Happy Holidays

M

any of our readers come from diverse cul-

tural backgrounds and religious beliefs. But, for all of us, the holiday season is a time to reflect on the passing of another year. In our busy lives, take a moment to think back and learn from the little, and the big, things that went less then perfect over the last year. Did I make enough time for the kids to give them encouragement and support? Did I balance my family time with hobbies and work? Did I treat my family, friends, neighbors and coworkers with the respect they deserve? Did I leave any issues unresolved, any minor disagreements to mend? The holiday season is also the time to lend a hand to those less fortunate than ourselves. We need to teach our children to share our good fortune not only with our loved ones, but with those in need as well. There are families right here in our communities who need our assistance. Help make the season brighter for them by giving generously. This holiday season, give your children gifts they will cherish for a lifetime: the gift of love and the gift of giving. The holidays are the perfect time to teach your children to be thankful for what they have and to help others, for that is truly what the holidays are about. Wishing everyone a joyous holiday season and a happy and healthy new year! Sincerely,

Pembroke Pines Website Has A New Look By Debby Teich

M

any turn to the City ’ s website , www. ppines .com , to find out

about cultural events, commission meetings, requirements for opening a new business, and more. In an effort to keep residents and business owners more connected, the City of Pembroke Pines recently updated its website with a more user-friendly format and a cleaner, simpler design. Visitors may even see some familiar faces and locations on the site, thanks to a contest held earlier in the year which invited residents to submit photos. Michael B. Lockett, Director of Technology Services for the City of Pembroke Pines, says that the site’s design reflects requests from residents and business owners. “The new features make finding information simple and contacting city departments much easier,” said Lockett. “We are a city of 168,000 residents. We invite everyone to log on and get to know their city better and learn about all we have to offer.” Some of the highlights include: ▸▸ Frequently Asked Questions – This is a comprehensive list of the most commonly asked questions. ▸▸ Notify Me – Visitors are invited to sign up for email or text message notifications about upcoming community activities, meetings and city updates. ▸▸ Click Fix – If you see a problem, such as a pothole or fallen tree,

just log on, report the issue, and the problem will be addressed. ▸▸ Translation Link – Pembroke Pines is home to people from all over the world. The new website can be translated into approximately 40 different languages, so visitors can feel right at home as they read it in their native language. ▸▸ Open Government Link – This offers easy access to City of Pembroke Pines information, including how elected officials conduct business. It also provides information about government structure, meetings, and access to databases and reports. ▸▸ Specialized Calendars – Find out about meetings and activities taking place in the city. The calendars are updated as soon as the information is available. ▸▸ Document Center – Gain easy access to documents, spreadsheets, pictures, videos, forms, and more. Maria Sanchez of Pembroke Pines frequently visits the website to find out about special events in the city. “The new website is so easy to use,” said Sanchez. “I can find out everything I want to know about events. I also love looking at all of the beautiful photos of Pembroke Pines.” To view the website, visit www.ppines.com.

TAG USA Gymnastics What makes your gymnastics and trampoline classes at TAG USA different? Michael: I can list that.....Our large gym allows for more training space and more equipment, classes don’t share equipment or wait in line to train, parents have front row seats to watch every moment of their children, we use lesson plans for every class, TAG has two managers monitoring every class in the gym, our coaches are background checked and trained, when our athletes reach team level, we win, and that proves that our programs work from a 3 year old beginner to advanced classes.

Tell us about TAG USA’s championships and how they have competed against other local gyms:

Q&A with Michael & Marissa Zoldan Marissa: TAG USA has a National Champion in DM Trampoline and three top five national medalists on trampoline. For Level 3 and 4 compulsory girls teams have won back to back team Florida State championships. This past season we again had State and Regional Champs on our Girls and Boys gymnastic team, Regional Champs on our prep-Optional and our first Boys Team National Qualifier.

How is TAG USA Gymnastics now becoming nationally known. Marissa: Having a National Champion and winning back to back State Championships in girls gymnastics has made us nationally known. Olympian Aly Raisman visited TAG USA to help us celebrate our championships. Winning against other local gyms also shows that we have become the best gymnastics program in this area. Michael: Once you walk into this facility, parents and gymnasts realize that this is a serious gym for serious gymnasts. Our programs, coaches and equipment offer a young gymnast a chance to succeed within their abilities. Our classes built a child’s self esteem, and if they desire to compete, we help them win championships.

he game of chess has many benefits for young children . It

requires analytical skills, concentration, planning, discipline, and more. The Southwest Regional Library offers a free chess program for kids, ages 6 to 14, who want to learn to play and compete in tournaments. The Youth Chess Club was formed seven years ago. Players of all levels meet on the first and third Saturday of each month, from 10:30am to noon. Approximately 25 students participate during the school year and the number increases to 100 during the summer. The program draws kids from Davie, Cooper City, Weston, and other surrounding communities. “Many of the kids in the club do not participate in team sports and are looking for other ways to socialize,” said Teen Services Librarian Lynn Morrison, who runs the program. “The club provides them with a way to learn chess and connects them with other kids who are also interested in the game. It is not a competitive program. We want the kids to have fun and enjoy the game.” Teen mentors help guide the players. Beginners learn about the different pieces and basic strategies, while the more advanced players learn how to anticipate moves and plan ahead. They play an average of three matches each session. The kids are encouraged to change opponents after

each match, so they can meet the other players and learn from each other. Since the library has regulation sets and timers, the kids do not have to bring anything with them. Although the parents do not stay with their kids during the games, the library does require them to remain in the building in case of an emergency. Once the students enter high school, they Teen volunteer Chloe Wawarek records a score for a player. can apply to help run the program and teach participants. They receive service hours for their efforts. One teen mentor, Chloe Wawarek, was so enthusiastic about the program that she started a chess club at her school, Charles W. Flanagan High School. Each year, the library sponsors tournaments in the spring and summer, which typically draw over 200 players. The spring tournament will be held on March 8 and 15, from 10am to 4pm. Players are divided by level and play five rounds. Since is it is not single elimination, participants continue to play even after they lose. Participants are asked to reserve a spot, so organizers can estimate the number of kids attending. The Southwest Regional Library is located at 16835 Sheridan Street in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954-357-6580 and ask for the Youth Services Department.

Children’s Harbor to Provide First Holiday Memories for Many Children By Debby Teich

ost people have a favorite holiday memory. It may be sit-

ting around a festive dinner table with family and friends, opening presents with family members, decorating a Christmas tree or lighting a Hanukkah Menorah. A group of Broward County foster children who do not have memories like these will have an opportunity to create them this holiday season at Children’s Harbor in Pembroke Pines. “It’s wonderful to see the children experience a happy, loving holiday,” said Sue Glasscock, President & CEO of Children’s Harbor. “For many, this will be the first time they will experience a joyful holiday celebration.”

The nonprofit organization provides a home for up to 34 foster children at any given time. These children come from broken homes, having been abused and/ or neglected, and removed from the only family they have known. Brothers and sisters arrive at Children’s Harbor, with difficult pasts and often lack the fond memories children should have. Children’s Harbor inspires hope and rebuilds lives by keeping brothers and sisters together in loving foster care homes, and by providing care to pregnant or parenting foster teens and their babies. Children’s Harbor also helps families stay together and grow stronger with in-home counseling services. Before arriving at Children’s Harbor this year, siblings Mario, 10, and Maria, 15, had never experienced a real holiday celebration. According to Maria, “holidays were just like any other day.” Last month, they enjoyed their first Thanksgiving dinner. This month, they will help decorate a Christmas tree and eat a traditional Christmas dinner - all with their Children’s Harbor family. Children’s Harbor has two fundraising events in the month of December. ▸▸ On December 14, watch the Winterfest Boat Parade from the premier vantage point of the Chart House in Fort Lauderdale. Guests will enjoy a great meal, lively conversation and a dinner show. The cost is $250pp, which can provide groceries for one week for the children living in one of the Sibling Residential homes. ▸▸ On December 20, join in the fun at the Sea What a Difference You Make Luncheon aboard the Celebrity Equinox, while it is docked in Port Everglades. Spend the afternoon eating gourmet food and enjoying firstclass entertainment. The cost is $50pp, which can purchase a one month supply of diapers and supplies for one of the babies. By purchasing a ticket to both the Boat Parade Fundraiser and the Luncheon for $300pp, three foster brothers and sisters will be able to stay together for one night at Children’s Harbor. Children’s Harbor is located at 19425 SW 58th Manor, in Pembroke Pines. For information, visit www. childrensharbor.org or call 954-252-3072.

Pill Box Pharmacies & Medical Supply Opens In West Pembroke Pines By Debby Teich

W

hether you are looking for a nebulizer, wheelchair, hospital bed,

last minute gift, or hard to find drug, Pill Box Pharmacies & Medical Supply has it all. The neighborhood pharmacy offers a wide selection of goods, as well as superior customer service. Pill Box recently opened its fourth store, which is conveniently located in West Pembroke Pines.

Co-owner and pharmacist Barbara Sammarco answered some commonly asked questions about the new Pill Box store.

Why did you open the new Pill Box? I worked in retail pharmacies

for 25 years and frequently sent customers to the Pill Box for hard to find products. I have always liked their focus on customer service, which is not a priority at most chain pharmacies. When I decided to open an independent community pharmacy, I immediately called Pill Box owner Steve Pressman and we partnered to open Pill Box’s fourth location.

What is your background? I grew up in South Florida in a Hispanic

household. I received my pharmacy degree from University of Florida and spent most of my professional life working in Broward County.

How is the Pill Box different from other pharmacies? At Pill Box, we can help you with all of your pharmacy needs, whether it is medical supplies, prescriptions, or special custom compounding needs. We carry hard to find products and will special order almost anything that is needed. We take the time to answer questions and work with each patient’s individual needs. We also accept most insurance and offer local delivery. Describe the staff. Our staff includes: myself, Barbara Sammarco

(pharmacist/owner), my husband Chad (medical department manager/ firefighter/paramedic), Erica and Jessica (certified registered technicians/

certified compounding technicians) and my mother-in-law Linda (cashier).

Do you offer compound and custom medication? We provide

a variety of compounded medications, such as antibiotic suspensions, bio-identical hormones, creams and suppositories. We can flavor children’s medications and also make custom medications for pets in our dedicated laboratory located in the pharmacy.

Chad Sammarco helps a customer find the right brace.

What types of medical equipment and supplies do you offer? We

have all types of wheelchairs, walkers, canes, rollators, and more. We sell a wide variety of bandages, first aid needs, knee braces, wraps, heating pads, athletic braces, nebulizers, breast pumps, and more. We rent wheelchairs, nebulizers, crutches, knee walkers, breast pumps, hospital beds, and lift chairs on a monthly and weekly basis.

Does the store sell gifts? We sell unique gifts that you will only find at Pill Box, including stuffed animals, Britto gifts, Essie nail products, Sorme cosmetics, birthday gifts, figurines, and a full array of greeting cards. The new Pill Box Pharmacy & Medical Supplies store in West Pembroke Pines is located at 17529 Pines Blvd., just 2 ½ miles west of I-75. For information, call 954-443-7455 or visit www.Pillbox123.com. The three other locations include: Memorial West Medical Bldg., in Pembroke Pines; 1700 NW 122nd Terr., on Taft and Flamingo, in Pembroke Pines; and 1932 Weston Rd., in Weston.

Swing for the Green Golf Tournament Total Reaches $275,000 By Debby Teich

C

arl S hechter , Pembroke Pines Commissioner and founder of

the 10th Annual Swing for the Green Golf Tournament, has a big reason to smile. Over the past ten years his tournament has raised $275,000 to benefit the health and wellbeing of the senior population in South Broward County. All ten tournaments have been held at the Hollybrook Golf and Country Club in Pembroke Pines. “As our community and nation continue to grow older, it becomes more important that services benefiting the aging population are current and available,” said Shechter. The tournament, which always sells out, enjoys support from the Mayor, City Commission, local businesses and many others. It includes a lot of camaraderie and friendly competition, as well as great prizes, raffle gifts and food.

First place was awarded to Vice Mayor Angelo Castillo, Commissioner Jay Schwartz, Dan Ricico and Beam Furr. Second place was awarded to players from McKinnley Insurance: Ron Beard, Dan Baquiran, Leon Sheppard and Gil Tolentino. Some of the raffle prizes included: golf bags from Vera Cadillac, an outdoor BBQ from Home Depot, a weekend golf package from Grand Palms, a 55” Flat Screen TV, and more. Commissioner Castillo won and donated back the weekend golf package at Grand Palms. He held an impromptu live auction and sold the prize to golfer Stefan Hoyer, netting an additional $200 for the fundraiser. For information about the SWFP Community Center, call 954-450-6888 or visit www.ppines.com and click on Departments and select Community Services.

The exhibit is designed to spread the word about the importance of reducing consumption and reusing materials. All of the entries are made of at least 75% scrap materials and will be judged on the creative reuse of repurposed, or scrap materials typically found at the Trash to Treasure warehouse. Prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories at the Opening Celebration, held on December 6, from 7 - 9pm. “This show promises to be one of our most creative,” said Robyn Vegas, Cultural Arts Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. “Trash to Treasure is one of the best kept secrets in Fort Lauderdale. Veterans Honored at Chapel Trail Elementary By Debby Teich

F

or the fourth year , students at Chapel Trail

Elementary in Pembroke Pines honored their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, who fought for their freedom. Approximately 62 Veterans, who have relatives at the school, were invited to a special breakfast and assembly in observance of Veterans Day. Dressed in red, white and blue, the students, faculty and staff lined the hallways to wait for the Veterans to arrive. They clapped and waved flags as each one passed on their way to the assembly. Using patriotic placemats decorated by 2nd grade students, the Veterans and their relatives feasted on eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, biscuits and more. As a 4th grade student recited the Pledge of Allegiance, 5th graders interpreted it in Sign Language. Fifth graders also recited the poem, “Rememberance Trees” and gave out poppies, a flower that is symbolic of Veterans Day. The chorus sang “United We Stand,” which was composed by the school’s music teacher, Leonard

Hodge. The audience also enjoyed a special slide show that included photos of many of the Veterans in the room. “The Veterans have done the ultimate sacrifice to protect every citizen in our country and our freedom,” said Liz Grafe, media specialist. “The students were incredibly honored to be amongst their ‘heroes.’”

bunion is an enlargement of the joint at the base

of the big toe that forms when the bone or tissue at the big toe joint moves out of place. This causes the toe to bend toward the others resulting in an often painful lump of bone on the foot. Since this joint carries a significant amount of the body’s weight while walking, bunions can be extremely painful if untreated. How do you know if you have a bunion? Symptoms may include: development of a firm bump on the outside of the foot at the base of the big toe, redness, swelling or pain at or near the joint, corns or irritations caused by overlap of the first and second toes and restricted motion of the big toe. How do bunions form? Bunions may form when the normal balance of forces on the joints and tendons of the foot is disrupted . This may lead to instability in the joint and cause a deformity. The deformity is brought about by years of abnormal motion and pressure on the joint. They are caused commonly by the way we walk, our inherited foot type, or our choice of shoes.

What can you do to get relief? There are conservative treatments for bunion pain as well as surgical options. Treatment options vary depending on the type and severity of each bunion. Identifying the deformity early on in its development is the key in avoiding surgery. Podiatric medical attention should be sought at the first indication of pain, because if left untreated bunions may get larger and more painful.

outh Florida is often the focus of contro -

versy, because of the frequency of unlicensed individuals performing cosmetic surgery. In 2012, Americans spent 11 billion dollars on facelifts, Botox injections, breast augmentations and other purely aesthetic and technically unnecessary cosmetic procedures. Because of the overwhelming desire to look and feel better, people will often choose their plastic surgery based on cost and availability. Unsuspecting patients will respond to a billboard advertising cheap buttock enhancement or breast augmentation without considering the qualifications of the person performing the procedure. Family practitioners, internal medicine physicians, dentists, and general surgeons are not plastic surgeons. Furthermore, taking a weekend course taught by a poorly trained or minimally qualified physician does not suffice for an accredited surgical residency program and board certification by an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) certifying organization. It is important that any cosmetic surgical procedure be performed by a surgeon who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery is not accredited by the ABMS, and therefore, its members do not have the same documented training or certification as a physician certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Board of Facial and Plastic Reconstructive Surgery. No patient should ever undergo any surgical procedure by a physician who doesn’t have hospital privileges to perform that procedure. Hospital committees review credentials, experience, and recommendations of physicians prior to granting privileges to perform surgery in their facility. No procedure, whether it is non-invasive or an actual surgery, should be performed in someone’s house, hotel room, or garage, as is often reported after a disastrous complication occurs. Patients should be evaluated and treated in licensed, accredited facilities, and anesthesia should only be administered by either a board certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA). When a potential patient is told that their procedure should be performed only under local because anesthesia is not safe, you should beware. Practitioners will advertise procedures under local only for two reasons. First, they don’t have privileges to perform the procedure in an outpatient center or hospital. Second, the facility is not accredited, so only procedures under straight local anesthesia can be performed. I want to give you a word of caution about synthetic injections to enlarge or enhance the buttocks. Underground centers will inject silicone or other unknown substances into the buttocks. The quality and potential toxicity of these chemicals can have life threatening complications. Accredited facilities are more likely to use only FDA approved fillers and are required to maintain specific standards of care to ensure patient safety. Always remember to research your physician. Require board certification by only an ABMS certifying organization. Look for membership in selective societies, such as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, which require documented experience in cosmetic surgery. All board certified physicians should participate in the Maintenance of Certification or MOC and document that they are continuing their medical education to compete with today’s advancing medical technology. Finally, remember that you may cut costs by getting a good deal at a subpar center, but in the long run, it may end up costing much more than a few extra dollars. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and consultant for Allergan Medical and has achieved the Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. New Loan Modification Program Is 85% Successful By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

A

fter much anticipation , on April 1, 2013, the new Loss

Mitigation Mediation Program (“LMM”) was launched in all South Florida Bankruptcy Courts. This new program is in direct response to the frustration experienced by many homeowners who have tried to modify their home loans time and time again without success. The success rate for traditional loan modifications outside of bankruptcy is less than 20%. So far, however, about 85% of the eligible homeowners that have completed the LMM program have obtained permanent loan modifications with significantly better loan terms. Here are some of the other benefits of the LMM Program that you need to consider: ▸▸ Under the LMM program, the foreclosure process stops immediately and any foreclosure sale date is automatically cancelled. ▸▸ The entire program is court supervised. A mediator will be appointed to your case. All negotiations must be concluded and a decision rendered within 150 days of the date a mediation Order is signed by the Court. ▸▸ The other frustrating feature for homeowners about conventional loan modification applications is the fact that lenders continuously misplace documents or require updated documents. Under the LMM program, there are no more “lost documents” by the bank, since all documents are uploaded to a single website to which all parties have immediate access. ▸▸ If the lender refuses to provide a timely response to a completed loan modification application, or even refuses to participate in the program, the homeowner now has the right to seek assistance from a federal judge to ensure that the lender complies with its obligations. This enforcement component is simply not available to homeowners trying to do a loan modification on their own. ▸▸ The program applies to both Chapter 7 and 13 if you are surrendering a property, but loan modifications under the LMM are only available under a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. ▸▸ There is an increased likelihood that your Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Plan will be confirmed by the Trustee given that once the mortgage loan is modified under LMM, the homeowner’s future financial picture is more clearly defined. While these are exciting new benefits for any homeowner struggling with a loan modification of their mortgage, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy petition is NOT a do it yourself proposition. In fact, many consumers attempt to file their own and their cases are dismissed with prejudice for 180 days for failure to comply with the Bankruptcy Code. This means that you cannot refile for bankruptcy during that time. Any homeowner even considering this alternative must seek sound legal advice from attorneys with Chapter 13 bankruptcy experience, like the knowledgeable staff at the Arcia Law Firm. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or frustrated with a loan modification process, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation with an attorney, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information.

Healthy Holiday Eating Gina Sweat MS, RD, LDN and Lilian Craggs DHA, RDN, LDN The holidays are the time of the year when maintaining a healthy weight becomes more challenging. The temptation to overeat increases at holiday gatherings and the busyness of holiday shopping causes some people to forgo their exercise regimen. Registered Dietitians, Gina Sweat and Lilian Craggs offer us these practical tips. How do I go to a holiday celebration and avoid overeating? There are a few ways to accomplish this. First, avoid going to a celebration on an empty stomach. Skipping meals can lead to consuming more calories at the event. Another technique you can use is eating more vegetables than fatty and sugary foods. Keep in mind that it is not impolite to tell the host that you are full and have enjoyed the food and atmosphere very much.

Sometimes the holidays become stressful not only for weight management but also from shopping and holiday crowds. What are some simple tips to reduce these stressors? If you realize that you are feeling stressed, try doing something that brings you joy instead of eating. This can be reading a book, getting a massage, walking your dog, among many other activities. We also encourage people to plan ahead. A simple tip is to prepare the days’ meals ahead of time and use the calendar or reminder feature to help you shop early. Planning can help you avoid the stress of crowds which could lead to eating fatty or overlysugary holiday foods. Don’t let the stress of the holidays lead you to emotional eating. Eat as a response of your body’s physiological hunger rather than “mental” hunger. Cleveland Clinic Florida offers educational lectures and programs throughout the year designed to promote healthy living. For more information about our Non-Surgical Weight Loss Program or to schedule a consultation, please visit clevelandclinicflorida.org or call 800.639.DOCTOR.

It is my year to host a holiday party. What can I do to make it healthier and less fattening than traditional holiday parties? You can always offer healthy alternatives. For example, try substituting baked apples with cinnamon and fat free whipped cream for the traditional apple pie dessert. You may also offer diced apples sprinkled with caramel sauce, or a simple fruit salad. One can still enjoy a sweet treat without exceeding calories. What is an easy way to use exercise to help prevent weight gain during the holidays? If you know you are going to consume extra calories, plan to exercise more the day before and after to compensate for the extra calories. In addition, taking a 15 to 20 minute walk after eating helps digestion and burns a few extra calories. Does holiday time necessarily mean I have to overeat? Change your thinking of the holidays and think of it as a time to enjoy family and friends rather than a time to indulge in food and extra calories. Instead of focusing on the food, spend the time connecting with your loved ones. Friends and family can be more fulfilling than food.

Holiday Cheer? By Evan Baron

M

ost people think of the holiday season with

gleeful anticipation of time with family. For couples who have been through a divorce, the holiday season can often be a very stressful time. This stress can also be felt by the children of a divorced couple. It is not uncommon for holiday visitation issues to surface during this time of year. Hopefully, the parties’ settlement agreement or Parenting Plan is specific as to time sharing. Over the course of approximately 30 years of practice, my clients have experienced many issues concerning holiday visitation. The biggest obstacle to solving an issue in court during this time of year is the reality that court time is very difficult to schedule during December and, as such, last minute issues usually will not be addressed. Of course, the parties are always able to try and work things out on their own or with the help of attorneys and mediators. I would certainly suggest not waiting until the “last minute” to address any concerns. The best way to insure there will be no conflicts during the holidays is to anticipate potential problems ahead of time and address them in the marital settlement agreement. The more specific your agreement is, the more likely you will not experience conflicts along the way. For couples with minor children, who have been divorced in the past five years, Parenting Plans have been mandatory. These Parenting Plans are designed to be very specific as to time sharing in an effort to head off any trouble in years to come. Unfortunately, these Parenting Plans were not used prior to the latter part of 2008 and therefore many existing agreements do not include this provision. I believe the most important thing to remember is that any time sharing arrangement should always keep the best interest of the children as a priority. Children want to spend time with both parents and this is especially true during the holidays. They also want to be a part of any family gatherings. Sometimes that is not always possible, but advanced planning may be able to achieve this goal. Often parents divide the entire winter break in half, with Christmas Day being the “exchange day.” As an example, in odd numbered years, such as 2013, perhaps Dad has the children from the day school ends until noon Christmas Day. Mom will pick up the kids and keep them until school begins again. Next year, they can reverse the schedule. In some cultures, Christmas Eve is more of a celebration, so perhaps one parent can celebrate every Christmas Eve and the other Christmas Day. Also remember that “gift giving” is not a competition, with the winner being the parent who spends the most money. Often times the finances of each parent may not be the same and one must buy gifts within his/her budget. For a parent to embarrass the other by purchasing a more expensive and lavish gift is only going to lead to hard feelings and potential problems. Hopefully, the parents can discuss this issue beforehand and plan together. Often parents wish to visit family out of town. Consider the feelings of your former spouse and the children in the planning such a trip. Children have the need to be with extended family during the Holidays. Perhaps holiday trips out of town can be rotated from year to year between parents. Mom and Dad can certainly make the holiday season a joyous time for their children or they can focus on themselves and make it a time that everyone would like to forget. If you need any further questions answered, please feel free to contact my office. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. trong demand, combined with a limited supply of

homes, continues to fuel the double digit appreciation in home prices throughout Southwest Broward County. The competition for homes has frustrated buyers, some of whom have been searching for homes for months. Cash investors, who helped to revive the housing market to where we are today, still see the value in the pricing and are purchasing a majority of properties at or close to fair market value. In addition, global buyers, from Latin America and as far away as China, are currently and will continue to fuel our housing boom for some time to come. Although the pace of home sales has slowed slightly from the previous months, sales are steady. Most homes for sale that are priced at fair market value are still attracting multiple offers. Prices have been escalating at this pace or more for the past eighteen months. Industry leaders say that these price spikes are unsustainable; the question that remains is when prices will settle in. In my opinion, as the larger investor entities exit the market, prices will even out, which will present more opportunities for traditional buyers. With rising prices, homeowners are becoming energized to price increases and are finding it encouraging to enter the market. Many homeowners who had the desire to sell were holding off. They either owed more on their mortgage than the house was worth, and/or they couldn’t get the prices they wanted. Homeowners in this bracket now find themselves in a more favorable position and are jumping at the opportunity. This will assist our inventory challenge to a small degree. Although opportunities for potential buyers are limited, often leading to buyer frustration, I strongly encourage traditional buyers that are presently in the market for a home to continue on their quest and not to get discouraged. Most buyers get frustrated and want to postpone their purchase, which in my opinion doesn’t make a lot of financial sense. This will cost them more in the long term in regards to rising interest rates and the cost of the home itself. The longer you wait the “less home” you’ll get for the money. In many cases, buyers that wait “price themselves out of the market” by not being able to afford the home that were approved to purchase in the first place due to rising values. As a real estate professional who works diligently with buyers and sellers on a daily basis, I understand the emotional drain that can occur with buying or selling a home. It’s not easy to do, but if buyers and sellers can somehow find a way to separate their emotions from logic, things tend to fall into place much more easily. njuries to the

foot and ankle are common in dancers. Twisting injuries are common when the dancer lands incorrectly and turns the foot down and in. Overuse injuries most commonly involve the tendons around the back and the inside of the ankle. They are more common in dancers who do not stretch properly or increase training time too rapidly. Certain foot types are more predisposed to twisting and overuse injuries. Dancers are prone to different types of injuries including: 1. Achilles Tendon – Injuries are due to inflexibility and overuse of the tendon. They are more common in dancers who are flatfooted and go barefoot. Stiffness and soreness are present after getting up from sitting. The pain usually starts to feel better with activity but recurs later. Rest, ice, therapy and occasionally a short period of immobilization may be necessary to allow the area to heal. 2. Impingement Syndromes – Pain in the front or back of the ankle can occur from a dancer standing “on point” or “demi point”. The pain in the back of the ankle is made worse by the foot pointing down and may be caused by a small fracture to the cartilage in the back of the ankle (“painful os trigonum”). Pain in the front of the ankle is usually caused by thickening of the ankle joint lining and can cause pain while moving the leg forward on the foot. Immediate treatment with temporary immobilization followed by physical therapy may be necessary to allow the injury to heal. Surgery may be necessary if unresponsive to conservative care. This can include an arthroscopy to the ankle, which will allow a dancer to resume activities in most cases within a week. An impingement on the back of the ankle may require an open or arthroscopic procedure that will allow the dancer to resume activities in approximately two to four weeks. 3. Fractures – Overuse bone injuries are common and can cause stress fractures to the foot or leg. Pinpoint pain and low-grade swelling usually are present on the bone. These injuries need to be immobilized in a cast or walking boot. During this time cross training is allowed to keep the dancer fit. Cartilage injuries to the ankle joint (“osteochondral fractures”) may also be present which would cause chronic pain and low-grade swelling to the ankle. 4. Ankle ligaments – Can be injured due to twisting the foot down and under. Pain, swelling and discoloration may be present. Immediate treatment with temporary immobilization followed by physical therapy may be necessary to allow the injury to heal. If chronic instability develops, surgery may be necessary to completely restore mobility to the ankle and allow the dancer to resume all activities. Prognosis is usually excellent. 5. Sesamoid injuries – The sesamoids are small bones on the ball of the foot near the big toe that bear weight. Frequent jumping or overloading may cause the bone to break or injure the cartilage that covers them. Tenderness is felt directly on the bone and the dancer will be unable to participate. Temporary immobilization in a boot usually allows them to heal. Surgery may be necessary if conservative treatment fails. lthough B reast C ancer Awareness M onth is

now behind us, the importance of being aware of breast cancer, early detection , self–examination and general gynecological exams should be on our minds all year long. Every woman, whether she is in her teens, 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s or 70’s, should be diligent with her own mammogram and pap smear screening and be comfortable performing her own self breast exam. Every woman should have a routine gynecologic exam every 12-24 months depending upon her medical history. Prevention of diseases and early detection of problems are the main reasons why every woman should consider her own gynecologic exam as important as taking her children for their “back to school check up.” Let’s look at the busy mom or professional woman. Both are juggling work in or out of the home, spouses, children, parents and many other responsibilities. These women can easily neglect their annual gynecological exam and screenings. It is imperative for a woman to take the time to take care of her own health and learn about preventive measures at any age. Every woman deserves her own moment to discuss her own personal issues as well concerning, premenstrual syndrome, sexually transmitted infections, birth control and hormonal changes. Today our teens are maturing faster and are being exposed in their daily lives to many difficult situations regarding relationships and personal health issues. A teen should be informed about how her body functions, her menstrual cycles, the importance of safe sex behaviors and the risks of teen pregnancy. The more knowledge a young woman has, the more likely she will be able to make safe and responsible choices and take care of her own health. Women must take charge of their own health. We are fortunate today to have many new technologies and testing modalities. The new 3D mammography, Tomosynthesis, is now being offered at many centers and can detect up to 15% more breast cancers than traditional screening. We have the ability with our pap smears now to detect abnormal or pre cancerous cells, viruses and bacterial infections with just two swabs in one visit. Dr. Michele Lapayowker is a Board certified Gynecologist serving women in Broward since 1995. She cares for each patient individually and has a gentle approach to women of all ages. Her Plantation Office is in the Bennett Medical Plaza at 201 NW 82nd Ave, Suite 104, Plantation, Fl., 33324. Household Hazardous Waste program in Pembroke Pines. This summer, Waste Pro USA became the City’s sanitation/recycling contractor. In August, Waste Pro launched a new household hazardous waste program. Pembroke Pines residents will no longer need to travel to the Broward County collection sites to dispose of their household chemicals. For your convenience, disposal sites will be located within our community on a twice a month basis. In response to requests from our residents, Waste Pro expanded the program in October and is now accepting electronic waste and many more of your household products. In an effort to achieve greater participation from the community, the location sites rotate between the east, central and western parts of our city. Residents must provide valid identification for proof of Pembroke Pines residency and all items must be labeled and in their original container. Please do not place household hazardous waste in your trash cart. Visit the City’s website for the list of items accepted. Pembroke Pines residents will no longer be permitted to use the Broward County hazardous waste disposal sites and must use the locations in Pembroke Pines. In December, hazardous waste can be dropped at the following locations, from 8am - 4pm: ▸▸ December 7 - Waste Pro Facility - 17302 Pines Blvd. ▸▸ December 21 - Howard Forman Health Park - 8301 Pembroke Road For additional information please call Waste Pro USA at 954-967-4200 or the City of Pembroke Pines at 954-450-6900. Perry Seider) have been practicing Oral Surgery in South Broward County since 1977, so this is the 37th year we will be serving the people of our community. In 2009, my son, Dr. Paul Seider, joined our practice.

What is your background? I (Dr. Perry Seider)

grew up in New York City and attended Hunter College of the City University of New York. After completing my Bachelor of Arts degree at Hunter College, I attended New York University College of Dental Medicine. Upon graduation, I continued my training at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City and then Columbia University’s St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center. After completing my residency in Oral Surgery in 1976, I moved to South Broward County to begin my professional practice. I have been in practice in the community for 37 years. I am proud to be a longstanding resident and caregiver in our community.

Who are the other doctors in the practice? Dr. Jeffrey Stevens has been my profes-

sional partner since 1977. He is a well-trained Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with 37 years of experience in our practice. He is professional, knowledgeable, sincere and kind. He is a wonderful diagnostician and takes the time to listen to his patients’ concerns. Dr. Paul Seider is the eldest son of my three sons. He has been interested in Oral Surgery since he was a young boy and joined our practice in 2009 after completing his training. His demeanor, his knowledge and

Broward Oral Surgery Associates

We offer routine elective services that may avoid potential problems in the future, as well as cosmetic procedures, such as dermal fillers and Botox. We also fabricate snore guards to help patients achieve a good night’s sleep. Since we have encountered most situations numerous times throughout the years, we are adept at handling everything from the very simple to the extremely complicated.

Do you pull teeth? A very large

part of our practice consists of the removal of teeth. Wisdom teeth make up a large portion of our daily schedule.

Do you offer dental implants and grafting? Yes. For over 30 years, we have been plac-

ing dental implants for patients who have been unfortunate enough to lose a tooth or multiple teeth. We also have 25 years of experience in grafting the necessary soft and hard tissue to replace any deficiencies that may exist.

What sets Broward Oral Surgery apart from similar practices? Our experi-

years. Robyn is a true professional and has the ability to make our patients comfortable in all situations, from the front desk to the dental chair. DeeDee has been a valued member of our staff for 20 years. Her knowledge of insurance matters and her ability to treat people in a caring manner is second to none. Christine, who has been with us for eight years, is knowledgeable about insurance matters, extremely professional and very kind toward our patients. Venus, Julie, Gaye and Sasha are the newest members of our staff and prove every day that they are valued members of our team.

Do you perform all of the procedures in your office? All routine procedures are per-

formed in our offices. We are also on staff at the Memorial Hospital system to perform any procedures that require the use of hospital facilities.

How do most patients hear about your office? Most of our referrals come from other

dentists who are confident that their patients will be well taken care of in a safe environment. We also pride ourselves on the fact that many of our patients are referred by previous patients that have had a positive experience in our offices.
