Take Stock in What is Important this New Year BY CHRISTY & TERRY JAILLET

I

n 1961 President John F. Kennedy delivered a speech before the Canadian Parliament in which he uttered the famous line, “What unites us is greater than what divides us!” With today’s political rhetoric and constant conflict on social media, perhaps those words have never rang truer. No matter what side of the spectrum you fall, we can all take great pride in knowing that together we can overcome anything – just think back to the dark days following 9-11. The New Year is a time for us to take stock in our place in the world and recognize that we truly are in this together. People are more reliant on one another today than at any time in history. The food we eat comes from all over the world. And, while we are globally connected through the internet, your iPhone or laptop was designed in California and assembled in China with a microprocessor fabricated in Korea made from materials mined in Australia and Africa. The magazine you are reading right now was printed in Jacksonville with ink from Japan on paper made from Canadian wood. The words, articles and ads, however, all come from the tireless efforts of our team right here in South Florida! Our ability to live, cooperate and work together, even with those we don’t agree with, has made our lives inarguably better. We think this willingness to focus on common goals is what has made America so successful over the past 200 years. So, as we enter into 2020 and the upcoming Presidential Election, let’s remember President Kennedy’s words, seeking the good in people and looking for the common ground that unites us all as Americans.

ith Census 2020 now just a couple of months away, the City of Weston is stepping up its efforts to ensure everyone counts. City officials, community leaders and even your friends and neighbors will be promoting participation by every household in our community. The U.S. Constitution requires a population count of everyone living in the country every ten years. It is critical that every person, regardless of age, is counted because census data is used to determine how more than $700 billion in Federal funds is distributed. Weston needs its fair share because that money will be used to provide new schools to ease overcrowding, improve roadways and mass transit to ease traffic congestion, provide affordable housing for seniors and offer first-time homebuyer assistance, provide access to quality health care, support early childhood and special education programs, and provide disaster recovery assistance following a hurricane or other declared disaster. “Funding is attached to each person counted,” explains Director of Communications Denise Barrett-Miller. “An undercount in the 2010 Census cost Broward County approximately $2.1 million per year or $210,970,000 over the past decade.” Barrett-Miller says it is important to count every

member of the household in the census, including babies and children. “For some reason children under the age of five are the most undercounted group, but they do benefit from the funding that is distributed in the form of VPK, school lunch programs, CHIP program and host of other essential services.” She also reminds residents to count children who are attending college and live at home; if the student resides at college in another state, they should be counted there. Participating in the census is simple. For the first time ever, the census will be offered online. In March, all households in Weston will receive a card in the mail with instructions on how to complete the census. If you do not wish to respond online, you can call a toll-free number and answer over the phone with assistance in 12 languages or you can request a paper form be mailed to you. Whatever method you choose, be sure to respond by April 1st, which is Census Day. After that date, the U.S. Census Bureau will send a Census Bureau employee to your house to complete the census count. It’s also important to understand that census participation is safe. Your responses are confidential and protected by law. Your private information is never published, and your answers can not be used against you by any government agency or court.

Everyone Counts in Census 2020

The answers you provide are used only to produce statistics. To help ensure every Weston resident is counted, the City is inviting interested individuals to join its Complete Count Committee as a Census Ambassador. Barrett-Miller says the City will provide all the information you need to know about the Census and all you need to do is go about your daily life and tell your friends and neighbors to complete their census questionnaire. “Just learning about the census and spreading the message through word of mouth is extremely helpful,” she stated. “It’s really about ensuring everyone is counted.” To learn more about Census 2020 go to www.WestonFl.org/ census2020. Click on the “Get Involved” tab or call 954-385-2002 to join the Complete Count Committee.

undle up because snow is in the forecast. Florida-style flurries will fall on Tequesta Trace Park during the Weston Winter Safety Expo on Friday, January 24th. The winter wonderland is a fun-filled and educational experience for all. Presented by the City of Weston and the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the Winter Safety Expo is an opportunity to promote public safety. “This event is an educational evening featuring multiple Law Enforcement and Fire Rescue/EMS agencies that promote different levels of safety,” explains Weston BSO Deputy Danielle Quinones. “It is important to promote public safety because it reduces and prevents the number of crimes and injuries, and improves and increases the well-being of the community.” BSO will be out in full force, showcasing its impressive fleet of vehicles and emergency equipment. Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Department will have the most advanced firefighting equipment and technology on display. Additionally, Deputy Quinones says attendees will get to see a BSO airboat,

helicopter, crime scene truck, bomb squad truck, SWAT truck, motorcycles, and more. “Most of the BSO vehicles are open for the public to view and crawl in and out of,” she states. “The bomb squad robot will be on display, the BSO Crime Scene Truck will be open for the public to view its working space, and the BSO drone will be flying above.” In addition to BSO, Miami Dade Police, Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), U.S. Postal Inspector, DEA, ICE and ATF will participate, along with branches of the military: Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force and Border Patrol. For many younger guests, the excitement of seeing the impressive tactical equipment up close and personal is often overshadowed by the opportunity to meet animals from the BSO K9 unit, including a search and rescue dog. In past years, FWC has brought a baby alligator and a turtle for people to touch. The night is all about safety and

Climb Aboard the New G

etting to and from Miami is about to get easier and faster thanks to the new 75 Express Bus. It provides direct service from the park and ride lots at the BB&T Center in Sunrise and Miami Gardens Drive (@ I-75) to the Miami Airport Station, where you can transfer to local rail or bus to destinations throughout MiamiDade County. The new premium bus service begins on January 13th and for the first five days, all riders ride free.

The 75 Express Bus is funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and operated by Broward County Transit. It builds upon the success of the 95 Express Bus and 595 Express Bus services, which continually receive rave reviews. Riders who use those bus services rate them satisfactory or above satisfactory. “Express buses have proven to be very successful in South Florida which says a lot about the type of service they provide because typically we are looked at as a location where people love their cars,” states South Florida Commuter Services Director Jeremy Mullings. Fast, Comfortable, Convenient The Express Buses are used primarily by riders who own their own cars, but welcome the convenience, comfort and cost savings of commuting in the coach-style buses. One-way fares on the 75 Express Bus are available for as little as $1.30 and monthly passes cost less than $100. The 75 Express Bus will offer free Wi-Fi, air-conditioned comfort, comfortable seating and will travel in the express lanes for faster more reliable travel times. Service will be provided every 30 minutes during the peak morning and afternoon commute times. Commuters can take comfort in knowing that life’s little emergencies are not an issue

thanks to FDOT’s Guaranteed Ride Home program. This government-funded program will cover the cost of Lyft or taxi rides home if the Express Bus is unavailable and you need to leave work early for an emergency or have to stay late for unscheduled overtime. County quickly and reliably. Morning service begins as early as 5:40 am with continual buses running until 9:40 am. The afternoon commute begins at 3:45 pm, with the last bus leaving the Miami Airport Station at 7:20 pm and scheduled to arrive at the BB&T Center by 8:24 pm. Broward County Transit Senior Planner Tara Crawford says, “The 75 Express Bus gives you a comfortable, stress-free and easy connection to the Miami International Airport via

the Miami Airport Station, with connections to the Civic Center and Downtown Miami/Brickell.” Transfers via Miami Dade Transit buses and Metro Rail trains make it easy to get around the Miami metro area. The Express Bus system is a core component of the express lanes along I-75, I-595, and I-95. The express lanes are multi-modal facilities designed to reduce traffic congestion and promote choices in how and when residents commute.

ig hair and bigger smiles could be found at Weston Regional Park when The Pixels – Retro Eighties Experience kicked off the fifth season of the WestonNights Outdoor Concert Series. People came dressed in eighties attire to enjoy a night of good music and good company. “A picturesque, chilly evening accompanied by great music drew a crowd of about 2,000 people,” estimates Special Events Manager Annalisa Walker. It was a blast from the past as The Pixels performed a variety of hits from the eighties including Thriller, Get Into the Groove, Material Girl, Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), Another One Bites the Dust,

Don’t Stop Believin’, Jessie’s Girl, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Walk Like an Egyptian, and Sweet Child O’ Mine. Walker believes the familiarity of the songs is what makes concerts such as this so popular. “Whether you are seeking a family-friendly atmosphere or an adult night out, the WestonNights concerts provide a fun evening for all in attendance. What better way to enjoy high quality music, great company – whether that be friends or family – and delicious food all in a free outdoor venue. Many concertgoers set up picnic areas or take advantage of the variety of food trucks available at each event.” When selecting bands for the WestonNights Concert Series, Walker says the City of Weston looks for different genres, tribute bands and those that

offer a fusion of music. “We look for bands that will appeal to a large-scale audience who will engage the crowd and provide high-energy music.” That’s exactly what The Pixels – Retro Eighties Experience did, with an energetic audience up on their feet singing and dancing the night way. The WestonNights Outdoor Concert Series continues on February 8th and March 14th. As of press time, the February concert band had not been finalized, but The Shane Duncan Band will take the stage in March with a selection of country, rock and top 40’s music. All concerts take place from 7-10pm at the event stage in Weston Regional Park. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets to sit back and enjoy the show. Coolers are welcome, but alcohol is not permitted. For more information on the WestonNights Outdoor Concert Series go to www.WestonFl.org/Events.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

New Beginnings BY DANIEL J. STERMER, MAYOR, CITY OF WESTON

I

ncredibly, another New Year has been ushered in. With each New Year comes a renewed sense of spirit, hope, commitment and change. In Weston, we are continuously spearheading change in the way of capital projects, but this year something else is different. We didn’t realize the theme to our annual budget would be so profound when former City Manager John Flint came up with the tag line “Prepared for the Next Generation.” Well, that is just what he had been putting in place for years and now ringing in the New Year Weston’s new City Manager is at the helm. Don Decker is steering the ship with his vision and leadership style into our future. In preparing for the future and the next generation, Weston has made investments in technology which are critical to keeping pace with emerging trends, citizen engagement, online applications and, importantly, cyber security. In doing so, we not only helped ourselves and our community, but we were also recognized nationally by receiving The Center for Digital Government’s Digital Cities Survey 2019 first-place award for cities with populations up to 75,000. Events Galore With the winter in Weston comes a host of City events and programs that we encourage you and your family to enjoy. The 2019 Weston Winter Safety Expo will be held on Friday, January 24th from 6-8:30PM. Once again, a unique phenomenon takes place within the confines of Weston’s Tequesta Trace Park… SNOW! And it snows to some great music and entertainment as well. On this night, the Broward Sheriff’s Office and a host of agencies bring out “all the big toys”. On display are law enforcement, fire rescue and EMS vehicles of all kinds; there are kids’ activities including ice skating, informational booths and displays and a whole lot of FUN. This is a community event not to be missed. I can only summarize the extensive list of upcoming events. Don’t miss the next two free WestonNights Concerts in the Park on February 8th and March 14th both at 7PM in Regional Park. Our incredibly popular free monthly Moonlight Movies in the Park series continues through April; Free Symphony of the Americas Pops concert on March 8th; the Foreign Film Series; free professional puppet shows and magic shows at the Weston Community Center; Celebrate the Arts Day in Weston Town Center; the Weston WorldFest; the annual Royal Egg Hunt; the Mayors’ Chess Challenge and so much more. This list is reflective of the great work of the Arts Council of Greater Weston, in partnership with the City, whose members volunteer their time to bring arts programming to residents. CENSUS 2020 | Everyone Counts in Weston Lastly, you are going to see more and more information in and around our community about the upcoming 2020 Census. It is a count of everyone living in the United States as of April 1, 2020. It’s easy, safe and important and we need your help. Responding to the census ensures our community gets its fair share of funding. Census data guide how more than $700 billion in federal funding is distributed to states, counties and communities each year for the next ten years. You Count!! Please watch for our information and urge everyone you know to complete their census questionnaire when it comes in mid-March, or before April 1, 2020. For more information visit WestonFL.org/Census2020 or Census.gov. Details of all City events can be found on our website Events Calendar at WestonFL.org/Events and in our Newsday Tuesday e-Newsletter. Mayor Stermer can be contacted via email at dstermer@westonfl.org or at 954-385-2000.

ould you run your beloved car low on oil, coolant, or transmission fluid? Obviously not! Then, why are you engaging in an amateur or professional sport without checking under your hood for hormones, micronutrients, and cellular nutrition levels? If you are neglecting this, as opposed to your car, you will experience physical pain, emotional performance frustration and in the worst-case scenario physical injury. Accomplishing any athletic goal or remaining at the top (especially after age 40) requires a unique competitive advantage. The role of micronutrients and hormones is often overlooked but they are essential to give your cells a quantum leap forward to improve athletic focus, strength, endurance, and recovery – the hallmarks of an exceptional athlete! Our team at Bellissimo Medical specializes in functional medicine with an emphasis in Bio-identical hormones replacement therapy, high-quality medical-grade supplements as well as specialized tests to measure levels of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, metabolism, metabolites, antioxidant function, and immune response. Aside from the obvious and well-known vitamins B, D, E, C, etc., there are other crucial examples of sports nutrition elements essential for optimal performance. Asparagine: Increases the capacity of muscle to use fatty acids and spare glycogen, thus increasing time to physical exhaustion. Serine: Increases aerobic capacity and keeps a healthy hormone profile by buffering post-workout cortisol levels, which can cause excess muscle breakdown. Magnesium: Is key to the production of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) which is the body’s main storage form of energy. This element improves aerobic performance, muscle strength, and repair. Zinc: Interacts with hormones to improve body composition and strength. Deficiency impairs peak oxygen uptake during exercise (Supplementation should be accompanied by copper). All sports activities should be complemented by optimal nutrition to spark and enable optimal performance, avoid injury and conquer your set goals. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954.384.8989. Weston Music Society Welcomes Talented Young Musicians BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he Weston Music Society kicked off its season with a special concert program thanking members for their support. The member appreciation event featured performances by many talented young musicians from our community. The featured performer was pianist and composer Jose Veliz. The 2015 Weston Music Society Scholarship recipient is a graduate of the prestigious Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. Jose is currently the keyboardist for the two-time Emmy Award-winning group 8 Bit Wave. During the event, Jose delighted patrons with a variety of popular songs, such as Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, along with some of his own compositions. His performance was followed by a revue starring members of The Rising Starz Academy. Its students had the privilege of performing at the “Live the Dream” New York City Broadway Cabaret last summer and will perform aboard Royal Caribbean Cruise Line’s Navigator of the Seas next month. Each of the 16 performers wowed the audience with their talent, singing hit songs such as My Girl by The Temptations, Natural Woman by Aretha Franklin, and The Candy Man by Sammy Davis Jr. Weston Music Society (WMS) Vice President of Ways and Means Rose Sklar says the young

performers were impressive. “Their talent is amazing, and our audience was most appreciative of their poise and performances.” Appreciation was the theme of the afternoon. WMS members were treated to a lavish buffet and afternoon of beautiful music hosted by Botaniko Weston. “This is our way of saying a big thank you to our loyal members for their ongoing support,” states WMS President Lou Marett. “Because of them, we are able to award scholarships, bring musicians to the schools, and bring concerts to our community.” Just last month, WMS and the City of Weston presented Cirque de la Symphonie. This cirque-style production featured acrobatic feats choreographed to music by the Symphony of the Americas Orchestra. In March, WMS and the City

will present an Outdoor Symphony Pops Concert at Weston Town Center. During this popular program, the Symphony of the Americas, under the baton of Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese, will play familiar classics, Broadway melodies, and tributes to popular performers. It’s all in fitting with the Weston Music Society’s mission to bring fine music of all genres to Weston and support music education in our local schools. BY DISTRICT FIRE CHIEF TODD DRAIZIN rom our home to yours, the Broward Sheriff’s Office of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services would like to wish you a happy and healthy new year. In addition to the typical resolutions to exercise more and eat healthy, why not consider making your family’s safety a top priority. Please allow me to share some safety thoughts to help you see things through my eyes as Fire Chief. Kitchen Safety Do you have a fire extinguisher? Kitchen fires are the number one cause of house fires. Being prepared to extinguish a small fire can save your and your family’s lives while protecting your treasured possessions. Fire extinguishers have ratings to better guide what type of fires they are best used for, either A, B, or C. There are others but these are the most common. The easiest way to remember what extinguisher to use is if the fire produces an Ash, like that of burning paper or wood, then an “A” class extinguisher is needed and is usually water based. A “B” class fire might make a liquid Boil. Like gasoline or oil, these fires do not react well with water, and water will spread these fires quickly. A grease fire needs to be covered or smothered. Lastly are Class C fires or fires that are Conductive, meaning electrical. These fires need to be extinguished with a powder. Most home store retailers sell extinguishers and to make things easier offer an ABC extinguisher that will work on all three. Keep the extinguisher in easy reach and remember the acronym PASS: pull the safety pin, aim the nozzle to the base of the fire, squeeze the trigger, and sweep back and forth. Now that all the holiday cooking is done, it is a great time to clean the grease and excess food build-up from the inside of the oven. Keep in mind ovens are made for cooking and not storage, and always check inside your oven before you turn it on. When cooking on the stove top, never leave it unattended, remain in the kitchen and stay alert. When using the oven, never leave the house, stay awake and keep aware. Home Safety If you have ever seen a YouTube video of a Christmas tree fire, nothing will motivate you quicker to remove this ornamental centerpiece. Dried-out trees are a fire hazard and should not be left in the home, garage, or placed outside against the house. If you have discovered that the dryer takes longer to dry than it has before, the answer could be the vent is clogged. Lint collects in more than the front trap that you empty after each load. Lint also collects in the tubing behind the dryer and all the way to outside. There are some DIY kits you can purchase to clean the tubing, but the professional service to have this done is inexpensive and you do not face an injury risk of falling off a roof.

ASK THE EXPERT

Dry Eye and Aging BY DR. JANE THERRIEN

D

ry eye is a multifactorial disease impacting the ocular surface. It is diagnosed in approximately 3.2 million U.S. women and 1.7 million U.S. men older than 50 years of age. Dry eye rates increase with age, reaching the highest among women 75-59 years of age and men 80-84 years of age. Among other factors, sensitization of the ocular sensory apparatus which occurs with aging is likely influenced by multiple environmental and genetic factors common to other chronic pain conditions and an important driver of ocular pain and dry eye symptoms with aging. The definition of dry eye is a multifactorial disease of the tears and ocular surface that results in symptoms of discomfort, visual disturbance, and tear film instability with potential damage to the ocular surface. It is accompanied by increased osmolarity of the tear film and inflammation of the ocular surface. Symptoms of dry eye are varied and include various descriptors of ocular pain (burning, aching, tender, sharp, shooting, dryness), visual dysfunction (unstable vision), and tearing. Signs are varied and

can include evidence of aqueous tear deficiency and/ or evaporative dry eye. Patients with dry eye may have various levels of ocular sensory apparatus dysfunction and this dysfunction may explain the discrepancy between symptoms and signs of disease. Data supporting this idea include the fact that many patients diagnosed with dry eye describe features of neuropathic pain, including spontaneous pain, dysesthesias (unpleasant, abnormal sensation such as characterizing ocular pain as hot/burning in nature), hyperalgesia (exaggerated pain response to suprathreshold noxious stimuli such as hypersensitivity to wind) and allodynia (pain in response to normally non-noxious stimuli such as sensitivity to light). These symptoms are likely due to alterations in function of the ocular sensory apparatus, which may loop back and affect the function of the LFU, with subsequent changes in basal and reflex tear secretion. Changes in the lacrimal gland (producer of the aqueous component of tears), meibomian glands (producers of the lipid component) and goblet cells (producers of the mucin component) have all been described with aging. Central nervous system changes are also known to occur with age, with decreased connectivity and network integrity noted in healthy older adults. With regards to the eye, changes in peripheral nerves due to age related envi-

ronmental stress and inflammation may propagate upwards and affect the function of the central aspect of the ocular sensory apparatus. In conclusion, sensitization of the ocular sensory apparatus is likely influenced by multiple environmental and genetic factors common to other chronic pain conditions and is likely an important driver of ocular pain and dry eye symptoms in the elderly but remains an understudied component of dry eye. New technology is needed to functionally access the status of the ocular sensory apparatus and understand the impact of aging on dry eye. This information, combined with ocular surface measurements, will likely improve treatment, with a focus on agents that modulate ocular sensory apparatus function in appropriate individuals. For a consultation or more information, you can reach Dr. Therrien at Weston Family Eyecare, 4472 Weston Road, or call 954888-9393. Young Thespians Take the Stage to Promote Mental Health Awareness BY STACEY BOMSER

F

or more than 20 years, the Weston-based Inside Out Theatre Company has used the performing arts as a tool for personal and social change. Its newest project, Next to Normal & Beyond, brings attention to the issues surrounding mental health, with a series of free educational workshops in addition to a performance of the Tony Award winning musical Next to Normal. “Next to Normal is an extremely popular show about how a suburban family copes with mental illness and loss. We’ve been wanting to produce it for a long time,” shares Robin Braun, Co-Founder and Executive Artistic Director of Inside Out Theatre. “Since using the theatre to address social and community concerns is an important part of our mission, extending the production to include mental health education programs seemed very natural. Mental health can often be a difficult subject to talk about, and we hope this musical will serve not only as entertainment but also as a catalyst to open dialogue on the subject, a means to further education, and provide information and resources for those interested.” Braun believes bringing mental health awareness to the forefront is critical, especially consid-

ering how many young people are affected today. “The statistics are simply overwhelming, and I personally have worked with many young people who struggle with anxiety and depression,” she notes. “According to the National Alliance for Mental Illness, the suicide rate among young people has gone up 30%” In addition to the show, Inside Out Theatre will offer a series of free workshops on suicide prevention, understanding bipolar illness, meditation, mindfulness and Aryuvedic healing. Braun, who holds a Masters of Education in Mental Health and School Counseling and Bachelors of Fine Arts in Theatre/Performance, has long recognized the power theatre and storytelling have to promote positive change. “One of my last jobs as an actress was touring inner-city schools in Chicago with a sexual abuse prevention program done through theatre. It was a very powerful program, able to reach many youth with a very sensitive and difficult subject.” That is exactly what Inside Out Theatre is hoping to do with Next to Normal & Beyond. It is just one of many shows the company has produced addressing important issues facing young people. Braun

embers of BSO Weston Explorers Post 44 demonstrated superior skills during a recent Florida Association of Police Explorers Delegates Training, hosted by the Lakeland Police Department. The Post took home first place in the first ever Physical Agility Team Competition. More than 20 Explorer Posts from across the state gathered for the training exercise. This included explorers from local police departments, county sheriff’s offices, state law enforcement and federal agencies. Weston Explorers Post 44 is part of the BSO Law Enforcement Explorers program. The program offers teens and young adults (14-20 years of age) the opportunity to learn and experience lawful citizenship as they participate side-by-side with law enforcement deputies and civilian personnel in on-going training and community service projects. Through this serious and regimented program, Explorers participate in Law Enforcement Explorer Academy training programs, including, but not limited to: self-defense; patrol procedures; traffic stops; report writing; domestic violence; Florida law; and,

arrest procedures. The Weston Explorers were able to put their knowledge to the test during the Florida Association of Police Explorers Delegates Training. The program allowed Explorers to fine tune their skills through practice exercises in the areas of traffic stops, officer down, building search, active shooter and in-progress crimes. In addition, the Lakeland Police Department offered interactive static displays such as SWAT Robot and Drones. Weston Explorer Post 44 Advisor Deputy Lynn Gariboldi says trainings such as this encourage Explorers to engage with other posts as well as test their skills and knowledge as they come together as a team with a common goal in mind. She congratulates all of the participants for

competing to the best of their abilities with teamwork and integrity. A special shout out to Explorers Santiago Amoretti, Jeremy Hernandez, Daniel Gonzalez and Kyle Montero who took first place in the Physical Agility Team Competition, completing the demanding obstacle course challenge in oneminute 43-seconds. In addition to training exercises, BSO Law Enforcement Explorers participate in a variety of community policing projects including child fingerprinting, school safety seminars and crime prevention programs. Explorers can also assist in various law enforcement details including traffic control and searches. Here in Weston, BSO Weston Explorers Post 44 is very active in the community. Explorers volunteered at the recent BSO Shred-a-Thon event and will participate in the Weston Winter Safety Expo, which takes place on Friday, January 24th at Tequesta Trace Park. Vision Boards for Kids BY IVIS MATEOS appy New Year to our lovely readers. What a great time to take the opportunity to plan and visualize the future with your children now that we begin a new year. Since I was a teenager, I have had a passion for writing down my dreams for the future and setting goals to achieve them. Some experts believe vision boards or Dream Boards empower you and increase achievement as you visualize the manifestation of your dreams. Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich and considered the founder of the Science of Success, said, “Man, alone, has the power to transform his thoughts into physical reality; man, alone, can dream and make his dreams come true.” Creating a Dream Board with your kids is quite fun and easy. It also teaches children about setting goals with aligned action. Achieving their set goals will

help them build self-esteem and the desire to strive for greater things. Just follow these simple steps: Gather a large piece of construction paper or poster board; plenty of magazines, printed materials and even old photographs which you will use to cut and paste on your board; scissors; markers and colorful pens; glitter (to make it sparkly); and glue – and then get to work. Engage in a conversation with your child about their hopes and dreams. It is important to ask your children to be specific and descriptive in order to have a clear vision of their goals. This will encourage them to stay motivated by the board every time they see it. You can use proving questions such as: What do you want to be when you grow up and why? If your child says a firefighter, look for pictures to cut out of fire fighters or things related to a firefighter, such as a fire truck, etc. Then, look for words or create words from the construction paper that describe their goal such as hero or help others. Another good question is: What things would you like to have? If the child says, “I want a puppy”, then cut out a picture of a puppy similar to the kind they want and be specific with your descriptive words, like “brown Labrador” and his name will be “Lucky”, and paste the pictures of the dog with the words. When you are done creating the vision board make sure to hang it in a place where the child can always see it. This will keep them focused and motivated. Don’t forget to have fun throughout the process. I would love to see your creative boards and invite you email me a picture at tinitownweston@gmail.com. I wish you all a wonderful year ahead and encourage you to continue to dream big! Obesity and Diabetes: Twin Epidemics

BY ANDREA BRETAL M.D.

This name was created by Dr.Francine Kaufman, MD word-renewed endocrinologist for her book “Diabesity”. In the United States, an estimated 70% of adults more than 20 years old are overweight or obese. According to statistical forecasts, by 2030, 51% of the US population will have obesity. Obesity and Diabetes type 2 reached epidemic proportions. You can see the picture and the parallel increase on both diseases and how is reaching all states. Diabesity is a key risk factor to develop heart disease including heart attacks or strokes. Diabesity can be defined as a metabolic dysfunction that ranges from mild blood sugar imbalance to full-blown type 2 diabetes. Diabesity includes: • abdominal obesity (i.e. “spare tire” syndrome); • dyslipidemia (low HDL, high LDL and high triglycerides); • high blood pressure; • high blood sugar (fasting above 100 mg/ dL, Hb1Ac above 5.5); • systemic inflammation; and, a tendency to form blood clots.

It affects more than one billion people worldwide, including 100 million Americans and 50% of Americans over 65. Recent statistics suggest that Diabesity may already be the leading cause of chronic disease and death in the world, and its impact is expected to rise dramatically in the next 25 years. As Dr. Kaufman wrote on her book: “We know that lifestyle changes can prevent diabetes. We’ve proven that if people eat right, lose

weight and become physically active, they can halt the progression to full-blown diabetes. I hope you will join me to set a new course, redefine and redirect progress, and stop the ‘diabesity’ epidemic.” - From Diabesity; Francine Kaufman (2006) So the question is, do we really need another diet? o do we really need to change our lifestyles and take responsibility for our own health? I see people coming everyday to my office looking for a real change not just another diet but to turn their life around, tired of taking medications, tired of feeling sick and tired, tired that they clothes don’t fit anymore, tired of losing weight with a diet and then gaining everything back again. Together as a community we are able to turn this epidemic around, join me in this path of changing people’s lives and break free of disease. Please share this article to help create awareness to someone you love. Dr. Andrea Bretal, M.D. is the founder of Weston Medical Health & Wellness. She is board certified in internal medicine and a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. She is a member of the Obesity Medicine Association, Obesity Coalition and the American Medical Association. For more info call 954-389-1800.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Let Your Beauty Shine at Radiance Medspa BY STACEY BOMSER

A

fter 15 years of serving the aesthetic needs of the Weston community, Radiance Medspa has undergone its own rejuvenation. Its brand-new facility was designed specifically to provide patients with a tranquil spa experience while undergoing customized and results-oriented aesthetic procedures. Radiance Medspa Owner Faiza Khalid, MD, shares more about this fresh alternative to cosmetic surgery. Please tell us more about your new facility and what patients can expect. It is an oasis of tranquility and cutting-edge technology offering the most advanced, results-oriented combination of aesthetic procedures uniquely curated for each individual based on their needs and budget, making it possible for them to defer or even avoid surgical procedures. What is your aesthetic philosophy? We believe in respecting the subtle nuances that are specific to each of us and are dedicated to helping patients look ‘refreshed’ and not ‘done.’ Our patients leave the spa feeling like a more youthful, rejuvenated and confident version of themselves. As a physician, why is this the ideal situation for patients? My initial training in Family Medicine allows me to

have a holistic approach towards beauty. I’ve been at the forefront of minimally invasive procedures for over ten years now and was fortunate to be trained by some of the best pioneers in the aesthetic industry and an early adopter of non-surgical cosmetic trends. My practice has evolved beyond traditional use of Botox and fillers where the focus was to ‘chase lines’. My custom signature treatments have helped countless patients avoid or delay surgical procedures. Our most popular treatment is facial sculpting, also known as the liquid facelift, where the strategic placement of fillers in temples, cheeks, jawline and chin areas creates results which were previously possible only with a scalpel. What other services do you offer? Our aesthetic menu offers a wide variety of proce-

dures to all age groups. Our acne facials and peels are very popular among adolescents. Our signature Lighten & Brighten Facial, which includes a facial with a peel or dermabrasion, laser hair removal, laser skin resurfacing, and microneedling may benefit all. We also offer massages, weight loss, microblading and other aesthetic services. What distinguishes Radiance Medspa from other day spas? Our practice combines meticulous one-on-one consultation with the latest diagnostic and aesthetic technologies to produce superior outcomes without sales pressure. In addition, all of the staff at Radiance Medspa are licensed, insured and work under my direct supervision. Anything else you would like to add? Our long history and continued client support are testament to the quality of our business practices. For the past five years, we have been voted Best Medspa in Best of Weston.

Weston Community Comes Together to Support Harvest Drive BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he generosity of the Weston community never ceases to amaze. More than 100 families in need, right here in our city, enjoyed a delicious holiday meal thanks to donations to the Harvest Drive. The program started 28 years ago as a canned food drive at Country Isles Elementary School. Today, Harvest Drive is a county-wide effort which provided complete Thanksgiving meals and a week’s worth of groceries to 2,600 families this past year – serving over 12,000 people throughout Broward County. Since day one, the driving force behind the Harvest Drive has been students. Founder Renee Herman says its mission is to teach children at a

young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others. It’s a lesson not lost on Weston students. “Our students at Cypress Bay High School really stepped up to the plate, as they do each year, organizing a massive Harvest Drive,” states Herman. “Not only did they provide for 110 families in Weston, but the Weston schools donated enough goods to provide food to another 100 families at Fort Lauderdale High and Stranahan High School.” The generosity of the Weston community was also evident in donations to the Harvest Drive Boutique, which allows recipient families to ‘shop’ for gently used clothing, household items, and children’s toys and books. The City of Weston hosted a huge toy drive before the first Moonlight Movie in the Park feature. After hurricane season ended, the City donated its nonperishable food supplies to the Harvest Drive and frozen food items to Feeding South Florida, which provided 217 meals. Herman says in addition to individual donations, local businesses and community service organizations step up each year to support Harvest Drive. She would like to extend a special thank you to the

Rotary Club of Weston, the law offices of Freedland Harwin Valori, CORECares, Kelley Kronenberg Cares, and Castle Management. While the holiday season may be over, Harvest Drive continues to roll along. Herman says it’s important that people remember that hunger never stops. That is why the Harvest Helping Hands box program was created. Businesses and organizations can host team-building events, packing 144 boxes in one afternoon to donate to recipient families. Last year alone, more than 1,000 40-pound boxes of nonperishable food were distributed. To learn more about Harvest Drive and how you can help, visit www.HarvestDriveFlorida.com. hen Renee Herman’s grandson asked her if she was a hero, the founder of Harvest Drive says she was surprised. Although she received two awards for altruism this past year, Herman says she does what she does out of love and necessity. “Although I am certainly grateful, I do not want attention; I want to raise awareness,” explains Herman. “Hunger is very real in our community. These awards make me want to work even harder to make sure that families are fed, and children learn the importance of giving back and helping others.” Harvest Drive started as a simple canned food drive at Country Isles Elementary School almost 30 years ago. Through her efforts and the generosity of the school, 20 families in need were able to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal. Over the years donations have increased, with almost every school in Broward County now participating, and Harvest Drive 2019 provided meals to more than 2,600 families. Although its reach has grown exponentially since inception, Harvest Drive’s mission has not faltered. “When I started Harvest Drive, I wanted to teach children at a young age to give back and to help people who could be in crisis,” shares

Herman. “I organized a small little drive at a school in Weston and it has blossomed. Now, in addition to Harvest Drive’s Thanksgiving donations, we are running two year-round food pantries to serve families in Broward Schools as well as an emergency clothing and home goods closet. Our mission is to give our students and families hope when they are in need.” This commitment has not gone unnoticed. 33 Weston Girl Scouts Earn Prestigious Silver Award BY STACEY BOMSER

P

art of the Girl Scout Law is to “make the world a better place,” and that is exactly what 33 Weston girls did while completing their Silver Award projects. The Silver Award is the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout (grades six to eight) can earn. The girls were presented with Silver Award pins and certificates during Girl Scout of Southeast Florida’s first Silver Award Showcase. In addition to honoring the recipients, the event highlighted the various Silver Award projects. In total, 28 projects were completed, 14 of which were done by Weston Girl Scouts. While each project is unique, they all benefit the community in some way. Girls from Troop 10082 completed two projects at Manatee Bay Elementary, their former school. Hannah E. and Gretta R. designed, prepped and painted an inspirational ocean-themed mural in one of the school’s hallways. Meghan C., Sienna E., Megan P. and Annabella S. created sensory murals in three special needs classrooms using a variety of textured objects along with elements such as letters, numbers, and colors to make them interactive and educational.

Some of the other Girl Scouts chose to help children in need. Through their Smile Makers project, Mackenzie C. and Samantha P. were able to makeover four playrooms at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. The girls also created 100 bedside bags for children who are too ill to visit the playrooms. The Super School in Plantation was the beneficiary of two projects. Sofia A., Camille E., Laura M. and Sophia M. provided

special needs students with a fun, multi-sensory experience to aid in their development. Seraphina H. designed and painted an underwater-themed sensory mural. Hannah W. partnered with the Children’s Home Society of Florida to teach children in the foster care system important life skills through workshops

focused on athletics and the arts. Rachel N. and Emily N. made over 90 fleece blankets for foster children living at Children’s Harbor, Inc. Believing that “Reading Makes a Difference,” Ashlee G. collected and donated more than 300 books along with homemade bookmarks to the Broward Center for Women and Children and the Broward Center for Men. Other Cadettes opted to help animals through their Silver Award projects. Using donated fabric, Sophia J. made over 150 bandanas for pets at the Humane Society of Broward County. Amanda A., Gabriela B., Carolina C., Daria H. and Isabella V. built four educational wooden structures around the bee aviary at the Sawgrass Nature Center and Wildlife Hospital. They also made an educational video to teach children about the importance of bees and other pollinators. To earn the Silver Award, Girl Scouts must design and complete a project with a minimum of 50 logged hours, this includes conducting research and taking action to create positive change. The project must fulfill a need in the community and be sustainable with long-term possibilities.

Weston Siblings Sing for Smiles BY STACEY BOMSER

M

ira and Maya Levinson are no strangers to performing. They have been taking singing lessons and doing musical theater since they were little girls. Now seventh and eighth graders at Falcon Cove Middle School, the sisters are sharing their passion for performing with others through Sing for Smiles. Sing for Smiles was born from their desire to spread their love of music to others who can’t easily attend Broadway shows. The girls bring Broadway with them to retirement homes and assisted living communities, performing a selection of show tunes and popular songs for residents. “One of my favorite songs to sing is ‘The Climb’ by Miley Cyrus,” shares Maya. “It’s a very inspiring song and has always been my go-to song. It seems to be inspiring to others as well. They usually love joining in.” Mira says most of their repertoire is musical theater songs such as ‘Good Morning Baltimore’ from Hairspray, ‘On My Own’ from Les Misérables and “Sing Your Own Song’ from Dear Edwina. Maya adds that ‘Tomorrow’ and ‘Maybe’ from Annie are also

crowd favorites. New to their song list is ‘Hand in Hand’, a song they co-wrote with Latin Grammy Award winning music producer Fredrick “Bam” Scott; it is now available on iTunes and other music download platforms. “’Hand in Hand’ is a song about our relationship as sisters,” shares Mira. “We have such a strong bond that means the world to us, so we wrote a song that we hope will bring a smile to your face.” She adds that the process has been wonderful and fulfilling. “It feels great knowing that you can take something that makes you so happy and turn it into music.” Spreading happiness through music is what these sisters thrive on. Maya says they’ve always wanted to do something that would spread joy in the world and Sing for Smiles is doing just that. “It’s rewarding to see the residents smiling and singing along. They really seem to love it.” What the girls love is knowing how their performance is positively impacting so many people. Through Sing for Smiles, they have gotten to meet

some incredible people. “The first time we went we met a woman from Paris who survived the Holocaust,” notes Maya. “She told us her story and it was so incredible to hear. Everyone there has a story and to listen is just as special.” Mira agrees, saying getting to know people during their performances has been rewarding. “It’s wonderful to learn from people and hear about their life experiences.”

Miss Weston Competes for Miss Florida Teen USA Title BY STACEY BOMSER

B

riana Farnsworth is no stranger to competition. The Cypress Bay High School junior has been playing competitive volleyball for the past ten years, in addition to running track. But, she will face one of her toughest competitions this month when she competes for the Miss Florida Teen USA title. In September, Briana was selected to represent Weston based on her academic standing, community involvement, passion for the pursuit of excellence, and interest in empowering other young women. “This is my first year competing in the Miss Florida Teen USA pageant, but I have been modeling as a print model for a couple of years on and off,” she shares. “Competing in pageants and being on stage is really fun for me because it gives me an opportunity to display the way I carry myself with a confidence that I hope can help those who feel like they lack that aspect of their self-appreciation, and use me as

an example.” With the Miss Florida Teen USA competition approaching, Briana says she is a little nervous but more excited. “I’ve taken care of myself and I have been making sure I can project the best, most confident version of myself that night at the competition.” Briana says this competition is not about beauty, but about empowerment. “The Miss Florida Teen USA pageant is entirely about the way in which us young women display our confidence, public speaking skills, our inner beauty, along with our humility. This is such an amazing experience that I am more than lucky to be a part of, and I can not wait for all to come this upcoming year!” During her reign as Miss Weston Florida Teen USA, Briana says she plans to become more involved in the Weston community. “I’ve lived in Weston almost my whole life, so keeping the community as beautiful as can be will always be important to

me. Not only beautiful on the outside, but also on the inside. I believe that the people of Weston are the key factor in keeping our city where we all want it to be,” she explains. “As for how I want to be a part of it, I really want to be involved with people and helping out not only as a role model but as a peer to everyone to make sure we work together to benefit as much of Weston as possible.” The Miss Florida Teen USA and Miss Florida USA competition takes place January 16-19 at the Coral Springs Center for the Performing Arts. Two winners will advance to either the Miss Teen USA or Miss USA competition. The Miss Florida Teen USA competition is part of the Miss Universe organization. Its mission is to empower women to be self-confident and strive to be their personal best. n For more information go to www.missfloridausa.com.

Everglades Elementary Second Grade Gifted Class Dives Into Learning BY STACEY BOMSER

W

eston is home to hundreds of published authors. But what’s even more impressive is that many of them have only been reading for a few years. Each year, the second grade gifted class at Everglades Elementary School writes and publishes its own book. Gifted teacher Caroline Long says it’s a long-standing tradition that dates back over 15 years. Mrs. Long says Deep Sea Dive with Whales and Dolphins is truly a labor of love, noting that the entire process takes about a month and a half. Each student chooses a whale or dolphin species to study. “They use databases and books to research and find information about the animal’s diet, predators, habitats and more.”

According to Mrs. Long, for many students the most challenging part of this assignment was organizing their writing and sorting through what information was important and what information might be considered a minor detail and not needed in their research paper. Each student was responsible for a page in the book. They had to write a multiparagraph report about their whale or dolphin and illustrate the facing page with realistic images of their animal under the sea. Mrs. Long says the children’s favorite part was when they got to put on a scuba suit and pose for a picture while pretending to swim with their animal. She acknowledges that writing and publishing a book is no easy task, but that extra layer of work just enhances the lesson. “Using a variety of resources and writing is a standard for second

grade, but I also wanted my students to learn how hard work and diligence pays off in a big way.” It certainly did. Mrs. Long says the students gasped when she told them their books had finally arrived. “They cherish these books for weeks. They walk around campus with their books, read them on the bus, and bring them to school every day just to admire their work and their classmates’ work. It’s truly rewarding!” Mrs. Long says she too appreciates the extra effort needed for this assignment because it leaves a lasting impression on her students. “I believe a project like this is more impressive than a traditional assignment because of the hard work entailed over a long period of time and because, in the end, they receive this amazing product that was approved and published.”

Eagle Point Elementary Dual Language Students Bring Life to Dia de los Muertos Celebration BY STACEY BOMSER

T

hird grade dual language stu- Muertos (Day of the Dead). The idea came to Claudia Buitano, dents at Eagle Point Elementary have a taste for knowledge. All who teaches the Spanish portion of four classes recently participated in a the curriculum, after completing a Guacamole Master Chef competition summer course at the Universidad de Salamanca in Spain this past summer. as the culminating activity in a lesson “As part of our sharing and coming up on the Mexican holiday, Dia de los with ‘creative’ lessons for our students, we, as a group of teachers, came up with the Guacamole Master Chef, where students all got the same basic ingredients and then brought in a secret ingredient from home. I was a little worried to do this big activity with eight-year-olds, but it turned out great!” Working in teams, the students had to create an original guacamole recipe. Each team was given avocado, tomato, onion, lemon and salt, and then could add their own secret ingredient. Señora Buitano says they had a variety of interesting secret ingredients such as

pomegranate, garlic, carrots, cinnamon, olive oil, aji (hot chili), and even bacon. “Yup, as some students said it themselves, ‘bacon makes everything better.’” To truly embrace the spirit of the cooking competition, students wore chef hats and aprons. Parent volunteers worked as sous chefs, pre-cutting the ingredients, along with setting up the Dia do los Muertos décor. Principal De Zayas, Assistant Principal Garcia, Head Custodian Mr. Pierre, and the principal’s secretary, Mrs. Iser, served as judges for the Guacamole Master Chef competition. According to Señora Buitano, “Judging had to be based not only on taste, but also texture, creativity, and muy importante, presentation.” There were two winners, coincidentally both from the Spanish language classes. From Señora Buitano’s class, the winner’s secret ingredients were Mexican tajin (chili-lime salt) and Badia seasoning. From Señorita Aguerrevere’s class, the winning secret ingredient was cinnamon.

The Guacamole Master Chef competition was not all fun and games, Señora Buitano assures there was also plenty of learning involved. “This activity was followed up by writing our recipes using sequencing skills and key words, creating a class book of guacamole recipes, and comparing and contrasting non-fiction informative text on Dia de los Muertos to the Disney movie Coco, a fantasy.” During this Dia de los Muertos lesson, dual language students were immersed in Mexican culture. Señora Buitano says the children learned the traditions, as well as importance of family, sharing a ‘sobremesa’ (dessert) after the family meal, recipes and more.

Young Students Enjoy Special Storytime Sessions BY STACEY BOMSER

hat do Weston Mayor Daniel Stermer, New England Patriots wide receiver and Super Bowl LIII MVP Julian Edelman, and America’s Next Top Model Judge Nigel Barker all have in common? All three were among the millions of volunteer readers – celebrities, public figures and community members – who participated in Read for the Record, an annual campaign to highlight the importance of building early literacy and language skills. On Read for the Record Day, elementary schools and preschools across the country joined together to promote literacy by inviting members of the community to read Thank You, Omu! by Oge Mora. It’s the touching story of an elderly woman who makes a pot

of thick red stew. The scent from her delicious stew travels throughout her neighborhood bringing the community together for a taste. The story ends with a lovely feast with all the neighbors contributing to the meal. Mayor Stermer had the privilege of reading to students in Melissa Veronese’s kindergarten class at Manatee Bay Elementary School. “After explaining a little about what a mayor does, the kids felt like they had a rock star coming to the room and were so excited,” shares Mrs. Veronese. “The mayor did an amazing job. He spoke to the kids with respect and was a lot of fun. It really did make the students feel special that someone from the community would take the time to come in and read to them.” WPLG Channel 10 Anchor Nicole Perez was a guest reader at Eagle Point Elementary School. That read-aloud experience left a lasting impression on both Nicole and the students. She tweeted: “The children were smart, funny and oh so attentive!! It truly was an INSURED. Read for the Record brings together children and adult volunteers to share in the joy of reading. To help make the magical moment last, each child was given their own copy of Thank You, Omu! Broward County Public Schools, the Children’s Services Council and early childhood stakeholders provided each pre-kindergarten and kindergarten student with a free copy of the book – a total of 40,000 donated books.

REAL ESTATE

Best Apps for House Hunters BY ROSE SKLAR eing organized when buying a home is critical. I always suggest that buyers keep a good eye on their finances by using an app like Mint where you can control all of your banking and have access to spreadsheets to help with budgeting. A mortgage calculator app is helpful when considering a home purchase. It allows you to plug in the current interest rate, taxes, insurance, and maintenance fees to determine if you can swing the payment. Google maps is always helpful. This allows you to see aerials of the property as well as a street view of the home you are considering. This is nice because you can see what is behind it and nearby, and even see the front of the house and neighboring properties. Commute time to and from work and/or school is something else to consider when purchasing a new home. The Waze app allows you to plug in a route and time of day and it calculates how long the drive should be. Although every buyer is looking for the perfect move-in ready home, the truth is what you are buying is generally an empty house and not that perfectly staged home you toured. Decorating apps can help make furnishing your new home fun and efficient. Houzz is great for perusing ideas to decorate your new home. Pinterest is a convenient place to save your ideas for new home projects in clipboard style.

B

Yelp is another must have app for home buyers. It helps you find any and all types of establishments in the area you are looking. This enables you to see what the lifestyle will be like around your chosen neighborhood to make sure it is compatible with your current, or desired future, lifestyle. Yelp can also help you determine your Walk score (walkability), which is very important to today’s buyer pool. If using real estate apps, do not rely on the site to tell the whole truth. Often times, a site may quote total square footage instead of under air which can be deceiving. It is always better to rely on a person who has access to the correct information – a licensed realtor. Also, do not take the Zillow estimator at value. Many times, these calculations are not fair or correct because they are based on closed sales nearby. They do not take into account whether the home has been updated and, therefore, are not a true comparable. Leave these calculations up to the professionals, not a computer algorithm. Rose Sklar of The Sklar Team has 20 years of South Florida real estate experience along with her partner and husband, Dean. They have a ten-year streak as No. 1 in both volume and units in the City of Weston and were named the No. 1 Coldwell Banker agents in all of Broward County in 2018 ― both by Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate. They nationally outrank 99.5 percent of all NRT Coldwell Banker agents. The Sklar Team at Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate is located at 2690 Weston Rd., Suite 101, Weston, FL 33331. THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation

Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient. During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” For more information about Dr. Donoway and the Pancreatic-IRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com

otarians make a difference in so many ways in our local community. But the reach of Service Above Self extends well beyond our Weston or Broward borders. One of the most impactful programs that Rotarians support is Rotary Peace Fellowships. Some Things to Consider

It is difficult to try and sit down and write an article this month without thinking about the events in Newtown Connecticut that occurred on December 14th. There has been much discussed about gun control and mental health issues and hopefully, by the time this article is released, there will be some progress in these areas. As a family law attorney, one of the issues which somewhat jumped out at me was the fact that the shooters’ parents were divorced. It seems that in many instances when a young adult goes on a rampage like this, he/she comes from a broken home. I certainly am not suggesting that children of divorced households are more likely to be involved in this type of behavior, but I do think that continuing issues between the parents does lead to a greater likelihood that a child can suffer from some emotional problems. Please understand, I am not a psychologist and I am not suggesting that I am qualified to make any diagnosis, but approximately 30 years of practicing family law has allowed me to make several observations. From what I read the shooter in Newtown lived with his mother and had no contact with his father for years. Perhaps that scenario had nothing to do with his mental state, but it certainly did not suggest a loving relationship. It is important that parents going through a divorce always remember how their actions will affect their children. Unfortunately, all too often parents focus on getting even with their spouse and forget that the children are “in the middle” of the conflict. It is important for a child to know that they can rely on both parents for love and support. All too often this is not the case. Children are not to be used as “pawns” in a divorce. The law in Florida is very clear in that a parent who may be behind in the payment of child support cannot be deprived of time with his/ her child(ren). In addition, child support cannot be withheld because a parent is preventing the other parent from exercising his/her time sharing. In spite of the possible financial issues which may be in controversy, time with each parent is essential. It is no longer uncommon for each parent to have equal time with a child. Unfortunately, often parents resist what is best for a child due to possible financial consequences. In Florida, one of the factors which affect child support is the number of overnight visits each parent may have. Instead of focusing on what is best for the child, it becomes an issue of how much will I pay or how much will I receive? Unfortunately, sometimes parents continue this battle long after the Final Judgment has been entered. Post-judgment battles concerning the children can be just as damaging. I strongly urge parents to provide counseling for their children. Even the most “peaceful divorce” has an effect on the children. Just remember, a divorce isn’t only about you! n The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. TEE TO GREEN

Improving Your Time Practicing On The Driving Range BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL t does not matter if you are a pro golfer or a high handicap player, one of the biggest challenges golfers face is taking their so-called practice game to the golf course and performing as well on the course. Many players can hit the ball great on the range and putt well on the practice green, but when they step on the course, they become a different person. These players cannot play with confidence nor can they play to the level they are capable of playing given their present physical skills. What is mysteriously changing the moment you walk off the range or practice green and step onto the course? Nothing – it is your mindset that changes, not physical skills or ability. You still have to hit the ball to a target and putt the ball in the cup. Why is it that you walk off the practice tee, step up onto the first tee, and not stripe it on the course as you did on the range a few minutes ago? Usually it is your perception of the importance of the round.

I

As you tee it up on the first hole, hitting your ball to a target is no longer as simple a task as it was on the range (at least that is what you think). Now that you are on the course, you think “it counts”! You only have one ball and one chance at hitting the ball to the target. Then the pressure mounts (but only because you put the pressure on yourself to perform) and you focus more on the result and trying not to screw up. If this scenario sounds too familiar, you first need to understand how you are blocking your talents from shining on the golf course. Does your mindset change when you get on the course to a mindset of avoidance golf or defensive golf? That’s right, defensive golf! Players can get into mental quicksand on the golf course in ways they are not aware of including the mindset to avoid errors. Therefore, the first step to improving your performance is to understand how you block your ability on the course. The first sign that gets in the way is you try too hard to play well. Most highly motivated players, sometimes perfectionists, have trouble playing well on the course because they try too hard to play well. You cannot play your best golf when you try to too hard to hit a perfect shot, make every putt, or hit every drive long and straight. You might be thinking to yourself “Aren’t I supposed to try hard?” Trying hard does not help you play better golf. The harder you try in golf, the more you tense up and control your swing. ASK THE EXPERT

Early Orthodontic Treatment BY DR. MARTA GROSMAN

T

here is no doubt that the average age of orthodontic patient has lowered through the years. Just open a yearbook from the 50’s and 60’s and you will see many young adults wearing the stereotypical “train tracks” across their teeth. Movies have spoofed the usage of head gears during the high school years, which was common practice in that era. Braces have become smaller, sleeker, more colorful, and worn with pride by many preteens. For those of you who have young children at home, the main question is whether early treatment is right for your child. To best answer this question, it is first important to define some terms. When discussing “early treatment” I personally prefer the term interceptive treatment. It has the connotation of catching something before it becomes a bigger problem. The more common and practical term is “Phased” orthodontic treatment. In this case, treatment done at an earlier age (usually between 6-9 years old) is referred to as Phase I. It is aimed at correction of habits, skeletal discrepancies as well as severe abnormalities in dental eruption. The later treatment, Phase II, is usually done at around 11-13 years old in order to place all permanent teeth in an ideal position. I call it more practical because in most cases the second treatment is needed. The name serves as a reminder to the parents of this fact. Currently, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the first orthodontic evaluation occur by age 7. Does this mean that all children require phased orthodontic treatment? Certainly not. The criteria for starting early treatment should be better or more predictable results. In my opinion, this is certainly the case when the upper jaw is too narrow and must be expanded, when upper front teeth are so protrusive (“buck”) that the incidence of trauma is much more likely (unless corrected), and cases of underbite (when the lower jaw is forward of the upper jaw). These treatments are “no brainers” for two reasons. The body of the younger patient is more amenable to these specific orthopedic (growth) corrections and statistically the preteen is more likely to traumatize a front tooth than at any other time. There are other times that treatment may be done for psychosocial reasons as some children are very conscious of cosmetics. For those parents who are considering early treatment for their children, I recommend listening with an open mind. See if the reasons for starting treatment make sense to you. The rule of thumb would be “if it does not make sense, don’t do it!!!. I find that most parents have a life philosophy which may make them either more or less open to preventative type treatments. As a parent, I find that I know what my child will be able to handle and be up to. Most importantly, if you decide as a family to start, have fun with it. PET CARE

The Overweight Pet BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM

“CALLIE”

Pet OF THE MONTH

I’m Callie! Rescued on the beaches of Aruba. They call us rescues ‘Canucu’- just fancy for Island mutt. I’ve been here since I was 4 months old... I’m a crazy 1.5 year old girl. I love chasing my big fur sister Kona.... my older but smaller fur brother Chaser... squirrels... birds... lizards- just about anything. Just yesterday, daddy turned his head and I bolted out the front door and almost caught that rooster! The whole block had to catch me. I’m really fast! I don’t like new people at first, but leave me alone and I’ll warm up. I love to have a toy or 2 in my mouth and kick a ball around. I’m cute like that. Mommy is my favorite because she spoils us fur kids. We get a new box at the door every few days!

A

recent survey indicated that 40% of America’s pet population is overweight. If you or your veterinarian feel that your pet would benefit from a reduction in body weight, this discussion should help you to understand how to help overweight dogs lose weight. Weight loss for obese cats is more complicated and should not be done without a veterinarian’s supervision. Very simply put, if your pet is overweight it is taking in (eating) more calories than it needs. Set all excuses aside; excessive weight in an otherwise healthy pet is a direct result of consuming unnecessary amounts of food. If your pet is overweight it should be examined for heart, thyroid or other metabolic disorders. A detailed history should be taken with emphasis on frequency of exercise, amount and type of food being provided and other parameters relative to calorie requirements.

The pet food industry has painted the picture for us of the “eager eater.” The impression is that a happy, healthy pet will eat every meal with gusto. Please do not try to entice your pet to eat if it isn’t interested. If you provide a good quality food and a liberal amount of water, your pet will eat when it wants and do better than having to eat when you want. Another common myth maintains that spaying or neutering causes obesity. This is absolutely false. Any pet, neutered or not, will gain weight if it is overfed relative to its energy requirements. Spaying or neutering may slightly slow the pet’s metabolism, as will normal aging, and it will then burn calories off more slowly; therefore, it may require less food. Keep in mind the surgery doesn’t cause the weight gain, eating too much does and you have control over that. The right nutrition will encourage weight loss while helping your pet feel full. Work with your veterinarian to choose the proper food. Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”. Dr. Miguel E. Cordova and his staff are committed to caring for your precious pets. The practice is located at 2701 Executive Park Drive, Suite 1. IT’S THEIR BUSINESS

Slender Fit U Will Help You Lose Weight and Get Healthier BY DEBBY TEICH

I

s focusing on health and well-being is at the top of your list of New Year’s resolutions? After celebrating the holidays with family and friends and indulging in high calorie foods at festive meals and parties, are your clothes feeling a little tighter and the numbers on the scale a little higher? If you have struggled with diets in the past, Slender Fit U can help you lose that holiday bulge and achieve your goal of getting healthier in 2019. It works fast - without exercise and hunger pains! Slender Fit U is helping clients lose the weight, get healthier and even reduce or eliminate medications with a very simple to follow medically supervised weight loss program. Clients typically lose 1⁄2 to 1 pound of actual body fat per day without exercise, diet pills or packaged foods. The Slender Fit U program also helps clients modify their relationship with food and eating habits, resulting in an easily maintained, longterm weight loss. Owner and Program Director Geri Kelleher, often referred to as the “HCG Guru,” truly understands the benefits of the program and works closely with her clients to help them achieve maximize results. She lost 25 pounds in six weeks on Geri Kelleher, Owner the program and has and Program Director kept it off for 11 years. Slender Fit U changed her life forever. Soon after, she started helping others achieve their own weight loss goals. In 2010, she opened a clinic in Davie. A few years later she opened a second clinic in Coral Springs. Geri answered some commonly asked questions about the Slender Fit U program. What do love most about your job? The best part of my job is seeing people change before my eyes and watching them get their confidence back. Over the years, I have helped thousands of people achieve their weight loss goals with this easy program. How does Slender Fit U differ from similar programs? My clients tell me the difference is the way we treat people. We stay involved with all of our clients; they are not just a number. We make sure that every client gets the proper guidance and support throughout the program and achieves their weight loss goals. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest dosage available for weight loss. Do you offer B12 shots? Yes. We also give injectable prescription B12. The Lipotropic Vitamin B12 shots help detoxify the liver and increase metabolism and energy levels. The combination of HCG and B12 helps assure maximum weight loss without feeling hungry all the time or suffering from bad moods. Is the diet easy? To quote one of my clients, “Besides being the most effective diet I have ever gone on, this

was the easiest diet I have ever been on. Almost every morning when I got on the scale, my weight would be down. No long workouts, no agonizing hunger pains. That’s how great this diet is.” How much can clients expect to lose? The typical person will lose ½ to 1 pound of body fat per day without exercise or special foods. How many programs do you offer? Clients can choose a 23-day program or a 46-day program. On the 23-day program, women typically lose 15 pounds and men will typically lose 20 to 25 pounds. On the 46-day program, the numbers average 30 pounds for women and 40-50 pounds for men. Do clients keep the weight off? Ninety percent of Slender Fit U clients keep the weight off. After completing the HCG/B12 program, you go on a threeweek maintenance program, gradually introducing a higher calorie diet and making sure that you do not gain any more than two or three pounds. This will then help lock in a new “normal” weight for your body allowing you to more easily maintain the weight loss as you return to normal eating. The diet helps “rebalance” the metabolism. In addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat, you easily modify your relationship with food and eating to maintain long- term weight loss. What makes the diet so effective? Unlike other “diets,” this program reshapes and re-sculpts the body by releasing abnormal fat deposits. Every pound you lose is a pound of FAT, which is very different from losing a pound of weight. You are not losing muscle mass, or water. You also lose multiple inches and dress sizes and your shape changes. Are clients medically supervised? Yes. Before starting the diet, you will get a physical examfrom one of the medical doctors associated with the program. This is included in the cost of the program and involves no co-pay on your part. David lost 53 pounds in six weeks. BEFORE

AFTER

"I feel incredible. I haven't weighed this little in at least a decade. The diet was easy to follow and I lost over 50 pounds. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who is serious about losing a lot of weight." – David

Maria lost 27 pounds in six weeks. BEFORE

AFTER

"I'm very happy with my results. It is also a very friendly environment. I will recommend Slender Fit U to my friends and family." – Maria

Does the diet involve exercise? Exercise is not required and does not improve your end result. It is a scientific program and it is the combination of the HCG and the low-calorie diet that produces the weight/fat loss. However, exercise is allowed. How does the weight loss program work? It is a scientifically researched program that combines HCG and a low-calorie diet during the 23 or 46-day program. HCG, which is short for Human Chronic Gonadotropin, is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists normally in men and women. The female body uses this substance during pregnancy where high levels are produced to almost completely control the metabolic function. In non-pregnant individuals, research suggests HCG similarly increases the metabolism. Does the HCG have side effects? Because HCG is a natural substance, the program is very safe with no side effects. What foods are on the diet? There are no packaged meals. You are eating real food from the grocery store that includes proteins, fruit and vegetables. This makes for an easy transition onto stabilization and then back to regular life. Are clients hungry on the diet? Most people experience no hunger on the Slender Fit U program. They are getting anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 calories from their stored fat, depending on how much fat they have. They even find very tiny servings to be completely satisfying. Slender Fit U clients usually feel as though they are stuffing themselves in order to reach that 800-calorie limit! SEE AD PAGE 4
