t is hard to believe, but winter is at our door. While we gener-

ally do not get the snow flakes or the frosty winter temperatures, we do get the holiday season. While the upcoming holidays may have different meanings for many of our readers due to their diverse cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs, for all of us it should be a time to reflect on the year gone by. It’s the season to gauge our own conduct. Have we made enough time for our children? Have we reached out to our neighbors to lend a helping hand to those in need? Have we spent time with our parents, our family and our friends? This is the time to mend minor disagreements with family, friends and neighbors; to forgive and forget. This is also the time to remember those less fortunate, to teach our children to share our good fortune with our loved ones, as well as those in need. There are families right here in our communities who need our assistance. Help make the season brighter for them by giving generously. And consider giving your children gifts they will cherish for a lifetime; the gift of love and the gift of giving. The holidays are the perfect time to teach your children to be thankful for what they have and to help others. For that is truly what the holidays are about. Have a great holiday season!

Over 5,000 people are expected to attend the free event (tickets are only required for the snow area) at the City Center, 10300 Pines Boulevard, on December 8, from 2 to 6pm. “We are fortunate to have so many businesses in the community sponsor the event,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. “We hope everyone will come out for this fun family event.” Some of the highlights include: ▸▸ At 5:45pm, the whole family can help light up City Hall with the Mayor and some of his close friends...Rudolph, Frosty and Santa. ▸▸ Play in 50 tons of snow at the North Pole or South Pole for a small fee. ▸▸ Enjoy some of Santa’s favorite meals at The Food Truck Round Ups ▸▸ At Mrs. Claus’ Kitchen, make snacks from the North Pole with ingredients like granola, M & M’s, chocolate chips and more. ▸▸ Make sure that Santa’s reindeer can find your home by creating a bag filled with oatmeal, glitter and other items. On Christmas Eve, the kids can sprinkle the magical dust on their lawn for the reindeers to see.

▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸

▸  Purchase a raffle ticket and win a giant reindeer, teddy bear and other stuffed animals. ▸  Visit Mrs. Claus’ Bling Fling Holiday Jewelry Show, which will feature hand-crafted jewelry and many beautiful choices for holiday shopping. Hundreds Attend the Pembroke Pines Veterans Day Ceremony By Debby Teich

Over 500 people attended the City of Pembroke Pines annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the Pembroke Pines City Center on November 11. The ceremony honored all who have served in the United States Military. It took place in front of the Veterans Memorial, a fifteen foot black granite obelisk surrounded by commemorative bricks. Mayor Frank C. Ortis welcomed the crowd and Pastor Peter Tokar gave the Invocation. Boy Scout Troop 451 led the Pledge of Allegiance and Joy Torres sang the National Anthem. City Commissioners and guest speaker Lieutenant Colonel D.L. Wright of the U.S. Army Southern Command addressed the guests. The Civilian Air Patrol, and Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Department Honor Guard presented the colors. Pastor Peter Tokar delivered a Benediction and closing remarks. The program featured patriotic instrumentals performed by the Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School West Campus Band and “Taps” performed by West Campus Band student Johanna Moise. Guests and Veterans enjoyed lunch, while the band performed “In Honor of the Fallen” and the theme from JAG. One of the guests was World War II Veteran S.E. “Cy” Mermelstein, who served as a member of the very first Special Service Force, now called Special Forces. “It is important that we keep true to our history and honor our military appropriately,” said Mermelstein. “The Veterans Memorial will help remind all of us who visit about the history of our great country.” The ceremony also included the unveiling of the second phase of commemorative bricks. Each one features the name of a veteran, living or deceased, the branch of the armed forces they served in, and other memorial comments, or a general message thanking our veterans for their service. The bricks create a walkway which leads to the memorial and encircles it. “We encourage members of the community to honor family members and or friends who are veterans by purchasing a commemorative brick,” said Chuck Vones, Jr., Director of Parks and Recreation and Veterans Memorial Foundation President. To purchase a brick, visit www.ppines.com and click on “Veterans Memorial Foundation.” For information about the Veterans Memorial Foundation, call 954-443-4829.

Miracle League Kicks Off Baseball Season in Pembroke Pines By Debby Teich

L

ast month, the Weston Miracle League

began its 6th baseball season in Pembroke Pines, giving South Florida children with disabilities the opportunity to play baseball. The stands were packed with proud parents and volunteers shouting words of encouragement like “great hit,” “great catch” and “you can do it.” The Weston Miracle League serves children, between the ages of 5 and 15, who have a physical or mental disability. Since baseball diamonds were not exactly designed with wheelchairs and crutches in mind, the Miracle League removes the barriers that keep children with disabilities off the baseball field. Blaz and Linda Jurko learned about the Miracle League eight years ago and immediately knew it was Miracle League player Pedro Cruz something they wanted to start in their hometown of Weston. They planned to build a special field in Weston, until they learned that one already existed nearby. “The Miracle League is about much more than the game of baseball,” said Blaz. “It is about hope, determination and a display of human spirit. It is about making new friends, building self-esteem and being treated just like other kids.” All practices and games take place Sunday afternoons, from 4 to 5pm, at Rose G. Price Park’s Miracle League Baseball Field, which is located at 901 NW 208th Avenue in Pembroke Pines. The park has a field with a special rubberized surface that makes it accessible for individuals with wheelchairs or other assistive walking devices. It is

painted green and white to create the appearance of grass and base striping. Players can join the league at any time in the season. The atmosphere at the games is very low key and every player leaves a winner. Parents have an opportunity to take a break and relax, while their kids have fun on the field. Some of the players are focused on the game, and others simply want to play catch on the sideline. Every player bats once each inning, remains safe on the bases, and scores a run before the inning is over. “No matter what challenges they face, all of the kids have an opportunity to score,” said Blaz. “For many of the kids, it is the highlight of their week.” To help the athletes, the Miracle League uses a “buddy” system – pairing each player with an able-bodied peer. The result is a bond that cannot be described. The volunteers attend a variety of middle and high schools throughout Broward County and earn service hours for their work. “The Miracle League is so rewarding,” said high school sophomore A.J. Jurko, founding member and Weston Miracle League Buddy for the past 6 years. “You get to see players progress each season not only in baseball, but also in their social and communication skills.” To volunteer of sign up to play, visit www.westonmiracleleague.com, call 954-6677174 or send an email to blazjurko@yahoo.com.

TAG USA wins State Championship Two Years In A Row!

T

AG USA Gymnastics has once again been crowned Florida USAG 2012 State Champions for Level 3 Girls Gymnastics. The First Place USAG State Championship is TAG USA’s second in a row for Level 3 Gymnastics. During the 2011-12 season, TAG USA won State Championships in Level 3, Level 4, and in Prep-Optionals. The unprecedented string of State Championships has vaulted TAG USA Gymnastics into the upper echelon of the nation’s best gyms. On November 17th and 18th, Florida USAG held their State Championship Competition for Level 2 and Level 3 teams in Deerfield Beach. Over 100 participating gymnastics clubs competed in Florida’s illustrious meet. The TAG USA Level 3 Team finished with an all around score of 116.200, beating other top three Florida gyms by nearly two points. TAG USA beat perennial powerhouses like Tampa Bay Turners, Ace, and Orlando Metro by a large margin. TAG USA finished first all around in vault, beam, bars and floor. No other Broward County Gym finished in the top five.

TAG USA Level 2 Gymnastics Team

TAG USA’s gymnasts also had over 20 individual First Place State Champions with every one of their Level 3 gymnasts finishing in the top three in their age group. Even TAG USA’s smallest gymnasts, the Level 2 Team, finished their season with a third place finish in the USAG State Championships. TAG USA’s Level 2 Team is composed mostly of five and six year old girls competing in their first championship meet.

When asked about TAG USA’s amazing success, owners Marissa and Michael Zoldan explained that “success is about quality and numbers.” TAG USA hires the best coaches and doesn’t skimp on the number of coaches needed to properly train a team.” Marissa adds “The quality is TAG USA Level 3 Gymnastics Team in the outstanding and experienced coaches that have been with us and the numbers are in the many coaches that train our teams.” TAG USA, led by Head Coach Leesa van Werven, has eight coaches for the compulsory girls teams, four coaches for the optional girls, two coaches for the boys team, and two for the trampoline team. TAG USA’s investment into quality coaches has certainly paid off with State Championships. Having the largest gym with the most equipment also proves that bigger is better when athletes do not share equipment or floor space with recreational classes. Michael adds that “When you look onto the gym floor, no athlete is waiting in line to train, there are no cost-saving owners training the team, and there is no coach holding a coffee cup or leaning against a wall.” With only four years of ownership, Marissa and Michael Zoldan have raised the quality of girls and boys gymnastics in Broward County. The TAG USA facility is absolutely beautiful and their gymnastics program has become the consistent champion in Florida sports.

Pembroke Pines and Miramar Join Forces to Aid Victims of Hurricane Sandy By Debby Teich

H

urricane Sandy affected so much of what many in the north-

Ortis. “As South Floridians we know what it is like to need help in the aftermath of hurricanes. We were fortunate, because we did not have to deal with freezing weather and residual flooding. We need to help and the best way is to make a donation to the American Red Cross. They know how to handle emergencies and get resources into the appropriate areas. Mayor Moseley and I ask our residents of Pembroke Pines, Miramar and neighboring communities to dig into their pockets and donate whatever they can.” Patricia Rojas, a Red Cross representative, said her organization has already served over five million meals in the devastated areas, with the prospect of a greater need in the months to come. “There are still going to be many weeks to come when people are going to need to stay in shelters,” said Rojas. Both cities are also turning to the business community for help. The Miramar-Pembroke Pines Chamber of Commerce has promised to ship donated hurricane supplies to the damaged areas. Goltz said that they are looking for non-perishable food, blankets and other supplies that most people already have in their homes. “We didn’t need them this year, so we are asking you to drop them off at area businesses listed on our website and we will get them up to New Jersey,” said Goltz.

east take for granted. It will take a long time and billions of dollars for the area to recover. The cities of Pembroke Pines and Miramar have joined forces to encourage residents to help the victims of the storm. On November 13, Mayor Frank C. Ortis of Pembroke Pines and Mayor Lori Moseley of Miramar, along with President of the Miramar-Pembroke Pines Chamber of Commerce Robert Goltz and representatives from The American Red Cross, held a press conference on the front steps of Pembroke Pines City Hall to present information about the fundraising efforts. “The holiday season will soon be upon us and it is important that we remember those who are going through tough times,” said Mayor Ortis. “We should be thankful for family and friends and community partnerships that reach out to help our neighbors in time of need. I know I can count on everyone to make this Hurricane Sandy American Red Cross Fundraiser a success so that every need is met.” The cities joined together because both Mayors are on the leadership team of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and both are familiar with the devastation hurricanes can bring, having been through storms like Hurricanes Andrew and Hurricane Wilma. They encouraged residents to give what they can to the American Red Cross. Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis and Miramar Mayor Lori Moseley “Our friends and families up north are in need,” said Mayor

Chapel Trail Elementary Holds “Read, White and Blue Literary Fair Family Night” By Debby Teich

C

hapel Trail Elementary is always looking for ways to enrich

the lives of its students. The school recently held a “Read, White and Blue Literary Fair Family Night” in observance of Veterans Day, as well as National Family Literacy Month. This is the first time that these annual events have been held on the same day. For the third year, students honored their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, who have fought for their freedom. The entire student body dressed in red, white and blue for the occasion. Approximately 53 Veterans/military servicepersons, who have relatives at the school, were invited to a special breakfast and assembly. Mayor Frank C. Ortis was also present for the celebration. As they entered the school, they were saluted by the safety patrols, who lined the hallways. They were treated to a full breakfast, which they ate on patriotic placemats decorated by the students. After Letty Lopez’s fourth grade class signed the Pledge of Allegiance, the chorus sang “United We Stand,” a song composed by the school’s music director, Mr. Leonard Hodge. The audience also enjoyed a special video in honor of the veterans. Hanging in the background was a large paper quilt of American symbols that contained a square designed by every student. Hundreds attended the Literary Fair/Book Fair Family night. Each grade level set up a room with literary projects completed by the students. Most of them had a “voting” theme. “The students learned so much,” said Liz Grafe, Media Specialist. “By the end, each grade level really understood the voting process and its importance.” Kindergarten made posters to campaign for their favorite special (music, P.E., art, media) and the whole school had the opportunity to vote for one during Family Night. In first grade, the theme was “Apple Pie Voting”, which stems from the story “How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World” by Marjorie Priceman. Students sampled various apple pies and voted for their favorite one. They also learned about a variety of apple products. Second grade students read the book, “Vote!” by Eileen Cristelow and then discussed the voting process, from registration to casting a ballot. In their own election, they voted to determine which mascot should temporarily stand in for the Great Gator while he was on a much needed vacation. They created flow charts and registered to vote. They also created campaign ads, wrote newspaper articles and made speeches for the two candidates, Ernest Eagle and Polly Panther. After they counted the votes, Polly Panther was declared the winner. In third grade, the students presented a “Hallway of Presidents.” Families had an opportunity to read the reports the students wrote on all of the presidents. At the end of the Hallway, families filled out a ballot to vote for the next President of the United States. Fourth grade students studied the electoral process. They presented speeches, set up a voting station and created advertising campaigns. The theme in fifth grade was “Honor Our Heroes.” Some students wrote letters to veterans and received responses from them. Other students got to know more about a special veteran in their lives by interviewing them. All of the students read and discussed a poem titled “Remembrance Trees” by Marian Foskett & Dylan Allan. They responded to the poem on a heart-shaped paper and created red poppy trees. The event also included a Book Fair to tie in with National Family Literary month. Families had an opportunity to purchase books to raise money to add books to the Media Center. The fifth grade committee also sold pizza as a fundraiser. “One of the most important things a teacher can do is to teach their students to be literate...to be able to read and write in our world,” said Grafe. “The more we promote it then the more we reach out to others and ‘hook’ them. We need all families to spend time together reading. What a great gift that would be.” For information on Chapel Trail Elementary, call 754-323-5000 or visit http:// chapeltrail.browardschools.com

West Pines Preschool Students Cast Their Votes By Debby Teich

may have been too young to casts their votes in the official election, but they still had an opportunity to voice their opinions. After discussing the election, each one placed a red (for Romney) or a blue (for Obama) star next to the candidate they were hoping would become the next President of the United States. Obama was the clear favorite. Over 100 children attend the school, which offers full-time and part-time programs for ages 2-5. It is run by the City of Pembroke Pines under the Parks and Recreation Division. Although most of the children live in Pembroke Pines, it is not a requirement. Students can enroll throughout the year, as long as space is available. The school provides a safe, happy, nurturing environment for all of the children who attend. They participate in a wide variety of hands-on activities to help them reach their full potential and prepare them for a kindergarten setting. “We run it like a preschool, not a nursery or day care,” said Director Holly Bonkowski. “Each age group is separated into different classrooms, where they participate in activities that are developmentally appropriate.” The school features the High Reach Students presented firefighters with gifts for the needy last year. curriculum. working in small groups, the others rotate among learning centers, such as science, math, reading, writing, housekeeping and more. For an additional fee, the school also offers Spanish, gymnastics, dance and other enrichment programs. Throughout the year, the children participate in a variety of holiday activities. Last month, they experienced a holiday feast with their parents for Thanksgiving. Students casted their votes for President. This month, they will join in the annual toy drive, in partnership with the City of Pembroke Pines fire department. The children will bring unwrapped toys to donate to kids in need. They will also have an opportunity to load the gifts onto fire trucks for delivery. “These activities help teach the kids about the importance of giving and family time,” said Holly. The entire staff is DCF (Department of Children and Families) trained and certified, background checked and fingerprinted through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and monitored by the Department of Children and Families. The teachers are VPK certified and hold a Florida Childcare Professional Credential (FCCPC) CDA, AA or Bachelor’s Degree. Newest Laser Treatment for Foot Fungus

G

By Neal M. Bullock, DPM, PA

enesisPlus is a safe, effective laser treat-

ment for toes and feet, which is provided in a private office setting. Proven to be both a safe and effective solution, as well as FDA approved, GenesisPlus treats nail infection (onychomycosis), more commonly known as toenail fungus. The most common sources of infection include swimming pools, public showers, gyms and nail salons. Tight fitting shoes and nail trauma can lead to infection also. Genetic susceptibility, poor health and increasing age are also factors that increase the risk of nail infection. It is important to watch for these common signs: ▸▸ discolored nails ▸▸ yellow streaks under the nail ▸▸ distorted or thickened nails ▸▸ brittle/ crumbly or ragged nails ▸▸ separation of nail from underlying skin ▸▸ build-up of debris such as nail fragments or skin under the nail ▸▸ white spots or streaks on the nail surface

minimum 20lbs

If detected, you have become an excellent candidate for GenesisPlus. GenesisPlus passes through the nail and the surrounding tissue with no adverse effects. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment in the fungi, which causes the pigment to heat, and this kills or damages the fungal organism. The treatment can result in your nails growing normally. A single treatment session takes approximately 40 minutes to treat five to ten nails. Most patients show improvement after one treatment and total number of treatments can vary. Most patients describe the procedure as being comfortable with a small hot pinch at the end which resolves quickly. The majority of patients can resume normal activities immediately. Successful treatment results in new nail growth and healthy nails, which may take up to 12 months.

orning sickness. Weight gain. Skin changes.

When you are pregnant, it can feel as though your body no longer belongs to you. Pregnancy takes its toll on your body, especially your breasts and abdominal areas. But don’t despair; a mommy makeover can help you look your best again. On average, most women gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. This weight is stored as fatty tissue in the breasts, abdomen, flanks (love-handles), hips, buttocks and thighs. The breasts also grow due to weight gain and to prepare for nursing. The growing abdomen may result in a weakening and separation of the abdominal muscles, and stretching of the abdominal skin. This stretching may cause a breakage of the skin collagen, also known as stretch marks. Most new moms eventually lose the excess weight. Unfortunately, the weight loss is not proportional to the amount of fatty tissue in a given area. That means more weight may be lost from the breasts or buttocks than the abdomen and waist. The result is smaller breasts despite fullness of the waist and abdomen. Once a woman finishes breastfeeding, the breasts deflate even further and begin to sag. The weak abdominal muscles and the excess abdominal fat appear as fullness and bulging of the belly. Many new moms may still look pregnant even as their child is taking his or her first steps. Once again, a mommy makeover can help.

What is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is performed using a unique combination of plastic surgery procedures designed to counteract the physical effects of childbearing, and restore and enhance your body. In general, a mommy makeover may include: ▸▸ Breast augmentation ▸▸ Buttock lift ▸▸ Breast lift ▸▸ Liposuction ▸▸ Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) For example, some women need breast augmentation to correct severely deflated pancake” breasts, while others may need breast implants in combination with a breast lift. In the abdominal area, many women need a full abdominoplasty with tightening of the muscle layer as well as removal of the excess skin and fat. Some women may also benefit from liposuction to sculpt the back, hips and thighs; and smooth out their contours. Finally, an increasing number of women have also been requesting a buttock lift and other buttock-enhancing options such as the Brazilian butt lift as part of their mommy makeover. The length of the surgery varies based on the amount and type of procedures performed. Some surgeons may perform a mommy makeover as two or more separate operations. It is important to ask yourself certain questions before deciding to have a mommy makeover: ▸▸ Are you done having children? If you plan to have more children, wait. The vertical muscles in the abdomen (which are tightened during a tummy tuck) can re-separate. ▸▸ Are you at a stable weight? Being at a stable weight before surgery can help maximize the results. Lose all your baby weight with diet and exercise before having plastic surgery. ▸▸ Are you finished breastfeeding? You should wait until you are finished breastfeeding before having breast surgery because the enlarged ducts and increased blood vessel activity of the breast during nursing increases bleeding and the risk of infection. Dr. Messa is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and also maintains a Black Diamond level with Allergan. As a Black Diamond Level Account, Dr. Messa is in the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. His office is located at 2823 Executive Park Dr., in Weston. “Don’t Diet… try it!”

Holiday Cheer By Evan Baron

M

ost people think of the holiday season with

gleeful anticipation of time with family. For couples who have been through a divorce, the holiday season can often be a very stressful time. This stress can also be felt by the children of a divorced couple. It is not uncommon for holiday visitation issues to surface during this time of year. Hopefully, the parties’ settlement agreement or final judgment is specific as to time sharing. Over the course of approximately 30 years of practice, my clients have experienced many issues concerning holiday visitation. The biggest obstacle to solving an issue in court during this time of year is the reality that court time is very difficult to schedule during December and, as such, last minute issues usually will not be addressed. Of course, the parties are always able to try and work things out on their own or with the help of attorneys and mediators. I would certainly suggest not waiting until the “last minute” to address any concerns. The best way to insure there will be no conflicts during the holidays is to anticipate potential problems ahead of time and address them in the marital settlement agreement. The more specific your agreement is, the more likely you will not experience conflicts along the way. For couples with minor children who have been divorced in the past three years, Parenting Plans have been mandatory. These Parenting Plans are designed to be very specific as to time sharing in an effort to head off any trouble in years to come. Unfortunately, these Parenting Plans were not used prior to the latter part of 2008 and, therefore, many existing agreements do not include this provision. I believe the most important thing to remember is that any time sharing arrangement should always keep the best interest of the children as a priority. Children want to spend time with both parents and this is especially true during the holidays. They also want to be a part of any family gatherings. Sometimes that is not always possible, but advanced planning may be able to achieve this goal. Often parents divide the entire winter break in half, with Christmas day being the “exchange day.” As an example, in even numbered years such as 2010, perhaps Dad has the children from the day school ends until noon Christmas Day. Mom will pick up the kids and keep them until school begins again. Next year, they can reverse the schedule. In some cultures, Christmas Eve is more of a celebration, so perhaps one parent can celebrate every Christmas Eve and the other Christmas Day. Also remember that “gift giving” is not a competition, with the winner being the parent who spends the most money. Often times the finances of each parent may not be the same and one must buy gifts within his/her budget. For a parent to embarrass the other by purchasing a more expensive and lavish gift is only going to lead to hard feelings and potential problems. Hopefully, the parents can discuss this issue beforehand and plan together. Often parents wish to visit family out of town. Consider the feelings of your former spouse and the children in the planning such a trip. Children have the need to be with extended family during the Holidays. Perhaps holiday trips out of town can be rotated from year to year between parents. Mom and Dad can certainly make the holiday season a joyous time for their children or they can focus on themselves and make it a time that everyone would like to forget. s we approach the holiday season with a con-

tentious national election in our rear view mirror, many of our fellow Americans in some of the north-eastern states are still reeling from the affects of a disastrous hurricane. I know that many people who live in our community have loved ones who live in the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy. The magnitude of the hurricane’s effects is worsened by the density of the infrastructure and population in the coastal communities of New York and New Jersey, as well as cold temperatures, loss of electrical power and heating. As South Floridians we know what it is like to need help in the aftermath of hurricanes, but we were fortunate, we did not have to deal with freezing weather and residual flooding. We need to help, and the best way is to make a donation to the American Red Cross.

The devastating after-effects of Hurricane Sandy will be compounded as we head into the winter months, especially if help is not deployed as soon as possible. Mayor Lori Moseley of Miramar and I have committed to partnering with the American Red Cross to encourage as many people as possible to join with us in the on-going efforts of raising funds to assist the American Red Cross in doing what they do best, logistically, and that is to purchase supplies in bulk and deliver them as expeditiously as possible to the neediest communities. The holiday season will soon be upon us and it is important that we remember those who are going through tough times. We should be thankful for family and friends and community partnerships that reach out to help our neighbors in time of need. I know I can count on everyone to make this Hurricane Sandy American Red Cross Fundraiser a success so that every need is met. If you have any questions about this effort, please contact my office at 954-4356505 or email me at fortis@ppines.com. The number to call to make a donation is 1-800-REDCROSS.

Wipe Out Second Mortgages, Avoid Foreclosure and Stay in Your Home By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

T

housands of homeowners in our community are more than

50% upside down on their home mortgages and are looking for a way out. Some are frustrated in their attempts to modify their home loans, and others simply choose to give up their home because they are unsure of their rights. Wouldn’t it be much easier to save your home if you only had one mortgage and no other payments? How about if you were able to eliminate all your mortgage debt through a short sale, and stay in your home through a long term lease? For homeowners who have taken out a second mortgage on their home and lines of credit, facing our current economic climate can be particularly challenging. Additional liens on your home beyond your initial mortgage, however, can be wiped out through a Chapter 13 personal bankruptcy filing. When a judge removes mortgage liens from a property during bankruptcy proceedings it is referred to as “stripping” the lien. In a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, second mortgages, lines of credit and association liens against a homestead residence can be eliminated. Many bankruptcy courts follow a rule that makes a second mortgage, line of credit or other secondary lien totally unsecured if the principal amount owed on the first mortgage exceeds the fair market value of the personal residence. Even if you are not current on your first mortgage, you can use a Chapter 13 bankruptcy catch up on the arrearage over an extended period of time, or you can make a proposed modified mortgage payment under your Chapter 13 plan while your loan modification application is being processed without losing your home to foreclosure. Another effective strategy to remain in your home and wipe out excessive mortgage debt is to negotiate a short sale with an extended term leaseback. Under this strategy, you will be able to wipe out most, if not all your mortgage debt when the short sale is completed. This will allow you to obtain a “fresh start” without filing bankruptcy, and within two years you may be eligible to purchase another home under FHA guidelines. The challenge is to find an investor willing to lease your home back to you, and convincing your lender to authorize the arrangement. The Arcia Law Firm can put you in contact with serious investors who are not interested in “flipping” your home, but instead keeping families in their homes after a short sale through a long term lease. The Arcia Law Firm will also assist you in negotiating every part of the transaction with your lender right down to the closing itself. Detailed explanations of all options available to homeowners at risk of foreclosure are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy during your appointment with a member of our qualified legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information about our law firm and services.

How to Tame Your Brows: An In-Depth Look at the Secret to Beautiful Brows By Alisa Hoosein and Rosimer Privett, co-founders and resident experts at Brow Boutique

B

eauty trends come and go but perfectly

shaped brows will always be in style and perfect brows always start with professional shaping. Eyebrows are just too much of a focal point on your face to start messing with them yourself! They can make or break the rest of your look, and nobody should have to live with uneven brows, hair breakage, ingrown hairs, or a whole lot of unnecessary pain! Now, how to go about getting the perfect shape? There’s waxing, sugaring, plucking, shaving, tweezing, threading… with so many options, finding the right one can be tricky. The team at Brow Boutique focuses on threading and waxing, and makes the choice based on each individual customer needs and comfort zone.

Wondering which method is right for you? Both waxing and threading pull the hair out from the root, have similar pain levels, and have equally long lasting results. Here’s a quick synopsis of each treatment to help you decide which option will work the best for you:

Why Waxing?

Waxing removes hair quickly and effectively from the root. Warm wax is applied underneath and over the eyebrow following the desired shape. A slight pressure is applied to allow the wax to stick to all the hair. Then with a quick movement against the direction of hair growth the hair is removed. If you’re looking for the quickest route to perfect brows, waxing is likely the best option for you.

Why Threading?

Threading has been around for ages, an all-natural chemical free form of removing the hair from the root. It involves using a single piece of 100% cotton thread and removing multiple hairs at once. The specialist twists the thread around the hairs and pulls them out at one time. When it comes to less skin sensitivity, threading is the way to go. Threading is the best method for extra sensitive skin, including Retin-A or Accutane users. Ultimately, the end result is beautifully shaped brows. Whatever method you choose, an experienced professional will give you and your brows the best results. Though full and natural brows can look healthy and youthful, a clean symmetrical shape is what will boost your confidence and get you noticed! mix. His favorite person is his mommy, Jessica. When she was in college, she paid $10 for him at a flea market. Brascoe has eaten many shoes in his life, so he doesn’t play with toys anymore. He loves lounging around the house and going for long walks. He is scared of thunder, but when he wears his Thundershirt he is calm again. Brascoe’s favorite thing to do is stare at you, and when he gets your attention, he puts his paw on your knee to say, “What’s up?” Brascoe was last seen sprawled out on the kitchen floor, looking out the glass doors at the kids on the playground.

Hormone Replacement Therapy Helps Older Dogs Walk Again

M

y name is David Scott Bieber, DVM, P.A. I am a Veterinarian at Sheridan West Animal Clinic in Cooper City, Florida. I have an interesting story with a happy ending. My family and I had a Chocolate Labrador named Bruno, born 06/28/1997. Back in the end of 2008, Bruno was about 11 years old and started to have a hard time using his hind legs. He started having trouble getting up and trouble walking. We started anti-inflammatory therapy, pain management and adequan injections. By the end of December, Bruno was paralyzed in both hind legs. We took digital radiographs, and sent them to a Radiologist, which was concluded that he had chronic intervertebral disk disease in both cervical (neck) and lumbar (back) spines. This probably caused disk herniation with spinal cord compression at one or more sites. The prognosis was poor. To make a long story short, my wife and children decided to put Bruno in a wheelchair on walks. Bruno was still very happy wagging his tail and eating. But nonetheless it was heart breaking watching him pull himself everywhere in the house. Bruno at this point was still on anti-inflammatories, glucosamine and adequan injections. Then, I began to think how will Bruno walk again if he has muscle weakness, muscle atrophy, and lack of bone density in his back legs and spine. I came up with the idea to give Bruno Testosterone injections once monthly, the idea being that testosterone maintains muscle mass and increases bone density. And, if you think about it, most dogs are neutered and have zero levels of testosterone to begin with. We were not giving body building doses, just enough to maintain muscle mass, so if his spinal cord damage ever healed he would be able to walk again. Five months went by in that wheelchair, and then Bruno started to walk again. Bruno died at 14 years old of chronic kidney disease which is their natural way of going. He walked until the end. I have been doing research since 2008 in the use of testosterone injections in the geriatric canine with incredible results. We are using it mainly on large breed dogs that are neutered, that are having a hard time getting up. These illnesses include arthritis, vertebral disk degeneration, hip dysplasia, muscle atrophy and degenerative joint disease. I have been using this treatment for the last 4 years, and it’s been and continue to be very successful with great results. 25% of all canines could profit from this treatment! These injections are not expensive to give, either.

Choosing the Right Specialist for a Young Athlete with an ACL Rupture

nterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) ruptures

remain one of the most devastating injuries to the young competitive athlete. The ACL is the major supporting ligament within the knee joint providing stability to the knee during running, cutting and twisting sports. Though a traumatic collision with another athlete can cause a rupture to the ACL, a sudden alteration in speed and/or change in direction can also predispose an athlete to this injury. The athlete will often describe a loud popping sensation within the knee joint and experience severe pain, swelling and weakness combined with an inability to ambulate. Diagnosis is usually made by obtaining a proper history of injury and by performing a thorough clinical examination of the involved knee. X-rays and MRIs are extremely beneficial during this evaluation and will often help rule-out concomitant injuries to the adjacent ligaments, menisci and/or cartilage. The goal of treatment is to return the athlete back to his or her prior level of activity, including competitive sports. One may consider conservative/non-operative treatment for those patients that are extremely sedentary and inactive in athletics. In this incidence, treatment may include rehabilitation, bracing and restriction to certain activities. For those individuals who are competitive athletes and participate in high-demand twisting sports, surgical ACL reconstruction is the treatment of choice. Over the last several years, I have seen numerous patients with surgical failures from prior ACL reconstructions that have been referred to my office for further consultation and revision surgery. Having performed over 1,700 Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstructions and over 200 revision surgical procedures, I remain convinced that this procedure is extremely technical and should be treated with state-of-the-art surgical technique and attention to detail. Though re-injury may be a common cause of failure subsequent to ACL reconstruction, technique related failures are commonly seen and can often occur from improper graft selection, tunnel placement, graft tensioning, and/or methods of fixation. Timing of surgery and proper postoperative instructions, including return to athletics, also play a significant role in prevention of re-injury. In concordance with the literature barring any anatomical or growth related considerations, I prefer to utilize bone-patella tendon-bone autograft for the young, high-demand athlete. Treatment of an Anterior Cruciate Ligament rupture continues to be a challenging problem for the high school, collegiate and community athletes. It is imperative that young individuals (and parents) understand the importance of pursuing treatment by an experienced surgeon, preferably with a subspecialty interest in knee ligament reconstruction. Failure to do so may predispose an athlete to additional surgery and prevent return to sports in a timely manner. Al DeSimone, MD is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon. He is Sports Medicine Fellowship Trained in Shoulder and Knee Ligament Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. DeSimone is a partner in the Sports Medicine Associates of South Florida P.A. He practices at the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, in Weston. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call (954) 389-5900.
