings we have received throughout the year and let us enjoy one and other.

Volunteers Needed for Special Olympics Flag Football Program By Debby Teich

T

he City of Pembroke Pines Special Populations’ Unified Special

Olympics Flag Football program is full and now organizers are looking for “unified partners,” ages 16 and older, to volunteer to help. This is the first time that the program has been offered to the community. The Unified Special Olympic Sports Program is a division of Special Olympics. It invites individuals without an intellectual disability or special need, to assist and compete on the team with Special Olympic athletes. Currently, all of the athletes are practicing for flag football with unified partners. Some are with siblings, who volunteered to be unified partners and play on the team alongside their brother or sister, who is a Special Olympics Athlete. “It is fantastic to see siblings practice together and work as a unified team,” said Mary Wilson Palacios, Special Populations Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. There is one Senior’s division team, for ages 16 to 22, and one Master’s division team, for ages 23 and older. The Special Olympics Flag Football teams are coed and no prior experience playing flag football is required for unified partners. Practice is held on Sundays, from 4 - 5:30pm on November 4, 18, and 25, at Chapel Trail Park, 19351 Taft Street, on Field #3. The State Games will be held on December 8 (the location is TBA). Volunteers will receive service hours

for their help with flag football. In addition, the City of Pembroke Pines Special Population Programs needs volunteers for Special Olympics Basketball, Special Olympics Soccer and Challenger Little Leag ue Members of the City of Pembroke Pines Special Baseball and the Populations Unified Partners Flag Football. winter, spring and/or summer camps. New Coaches Join TAG USA Gymnastics

T

AG USA Gymnastics is proud to announce the addition of two of the nation’s top coaches at the Girls Optional Level to the TAG USA program. Beth Ann Hair and Jeffrey Lewis have joined TAG USA with a commitment to help develop the area’s only Upper Level through Elite gymnastics program.

Owners Marissa and Michael Zoldan’s goal for TAG USA Gymnastics is to become the leader in Optional and Elite level gymnastics training for the South Florida area. With the addition of the new coaches, TAG USA establishes the TAG USA Elite Training Program and the TAG USA College Scholarship Program. Most owners of gymnastic facility are reluctant to hire elite experienced coaches or invest time, effort and gym money in training high level gymnasts. However, there are many gymnasts in South Florida, who have the capacity to reach levels 8 through 10, but are held back by the lack of proper high level training. These improperly trained gymnasts will eventually lose the chance to compete on a National Level or obtain a college scholarship. Some local gyms claim success when one of their athletes become part of a college team at a Division 3 school. The TAG USA Elite Training and College Scholarship Programs will have the high level and elite coaches to allow local athletes to have a chance to earn a scholarship to a Division 1 college. Coach Beth Ann Hair began coaching gymnastics in 1985 at LaFleur’s

Gymnastics in Tampa, Florida. Her most well known athlete was Olympian Dominique Moceanu, whom she trained from 1988 though 1993. Coach Beth also coached at the 1988 and 1992 Pan American Games and at five VISA National Championships. She also trained under the Elite National Staff in Houston Texas from 2004 through 2007. Marissa Zoldan states that “It is amazing that Coach Beth Ann Hair has consistently developed Level 10 athletes, National Team members, VISA National Champions and even Olympians.” Coach Jeff Lewis’s accomplishments include placing many gymnasts on the JO National Team and earning them college scholarships. Coach Lewis has qualified three gymnasts on the VISA National Championships, three to the Elite and two to the Pre-Elite National teams. he trained and mentored under the National Team staff with Bela and Marta Karolyi. Coach Beth Hair and Jeff Lewis are great additions to the TAG USA staff, which already has 6 compulsory coaches and 4 Optional coaches. The TAG USA coaches are continuing another great 2012 competition season as defending State Champions in Level 3, Level 4, and Prep-Optional. Marissa and Michael Zoldan’s children participated at another local gymnastics facility until they bought TAG USA Gymnastics in 2008. Michael believes that TAG USA’s recreational classes have evolved into the best in the region and is proud of the State Champions and accomplishments of the compulsory teams. “Now we can raise the goals for South Florida gymnasts and get more athletes onto the National teams and into Division 1 scholarships”.

37th Annual Broward County Fair is Bigger and Better By Debby Teich

T

he Broward County Fair has become

a South Florida tradition. Many, like Rachel Lohan of Pembroke Pines, wait all year for the event. The 14-year-old has been attending the fair with her friends for as long as she can remember. “It is always amazing,” said Rachel. “I am so excited to ride the roller coasters and eat all of the yummy food.” The 11-day Fair opens at 4pm on November 15 ($40 online carload deal) and runs through November 25. It is located on 115 acres at the Pembroke Pines City Center, 10300 Pines Blvd. Founded in 1976, the Broward County Fair is a not-for-profit organization that represents and presents the cultural and agriculture life of Broward County and its residents. This year, the midway, by Dreamland Amusements and Wade Shows, will illuminate the sky with hundreds of rides, games, food vendors, ground attractions and traditional favorites. Visitors can indulge in all of the traditional fair foods, in addition to some unusual selections like funnel cake sundaes and deep-fried Oreos. The midway will feature mechanical rides, including a Kiddieland and several stateof-the-art, thrill rides that are making a rare appearance in Broward County. Students from all over South Florida will exhibit their talents in the performing and visual arts pavilion. There are over 30 contest and stage competitions, such as art and science contests, creative writing, a Spelling Bee, cheerleading and talent competitions, as well

as the Miss Broward County Fair Pageant. There will also be free concerts, cultural performances and other special events. The popular agriculture and live stock area will offer a chance to see pigs, cows, rabbits, cavies (guinea pigs) and chickens. Visitors can also take a camel ride, watch a wolf show; visit the petting zoo and more. Broward school children will showcase their academic efforts and talents through a variety of educational exhibits and agriculture contests, including 4-H competitions. There will also be several wild animal exhibits from around the globe. The new Exotic Bengal Tiger Experience is an inspirational and educational program which highlights the loss of the tiger’s habitat, as well as endangerment issues in India and Asia. Also new this year is the only traveling Australian Animal Show in the United States. Fair guests will learn many interesting facts about the different species of kangaroos, wallabies, and native Australian birds, such as the kookaburra and rainbow lorikeets. They will even have an opportunity to touch, hold and feed some of the animals. For information on activities and special events, student involvement opportunities, to sign-up for events and competitions, or for advanced tickets visit www.browardcountyfair.com or call 954-922-2224.

has been selected as president-elect of the Florida League of Mayors for the 2012-13 term. He is now in line to become president of the organization after the term of newly installed President Gow Fields, Mayor of Lakeland. The Florida League of Mayors was founded and developed by mayors. The organization provides the mayors of Florida with the ability to explore, in great depth, areas of mutual concern and opportunity. Only mayors are eligible for membership. “Mayors work every day to help their citizens address the most pressing concerns within their communities,” said Mayor Ortis. “People turn to their mayor when they need help. It is a tremendous honor to be selected for a leadership role in an organization whose members guide governments closest to the people of Florida.” Ortis is a 35-year resident of Pembroke Pines and has a long history of service to his community. PAL Boxers Are Ready to Fight at Fundraiser By Debby Teich

A

The PAL boxing program, for beginners to advanced, meets on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 4:30 to 6:30pm. It includes approximately 30 kids, who range in age from 8 to 17. After warming up by stretching, running and jumping rope, they shadow box, work the boxing mitts with their coaches, punch the heavy bag and do a number of different cardio and non-cardio power drills. On Fridays, the kids come dressed in their boxing head gear, protectors and Olympic-style boxing gloves and spar each other under the supervision of the coaches, using “USA Boxing” style rules. “The kids work hard,” said Rob. “We are hoping to have a champion one day.” The kids in the program often have an opportunity to meet and train with visitors like Davie PAL Coach Milton Lacroix, famous trainer for former World Heavy Weight Champion Shannon Briggs of Florida. Milton has been mentoring the Pembroke Pines PAL coaches and brings his team of champion fighters with him to the gym.

mateur boxers from throughout South

Florida will display their talents at the Pembroke Pines Police Athletic League’s Annual 15 Bout Charity Amateur Boxing Event. It will be held on December 1, at 5pm, at Walter C. Young Middle School. Proceeds will benefit the Pembroke Pines PAL, a recreational and educational oriented juvenile crime prevention program that uses athletics and educational activities to create better relations between police officers and the youth in the community. The program relies on sponsorships and donations to help pay for its youth programs. During the fundraiser, the Pembroke Pines PAL boxing team will compete against 14 opponents, ages 8 to 17, from neighboring PAL’s and independent gyms. They will box three rounds and trophies will be awarded. A variety of local celebrities are expected to attend. Rob Nonies, head coach of the Pembroke Pines team, says that his team is young, but he expects them to do well. “I invite everyone to attend this exciting event,” said Rob. “We really need the funds. We do not have corporate sponsors like many other sports organizations. We do not charge much for the kids to participate. All of the boxing coaches are volunteers and very dedicated. Sometimes they even pay out of their own pockets so that boxers can travel to other events. I wish I were one of the luckier ones to win the Florida Lottery jackpot, so I could pay for everything our children so desperately need.”

The cost for the boxing event is $10 for general admission, $5 for seniors/kids 12-U, and $20 for ringside seats. VIP tables are also available for $500 ((includes tickets, food, drinks, and a plaque). The cost for the boxing program is $10 per month, in addition to the $40 annual fee to join PAL. Pembroke Pines PAL is located at 7900 Johnson St. in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954-986-5044.

Orthodontics offers comprehensive dental care for children, from age one to 18. The experienced staff works together as a team to provide state-of-the-art treatment and to educate its young clients about preventive care in a safe, fun, and kid-friendly environment. It is conveniently located at 4401 S. Flamingo Rd., Ste. 109, on the NW corner of Griffin Rd. and Flamingo Rd. The combination of pediatric dentistry and orthodontics in one practice has many benefits for its patients. The doctors are trained to evaluate each patient’s growth and can recognize abnormal development at an early stage.

The practice offers comprehensive dental care for children, from age one to 18.

When concerns arise, they can advise patients on the best time to start correcting the problems. If caught early, some problems can be corrected by doing simples exercises at home. Other problems may require orthodontic appliances. They are able to create a smooth transition between pediatric dentist and orthodontist since they already know the patients and their families. To save time, many families schedule their child’s dental cleaning and check-up along with an orthodontic appointments. Drs. Alon and Maria Grosman love children as much as they love dentistry! They live in Weston with their two children, Daniel, 4, and Ilan, 3, as well as their dogs, Pepe and Taz. Both are specialists who received additional training in the unique needs of infants, children and adolescents, including those with special health needs. Dr. Maria, board certified pediatric dentist, completed her doctorate of dental surgery (DDS) degree at Marquette

University and obtained her certificate in pediatric dentistry at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Alon Grosman, board certified orthodontist, completed his undergraduate degree at University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. He went on to Tufts University to complete his Doctorate of Medical Dentistry (DMD) degree. He also spent two years in Tufts University Department of Orthodontics earning a specialist certificate. Seniors Test Their Spanish Spelling Abilities By Debby Teich

T

he tension escalated as Pembroke

Pines seniors were asked to spell a wide range of words in Spanish. Contestants competed for one and one half hours before Felix Castro was declared the winner of the first Senior Spanish Spelling Bee, hosted by the City of Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Community Center. Pembroke Pines Director of Community Services and Housing Jay Shechter, who loves to play Scrabble, came up with the idea for a Spelling Bee. After holding the first two in English, the Spanish-speaking seniors wanted a turn. Schecter decided that the third contest would be in Spanish, in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month. When the Spelling Bee was first announced, 49 seniors signed up. In the end, only 23 of them were brave enough to participate. The seniors, who ranged in age from 60 to 74, took their seats on stage and proceeded to the microphone when their names were called. They had to spell the words using the pronunciation from the Spanish alphabet, including any special punctuation. Once they misspelled a word they were eliminated. Martha Castilleja served as Spelling Bee moderator. Everything was in Spanish, including the rules.

The contest started with easy words, such as “blusa” and “hablar.” As the contest progressed, there were harder words, such as “tridimensional” and “sinverguenza.” Only four contestants remained on stage for the final Spelling Bee words. Throughout the contest, guests in the audience whispered amongst themselves and had to be hushed when they spelled the words too loudly. Fortunately, the final three spellers did not need any help! The Spelling Bee winners were: Felix Castro, 1st Place; Olga Rodriguez, 2nd Place; and Luz Diaz, 3rd Place. Each of them received a $25 gift certificate to the Mayor’s Café and a cash prize. “Everyone had a great time and the event was a huge success,” said Suzy Felix, Activities Coordinator. Felix says that the Center will now offer two Spelling Bees each year – one in English and one in Spanish. PPTOPA Presents “Annie – The Musical” On Stage By Debby Teich

I

f you have always dreamed of

seeing a Broadway show, the Pembroke Pines Theater of the Performing Arts (PPTOPA) can give you a taste of what it is like. Through November 18, Annie – the Musical will be on stage for several performances. The whole family will enjoy Annie, winner of seven Tony Awards. In the happy-ending musical, a red-haired, orphan girl finds love and happiness with a millionaire despite the best efforts of a conniving couple who try to steal her love and her new found wealth. PPTOPA is the oldest continuously operating Community Theater in Broward County. It was founded in 1993 by a group of dedicated individuals whose goal was to provide low cost, high quality live theater for the community, as well as to provide opportunities for anyone interested in assisting in the creation of theater. The goal of the company has not changed since it opened 19 years ago. “It is community theater at its finest,” said Mina Mandel, executive vice president. “The production teams and talent are superior. It is one of the best kept cultural secrets in Pembroke Pines.” While technically an “amateur” company, PPTOPA productions routinely feature some of the finest actors and actresses in South Florida. They are teachers, attorneys, doctors, business owners and others who volunteer their time to immerse themselves in something they love. Recent casts have included performers who have headlined productions at Stage Door, Curtain Call, New Vista, Tamarac, Caldwell and Actors Theaters.

They have been on national Broadway tours, starred in Hollywood films, and written and produced their own plays. Many have been nominated and selected as recipients of South Florida’s Carbonell awards. PPTOPA presents three shows annually and many of them have attracted as many as 4,000 people. Productions have included The Producers, Secret Garden, My Fair Lady, Sound of Music and many more. With a full orchestra, as well as professional sets, backdrops and costumes, the plays are expensive to produce. Some cost as much as $60,000. The theater raises money through donations and ticket sales, which range from $10 to $21. “Many people cannot afford to see a Broadway show,” said Mandel. “We bring Broadway-quality theater to Pembroke Pines at very reasonable prices.” The next two shows are West Side Story in the spring and H.M.S Pinafore in the summer of 2013. Performances are held at the Susan B. Katz Theatre, 17195 Sheridan Street, in the River of Grass Artspark, on November 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18. The show begins at 8pm for Friday and Saturday evening performances and at 2pm for Saturday and Sunday matinees. Don’t miss Family Night (Nov. 9, 8pm), and Senior Matinee (Nov. 10, 2pm), when tickets are only $15. For information, to order tickets or to volunteer, call 954-437-4884 or visit www.pptopa.com.

PPCHS Recycling Team Makes Farmer’s Market a Little Greener By Debby Teich

A

group of students from the Pembroke Pines Charter High

School (PPCHS) Environmental Club Recycling Team were excited to visit the new Farmer’s Market, which opened just a short distance away in Miramar. Although it was filled with seasonal fruits and vegetables, gourmet prepared foods and much more, it was missing one important thing - recycling bins. The students immediately took action. “The Farmer’s Market was already a healthy, green environment,” said student Alex Rose. “Now it is a little greener.” Waste Pro donated five bins and the PPCHS students strategically positioned them around the Market. Unfortunately, the public is often unsure about which items can be recycled and which should be tossed into the trash. They started placing non-recyclable materials (plastic bags, napkins, Styrofoam, chip bags) in the bins, which contaminated the rest of the items. The students designed signs to educate the public and help eliminate any confusion. “There is so much that can be saved and reused,” said Alex. “Something so simple can make a big difference.” This is not the first time that the Recycling Team has been active in the community. Two PPCHS students Alexander Rose, Melissa Gianello and Deanna Alford are part of the years ago, they focused their efforts on West recycling team that added recycling bins Pines Soccer Park. Every year, thousands at the new Farmer’s Market in Miramar.

of soccer players and spectators visit the park and bring a variety of drinks in plastic and aluminum containers. Before the students arrived, the park only had one recycling bin and it was difficult to find. Now there are 16 donated recycling bins scattered throughout the park, as well as creative signage to help educate the public. The Recycling Team is hoping to initiate a similar effort at the Miramar Regional Park. Memorial Hospital Miramar, in partnership with the City of Miramar, The Farmer’s Market has more than 50 venders. launched the Farmer’s Market in September to bring healthy eating to the community. It is open every Sunday, from 9am to 2:30pm, on the Memorial Hospital Miramar campus, 1901 SW 172nd Avenue. With more than 50 vendors, it features just-picked locally grown fruits and vegetables, fresh baked artisan breads, hot brewed organic coffee, chilly fruit smoothies, fresh herbs and flowers, gourmet sauces, hand-made organic soy candles and soaps, vegetarian and gluten free products, and much more. Visitors can also get helpful tips at interactive cooking shows, health and fitness demonstrations and gardening workshops. For information on PPCHS, visit www.pinescharter.net. SKIN. Your Largest Organ. Protect it. Don’t neglect it.

S

kin cancer is on the rise in epidemic proportions. As patients are becoming more aware of the dangers of skin cancer, we as dermatologists are diagnosing these cancers more frequently. Every race, every age is at risk. The three most common types of skin cancer in order of frequency include: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Basal cell and squamous cell usually present as pink/red, rough of scaly lesions that are not healing in usual sun exposed areas. Melanomas can have a number of colors, brown, black, blue, red and even white anywhere on the body. It is extremely important to check our skin for any of these types of lesions. Any changes in growth, healing, and/or symptoms such as pain, bleeding or itching should alert the patient to seek evaluation. Each patient should have an annual skin exam by a board certified dermatologist.

Are you curious about non-invasive, no downtime cellulite reduction or skin therapy treatments for the face OR body? Ask us about our new state of the art Reaction™! Basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma are standardly diagnosed with a skin biopsy and are cured by surgical removal. The most comprehensive and secure way to remove them on cosmetically important areas, such as the head and neck, is Mohs Micrographic Surgery. This procedure was pioneered by renowned dermatologist, Fredrerick Mohs and has evolved into the gold standard for skin cancer removal. It is done by dermatologists especially trained in this important procedure. We have performed thousands of these procedures over years and we continue to service our community. Melanomas are removed surgically if diagnosed early and survival rates are close to 100%. If detected late, and the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, survival rates decrease dramatically. There are numerous chemotherapy protocols that are used for lesions that have spread depending on the patient’s individual case. Remember, the most important service you can do for your skin with regards to cancer is prevention. Aside from your regular dermatological exam, daily sunscreen use is vital. Use it frequently and plentiful. It is by far the greatest single tool you can use to help your skin. The added benefit is wrinkle prevention as 90% of a person’s wrinkles are caused from UV exposure.

Pembroke Pines Charter Students Take on the Trash By Debby Teich

S

tudents from several of the City of Pembroke Pines Charter

School campuses recently spent the day at Hollywood Beach. Instead of swimming in the ocean and playing in the sand, they spent time picking up trash. They participated in Ocean Conservancy’s 27th Annual International Coastal Cleanup, the world’s largest volunteer effort for ocean health. They did their part to create clean beaches for everyone to enjoy, cleaner water for fish and marine wildlife, and a healthier ocean for those whose lives depend on it. The PPCMS – Central Campus Builders Club is a regular participant in the Coastal Cleanup. Seven members of club, along with their families, scoured two miles of beach in search of trash. They collected over 600 pieces of plastic, fishing line, diapers, clothing, soda cans and other items for a total of 21 pounds of trash. “The items our students collected could have sickened, injured or even killed marine mammals, sea turtles, seabirds, and other animals,” said Piper Spencer, Science Department Head at the PPCMS Central Campus. “The students now have a better understanding of how quickly a few Students from the PPCHS Key Club. pieces of trash can add

up. Hopefully, this will prevent them from littering in the future.” This is the 8th year that students from the PPCES – East Campus Beach Patrol have attended the event. Approximately 65 students and their families collected over 300 pounds of trash and debris. One family collected 100 pounds alone! “The experience was fun, educational, and most of all Students from the PPCMS – Central rewarding,” said Lisa Dizengoff, 5th Campus Builders Club. grade science teacher. The PPCHS Key Club has also participated in the event for several years. This year, 124 students picked up a variety of items, which ranged from small pieces of plastic from bottle caps to rusty old beach chairs that were left behind. “Giving back to the community is what Key Club International is all about,” said Claudia Cueto, Pembroke Pines Charter’s Key Club Editor. “Seeing all the litter and how careless some people are was a complete eye-opener to many students. Our community thrives off of those who are willing to step in and make a change, thus building character in the students who participate.”

Ask the Expert

Which Filler Is Right For You? By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

F

or patients who are concerned about the

appearance of facial lines and wrinkles, non-surgical injections of soft tissue fillers can dramatically enhance your appearance. Of the myriad of available “injectables”, which one is best for you? The commonly used soft tissue filler substances injected into the skin to reduce the size or depth of facial wrinkles are Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane, Radiesse and Sculptra. Restylane, Juvederm and Perlane are hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. HA is a natural sugar compound found in all living organisms that provides volume and fullness to the skin. When injected, the HA molecules draw in water and cause the tissue underneath to swell. The distention that occurs in the dermis stimulates your body to produce some of its own collagen, further reducing the presence of the facial line. These substances are made of a biodegradable non-animal HA and, unlike collagen, pose no risk of allergic reaction or being rejected by the body. Radiesse is composed of tiny crystals containing calcium hydroxyapatite, a substance found in bone and teeth. It is also manufactured synthetically so there is no risk of having an allergic reaction and no need for skin testing. What these both have in common is recovery and downtime. You may experience mild bruising, swelling or redness at the site of the injection. Most patients resume normal activities immediately following the procedure. Restylane is ideally suited for the nasolabial folds (from the nose to above the lips), smile lines, hollows beneath the eyes, and sculpting/plumping the lips. Individual results vary, but six months is typical for the results to last. Perlane is a larger particle filler and because of its structure, should be injected deeper into areas like the cheeks and deeper folds around the mouth and chin. It lasts longer than Restylane, up to 9 to 12 months. An area that doesn’t move as much, like the cheeks, the filler will last longer than one that’s in constant motion, like the marionette lines (those that run from the corner of the mouth down to your chin). This product works well on medium to severe wrinkles, the lips and tear trough areas, and in many patients may last up to one year. Both Restylane and Juvederm are now available with the local anesthetic, lidocaine, allowing the filler to be injected with minimal discomfort. Radiesse, because of its composition containing hydroxyapatite crystals increases a process called collagenesis – stimulating your body to produce new collagen in the area where it is injected. This product is usually injected into smile and marionette lines, the pre-jowl sulcus and cheekbone area, adding volume to these areas. Because of the thickness of Radiesse, it should not be used in the lips or areas of superficial lines as it may leave lumps. If a patient feels the HA fillers don’t last, or in patients with very deep folds, Radiesse may be an excellent alternative. Sculptra is an implant of Poly-L-Lactic acid (PLLA) microparticles. It is indicated for shallow to deep facial lines and contour deficiencies on the face. The area is filled with PLLA beads. As these beads break down, the body produces collagen where the Sculptra was injected. A typical treatment regimen consists of one to four injection sessions approximately three weeks apart injected deeply. The results with Sculptra are dependent on each individual’s soft tissue response to the PLLA. Some patients can see long-lasting results up to two years. Usually a small amount of Sculptra should be injected initially to assess the patient’s inflammatory response to avoid excess redness or swelling. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Society of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and consultant for Allergan Medical and has achieved Black Diamond Level as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. In our conversation, he indicated that the reason he had not yet decided to file for divorce is because he was waiting for the “right time.” I explained that in my experience there probably is never a “right time,” but a person should want to avoid the wrong time. A person’s initial consultation with my office is free. This often means that an individual may be considering a dissolution, but he/she is not ready to truly begin the process. That “first step,” that decision to actually begin a court proceeding, is sometimes the most difficult of all decisions to be made. It means that the thought of obtaining a divorce is slowly becoming a reality. Some people who come to see me have already decided that they are ready to move forward. Perhaps they have been interviewing other attorneys and are now somewhat familiar with the process. Perhaps they have attempted to mediate the case but have been unsuccessful. They may have already had their decision made for them by their spouse, who has filed for a dissolution already.

The majority of the people I see are generally not ready to take that first step at the initial consultation. I truly understand a person’s hesitancy to jump right into the situation. At the consultation I provide them with a great deal of information, which usually takes some time to digest. I never encourage an individual to begin the process unless they are sure there is truly no other solution. Some people think about it for days. Some people think about it for weeks or months. Some people think about it for years. I was recently contacted by two individuals, one who met with me a year ago; and one almost two years ago. Each needed to wait until they found that elusive “right time.” There is usually no harm in waiting, other than the reality that a person may continue to live in an unhappy situation. Of course, waiting can at times result in a changing financial situation in the household. It will also result in additional years of marriage, which could affect a possible award of alimony. The only time I will never recommend waiting is if there is domestic violence in the household. That situation must be addressed immediately. Everyone who is moving forward with a divorce has their own individual “right time” to begin. I just tell people that when that time arrives, they will know it. If you have any questions, contact my office for a free consultation at 954-385-9160.

are with families in our community who continue to do the best they can in this adverse economy. Our thoughts are also with our returning military men and women who are rejoining their families and their communities at a time of difficult economic realities. In the City of Pembroke Pines, we are a community. We always pull through, because of the dedication and concern that people show to one another. I wanted to write this article about the American Cancer Society and the Relay for Life to be held on March 1-2, 2013, at Walter C. Young Middle School in Pembroke Pines. WPLG Channel 10 news anchor Kristi Kruger will chair the event and I am honorary co-chair. This year’s Relay for Life is so important for cancer survivors. The planned weekend of Relay for Life activities has teams that come together to raise money to help eradicate this terrible disease.

The City of Pembroke Pines used to be number one in past Relay for Life fundraiser efforts, but dropped in recent times because of inclement weather and other obstacles. My team is called The Mayor’s Gang. Many city employees - firefighters, police, teachers and general employees – will participate to raise money to support cancer research and help cancer survivors. The City of Pembroke Pines and the American Cancer Society want to invite all residents to this 18-hour event to help find a cure for cancer. This overnight event features many activities honoring and supporting those who have had cancer. Activities include the Survivor Dinner, Survivor Walk, Luminaria Ceremony and team activities throughout the event. For our March 2013 event, I am hoping that many more people in the community will participate by joining in the activities that will take place at Walter C. Young Middle School, 901 NW 129th Avenue in Pembroke Pines, March 1 – March 2. Or you can go online to donate to this worthy cause through Relay for Life of Pembroke Pines at relay. acsevents.org and search for team “Mayor’s Gang,” where you can enter your donation. If you have questions about the event and how to participate or donate, call our Special Events Coordinator Francie Novo at 954-435-6525 or email her at fnovo@ppines.com. We desperately need your help. If each resident donated $5 to this very worthy cause, Pembroke Pines would easily be #1 again in the fight against cancer. As we approach the holiday season, I would like to wish everyone the best in health. May you all have a wonderful holiday season, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and a prosperous and Happy New Year. As always, if you have general questions, concerns or comments, you can call my office at 954-435-6505 or email me at fortis@ppines.com.

Your Home’s Value and Property Insurance By Matthew J. Chrupcala, CPCU, CRM, AAI, CWCC

W

hile it may seem like a viable option to lower

your property insurance coverage to save some money, this may end up costing you much more money in the long run. If your policy limits are too low, the cost to fix your home may exceed your limits, even if your home’s market value has decreased.

Property Insurance Considerations Though housing prices are declining, home repair costs are escalating. According to the Los Angeles Times, it may cost as much as 30 percent more to rebuild parts of a home as compared to completely building a new one from scratch. Rebuilding is often more expensive because demolition and removal of damaged property are expensive.

Workers must also work around your existing landscape, power lines and other structures. This can make rebuilding difficult and limiting. Limits on your Homeowners Insurance are established to protect your family in the event of an accidental loss (fire, destruction to your property due to weather, etc.). In an effort to remain protected and save money, consider the following savings tips: ▸▸ Avoid filing nuisance claims. Use your coverage to protect against losses that you cannot recover by yourself and take care of minor incidents on your own. ▸▸ Consider having your home appraised by a certified and licensed appraiser for its reconstruction or replacement cost value. In some cases the reconstruction value or replacement cost value established by the appraiser will be less than the value assigned to you by the insurance company. The appraisal will give you peace of mind that your largest asset is properly insured and you could save premium dollars. ▸▸ Notify your insurance company and insurance agent when you renovate your home. The additional investment you made in your home needs to be taken into consideration to ensure the proper insurance value. ▸▸ Consider upgrading your home to include wind and rain protective devises and material to mitigate the effect of wind and rain damage. The mitigation upgrade will not only provide you better protection against the effects of Mother Nature but could result in significant premium discounts. ▸▸ Increase your deductible to lower your monthly premium. According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), if you increase to a $1,000 deductible, you could save as much as 25 percent or 30 percent if you increase up to a $2,500 deductible. ▸▸ Consider buying multiple lines of coverage from the same carrier to incur discounts, such as your Homeowners Insurance, Automobile Insurance, Life Insurance, etc. You can count on INEX Risk Services of Florida, LLC for all your home matters, including Homeowners and Renters Insurance. The office is located at 18501 Pines Blvd., Suite 105, in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954-251-3673 or visit www.inexinsurance.com.

Legally Speaking

Three Major Mistakes by Homeowners When it Comes to Association Dues By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

M

any homeowners that have fallen behind on their mortgage

payments also make the decision to stop paying their homeowners’ association dues. If a homeowner is trying to save their home, non payment of association dues is perhaps one of the worst decisions they can make. Homeowners can quickly find themselves defending two foreclosure actions, one from the mortgage company and one from the homeowner’s association. The following are three major mistakes by homeowners when it comes to collection of association dues. ▸  Only the mortgage company has the right to foreclose on a home. This is just not true. Florida law permits homeowners’ associations to place a lien against your property for the value of any unpaid dues or assessments, quickly foreclose, and take possession of the property to recover the value of that lien. Generally speaking, there are fewer defenses to an association action than a mortgage foreclosure action. Also, because the amount in controversy is usually less than $15,000, association foreclosure actions may be filed in the lesser backlogged county courts. This means that association foreclosure actions are completed much quicker than mortgage foreclosure cases – usually in less than 6 months. ▸  An association will not foreclose if there is no equity in the property. Just the opposite is the case. Since there is a significant mortgage ahead of the association lien, at a foreclosure auction, the association itself is usually the highest bidder and becomes the new “owner” of the property. More and more homeowners’ associations are foreclosing on South Florida homes in order to take possession of the property and rent it out to recover the unpaid dues, until and when the mortgage company forecloses. Accordingly, an association may foreclose and deprive you of your property if there is equity or not. ▸  There is no need to hire an attorney to defend an association foreclosure action. Like in a mortgage foreclosure action, there are a number of defenses to an association foreclosure action which may only be effectively developed in court by a law firm with experience and specialized knowledge on how to defend association foreclosure actions. An attorney can also help you negotiate a structured settlement of your association debt with affordable payments to avoid foreclosure. There are also bankruptcy related strategies that can be implemented to reduce or wipe out homeowners’ association debt altogether. If you have fallen behind on your association payments, or recently received an association foreclosure action, it is important that you retain a well qualified law firm, like the Arcia Law Firm, to fully represent your interests. The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to represent dozens of homeowners in our community in association foreclosure and collection actions. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy during your appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our legal team.

Dining Out

Salsa Fiesta Celebrates One Year Anniversary with New Menu Items By Debby Teich

S

ince opening a year ago, Salsa Fiesta Urban Mexican Grill in

Pembroke Pines has become the go-to dining destinations for fresh, affordable Mexican cuisine. The menu includes an assortment of dishes that are robust in flavor and range from classic tacos, burritos and fajitas to salads, soups, specialty dishes and combination platters. Patrons can mix different items from the menu or build their own dishes customized to their personal tastes. To celebrate its one year anniversary, the restaurant has added a variety of tempting new items, including “tortas,” an array of homemade Mexican griddled telera bread sandwiches. In 2009, Cesar Olivo, Samuel Perez Benatar and Adriana Perez Benatar opened Salsa Fiesta in Miami and it was an instant success. All of the food is cooked to order using only fresh, high quality ingredients. The restaurant is as popular with foodies and the business crowd as it is with families or teenagers seeking a delicious meal at an unbeatable price. “The secret to our success is our commitment to customer service and never skimping on quality,” says Olivo, who is currently, along with his team, Acapulco Salad working on a third location to open in Aventura later this month. “Our guests know that everything is made in-house and that freshness, flavor and affordability are our priorities.” The restaurant boasts a vibrant, urban ambiance, replete with colorful Aztec and Mayan-inspired murals and artwork. Featuring smooth concrete walls lined with reclaimed wood and exposed ceilings, the décor expresses an industrial, loft-like setting with dynamic pops of color from tangerine chairs to planters of bright mosaic tiles. In addition, Salsa Fiesta uses eco-friendly products. The restaurant serves their dishes on organic bamboo plates which are non-toxic, melamine-free and biodegradable. In lieu of plastic forks and knives, Salsa Fiesta uses real silverware as well as reusable plastic cups which are not harmful to the environment. The dishware helps reduce waste in the environment and enhances the overall dining experience. Salsa Fiesta uses fresh vegetables from the field (Napa tomatoes, cabbage, Hass avocados, Caribbean plantains, Elote corn, tomatillo, fresh peppers) and all of the meats are marinated on the premises. The restaurant has an open kitchen, so customers can watch as the chefs peel the avocados for the infamous guacamole, the plantains for the crispy Tostones or the tomatoes for one of the Gourmet Salsas (Hot Tamale Salsa, Mango Relish, Pico de Gallo, Creamy Cilantro Salsa, Creamy Avocado Salsa, Creamy Chipotle Salsa). There are also many options for the health-conscious, including gluten-free. There are a variety of vegetarian dishes and anything on the menu can be ordered without meat. When ordering tortillas, customers can choose crispy, flour, whole wheat or lettuce wraps. They can also order white or brown rice. All of the creamy salsas are made with low fat yogurt. The new Tortas have quickly become one of the most popular items on the menu. Choose from Milanesa (crispy chicken breast, black beans, poblano rajas, pickled onions, Chihuahua cheese, chipotle cream, avocado and arugula), Choriqueso (chorizo, queso fresco a la plancha, black beans, poblano rajas, sundried Levanta Muerto tomatoes, crushed chili

Huevos Rancheros

salsa and avocados), and Pepito (steak, chipotle black beans, caramelized onions and mushrooms, Chihuahua cheese, light balsamic aioli and arugula). All Tortas are served with freshly-made tortilla chips, Salsa Fiesta’s signature Hot Tamale salsa and an arugula side salad. All of the old menu favorites still remain. Some of them include the Acapulco Salad (roasted corn, pico de gallo and guacamole served over a bed of lettuce with creamy cilantro salsa and crispy tostones), with a choice of Chicken, Beef, Carintas, Veggies, Steak or Fish. Another popular item is the Guerrero Taco Platter (three lettuce-wrapped tacos filled with onions, cilantro, mango salsa, red cabbage, creamy cilantro salsa and cheese), served with chips and pico de gallo, with a choice of Chicken, Beef, Carintas, Veggies, Steak or Fish. If you are looking for a weekend brunch that isn’t the “same old same” and won’t break the bank, come to Salsa Fiesta on Saturdays and Sundays, from 10am to 1pm. The special brunch menu is filled with appetizing Mexican brunch favorites, including Levanta Muerto (a.k.a. Salsa Fiesta’s “Hangover” Tortilla Soup), which is topped with a fried egg and Gluten-free Mexican Style Waffles (made with almond flour, dusted with Azteca cinnamon sugar, topped with fresh seasonal berries and whipped cream), which is served with organic blue agave nectar syrup and guava dipping sauce. On the libations front, guests can enjoy refreshing Mimosas (made with freshly squeezed orange juice and champagne), Margaritas and Sangria. The Happy Hour is always a favorite. It runs Monday – Friday, from 3 – 7pm. Specials include $2.50 Margaritas and Sangria; $1.99 on all draft beer; and $1.50 for imported beer bottles. Salsa Fiesta also has an extensive catering menu for a crowd of 10 to 1,000. Guests can enjoy the same great food while attending a meeting, special event, birthday party or some other function. Pick up the food or have the catering department Zocalo Torta Sandwich deliver, set up and serve. Salsa Fiesta Urban Mexican Grill is located at 14914 Pines Blvd. in the Cobblestone Plaza, on Pines Blvd., just west of I-75.It is open for lunch, dinner and brunch. ain or shine, you will have a great time

at Little Java’s Family Fun Center. Designed with both children and adults in mind, it is a place where the whole family can have fun together. It is also a perfect spot for fundraisers, play dates and field trips.

The owners of Little Java’s answered some commonly asked questions.

What is special about Little Java’s? At Little Java’s, parents can spend time with their children and friends, have a wonderful lunch, sip on some coffee, and truly enjoy a full afternoon. The facility is safe and clean, and the customer service is terrific. Our prices are also very affordable. Describe the facility. Little Java’s has over 12,000 square feet of attractions, including a rock climbing wall, ropes course, cannon ball shooter zone, toddler area, arcade, and a variety of custom made inflatables. The kids love the Safari theme. In fact, we are the only fully-themed indoor playground in South Florida. Are the kids safe at Little Java’s? We take

safety very seriously. Children and parents must wear a matching wrist band. Children are only permitted to leave the facility with the caregiver that brought them. Our facility has been inspected numerous times by a team of safety inspectors to minimize the risk of injuries. Our staff is trained in safety procedures and emergency situations.

save money by using our own staff. Every night, the cleaning crew thoroughly disinfects all of the attractions to insure a safe and clean play space for the children. Our carpets get professionally steam cleaned on a regular basis. At Little Java’s, we do not cut corners when it comes to safety and cleanliness.

What are the appropriate ages for Little Java’s? We offer activities for children of all ages, from 1 – 12 years old. For kids 3 and under, we have a dedicated toddler area and a bounce house. For the older children, there is a rock climbing wall, ropes course and arcade. We also have a cannonball shooting range that is appropriate for all ages.

Miracle League – The Sixth Annual Pembroke Pines Miracle League Baseball Season Opening Day game attracted happy players and a large crowd. The game was played on a special baseball field designed with synthetic turf, which accommodates wheelchairs and other assistive devices. The City of Pembroke Pines Parks and Recreation and the West Pembroke Pines Optimist Club worked together to make the Miracle League in Pembroke Pines a great success.

Trash to Treasure - The saying, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” held true at a fashion show of original designs that were created from repurposed and recycled materials. The fashion show kicked off the “Wrapt Attention” Exhibition at Studio 18 in Pembroke Pines, which runs through November 25. It features seven artists who use everyday objects and discarded trash to explore themes of opposition.

Future Doctor - This young student at the City of Pembroke Pines Bright Beginnings Early Childhood Education program may be headed for medical school one day. Bright Beginnings, located at the Walter C. Young Resource Center, is a recipient of the Gold Seal Award by Broward County Childcare licensing.

Arts and Crafts – Visitors looking for one-of-a-kind decorations and distinctive gifts came from all over South Florida to attend the 6th Annual Fall Arts & Crafts Show held at the City of Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Community Center.
