A Happy & Healthy 2015
T
he holiday season has come to a close . A s we
recover from all the festivities of the season, we wonder what is in store for us in this year of 2015. While we make resolutions to better ourselves, we should remember that the most important improvement to our daily lives is to spend more quality time with our family and friends. To enjoy each other’s company and companionship, to truly listen to each other’s concerns, to offer understanding and a helping hand are resolutions all of us can easily achieve. Therefore, let me offer one last toast to 2015: “Appreciate your family and friends!” Happy New Year from all of us at Our City Media.

The 16 contestants participated in a question and answer segment and showcased their talents such as dance, poetry reading and cheerleading. Each young girl was presented with a trophy and distinct award. The title winner, 14-year-old Coconut Creek resident, Bailey Bender, was crowned by Miss Florida USA Ashleigh Lollie. Runners Celebrate The Season at 30th Annual Jingle Bell Jog BY JILL SHARPE
P
lenty of folks dressed as Santa Claus , elves ,
and reindeers in Sunrise were not about to wait around until December 25th to make their annual run around town. The Jingle Bell Jog 5K Run/Walk on December 6th saw runners decked out as a whole host of holiday characters for some friendly running competition. Held at the Sawgrass Technology Park in Sunrise, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Road Runners Club (GFLRRC) celebrated 30 years of putting on the Jingle Bell Jog. The race route wound around the entire park and alongside West Sunrise Blvd for a stretch. It took a dedicated army of roughly 80 volunteers to accommodate the 600 people that took part in the 5K. “This event is a passion for the club and all the people who volunteer to put this on,” said Bob Barnard, Race Director with the GFLRRC. “It’s a lot of fun, but it takes a lot of work from our sponsors and volunteers to make it happen.” Awards were handed out for the top three overall finishers and then by age groups ranging from 10 and under to 70 and over. Ceramic reindeer head coffee mugs and reindeer plaques were given out as prizes, including for the runners wearing the best costumes. People came dressed as candy canes, penguins, and characters from the movie ‘Frozen’, but brothers RJ and Xavier Calder of Sunrise won first place for their matching elf costumes. No matter what they wore, everyone in attendance enjoyed working up a good sweat among many good friends. “I ran the Jingle Bell Jog before and am training for a half-marathon now, so this event is always on my list,” said Roxanne Williams. “I love seeing all the people here in costumes, and this run is so good that I even made my friend come along for her first 5K.” Fifty children took part in the ‘Youth Mile’ run and ‘Elf Romp’ for kids 10 and under this year. “The ‘Youth Mile’ is my favorite part, as that’s where it all starts for the kids,” said Barnard. “If they enjoy physical activities and running now, they’ll be healthy and active for the rest of their lives.” The finish line ended in a small grassy area where the runners could refuel, reconnect with friends, and relax among a cluster of vendors. The First Aid tent was mercifully quiet as participants stayed hydrated and took advantage of all the healthy snacks available. Sponsors ranging from local businesses like Runner’s Depot, Running Wild, 212 Chiropractic, Superior PrintWorks, and Functional Fitness to national brands like Sports Authority, Naked Juice, and Starbucks set up booths alongside other local running clubs. Vantage Point Aerials even brought a flying drone equipped with a camera to take a panoramic group photograph of all the runners. Only in South Florida can one have such summery, sunny weather in December, and that was appreciated by out-oftown guests at the race. Jim Werner lives in St. Louis but was in town on a business trip. He wanted to stay active while on the road so he found the Jingle Bell Jog and wanted to join in on the fun. “It’s a little warm in my elf costume, but it’s just great to have a nice run in a warm environment,” he said. “It’s just festive and fun here.” For information about next year’s jog contact the GFLRRC at 954-461-5515 or visit them online at www.gflrrc.org.

STARTS OFF WITH AN AMAZING OFFER - ONE FREE MONTH OF UNLIMITED YOGA CLASSES Q. Is yoga mostly a women’s practice? A. There are statistics that show
T
his New Yoga Institute is centrally located at 12900 West State Rd. 84, parallel to 595, serving the City of Davie, Plantation, Cooper City, Weston, Pembroke Pines and Miramar with their Grand Opening scheduled for January 17th. We took the time to interview the managing partner and one of 6 full tme instructors, Stephanie Cabrera, to ask several questions. The first one being... Q.WHY 1 FREE MONTH OF UNLIMITED YOGA CLASSES? This is unheard of.” A . Most, if not all yoga studios, offer 1 free class. In reality it is very difficult to get a true sense or feeling for what yoga is in one class. We want everyone interested in getting into yoga, from the beginner as well as those already enjoying and practicing yoga to get acquainted with our studio, staff and for beginners to see what yoga is all about. When I got into yoga I took advantage of the free class offers and to be honest I was not sure if yoga was for me. I had a real purpose and goal to practice some ongoing type of exercise having started with Kempo Karate at a very early age and attaining my Jr. Black Belt at the age of 8. I later went on to become a dancer and member of the Somerset Academy dance team and the FIU Dazzlers. Always looking for the best exercise and activities to be healthy. I continued to pursue my goal and am truly glad I did, since there are many types of yoga styles and had I not continued I would have most likely not fallen in love with yoga as I did.
Q. When you say different types of yoga, what do you mean? Isn’t yoga just yoga? A. No, most definitely not. There are many styles of yoga, hot power yoga which can be heated or non-heated, there is Vinyasa which is a flow etc. and not all studios offer different types of yoga. So finding the right style that fits you is very important. If you take a class and that specific type of yoga does not fill your heart and soul, it is difficult and you get discouraged, you might never bring yoga into your life. You would have missed out on one of the best practices and lifestyles that an individual can enjoy. Q. So you offer different types of yoga? A. Yes, we offer different types during different days and hours. We have two large studios which allows us to do so without having the students feeling crowded and uncomfortable. Our classes start at 6:30 am and go on throughout the day unti 7:30 pm. Our institute is designed to accommodate our students’ needs and schedules.
this fact and the perception is that it is, but Yoga is for all genders and ages. It offers many benefits such as flexibility, relaxation, breathing and control of mind and body which is beneficial to all. We also offer a UNIQUE and NEW style of MARTIAL KRAMA YOGA which combines the movements and flow of yoga with the cardio and extensive martial arts movements. It is not to be confused with martal arts. It is yoga with the teachings of self defense rolled into one practice. This Martial Krama Yoga is truly unique and exciting, it allows for all genders of all ages to enjoy a full enriching practice not offered by any other yoga studio or studios in general. Our institute is designed whereas a couple can come in and practice different styles during the same time. Moms and their daughters can attend the yoga class and fathers and their kids can attend the Martial Krama Yoga classes or just sit and relax in our comfortable lobby.
Q. The 1 MONTH of FREE UNLIMITED YOGA applies to all types of yoga including this new Martial Krama Yoga class? A. Yes, you can attend any of our classes at any of the times they are scheduled at your convenience. This offers everyone the opportunity to find the right type of yoga that best fits them. Q. Are there any costs involved, like having to rent or buy a yoga mat etc.? A. No, Other studios offer rentals of mats which we also offer but during the Free Month of Unlimited Yoga we provide the mats at no charge and if you decide to become a member of our institute we offer class packages in which we include our branded high quality mats as part of the package and/or offer great discounts on the same. This also includes our custom made dry fit attire and yoga pants which are offered to our students at incredibly discounted prices. Wow, I wish we could continue talking about yoga and your new institute forever, you are so passionate when you talk about yoga that it makes me want to be a part of your institute. Well, you can take advantage of our 1 Free Month oF UnliMited yogA. I am sure if you come in, you will fall in love with yoga and see why our slogan is Healthy Body Quiet Mind. Come by and meet our instructors during our GRAND OPENING on January 17th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Sunrise Residents Enjoy Shopping for Handmade Items At Annual Arts Festival BY JILL SHARPE
T
he word ‘Woodstock ’ may conjure up thoughts of the
massive 1969 music festival or even Snoopy’s feathered friend from the Peanuts comic strip. Around Sunrise, though, Woodstock refers to the most-anticipated event of the winter holiday season. The 34th Annual Woodstock Arts and Crafts Festival took place on December 6th and 7th in Welleby Park. Organizers were expecting nearly 7,000 people to come through the doors and peruse the nearly 150 vendors on site selling handmade crafts and food. Patrons were asked to either pay an entrance fee or bring canned food to donate to LifeNet4Families and the City of Sunrise’s Crisis Closet food pantry. Nearly 11 tons of food are donated by attendees to the festival every year. That combination of supporting local artisans while helping good causes is often what drives the people running the festival. “The event began as a local flea market for the 600 or so homeowners in the Woodstock neighborhood, but it’s grown to become really successful over the years,” said Penni Rivas, the event’s Registrar. “Vendors will often want to register for the upcoming fair as soon as one has ended. We’re the bestorganized festival. We provide free booths for non-profit agencies, and we love doing it. We have volunteers here who started volunteering when they were children and they’re still with us helping out.” The Woodstock Arts and Crafts Festival has become known for showcasing locally-made, one of a kind items that can’t be found anywhere else. Julie Henson of Sunrise set up a booth to sell her handmade jewelry, infinity scarves, and banners under her JA Henson Designs business. “People had been asking me if I would be at this show, which really sparked my interest,” said Henson. “I’m excited to be here. It’s fun to just look around, and I can’t wait to get some kettle korn.” Festival organizers made sure that there was plenty of entertainment on hand for when people needed a break from their holiday shopping. The THX Chorus of Sunrise, Welleby’s Got Talent (from Welleby Elementary School), Zumbatomic, the West Pines Middle School Glee Club, Dance FX, the CCC Dance Worship Team, Evolution Martial Arts, and the South Florida Cloggers all took turns on the main stage. Many of the people enjoying the musical and dance performances were doing so while taking advantage of a variety of food options. In addition to the standard festival delicacies, unusual offerings like Hungarian walnut rolls, chimney cake, and shrimp-on-a-stick could be found. Santa Claus walked around the dining area taking pictures with the children while the Piper High School Marching Band worked their way through the crowd playing a medley of modern and old school jams. No matter what reason people had for coming to the festival, the event has become a staple on the calendar for many people living in western Broward County. “It’s our tradition to be here. We’ve been coming for the last eight years,” said Jillian Berg of Sunrise, who was shopping with her friend Amy Finkelstein. “Our favorite part is the food, like the cinnamon logs, but it’s also a great place for finding gifts.” Roni Graham has been volunteering at the festival since it began and echoed those sentiments. “My favorite part is being able to know that the time I give is for a worthwhile cause,” said Graham. “It’s fun. I love to shop, and it gets me out of the mall.” The holiday season also can often lead people to think about the less fortunate, and there were many service providers on hand to educate festival attendees on a wide range of issues. Agencies like Abandoned Pet Rescue and Beyond Nine Cat Rescue brought along some furry friends to highlight the importance of pet adoption. Representatives from the non-profit Teen Challenge agency directed the parking lot and kitchen. “Any and all food collected here will help us fulfill our mission to curb hunger in Broward County,” said Chris Polzer, Director of Operations for LifeNet4Families,. “We don’t receive any government money so we rely on private donations from events like this to help us provide services like our soup kitchen and food pantry.” For more information on the Woodstock Arts and Crafts Festival, visit http://www.woodstockartsfest.com/.

Nearly 70 golfers participated raising over $10,000 for the Broward Fire Chiefs Foundation and the American Red Cross. Sunrise Fire Chief Thomas DiBernardo took the lead in organizing the event. Corporate sponsors included Hallmark (Dealer for E-One Fire Apparatus and Horton Ambulance), Intermedix, Metro Broward Professional Fire Fighters Local 3080, Sunrise Fire Rescue Benevolent Association, Lauderhill Fire Rescue Benevolent Association, Target Solutions, Hero Solutions, and numerous financial institutions associated with the fire service. Additional support was provided by local business such as Home Depot, The Florida Panthers, Grand Lux, Bahama Breeze, Springtree Golf and Country Club and Bonaventure Golf and Country Club who generously donated the prizes that were awarded for
closet to the pin, longest drive, straightest drive, putting contest and many others. A great surprise was found at Hole #5, which hosted a different kind of fun for all who participated. For a small donation golfers were given a chance to shoot a golf ball from an air riffle that carried the full 400 yard distance over water to the green in an effort to shoot an eagle. “At the close of the tournament, there was a special moment in memory of Ed Curran”, Fire Chief of Lauderhill Fire-Rescue who recently passed from illness, “It was voted unanimously to rename the tournament, the Fire Chief Ed Curran Memorial Golf Tournament” said Chief DiBernardo FCABC supports many things throughout the year. They provide an annual three day EMS conference that provides continuing education for paramedics. The Association also provides a scholarship for eligible students from around the country to complete their education in the Fire Service. Lastly the FCABC supports the CERT program as well as the Canteen program which is called upon to provide rehabilita-
tion services to the community fire-fighters during larger incidents. Both of these programs are staffed by volunteers and can respond twenty-four hours a day seven days a week. The main purpose of the FCABC is to research and monitor the latest trends in Fire, EMS, and Emergency Management. In doing so it enables the Association to adopt policy that all of its partners adopt making Broward one of the leaders in the nation in providing Fire, EMS and Emergency Management to the community. The Fire Chiefs Association of Broward extended their sincere thanks to all who played or participated and especially thanked the corporate sponsors for their continued support to the association. The Association is already starting to plan next year’s event which is open to all who would like to play. Information will be posted on the FCABC website www.fcabc.com as dates and location become available along with instruction on how to register as the date approaches.

to Hailey Price of Northeast High, and third place was awarded to Kiona Davis of Dillard High. The twelve teens who competed were chosen from an audition pool of 22. After acing their try-out on October 2nd, they participated in a series of free writing and performance workshops with Darius “Mr. D” Daughtry, Director of Poetry Programs for the bluapple Poetry Network. Daughtry also served as the Word Up! emcee. Williams performed three poems. The first one was called “She Said She Liked The Way I Perform My Poetry”, the second one was called “Changes” and the third one was “My Biggest Fear”. Williams said his biggest fear is to end of doing something in life that he isn’t passionate about. For that reason, the Piper High School senior has plans to study Broadcast Journalism and Theater in college. “I believe that if you love something you’ll be able to make money doing it,” said Williams. “I don’t want a job, I want a career.” It would seem that Williams will achieve those dreams as he has proved his talent before, winning the district wide poetry slam in April. The most recent Word Up! win was personally gratifying, however as he did not win Word Up! last year.

“I’m glad I could achieve this personal victory but honestly what I like best about the poetry slam is not the competition,” he said. “What I really love is sharing the art,” Williams said. “Getting to know the other poets is really cool too as there is nothing better than being with a group of people who all love the same thing.” Daughtry concurred with Williams and said his favorite part of the slam is the collaborative pieces that aren’t judged. “The students work in groups to put together these pieces and the process builds a family type of atmosphere which is really great,” he said. According to Daughtry, Word Up! is most valuable because it gives student’s the opportunity to express themselves and to learn about themselves, their performance and their craft. Students say it’s not really important if they win or lose, it’s the experience that’s worth everything. “That speaks volumes for the program,” said Daughtry.

start of a terrific new season of outdoor events. There’s no better time to enjoy our beautiful weather, along with the company of family and friends. And, since all of the events mentioned here offer free admission, you don’t have to break any budget resolutions to join in the fun. First up this month is a new event that’s guaranteed to bring back as many great memories as it creates: On Friday, January 9, we’re hosting a Drive-In Movie in the east parking lot of the BB&T Center. There will be a seating section up front, as well as rows of room for cars. Audio will be broadcast by radio frequency. We’ll start by playing classic cartoons like “Fractured Fairy Tales” and “Rocky and Bullwinkle,” and then follow up with a 7:00 p.m. screening of the 2014 hit “Mr. Peabody & Sherman.” Of course, a series of Outdoor Movies will also take place at the Sunrise Civic Center. We’ll show “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” on Friday, February 6, and “Penguins of Madagascar” on Friday, March 13 – each at 7:30 p.m. The Sunrise Civic Center will also host the return of our popular Tunes ‘N Trucks Concerts, with a series of Friday-night performances from January through May. Help us kick off this great event on January 16, when The Boss Project – a tribute to Bruce Springsteen – takes the Amphitheater stage. Of course, we’ll have a great selection of food trucks on hand to keep everyone well fed. This month Sunrise is also showcasing visual and performance art by teens, for teens: On Friday, January 23, we’re pairing our popular Lyrical Lounge Teen Open Mic Night with an opening reception for On the Edge, a juried art show featuring the work of high school students throughout Broward County. Students in Sunrise Schools Take On London, UK, Students in Chess BY JILL SHARPE
O
18
Broward County history, students from two Sunrise public schools participated in an event as part of the London Chess Classic, a major international chess tournament held in London, UK. However, the students from Sawgrass Elementary and Sandpiper Elementary were not jet lagged and they did not have to fundraise to fly to this international friendly event. In collaboration with the United States-based National Scholastic Chess Foundation and the United Kingdom-based Chess in Schools and Communities, students from schools in the United Kingdom and Sunrise, Florida, were linked electronically to participate in friendly games of chess. The event was the collaborative idea of Mayor Mike Ryan of Sunrise, Florida; Malcolm Pein from Chess in Schools and Communities, UK (“CSC”); Sunil Weeramantry, Executive Director of the National Scholastic Chess Foundation (“NSCF”); and the principals from the Sunrise schools. “While I was researching how other countries work to expand scholastic chess, I came across the great work of Chess in Schools and Communities in London,” explained Mayor Ryan. “I realized so much of the CSC mission, aimed at training community volunteers, parents and teachers to expand scholastic chess throughout the community, was similar to the mission of the National Scholastic Chess Foundation
Foundation’s “Next Move” program and worldrenowned chess coach, instructor and author. “Building upon the enthusiasm in Broward County and with the assistance of the Broward Education Foundation, we have launched the “Next Move” program which provides free training sessions for teachers, parents and community volunteers intended to expand the number of classrooms introducing chess as well as the quality of chess mentors in the community.” According to a landmark 2000 study published in the journal “Research in the Schools,” students who received chess instruction scored significantly higher on all measures of academic achievement, including math, spatial analysis, and non-verbal reasoning ability. Chess in the curriculum is not new internationally. In the UK chess in the classroom is a powerful tool for students to develop necessary critical thinking skills, higher levels of reasoning, problem-solving ability and improved concentration.
who had been providing assistance here in Broward County.” This year has seen an astonishing growth in scholastic chess in Broward County, Florida. Last school year, in collaboration with the America’s Foundation for Chess “First Move” program and the City of Sunrise, a pilot program was launched to provide chess education as part of the curriculum in Sunrise public schools’ 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms. The program was so successful that the “First Move” program has now expanded to provide chess in the curriculum for every 2nd and 3rd grader in Broward County public schools, resulting in over 30,000 Broward County public school students learning chess in the classroom. “Our mission is to expand scholastic chess by focusing on the academic benefits of chess in the classroom and community,” said Sunil Weeramantry, Executive Director of the National Scholastic Chess
The ties between the London Chess Classic and Sunrise, Florida, extend beyond the students from Sawgrass Elementary and Sandpiper Elementary participating in the event. American chess Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamaru – currently ranked #1 in the US and #7 in the world – calls Sunrise, Florida, home and competed in the London Chess Classic.. “This is a unique opportunity for our students to link internationally with other students through chess and the schools,” explained Mayor Mike Ryan. “I know these students will develop lasting memories from this event. I am also confident the relationship between the National Scholastic Chess Foundation, Chess in the Schools and Community, the Broward Education Foundation, our schools and the City of Sunrise will expand even further to collaborate on the best methods to bring the benefits of scholastic chess to all students.”

appy N ew Year! A s we begin 2015, many of us
choose to make resolutions to improve ourselves and our lives over the course of this New Year. Common New Year’s resolutions are to lose weight, stop smoking, or get more organized. Not many of us, however, will resolve to make or revisit an estate plan. While it may not be as glamorous – or as comfortable to think about – as some other New Year’s resolutions, I’m here to tell you that it should be at the top of your resolutions list this year! There are many reasons that people shy away from estate planning. Some find it too grim, while others think that they don’t have an “estate” that requires planning. Often, when people hear the words “estate planning,” they conjure mental images of vast country manors, wealthy society matrons, or inheritances worth millions of dollars, and quickly reach the conclusion that estate planning is “not for me.” I get it! But the reality is that an “estate” simply consists of all of the things you own when you die, including: your home, investments, bank accounts, retirement plans, business interests, and even personal property such as furniture and jewelry.

Estate planning involves very real issues that matter to everyone. For example, I’d like for you to consider the following questions: Who will make medical decisions for you in the event of your incapacity? Who will inherit your property when you die? Who will make sure that the people (and pets!) that are most important to you get the things you want them to get? Without an estate plan, the answers to some of these questions might not be what you think – or want. The fact is that one day these questions will need answering, and a small effort to resolve them now can protect you and those you love from potentially divisive and expensive legal problems in the future. As important as it is to create an estate plan, it is also important to ensure that your estate plan is up-to-date and well-maintained. This is critical, because the circumstances under which you originally created the plan may have changed. For example, look back on 2014 for a moment. Did you welcome a new family member? Did you lose one? Has your health or the health of someone close to you changed significantly? Did you purchase a new home, start a new business, or make new investments? If the answer to any of these questions is “yes,” it may be a good idea to review your estate plan to ensure that it will accomplish your goals. These are just some of the reasons that creating (or maintaining) an estate plan should be on the top of your list of New Year’s resolutions, but there are many others. Working with an experienced attorney will help you to navigate the many issues involved and will ensure that the plan accomplishes your vision and goals. Madeleine Q. Dental Retainers- Whats the Difference?
Pest Control & Termite Professionals Home · Business · Commercial
By Dr. Michael Maruri
I
t ’ s the big day and your braces are finally com -
ing off! Does that mean you are completely done? Not so fast! After you complete your treatment here, your orthodontist will recommend you wear a retainer. This must be worn routinely after treatment in order to hold your teeth in their proper, new position, while your gums, ligaments and bones adapt. Most patients are required to wear their retainer every night at first, with many also being directed to wear them during the day. It’s important to know there are different kinds of retainers.
Here are the differences between them:
▸▸ Hawley Retainers. The Hawley
retainer is one of the most common types of retainers. It is a removable retainer made of a combination of a metal wire that typically surrounds the six anterior (front) teeth and is designed to keep your teeth in place. This retainer is made from impressions of your teeth so that it fits snugly and comfortably in the roof of your mouth, while the wire and acrylic framing keeps your teeth in an ideal position. The acrylic can also be personalized with a large number of colors or patterns.
▸▸ Essix (Clear) Retainers. The
Essix retainer is a transparent removable retainer that fits over the entire arch of your teeth. This clear or transparent retainer fits over the entire arch of teeth and is produced from a mold. Similar to Invisalign’s clear aligner trays, Essix retainers have no metal or wires. They can also be used to produce minor tooth movements and can be helpful in prevention of tooth wear due to tooth grinding at night.

▸▸ Bonded (Lingual) Retainers. The
Lingual retainer is placed on the back sides of your teeth, so no one will ever know it is there! Lingual retainers are also permanent, so there’s no risk of losing them. As with removable retainers, it is important to keep your bonded retainers clean. When brushing, make sure to carefully clean the inside of your lower teeth, as well as the wire itself.
The retention phase of treatment begins when the patient’s braces are removed. Retainers are worn full time, initially (except while eating), then eventually just at night time when the bite is stable. Retainers should also be removed before brushing your teeth. Remember, wearing your retainer is an investment in your smile. If you fail to wear it consistently, the tissues that support your teeth will be unsupported, and you may begin to experience noticeable shifting. You’ve worked hard to get that beautiful smile — your retainer will let you keep it! If you have any questions about the retainers we offer or to learn more about post-orthodontic treatment, call Plantation Orthodontist Dr. Michael Maruri at 954-473-6900 for your free consultation. After school and weekend appointments are conveniently available. The office is located behind the Fountains Shoppes at 815 S University Dr., Suite 100 in Plantation.

After the holidays is a great time to clean the grease and excess food build-up from the inside of the oven. Using these simple rules will help prevent unexpected fires. ▸▸ Never leave your stove top cooking unattended, remain in the kitchen and stay alert. ▸▸ When using the oven never leave the house and keep aware ▸▸ Ovens are made for cooking not storage; a common cause of oven fires is the forgotten items, do not store items in your oven. Dryer Safety Dryer fires are the second leading cause of home fires in Sunrise due to failure to clean them. Most homeowners only clean the lint build up on the removable screen at the front of the dryer. The hidden hazard most commonly overlooked is in the lint build up in the back of the dryer and through the tubing within the walls all the way through the dryer exhaust vent of the house. ▸▸ To ensure no hidden hazard leaves you or your family susceptible to fire: ▸▸ Once a year completely clean the lint out of the dryers vent tubing and exhaust vent or have a dryer vent cleaning service do it for you. ▸▸ Do not use a dryer without a lint filter and clean before and after each load of laundry ▸▸ Rigid or flexible metal venting material should be used to sustain proper air flow and drying time check for restrictions behind the dryer. ▸▸ Keep dryers in good working order. Gas dryers should be inspected by a professional to make sure that the gas line and connection are intact and free of leaks. ▸▸ Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and don’t overload your dryer. ▸▸ Turn the dryer off if you leave home or when you go to bed. Home and Health Safety ▸▸ Remove clutter from your home and walkways and keep the hallways well lit. Falls in the home often occur due to clutter, trip hazards. Wear proper footwear in the home and avoid walking around in socks. ▸▸ Check all medications in your home. If they have expired, bring them to the safe disposal in the lobby of the Public Safety Building located at 10440 W Oakland Park Boulevard. Do not flush them down the toilet, or throw them away in the regular garbage. When storing them please keep out of reach from children. For more information and safety tips, visit the City of Sunrise website at www.sunrisefl.gov . In the event of an emergency, always dial 9-1-1 immediately.

A
n automobile is a major investment. J ust
think about it: In the last 10 years, have you bought anything that costs more than a car? A house or your kid’s education, maybe… Yet, unlike a house, a car is not going to appreciate in value; and unlike an education, an SUV is not going to increase your offspring’s earning potential. A car isn’t an investment after all, because you’re not going to receive a return on it. It’s an expense, and the best you can do is to get the maximum use and pleasure from the money you spend. Getting the most out of your car is a matter of careful maintenance. Getting the most out of your money is a matter of getting a good price on the car and a good deal on the related financing. Negotiating a good price on your car can be stressful, but arranging for a good deal on your loan might not have to be. When they think of car loans, most people think of banks and dealer financing—but your credit union may offer the best, most flexible terms and the fastest loan process that’s available to you: ▸▸ Before you go shopping, come to your credit union to get pre-approved for a loan. Pre-approval will mean you have one less thing to worry about when you find the vehicle you want. ▸▸ Many credit unions offer “FREE” auto buying service. This service takes the hassle and haggle out of the dreaded car buying experience. ▸▸ The rates that your credit union offers on auto loans are probably lower than those that are offered by most banks and car dealerships in your area. An additional discount on the rate is available if you set up a direct loan payment. Credit unions can offer lower rates because they are notfor-profit so they pass on the savings to their members. ▸▸ Refinancing an existing loan on the car you currently drive could lower your rate and monthly payment, putting more money in your pocket—a good thing at any time, but especially in a troubled economy. ▸▸ Your credit union can help you insure your vehicle for its replacement value in case of total loss, rather than the cash value that is more typical of the policies that are offered by most insurance companies. Credit unions have found the way to take the hassle and haggle out of the car buying experience! Ask your neighborhood credit union about their “Free” car buying service. ne of the most difficult things that
Orthopedic Surgeons have to deal with is what to do with the knee that has irreversible cartilage damage. The knee joint, specifically the undersurface of the patella, the end of the femur and the top of the tibia are covered by a substance we call articular cartilage. This looks and functions like the carpet that is covering the floor in your house. It is a smooth cushioned surface that helps the knee joint move in a frictionless environment. Without healthy articular cartilage, the knee joint can not function properly. Exposed bone in the knee joint by deficient, inefficient cartilage leads to arthritis, pain and disability. Patients present to the office stating that they injured the knee joint. They complain of swelling, pain going up and down stairs, getting out of the car, changing directions, unable to run or jog without pain. The injury is usually after an event that the patient can recall without any problems. The Orthopedic Surgeon gets some simple X-Rays in the office and usually they are normal. You see, articular cartilage does not show up in X-rays. After a thorough physical exam the initial treatment usually consists of ice, rest, anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy. However, if the initial physical exam demonstrates severe findings and/or the symptoms persist or they do not get resolved, then the patient will need to get an MRI Scan to check for articular cartilage problems. The MRI Scan is the diagnostic study of choice in the detection of articular cartilage damage (bottom photo), meniscus tears and ligament injuries. If the patient has an articular cartilage defect (bottom photo) this is considered to be a permanent problem for the knee joint. This leads to abnormal friction forces, inflammation, pain and eventual destruction of the rest of the knee joint. Classically, patients who continued to have problems eventually developed arthritis and require a total knee replacement. Today, with advances in science, we can offer patients alternatives to try to salvage the knee joint. This consists of procedures that can be done through small incisions in the knee joint (Arthroscopic Surgery). The arthroscope is the instrument that has allowed us to manage this issue through small incisions. We can do a chondrolasty with shaving, chondroplasty micro fracture or bone drilling or bone picking. The chondroplasty is stimulating your cartilage, stimulating your body to make new cartilage in the defective area. The recovery from this type of surgery usually requires the patient to use crutches for one month and in most cases the patient returns to full unrestricted sports activities in six to nine months from the day of the surgery. Other patients can have a transplant of cartilage (top photo). This is usually reserved for those patients who failed to heal with the chondroplasty and have a focal well circumscribe defect in the articular cartilage. The surgery is also done through mini incisions, usually two or three. The rehabilitation consists of crutches for four to six weeks and range of motion exercises. After this healing period, the patient returns to activities of daily living and finally to sports within six to nine months from the day of the surgery. Dr. Moya is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in knee and shoulder surgery. He completed his doctoral fellowship at Harvard University, receiving his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Robert Wood Johnson Medical School). Dr. Moya completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Puerto Rico. He practices at the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine located in Weston at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, (954) 389-5900, and in Pembroke Pines at 17842 NW 2nd Street, (954) 430-9901. Broward County- An Even Better Place to Call Our Home
“Reese”

incredible results in 2014 that have made our community a better and safer place to live, work and visit. Crime rates are sharply down in the parts of Broward County policed by BSO. In 2013, we saw a 10% drop in overall crime. In 2014, crime dropped an additional 8%. This means that in two years, we’ve seen nearly a one-fifth drop in crime rates, which is huge! In this time period, we have helped bring about the lowest crime rate in South Florida in many decades. These results directly reflect the amazing work being performed daily by the dedicated men and women of BSO. Last year, BSO launched the V.I.P.E.R. unit to target the most dangerous violent criminals in Broward – and we saw a large drop in violent crime rates. This year, BSO added another innovative specialized unit: the Burglary Apprehension Team (BAT). The BAT combats residential burglaries in Broward, using a combination of reliable “old school” police detective work on the ground coupled with high-tech, computerized, predictive crime modeling intelligence. This combination has proven highly effective, helping to reduce residential burglaries agencywide in 2014 by 30%.
Reese is a seven-year-old Chocolate Labrador. Her favorite person is her daddy and she can usually be found not far from his side. Her favorite toy is a rope because she loves to play tug-of-war. Reese likes to play catch in her backyard and, although she doesn’t dislike much, she is not a fan of getting her face cleaned. She was last seen lying on her mama’s rug watching the Miami Dolphins win.

Our Civil Citation Program, aimed at keeping kids out of jail and in the classroom, has been aided by the new PROMISE Program partnership between BSO, various police agencies, the State Attorney’s Office and the Broward County School Board. The objective of the PROMISE Program is to end the “schoolhouseto-jailhouse” pipeline by offering in-school alternatives to arrests and suspensions. In 2014, juvenile arrests were down 16%, due in part to these innovative programs. BSO also launched the innovative Driveway Initiative last year, where neighbors come together in informal settings with law enforcement to exchange ideas, concerns and solutions. The Driveway Initiative is about applying different strategies to reduce crime and fostering stronger relationships with the communities we serve. It helps find local solutions to local problems. This year, I hope to expand these initiatives to help recapture an era when residents and businesses had strong, positive relationships with their neighbors and with their local law enforcement officers. Finally, we have worked to advance our Uniting Broward community initiative. BSO held a community conference and an outdoor festival to promote diversity, safety and security. These events were exciting new opportunities for law enforcement and residents to listen, understand and build connections. Understanding and embracing Broward’s vibrant diversity promotes better public safety. When we make an effort to become familiar with the things that make us different, we are safer and smarter as a result. By working together, we can make Broward County an even better place to call our home. I am looking forward to 2015 and continuing the successful work of this agency. My warmest wishes to each of you and your family for a happy, healthy and safe new year! For information, visit www.sheriff.org.
